Engi community is bitter as kitten.
~20 stacks of might + burning is whats a problem. Necros can get instant 10 stacks of might + 3 battle and have 13 stacks before they lay their conditions. Or add a couple Life Blasts for 15 stacks. But nobody says anything about that. It’s because Necro doesn’t have burning. Engis get every condition and 20 stacks of might + 25 corruption chages = annihilation.
Pretty much never I highly doubt Gw2’s pvp viewership will come anywhere close to sc2 or league. This is subjective but GW2 pvp is not enjoyable to watch also the rate updates come for pvp is way too slow. Esport was just a marketing gimmick
Really? I find GW2 PvP very enjoyable to watch. Especially if its a class/spec that I play. It’s not just spam all your abilities and hope for the best. The combat is fluid and constantly changing.
This is how I thought a life siphoning build would play out, too bad it fell short at the part where my face tanking ability prevented me from healing. On paper our healing seems fairly decent, but it’s honestly a trade off with how immobile it makes us to use it.
I feel the same way man. I’ve tried regen/siphon builds on my Necro and they just fall short. Meanwhile going up against a regen ranger with overpowered regeneration as a Necro without Corrupt Boon or Spinal Shivers is just a losing battle. You know it when you’re at 50% health with heal on cooldown and hes at 3/4 hp just with regen. Lich Form or bust in my opinion.
I personally think 8 vs 8 is too large. 6v6 or 7v7 would be better in my opinion. With less people you don’t have to be a bunker to buy some time for your team to show up when defending. In 8v8 if you have 3-4 people coming up to you then you better run.
The good thing about this build is you can pick up fear duration + fear damage traits. You can also pick up both spectral cd reduction + life force on use traits. I personally use 0/30/10/0/30.
All I have to say is there are 2 Necros in game that have Greatsword and Hammer. I’m sure in the future we will be able to use a GS. Having more weapons is a lot of fun. Which is why Necro and Warrior are my most favorite classes.
This is a joke well necros are supper high dps, minion necros are almost unkillable without 2 players one to kill necro, and one to kite pets. One of the best melee in the game the most aoe in the game and involarability doesnt stop dot dmg so it doesnt matter if your enemy has it and your heal eats conditions. Tied for highest hp class in the game and you have your class ability that give you an extra health bar and high dmg abilities.
Tied with Warrior for highest HP in game. Almost tied with Warrior in lowest ranking class in PvP. Ele has lowest health in the game, but highest in rank. Necro and Warrior have one F1 key. Ele and Mesmer have F1, F2, F3, F4 keys. More tools > armor/health/invulen/whateverthekitten.
I didn’t play Necro in GW1. But it sounds like GW2 Mesmer clones work the way GW1 Necro minions worked. Very easy to summon, could have many of them, sacrifice for buffs/damage.
I use healing surge or mending. I usually pick up the 10 pt trait in the power tree that removes immobile, cipple, and chill when using a heal.
I thought Eles were the Jack of All Trades? Warriors are Jacked on All Traits (pvp).

Couple questions 1) Would you consider dagger OH to be a preference? It seems to me this build would work just as well with focus 2) I’m skeptical about Fury on DS as a means to increase dagger burst because it forces you to put DS on cooldown when it is often very needed later as one of our survivability options… thoughts?
Appreciate you taking the time to put together this guide!
Khalifa mentions in BoC that he encourages using DS aggressively and using it often. I use it pretty much right off cooldown for the retaliation + stability (for me). Obviously there wil be times when you get caught with your pants down and you’re waiting a few more seconds for DS to come up while you’re getting shattered by a Mesmer. I personally pop SWalk as soon as I see a Mes lay down their Temporal Curtain. When I get pulled I hit Walk again and teleport away from the clones + Blurred Frenzy. If you just use DS as a secondary life pool for when you’re low on health and losing, then you’re already dead.
Your burst is weak on that build, you have no fury access. On any bursting Necro build you NEED 15 in curses. Of course, my opinion doesn’t matter I suppose.
Without going 15 in curses and without any precision runes I drop down to 35% crit. With Runes of the Eagle I hit about 40% crit which is still very good. I pick up 5% increases damage when over 50% LF as well as more effective health with a higher LF pool, and increased survivability through protection boon. I feel like dropping weakness on your foe, forcing stun breaks, using Dark Pact, and dropping WoS is too much of a one trick show. I wanted to try and get away from that. I also get higher crit damage filling out 30 points in SR, and 5 seconds of stability instead of 5 seconds of fury.
Hey dude I started running 30/0/10/0/30 picking up foot in grave, 3%LF on marks and 20% spectral cd. I’m using SArmor, SWall, SWalk. I think well of suffering is too easy to avoid and now my burst is on cd and I’m screwed. What are your thoughts on this?
I’m currently using d/d 30/0/10/0/30 picking up 20% lower spectral cd + SA at 50% hp. My utilities are SArmor, SWall, and SWalk. I’m using runes of Earth for a chance to gain protection on hit, as well as projectile protection at 20% hp. I’m thinking about switching from d/d to a/f, but ill have to do some testing on that. I really like having many sources of protection. I can’t burst people down in a Dark Pact + Well combo, but I still have good damage output when the target drops below 50%, as well as some survivability. I really like the trait that increases Spectral duration + grants LF, but I don’t want to sacrifice points anywhere else to get there. I have yet to try this build in a tournament. I’ve been using Khalifa’s build for tournies, and that works for me, but I feel too squishy with low LF gain and only protection at 50% hp.
Learn to shroud stomp. It takes practice, but try to do it everytime you stomp. I use foot in the grave and its a godsend to have stability on a 10 sec cd
Dark Path should have a detonate for teleport type option. You fire it, doesn’t look like its going to catch your target, so you detonate and it teleports you to the location. This would give us an actual escape tool, as well as help us catch the slipperier classes. Sort of like the Thief underwater skill Ink Shot. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ink_Shot
I just started playing an Engineer and I just noticed untraited Engineers tool kit shield block is on a 20 second cd. Warrior shield block is on 30 second cd. Engineer also has Magnetic Shield which is on a 30 second cd, but reflects projectiles untraited, as well as has a pushback. Nobody plays Warrior. They should just remove it from the game.
I see lots of Engis in pvp lately. I decided to shelf my Warrior and try out Engineer. I wish I had done it sooner because Warrior is frustrating to play, and Engi is very rewarding.
If you can’t beat them, join them. Once Anet sees that suddenly everyone is an Ele and other classes have been abandon, maybe we will get a change?
Correct. All classes are not perfectly balanced, and some are stronger than others. Especially Ele on Spirit Watch. Mesmer is very powerful too. Warrior is very easy to dodge, and easy to kill sadly. But they can still do good damage and set up stuns for their team mates. You just have to play around with traits, weapons, accessories, stats, runes, and sigils to find what works for you. The game is still very new, and not everything has been tried yet. You might find something very powerful, but it won’t be so powerful that you will dominate everybody you fight. It’s much harder to kill 2 vs 1 in this game than it is in other MMOs where players have stronger armor than others.
Hello everyone. Lately I’ve failed every time I try to stop a stomp using Well of Suffering followed by Staff 4 blast finisher. Does blind not work to stop stomps? Or is the blind just not applying fast enough? I’ve failed about 10 times now.
Steal, CnD, Backstab, Heartseeker spam. Fartseeker and Backstab have both been nerfed already. You just have to ride it out, and let the Thief waste their initiative. IMO Steal is the worst. 6k crits and its very hard to dodge.
There are glory vendors which give you chests. You can get chests from tournament wins which have better looking gear. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_reward . None of the gear gives you a stat boost over someone else. This makes it so the game is more about skill. Why are you joining empty games?
so how are you landing mace auto attacks exactly?
GS 4, GS 5, Bulls Charge probably. I’ve been using mace/shield + GS recently and I will definitely try this build. It can be difficult to catch the more slippery classes, but you have to use GS mobility and 5 second swap aggressively to stick to your target. It’s very easy to want to waste your shield bash and skull crack out of frustration.
Necro should have access to burning. I mean there are STDs that cause burning o.O
IMO Rune of Dwayna is better than Vampirism. Especially if you’re going down Blood Magic. I’m doing an experimental pvp D/D Siphon build focusing on damage first, healing second. I trait 30/0/10/15/15. I get Regen at 90% health. Protection at 50% health, 20% reduction to Spectral abilities. I use Spectral Armor for another 50% health + stun break. Not worth it untraited with a 90 second cd. Siphon on hit. 50% increase in Siphon. Parasitic Bond, and Death into Life. I’m using Knight’s Amulet with Cleric Jewel (27.8khp, and 533 healing). Using Sigil of Blood on main hand, Bloodlust on offhand. Sigil of Fire on Staff. I could use Blood or Leeching if I wanted to. Dagger offhand is not the best choice for “healing”, but it keeps me alive better than focus and horn. It will make you better at 1v1. But still extremely hard to 2v1 as a Necro.

Copenhagen and Ezeriel’s posts are off-base, please don’t let them discourage you. Necros can do really well in dungeons, including CoE. Doing well in dungeons is based more on player skill and a sensible build than which class you are.
CoE is one of my favorite dungeons – I’m currently running a healing build, and when everyone stacks up for the golems or alpha I can mass heal the party with well of blood, or use signet of undeath to res the multiple people who inevitably go down on one of the golem charges. If everyone’s kiting sugject alpha, then signet of the undeath is one of the few ways to successfully res someone. (Not as relevant to the core of the dungeon, but flesh worm also works really well to get through the laser beams.)
Whether you’re a necro or some other class, you’ll run into stupid groups. Sometimes these groups will think that all necros suck in dungeons, sometimes they’ll think the only way to kill Troll in AC is to lure him to Kholer and sit out of combat for 10 minutes. If you are able to find this out before the dungeon run starts, be happy that you avoided such a group.
My post was not meant to discourage. I love my Necro and play it everyday in PvE and PvP. Necro performs well in every dungeon, it’s just that we offer very little in group utility. I don’t understand why we were designed like this in a party/group based game.
Edit: One thing I will add. Necromancers probably have the most viable builds in every aspect of the game. Minions, Condi, Hybrid, Power, Wells, Syphon, Bunker, etc.
(edited by Copenhagen.7015)
Interesting that this became a discussion about engi v. necro difficulty.
Anyway, Necro in all of its forms has a higher skill floor than engi, but the HGH engi and the viable necro builds both have high skill caps. I suppose it is a subjective debate with regards to this aspect of the discussion.
What can be said about Necro relative to other classes is that their stun breaks are trash, they have no access to blocking, invulnerable, vigor, stealth, stun/daze (other than the minion elite which is not as good as plague or lich and warhorn 4 which is arguably the worst off hand for a necro regardless of if they are power or condi)or knock back (except when in Lich). That is a heavy price to pay for the utility of shroud. The class cannot do damage in any form as well as other classes, can’t support as well as other classes, can’t bunker as well as other classes, has no mobility, and if it is trained and chain CC’d can’t survive and can’t escape.
It isn’t that Necro is awful, infact it has better versatility than most classes. For a Necro to be truly effective in any role, though, it needs team support. All of the other classes have better ways to be self sufficient and easier ways to play.
I would submit that the biggest problem with necro is that it is balanced around an assumption of passive damage from minions that no competent player is really using in any serious way, where other classes (I’m looking at Mesmer in particular) didn’t get the same treatment with respect to their ability to generate passive damage.
Warrior has block, immunity, vigor, stability, mobility, escapability(lol), stun/daze, and stun breaks. But Warrior is the worst class in pvp.
(edited by Copenhagen.7015)
Pretty much what Taril said. Why take a Necro when you can get better damage from a Warrior. Why take a Necro when we offer no group buffs besides 3 seconds (lol )of protection. Necro damage is medium-good, survivability is medium-good, utilitiy is low. We offer condition removal, but then again, other classes can do that too. Also conditions don’t do any damage to objects, and if you have more than one Necro doing conditions, you’re losing damage because of the bleed cap.
Just play a few matches and you will get it without even trying specifically for it. Rerroll, no need to be nasty. PvP needs all the players it can get.
Dagger offhand is not just for condition builds. It’s a great supplement to a main hand dagger even for a power build. If you’re using a well build and you take Well of Blood, the condi transfer from dagger off hand is wonderful.
Legendary trident matches perfectly. Sadly its a friggin trident.
This happened to me recently too. It was a 2 v 1 defend and a thief comes up out of the blue while i’m already pretty much dead and starts heartseeking his heart out. I go down. Thief says “noob”
Thief says “noob”
Thief says “noob”
I thought it was very strange and told him the game has an age restriction. Then proceeded to kill him multiple times the next game.
On last SOTG our great devs say big NO to legendarys in pvp…
I’m sorry I heard completely different in the SOTG. Pretty sure they said legendaries are already available for pvp, you just can’t view them in the locker.
Glory boosters will not rank you up faster.
Thank you for the wonderful build Khalifa. My guild just recently started doing tournaments, so I decided to try your setup, and it’s fantastic. It does take some practice like you said, and it works great with DS. Fearing to get behind for that 10% damage increase, and Lich Form pounding 3-4k crits on groups of enemies from a distance is tons of fun. I was reluctant to use dagger offhand but it really does work work. My team won 6 free tournies in a row this morning, and it’s the best we have ever done. The only traits ive changed are Spiteful Spirit to Reapers Might, and Spiteful Makrs to Chill of Death. Chill of Death is perfect because it gives you that boon removal when you really need it to get the kill, and you don’t have a focus to do it.
Glad you like it, and the most updated version of the build is exactly what you said. I switched spiteful spirit to reaper’s might and spiteful marks to chill of death. After the patch those two will yield you much more overall damage. I also changed sigil of rage to sigil of air.
Is Sigil of Air a better choice than Sigil of Fire. I remember reading the damage is very close on a single target, but you obviously get AOE with Fire.
Edit. Just did some tests on the target golems, and the damage is almost exactly the same.

Minions work very well as damage dealers and cannon fodder. That is the standard MM spec for axe/focus, so you should do fine. Do not worry about trying to keep your minions alive with healing. Either they take very little damage, or they get one shot by massive aoe. Although MM works better in spvp, it still works in dungeons. If you run 20/0/30/20/0 and pick up the Death Nova trait, you get a poison combo field which you can blast finish for aoe weakness. IMO weakness is very important for minimizing damage taken in dungeons. I believe knights gear works best with axe/focus + minions.
I know you said you want to avoid Minions, but have you tried them? I tried every trait allocation, weapon, stat, and rune combinations except for Minions. But it turns out that a Minion build is pretty bad kitten I stayed away because people said Minion AI sucked and that it’s not viable. They provide healing, utility, body blocking of projectiles, confusion among enemies, condition removal (traited), boon removal (traited), and damage (30% more traited). If you like bunker, Minions are a good bet. More popular minion builds use axe/focus + staff, but I can’t function with the axe, so I run scepter/dagger + staff. 0/30/20/20/0. Using runes of the Undead + Rabid accessory. It is not fail as you may have been led to believe. You may be pleasantly surprised. Try it in pve, do a few DEs, maybe a few dungeons to just get familiar with the minions. Then jump into the mists : )
Let Arcing Slice transfer 3 conditions from you to the target. There I fixed 2 problems at one time.
Horrible looking armor and weapons, I can’t salvage rares for Ectos, and I’d rather run CoF, CoE, AC, and Fractals.
a Condi Warrior
This is an oxymoron.
But it shouldn’t be. Why even give Warriors weapons that utilize conditions if they’re just going to be useless?
The only real burst Necro has is Well of Suffering + BiP + axe 2 or dagger 2. or hope for a Life Blast crit. I personally think axe is absolutely junk. It has sub par damage, and it only has a single target auto attack. Warrior’s does twice as much damage at twice the speed while hitting multiple targets. Lich Form damage is just barely better than dagger auto attack damage, and that is a problem to me. I love my Necro, but you won’t kill as fast as a Warrior. I’d love to see a video though.
Poor Warriors. If they changed the Greatsword Burst ability to something worth a kitten maybe the Meta would change in Warrior’s favor. Also Tactics and Defense minor traits are crap with the exception of Adrenal Health. Warriors don’t have any access to protection. Why?
So the consensus generally accepts the following
Top: Elementalist
Bottom: Warrior
I think Necro is evenly matched with Warrior at the bottom.
I hit level 10 and decided it wasn’t worth the time to pvp right now. When I finish my next legendary it might be. But for all the time invested to rank up, you don’t get anything you can use in the rest of the game. No gold, no karma, no laurels, no skins, no emotes, no thank you.
Just did this path today. We all noticed she was vanishing every 50% instead of every 45 seconds. Also getting stoned during spark phase. Sure enough I find this thread with the same problems. Waste of 3 hours.
It’s way easier to avoid damage from a Norn Warrior then it is an Asura Warrior. You can see the Norn’s attacks coming from a mile away, but it’s almost impossible to see what the Asura is doing unless you’ve actually played one. I’m sure this is true with all classes. How can you interrupt and dodge if you can’t even see what the heck they’re doing.
