BG was a real class act how they handled this matchup. Looking at the score one might wonder why SoS and FA liked this matchup; but it was in the way they played and didn’t feel the need for waypointing enemy keeps in EB; no spawncamping, none of that crap so many servers feel the need to engage in.

Simple way to fix stale Tier matchups

in WvW

Posted by: Chris.3290

Chris.3290

I agree Glicko sucks. But I think 1U1D would suck too. I may be being selfish because my tier is the best its been in a long time.

But anyway lets see. Lets project out the next few weeks results of a 1U1D system. (Since I’m NA I’ll only do that). The 8/28 match is based on the current match results staying as they are right now.

8/28
BG/JQ/YB | TC/SoS/SBI | FA/Mag/HoD | CD/Ebay/DB | NSP/DH/SoR | BP/AR/SF
Kain/GoM/FC | IoJ/ET/DR

9/4
BG/JQ/TC | YB/XXX/XXX | XXX/XXX/CD | HoD/XXX/NSP

Hmmm. This is more difficult and interesting than I thought it would be. I found I couldn’t really pick the Sept. 4th week after the initial 1u1d. And I absolutely couldn’t go past the T4 match because I don’t know the servers beyond that since I’m in T3.

Questions/Difficulty Predicting:

In a TC/SoS/SBI match, could SBI come in second? I personally dont’ think so due to SoS Ocx population.

FA/Mag/HoD: Could Mag beat FA? I really don’t know. Is FA just sleeping or has their population really dropped?

CD/Ebay/DB: Could DB beat Ebay for second?

Also, feel free to add the lower tier matches if you play there and know how it could turn out.

Perhaps a program running with the matchmaking code where glicko is overridden if a server gets first 3 weeks in a row, while a server in the next tier up gets last 3 weeks in a row; they swap places.

This would have 2 immediate and positive effects.

A. It will allow the system to respond to major population shifts more quickly; where glicko can take months to correct.

B. If a server is happy in it’s tier but does not want to move up; they will be less encouraged to keep racking up the score and killing enjoyment for their enemies.

Two cons of course:

1. playing for 2nd among the 2nd and 3rd servers would be brutal and raise acrimony

2. 2v1’s or 1v0’s (2 servers sitting out) to move a server out of the tier would become more common.

As the only server in the exclusive Gold League that is not Full and do not expect to be any time soon, this is an amazing growth opportunity and challenge.
PuGmanders and guilds that pin in public channels in particular will find a friendly community that is full of experienced and skillful players that are eager for good scraps against numerous enemies who are typically not that skillful.

World Population Changes Are Coming

Chris.3290

On YB we have a huge NA, with far less offhours coverage. Now we won’t be able to get that offhours, and I’m fine with that. It weakens our server, but imo it’s fair.

???

You guys have more than anything by double in T2.

Our NA is larger than FA’s, and significantly larger than SoS’ through the week, but not anywhere near double. And since all the servers make queues on reset that kind of negates any population advantage. Our offhours until recently was the smallest of the T2 servers, but we got a little help there too.

Wake up and look at the scores.. You guys destroyed T2.

Understand the lopsided score is t1 guilds moving down to us to break the t1/t2 barrier (both tiers locked far too long) and many on fa/SOS letting us do just that… Some is pop disparity, but a large portion of the disparity is “letting us” ppt…..

Actually, SoS has been that sapped by the constant blobbing that a “full effort” wouldn’t look much different than what you saw this weekend.

This change is much needed relief for us. Cheers also to DH which never should have been in that situation and to DB; who if they would lose their SEA guilds would be much more balanced and able to grow without a bandwagon followed by implosion every 9 months.

I think in competitive matchups the potential is there for some fun “rock’em, sock’em robot” action; but it’s just going to make things hateful for non-ppt oriented players and folks who are outnumbered in certain timezones.

There’s already a very active forum for talking about the matchup. This thread is about addressing an issue that doesn’t affect our current tier competitors in any way other than it turns a potential three-way fight into a mostly 2-way fight on bad weeknights.

I can tell you that no one in our community is pushing for any kind of focus on either server and are playing it straight.

Home Server Reset with HoT release

in WvW

Posted by: Chris.3290

Chris.3290

There would be shuffling around and it would not be a perfect solution. However, it would act as a reset as PvE purists don’t really care what server they are on, while PvX players will move wherever their guild does.

Yes, we will be looking down the barrel of this problem again in a few months post-release; but it’s at least a start.

Home Server Reset with HoT release

Chris.3290

With the static rankings settling in again, rather than raising caps, having non T1 servers at FULL, etc.
Why not remove everyone’s home server selection and let everyone pick anew when HoT releases?
This might help servers that are FULL and might encourage some guilds and players to spread out among different servers; renewing matchups which in many cases are lopsided and/or stale.
Is there a reason not to do this?

i was under the impression it was 24/7 full. It may have helped the OP by stating when the server isn’t full for prospective pugmanders to join.

I am honestly not joining the conversation to shill for my server, but if people are interested in knowing when we are open; we maintain a public shoutbox at www.sosgw2.com and our members post regularly when we are open. Currently we do not have a set time where we have less people than at other times, it comes and goes throughout the day.

Aren’t you full?

SoS full because 90% of their population plays PvE and the population system isn’t representational of the WvW population.

I know why. My point was – you can’t convince people to move there if it is impossible to move there. I see people always recommending t1 in other threads as well.

Which is why this thread exists. SoS went FULL a year ago but we were winning by wide margins at that point so it wasn’t an issue.

I think ANET never really counted on situations where servers who were FULL would be facing significant issues when facing servers that are not.

Megaservers are a major culprit, as an overwhelming majority of our population is not interested in WvW and even those with casual interest are turned off by the competitive personalities of those who don’t mind the challenge we are facing.

Right, but the OP was looking for people to join SOS was how I read it. The status is royally messed up indeed, but until that is fixed no one is joining SOS (fa,bg, Jq, TC, etc). Just like the other thread and OP was looking for a heavy Aussie server and t1 was recommended….
That said, I do hope this is the highest of priorities as it is crippling communities (and doesn’t seem too hard to fix on the surface).

Actually we are open quite frequently. We don’t need full size guilds as much as we need talented PuGmanders. That said, an ANet driven solution to the FULL issue would probably solve that issue as well.

If your concern is that I’m just going to tell our Anet folks that “SoS is not winning teh PPT, must fix or they’ll die!”, rest assured I’m not that naive and I understand there may be those that treat PPT as a necessary evil to maintain the status quo so we can have fun and fights and you can’t really measure that unless you’re actually there. (At the very least, t3 has that as a common mindset, at least as an ideal, what actually happens is another topic.) Though of course, I’m not going to simplify everyone’s motives for playing or what they consider fun, that would take forever to write anything exhaustive.

Actually I am more concerned that solutions might come in the form of server dissolution.

Ok, here’s a brief PoV of the current state of affairs. Server transfers are not such a financial hardship that individuals cannot freely move when the mood takes them. As things stand right now, it’s easy to see trends so that servers on upswings have a cumulative growth pattern and servers on downswings have cumulative decreases. Hence the popular “implosion” terminology.

Now…if ANet were to announce that everyone would be deassociated with their home server when HoT is released, with maybe only a 2 day warning…THAT would fix a lot of problems.

First off, hardcore WvW’rs would avoid server with PvE friendly names. With that lesson learned that would go a long way to avoiding this problem in the future.

Second, with such a brief window; there would not be enough time for everyone to coordinate in order to stack a server beforehand (see Henge of Denravi, circa September 2012). This would cause hardcore guilds to spread out more, mixing with other guilds with more casual styles.

Is this a perfect solution? Of course not. I’m certain a majority will still pick their original servers, and that 2 days are enough for the word to get out in the WvW community if there would be a new “powerhouse” server. However, it would fix this specific problem that has affected servers like Sea of Sorrows, Darkhaven, and until recently Dragonbrand.

It would also encourage people to play with more diverse groups and the learning curve of the new Borderland maps would cause people to hesitate before restarting the previous pattern of mass transfers.

And yes, this has been marked as one of the more pressing issues in WvW, and the near future.

I’m hoping this is solved in a constructive manner. While they are currently on top in the tier, FA had this exact problem about a year ago.

Sea of Sorrows is not competitive in terms of points; but we do maintain a high skill level in players. I hope that someone looks at this as an opportunity to try out their skills as a commander, or an experienced commander wanting to take on a new challenge.

We have good off-hours coverage and some people working hard and playing hard in off-times; we just need some people with good attitudes, patience, yet a who love a good fight to join us and get the ball rolling.

Server Takeover -- WvW Unbalanced IOJ

in WvW

It’s actually a well-established fact at this time that IoJ is in fact the farm team for Fort Aspenwood. About every 15-18 months they buy off the best players on that server and leave it to crumble down until they rebuild again, then repeat.

All you can do in any bad situation is rally around your active commanders and give them all the support you can.

I think it’s unhealthy and limiting for any guild to be 100% about PPT, or to be completely indifferent.

Spending every night on a trebuchet or arrow cart is as bad as doing nothing but running around looking for OJs or waiting for another guild in the OS.

What seems to work best, is push the enemy and if they defend, have a good fight; and vice-versa. If they are poor fighters or don’t respond, continue to take real-estate until you get a good fight. If no one can fight you, hold on to real-estate so that your server can advance until you find someone who can fight you. Rinse and repeat.

Creating a ruthlessly organised server

Posted by: Chris.3290

Chris.3290

There are people who play for score, and typically their skill-level is what you would expect of someone who takes credit for what a team made up of hundreds of people accomplish over the course of a week.

It is the metric that determines victory, and that should not be ignored. However, true victory is when you and your guild/zerg/friends set a goal and achieve it.

You decide you want to hold a tower against vastly superior numbers; that matters more than score. You want to beat a numerically superior force in open field, that’s a great goal that has little to do with the score.

Perhaps you want to take a key enemy objective and force them to queue a map in order to lodge you out. It’s a little bit trolly, but it’s also a goal.

Legendary Commanders

in WvW

Posted by: Chris.3290

Chris.3290

If there was a formula for commander ratings (if such a thing existed it would be:
Strength of guild core around them * 2(hours played daily) * .5(commander skill)

In other words, time devoted is the biggest constant. Xushin plays heavy during EU and runs largely unopposed which gives him a lot of followers.
DK will play for 24 hrs straight and sometimes longer. Indo is a great commander, but TW is a good guild.

I’ve seen commanders that do everything right but get bogged down by poor skill and coordination by their guild; and others that have all that but they do a 3 hour raid 3 days a week so they don’t accomplish much.

Top reasons to rage-quit:

1. Queue on map, only 10 on tag
2. People who are rude when you ask folks to join on VoiP
3. People who have 8 character slots who are all lvl 80, but bring a ranger anyway
4. SQUIRREL!
5. Autistic scouting: “inc!”; “where, which server, how many”…10 seconds pass…" at (point furthest from your zerg)"; “Do they have siege down and how many?”…20 seconds with no answer…you waypoint and arrive in time to see 3 people chased off by defenders.

If you are playing WvW and actually want to win, or at least play well; get on tag, listen, and follow as best as you can.

If the commander is odious or you are just not grooving on the experience, either find a non-direct way to help (walk yaks, scout, etc) or swap maps and find someone you can play with. Don’t be dead weight.

In my eyes T3 is an dead end since over an year. T3 atm kills the rest of the fun you actually have gotten. IoJ is just the last victim, I have lost the interest in wvw and in the game itself.

NSP and IoJ are more vocal about the disparity because it’s worse than ever, but T3 has been the meat-grinder since launch. The only balanced matches have been during seasons, or when an implosion comes down and hasn’t quite hit bottom yet.

I think the number of implosions that brought NSP to rank 8 are the real culprits for the problems. Before S3 any of the T3 servers could have done ok against T2; but they chickened out then went on buying sprees for guilds afterwards.

Server Loyalty

Chris.3290

In the end, it’s up to the players on servers to determine if people want to stay and play WvW there. Ignoring the commanders, trolling, not playing as a team, all those make people who know what they are doing want to leave.

You might just be on a server full of meatheads and you can either transfer or figure out how to deal with it.

Chris.3290

It’s 2015; server loyalty, while not dead, is a lesser concern for most guilds and it comes to quality of play and what kind of environment you wish to play in.

Numbers and coverage fluctuate as you go up and down the ladder.

If you are looking for server stability, you might as throw the dice as anyone can implode. T1 is FULL but seem to have that worked out. T2-T3 are as unstable as you can get but are also the most competitive scene (as in, there can be surprises).

You usually see a mid-tier make a rapid ascension and then equally rapid descension every 6 months; but most of those servers are looking mostly stable.

Everyone needs to step out of the spin room and look at a few things:

First off, SoS just gained some muscle that will be apparent in coming days; the current glicko disparity is going to lessen and they will be staying in the rotation.

Second, DB is going to get tired of playing for YB. They have their own ambitions and helping YB is not on their “to do” list.

Third, everyone hates YB and they are losing significant coverage. Only SG has announced they are leaving, but it looks like IX and Ts will go with them. [Qss] had a great showing….in NA; so if they merged then that means cA is not playing SEA?

Fourth, no matter which server gets focused down; neither SoS nor YB (DB and FA for that matter as well) will destack to the point where the T4-T5 servers that moved up to T3 can realistically compete against them.

YB was a beast before their T1 transfers and will still stomp T3. I know the entire list (it’s a very small one) of people thinking of moving if SoS gets “stuck” in T3 and SoS will still enjoy a large coverage and numbers advantage over T3.

I just want to emphasize to the long suffering folks in T3 range that if you think the current situation has a happy ending; you haven’t been paying attention.

The situation is getting close to a resolution, the point spread between T2 and T3 is getting so massive that point gains are almost impossible. However all three T2 servers enjoy significant off hours advantages. Only DB would potentially see a large exodus of guilds, but even then I’m not sure.

The real resolution will be he new maps, the new scoring system, and potentially a new tourney. With defense and hold time being weighted more all but guarantees YB will be going to T1 and there will be massive shuffling in that case. Also DB does not have a defensive culture so they are wobbly as well.

we dont need another tc clone in the form of yb in t1 tyvm, you can keep your siege lust in t2 where it belongs

Laughed multiple times. XTD has the consensus. The T1 leadership would have a real problem with open field siege tactics and 24/7 ppt focus. The servers like to take breaks from ppt without worry about losing rank. You convert to the meta or die in T1. Even if enough T1 leadership agreed to facilitate YB into T1 they still have to agree on who is leaving T1. None of the top three have leadership that want to leave the tier permanently or play a primary account below T1. So far, only individual guilds are leaving/arriving. What if YB did not comply with the meta? What then? It would be an ugly conflict of interest.

Its the twilight of the game’s political cycle. The end will be as painful as the playerbase chooses. The level of “care” can be controlled by leadership in all tiers. The level of cooperation this late in the game is up to the playerbase. Will they care about the happiness of other players? Can the community be moved to do something? Or will they continue to be anonymous entertainment users? Will it be an awful decline or a soft decline? Discuss. Choose. Move on.

Can we stop with the romantic daydreams about T2 guilds moving downwards after expressing discontentment with T3’s amount of fights and discuss this stinkbomb?

You read it here, the whole problem would be fixed but T1 match fixing (politely called politics here) has created an artificial barrier. They should end push weeks and let some new blood in.

Also Chaba, I agree in principle about the tournaments but I think that having one in the near future would be the best solution right now. Someone in the top 7 will crack and I’d rather it not be the traditional FA solution of letting them bore themselves to death LOL
