If scarcity is such a problem huge deal should have done something about the tens of thousands of exotics people created using the mystic forge exploit and the hundreds of thousands of exotics people farmed from the labyrinth.

Leaving those items in the economy has allowed RMT companies to take control of the entire trading post because they suffered no repercussions from mass generating these items to earn thousands of gold and controlling the prices on these items to make even more profit.

Let the uber players have the uber skins. How awesome would that skin be if everyone had it? Or if it was available on the cash shop? It would be cool for a day or two, then become “just another skin everyone has”.

I’ve been a level 80 since a week or so after launch and I still haven’t even come close to getting a legendary. When I see them, I admire them. Maybe one day I’ll work towards getting one. That’ll give me a goal for a few days or weeks.

6 months from now, the people that did the work and run around with sick Halloween skins will be proud that they have them. You’re right, it’s the GW2 1%, good for them. If everyone had the best stuff, the best stuff would just seem like junk.

The best / coolest looking items in the game shouldn’t have a 50% drop rate. No matter how much I wish I could have them. It really is for the 1%, that’s OK. That adds prestige to the items.

There are no “uber players” just lucky players.

You can spend hundreds of hours farming and maybe get a few dozen gold, or you can just get 1 lucky drop and get enough money to make a legendary in 1 day.

Having unique rewards from holiday events be completely dependent on winning the RNG is horrible game design.

Rift did all their events perfectly, as long as you participated in the event you could pick up most or all of the unique rewards from the event.

Just by doing holiday events you would collect tokens that you could turn in for most of the event rewards. And there were special tokens that you could only get once per day, and if you got enough of them you could get the best unique rewards, usually a mount.

No RNG lottery involved.

The biggest difference? Nobody complained about the event rewards in rift. If you look at the rift forums for threads about the events there are sometimes complaints that some of the puzzles or quests are too vague and that’s it. You don’t see anyone complain that a skin is too hard to get when you need to get 5000 event tokens from it and special events only give you 10-15 tokens each, because it still means if you really want something you can earn it. And guess what? These skins were still extremely rare because they were really hard to earn. The key is that nobody trying to earn them got slapped in the face by RNG.

If every dungeon was as profitable as Ascalon Catacombs that would give me enough incentive to keep running them. Though I don’t have all the skins I want yet(especially for my alts!), getting money is more important to me than getting skins for the time being.

The big downside to making money from dungeons is that you need a consistent team of 5 people that work together well, and that’s not always possible.

@Azoetia

“voting with your wallet” doesn’t really apply with it comes to real money stores in MMOs.

There are people who play thousands of dollars each month in Maple Story just to get a tiny stat bonus(literally less than 1%) because of anomaly with paid stat resets.

Even if most people think it’s stupid to pay $1000 to do 0.5% more damage and never spend that kind of money on the game, the people who do pay for it will keep doing it forever and that’s how Nexon is such a successful company.

The real question is how many people really want Guild Wars to be that kind of game?

@ the people bashing “gamblers”

There is a flaw with your logic to the point of being down right kitten. In any form of gambling you are given odds of success either thru posted odds or long documented history. This is a short event so the long documented history goes out the window. That leaves posted odds. This game didn’t have posted odds and being a short event it was safe to assume that chests would have fairly decent odds of dropping a skin. This has proven to NOT be the case. Clearly it was a money grab by anet. That’s fine as its a business. However by not posting the odds and charging RL money for the keys they created a serious violation of trust on behalf of their players and IMO was very deceptive. When RL money is involved….Anet needs to start posting odds for success on every rng item purchased via the store.

This combined with the insanely priced crafted skins , again supposedly for a “fun” event, has left a bad taste in people’s mouths.

Anet needs to relax with the mney grabbing and realize if they provide FAIR prices and ODDS then people will be more than happy to spend RL money with them….if they feel they aren’t being cheated.

Didn’t the Halloween page before Phase 1 came out say there would be 1 skin per 5 chests? That’s what someone told me it said after the price for black lion chests jumped up to 70+ copper per chest. But I just looked and don’t see anything like that.

I spent more money on keys than I spent on the game and all I got was a bunch of boosters

I don’t really care. I had money to spare so I was happy to give it to arenanet for a small chance to get something pretty.
I knew when I spent the money that there would be a chance that I would get absolutely nothing but I still decided to spend it.

But I do thing it’s bad game design that the single best way to make money in this whole game is like winning the lottery. You can play the game for hundreds of hours and only get a few scraps.

OR you can just open one black lion chest, get a pretty greatsword skin, and instantly make 3 times the amount of gold that the person grinding for 500 hours did.

It would be much better if things that are the result of winning a really unbalanced lottery should not be tradable at all.

Cerise.9045

I was playing WvW for the past couple of hours and noticed that as time went on, there were less and less people on the map.

Without there being any fighting anywhere on the map, we had maybe 30-40 people active. Since our waypoint was at our spawn when entering the map it was pretty obvious that we were being vastly outnumbered by the other servers. Strangely though, my guild members as well as other people playing with us reported 3 to 4 hour queues.

After a few hours I decided to take a break from WvW to get something to eat, when I logged back into the game I took a look at the WvW gates in LA and saw at least 50 people standing at the gates trying to get in. Asking around people reported being in queue for several hours as well.

I tried to queue myself and it actually popped for me after only 45 minutes, but when I tried to enter it gave me a pop up message saying that WvW servers are down in preparation for a patch and it took me out of the queue.

So according to my guild we now have about 10 people on the map we’re on in WvW and it’s impossible for anyone else to get in. Meanwhile both of the servers we’re facing still have 150+ people on the map.

I hope that whatever is causing this bug is fixed very quickly.

Are rangers in really as bad of shape as they're being made out to be?

Cerise.9045

Well if you think rangers are bad try an elementalist, sure great for aoe damage in world PvP but get owned by EVERY class 1v1 in world PvP.

For instance just last night in 1v1 world Pvp I was chased by a Ranger with his bear, I tried to turn around and attack him at one stage but realised there is no way I could win, so continued to try to flee; with lack of adequate speed buffs I ended up dying.

This concluded to me, elementalists are badly broken seeing they are uable to kill 1v1 (world PvP) specific.

By the way, I am full toughness, heal and power spec with full exotics…..

SO go figure; just saying your class appears fine to me….

This is basically why im giving up playing gw2

Hope all works out anyways, and you guys are satisified with your Rangers class.

Arch

If you want to be a good player you have to play a class to its strengths.

The strength of the elementalist is all about positioning, elementalists are one of the best classes in WvW if positioned right. And one of the worst classes if positioned wrong like getting stuck in a 1v1.

To be effective as an ele you need to position yourself so you don’t get in 1v1 fights. Use walls and other players to keep yourself safe while you hit enemies with 5k+ with meteor shower and chain lightning.

The problem with rangers is that they don’t have any real strengths to play to.

Are rangers in really as bad of shape as they're being made out to be?

in Ranger

Cerise.9045

Any role that rangers are able to fill in PvP is better filled by another class.

There isn’t really anything they can do that makes them worth using instead of another class when they other classes can do the same thing but better.

Most of this is due to pets being too unreliable, in PvP if you’re in a fight and they hit your target once it’s probably because the person you’re fighting is AFK or stupid and would have been dead already if you were playing a different class.

I was running a BM heavy build since launch but recently took all the points out of BM and put them somewhere else and put my pet on passive mode. This actually made my ranger more effective in PvP, the 2 seconds of quickness every 20 seconds is the only useful thing the pet contributes to the ranger and putting it on passive helps avoid the 60 second cooldown from dying.

Having the ranger pet not attack anything is making my ranger perform better.
Go figure.

I’m trying to figure out what unique benefit a Ranger brings to WvW. Right now anything a Ranger can do, other classes can do better, and most other classes also have a unique benefit that no other class can do at all. (guardian walls, mesmer portals, warrior shouts, etc)

The unique benefit for Rangers used to be Spirit skills. Unfortunately these were nerfed and don’t provide a noticeable benefit to your team in WvW anymore. With Spirits nerfed all rangers have left going for them is dead pets.

I was making a list of why you want people to play a certain class in WvW. Listing what benefits they bring to WvW which other classes can’t provide, but I can’t come up with anything for Rangers that other classes can’t do better. When theory crafting the only thing I can bring up is having 1500 range, but in practice this isn’t too helpful as longbow projectiles move way too slowly so they don’t hit moving targets most of the time.

Anecdotes can’t cover the “significant numbers” part of my question, since with a couple million players, even hundreds would only be about 0.01%, which isn’t what I’d generally consider “significant”. (Nor, I suspect, would a problem that led some hundredths of a percent of players to quit be enough to move an issue right to the top of ANet’s priority list.)

After you get the data for a few thousand attempts you can get a pretty good estimate for what the chance to get a base weapon per attempt is.

The problem is all data is biased unless you record several thousand attempts at a time. Because if I do 500 attempts and get 1 base weapon and them submit the data, then do another 500 attempts and get 0 base weapon and don’t submit the data, it makes it look like 1 in 500 instead of 1 in 1000

I only throw in exotics trying to get the base weapons anymore.

This requires a large starting capital to absorb bad luck streaks, but it’s way more profitable in the end.

I value random exotics at 2g(on average you get a bit less from them but making a small loss is ok)
From my data I’m getting 1 exotic for every 9 tries on average, that’s 28 rares, means you need rares for around 7 silver if you want to break even on getting exotics unless you hit the jackpot.

As for exotics the odds to get the base weapons seems to vary a lot per weapon type but as a rough estimate I would say about on in 25-30 attempts nets a base weapon so the average money spent on cheap exotics to before a base weapon is about 50 gold. I made a list of exotics that I can consistently get buy orders filled on so I have some good attempts at a base weapon each day.

Any idea roughly which you used more of?

Also, that’s a lot of dusk. I wonder if that’s actually got a higher chance than dawn, or you were just lucky (or unlucky, whichever).

I just bought all the rares and exotics off the trading post that were available, then if I got more exotics from the rares I used them.

All 5 greatsword bases came from a combination of 4 exotics gotten from other exotics or rares. There is a chance to get a base weapon right away from 4 rares but it’s one in a gazillion and I’ve never had it happen to me personally.

How can crafting be made profitable?

in Crafting

Posted by: Cerise.9045

Cerise.9045

Lots of ways

1. Make gathering a profession. Right now everyone is a crafted, make crafted items less valuable.

2. Add a cool down on certain rare crafts. For example only 1 imbued orichalcum inscription can be made per day. Since everything can be crafted infinitely, crafted items go down to the material price.

3. Add hard to get recipes that are unqiue. Right now all the expensive/hard to get recipes are for bulk items, which are only a convenience not a special item you can’t get any other way. Since you can get recipes for non-bulk items for almost free and no effort, there is no added value to having a certain recipe, everyone has easy access to all recipes keeping prices low.

4. Add some better profession specific consumables. Most consumables are worthless and are stuck at vendor price or ingredient price.

Since skill crystals/scrolls/whatever are soulbound, “crafting” done with the mystic forge is actually profitable, this could also be applied to regular crafting.

I don’t really understand the reason for not having DR in the mystic forge.

Take for example large scales into armored scales. Putting in 50 large scales nets 5-16 armored scale. For me the average has been about 10 per conversion if I only count the first 20 conversion of the day. If I do the conversion 30 more times right afterwards, it drops down to an average of 6. This means that even though on average 10 armored scales are created from the conversion for most people, people who, lets say, do 100 conversions end up with an average of 6.8 armored scales. This means that for someone doing a large amount of conversions every attempt took 3.2 armored on scales out of the economy. This goes along with the goal to prevent too many items from entering the economy and piling up over time.

Unless we know exactly what the loot lists look like(which will never happen) it will be impossible to pinpoint exactly where loot gets effected.

Remember a dev posting a while ago that an anomaly with the loot lists caused the GS base weapons and dagger base weapons to be far too common because of the way the loot lists were set up, but since the other weapons had their loot lists set up differently they were affected to a different degree.

Since we have no idea what the loot list for the mystic clovers looks like we have no idea if they are affected by DR or not. For all we know clovers themselves could be the “worst” result in terms of the list, which would mean even if other items get their chance for a successful roll reduced to 0% clovers would still be a possible result.

We do know that for transmuting items and for rerolling equipment there is a list where good results are at the top and have a low chance and bad results are at the bottom and we get those when the results at the top fail their dice roll. When DR kicks in the top results get their chances reduced to 0% meaning they always fail their dice roll, and then it keeps going down the list like normal until we get a successful dice roll on an item with more than a 0% chance.

If many people have done this and everyone has gotten the same result this is worth considering, although it’s still directly in contradiction to what the developers have said.

However, you haven’t really presented any evidence for your claim that this DR effect applies to every type of conversion.

When are you claiming that this DR came into effect? I converted ~800 batches of sigils a few days ago and I didn’t see any evidence of DR.

Several members of my guild who were making money through sigil conversion reported that they stopped getting higher tier sigils after enough attempts. I didn’t do any testing on this myself though.
I finished my clovers before the mystic forge patch so I can’t get any data on those, but they use a different kind of lookup table to determine the results, mystic clovers probably aren’t at the top of the table, so even if there’s a wall that blocks you from getting “better” results after a certain threshold, it would still be possible to get them even if they’re lower on the list.

Before the patch I got a lot base weapons by simply throwing in a lot of level 80 rares that I bought for cheap off the trading post.

After the patch this isn’t really possible anymore because of the DR. I only got 2 base weapons after the patch because of this. I got both of them through a combination of buying exotics from the trading post, crafting exotics when the materials are cheap, and using the mystic forge to forge exotics from rares(only works a few times before DR hits). After this I wait at least 24 hours for the DR to clear up and then I throw the rares in the forge in batches of 36, I feel like this is a safe enough number before the DR kicks in but gets me through all my exotics at roughly the same pace I’m getting them each day. If you’re using the forge to try to get the base weapon, don’t use it to turn rares into exotics on the same day, always keep 1 day minimum between doing these 2 things.

Before the patch I focused only on dawn and dusk and got a good amount of each because I could throw an unlimited amount of rares/exotics into the forge each day without worrying about DR. Now that I have to limit myself so much I’ve only gotten a The Lover and The Legend. I already sold them unfortunately. I’m currently trying to get The Hunter, I can’t do any more attempts today because I’ve already hit the DR on the forge, but I’ll record my attempts tomorrow and upload them to youtube if I get it.

Despite claims from an arenanet game designer posting on the forum, the mystic forge is indeed suffering from (unintended?) diminishing returns.

Since the game designer in question claimed that the mystic forge is not intended to suffer from diminishing returns, this has to be a bug of some kind in the game programming.

Large scale testing has shown this bug is easily reproducible.

All you need to do is stock up on a few stacks of T5 fine crafting materials and T5 dust, and have some spare skillpoints.

Put the T5 fine material, the same material of T6, dust, and philosophers stones in the mystic forge, and confirm you want to forge them.

Now repeat this process 20 times.
You will notice a clear downward pattern in the return of T6 fine materials, until you eventually no longer get more than the bare minimum possible crafting materials from the conversion.

Now get 50 of your friends or guild mates to test this as well. They will all get exactly the same results.

This doesn’t only apply to fine crafting materials, it applies to EVERYTHING that involves a random element in the mystic forge. Including making exotics using rare equipment, or using exotic weapons to make a legendary base weapon. everything is affected by these diminishing returns

The hard becomes impossible (legendarys, and economic hardship)

He’s probably referring to the thing on guru that links to dev posts on this forum, to be more specific the sticky about this on the crafting board.

Also DR isn’t as bad now, but it still shouldn’t be there in the first place. Namely because bots aren’t even affected by it in the first place, and if they were all they could spend it on is gathering tools.

Still hit DR in 20-25 minutes, but it only takes away a little bit of karma, taking a 5 minute break letkitteno another 20-25 minutes without DR., meaning I’m getting karma at about 90% of what I was before the DR.

This isn’t that bad, but really the DR should never have been there in the first place.

What are bots going to do with the karma anyway? Buy mining tools? oh noooooo

Would you support a total reset?

No.

I played out my first week of release weeks in advance. I stocked up on meals and adjusted my sleep schedule and pushed myself to the limit to minmax my playtime every day.

I’m not going through that again, nor do I want to go through that again at a slower pace.
