The fact that anyone thinks infinite condition stacks is even remotely balanced is laughable.

So you agree that direct damage is currently not even remotely balanced? Each condition or even a few stacks is equal to ONE direct damage attack..

Right, because it’s not like you can apply conditions & and do direct damage at the same time… oh wait.

You can have 100 warriors with direct damage builds that also happen to apply conditions & you think it’s ok to have that bonus damage just continue to rise? The Dragons are enough of a push over now, you want 300 stacks of bleed on it too?

No less balanced than a infinite number of zerkers.

So if they just equip Sup Sigil of Earth That won’t make the damage skyrocket? oh ok.. I’m sure people will really want that condition necro in their dungeon so much more.

I don’t know where this magical fantasy that condition damage isn’t done on top of direct damage comes from. Sure the cap sucks but infinite stacks isn’t the answer.

no, it won’t make them do more damage, because with 0 condition damage it would be like flogging the dragon to death with a strand of gossamer thread

an infinite number of zerkers willdeal an infinite amount of damage instantly, an infinite amount of necros will deal an infinite amount of damage, over 10 seconds or so. (the metaphor kind of breaks down since we’re dealing with infinity here, but put simply, the warriors will deal the same infinity as the necros in 1 second, but it will take the necros some time)

oh no they won’t because only the first 25 bleeds count.

as for bleeds that don’t have DD: Blood is Power, a 20 second CD which adds 2 30 second bleeds.

it can be rendered useless with two crits from a warrior with that hideous minor trait that grants you bleeds on crit

You say that as if spec’ing for conditions is done at the cost of direct damage. There isn’t a condition build in the game that can’t also inflict direct damage via weapon skills. If you’re not doing enough damage in PvE to get credit for loot, then you’re doing something terribly wrong. You. Not the game. YOU.

ah, ahah, AHAHAHAHAH

do you know how much direct damage my scepter hits do?

163/163/266 for the autoattack chain

that’s me in exotic rabid gear with an exotic PVT chest (because the only chest available is khilbrons and I’m still saving up), and rare carrion trinkets (P/V/CDmg) ie, the gear I’m going to be wearing when I want to make things bleed. those numbers will go DOWN as I get better gear for my trinkets and obtain khilbron’s coat

how much do they do when I focus on pure power?

172/172/246

that’s me in full exotic explorers (P/Prec/MF) gear with the same trinkets (P/V/CDmg)

(the last one goes down because it scales with CD as well)

sure, we can do weapon damage, a whole 163, WOW, how much does a warrior’s autoattack do I wonder?

oh, let’s check my damage if I was wearing rabid and using my condition dagger in my main hand

2×400ish/400ish/600ish

huh… so my dagger in rabid is doing quadruple what my scepter does in explorers…

if you look at the damage any weapon designed to cause conditions does, you’ll see that their damage coefficients are TERRIBLE, it’s assumed that the damage will be coming from bleeds, which, oh wait, we can’t use because the full zerker warrior keeps overwriting my nice powerful 10 second bleeds with his 0 condition damage 1 second bleeds everytime he crits… WHICH IS ALL THE TIME SINCE HE’S WEARING ZERKER GEAR.

isnt the concept of Regen kind of flawed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

it doesn’t overwrite it, duration boons/conds work in a FIFO queue, the first regen/burn applied is attributed to the person who cast it, and takes into account their stats, then it goes to whoever applied it second including their stats and so on.

if you had 3 seconds of regen healing for 100 hps, and someone added another for 2 seconds healing 50 hps, you’d heal for 400 health over 5 seconds, the first 3 seconds you’d regen 300 hp, then for 2 more seconds you’d regen for another 100.

The issue is big because of PvP. Condition Necro’s and Trap Rangers are a huge part of the meta at the moment. If conditions get buffed and are tracked independently the name of the game will have to change to Condition Wars instead of Guild Wars. All of the sPvP and WvWvW Fights will come down to who can apply the most conditions the fastest.

oh no, whatever will you do, you will have bleeds that do total damage less than half of a warrior autoattack to the face. how terrible.
if you have a condition that hits for 100 dps for 10 seconds and a warrior that hits for 1000, they do the SAME DAMAGE the difference is that if you have only 1k hp left, the condition will take 10 seconds to kill you, but the warrior will kill you instantly, and you can remove the condition to completely negate it.

also, screw WvWvW, anet don’t balance around it and they never have

Warriors get lascerate instead of bleed.
Rogues get rupture instead of bleed.
Rangers get pierce instead of bleed.
etc etc.

Just like that, you invalidated any idea you might have had.

Best bet in my opinion would to still be able to deal the damage of the bleeds if a target can no longer receive any bleeds. Of course there would have to be much thought and formulaic expressions for this to ever work and show some semblance of balance.

I fail to take your meaning on it invalidating my idea. And converting it to burst is sketchy as some classes can get to the stack limit quickly and overflow damage could become an issue in PvP. Especialy with AE bleeds and the smallest amount of effort.

he’s pointing out that you said rogues and rupture in the same sentence, and therefore implying that you play WoW and should be ignored.

in other words, he’s trolling, it’s actually a very good idea, although it still will cause problems if there is more than one class in the group

Well Piken Square is the equivalent in that it’s the EU RP server. But if you’re just wanting a lot of people about in PVE I’d also recommend Desolation or…the names gone completely out of my head. It begins with G and is one of the very high population ones.

Gandara? (or is it Garanda?)

if you do decide to guest to Deso, take it from me, AVOID GRENTH.

We’re possibly the only server to ever fail grenth at the loot farm stage (and then fail the escort on the first knight spawns) >_<

expanding on the haemorrage idea, it could work like burning, when a hemorrage is applied, the total damage per bleed is added up and the oldest bleed is applied, then the next oldest and so on until there are no more haemorrage’s left. it solves the problem of the bandwidth (and likely would IMPROVE bandwidth), and the code for burning is already there, the only difference is that it would need to convert a bleed to a hemorrage (ie, converting a bleed’s damage per tick to damage per second).

What class would you pick in real life?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Calcifire.1864

Warriors already exist, though they would use guns in our time.

Guardians, similar to Warriors, would use guns in our time.

Necros would be jailed / killed as it would be highly illegal.

Rangers essentially already exist.

Engineers essentially already exist.

Thieves essentially already exist.

All classes in real life can heal since we have antibiotics.

That leaves the Mesmer and Elementalist. Both use magic that doesn’t exist here, so I would think they would be the two best choices.

I’d go with Elementalist since we could generate our own electricity, start our own fires for heat / cooking, use the water to never be thirsty, and manipulate the earth to landscape.

necros would be jailed/killed for using lumps of meat as puppets but mesmers, a class that literally flays your mind until you die are perfectly fine?

don’t forget that for norn and human, necromancy is a widely accepted religion, charr see the value of being able to make weapons from meat, asura just see it as something to study, and sylvari use it to understand one of the things that they realistically have no experience of.

a necro IRL could take any disease you had into themself, then use it to make themself healthier (or turn their patient’s condition into things that make the paient healthier), they have a cheap way of providing eco friendly manual labour

hell, they’d probably make the BEST doctor out of all the classes when it comes to illness, they’d have an amazing understanding of anatomy, and just think of the advancements to prosthetic limbs, they could even regrow entire body parts for you. and just having one in the room with you when undergoing surgery would mean there would be a 0% chance of contracting a post surgery infection, since they’d just absorb it.

as for me, personally, mesmer, as awesome as necros are, the ability to control minds and spacetime is too much not to :P

I just wish they’d tone down the amount of t5 leather you get from bags. I just vendor it at this point, worthless and makes me wish I’d sold the bags on the trader.

yes, so very yes.

ATM we get leather and cloth from salvaging items, any type of armour and bags, but we only get metals from salvaging metal armour and mining, mining has a fixed rate of material gathering, but bags are obtained not only passively, but have much more cloth/leather than you get ore from mining.

heres a little anecdote, I opened 20 bags ALL OF THEM were some type of cloth or leather.

just make the chance of cloth or leather drop the same as any other mat, it’s not like we don’t get enough, hell the price on the TP is literally worse than the vendor price beause of how common the stuff is

One of the Sylvari Personal story missions is based off of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

extra points, one of the characters is called Gairwen :P

someone pointed out the green knight questline has a plants vs zombies reference.

that could expand to the entire overarching plot, sylvari are by far the most worried about the risen (the other races have their own dragon minions they focus on, charr have branded, norn have icebrood, asura have destroyers but nowhere near the amount as the other races, humans have destroyers and risen, sylvari have risen)

I’d like to know from people complaining about “DR” on pent/shelt how much experience they gain per event. I used them to get my mesmer from 78 to 80 thinking it would be quick and easy but my undergeared 78 mesmer could only end up tagging maybe 5-10 mobs an entire event so the xp was nearly non-existent while my ele has a few hundred excess skill points (after being the main source of skill points for getting my mystic clovers).

Mesmers can’t farm as efficiently. I have a lvl 80 mesmer and tried using it to farm here. Certainly not easy. At least not when compared to my ele.

wrong, so very wrong >_<

I have deceptive evasion and illusionary persona, my weps are GS and Sw/Sw and using full zerker gear (I still don’t have an MF set yet :P), utilities are mirror image, blink and feedback (no reason for the feedback, it’s just something I like to have on my bar just in case.

summon a phantasm and/or clone, dodge towards the enemies, use blurred frenzy and mind wrack, most/all mobs in that pack have now been tagged (up to 25 mobs can be tagged this way.
use blink to act as a way of getting to the middle of the mobs, and MI to add an extra few clones if you mess up the clone gen part (or give 3 seconds distotion if you screw up REALLY badly and are about to die to the pack of spiders chainpulling you).

usually, mind wrack and blurred frenzy are off CD by time the next pack spawns

it’s the instant attacks that are key when farming PP/SG, if you have a cast time, the warriors have probably killed the pack before your first attack is launched

Imagine you worked a job and at the end of every week instead of having a wage you rolled a die and whatever it landed on you were paid. Now imagine that your friend rolls 10,000 multiple times in a row, but for the past 6 months you’ve only rolled a 10. And you both do the exact same work.

It’s not fun, fair, or work. People that are unlucky are not lazy.

Imagine that you and your friend work the same job and got the same wages, but at the end of the week you routinely go to a unique gambling establishment. The rules for this establishment are that the worst you’ll walk away with is 25% of the buy-in, and the best is about 1,100 times the buy-in. You don’t know all the odds, but estimates say you have about a 20% chance of coming out slightly ahead, better odds if you game the system a little.

You can gamble, and your buddy can save up. It’s the same result either way.

What’s unfair about this?

My post directly above yours addressed the TP side of things.

If there was an NPC that sold precursors for a SET amount, this whole issue would already have been alleviated already.

There is an NPC. It’s called the Trading Post and he sells it for 800g.

Sarcasm aside, you realize that the analogy being made to yours had no unfairness. If you spend your money gambling… you’re gambling. Get over the fact that you lost money.

If you buy a lotto ticket every week, you aren’t guaranteed to win the lotto.

If your friend buys one lotto ticket and you’ve bought one every week since the beginning of the lotto, and your friend wins the lotto, is that unfair?

Mystic clovers rng should not be compared to precursor rng.. the only similarity is that both have a RNG elements, the amount of rng differs so much however, that this is where the similarities stop.

Wait, so an RNG element that is ~33% chance and you have to complete 77 times is better than the RNG element that you only have to complete once? You sure about that?

even if the chances of getting a perfect run of clovers is less than the chances of getting a precursor, the difference is that getting a precursor is binary, either you get one or you don’t.

even if you get the average of 33%, at least you feel like you’re progressing, with a precursor you can work for months without getting the drop and feel like all your time is wasted.

you can get 35 clovers and think “sweet, I’m about halfway!”, you can’t get halfway to a precursor (unless you buy one, and then you’re just playing into the hands of the uber rich, allowing them to buy up more precursors and tighten their hold on the market)

I don’t see your point here. You’re basically saying that because your progress is tangible on the Clovers, it’s easier?

not easier, but it takes the edge off

let’s take a theoretical example of two guys on excercise bikes pedalling for a thousand miles, on one a tank slowly fills with water, when it hits the top, a light turns on, on the other there is no tank.

if you toil all day in the hope that the light turns on you’ll start to have doubt eat away at you “will the light turn on soon? how long have I been doing this? am I just being messed with?”

if you can see the tank, you are sure there is progress occurring, you can see where you are, it could only require that final push and seeing the last little bit of water filling the tank could be what you need for that last boost of motivation.

it may be the same task, but which one is going to FEEL easier? a seemingly arbitrary end point, or a progress bar? and which of those is going to affect your mood and willingness to press on?

hell there’s an example in the personal story, when holding out in claw island you nearly always thing “will these undead waves ever end?”, now compare that to a timer or “faction control” bar. it’s an incredibly effective interface decision because it makes you think that there will be no end :P

Destroyer Weapons

in Lore

Posted by: Calcifire.1864

Calcifire.1864

Back in GW1, Destroyers were often shown wielding Destroyer weapons (which look almost identical to their GW2 models). Balthus Coalforge and game economics aside, I see no reason lore-wise why a player could not simply pick up one of these weapons and start wielding it. Given that Destroyers “cool” after their deaths (a phenomenon not usually seen in GW2 Destroyers), perhaps what Balthus did was specially enchant the Destroyer Weapons so they retain their heat and power even after their original wielder’s death.

One can argue that if you pick up a weapon that a destroyer used, the wielder will become exposed to dragon corruption. Especially considering that destroyers (and their weapons) are created from earth and fire by the sheer will of Primordius. In other words – such weapons need to be either “crafted” using a complicated process (Balthor Coalforge) or de-corrupted somehow. If not the wielder will get exposed to dragon corruption witch we know can only end in bad ways.

does primordus even corrupt though?

I thought that only jormag and kralkatorrik could corrupt?
(primordus and bubbles just make their minions, zhaitan can only work with dead bodies (he’s not been shown to corrupt living beings, they either die THEN get corrupted, or they serve of their own free will (it’s even said as much in the charr story, the amulets make it so you are incredibly defensive of the amulet, then the amulet slowly, imperceptively drain you of life until you are dead, then zhaitan takes control and uses the amulets to summon the horde whilst the wearer acts as a sleeper agent subverting defenses whilst decay hasn’t set in))

however, sylvari can use any items that could potentially corrupt another race, since they aren’t corruptable

with their increasing invulnerability with age, I find it hard to imagine that there is only one, hell, they should be more common than young karka since the karka are meant to be sapient (if xenophobic and territorial)

I’m also finding it hard to believe that you’re suggesting genocide (the foefire). Is more justifiable than the Charr turning to higher powers (the titans), and committing the searing, to gain lands that were once theirs.

The Charr ate, worked to death or killed for sport every human they captured. GW1, especially the bonus mission pack, made that clear. GW2 reinforced the stupidity of surrendering to the Charr. The Charr conquered a lot of human land, but where are the human descendants of the slaves they took?. Surrender was never an option. The Charr would have killed every human the Foefire did, anyway. The Foefire killed people that were about to be butchered, be worked to death or suffer other atrocity and it killed a military force. The Searing destroyed everything – the civilians, the towns, the forests, the fields – everything. Rytlock complained that Aldeburn would not surrender, but, let’s face it, the Charr never gave them that option. The Foefire was like the victim shooting the killer as the victim dies.

Ah someone who gets it.

Adelberne was a genius, not a madman. This would probably end if the charr grew a capacity for remorse, marched unarmed into the catacombs, presented adelberne with his son’s sword, and formally declared penitence for their atrocities.

nope, adelbern was a bit of a dick with the foefire, it gave the charr no hope of ever reclaiming ascalon. a direct descendant of king doric needs to take the throne in ascalon city whilst holding sothohiem.

in other words, either queen jennah or mad king thorn (if he still counts, what with being technically dead and all) needs to rule ascalon or the foefire won’t end. and if jennah snuffs it and MKT DOESN’T count, ascalon is screwed and the human ghosts are forever tormented shells of what they once were, forever feeling like they’re on fire, unable to differentiate friend from foe
(I’m actually amazed anyone defends adelbern, he killed OUR GW1 CHARACTERS AND DOOMED THEM TO ENDLESS TORMENT, at least some of them anyway)

the chests loot changes if you kill him,

No, it doesn’t.

I opened the chest, got a blue pirate boot, then killed him, the second time I killed him first, THEN opened the chest, and got a bunch of greens and an orb

And if you open the chest a third time, you’ll get something else. And if you open it a fourth time, you’ll get something else. It’s called random loot, and it’s how nearly every chest in GW2 works.

I realise this entire thread is about religion (discussing where to find an item that isn’t actually in the game), but I thought people would have figured out how chests in GW2 work, at this point.

If you can see the chest, you can loot it, and the loot you get is selected from that chest’s loot table. If the loot is only available after completing a certain event, then you won’t even see the chest until you complete the event (and if you’ve looted it recently, you’ll see it but won’t be able to open it).

It wouldn’t make any sense for items to appear inside a chest just because someone died nearby. If there was additional loot intended for people who kill the boss, that loot would drop from the boss, or from a chest that spawns when the boss dies, to make it clear to players that they are getting that reward because they killed the boss.

and it wouldn’t also make sense for one chest to open when a linked chest is.

ever done craze’s folly?

the small chest there is a trap, opening it will also open the large chest later in the puzzle.

so tell me, is it not possible to have a small chest near rotbeard, that when opened will flag a large chest, invisible, uninteractable, and in the same place as the small chest as open?

what if that chest, on rotbeard’s defeat would be displayed for people who took part in the event, whilst making the small chest uninteractable?

it would be easy too: all that would be required is 2(or 4 if visibility and tangibility are handled seperately) state changes between the chests, one of which is already observable in temple and dragon chests, and the illusion of killing an enemy = better loot is perfect

if(rotbeard.isdead == true && player.tookpart == true)
{
largechest.visible = true;
smallchest.visible = false;
}
if(smallchest.opened == true)
{
largechest.opened =true;
}

I don’t think it’s Rotbeard. And I think the key to understanding this is to look at the Dev’s wording in the last hint given…

I will confirm that I looked in the game data and traced the item to its loot table to the chest that uses the loot table to the event that spawns the chest"

notice how he specifically says “spawns”. This leads me to believe it’s not Rotbeard since both the empty chest and the small chest in the room are already visible before the event to kill him fires (triggered by opening the big chest). According to the dev wording the event must completed and THEN the chest appears.

good point, so that means all chests currently in the world are out.

how many chests are currently named?
the only “large” chests I can think of are glorious chests, splendid chests, demonic chest, and swamp chest, anything that shares a name is out, since they share the same loot tables, leaving uniquely named chests

one possible place I think it could be is ashford
AFAIK, the metas for that zone are to liberate the barradin vaults and to take ascalon city (10 and 15 metas respectively)
VERY few people farm the ascalon city event, since it’s not obvious it’s a “giant boss” like other regions (queensdale has bughemoth, caledon has wurm, metrica has ele, wayfarers has maw, but the only reason so many know maw is a “giant” chain is because so many people do it it’s common knowledge)

one interesting part about the city meta is that it’s at the heart of the foefire, directly below it is the area you fight adelburn and where magdaer’s shards are.

so to recap:
retaking ascalon city meta, “giant boss” event, is directly over an area of significance to asclonian history, not commonly farmed.

the only thing I’m not sure about is the chest that spawns

Because it’s been 250 years, the charr have overthrown their Flame Legion overlords, and the two races now have a peace treaty that have groups on both sides trying to undermine the treaty and re-ignite the war. Yes, you missed pretty much ALL of the story.

As for destroying your home, technically humans destroyed the charrs’ home first, so after hundreds of years of back-and-forth, they’re calling it a draw.

The Japanese might be congenial, but they have not forgotten hiroshima and nagasaki, and I do not forget ascalon.

The humans may have taken the land first, but they did not use WMD’s on civilian populations to do it.

I accept the idea of a peace treaty, but believe the charr fully deserve their perpetual war with the ghosts of the millions they’ve tortured and starved in the searing.

I laugh whenever Rhytlock gets pasted in dungeons, he thieves from the honored dead.

humans also decided to do the equivalent of saying “well looks like we’re losing, time to pour radioactive waste on this place so nothing can live here”

and let’s not forget that the humans did this on the word of a god who’s one thought is “cause more war” and who pussied out and ran away as soon as the dragons woke up

and now the humans are getting attacked by the centaur, a race they stole the lands of and tried to enslave.

honestly, humans are no better than krait, except krait are actually native to tyria, so wait, they’re WORSE than krait, they’re pretty much alien invaders

A chest does appear after you kill him… but if I remember correctly it is just a smaller “splendid” chest off to the side of the room.

That chest is always there, even if you don’t spawn the boss.

the chests loot changes if you kill him, I opened the chest, got a blue pirate boot, then killed him, the second time I killed him first, THEN opened the chest, and got a bunch of greens and an orb

if there is an event with a boss nearby, I’d reccomend fighting the boss first, just in case :P

Why there isn't Fruit Trees?

Well, as long as we’re asking innocuous questions:

  • Why do we get walnuts from pine trees?
  • If Sylvari are “born” in the roots of trees, why are there male and female Sylvari?
  • Do female Sylvari breasts produce tree sap?
  • Do Sylvari need to be periodically watered and fertilized?
  • Why do ogres have a British accent? Are all Brits ogres or are all orgres British?
  • When the Risen say “It begins!” what is beginning?
  • Why does my Ranger like to jump off of cliffs when he uses his sword?
  • Why does my Elementalist like to burn little baby rabbits indiscriminately?
  • Why are salt water sharks and barracuda in fresh water lakes?

etc.

walnut ivy, they grow on areas where there is significant amounts of magic, eg, leaking from players as they harvest logs
they’re patterned after humans and the tree saw there was a difference
their blood is sap and sylvari’s breasts are non-functional, they are purely aesthetic
no, they drink the blood of their enemies, and the corpses of undead rotting into the soil makes an excellent mulch
yes, but we’re very classy ogres
combat
depression at fighting hordes of undead with no end in sight
sociopathy and pyromania
magical crossbreed between freshwater fish and saltwater, the hideous mutants survived, an insane time travelling asura took pity on them and genetically modified them into quaggan

what about the SHAPE of the chest, can you comment on that? :P

or possibly if the event is currently done often or not (ie, is the event insanely well hidden or rare?)

also, I’d like to point out to people that rotbeard’s reward chest is “trapped” like the one in craze’s folly, opening the small one before he dies locks you out of the large one after :P

Mordremoth seems to be more in “wants to torture everything” department.

And nothing indicates or implies sylvari are dragon minions – not unless you believe the Nightmare Court’s view of what a “true sylvari” is, but thanks to Malyck we know they’re wrong. Mordremoth might be the source of the Nightmare (and thus is the only ED capable of corrupting sylvari) – to our knowledge), but it doesn’t hold a direct tie to sylvari or any tie to the Pale Tree as it stands.

but the nightmare court isn’t being evil for the heck of it, their evil is just a means to an end (that end being cadeyrn having serious ego problems and wanting an explanation that ISN’T a ventari quote)

there’s also the possibility that sylvari are minions of a dragon that just isn’t “evil” like the others, if mordremoth is affected by the dream (and the tablet) like sylvari are, it would likely realize that the other races are more useful to it alive than dead and that seeing what happened to zhaitan, it would probably be a good idea to stay on their good side (now THAT would be a good twist, mordremoth asking the races to stop the nightmare court so it doesn’t get re-corrupted)

Gandalf’s sword, Foecleaver, and most likely his staff are definitely Legendaries.

his staff is just something istari have, there isn’t anything really legendary about them

glamdring/foehammer isn’t innately magical, it’s just a sword that killed a lot of enemies and earned a name, it’s closer to a named exotic than a legendary.

the closest any weapon really gets to being legendary is narsil and that WAS given as a story event

If you think about it: If everyone has it, is it Legendary anymore? No, its just a cool weapon with an effect that tells people around “yeah, I did the storyline quests”

How about this: The one ring to rule them all, you’re saying it wasn’t a legendary item, just because it was looted from a random mob inside a mountain? (And not after fighting some big bad end boss after a long journey. Just a random mob as a sidestop on a longer journey. And nobody even fought the mob, the ring was found on the ground.) Did anyone get any legendary items by defeating Sauron? I do not think so..

actually legolas is specced with legendaries, from his boots too his bow -.- almost everything on him is legendary.
frodo gets a legendary chainmail, cloak, as well as a sword.
etc.

More like Ascended gear imho. His gear isn’t that special. The only legendary items the party has would be Aragorn’s sword and Frodo’s ring tbh. Rest is just rare, exotic, ascended.

soo yer.. they kinda get their stuff as “rewards” for just taking the quest to do the deed.
not to mention the fame and glory and all the treasures etc which they most difinately rescieve afterwards ^^

Still, those rewards are more like from random encounters along the way rather than beating the storyline. And when they started their journey, was there someone telling them that “Oh, you’ll get totally awesome gear if you do this”? No, they got the gear through pure chance.

And no, no treasures afterwards. They returned back to the Shire empty handed and had to deal with scoundrels even then.

the ring is actually one of the least powerfull items in the books, it is only really powerfull in the hands of sauron, on every one else it simply just curropts their souls.

Uhm… the Legendaries aren’t about “power”. They are about uniqueness. That ring is the most legendary item ever in the middle earth. (And full invisibility against regular opponents and prolonged lifespan, how is that not OP? See just how strong Gollum ended up being.)[/quote]
frodo got a jar of light from before the world was made and sam got magical dirt that made all his things grow better.

and you know, they didn’t die horribly to an insane fallen angel, I’d say that’s a pretty nice reward

also, the most legendary items would be the silmarils ((specifically for any who don’t know, some guys called valar made the world, they also made some glowing trees to act as light sources, morgoth, the FIRST dark lord killed the trees with the help of shelobs mother, the last bits of the trees light were stored in three jewels called silmarils, and the fruit and flowers of the trees were made into the sun and moon, turns out the silmarils were REALLY nice looking and a ton of wars and eath and badness occured, and it ended with one of the silmarils in space (one got thrown into the ocean and someone dropped the last one into a really deep pit) where it became a star, whose light was infused into the jar of water frodo got))

if we were talking about some theoretical situation where it was ME getting corrupted, branded, for one thing, they aren’t exactly controlled by krakatorrik, he just owns them (hence being “branded”), they still retain full sentience and free will and carry on normal lives doing whatever they were doing before (risen and icebrood are pretty much mind controlled as well as corrupted, destroyers aren’t sentient and are pretty much elementals on fire), the main difference is they look a lot prettier now, and according to some of the charr in the branded areas, if you don’t destroy every part of a branded, they reform.

You’re a bit wrong here.

They’re called Branded because they’re named after the Dragonbrand (called the Brand for short).

Branded are mindless – except, like for every dragon minion case, the stronger ones that make up the lieutenants and champions. You’re probably getting the misconception that they’re not controlled due to the ogre chieftan in Edge of Destiny, but he’d be fitting one of the champions or lieutenant figures. Whether they retain sentience is actually questionable, but they certainly don’t have free will – not even champions do, for that matter.

Also, it’s risen mooks, not branded ones (at least as far as I know) which go about doing what they were doing when corrupted – that’s why you see risen in Orr mining, farming and so forth when they’re not aggroed.

huh, In which case, bubbles, annoying krait and flooding the world sounds like a blast :P

(again, unless it turns out sylvari are minions, it’s always nice to go with the ones who aren’t evil and are currently winning :P)
(incidentally, if primordus wants to destroy everything, bubbles wants to flood everything, kralkatorrik want to own everything, and zhaitan and jormag want… erm…, would that make mordramoth want to know everything?)

so yeah, keep my mind, gain awesome crystal/chaos/mesmer abilities, become incredibly hard to kill, and are “owned” by a dragon that seeks perfection and is most likely incredibly protective of his “things”

the one downside I can imagine is seeing anything unbranded as hideous monsters that must be destroyed

it would be similar to other RPG’s “superboss” and post game content, completely optional, and for doing something, you are rewarded with something totally not worth the effort, but at the same time, totally worth it

in it we would have to fight ridiculously OP monsters, on insanely difficult quests, to gather bits of a precursor, think of WoW’s legendaries, that should be the sort of thing required to get the precursor, not “kill risen until you get the money” or “kill tuna until one spits up dusk”

Sieran’s a leftover relic back from the day where Sylvari didn’t start out perfect, but actually had some difficulty understanding things like emotions, responsability and feelings.

Back when they were first introduced, they weren’t supposed to be the Mary Sues they are today.

. . . they’re Mary Sues? I thought the Player Character is a Mary Sue. Meets all the hallmarks closest.

yeah, only trahearne and to a lesser extent the player character are mary sues, sylvari as a race are pretty much a race of children thrust into adult bodies, what any other race learns over 18 years or so, a sylvari has to either get given it in the dream, or learn it within about 5 minutes or they get eaten when the termites attack the wardenlight tree again

they never think things through fully (like I mentioned earlier, one wants to go and walk through hostile hylek territory during the day because at night they won’t get to see the hylek)

they have an extreme case of parental abandonment “she has thousands of children now, to the tree you are either firstborn or sylvari”

and their “racial enemy” is a group of BDSM fetishists who like to torture things until they join them (so pretty much planty cenobites) so they can cause enough pain to brainwash the race as a whole

even trahearne doesn’t count as a mary sue, he’s constantly asking for your help, and if you talk to him during the sylvari’s personal story, you can piece together that he is constantly worried about his wyld hunt, and that after all his time in orr, he still has no clue how to complete it (at least ours is, go press 2 at zhaitan) , and that the reason he’s asking you for help so often is that he’s just putting on a brave face for the rest of the pact

the player has a bit of a gameplay excuse in that from the order storyline, the dialog is the same, so they can’t really apply racial or class faults to the character (eg, my charr necro being terrified at the thought of defacing a statue of grenth to get a way of controlling shadows, he should have told sieran to wait up and come back with a chainsaw or something, that’s the sort of stuff he’d be all over)

there’s also that it’s hard for players to be mary sues because if you give them any flaws, it could go completely against how the character could be played, it’s one thing for your character to say he’s afraid of risen, it’s another to have them say it after butchering a horde of them, there’s a good reason silent protagonists are so common, if you give them characterization, it forces either the player to play differently to fit it, or the characterization just makes no sense

The problem with this is that the Clone is still a Clone wielding a Sword. By design, all Clones will attempt to attack with their current weapon, meaning that the Clone will attempt to walk forward and attack with it’s sword.

Yeah. Except there’s anything closer to you than your current target, in which case it’ll happily attack that because of its great “AI”.

that’s because of Anet’s bizarre obsession with keeping their insane targeting system.

also, to be fair, I play a necro with a mesmer as main, it’s a breath of fresh air to play as a mesmer, because at least I know the clones will actually ATTACK the target (and ONLY the target) as opposed to aggroing everything in a 3000 meter range, then running back to you with a manner that just screams “derr, mastar I maed sum fwends look dey wan to play wiv yoo =D”

Each time you disable a trait, you get 5% of each stat + 50 stat points.

For Example:

Necromancer
Death Magic:
5: Reanimator (disabled.)
+5% boon duration, +50 Toughness.

15: Protection of the Horde: (disabled.)
+5% boon duration, +50 Toughness.

before opening this thread I thought “This player is a necro wishing to disable reanimator”

I was not disappointed :P

I love anet’s insane view on reanimator, the conversation with players have gone bit like this:

players: hey ANet, this trait sucks, it lasts no time, only triggers when the battle is over, does no damage, half the time it aggros additional enemies resulting in us getting killed, and the other half it doesn’t do anything at all! not only that, any necro wanting to use a staff is forced to get it, even if they aren’t minionmancer, please can you remove it?

ANet: ok fine, the minion now lasts double the time

(the minion then proceeds to aggro ALL the things then do nothing about the mess it’s got its maseter into)

players: FOR THE LOVE OF GRENTH ANET JUST GET RID OF THE THING! NOBODY WANTS IT!

ANet: ok, we’ll make it aggro enemies less, happy now?

(minion proceeds to be even LESS useful in battle)

players: GAH!

seriously ANet, just get rid of the thing, make it something like “your marks summon a jagged horror to attack the enemy that triggered it” so we can at least control it better >_<
(and them make protection of the horde “your reapers mark summons a jagged horror to attack all enemies affected”)

I’m not inclined to believe it was a result of impulsiveness since she had to have had some instinct of self preservation. Children are generally impulsive and they won’t charge at a growling bear.

most likely, her thought process was “I’ll lie to the player to let me go, act as a distraction, then portal or fly away, perfect plan!” she just didn’t anticipate the amount of risen she’d be distracting and it led to her death

^ This makes a bit more sense. Still leaves a bit of a hole since she could’ve just told the player such a plan, and there’s no reason your character would really protest that. If anything, it makes more sense to leave a distraction than to fight to the death, since she would probably get killed much quicker in a head-to-head fight. Just the idea of her accepting that her own death in that battle was the only way out baffled me. Trickery gone wrong would have made much more sense.

put simply, it always seemed to me that her main character flaws were recklessness, inability to learn from her mistakes, and never telling the full story until during/after the fact (the last one affects quite a lot of the priory actually)

she was reckless in charging in, was so fast in deciding that she forgot to tell anyone what she was planning, and in the end, she died because one of her defining traits (inability to learn from mistakes) was in full force that day.

the fact is, no matter what she said, she HADN’T learned anything from you, she was blind to the consequences of running in and that got her killed, if she really had learned to overcome her character flaws, she would have thought for a minute and realized that rushing in would get her killed, and tried something else.

for forgal, his death was to end his legend (due to norn having a racial attraction to committing suicide in new and impressive ways)
for tybalt it was that you helped ease his regrets about not helping fight the dragons (and in the end, he goes out, literally fighting a dragon, not bad for a coward, eh?)
for sieran it was that she just never learned and was punished for that (actually, if you think about it, sieran geting punished for not learning is a running theme as well, it’s just played for laughs until claw island)

on a much more meta level perhaps the reason for sieran’s death wasn’t because you helped her learn something, perhaps the reason she died was to teach the player character that innocence and naivety against the dragons will get you killed

in fact, other than forgal, since I haven’t played the vigil line, the mentors seem to go out in an oddly appropriate way, the cowardly spy goes out fighting directly against enemies, and the scholar that just never learned ended up teaching the player a lesson about recklessness

Woo, you can help players cheat through jumping puzzles.

Woo, you can move an entire squad behind enemy defenses without them noticing.

Wooooo~

Yes, that is a fair trade-off. Get over it.

uh-huh, so in other words, we’re to be punished solo for being useful in incredibly specific circumstances in groups?

often at times when the punishment doesn’t make sense, why should I be made slow in PvE when I don’t play WvW?

why should a class be balanced around the ability to help others in completely optional, completely irrelevant areas?

portal’s usefulness in PvE is minimal at best, even less now that PvPer whining got it nerfed to have a max range and use cap

not sure how many others feel this way, but I’d trade the ability for my portals to be used by others in PvE for a movement speed signet in PvE ANYDAY

I played every profession (some more than others, mesmer is main and AWESOME) and I am think no class should have a 25% speed signet except thieves, because they are THIEVES. In every rpg thieves are the fast class with high damage but low health/armor.

The mesmer especially doesn’t need a speed signet. We have blink and portal, we have veil and mass invisibility, we have time warp, we have iDefender, we have already very good signets and now you want a speed signet too?

veil and mass invis are AWFUL outside PvP, iDefender is one of our worst phantasms outside of PvP, and our signets? don’t make me laugh, more clone health? (wow, 2 hits instead of one) spammed by boons that are of no use outside combat? increased boon duration?

in case you didn’t realize, this thread is about movement from point A to point B outside of PvP, this isn’t about kiting, gap closing or escape, it’s purely about getting where you want to go faster than the pace of a crippled snail

oh, and if you want to talk about class design, the necromancer, the class that is designed around “it may not be fast, but you WILL die” gets faster movement speed than the class based around being difficult to locate and track down?

We have probably the highest in-combat mobility and if you want to run fast outside of combat, run in a group. If there is a warrior or a guardian (or both) you can use focus (temporal curtain) and they can use their shouts/weapons skills for group perma-swiftness.

ah, so what your solution to moving faster is is “go with classes that can move faster”
NO other class needs to be forced to use a weapon or rune setup for reliable swiftness other than a mesmer, we may be fast in combat, but combat isn’t when you need swiftness

gixx alludes to it in the next quest “I always wanted her to learn responsibility, but not like this…”

if anything, it’s even more fitting for her than tybalt.

from what gixx mentions, she’s always been impulsive, reckless, and never thinks the consequences of her actions through, and it’s implied she’s been like this a long time and never really learned her lesson.

“I’m to take you to the priory, but let’s have some fun first!”
“I know, let’s desecrate a statue of the god of death, that can’t possibly go wrong!”
“so if it works, we have a perfect containment device, if not we get lost in shadow for eternity… WHEEEEE!”
“hey norn guy, give us the sword or my friend will beat you up!”

then claw island happens, and they are swarmed by undead, once again, not considering the consequences, she sacrifices herself needlessly (as opposed to just shutting the gate and making a run for it)

we as players think “wait what? that was pointless, why did she do that?” but it’s completely in character for someone who just rushes into things, especially one who is also a sylvari, a race that often does stupid things because it seems fun (“I’m just a bit worried about the hylek is all… why don’t we go at night?” “but then we’ll only get to see sleeping hylek, how boring…”)

most likely, her thought process was “I’ll lie to the player to let me go, act as a distraction, then portal or fly away, perfect plan!” she just didn’t anticipate the amount of risen she’d be distracting and it led to her death

as for the thing she told the player, it was probably just her repeating things gixx has yelled at her at some point, you could easily imagine gixx saying something along the lines of "SIERAN YOU <plant based insult involving stupidity>, I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW <negative quality she mentions posessing> YOU ARE, WHEN WILL YOU LEARN SOME <positive quality the player “taught” her>!?!"

I wonder, we’ve been told that it is an open world event with a large chest, it’s unlikely to be an orr temple, a starter meta event or a dragon due to all of them being farmed like crazy all the time

one thing that people always forget to mention:

What about Arah?

the event to take arah rarely occurs because of it’s insanely farmable nature and the fact that it’s the event to keep a dungeon open, leading to it being failed very rarely.

the thing is, the arah chain ALSO has a large chest, it’s just insanely difficult to ever see it because the chances of failing is so small, we never need to retake arah, leading to the chest being relatively unfarmed

my theory is this:

Final rest drops from the large chest at the end of the opening of Arah, however, as the event rarely happens due to not failing to defend, it leaves it as the only open world boss chest that has not yet been insanely farmed

the problem comes where if this turns out to be true, we need to convince people to not take advantage of 5 mins of ludicrous amounts of risen infinitely respawning, and block off access to arah, so we can farm the chest that may or may not contain a small chance of getting final rest.

the reason it’s rare is that the boss is nigh undefeatable, the boss… is our own greed!

so yeah, any servers volunteer to continually lose arah to farm the opening event chest?

Please stop killing everyone

tegwen and carrys were my favorite charackters.
i had them with me since my early story, as carys saved tegwen from the krait, as we found the mirror and made it through orr and back, they helped on clawisland, they joined with their sylvari special-unit to help the pact, they helped again with the mirror for the eye, the pale reavers run with me through half of orr just for tegwens self-sacrifice in the end... carys made it through...
and trahearne doesnt even lost a good word about tegwen as she died... but went to hoelbrak for a ritual for a norn (apatia?) for which i had no sympathy in that short part of a story.

ive have been through all of this with those two in my story and this is why i miss this vegetable more than sieran, but she was unique too.
i wish there would have been a storyquest about saying goodbye to a sylvarifriend.
argh, im so glad that they have not taken away carys in the end …

it especially sucks if you choose act with wisdom, for your racial, and the priory for your order because no matter what, someone you know dies

spoilers from this point:

if you choose the vigil plan, tegwen dies, a character you’ve shared a good portion of the adventure with, slightly less than trahearne in fact.

if you choose the priory plan, kekt dies, the asura who helps you in the first priory mission as a sylvari, and appears frequently throught the priory storylines.

finally if you choose the whispers plan, agent zott dies, the asura who you meet when taking claw island back, and the boyfriend of the projectionist who helps you in that line, and also appears as the pit announcer in the whispers sylvari quest to trick waine.

it’s possibly the most sadistic choice (for the player, not the player character) you have to make in ANY sequence of personal story choices possible, no matter who you pick, someone you’ve met and befriended before dies

Hey guys, after seeing hte conspiracy theory about how the boss/chest isn’t dropping the “correct loot table” i went and asked Mr. Vaughn about it. Here was his reply.

“No, I traced it back from the item all the way back to the encounter, and it’s all hooked up. The chance of it dropping is extremely low.”

So we could have already found the place and it just hasn’t dropped.

Well, who’s got a Decoder ring from a Cracker Jacks box? Is there depth to the " I traced it back from the item all the way back to the encounter"? what might it hint at? A long event? or merely the code screen containing the Event has pages of details and had to page down/up many times to get from beginning to end?

he probably just means he looked at the staff, then the loot table it drops from, then the things that use that table (the chest), then the boss that spawns that chest, then the event that spawns the boss.

he’s basically saying “I checked to make sure that there are no breaks in the chain of event > boss > chest > loot table > loot, leading to the possibility of final rest”
