How hard would extra maps be?

A while ago now, a ANet representative interrupted a GvG and told them incorrectly that they were violating the game mode.
As an apology, the ANet team was able to open up a full-sized GvG arena as an add-on to the Obsidian Sanctum.

Given the relatively short time that content needed, along with the rapid pace of new maps and massive map changes shown in the LS1 for PvE; how hard would new maps be?

Obviously the playtesting for massive glitches would take a while, but they still haven’t cleared the original 4; so I don’t think that would be too massive of an effort.

I think the conceptual art and planning would be the most intensive in terms of labor and time.

Anyone with expertise or insight into the process care to weigh in?

Put my name as first-in-line on the “FA and DB swap places” bandwagon, but this is an issue that just needs time. Increasingly people on both SoS and Mag are for focusing DB; but no one wants to give up the good fights we have with each other to do that.

If FA’s progress stalls you might see such a thing happen; but FA should be in RNG range after this week and another strong push should give them good odds.

Weakest server should NOT be red

If they had tweaked the design of Mendon’s (put it against a wall, made approach narrow and covered by tower siege) it would be perfect to be Red.

Valley is by far the easiest to assault keep of the 3, and Lowlands is vulnerable from any of the 4 towers. One falls, trebs go up and walls go down.

OL and Veloka with a handful of defenders can easily cover each other and stop all but the most determined assaults.

We’re no longer pushing for EU recruitment (EU officer has a change in schedule and cannot be available).

However, our NA is getting more active and we’re making progress into getting back into strong numbers for raids. Still looking for more eles and a few more frontline to get a solid core group to build around for GvGs and zerg-busting.

Oh, I was misunderstanding the incredulity. FA has had a bad track record when it comes to warchests and using them. Especially since they really don’t need hopper NA unless INC convinced them they run late NA (like 8pm-12pm PST).

I heard they got some bronze leaguers for their night-time coverage but I hope they are ready for SoS’s bored nighttime legions. With DB avoiding fights with them (or blobbing), they really want someone new to sink their teeth into.

In fact, what happened/ is happening to FA is a lot of what this thread is about.

They lost out, big time, on server politics. In a better game, you shouldn’t be forced into decisions of whether or not to move up, to focus one server over another, or to buy coverage.

ArenaNet hosed everyone with the repeated increase of the server caps in T1. Increasing population limits for servers that were already FULL, while others were not; was just a slap in the face to so many others.

INC had made it public that they intended to get many members and transfer off. There was a “see you soon” post by them left in the PUBLIC section of the Maguuma forums…dated at the START of the season.

Everyone told HoD they had collected fairweather server hoppers…why did they think these guys would buck tradition and stay for them?

With two seasons now to go by, there is a trend that there tends to be a lot of movement at the end of each season. People and guilds who are ready for a change tend to move to new servers. Likewise, some servers over-perform in comparison to their non-season play.

In short, by 3-4 weeks post-season; the ratings do not resemble the state of affairs anymore. This can result in skewing placements for the following season as well; as the breakup of SoR caused a lot of change in ratings for higher tier servers, while dooming that server to a very horrible season experience.

We’re starting to see it again with some servers and it would help all involved if something were done to loosen the glacial pace of glicko change.

Maybe a quick week of daily matches to shake things loose, or perhaps increasing RNG for 2-3 weeks. Those would all help balance things out quicker.

This is purely an NA problem (EU looks pretty flat) but this would help shake things out before the next season announcement catches servers in the wrong place, wrong time again.

As mentioned before in this thread, this is a mature guild that was formed prior to launch and have made our home on Sea of Sorrows. With the tournament over we are retooling and rebuilding.

Disappointing Season 2

It looks like the 2vs1 on BG was necessary to have a semi interesting season. With the death of SOR there is no server that can challenge them straight up as things stand right now. JQ is still plagued by their same old weaknesses of no EU, a weak NA and being heavily militia based. TC is a Tier 1.25 server after the transfers, their coverage is better then it used to be but still has many gigantic holes and many of their guilds are still very relaxed and fun loving which makes TC a fun server but won’t be getting them any gold medal wins.

After this second season I’m predicting BG will go back to steamrolling unless JQ or TC gets some quality guilds to transfer in.

If BG’s “try-hard” culture relaxes into the more realistic mindset that WvW should be enjoyed; it should be more fun for all of kitten

is abhorring T1 politics and JQ seems to have accepted it’s a loser of an idea as well. BG takes that attitude and maybe concentrates on the quality of it’s players like it did just recently….it would change T1 from a job back into a game.

Perhaps people will start transferring to T1 for things other than seasons and you won’t have to purchase coverage. Just imagine it.

GW2 (China) and WvWvW (NA)(EU)

The main questions are will players already in China be able to transfer to Chinese servers, will Chinese servers be open to players outside of China, and will existing Chinese players have to buy the exclusive Chinese version to play on Chinese servers?

I imagine most OCX folks will stay put (why move to a non-english primary language server?); but what will this do to East Asian and SEA coverage if they are open. This would really change the T1 landscape, that’s for sure (if folks decided to play “closer to home”)

WvW scoring will be addressed after ANet removes Skyhammer from sPvP.

Add a Skyhammer terminal to every keep and tower in WvW. If your team is Outnumbered, you can access it to hit nearby enemy siege for massive damaged. Let PvD’rs do PvD.

Note: I’m on a top tier server that usually wins due to coverage, so I’m not doing T7 QQ. I actually think an active solution is best, as opposed to passive changes like changing PPT rates that unfairly reward servers for not playing outside of “prime time”.

Emerald Fang is a great guild for working adults, busy parents, and college students with a heavy course load.

Our member base stretches the ages, teenagers to people who were old enough to worry about being drafted. We have members on from multiple countries and some participation on 24 hours a day. We do not discriminate for any reason, in fact such behavior is against our guidelines.

The BG on SoS conspiracy is because the owner of the former SoS community site (former member of BG council) had posted a warchest on that site and he claims it’s all going to bring a “large guild over from BG.”

We figure either the money doesn’t exist, or it’s going to a legendary.

Of course , anyone on BG who is in talks with this individual (on the off chance he really is planning this) is encouraged to look up the legit site listed here on the forums and get the full story before they step in it.

Old Paradigm: The Alpha server (A) is assured victory due to server population and superior 24/7 coverage. The two weaker servers battle it for for the scraps of second place. Often the Alpha server would decide to punish one of the weaker servers by helping the other take Second.

New Paradigm: The two weaker servers take control, join forces to knock the Alpha server to third. Sharing the spoils of war.

What’s the difference? Why was the Old Paradigm OK…but the new one unfair?

Trading wins and ignoring each other practically the entire week is the difference. If they teamed up to wipe a server off the map and then focused on each other (while that server regroups) then that would be fine. It’s an issue when they don’t do that.

If that’s what it takes to beat “Server A” then that’s what it takes. Server A should stop making a spectacle of itself and realize that it’s no fun for anyone else if one server is so big that the other 2 have to unite to a ridonkulous degree in order to beat them.

Especially if this theoretical server had chosen to participate in “aggressive recruiting” practices using copious amounts of in-game currency and continued to do so after gaining advantages in coverage.

this “better to lose” concept is working well with CD in the Silver League since week 4.

In which way? Cause as i understand it some servers are not playing for loose but rather accepting that they cant win and therefore play with a different mindest. It`s just relaxing into it but i dont understand this as tanking because there is no gain in it.

Also Chris, when did we decide they wanted to fight tc and therefore go t1? Wasnt it about balancing t2?As for vocal denial,afaik there was no vocal to turn guilds away but you can easily mail me those vocals. Some voiced concerns but the overall majority said " we wont turn you away" which just the same as saying yes in a veiled way (it`s like you have sex without protection and then you are suprised your wife is pregnant). You really think people that left sor on the downfall (like we were left) for sos make good additions?
Secondly, imbalance comes 2 servers fighting each other for the last spot while realizing that beating third is too hard due to imbalanced coverage. You think the 120k lead win on the first league match was healthy?

I meant fight TC when they were in T2, before SoR imploded. We didn’t really gain much after TC moved up. 2 havoc sized SEA guilds and TW; and we did not go out an court any of them.

I also don’t get the “we won’t turn you away” line. Please direct me to the person with the allow/deny switch to transfers on SoS. Also, when a group has made up their mind to come of course we’ll welcome them.
The only server that tells transferring guilds to go kitten off is Maguuma, the same guys you were just pitying (who took our garrison twice this morning so don’t feel too sorry for them).

Why are people only now getting an understanding of the point system? Last week Far Shiverpeaks realized they could actually lose and not get penalized points-wise just to skip a match with Gandara. Most other servers that are tied for second place knew of this from the beginning and didn’t withstand unfair PPT wars every second week ^^

So was there a concerted effort to lose? And if so, was there any controversy within the server because of that? This kind of thing can really damage a server — which is why no one should be put into a situation where the incentive is to lose.

Tanking scores is incredibly easy and doesn’t have to be at the expense of casuals. All you need to do is to allow some structure to be capped by the enemy servers for tick, and karma train them. You aren’t getting points, your casuals get loot, open field fights still go on and everyone is happy

Almost inevitably, people will discuss the tanking in mapchat and that’ll lead to fights between those who want to tank and those who feel you should never tank.

And then you have people who get overzealous and start griefing their own server (waste supplies, build useless siege, the usual) to make sure they lose.

This all happened on NSP before Season 1. It damaged the server and it took quite a while to recover from that.

I am personally one of those people that think you should never tank. And that both ways. SOS tanked on the downfall from tier 1 to t4 on purpose while a few of us literally tried to run against windmills stopping this. Result: boring t4 matches for weeks on end and lost lots of good people that would have prefered t3 at least instead of the easy wins. It was for me one of the most upsetting moments and every since this time my connection to whatever goes and “speaks for sos” turns out very controversal.
Now SOS tanks in the other direction, by indirectly or directly stacking once again making t2 matches boring. In some way I feel sorry for mag and db cause i know how it is to sit on the other side of such a match just as well but nevertheless both server handle this way better than ours would likely do.

Now if we look at leagues – no matter my opinion- I think there are very few exceptions where you can actually pull of tanking on purpose if you got a solid community. Tanking in most cases includes the opportunistic development of getting somewhere where there is an easy win. As a result that server will attract opportunists an as a follow-up it becomes instable which is where i am for example very worried that sos might be there already. People that enjoy a challenge are not gonna like being in a match where the result is pre-definded or where the challenge is countered not by sportmanship but by stacking (a difference i noticed often na people cant make) and as a result once a difficult match turns up everyone but the few vanish.

The only real opportunity where a loose is better than a win is if you dont do it for points but for another “goal” that is overriding points. In my experience what quite often seems to work is some sort of revenge on a moral basis.
Otherwise it will indeed damage the server on a long time basis in which you not only use the solid people that play for the server but also the opportunists which leave once a better offer turns up.

To be fair we were ramping up to fight TC, not to kick around Mag and DB. It should also be noted that our community was very vocal about encouraging transfers to FA and Mag after TC went to T1 and it was clear we were much larger than the competition.

Our NA was still just a little bit bigger than FA’s prior to the season. The real reason for the one-sided matches is that most Magummies do not ppt and DB is really T2.5

That being said, I think a lot of it is participation and the commitment of that participation. Getting the folks online organized and coordinated will make any server better and might attract the coverage.

No one tanked out of Gold. DB made it on the strength of farming SoR’s ranking for almost 3 straight weeks and by showing some backbone in their T2 matchup; while FA had their off-hours coverage poached by other servers (transfers at least partially paid for).

I just hope they give things time to settle before proposing Season 3. The long-term stability of FA and HoD are in question; along with the question of how GoM will perform once they move into T5-T4 and see increased difficulty in their matches. NS and CD are losing their pre-season lustre but should offer increased level of combat for them and no one really likes their chances between IoJ and YB (YB interest will drop post season so I suspect SBI will get the #9 spot).

What makes a server good at WvW?

Coverage is the linchpin, but not the only factor by far.

Good commanders and strong guilds to either build around or to work in tandem with mixed groups is important.

The level of participation of the average combatant is highly important. A solitary roamer doing their own thing is not very helpful. A roamer on VoIP, slapping yaks and scouting enemy movements is invaluable.

Lastly the ratio of hardcore WvW vs casuals. If everyone on most given servers were to jump into WvW in the middle of the day you’d have a beastly EU presence that would put a lot of numbers on the board.
The greatest thing preventing this is that most servers don’t have many hardcore WvW folks who run midday or have tags to follow at that time of day.

How much time people are willing to invest in WvW is also key. Most NA servers see 90% of the heated fights happen between 5pm-9pm server time. However NA folks are getting home from work as early as 1pm server time, but you don’t see broad pushes at that time.

You want to play the ppt game, then you got to recruit hard for your guild and get like-minded folks. You on the East Coast and get home quick, find everyone in WvW on at that time and recruit them to your guild. Buy a tag and just PvD everything before the enemy gets home. You on the West Coast, stay up a little late and end NA strong.

The natural OCX/SEA populations on the Gold League servers have typically been on those servers for a long time. They aren’t going to suddenly decide they want to PvD in Bronze League some day; nor will they appreciate being forced to by some of the lame suggestions that clutter this forum (they’d probably quit playing).

You simply have to look at how to better use what you have and make the best of it.

Chris, you do not speak for the majority of SoS. The top 3 servers of Tier 1 have functional war councils that can decide and execute strategies. It is no small feat to coordinate many guilds to follow the same strategy.

The only server that is worried about SoS strategy these coming weeks is BG as this post’s analysis suggest a possibility of them ending up as 5th place in season 2 rather than the predicted 1st place. This is potentially a fatal blow that can cause mass exodus of their guilds to other servers. I am sure SoS understands very well how it is to fall from rank 1 , free-fall and struggle back up again. However, to pull off a grand strategy, it all depends on SoS war council ability.

First off, I offered an opinion, the “I think” part was the caveat.

Secondly, there is no war council on SoS; we don’t go in for that bullshrimp. People are even touchy about people who are official points of contact for our server because it almost seems too much like a council.

Our discussions about such matters are on our community site and we have open conversations about any strategies or tactics we may wish to employ in terms of WvW.
There has not been any grand strategy in place since our T1 exodus ended and hasn’t been since; nor would the server at large adhere to any such autocratic decrees.

As for what happens to BG; if the egos on that server are so fragile that the rankings in a system, widely accepted as incredibly flawed, are enough to cause an implosion…
Well maybe that needs to happen.

I wish those that remain the best of luck and that those special, fragile flowers who wilt in the face of adversity not come to SoS.

There is no scenario at this point where SoS gains anything by losing. I speak for a plurality on that server in saying we’d find the satisfaction of defeating a T1 server, more rewarding than a number of tickets.
All the people obsessed with tournament winnings are on BG anyhow.

As for the tournament, it does need to be rethought out.. Gold and Bronze are playing out almost precisely to predictions in terms of rankings. Silver had it’s usual bandwagon juggernaut that had greater success than last season because FA had their night coverage bribed away and a few of their guilds decided to spend the season in Gold League.

Other than that, they just confirmed what most suspected.

I personally find the current situation hilarious. Be as it may, BG just needs to do to JQ what it did in the SoS matchup last week.
Don’t attack TC, just go all out on JQ. Only fight TC when they push into your territory.
TC has crappy PuG discipline, and eventually they’ll attack JQ; and problem solved.

Now quit these embarrassing posts or xfer to a server that doesn’t tick the others off so much that they get 2v1’d every week.

Emerald Fang is a WvW-focused guild that has nightly raids, with large “all-call” raids Friday-Sunday in the evenings; but we typically have some folks running nightly.

Having my Alt still on SoS, I don’t think a lot of people really understand how large the gap of T3 and T2 is currently. Tbh I think DB and Mag could handle the current wagon quite easily.

I was wondering why you left so quickly, didn’t realize you multi-accounted. LOL, I wondered if it was something we said.

I think server “X” will do just fine at first. The question is how will fairweather hoppers feel when they start losing in the off hours.

I don’t know what server you’re on but here in T1 Bloodlust adds strategic value and all servers are vying for control of it. It’s not uncommon for 5-10 man and a lot of times even larger havoc groups to be battling it out for control of ruins while the main zerg takes objectives. We also have enough dedicated people and our militia generally is smart enough to stomp people, even in the middle of zergs when we have it.

Yes, I’ve seen 20 man “havoc” groups taking ruins from BG and I quite frankly think it’s BS that we have OJ popping in the middle of the ruins.

That’s one tier out of 8 that gives a rip, and quite frankly I didn’t see TC hugging the ruins nearly as much as BG did.

The only reason it has strategic value is that it takes the game out of the hands of individuals; which works for the granfaloon blobs that BG plays with.

No more mechanics that encourage mindless blobbing, make every single person’s contribution count.

% of WvW focused guilds flocking to a server cannot be managed, but the game should not be built to accommodate it.

Most fun open world PvP I have ever had is in GW2 and still going strong almost 3 years later. Could it be better absolutely, but for a game with no monthly fee they push out a massive amount of content on a regular basis. Sure it is mostly PvE and WvW surface changes but it isn’t like they haven’t tried larger changes (ruins, EotM, Wxp, etc).

The thing to remember here is that the game is three years old… few games hold players attention beyond 100 hours. Even fewer beyond a thousand.

GW2 WvW interest continues because they quite frankly have no viable competition. The latest PvP title making headlines? Titanfall with it’s 6v6 format.

You can’t find 80v80v80 in a well executed and immersive environment anywhere.
Because of that, ANet is resting on it’s laurels with small fixes and updates that most people did not desire.

A few big changes to this game mode will inject more life and interest into GW2 than a hundred Scarlet episodes or even new PvE zones (though those would be great too).

1. Get rid of Bloodlust. Make all stomps worth a point, make every individual contribution count.

2. Have ruins offer unique buffs with limited uses. Example: Capture Temple of Lost Prayers, up to 5 players can get +15% swiftness buff for 10 minutes; recharges in 5 min cooldown, even on recapture.

3. Guild Commander Tag. Been asked for repeatedly. Make it yellow and only visible to the guild.

4. Borderland map redesign. EBG has a natural flow to it. It works great for the 3-way combat. The Borderland map does not have an organic flow and has way too much empty space.
If the resources are not there for a full redesign, I suggest two lesser changes. Make the Skritt and Centaur camps worth something. Example: Capturing the Skritt puts up a blockade that prevents access to the North camp (at the north camp switchback).
Second change, get rid of garrison water gate. The garrison should be the most easily defended structure after the North camp. Four gates plus wall on the North side are more than enough access points.

Look at how PvP in GW1 evolved. Crits and direct damage were repeatedly nerfed, while degen was buffed overwhelmingly.

The folks responsible for PvP balance at ANet love their necros and mesmers, that has been the case for over 6 years now and I don’t see why anyone would expect that to change with a new installment.

ArenaNet has made it clear that they are in 100% support of stacking higher tiers and in creating bandwagon servers that are doomed to implode by their nature.

Giving even just one mid-tier server a lower cost will create a bandwagon/snowball effect is very little time. The result is HoD with queue times to rival the T1 servers.

Then there is T1. At a time when attrition is high among the population of the game (at the same time a major competing product is released as well) they raise the population caps in the highest servers.
They have done this so many times that the “stacked” servers from the early months of the game (HoD, SoS) would probably be lucky to be T2.

I just hope that the dev team will soon direct energies towards improvements over short-term profit infusions that could easily kill interest in the game for many users.

Last season was just a jumbled mess that actually saw many matchups never happen. (JQ got T2 matches twice, BG once, SoR never).

Not that the current mess is any better.

I just want the matchups and final rankings to be fair to all servers involved. Any one server should not be punished in final rankings because they were up against tougher competition for most of the season.

You wanted a prize because you are in tier 1 and feel entitled.

Here’s an alternate look at what’s happening with the 6 server format;

In terms of flat population (discarding WvW-focused population and coverage; because ANet refuses to exist these are issues); the 3 T1 servers have pretty close to equal populations and likewise with T2.

The rewards actually reward those that perform the best within their own tier.
Just let that stew a moment; rewards based on a level playing field.

No one expected the winner of T2 to perform well against T1, so if you did expect so then why not just hand out the tickets and end the season now?

One could argue that SoS has the same challenge in facing T2 that BG has in facing T1.
All TC has to do is stay in BG’s good graces and hope that the focus remains on JQ. Should that be grounds for 2nd place finish, essentially coasting?

If one looks at is as the reward is based on how one performs against your “peers” then the way this will pan out makes 100% sense.

There is compensation for T1 in that there is no way that any could place worse than 4th (barring defeat by DB or Mag, which just isn’t going to happen).

As for TC’s current trajectory to place 4th, that is up to the pre-season and TC just couldn’t beat JQ (though it could during the season) during that time so que sera.

For the record, the greater variety shown in Season 1 might have been more interesting; but it is what it is.

Lowering server caps could be a good start. I still have no idea why ANet increased server caps after season 2 started.

Look at all the transfers to your server, add up how many gems that is. There is your answer.

Gems purchased with Gold turns into inflation of the cost of gems. Gem increases not only increases the likelihood of a cash purchase, but also increases the temptation of the lazy to convert cash to gems to gold.

They even created more demand by creating free transfers at the bottom of the Silver League if this latest bandwagon goes the way of the last few.

They got the idea from a dominatrix who would be “hired” then would have the clients whip themselves.

Sorry for the crude analogy, but it’s the only one I can come up with that makes sense.

Expect the JQ and SoS constantly swap places as long as TC finishes 2nd. TC/JQ can at best finish 3rd or 5th in the 7 week tournament. Due to TC/JQ having 4 tier 1 match-ups and SoS winning 4 tier 2 match-ups. A 6 server league is not the best format for a swiss tournament, but the 9 server leagues will be more interesting.

Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of….. so there is a high chance that SoS will be 2nd overall despite them not actually being better than TC/JQ.

Very unfair tournament…..and I don’t like it one bit. Coming in 3rd to BG & JQ, that’s fine, but coming in 5th behind other servers who get placed higher because they have easier matches….just not right.

TC should come in at a comfortable 4th, because Maguuma is losing the T2 match this week.
There was the threat that Maguuma could have snatched 2nd in the final match; but JQ made sure they don’t have that option anymore.
The only thing that could change is if DB and Mag 2v1 SoS to drag us down to 4th; but as much as they probably don’t want us to get 2nd, I’m sure they find the thought of JQ and TC finishing behind SoS to be hilarious.

Swiss Tournament = Winners play with winners.
EU gold, next week

SFR, Baruch Bay, Elona Reach (winners of this week matchup)
Deso, Kodash, VZ (2nd place)
JS, Riverside, Augury Rock (3rd place)

Why? Because they have win their matches,.

That works for the EU gold league because there are 9 teams……NA Gold only has 6 teams and so it looks like TC and JQ are getting the shaft.

OMG. 6 teams in the 1st ladder? That’s really stupid.

Silver – 9 teams
Bronze – 6 teams

Actually it makes sense because the gap between T2 and T3 was massive in the lead up to Season 1. The gap between T2 and T1 is already a matter of exponential differences; but it would have been cruel and unusual to put SBI and IoJ in with the rest of us.

If you say it enough times, Chris, it must be true, right? Like how SoS tanked in the match up against Mag and DB, let Mag and DB feed PPT off you guys, despite all your threats to DB that SoS will stomp them if they came to T2. No worries though. BG did the same thing.

I honestly feel bad for those on FA who played it straight 9 times out of 10. FA was on the cusp of greatness there for a little while post-season and the actions of a few let it slip from their fingers once T2 became a three-way match.

It all rolls into your “tanking” slander. It wasn’t tanking because both servers brought the heat on the top server in the match. If the broader FA community had been on board with such a plan (as they were with TC and we almost saw them fall apart given how they lost their minds the last week we both focused them) there would have been a lot more support from both servers on the plan to focus DB (everyone lost interest by Monday, deciding that DB was in better shape for Gold than FA was at the time) and FA might have still been in scoring range to take the 6th spot from Maguuma.

History lesson over.

Either way, FA now has a perception problem that most there don’t deserve.

YB’s “unconventional tactic” was to team up with EB against SBI. That’s really not that genius of a strategy.

If it wasn’t genius, why is everyone still talking about this match 6 months afterwards and is the only non-T1 (one week) matchup that people have ever talked about?

Too many cowards and fools are too easy to take the easy way out, rather than strive to take out the top server. Fort Aspenwood is in Silver League solely because too many on their server decided to play for second, so often.

The issue I have with the leagues, is that a server that can’t compete with TC is going to place above them in the standings due to a bad scoring system. gg ANet

This from the server that took 3rd by being carried by another server?

I think the blood price of every other week with BG and TC makes it work out as even Stevens.

The true highway robbery is that TC is going to take 4th behind SoS and JQ; two servers that they could beat every encounter.
