Much as I hate the Toxics in WvW, they are easy enough to avoid (at least in the BLs .. don’t know about EB), and I would guess they are primarily there to provide those WvWers who refuse to any PvE a means to complete their Daily in WvW

I can sympathise with the OP – seeing the hard work he put into getting to his current level (48?) drop suddenly to 30 must be hard to stomach (I’m not even remotely interested in FOTM being a WvWer .. but imagine the outcry if our ranks were suddenly reset to some low level? Ouch!).

The consolation, I guess, is that you now have a LeaderBoard that you can aspire to get to the top of.

Ah .. but do this while you do your shopping in the supermarket (pushing a trolley around the aisles), and spot all the WvWers you didn’t know lived close to you as they actually do stack up with you.

Devon has said there won’t be a second season this side of 2013.. in fact he didn’t specifically say there would be a second season.

And he’s also said that we will be returning to the old ranking system for determining match-ups.

My take is, if there is a second season of the league, that they will determine the leagues based on the current rankings at the time just as they did for season 1.

So, technically, no promotions or relegations..

The OP’s post explains why Desolation (or Tankolation, hell – I’m going to embrace it – I can, after all, occasionally be a Necro Tank), is doing so well in the League. I’ve always felt that if our PvE community discovered WvW, we’d be unstoppable, and after months of poor results and crippling Guild loss, the start of Season 1 breathed new life into Deso’s efforts.

Like you, Danikat, I started out my GW2 experienced focused on PvE. I discovered WvW purely by trying to complete my monthly, and came across a great commander and his guild that helped me understand the mechanics of the game. I haven’t looked back since.

Welcome, and Thanks! The first few weeks were painful, but I think the League has been fantastic! May you and all the other ‘casual’ WvWers recently converted continue to enjoy the fun to be had.

This isn’t as straightforward as all that. Whilst all BLs are effectively separate instances, and so each BL can have a set of ‘colours’, when one commander decides to border hop, his colour may already be chosen in the BL he choses to wp to.

As well, when tagging up, the commander will need to choose a colour. Once chosen, it becomes ‘locked out’, otherwise the old problem is again introduced. So what happens when all the colours are chosen? Does that mean no one else can tag up?

Devon has said that they are looking at the way Commander works (can’t remember where the thread is) and I can understand why they need to look carefully at how they do it.

I (sadly) have to agree that NA coverage would win it in a server vs server based matchup. Viz would valiantly do their best but I don’t think they’d be able to cut the mustard (as our cross-atlantic cousins would say .. and Oi! Back taxes please .. anytime soon?).

Now .. Tier1 NA vs Tier 1 EU (tier 1 servers for a continent would be allies, so SOR, BG etc .. would be one side and Viz, PS etc be the opposing side), on the other hand .. EU would smear the NA servers across the maps .. :-)

I feel your pain, Fella! Seen it happen many a time. And yes, I did re-spawn as soon as I could in those circumstances. Part of the game, and all that.

But the kick I get (Necro here .. spread the conditions, switch to Plague and roll into the crowd), when I re-spawn and then spam my area loot button as I hasten (note: I didn’t say speed back) back into the fray!

A thread I’d started in the WvWvW Discussion forum got deleted for being insulting to a section of the GW2 community.

I guess that rule doesn’t count when it’s Desolation that gets insulted ..

Big shout out to the GuM thief who ran us ragged in our Garri keeping it contested from inside. Eventually got ganked by about 10 Desonians who finally caught up with him.

You may as well ask that Map Completion is taken out of WvW all together (just as it is in sPvP). I think the whole point of including WvW maps in the Map Completion cycle was Anet’s way of telling/forcing people to give WvW a try.

Here’s the thing: if you enter into the spirit of WvW properly, Map completion, the WvW dailies (and monthlies) and all the WvW related achievements will just happen .. fairly quickly as well.

I’m primarily WvW player (and yes.. I do PvE), simply because I came to realise that to complete the maps, I had to make that mental switch .. and once I did that, I discovered I loved WvW a whole lot more than PvE. The variety that you get in WvW simply blows PvE out of the water. I understand that for others that may not be the case but I suspect many might discover the fun to be had if they make that mental switch that allows them to become better attuned (getting PVT gear, and the right mental attitude).

Sorry if any of the above sounds condescending .. no intention to do that .. just the best advise I could give. Genuinely hope you get there.

Desolation is having fun … we have popcorn .. we have beer .. occasionally we dance .. it’s cool for us.

All the smart @rse responders are very neatly managing to not comprehend that the OP is not complaining about the kiddy griefers in the JP’s, he even says good luck to them if thats what they want to do. The complaint is that the JP’s amount to 4 out of the 19 available thingys to do if u want the golden yak or whatever the crap reward is for doing the WvW season achievement.

Actually, it was a dig at Deso .. though he doesn’t say so. He quite happily completed the JP in AM, he waved to opponents from AM and they happily skipped together to their achievement. Then, dramatically, on Deso BL he gets ganked by 2 thieves.

@Vic .. I’m not sorry you got ganked but can appreciate that it was a pain .. I hate JPs too (though I do find that a bottle of beer or 3, and a bunch of Guildies makes for a much better though less co-ordinated, experience) and do them only if I absolutely have too, or it is a ‘fun’ guild event (see my caveats).

If you’d had come to the JP when CS were there, we’d have left you alone to get on with it .. not everyone is out to get the JP achievers.

It’s not so much the hate that bugs me .. it’s the total disregard (bordering on disrespect) that the haters are showing towards their own server-mates, who go onto the BLs to fight us so well. The hate being exhibited is so weak and a clear attempt at excusing the losing attitude of these people.

If I were on these servers, I’d be proud of the gameplay my team-mates have shown Desolation over the past week and a half, and not have poor excuses ready to throw around. Gandara (last week) and both Fort Ranick and Miller’s Sound have played some really good WvW, and have made, for me at least, a great game better.

As for Desolation .. we have nothing to be ashamed of here. Fact: Deso is a PvE server. At one time, it had a lot of disciplined and dedicated WvW guilds. However (FACT), our WvW Guild community was decimated! However, as a community (and thanks to some very special people) we survived! And we’re kitten ed proud of it!

Thanks to ANET, our PvE community has flocked to WvW for the achievements. And it has brought both benefits and problems. Everyone knows about the problems: queues, inexperienced WvW, inappropriate gear, etc. Here’s the thing .. our WvW guilds have taken a problem and have managed to make it an asset.

We will lose the PvE community once they get their achievements and the Living Story moves on. But if enough stay on becuase they enjoyed the friendly and mostly respectful Deso community, then yes, we’ll be back in touch for the Gold League .. and we will deserve to be there.

And, by God, they will fear us!

Couldn’t agree more! It is this kind of unexpected anomaly that makes for a great moment for any single class. Being completely OP in a stupid and funny way should be a must on a regular basis.. a couple of hours of mayhem every once in a while to make the community smile (and troll those knee-jerk kittenwits who over-react by screaming “Exploit” whenever something like this – an obvious bug that will get fixed quicker than you can shout “wait until after I get home from work!!” – turns up after a patch)!

Desolation lost 6 guilds in the space of a few weeks – they’ve been listed in this thread already. On top of that, Desolation’s TS server got hit by a very serious DDOS attack that killed our comms, followed shortly after by an attack on our forum. As a result, we were left practically blind.

We’ve since got our TS and Forum back, and are re-building our coverage (Ins’s Pain Train guild). Here’s the thing: we have a huge PvE population, a well-organised one which, if it turned it’s attention to WvW, would make Desolation overnight a Gold League top ranked contender. But it isn’t going to happen – not while Anet keep churning out Living Story content that satisfies the PvE community we have.

And we can’t attract new guilds to our server – very high population. No-one wants to pay 1800 gems to move there for WvW and we can’t afford to pay for them.

So – contrary to the belief that we deliberately dropped to Silver League (yes – we wanted to – wouldn’t anyone?) – we had little choice. In any match-up, we were going to lose points. Even against Viz and SFR.

I’d like to add my admiration for BB guild OdS. Annoying doesn’t even come close to describing the frustration I felt trying to stop your pairs from taking our camps. Crazy efficient!

I spent most of this evening having some very good fights against both Underworld and Gandarra (who, incidentally, are my favourite opponents ever .. still laugh at the audacity of Yarr). CS were running with 15 most of the evening.. got wiped a few times, wiped both server groups a few times. I thought it was great fun .. fair fights, many out in the open. Both servers played honourably and I didn’t feel as if we gave anything other than a good fight.

If you are going to spout vitriol against my server, then I’d appreciate an explanation.

If u are looking for a strong NA-presence server (translates pretty much to night coverage in EU), u will have to look to the servers which are already stacked. SFR and PS as international servers, Vizunah as French national server and RS as German national server. Those are the 4 servers that have stacked themselves in order to compete in T1. I’d dare say there’s no other server that can field as good night presence as those servers.

Nah! Dahir is Tequila the Sunless. The supreme Desolation PvE Krewe who have been battering him finally became too much for him. He has joined us (on the basis that if you can’t beat them, join them), renamed himself Dahir and now fights for Desolation in WvW.

A WvW commander can learn from mistakes but he has to have some BASIC knowledge and know-hows about the battleground and strategic moves. Hence why having a requirement higher than just 100g is crucial to a good commanding team in WvW.

Which precisely why Anet cannot allow someone to get a tag on the relatively arbitrary notion that someone who has X amount of kills or captures or whatever is going to make a good commander. In the current meta, it doesn’t take long for someone who is good at surviving in a zerg and following his commander to rack up the numbers. Doesn’t necessarily make him a good tactician.

I agree with you that the basis of the current criterion – having 100 gold to spend on the dorito – is just as arbitrary, but at least it shows a commitment to to the ‘cause’.

At the end of the day, the true judge of whether someone is a good commander or not comes down to the players that are willing to follow the tag into battle. It doesn’t take long for dedicated and skilled WvW players to judge a commander’s worth.

As for Candy – he’s not ‘left’ as such. His Real Life commitments make it very difficult for him to find the time to play, and rather than make himself miserable by only coming on occasionally, he decided to take a break until his work commitments change again (hopefully in the new year). In the meanwhile, CS keeps his traditions going!

One of those weird moments in GW2 on Desolation BL this evening. I had just flipped Bauer’s Estate and was looking around for my next target when an Abbadon Ranger came up next to me. He didn’t threaten me so I thought “WTH – let’s enjoy the view!” We stood there for about 5 minutes, then both jumped down and went our own way.

A little later on, went to flip another capture point, and he was fighting 1v1 against a Desonian warrior I think. He lost. Sad about that – I had personal reasons for thinking the Desonian he was up against was a kitten .

The biggest culprit though, has to be desolation. Your not hiding it well folks! Since the end of august when you gave Vizunah Square a close (25k) run for 2nd place but missing out. You guys have tanked the last 3 weeks hard, losing over 119 rating not including the (close to 50 more) rating your losing this week. Mass exodus – I think not, cunning ploy to settle into the silver league and win your shiny loots me thinks! Going from a strong 3rd to 10th in about 4 weeks is impressive.

Let’s set the record straight. Desolation is a very high population PvE server .. has been for a long time. The fact that we came close to catching Vizunah was down to the fact that our WvW guilds happen to have an intense commitment to WvW, and after weeks and weeks of facing off the Goliath of the EU servers, had developed tactics that were working.

However, the constant barrage of super-servers that we had to face week on week took its toll. The combination of constant Living Story new content (pulling away our PvE population from EBG) and our poor coverage issues meant that all our dedicated guilds were feeling the strain.

Only last week we lost our premium coverage Guild, DVG. That hurt us as a server. Last week’s match-up against SFR simply showed us what we were going to be dealing with in the Gold league.

But let’s get this straight. No-one on Deso is going to be giving up. We have simply accepted that we need to re-consolidate. And if we are going to survive as a WvW server, the only way to consolidate is by enjoying the game. Frankly, trying to beat others on PPT was killing us. So we stopped trying. Doesn’t mean that we are not going to play competitively – all our guilds – every single one of them – will give our opponents a very hard time whenever there are close to equal numbers. And our opponents know this.

And as a final note – if our PvE players suddenly decided to give WvW a serious shot .. there isn’t a server out there that can come close to beating us. Don’t believe me? Just as Tequila the Sunless! :-)

I think it is important to distinguish being playing badly (no-one said that Desolation are aiming to play ‘badly’), and making the conscious decision to ignore the Game Meta (working for PPT) and playing well but not for points.

Not one of the Desolation WvW Guilds will play badly. Every single Desolation WvWer is intensely proud of the skill and professionalism they bring to the game. To accuse any of us of deliberately throwing in the game is unthinkably bad form.

What the Desolation Guilds have all agreed, is that our current coverage is such that we would find any attempt to play for the win in the Gold League a frustrating and possible unavoidable game-killer for us.

Desolation has to go through a phase of re-consolidation – and in the mind of many of us, to do this we would be better off in the Silver League. As such, a collective decision was taken to concentrate on fun and not on PPT.

Desolation is in a weird place at the moment – a high population server ranked 3rd. You’d think that we have access to a high WvW population which consequently contributes to the skill lag.

But that isn’t the case. Last week we were placed 6th. Our current predicted rank is set to be 6th again next week, even though we are comfortably winning our match-up. The last 2 weeks, we were stomped by Vizunah and then Seafarers – both of which can roll over us with much higher WvW populations – Deso is primarily a PvE server, and hence only do well during prime-time. Even then, we can’t compete against the T1 servers.

What keeps us going is a remarkable determination to keep going, developing tactics to counter the big guns.

As far as skill lag is concerned – I’m beginning to wonder about that. I upgraded my PC recently – to counter my FPS issue (which I know was down to the CPU and GPU that I had). That improved tremendously – but I also noticed that skill lag wasn’t so bad as well.

I put that down to benefiting from increase in FPS and perception – and maybe finally benefiting from any changes Anet made to reduce Skill Lag.

However, the other day I was involved in the defense of Garrison on Deso BL where both opposition servers were sending in blobs. It was a huge fight – and skill lag was not a problem for me. But suddenly – it did become a problem. Total lock up – nothing worked except skill 1 – everything else .. meh! I could move – no issue, I could access menus – no issue. Definitely skill lag. Lasted for about 5 maybe 10 minutes. Then it disappeared. Everything was back to normal .. blobs were the same size, no indication of what went wrong.

Interestingly – and maybe had nothing to do with it – one of the opponents started setting off fireworks ..

Indeed, a lot of people are probably already doing what you just mentioned.

Wouldn’t it be funny if people did that only to find that after the patch, those 1000s of crafted magic find armour/weapons suddenly become account bound?

I’m generally not in favour of PvE in WvW but the discrepancy of loot between the two does make it difficult to argue against some form of solution that involves PvE.

I outlined a possible way forward of having LS content in WvW in a different thread hereabouts though I can’t see it happening. what follows is a specific example:

Aetherblade pirates attack a keep in the borderlands. If the incumbent server team stops the attack, they get PvE level loot and an achievement that counts towards the living story (or at least, those who take part do). If they fail, that keep becomes a neutral keep controlled by the LS bladers – and any ppt is taken out of the match-up. This makes it a good target for any of the 3 servers. It is also an open invitation for a 4 way fight. Winning server gets the keep and the big prize – everyone taking part gets a LS achievement + the loot that will fall.

If Anet introduce LS into WvW, it has to be relevant to WvW – not PvE.

Only a WvW player accidentally finds himself following a zerg in PvE Living Story, realises that he’s in PvE then wonders how the kitten the Pugs follow the tag so well here but can’t do it in WvW!

The Twisted Watchwork Portal Device is a single-use consumable that teleports the user to a random place in Tyria. The destination may be very rewarding, very dangerous, both, or anywhere in between.

Was in an LA Overflow when I decided to use the one that dropped for me.
And nothing happened. I went nowhere..
So – what’s the chances of being teleported to the exact same spot I’m standing in? No idea but I suspect that the device did nothing.

So – anyone actually seen this device work?

Co-incidentally, I received a mail from GW2 support with 3 sips of karma (gave me 1350 karma in total) for some reason I couldn’t quite fathom. Didn’t specifically say for the disappointment of my portal device failing (come on – Asuran surely!). If that was my consolation prize, sorry Anet – not very rewarding! :-)

I’m confused reading this thread. I could’ve sworn this started out as a presentation of idea to fix various issues in WvW – primarily skill lag. It seems to have evolved into anti-zerg thread [which is just as confusing – what’s a zerg in comparison to a blob? Is a guild raid of 20 a zerg? When does a zerg become a blob? And which is worse?]

The only safe possibly solution to zerg size is LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF PLAYERS FROM EACH SERVER PER MAP. This may require more WvW maps to be made, it may also force players to lower pop servers who get tired out waiting in que, thus balancing WvW more.

As someone else in this thread said – the only real solution to skill lag is fixing the problem at source: and that’s a case of making the server code efficient at handling a lot of data plus optimising the hardware it is running on. Limiting numbers will only lead to other problems and in itself does not FIX the problem.

Cause it would just kitten off both WvWers (they want PvP, not some random mobs and PvE crap running trought the playfield) and PvErs (remember Kite/cache hidden in JP? “QQ i must go in WvW but ppl kill me there”).

This – so true. However, it could work if the LS element actually integrated into WvW properly.

For example: if the Aetherblade wotsits were to invade and take a keep, such that you would have to battle them for possession of the keep (using the PvE world’s upscaling to determine numbers of AP/waves etc), where the rewards would be appropriately lucrative (as per PVE). Even count towrds the achievements for that particular LS.

It could be fun, for example, for the LS baddies to oust whoever controls the SM in EB then have all 3 servers ‘collaborate’ to re-take then battle each other afterwards for the Castle.

It would help WvW since this would attract Pugs in for the loot who might stay and enjoy real WvW. You’ll still get the whingers (“My OCD demands I get all achievements and I think it is undfair that someone is killing me while I do it!” brigade) but kitten’em, I say!

I don’t understand this push to get ability points account bound! I Have 2 main WvW characters – Ranger (which I primarily use as a roamer, camp flipper, disruptor, repairer etc and mostly morning play), and a Necro (traited to run in Guild Raids/Zergs). I’m happy enough with the ability points each character gets and it gives me a sense of purpose for that character to level it up.

What I really want is the ability to reset and re-allocate the points as my character develops! Especially as new abilities come online. I don’t understand why Anet would have made it possible for my characters to go to a skill trainer and for a small fee allow me to re-vamp my build but won’t give me the same opportunity to experiment with my WvW abilities!
