I’m going to pass, the “new armour skins” are just the island things from november, the regular drops are found everywhere now, and the only new things added are the minis and weapon ticket, neither of which are interesting enough motivation for me to get the chest rather than hope some drop

when evaluating if I should get something or not, locking it behind RNG is a significant turn off, either it needs a guarantee that I’m getting SOMETHING unique from it, or I’m not buying it, I could easily spend £12 for 10 boxes and get nothing but karka shells and passiflora, both of which I can just kill mobs to get

The flower backpack essentially tells you the entire plot in its item description without any spoiler warning.

Why Anet? Why?

The entire plot? It just tells you what happened already, which you can sort of derive most of yourself. It doesn’t tell you the why. What were his motivations, did he really discover Southsun by chance? What is his overall plan? And what the hell is Sclerite, it looks nothing like the Karka.

Plenty to still be revealed IMO, even with the minor spoiling that did happen.

actually, as far as we knew, canach and noll just took flora samples, we didn’t know they also planted insanity flowers.

it’s the material that crab and lobster shells are made of (sclera are also the whites of your eyes, hence the eyeball theme)

now why the heck a karka shell has tentacles I have no clue ;P

It seemed reminiscent of wind riders to me, or Jade maw. Does this mean mursaat?

Interesting!
But the eyes and tentacles still aren’t really like the Karka.

this is something a guildie mentioned as a joke about the tentacles, but it’s technically possible and kinda gross:

so far, all the adult karka we’ve seen have been female, they are all capable of laying eggs after all, and the jokes from november likening them to “a va**na dentata with legs”.

if that’s true, we haven’t seen the male ones yet… and if they are similar to the female ones then those back pieces are going to quickly become the grossest things on tyria

is open world agony coming?

Omg you make us do that jp again…

I hate you Anet.

All my characters are pretty large, so after a few tries I got sick of jumping and skipped it. I’m at 24/25 achievements and there are still spares, so… I doubt you need the puzzle.

If they didn’t fix it, you can get to the end of the JP from behind and skip the “difficult” part in the beginning completely without the help of a mesmer.

else decent evening entertainment with 2 well designed backs, hope the exotic tentacle one gets gfx update so the tentacles actual move.

you mean apart from the 200% MF buff hat works only in southsun?

or the similar gold find buff that also only works in southsun and can net you up to 5 silver per enemy if the random number gods favor you?

or the relatively high density of events?

or the fact that karka have a pretty high blood droprate? (I actually managed to get 4S 86c and a powerful blood off ONE young karka and I don’t need to be a warrior or mesmer, I got that as an engineer, I LOVE SOUTHSUN! DEATH TO CoF, ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOKARKA)

Molten Facility - Can we try again?

in Flame and Frost

Calcifire.1864

Seasonal has nothing to do with it. Temporary content is temporary.

The reasons behind them are different though.

Mad King Thorn Day and the time around it is when Thorn’s little corner of The Underworld is at it’s closest to Tyria, he used that as an oppurtunity to try and escape via the fountain, and his escape attempts caused portals to open up aound Kryta. Since we sealed him back up again (or specifically, we kept him from escaping long enough for his curse to kick in and render him relatively harmless), there is no way out of The Underworld without severely limiting his power.

The Infinirarium was a Wintersday only thing, since it was also a holiday in Tyria, it’s a bit like a travelling carnival.

The Lost Shores event was a one time thing because there was only one Ancient Karka, which we killed despite it’s ability to turn invisible and murder people horribly.

The Super Adventure Box went offline temporarily for updates (personally I think that’s BS tough, ANet don’t shut the servers down to update after all, they just set up a new updated one, boot everyone off the old one, and force them to relog into the new one, and then when there is nobody left on the old server, they take the old server down)

The Molten Weapon Facility is a bit of a unique case, it’s not limited by time like Thorn’s escape or Tixx’s Infinirarium was, and it’s not a unique thing like the Ancient Karka was (it was specifically mentioned as such to justify the multiple entrances), so as long as Flame Legion and Dredge are willing to work with each other, it’s not completely outside the realms of possibility to return.

Here is a list of things that you need to do before Sunday (in order of release)

1: Acts of kindness (reviving/assisting Refugees, lighting bonfires, repairing signs, gathering mementos)

2: Kill a bunch of Molten Invaders (they are any enemies related to the story, not specifically from events)

3: Find the 6 Dirt/Snow Covered Objects in Diessa Plateau/Wayfarer Foothills and return them to the Refugees in Lion’s Arch (3 in each zone)

4: Visit the Black Citadel and get a translator from the Whispers Agent

5: Find the 12 secret messages around Diessa Plateau/Wayfarer Foothills, the locations are in a letter the Whispers Agent gives you (6 per zone)

6: Visit the Command Core in the Black Citadel and see Rox and Rytlock’s conversation

7: Complete The Hatchery instance in Diessa Plateau

8: Visit the Blood Tribune Quarters and watch Braham and Rytlock’s conversation

9: Visit Hoelbrak and watch Braham’s conversation with Knut

10: Complete the Cragstead instance in Wayfarer Foothills

11: Complete the Molten Foundry dungeon in Diessa Plateau/Wayfarer Foothills

12: Visit the Black Citadel’s jail and watch Rox and Rytlock’s conversation

13: Visit Hoelbrak and watch Braham’s conversation with Knut

14: Visit the Black Citadel/Hoelbrak/Lion’s Arch on the 12th and sit at the celebration bonfire to complete the Living Story

That’s everything :P
(the Molten Invaders are any enemy related to the Molten Alliance, killing enemies in The Hatchery, Cragstead, or the Molten Foundry counts towards the achievement)

I completed 7 but can’t seem to get 8 to activate at all. Am I just bugged or are the characters gone now?

they all vanished yesterday I’m afraid, the only part of the list that is valid now is the victory bonfire :<

Generally (though not always) zones access others that are the next step in leveling. Getting to SSC from Caledon or even Sparkfly would be pointless really. What lvl 14 is going to want to get there? And what 80 is going to run to SSC from the Grove thru Caledon? I understand Calcifire’s want to be able to see it from afar (Morgan’s Spiral). It shouldn’t exist as an other-dimensional-island.

It was added after launch and isn’t complete yet. As such, and given this new SSC-centered storyline, there might be some great things coming. Perhaps an expansion to the zone or a new one.

Wayfarer foothills opens to frostgorge sound, sparkfly opens to SoD, caledon opens to the high level end of kessex hills, plains of ashford opens to both blazeridge steppes AND iron marches (in fact, it doesn’t even directly connect to a lv 15 zone, you need to go via the citadel), divinity’s reach has a portal to fields of ruin, lion’s arch links to southsun (let’s not forget, LA is in the middle of the 30-50 zones), technically, lornar’s pass, gendarran fields, and bloodtide coast have links to the SoD, all krytan zones except diviniyt’s reach had doors to the mad kings realm in some way, every city had access to the infinirarium, and all cities can access LA (like I said, it’s in the middle of the 30-50 zones)

there are plenty of cases where uneven leveled zones connect ;P

it may seem useless, however as it is, the world already feels “unnatural” with all of those perpendicular mountain ranges in convenient squares, and as someone who came from WoW, it was VERY jarring to have such narrow zone entrances when I was used to semi-seamless transitions, having southsun connect just gives a small feeling that the world IS connected, and not just a series of maps

Incidentally, I WOULD use a path to SSC via caledon, I prefer to stay away from LA because it causes colossal slowdowns and my internet and computer are bad enough that waypointing from one end of lions arch to another is often SLOWER than running, because of the load times due to the sheer number of models loading at once (I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been stuck for 5 minutes as a levitating pair of pistols and a burning book after WPing to a crowded area)

Just want to throw in something. The dredge you interrogate say

Yeah, the flaming cow pies and their fast-talking friend from the city. Never again! Lying silver-tongued, snake-nosed trickster! Never again.

Ottilia is not from a city. She’s from Cragstead and it was never mentioned that she left it before she got captured by the dredge or that she came there just recently.

if she’s as tricky as the dredge say, how can we trust that she HAS come from the city? for all we know, she was lying to them.

I’ve said it before, but I’d caution against taking the term ‘snake’ too literally. It’s a pretty common pejorative for people who can talk other people into doing things that aren’t actually in their interest.

the dredge actually mentions that she’s snake-nosed, so it probably is literal

a few points I’d like to make:

1: it CANNOT be anyone from the 1-60 sections of the personal story, if we are to recognize them, we must ALL have been able to potentially see them.

2: it isn’t likely to be anyone in destiny’s edge, because really? even ANet aren’t going to go THAT cliche.

3: it is more likely than not that whoever they are, theyre an asura or slvari, hey are the only two races with face options that can be described as “snakelike”

4: it needs to be someone charismatic, either someone used to talking people into stuff or a mesmer.

5: we can’t take anything the dredge says about the person, other than their appearence, literally, they could easily have been lying about the city.

the only people I can think of who fit all of the possibilities is Faolain or an asura/sylvari representitive of the consortium (or maybe just that human lady looking smug and shifty on the SoS art?).

I’m personally betting on the consortium. why?

this is the order of events that have happened recently:

1: the consortium discover southsun and kitten off the karka

2: we stop the enraged karka and the consortium claim southsun

3: a “fast talking person” from the city approaches the flame legion and convinces them to join the dredge

4: the molten alliance attack diessa and wayfarer, causing a bunch of refugees to lose their homes

5: the consortium “out of the goodness of their hearts” build “free” housing on southsun

6: thanks to the evils of the EULA, the refugees are now the consortium’s slaves

7: the animals on the island have gone berserk, again, making us return and slaughter more karka

what valuable commodity can be found on southsun that they’d be willing to make people slaves for?
orichalcum and mythril

where else can orichalcum and mythril be found?
on orr, deep underground, and in frostgorge sound

how many of those are feasible to dig up?
frostgorge, and who lives in frostgorge? the dredge (and the FL just one zone over)

where is the worlds highest concentration of orichalcum?
right in the middle of the karka hive (or it was, until january, just before the frost and flame stuff started)

who has all of this benefitted the most? The consortium.

All of this has been a ploy to clear out southsun and get workers for mining unobtanium… I mean orichalcum

/wildmassguessing

Maybe I’m taking it too literally, but the comment made by the prisoner talks about a “snake-nosed” person. When I hear that, the first thing that pops into my mind is Sylvari, since one of the faces we can choose is very snake-like. And since it is a she…

Faolain!

Can’t be. We killed Faolin in the story mode of TA. She’s dead.

You might wanna replay that again and look closer ;-) Just sayin….

Aw man I really don’t like her. Was hoping she died.

You need to replay that dungeon.

Faolain escaped. Though it may be possible to kill her with enough firepower, as she’s not invulnerable (or at least wasn’t long ago) during the final bit where she taunts before leaving.

She and Caudecus are the only story-mode dungeon nemesis who live by the end of the plot thus far.

she can be killed, I managed to do it in story mode, whilst also bugging out caderyn making non-boss nightmare court friendly to me :P (god that was a bizzare experience, I was the only sylvari in my group, so we thought it was something that happened to sylvari in the story, it was just because caderyn morphed me at the exact moment he died, making me transform, then instantly untransform because the fight ended, and since the fight was over, the thorn dogs didn’t spawn to fix stuff :P)

By the way, where is this ‘epic group event’ you’re refering to? I’ve seen epic group events in several places in GW2, including the Maw and the Fire Elemental.

This is part of the problem with the demands for stuff that isn’t a 5 man dungeon. The Maw is a joke. Jormag is a joke. The Shatter is a joke. All of the soloable mission are a joke. Anet has shown a distinct lack of ability to make epic, challenging and tactical experiences other than in 5 man dungeons. If you have an idea for something epic that they haven’t already tried and failed at, that would be great.

CHAMPION. RISEN. WRAITHS.

Trying to get a PUG to kill one of them is like trying to herd kittens!

I tried to tell people to run when it flies and to not try rezzing dead people in range, but the lemmings just keep running into his leechy embrace, and then fully haling him.

Just make gadgets signets in all but name. Also the stuff about signets being magical is just plain wrong. How do you explain signets on a warrior? However you explain it, you could make up a similar excuse for engineers.

I have to agree, in lore, signets are just items with a magical effect on people who hold them, it’s mentioned in some of the lore about orr and it’s use of magic before the cataclysm. the only reason I guess engi’s don’t use them is that they refuse to do so, not because they can’t (remember, the engineer is based on the charr after all, and look at their stance towards magic)

to find the correct term? What exactly is magitech?

technology that is powered by magic rather than engineering (eg, a flamethrower powered by a fire elemental rather than fuel), that’s the point, it’s magical tech :P

(magepunk is modern technology where things are done magically for no good reason, much like steam is used in steampunk, in magitech, the difference is that it is used for a GOOD reason, eg, “fuel is rare but we have lots of elementals wandering about” or it fills a niche that couldn’t be done with technology in that setting, and cyberpunk is modern technology where computers are added for even the simplest things, like on a table)

It gets grating when people keep staying “steampunk” over and over and over to describe something it doesn’t apply to. Nothing is steampowered and there is no Victorian aesthetic to the game. There is precisely zero “steampunk” in GW2.

That said, generic dragons + elves fantasy has been done to death. Yeah, its popular but its tired and developers shouldn’t be afraid to step up and take things in a different direction.. I’m glad GW2 is franchise that isn’t afraid to go against the regurgitated tropes and cliches of magic/Tolkein/elves/bland.

Agreed, the only steampunk-esque things in GW are the Charr things and possibly some of the dredge stuff (and both of those are more industrial than steampunk), Asura stuff is Magitech or Magepunk

too much "changing", not enough "evolving"

in Living World

Posted by: Calcifire.1864

Calcifire.1864

I just posted this on reddit about the living world, and how it’s “living” in the same way a person in stasis is technically “living”

the problem is, part of the point of GW2 was that the world is supposed to evolve and permanent changes get made, so far, the only permanent content is the fractals portal and the currently abandoned southsun.

it’s all well and good for it being temporary, but when everything returns to status quo, the world just starts to feel as static as any other MMO, the F&F storyline is going to be removed and diessa and wayfarer will be exactly the same as they were after release, that’s not a living world, that’s just an extended dynamic event.

a true “living world” would be “oh no, kralkatorrik’s back and expanding his territorry, the whole of the fields of ruin and half of the blazeridge steppes are now covered in crystals, and ebonhawke lies in ruins” there would be no “let’s clean up the crystals”, no “oh well, just kill this lieutenant and everything will be fine”, the whole zone is completely changed and that is how it will stay.

THAT is a living world, not a bunch of temporary content, a piece of temporary content that leaves lasting effects. if a meteor hits and aliens come out and invade tyria, you can kill the aliens, but there’s still a dirty great hole in the ground.

the living story isn’t alive, it’s just a big dynamic event chain and like dynamic events, everything goes back to normal when it’s done, there may be an NPC or two after, but that’s about it

a living world can’t be just “fixed”, here needs to be a lasting effect, and I think that there’s one thing that causes that feeling of everything being fine:

We’ve never yet failed.

there has never been a single time when we’ve screwed up so completely that things can’t be fixed, imagine if whilst we were messing around in the molten foundry, the dredge and flame legion blew up butcher’s block and junction haven. and by blew up I mean “destroyed so badly that rebuilding is impossible”, but no, we stopped the alliance before anything bad happened, go us, woo.

(this is another complaint I have, in the iron marches you can fail an event where the flame legion cause ANOTHER SEARING, it takes literally 5 minutes for the charr to rebuild and repopulate their village from scratch, yeah, the thing that destroyed ascalon the first time can just be fixed in 5 minutes)

It seems strange for me to say it, but PLEASE ANET LET US FAIL, our victories always happen just in time to avoid permanent change, let us fail at least once and that failure be reflected in the world forever, make it so that at least once we have a phyrric victory, or the victory isn’t stopping bad things, but just trying to limit the damage. just once. please?

I’m guessing it’s the perfect environment to introduce the minions of the DSD. The Consortium are going to be in just as much trouble as the adventurers & refugees by the end.

Perhaps it is revealed that the karka have been DSD minions this whole time? Dun dun dunnnnnnnn!

the thing is, we already know roughly what bubbles’ minions look like, they’re tentacled monstrosities made from water, imagine morpha from ocarina of time

as for what I’d like to see: “Friendly” karka, they ARE sapient after all, they’re just all territorial jerks, much like the red hylek, I can imagine one trying to learn english/common/krytan/whatever to explain why they keep attacking us and to attempt to settle the conflict

agreed, it’s also fairly strange that you can’t see SSC from caledon or sparkfly, especially at morgan’s spiral in caledon, it’s less than a minute swim from there to owain’s refuge…

even if they don’t add zone entrances to those places, it would be nice if they added some visible landmass to caledon and sparkfly, just so that it doesn’t seem like there’s an invisible island for some reason

edit: huh, I was half expecting landmass to be kittened out…

Elem getting greatsword?

Calcifire.1864

how about this as an idea:
a new elite skill called “glyph of conjuring”
when activated, summons a conjured weapon of your current attunement, this weapon has no time limit or charges, and will change shape based on your current attunement

also, change firey greatsword to an arcane greatsword (because why do we have a fire skill in the elites? the others are element neutral)

there, a new weapon for us to use with little to no work on ANet’s part

ironically, it would fill the concept of weapon swapping better than our attunements, because each weapon has a clearly defined and unique role

yeah, that would be prefectly lore friendly for an ele to wield a great axe. Personaly I am looking forwart to get rakes, hoe, shovel (surely ele is best farmer at the moment).

heh, nice pun there ANet

I remember learning about it on the discovery channel on a show about ancient
greece, it was a real alloy, but nobody knows the exact formula anymore

I find it very humorous that we are running around mining raw lumps of “alloy”.

I find it even more humorous that we mine “gold ore” :P
(seriously ANet, wouldn’t it have made more sense to have let us mine gold nuggets and compress them into ingots?)

TBH, we can use axes and GSes anyway…

we can also use bows, shields, 2 handed hammers, and punch the ground with enough force to make giant spikes of rock spear our enemies…

I don’t think that physical strength is a problem for any profession :P

Also, I believe they didn’t focus Zhaitan on sylvari but simply Trahaerne

If it weren’t for the Pale Reavers, the Pale Tree, A Light in the Darkness, and the cleansing ritual coming from the Pale Tree’s bark (Caladbolg), I’d probably agree.

But there’s a lot more sylvari elements than human elements in the fight.

The final boss will either be DSD, the last dragon to wake(or maybe that’s Mordremoth?) which is powerful enough to keep Tyria completely isolated, or Primordus if the Asura don’t get him, since he was the first to awake and possibly the biggest(assuming).

Kralkatorrik was the last known dragon to wake – with Mordremoth possibly either being waking around the time Primordus did, or last if even will ever wake. And Primordus is likely the smallest, all things considered, while Kralk seems to thus far be the biggest.

if the mystic telescope in arah is to be believed, mordremoth is still asleep.

it will wake up when the constellation forms, but looking through the telescope, it’s still forming

think they went a little crazy with the filter. glmp3d = kitten.

that kinda makes sense, since that word also refers to BDSM fetishes (one who is restricted and suffering abuse for the pleasure of the abuser :P)

although why “BDSM fetishes” is perfectly fine though…

to point out the relevant bit:

spatial surge and other beam skills will pierce, instead of just clipping through enemies

in other words, when scepter 1A zaps an enemy, any enemies between you and the target will also be zapped.

the OriginalPoster (screw you forum software) is suggesting that water blast should be turned into a beam like water spraying from a hose, that way it would heal people around the enemy, and in the path of the beam

(seriously, “the” “OP” “is” “suggesting” is kittened out >_<)

wat,exactly about the op?

just me grappling with the forum software :P
that string of words is censored because from the “P” in OP to the S in suggesting it is a profanity :P (specifically, a yellowish waste liquid produced by the kidneys)

remove stupid morale bar in balthazar event

in Dynamic Events

Calcifire.1864

I know that there is one part nearish the beginning which is almost instant failure: the risen nobles

if anyone doesn’t know, nobles have been given a new ability: wells, yes, the same things necros have, and they shadowstep.

the 5th or so wave in this event spawns 20 or so risen nobles.

this is a breakdown of what happens usually:

1. nobles spawn
2. nobles shadowstep to cluster of NPC’s
3. nobles instantly put down a well
4. NPC’s attack nobles because apparently, NPC’s have no concept of “don’t stand in the evil, you moron”
5. any NPC’s that AREN’T in the wells run into the wells to attack the nobles
6. all NPC’s are now in wells
7. wells tick once
8. all NPC’s are dead
9. event fails

there is exactly one situation where this doesn’t occur and it is if a player sacrifices themself to get the nobles to waste their shadowstep/well

and then the NPC’s run to the nobles/wells/dead player anyway and die to the wells >_<

there is no way of stopping this, no way of removing the wells, no way of stopping the wells from being put down, and no way of preventing the NPC’s from leeroying to their deaths.

the only thing you can do is pray that the wells dissipate before all the NPC’s die and hope that you have enough morale left to survive the steps of “unavoidable meteor showers of RNG death”

The Living Story - far too vague.

Calcifire.1864

But that’s okay, keep telling me the story isnt happening….considering we are already in phase 2 of 4. I actually believe that the story isnt happening, because ANET dropped the ball on telling a story this time and focused way to hard on a system instead.

Teaser content is teaser content, it doesn’t matter whether it’s the first second or third instalment. I directed you basically to the article without a link , so I can’t blame your fool-hardiness.

Same article as before this time with link:
Angel Leigh McCoy – Living Story: Evolution

We’ve had long meetings, with our most colorful thinking caps on, to discuss how we will pay off all your patience during these early months of teaser content,

Colin Johanson, MMORPG interview on Flame and Frost*

World-narrative wise, February continues to build the fundamentals of this story to provide more hints and growth to this storyline as it builds into the core components and takes off in March and April.

And
Colin Johanson in a 4 part interview with Guildwars2guru.com

GURU: So what kind of sort of changes might we see to the world itself as the Living Story progresses?
Colin: I think you’re not going to see a ton of stuff in February. It’s mostly just a little more setup stuff. We hit the end of the year and decided to really make that a big thing for 2013 and as a result we really just didn’t have time to build that much stuff yet. I think, looking ahead, March and April is more when we kind of get in to the cadence of what a Living Story can be. Other than that we’ll build from there as the year goes on.

Just to note, that part 3 and part 4 are more in the right direction, means that its also still teaser content, I believe. And they focus on the system much more because once it is in place, then you can tell the story, It’s like inventing the TV before inventing the TV program.

I have to point this out…

The system was already in place. Any programmer worth their pay knows how to write an automated script. Anet is pulling legs if they think setting flags in a script is somehow new.

Too much gullibility here. It’s not teaser content, its being lazy.

hell, we saw it in halloween.

remember the big timer that counted down to MKT’s arrival?
and every 25% or so the statue changed?

now just hide that timer and OH MY GOSH IT’S A LIVING STORY GUYS! THIS IS COMPLETELY NEW AND NEVER DONE BEFORE!

ironically, the halloween event was probably better handled than this, if only because the “spectral energy reading” gave us a sense of scale and presence, we knew that badness was going down because of the big ticking timebomb in the corner of the screen, we hunted all over the world for info to thorn’s past, we saw that the spectral energy was causing tangible problems that was linked to the progress bar and could go out and investigate said problems.

this on the other hand is just “at some arbitrary point, these people will have more dialog options”

ofc, I mainly play PvE, so it’s an entirely selfish position, but if other classes get boon hate, it doesn’t affect me in PvE, if we get nerfed, it DOES affect me and PvPers as well
