Punishing The WvW Experience Was I Right?

I didn’t know what the team had in mind as far as responding to the input about the whole “Sneak Attack” event, so I casually hung around outside a conference room and nabbbed a word with John Corpening when he came out.

The event lasts for one month, and the team is playing a lot to experiment with the trial systems, just as players are doing. There’s been a lot of feedback — both before the event started and now, during the actual event. The team is going to review the feedback and engage in some forum discussions about it towards the end of the event.

I believe Sneak Attack ends around January 13, so be looking for dev posts around that date.

We appreciate the team be willing to add tweaks to the gameplay. I hope you take the feedback and perhaps consider options that encourage players to fight against the odds. In fact, call it that “Against All Odds”.

Tiered discussion on No White Swords

I question whether or not a change that encourages more offense given that many players felt that defense is undervalued and the already “pure offense” that EotM offers.

I’m in T2 NA and while our tier has been affected less than lower populated tiers, this change has not provided any benefit. Meanwhile, the PPK change is very nice and appreciated.

SEA or East Asia Server

Chris.3290

All jabbing aside, T2 has a lot of quiet nights in SEA, with maybe 1-2 guilds per a server running in SEA and a lot of empty space. The last time I played SEA I took my ranger out and solo’d two towers (a lot of running back and forth for supply).
So if you are looking for a quiet, yet not so quiet that you’ll never see anyone; go to T2.

GW2: Tier 1 Server Leader Meeting

in WvW

Posted by: Chris.3290

Chris.3290

I have no doubt that the self appointed server leaders all meant well and had good intentions. It’s also not really in doubt that a rotating door into T1 is not healthy. Every time a server has dropped out, the transfers off are uneven.
It’s not stretching the imagination that if it became some sort of zero-sum apocalypse that we could see one super-stacked server at the top that just chews through the different servers that move up until everyone quits WvW.

However, the same folks involved have been those who have been at the heart of many of the destructive practices that has driven their tier to this state. The double-talk, the artificial bolstering, 2v1’s that were more destructive to those doing it than the one they did it against, the fact that no two servers have pushed on the same week outside of seasons in recent memory….

There is a purity in playing to win. If you have to have commanders play for 8 hours to win, you are doing it wrong. If you have a commander who is willing to do that; then fine. However, that shouldn’t be a regular thing.

It’s simply a matter of time and pressure to take any structure, but no one wants to spend their guild’s entire 3 hour raid to take one structure. Working adults and students simply do not have enough time during the day to devote to siege wars.
Why do 90% of structures flips happen in off hours? If you compare the number of structures flipped (even weighted for population) in “primetime” vs the rest of the day, it doesn’t even begin to compare.

We get it, the WvW community is acerbic and not well-mannered. We promise to use strict Oxbridge pleasantries if the development/communication team can meet us half-way and at least acknowledge the existence of this forums beyond CDIs that seem little more than going through the motions.

Nevermind that this particular problem affects gameplay for more than WvW; that they are using 161 and 162 as heavy load servers and they are obviously not up to the task. Whether it’s the connection to the servers or the hardware itself, this is a serious concern.

For it to be swept under the rug because it just WvW this time (words that should not exist in ANet’s minds), doesn’t change the fact that they are operating to faulty servers.

Seriously? Questioning communication after a WvW CDI? To me, this seems like digging pretty deep for the OP to find something to complain about. They communicated extensively on WvW. All the devs jumped in it together. Now they are taking time to mull over ideas. I find limited validity at best to the “communication” complaint.

Which CDI? There’s been several, but notice the large gap after the EotM one. The tone of that one was duplicitous and there was a real change in the nature of communication after that one.

The developers have their own vision of what they want to develop, and if that’s not what we want we’ll be hung out to dry. Lack of customer-focus has sunk bigger and more successful companies than ANET.

ANet is ran by artists, there is little art in large scale PvP. No stories to tell, no impressive world bosses, gimmicky bosses, etc.

Also to be fair, any change they make is going to kitten someone off. There is little they can do to make this segment of the population truly happy. Pick the three biggest complaints on these forums and you’ll find someone saying changes to them will ruin their playstyle.

WvW needs a major overhaul in regards to maps. Not just looks, but layout and mechanics. That DOES take a lot of time and investment. Testing for glitches alone is a major undertaking. I wish they had the willingness to undertake this; but they would only do it if they somehow work it into the Living Story and find out how to get people pumped about buying related merchandise in the gem shop.

I went to a “meet & greet” with ANet in 2013. The entire group of people there were asking about guild halls, guild capes, GvG, all things that people wanted.

They basically had a long the most junior engineer (looked like he was still pubescent) and threw him under the bus to answer those questions (no answers).

They want to do creative storytelling that promotes Seattle cultural aesthetics while showcasing Dociu’s artwork. Things like engaging large scale PvP is not on their list.
Also, they haven’t given up on E-sports for SPvP have they?

If they put GvG in the expansion they won’t have to update WvW much. They make it allow for 3 different match sizes (10s, 15s, and 20s); then balance it so that combat > gimmicks….
WvW would look a lot different even 1 month later in terms of who’s playing, and how they are playing.

Breaking into NA T1

in WvW

YB’s only shot at T1 would be if/when Dragonbrand returns to T2 they roll over and do everything YB wants them to do. While I do not presume to know what folks on another server are thinking; I imagine that line of thinking is not on their list of things they want to do in T2.

YB will have to wait for the next Season Tournament to see how they stack with the big boys in T1 (it won’t be pretty).

YB has a lot to recommend itself as a potential T1 server, but the fact is that it’s only at #4 due to a couple of large guilds that transferred down from kitten hit doors in quiet hours. Without those groups, it would be a pretty balanced matchup with maybe a slight edge to SoS due to a recovering OCX presence.

What gives the NCSoft report some weight is that it sounded like a “panic release” when their stock price dropped despite beating expectations.
Companies respond to unexplained drops in stock by shoring up their financial outlook. They knew that trumping up B&S release wasn’t going to assuage any concerns (releasing a game several years old in a new market isn’t a hard hitting outlook.)
However, the Guild Wars franchise is their best selling product over the last 10 years and it’s world-wide appeal makes it big news.
If they “cry wolf” they won’t be able to play this card again the next time the investors get shaky.

The entirety of LS1 was mapped out by the time it started. The artwork, level design, etc has all been done long before hand. The hardest part is doubtlessly the implementation and bug scouring.

Taken the gaps in between new releases (the implementation and bug scouring happening during this since long gaps before new maps are introduced) you have to ask what the design teams have been doing?

I think the only hard part will be the ANet team selling the expansion hype, while not confirming it until they definitely have a hard date they can meet.

They know what players want. They want guild capes, guild halls, GvG, and multiple explorable areas that aren’t “gimmicky” or at least have unique and intriguing gimmicks to each one.

I think I figured out who "E" is.

Evon Gnashblade:
Evon founded the BLTC back when Charr/Human hostilities were still brewing, as an agent for the Ash Legion.
It gave the charr an invaluable legitimate reason to be in Kryta, while he could use his thief abilities to move stealthily in human towns and even Divinity’s Reach.
When peace broke out he was mostly a free agent, but it’s almost impossible to believe that the Order of Whispers was ignorant of this, so he’s probably in an intelligence sharing operation with them. With Trading Posts everywhere, information throws freely into his office and if anyone ever questioned that he could explain it was all for smart investing. That would explain why Delaqua Investigations isn’t hurting for money and most importantly why he could not deal with the situation at the Dragon Bash himself.

The only other theory I like is Livia and the lack of necromancy rules her out.

I took Ogden’s incredulity to be the voice of “GW1 players” who know about Glint and had figured out about the significance of the vision long before this update. Acting as the player’s surrogate, if you will.

Free transfers to Bronze and Silver from Gold

in WvW

Posted by: Chris.3290

Chris.3290

Ok, here’s a plan. Start with everyone at 1800 Gem to transfer
If a server wins more than 3 times consecutively, they should have their cost increase by 100 Gems a week after that for every consecutive win.
If a server gets 3rd more than 3 times consecutively, their prices should decrease by 100 gems a week for every consecutive loss.

Since this would fix higher tier imbalances faster, close T8 NA and T9 EU and give those players free transfers.

The number one disruptive force in WvW is when you get a powerful server at the top of the tier that is too strong for the others to beat, but not powerful enough to move up a tier and remain there.

Additionally, this will give great assistance to servers experiencing implosions (to allow quicker stabilization and rebuild) and discourage stacking already dominant servers.

I don’t know a single WvW player who is not pumped by the idea of more guild-centric options in the game.

Pleased to meet you… As a member of a small guild, I’m not interested in guild centric mechanics as they are more likely to favor larger guilds over smaller ones (who already have a lot of issues with the upgrading process)

Obviously there should be a balance and should not exclusively cater to guilds that accept anybody and everybody just for influence and numbers.

Much like the guild halls in Gw1 everything a large guild can get a small one should be able to add as well, though it would take more time.

There are a lot of ways they could implement this that could be fun and add a new dimension. Yet another opportunity they have left on the vine.

The mechanics in the Silverwastes is fantastic and I love the update, but people here have a marvelous point in that it could be the groundwork for a truly perception-shattering change to PvP in GW2.

Players have been clamoring for a happy, more balanced medium in PvP. Most people call it GvG in a nod to the excellent format in the previous title; but a large number of players that I talk to would love to see an ArenaNet supported format for teams of 15-20.

I’ve been to meet and greet events and I know your folks are pestered about guild capes, halls, and GvG at every single one.
Look at how popular the Obsidian Sanctum has been with many players! You have PvE zones that are more interesting and beautiful; but do they bring back players every night (no fair counting world bosses!)

WvW players ARE the most difficult to please players in the game and “why bother” is probably a tempting option; but I don’t know a single WvW player who is not pumped by the idea of more guild-centric options in the game.

I like the idea mentioned before about cost reductions going into effect if the server experiences many losses in a short time. After about 3 consecutive last place finishes or 5 consecutive non-first place finishes; a reduction of about 100 gems a week should go into effect.
This will addressed “locked” tiers (particularly in NA) and will encourage balancing from people looking for a change of scenery; while making the “winning” server having to make a VERY compelling argument as to why more currency should be spent in their direction.

The death of T1 PPT play (an obituary)

in WvW

Posted by: Chris.3290

Chris.3290

The clear solution is for an Arena-Net supported GvG format to be released (perhaps with the much rumored 2015 expansion??) to form the middle ground for guild focused players to get the competition they have been looking for.

This change would turn WvW into purely PPT and the mode’s participants would shuffle greatly.

With guild-based combatants finally having a format of their own, arguments of fights vs PPT would evaporate and PPT would truly become the determinator again.

In imbalanced matchups PPT is a pointless metric. The lower coverage servers concentrate on improving quality which leads to them dragging down the PPT server when coverage is even. If a lower server gains in quantity they inevitably attract people looking for an easy ride and the cycle starts over again.
