You can get 55 laurels every 28 days. You will eventually come to a point like all of us where you have no other use for them other than to convert them to gold. Doing achievements also nets you laurels although it’s not really worth actively doing.
The problem with that is do the math on getting enough for all the ascended recipes you want to make for your alts and a set of ascended jewelry for each alt – let’s say the alt number is 8 (one of each class, which is common). That is too long a time to reasonably gear up for these items.
Let’s say you throw out ascended recipes altogether. That’s still too slowly to reasonably gear up each character with 5 trinkets each.
The old method was 1 day completing dailies, and 10 a month completing monthlies. That’s 41 max, so you’re still better off in the current format.
The argument isn’t that you don’t get more now than before. We all get that you do. The point is it’s still too slow a rate to reasonably gear up multiple characters with trinkets, to say nothing of ascended recipes for each of the armor weights – more than that unless you use the same stats on all your alts.
I honestly don’t see the problem. There is no reason at all to change your gear. Just save up laurels, which are easy to accumulate, and buy new jewelry. If you’ve been spending them on T6 mats consistently, then maybe it’s not easier, but I tend to suspect it still is.
Laurel accumulation is very slow when you’re talking about getting 5 ascended trinkets for each of 8 characters.

I think OP meant all the events occurring in the map instance you are in should appear on the world map instead of flashing the “nearest” event to the player.
nooo!

Speaking of events, this might explain a few things…
My maps never ever look like that. None of them.
Well, I don’t know the numbers, of course, but some guilds are busier now than they were before the HoT announcement. My guild, for instance, is busier than ever because we all have things we want to do before all the new content arrives.
We have alts we want to finish up, skill challenges we want to go and get done now, crafting we want to max out, legendary items and gold we want to save up, etc. So, at least some of us are glad of the “break” so we can prepare our accounts and alts for the shiny new content.
I agree with the laurels acquisition rate. It would be really nice if there was an in-game way to earn laurels other than log-in rewards. The rate with this is just painfully slow.
Southsun Cove doesn’t have any skill challenges, and what they’re saying is, if the skill challenges aren’t part of the world completion list, will they count? We don’t know yet, but skill challenges in DT and SW do not count toward overall world completion.
There is also the skill point that is locked behind the Covington event.
You don’t need to do the Taidha Covington event to get the skill point. I never do the event and get the skill point every time, same as I do for the FR one. I never do the event. I just skip it and get the skill point.
Using Hero Points obtained from leveling and doing skill challenges.
Well, all MMOs change over time and this one is no different. They are fixing things that they essentially “broke” like the trait system and the personal story, so they get that some things they changed were a mistake, but I can’t see them changing what they’re doing overall. For most players, things seem to be working alright.
Not really. They’ve pretty much already said that traits will be earned by leveling and doing skill challenges. That is a very doable system for me.
But but this is how HoT will be.
I’m really hoping that HoT isn’t going to be one big SW grind rotation…
They must have felt as though not enough players were cramming themselves into SW.
Is it really all that different now?
I’m sure you’re not the only one. I’ve seen people saying they dislike it, so the sentiment is out there. I like it myself, but there really isn’t all that much of it overall.
As far as we know, we only need 465 hero points to get everything you can get with them, so any skill points beyond this would be pointless.
And it doesn’t look like any skill points will be converted to Hero Points since they are based on your character’s level and the number of skill challenges you have done on the maps.
The Order story line begins at level 30.
The new currency will be spent on Mystic Forge crafting items.
You can’t switch your Order once you choose one.
They stopped stacking after they subtlely changed the tooltip wording on certain items.
I don’t think chest farming or taxi’ing should be allowed to still work. They need to be changed to discourage this unfriendly and harassing behavior.
Taxi-ing players into a map isn’t usually a bad thing. A lot of times (most of the time in my experience) people do this to fill up the map and make it more likely, not less, that events will get done and we’ll get all the way to a breach.
Is there a good example of a currently running MMO that manages to keep people busy and let them get their skins and gear in a non-repetitive, non-grindy way?
If farming for the portal is driving you crazy, then take a break. Come back to it in a few days or something. Like others have said, it’s an RNG thing. Some will get a key the first time they kill a mob in DT & SW, and some won’t get one even if they farm for the entire 2 weeks.
People are buying these mini’s just to troll those of us that hate them.
I very seriously doubt this, but I’m all for some sort of sound modifier for other peoples’ noise.
I wonder, is everyone going to need to throw away their ascended gear and start over with exotic combinations due to the stat changes coming?
Why am I still paying/grinding every time I want some decent/new/change.
Skins are basically how this game makes its money. Since it’s popular to chase them, they make it time-consuming and pricey to get them. They hope it’ll keep people playing since there’s no actual progression to the game.
As a B2P, they’ve got to make money with their store since they have no income from monthly subs. At least their store is less essential to actual gameplay than many others where you feel like you can’t hardly do anything without buying something.
I’m guessing that most players would just be annoyed by even more RNG in a game that is already drowning in it.
The Chaos weapons are selling for really good money overall, if anyone has tickets to buy them. Good way to make some gold if you’re looking to do that.
So, since this thread is a year old, that prolly means this problem has been fixed already, right?
I’d probably do dungeons at 30 with a guild since most people PUGing will expect all players for a given dungeon to be level 80.
I knew the drop rate was going to be low. Mostly, I’m out in SW for other reasons. Having a chance to get something rare is just an additional reason to kill something rather than running past it.
I like the way it looks on a male much more than it looks on a female. Kind of lackluster in design, imo, for them.
Yeah, I wish the fees weren’t so high in this game’s TP. Just feels outrageous compared to the auction house fees of other games.
Most MMOs lock desirable rewards (skins, armor, minis, weapons, etc.) behind activities that are both time-consuming and repetitive. This is how they keep people “busy” and they all do it. For most people, time-consuming and repetitive equals grind. In this particular game, making money is not as easy as in many other games, so even earning gold to buy what you want can feel like a grind.
Used to irritate me until I accepted that all MMOs are the same in this. They simply have different styles of implementing their grind.
Is there some ridiculous lock-out mechanism on harvesting materials? I had some old logging axes I needed to use up, and after I’d harvested a certain number of trees, all the wood harvesting nodes on every map disappeared. It doesn’t matter if I switch zones or anything. All the tree nodes are gone.
How long, exactly, does this penalty last? How many days? Weeks? I’d like to finish using those axes.
It would be nice if they’d do a little article about the details on acquiring a guild hall.
I don’t think we get one every week, but it makes sense that there would be a patch of some sort to add these drops to the game.
And when they DO patch, it’s usually a Tuesday, right?
It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but look how Disney did Beauty and the Beast. Despite that beast started off as human, but even with the curse Belle still accepted him. Later on in the movie we witness the friendship between the two blossoming into a relationship.
Okay, yeah, the Beauty and the Beast theme seems similar. I guess I was trying to view it in a more realistic light than a Disney cartoon, but we are talking fantasy here. Although, I always knew the Beast would become human again, which made their romance more realistic to me. I tend to think that concerns about “fitting” together, as it were, in a physical way, especially, would be an issue for anyone looking for a real relationship.
Oh, really? Yet you stated more recently that you weren’t going to “spell it all out”, naturally implying that you had not already done so.
I meant, spell it all out more than I already did. I thought that was what I was implying.
And yeah, the actual evidence (dialogue and actions as written and presented by the writers in the story) is much more supportive of the examples I gave regarding their friendship than it is of romance.
Yeah, that and geodes. Or at least give us a slot in collections for them. That would help, too. And if a currency, then also please add a way to spend them one at a time, so we can actually use them all up and not have them forever.
If any relationship that can be done right as of now would be Rox and Braham.
Yeah, but I have my doubts about the feasibility of a romance between two races that are so different. Charr/Norn – I mean, charr have all those teeth; a kiss with a Norn would be really awkward, if even possible. Charr have all that fur vs. smooth skin. And, um, not sure if they could actually, you know, really get it on comfortably, again due to all the differences in physique. Also, is there any evidence Norn consider Charr to be physically or sexually attractive?
Friendship is obviously doable, but anything romantic? I have my doubts.
Especially when they suggest they can offer compelling “evidence” but then, of course, don’t actually do so.
lol I did, actually, in my original explanation.
I never could figure why they haven’t added more giants to the game. Like it would be any big deal if we could kill more than one giant in a given zone regularly.
Its really, really important to note that we cannot pass judgement on these things until the final product is released.
Yeah, I agree we won’t know for sure about everything and how it works before it actually comes out. I’m just a little worried from what we do know so far.
It would be nice to have the original animations again. I didn’t know why they removed them. The female screenshots are fabulous, BTW.
shrugs It’s not really about what I want or anyone else wants or interpretations/assumptions but about what there’s actual evidence for. That’s what I’m saying.
You sound angry. lol No offense intended. This is just one of those silly, fun discussions about fiction.
I’m looking forward to HoT, but I think it remains to be seen whether or not their expansion is going to keep everyone busy on par with the expansions of other games. Especially if they offer less content area than what most consider an amount appropriate for a true expansion.
It almost looks like GW2’s expansion will be more in keeping with small content updates of other games with the exception of a couple of things. Adding a new class feels very “expansion-y” and they’re trying to make the old classes feel fresh with elite specializations, but again, how good are these specializations?
If everyone decides that those lines are worse than what was originally introduced and no one uses them long-term, then that is a ton of their expansion content out the window.
And no evidence they aren’t.
There’s actually a lot of evidence that they aren’t, but I think we’re a touch off-topic here, so I won’t spell it all out.
3 seems kind of ridiculous for an actual expansion. Expansions normally involve a significant addition of map content. That’s kind of the point, after all. We’ve finished with the previous locations and want new ones to keep us busy.
In LOTRO, for instance, an update that is a fraction of the cost of a real expansion introduces 1-3 new zones of content.
