Giving a voice to Mordremoth was a mistake IMO. Zhaitan never spoke to you and that was awesome IMO because it underlined its otherness from regular beings, it seemed beyond our mortal views, as an eternal like him should be.

in mordremoth’s case I think it made sense.

as a non-sylvari you only ever hear him speak in the dream, when you are actually fighting him mind-to-mind

don’t forget that the final battle is just an abstraction of what is going on so the players can interact better, the actual battle would have probably ended up like the last episode of neon genesis evangelion.

we understand him there because for a few brief moments, all players are like the sylvari: part of mordremoth’s mind rebelling against the greater part. hell, he even says “you and I are the same, twisting others to serve your will, why not become one with me?” implying that if you’d failed, you’d have become one of mordremoth’s “seeds” like trahearne nearly did (ie, you would retain an individual independent mind, but that mind would be another individual mordremoth instead of you).

we only understood mordremoth’s mind’s voice because whilst in the dream we were PART of mordremoth’s mind. it’s a shame Kasmeer wasn’t there, they could have added a line where she says she tried to see how you were doing but found your mind as incomprehensible as mordremoth’s whilst you were fighting.

if you don’t complete your personal story and therefore lack a mentor, trahearne gets summoned as the final illusion.

what does he say as he spawns in?

it is actually semi-possible to use glint underwater.

activate your facets then get in the water, they will remain active as long as you don’t switch to shiro or mallyx.

I don’t see why we can’t use glint fully underwater really, the only problem would be the facet of elements active ability, and you could just make it attack your target rather than be a ground targeted ability, or even just make it affect around you like necro wells

Mordremoth wasn’t made braindead. He was killed. There is a bit of a difference.

The real question is why did Mordremoth’s death result in a magical explosion along the ley lines, while Zhaitan’s didn’t.

imagine a vacuum cleaner sucking water into a bucket of infinite size through a series of hoses.

that vacuum is the only thing keeping the water in that bucket.

as soon as the vacuum stops working, that bucket will empty back into the hoses due to the water pressure. fast.

zhaitan was eating random magical objects, discrete packets of energy (and was starving when we killed him due to how we were fighting him). mordremoth was plugged into the ley lines directly and eating MUCH more energy.

Revenant/Mistfire Wolf Elite skill?

Calcifire.1864

don’t forget that rev also only has one underwater weapon

It’s all they need tbh as it is both a great melee and ranged weapon. Right now it is bugged as well as the skill 2 costs NO energy (oversight I am sure and they will add an energy cost to it, mark my words) and is super powerful. Run with Shiro and all you need to do is spam skill 2 and the elite and you are fine.

Roy actually answered about that a bit ago andit’s working as intended. it’s not supposed to have energy or CD, skill 2 is fairly unique in that it’s a “second autoattack”

it would be unfair to give Rev only one underwater weapon but make it unviable for either condi or direct damage, so if you look, all of our abilities are dual-natured.

AA is a ranged condi autoattack, Spear2 is a power based melee autoattack, spear3 is a condi bubble that you can detonate for a power based explosion, spear 4 is a ranged condi application over time that you can consume to shadowstep and do a melee attack, and spear 5 is a CC skill

Missing an ending

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Calcifire.1864

But that’s what I am saying, they’ve switched to an episodic format so there aren’t really endings anymore. We wrapped up what we expected to do, but now we’re looking ahead to the next thing. The only real ending we’ve seen was at the end of the Personal Story and that’s because they’ve switched formats.

that’s no excuse. an episodic format means they need to include a sequel hook, not just leave it at that.

LS1 ended with mordremoth waking up, the sequel hook is “prepare for the dragon”, LS2 ended with the pact fleet crashing and the sylvari turning, the sequel hook is “prepare to enter the jungle”

HoT ended with the egg glowing, the sequel hook is…“go check the egg”? but checking the egg does nothing, it’s unchanged.

it lacks an ending AND it lacks a decent hook for LS3, we need either closure or an immediate identifiable threat.

Can anyone tell me where this “chak gerent” is?

it’s the Tangled Depths version of vinewrath.

you split into 5 groups along the lanes and have to do events to lure out a boss that makes its way to a cannon at the end of the lane.

other chak will rush down the tunnel to the cannon too, which need to be killed.

if a single lane fails to lure out their boss and their cannon gets destroyed, the entire event fails. which is why nobody has yet completed it.

I get the feeling that the Mouth is likely mordremoth’s “default” form that he takes when he needs to personally make an appearance rather than through a vine or breacher, sort of a “this is serious” form, whilst the “lard lizard” mordremoth is his mental projection when he wants to interact with someone on a 1:1 scale (to offer a more personal beatdown).

Calcifire.1864

I haven’t seen the Mouth of Mordremoth yet, but I’m going to guess that it’s the “vine monster” seen in the trailer? If so, I would take that to be more like the Avatar of the Pale Tree than the Mouth of Zhaitan – a physical extension of itself. In the final story step (SPOILERS), it’s said that Mordremoth is all of its corruption.

I do think that Mordremoth has an actual body though – remember the end of Season 1? The cinematic showed a flesh and blood draconian mouth. Where was this thing? is my question.

I’ll think more on it when I see the Mouth of Mordremoth in game though. But the meta event calls it the “Shadow of the Dragon” which was a dragon champion.

@Thz: His mind form is a bit weird, but rather than calling it a fat troll it looked more like a krait oratuss with legs.

I get why they didn’t have it to be a huge thing – because how can you fight such? – but I think an GW1 Abaddon/ME2 final boss styled fight would have been far better.

the vine monster does not appear at all, kinda disappointing really :<

they really needed to move the skills to the start of the track, reduced the price SEVERELY, (like 10 HP per skill instead of 30), and made the rest of the traits more expensive to make up for it, Revenants are WAY more dependant on their skills than any other profession. it’s ridiculous that we don’t have a full bar of utilities until 400 points, and don’t even have ANY utilities until the track is almost half over.

it’s like if Reaper Shroud required 200 points just to unlock skills 1-4

What’s up with that egg? (I guess I missed its significance). And who the heck is Glint?

did you play LS2 or listen to the exalted? they go over it in pretty deep detail…

I played some of it (the free episodes). But if I missed it, it’s not that surprising. The only stories I’ve been able to follow in MMOs are the WoTLK lore (because Arthas was a cool character), and FFXIV’s story (which is my favourite). And I played WoW for about 7 years. I guess I like the gameplay more than the story most of the time.

well get on a comfy pair of slippers and a warm mug of cocoa from your impaled buddy, because this is going to be a pretty complex story.

basically, she is THE single biggest driving force in the lore across all of GW2 and a good chunk of GW1.

a long time ago, a group of snake-people called The Forgotten figured out a way to grant dragon champions free will, and tried it on a champion of kralkatorrik called Glaust (basically the original Shatterer). this newly freed dragon named herself Glint and it turned out she could see the future.

she created a book called The Flameseeker Prophecies (yes, the same one people have glued onto a shield) which told of the downfall of another ancient race, The Mursaat. naturally the Mursaat were not too happy that they were going to get extincted by demons and used the Prophecies to cheat by making sure the events that were foretold didn’t happen (namely by killing the ones the Prophecies called “Chosen” and using their souls to keep the door to hell closed). that ended up failing because they didn’t expect one specific chosen to have plot armor on account of being the GW1 player character.

she also put in a series of countermeasures to ensure that when the dragons woke back up, the world would have a fighting chance: the first were The Exalted, humans who sacrificed themselves to do what you see in HoT, the second was the egg.

sadly, she ended up dying because logan wanted to get in jennah’s pants rather than stopping kralkatorrik murdering crystal dragon jesus, though considering she was able to see the future, she probably knew it was going to happen anyway, the master of peace was in on her plan and was trying to take the egg to Tarir, but season 2 of the living story happened and caithe got the egg instead.

as for why it was so important to get the sausage and Egg mcguffin to Tarir… we don’t know, it’s implied by the ending that the egg either contained the blast of ley energy safely (unlike what happened with zhaitan, where tequatl and the remaining risen got a power boost, and potentially made the other EDs stronger), or it has become the “new” elder dragon by absorbing mordremoth’s energy (in which case, the point of the Exalted is to be the worlds best babysitters and raise the new elder dragon to be not evil)

she’s also living in Rytlock’s head now, and fuelling some of his revenant powers (specifically herald skills)

Well having finally got through it I can say a few things [SPOILERS]:

I was surprised to find it was the end of the story – I thought the pacing of the initial part of the story up till Rata Novus was much better. After this I thought it rushed ahead way too fast and all of a sudden it’s like “oh, ok so this is it?”
The fight with Mordremoth itself was very tedious. But then I hate pve bullet sponges in general so I’m not the target audience for these “boss” fights…
The glider section bugged out so I had to restart a few times. But once the gliding worked, it was a relatively easy, but extremely tedious fight – ie a test of stamina/endurance and not skill.
- the scenery was as usual stunning. I’m constantly in awe of the environments the Anet team is able to create. Amazing.
Overall I thought it was a good concept of entering the Dream, and well done despite me not enjoying bullet sponge boss fights.
Sad to see Trahearne die – it seems his voice actor did the best job right here at the end. I actually like his character. Looking forward to the next LS to see what happens in the future.
Edit: for the record I soloed the end hence why I might have found it tedious. I imagine it might be faster in a group.

Your experience of story pacing summed up mine perfectly – excellent up to Rata Novus then it felt like I skipped ahead somehow to the bottom of the map of Dragon Stand.

That coupled with the lack of ‘epicness’ of the final boss made it overall feel somewhat wanting. I get it that his body is the whole jungle but some resemblance to what the trailer suggested would’ve been nice.

Overall the design of the zones are amazing. I particularly loved the design of Mordremoth’s spiral ‘backbone’ leading to his heart and ultimately to his mind. Well done to the team you really have set the bar high.

the spine part was great, if you know anything about biology, that is the part that instantly hits you about what mordremoth really is:

it’s not just a spiral, it’s a double helix joined by thorns.

it’s DNA.

THAT is the Heart of Thorns, and it’s even in the logo of the expansion: a dragon in a spiral.

that shape perfectly sums up mordremoth, it isn’t just a dragon, it is the underlying pattern of all mordrem, their mental DNA.

the second I saw that helix, everything clicked. if mordremoth is DNA, then all plant based biology in the jungle is mordremoth’s body.

and echoing everyone else: the ending was VERY abrupt.

you stab trahearne, get a cutscene of glint’s egg absorbing the released ley energy, and… that’s it. no epilogue, nothing, even visiting the egg after doesn’t show any changes.

I mean, we got an afterparty for killing zhaitan, we don’t even get a memorial service for Eir, Scruffy, and Trahearne, as well as all of the others we lost?

we just get dumped out onto a rock and we WP away with no fanfare or even acknowledgement. I hope the first episode of LS3 is soon and it gives us a decent epilogue.

Calcifire.1864

The final boss was a bit of a shock tbh, taimi wants to find mordremoths vulnerability and that would take weeks as she said and then your personal character goes: ‘I know his vulnerability’ and everyone goes omg amazing idea.
Also kind of strange how mordremoth has zero self reflection and doesn’t take actions on protecting his ‘vulnerability’.

to be fair, his vulnerability wasn’t that exposed, there were only two with access to the dream at the time, one being in a coma and half a continent away, and the other was moments away from being corrupted.

by the time both you and mordy realized the dream could be used to kill him, you were already too close to stop.

the alternative that I would have chosen if I were mordremoth would have been to take that tendril and bash trahearne against the walls until he became a fine mulch the second he brought up the fact that he could access mordremoth’s mind, but that would have been WAY too brutal for a T-Rated game.

Yeah, the Rata Novus bit seems pretty pointless, in hindsight. “Mordremoth has a weakness! We don’t know what it is, but let’s charge straight into his lair and hope for the best!”

Not only that, but now I’m left wondering — what was Zhaitan’s weakness? We just blew him up with cannons. Seemed to be very effective.

Hopefully they will do more with Rata Novus in the future. It should be a VERY rich lore location. The little tidbits of info you find in the explorable area don’t quench my thirst.

with Zhaitan, it suffers a bit from the whole “fragmentedness” of the personal story, you only get to see it as a whisper’s character if you choose to recruit Gorr.

all of the pact’s energy based weaponry is based on polarized magic working under the assumption that all the dragons work like zhaitan: they absorb ambient dragon energy, polarize it, and shoot it back (which we now know isn’t the case and that it only works against zhaitan).

people have started sarcastically saying that since Mordy’s weakness was Mind, Zhaitan’s was Death, and that was true, we were starving him by killing his mouths, then feeding him poisoned necromantic dragon energy.

in Mordy’s case, that wouldn’t work because he is a mind and has no body to destroy.

it’s interesting however that the method we used to kill Mordy is the same as the failed attempt to kill Kralks, which would imply that Snaff’s idea was doomed from the start no matter what Logan did, but also correct in that it can be used to kill AN elder dragon, so perhaps some methods that failed against zhaitan may work against the other dragons

Calcifire.1864

You haven’t had a HoT experience yet so how can it be ruined.
You are QQ’ing based on a smattering of facts and a whole truckload of assumptions and guesswork.

there are no assumptions.. only facts.. and these facts will ruin my gaming experience.. since I have to spoil myself of contant I wanted to enjoy slowly

Then enjoy it slowly. I can do it. That means you can do it. You won’t be the most effective herald in gaming history but you will nevertheless be a herald if you have at least 60 HP to spare.

Don’t worry so much, just enjoy the game.

herald is goingto be in a particularly nasty spot for two reasons however:

we don’t have a chance to get the bonus points everyone else does

our big mechanical change is Legendary Dragon Stance. guess what happens if you equip it? you lose all your utilities, since utilities on Rev are tied to stance, we need to buy a heal, three utilities and the elite just to have access to a utility bar AT ALL.

for 60 points all other classes gain a weapon and mechanic, and in return lose a traitline. Heralds gain a weapon and lose a traitline, and if they try to use their mechanic they lose their utilities until they get more points.

it’s like if reapers had to spend hero points to unlock each individual reaper shroud skill.

Will we be at a disadvantage starting Herald?

in Revenant

Posted by: Calcifire.1864

Calcifire.1864

I would personally agree that eles should get Earth unlocked with the rest of their attunements, it’s stupid that they don’t, then again I’m one of the people that despises the NPE and thinks everything should be unlockable based on the player’s choice like at release.

my complaint isn’t a complaint, nor is it a debate.

it’s asking for clarification: due to our unique utility switching mechanics will we be at a disadvantage compared to other elite specs because of our lack of utilities, and if so, what is being done to mitigate that? (for example, giving us the skills baseline but making other things more expensive, or by moving our skills to the front of the reward path as we rely on them far more than other classes rely on theirs) otherwise our new class mechanic is useless until we get the skills unlocked, a limitation that no other class shares (a reaper can still use reaper shroud without shouts).

I have no idea why people then decided to spout offtopic things like workarounds or to be happy that I can use knowledge tomes to skip leveling, or tried to make it a debate, but sadly there is no way to contact a dev directly other than the forums.

Good to hear focused reply, but I disagree, Unique Quirks between classes mechanics should not be discouraged. Especially if they converge to balanced points later.
You might as well complain that guardian has access to swiftness from lvl 3 due to staff 4 while no other class has swiftness. If you agree again with my example and we keep going down this rabbit hole we will end up with only 1 profession in GW2.

I also hope you will recognize that Heralds New class mechanic is NOT Legendary Dragon Stance it is instead Facet of Nature.
Legendary Dragon Stance == Shouts for Reaper, which they do not have access to after 60 points.
Facet of Nature == Reaper Shroud, both of which are available after 60 points.

We’ll have to agree to disagree then, though I think we may be disagreeing on different points, my underlying concern is that herald will be considered useless until it has most (if not all) of the skills, making people rush through the content just so they can enjoy herald properly. whilst all other classes can instantly start using their mechanic to its fullest, herald is stuck with an empty stance, leading to a bad experience overall (you can see this already, people are already stating their intention to either ignore herald or to rush the points, rather than allowing for a feeling of progression as elite specs were intended to do)

it’s an especially significant problem for Revenant, as Rev was built with Herald in mind, it is an intrinsic part of the class rather than an additional part like the other elite specs. (I’ve actually seen and experienced this before, which is the reason for my concern, Astrologian was very similar in FFXIV, and it shows. it feels “incomplete” when you are playing it at lv 50, because unlike all the non-heavensward jobs that were built around 50, it was always meant to be played at lv60. it feels great at 60, and incomplete at 50, whilst the other jobs feel great at 50 and better at 60. it made leveling as AST feel like removing weights rather than getting stronger)

(this is my main beef with the NPE as well, it promotes rushing through content by making you feel overly limited early on whilst teasing later unrestricted content, making early-game unattractive, as opposed to making late game desirable (the stick instead of the carrot), the end result being “thank god that’s over, now I can start to have fun”, rather than “that was fun, but this will be even better”)

for “mechanic” I’ve been going off the minor adept trait in the elite specializations (eg, I consider both FoN, and LDS to be our mechanic as they are specifically named in the Herald Adept Minor trait)

Crafting System

Expensive? What are you talking about? No money spent on any crafting I have done and with just harvesting everything I come across I have done 500 on some and 400 and higher on the others.

opportunity cost, you could have sold all those materials you gathered for a roughly equivalent price it would have took you to buy them

eg, buying 5 iron for 1s each vs gathering 5 iron, you could have sold that iron for 5s so making something with that iron “cost” you 5s no matter how you obtained it

It is a new class so be happy to use tome of knowledge on them and not need to level it to 80.

“just be happy that revenants are allowed to use waypoints”

consistency of standard mechanics is expected and not something to count as a positive, and certainly not something that should be counted against other complaints.

I don’t understand any more what is your complaint?
When anyone unlocks an elite spec they get the mechanic and weapon, so do revenants.
If they want to use them they have to slot the empty trait line, as do revenants.
If they haven’t unlocked the utility they want, they slot some other skills, as do revenants by not equipping Legendary Dragon stance.
(You have brought up all of these “arguments” in this thread. So agreed? They are all not supporting you?)

(assuming heal is first unlock)
Now the only inequality I see is both unlock heal and you as Revenant want to use Glints OP heal together with Shiro, then you are punished by having no utilities on half your bar. But it is SO late to complain about that, revenants have less utility build variety, that is their core profession mechanic that we have known about for 9 months, and in return you get twice the heal skills, twice the utilities and twice the elites.
It is not an inequality that is brought up by elite specs costing a lot it is like says Eles are worst class because it takes them 20 levels to unlock earth attunement(iirc) so they are compromised.

Your favorite "hide away" place?

I’m not sure if they are still there, but I remember about four entrances to “Teleportasia” that I always used as my hideaways (not counting the old glitches with Phase Retreat)

one in straits of devastation where the Bloodstone Caves were in GW1 (there is a cave that seems to just be incomplete, you can walk forward and do things like fall into a stalagmitethat looked like a stalagtite)

one in cursed shore (tothe north of the first pact camp there is a sort of penninsula on the land (not sure what else to call it), going northwest from there lets you break out of the map)

one in fireheart rise (I walkedup a hill, fell into a crack and into “the ocean below”)

and two in bloodtide coast(walked up amountain, fell through a crack and found myself above a cave roof).

the second bloodtide one is still there in fact: from the waypoint everyone gathers at for TT, try to climb up the mountain from the west(near the WP).you will eventually reach the top and find an incomplete area.

I absolutely ADORE those “un-places”, they feel like a secret that even reality doesn’t know about :P

the HoM and my home instance are my other “get away for a while” places, though I tend to just try and find a mountain or tree that looks climbable and try and get on top of it :P

Yeah that was my main concern too, but let’s be honest: would you even use a spec that’s not at least 50% unlocked? I think I won’t.

I probably would on my Reaper, sure I lose a traitline, but Greatsword and Reaper Shroud make up for it, especially since I’m planning on going minion master, so the only utility I need from Reaper is Rise! and the only important trait is literally the first major one you unlock :P

You can choose a different legend except Glint so you don’t have empty slots.
Problem solved

I wouldn’t say it’s “solved”, it’s a workaround (and is what I was planning on doing if it was the case (Shiro/Mallyx), this thread was mainly to point out to Roy that we rely on hero points to a FAR greater and more debilitating degree than other Elites) but the core problem is still there.

all of the other elite spec mechanics are still useable (if less effective) without their traits and skills, whilst Herald is literally useless until you add skills.

Now that we finally know how the elite specs will unlock, I’m wondering if we will be at a massive disadvantage compared to everyone else.

If we need to unlock our skills, doesn’t that make Legendary Dragon Stance completely worthless for a while?

For example: Unlocking Reaper will let a necro use GS and Reaper Shroud, but they don’t have their shouts, so they can use their old skills until they unlock the shouts.

Herald will unlock Shield and Legendary Dragon Stance, however, since our skills are locked to a specific stance, we’ll be stuck with empty slots until we unlock all of the skills. We get given a new mechanic, but if we try to USE that mechanic we are punished by losing skills (to the point where LDS is worthless until you have unlocked ALL of the skills).

Every other class loses a traitline at the start of their elite spec, but Revenant is the only one that loses a traitline AND their utility skills.

Am I missing something (eg, we get skills for free but other traits are more expensive, or all of our skills are at the start of the path), or is herald really going to be useless for everything but Facet of Nature and “you can use a shield” until we invest a large chunk of hero points? (and due to being the new class, we don’t even have “extra” hero points from Central Tyria like other classes to offset the problem)

Caithe isn’t your herald, your herald is telling you ABOUT Caithe, that’s what heralds are: medieval facebook, they go around telling people about you, and then bring back news of the world to you.

it’s a neat mechanical pun: Glint’s Herald would be someone who goes arounds saying “have you heard of our Lady and Savior: Glint the Dragon?”, which is essentially what we DO, we take on aspects of Glint and share them with others, letting them know what Glint is about and sharing her knowledge/power.

Revenant bows someday?

Calcifire.1864

there’s a spin on bows we’ve not seen yet: time-bows :P

the autoattack fires a mist-arrow and does a small amount of damage but gives a stacking debuff on the target, the #2 skill consumes that debuff, opens a portal to the mist, and releases REAL versions of those arrows that do double the damage of an equivalent number of arows fired (eg, if each arrow did 500 damage, and you got kittens, the #2 hit would do 5k).

crazy high risk/reward and burst and completely different to any bows we’ve seen up to now
