Sigils and utilities for roaming S/D

Title says it all; I would like to try s/d for wvw roaming with offset sb.
All the builds i have found are for spvp or tpvp so i imagine sigils and
utilities are not optimal for that kind of playstyle.
Should i still go with fire/force and fire for sb or bloodlust/perception?
My current skills are signet of shadows, sr and roll for initiative, so i’m not quite sure
wether to exchange roll for shadowstep or shadowtrap. Additionally signet of shadows’
runspeed boost is really nice; will i miss it greatly if i take something else?

Last question: for the typical s/d duelist is the normal gear full zerk or a mixture from zerk and valk? In full zerk gear i’d sit on ~15k hp.

You don’t need full zerk to be viable. A mix with knights for your warrior is completely fine and since you are new to this dungeon probably better for survival.
Ele and mes are pretty useful too, so just use what you are comfortable with.
60-90 minutes are normal for a run with avarage pugs and you will get used to it.
I spent the past 4 days gathering my 1380 tokens for the whole set and it wasn’t that bad.

Normally you want to focus the risen elementalists and mages first, then illusionists and the rangers last. Stay ranged at lupi and dodge his shadowstep and don’t forget
to grab some invuln. or stability for his dome in phase 3. Most groups that fail
will do at this boss.

edit: By “lots” i mean way more than about any other mmo. So, yea…

So, nope. Not permanent.

Edit: sorry thought you meant the city itself. But since Dragonball and

Precursor for achievement points… lol ruins the prestige. People just want easy legendaries. These posts are getting tiring.

No, people just want a fair chance for precursors. Achievement points
are the fairest system imho. It is something you can work towards
and if this system means that every account gets one precursor/lifetime
then that doesn’t mean everyone will have a legendary.
Every other compenent neccessary to craft a legendary weapon will
stay the same. Only the most unfair and RNG based part
will be removed. I personally have just over 5k points and acquiring 3k more will take a lot of time but i think that is more than fair.

Most of the people who don’t like this idea are either playing the market and
fearing some of their precious gold will be lost due to speculating
or players who already have a legendary and just dont want to grant others the same
for whatever reason. I just assume they feel special for having something that
others don’t, which is just pathetic.

Anyone else feel like the textures look pretty bad on the gloves and stuff? Like it seems really faded and low quality compared to the chest. :/

Maybe thats the way fire stuff usually looks. I dunno. lol

The only “new” gear in this picture are helmet gloves and shoulders. The rest
is cof.

I just think fire+black stuff = a 12 year old’s idea of cool.

Then there must be a LOT of 12 year old kids playing this game, because half the people I see are wearing CoF armor with Abyss Dye.

That’s the point. I personally don’t know any mature players who like this
style of gear. Another problem with this is that it kind of lessens
the armor diversity among players. If so much of the high end armor
looks this way then many people will wear it, be it the one or the other set.

The Jade weapons were a step in the right direction as they were mainly green and golden with the occasional splash of silver. The only other green weapons
in the game that i know of are priory.

Edit: I can understand Anet wants to cater to the majority of the playerbase
and that seems to be the kids or at least those who think black with flames looks
“cool”.

A couple of holographic walls are one thing, this looks like a bug though. Or just mean. No wonder people are asking for portals. I’m not doing this JP any more.

You don’t need to get there to complete the JP, just for the
dive master achievement. Geez, people get kitten over the strangest things…

the only thing that you actualy need dodging is the teleport ( wich is telegraphed) so ….. im confused on where is the dificullty ??

the teleport is telegraphed but cannot be dodged, only blocked or
in case you use blind, with a low chance missed. the lightning she throws at the group
however can be dodged and it is even telegraphed with an obvious spinning
animation.

Just to point out, my pug team was all over the place, and we never died. It was much harder, since the red circles filled the floor. But even with this, we beat the end boss in under 15 minutes.

The points you stress are good. Mine is: Knowing game mechanics keeps you alive.

Unless you stand still (or have virtually no vitality) you won’t die from the fire. You should be fully able to dodge/move away from it even if taking a hit or two.

Thats the big problem with that fight though, yeah one, two hits, not a problem. I can even survive many more than that. But first of all being on a class with no vigor means I have pretty much no reliable dodge, second it’s not the actual damage of the shots, it’s the godawfully long amount of time this ridiculous spamfest goes on. There’s absolutely no need for it to go on that long. I know exactly the part the OP is talking about because that’s the same part that has prevented me from completing this dungeon. Yes I could prob get on my guardian like everyone else and roll through it, but I’m sick of always having to fall back to the guard just to do content. The rest of this dungeon is amazing and I love it, but I’m not ever going to see the end of it and I hope they learned something from this. The molten dungeon was done brilliantly I just wish they applied that same thought and planning to the last boss in this one. 1 shot shennannigans do not equate to a fun, challenging time.

Everyone stack on a designated “lead runner” and run clockwise. Don’t cut the edges though. Keep swiftness up and you won’t have any problems at all. I have yet
to die to the barrages with this method.
You can’t just use the same tactic over and over again, expecting it
to magically work one time.

The achievements don’t really bother me, but the storyline does.

Last Saturday, our guild did a six-group run into the new dungeon. 30 players started, and after 4 hours, 10 of them finished. If the dungeon is a required portion of the story, then that potentially locks out 2/3 of our guild.

This bothers me alittle bit. I can see that the current story is different in
a sense that some of it is at the end of a dungeon but “locking people out”?
I don’t think so. Max level has always been a level playingfield, ascended aside
so the only thing differentiating your guildmembers from those, that completed
the dungeon is the actual player and not the game.
I won’t comment on uplevelled characters but that’s what many people
mean when they give you the usual l2p answer.

The way the dungeon is connected to the story surely is a matter of taste.
I personally see nothing wrong with the fact that some charcters are just not
up to the task of catching Mai and so Kiel has to do the job. It’s not like this is
blocking your progression in the overall story arch.

To use your own analogy, the current story asks players to perform a very difficult task that not many players can’t complete, like killing 250,000 foes in WvW, in order reach the end. That’s a new thing for this game, and its something that seems to violate the designers’ publicly-stated design philosophy.

Analogies are never perfect, but this one still feels pretty solid.

Both the dungeon and the WvW achievement are things that many players can’t complete. If you have trouble understanding that, then please substitute another difficult achievement, like “Personal Space” or “Faster Than Light.”

The WvW achievement is time consuming at best and has nothing to do with skill.
The dungeon on the other hand can be completed in under an hour, compared to like,
what was it? 9 years for the yakslapper? I would compare it to the Mad King’s Clocktower, if that thing had an achievement ( i missed out on halloween last year).
From what i have heard it also was short but skill based.

Who needs pugs when you can solo the dungeon?

Are you saying that capturing Mai is the same as knowing that someone else captured her? Because personally, I would rather capture her myself. That difference between experiencing the story and hearing about it is what I imagine when I hear someone talk about “missing out on the story”.

I was referring to this post. No need to be rude, especially if you can’t remember what you wrote yourself.

I agree, a proper toned down story version of this dungeon without achievements and
reward would have been nice but that’s the way it is now.

It also looks like you agree that this was a poor design decision. That’s why I’m speaking up. And I hope it’s a mistake that ArenaNet doesn’t make in the future.

I indeed do agree with you on this, but i also realise that there is no point in complaining about the current content. That’s why i told you to just suck it up and improve your playstyle. “L2P” really gets old fast, so i hope they do it
differently for future updates and people like you won’t have to come
to the forums crying that they can’t beat a dungeon that requires actual thinking.
For now though, l2p. The dungeon is fine, if you can’t beat it, it’s your own fault
for not learning from your mistakes.

How is it pvp in the puzzle when there are so many areas that allow one side to freely attack the other until they reach the ledge/area that the attackers are on?

It isn’t a jump puzzle it’s a free kill machine.

Having the cache in there is badly thought out, it makes me want to participate in wvw even less than I did before, knowing that at any given chance, people who call themselves ‘dedicated pvpers’ will resort to just camping people who can’t fight back.

Scrap wvw, it’s trash.

The design philosophy behind this JP was to let small groups of players hold chokepoints against a far larger amount of enemies. Working as intended.
That you need to complete this for an exlcusively timed achievement
however, was not a smart decision.

Does that really sound like a game you want to play? Judging from the other comments I’ve read here, I don’t think anyone else wants to play it either.

You make it sound as if that was the way it’s meant to be story wise.
No, it’s not but i was just referring to your comment about storytelling and the fact that you can’t complete the dungeon.
If you want to experience the complete story by beating Mai Trin and Horrik i suggest
you start reading some of the many many helpful posts containing strategies
for both bosses posted in this forums.

I agree, a proper toned down story version of this dungeon without achievements and
reward would have been nice but that’s the way it is now.
You better man up and start learning the mechanics.

Well, in your version of the story, your character was too weak to catch Mai Trin and had to rely on Kiel and the Lionguard to do that. I honestly don’t see the problem.
You can be the hero but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to earn
that status.

ah yes, i think conditions are only applied when she has 4 stacks or less.

She starts taking damage at 7 stacks.

i was talking about blind and yes i was really unclear there.
the duration of conditions is shortened the more stacks she has.
what i meant was that blinds stays a reasonable amount of time at 4 stacks and is actually useful, not just 0.5secs.

And if you somehow manage to get up to the diving goggles, you cannot tell which is the right direction for the jump. On my server, the pad is above a mountain top which blocks the whole jumping puzzle below from view. Several poor souls made the leap of faith in front of me in three different directions and always landed on solid rock. So where’s the water after all?

to your west. just run off, you don’t need to jump and you should land directly in the little pool of water.

While I haven’t solo’ed it, if you time a blind at the right time her spike attack will miss. I think it’s around when she raises her pistol (also pretty sure that she doesn’t tele if she misses, but don’t quote me on that).

She is defiant, which makes blinds 90% less effective, so that method is
extremely unreliable.

Good Job ANet, another awesome fail.

…which is woth 60s at the vendor for 5 minutes worth of work.
That’s better than any other JP in th game plus there are 3 normal coffers scattered throughout the the whole course. You don’t have to do it if you aren’t satisfied with the rewards.

-We don’t know when they will be returning

Make a decision based on that. No one can really give you a straight answer. And even if there was an answer to your question, no one in their right mind would tell it to you in a public domain such as a forum.

Even though these things all do return, it was said by Mr. Foreman that the skins we got the first time most likely won’t. I think they intend to bring skins for the weapon categories from world 1, but different ones.

Can only agree. Just did both, the grand chest and the divemaster and wow,
those pads are really messed up, especially the ones that give you a forward boost.
The double pad right before the platforms leading to the diving goggles are bugged as hell, launching people to their deaths front, right and center.

There is your first issue.. Mai should not be able to 1 hit you.. yes she hits hard but this spells one thing only to me.. your build isn’t specced right for it, not the mechanics of the fight being bad.

Secondly if your group is running round like headless chickens avoiding cannon fire then expect the floor to become covered.. if you could relatively grouped and running the same direction you might find it more evadable.. you say your a decent group that work well together, so this should not of been to harder task to work out.

Thirdly if someone is unfortunate to run out of evades or find they have one hit stats during cannon fire.. don’t try ressing them while its still happening.. keep yourself alive and wait it out… then res the fallen but even then you should by now be aware that Mai will target you while ressing so be ready to evade or just keep ressing then running then repeat… A guardian tanking here for a bit is more than enough to get the dead raised. Its only more difficult when there is only one of you alive and trying to ress everyone… but that comes back to other things mentioned previously.

Honestly this is the first dungeon they have brought in that isn’t just a faceroll exercise to suit the zerker brigade it does require some tactic, some group behaviour and yes some luck and patience… nothing wrong with that in my eyes especially when PUGS’s are more than capable of completing it so easily.

Key requirements I found for this pretty early on… decent stats, know when to use your evades, group buffs/heals and make sure you have some stability and / or condition removal .. forewarned is forearmed. And please don’t tell me your class or classes cant have all these things… my little necro has failed it only twice and one of those was in the first 15mins, the second was actually last night, late and the group were too tired to try Mai a second time…. but no biggy, having things easily face rolled over and over gets old very quickly.. THIS GAME NEEDS MORE DIFFICULTY NOT LESS!

Mai Trin can’t onehit anybody who is 80 and at least decently geared. I have almost no
additional vit or tough and she does about 4k with her teleportshot.

Secondly: Mai Train always targets the person furthest from her and she only performs
this attack right after her spin that shoots lightning at everyone.What i normally do
is run with axe/shield and when she does her spin i run away from the party,
then block her shot with my shield #5, the next one i mitigate with endure pain,
which gives enough time for shield #5 to recharge and block a third attack.
She does not prioritize ressing people.

Her other attacks do almost no damage. The real threat comes from bleeding
so cond removal is a must have. As a warrior you should take “shake it off”, which helps
greatly for reviving someone who is beaten on by her swashbuckling move, which stacks 25x bleed. Just pop it and they are all gone.

For the barrage phase i normally tell the group beforehand to
“stack on me and run clockwise”. Additionally someone should put a target marker
on your teams head runner for easy reference. Permaswiftness is key here,
otherwise you won’t be able to outrun the barrage.

The cannon attacks while Mai Trin and Horrik are on the players level does only
3k damage and adds a moderate burn, so nothing to worry about unless you
have low health.

Remember: When you know how a boss works you can easily abuse that.
Try to deliberately run away from her and block the portshots, as those are her strongest attack and the reason for abot 90% of wipes in this encounter.

Aka, this dungeon was made to put Zerker players back in line.

Stop making excuses. I’m full zerk, I did the instance in pugs full of fairly bad players. Gear isn’t the problem, the problem is that people (and you) are blaming outside factors for their failure instead of trying to use the tools available to them to beat what is in front of them.

This. I am a full zerk war and never had a problem with either the Mai Trin fight or Frizz. The key is movement and knowing the mechanics of the particular bossfight.
Stop assuming zerker=bad player. You can run every content in this game as full zerk
and succeed if you know what you are doing.

Hidden thief works without target. Used it the other day during the barrage phase
in the Mai Trin bossfight to prolong my sr stealth.

Why are people complaining again?
There are multiple stealth wells in the JP, for just this exact reason.
If you don’t want to fight, fine. Drink from the well and be invisible for 5 minutes.
Only downside is that you can’t use skills but since people don’t intend to fight that shouldn’t be a problem at all, right?

Please don’t crucify me, but why, instead of nerfing CoF, don’t boost other dungeons/paths rewards?

Most other dungeon paths have similar rewards its just that they take significantly longer..

What he meant was boosting the other paths so gold/time is the same as in cof,
not gold/run.

damage isn’t as important as cond remove and heal.
i recommend an engi for bleed removal and a support guard for
healing. two warriors with “shake it off” and endurance signet + endure pain
are more than enough damage wise. last spot is filled best with a
support elementalist. was extremely easy and we had about 4 minutes left at the end

4 Pirates spawn with a 50% probability form every holo-projector in the open world.
Areas such as Fields of Ruin or Mt. Maelstrom have a high density of them and aren’t
farmed at all on most servers. Camping the Aetherblade chests is dull and in general not a good idea as many people will do the same.

So after spending a week on vacation, my girlfriend and I had a chance to check out the new Living Story. After a day of playing, I am fairly convinced this will be the first time in this game when I am unable to complete all the Living Story achievements.

What’s worse, is this will probably be the first time I don’t get to actually see the end of the story.

If you still need the dungeon and play on [EU] i can arrange something
and if you are as half decent as you say, then completing the dungeon
for you and your gf shouldn’t be a problem. The “faster than light” achievement
will depend on your skill of dodging golem pulls and i’m pretty sure the speedkill
might not be a good idea to try but i’m confident that completing the dungeon,
maybe with the personal space achievement, is nothing completely unrealistic,
even if the two of you turn out to be “not so pro” :P

It’s easy to assume a player with that low amount of skill hasn’t been carried through it yet.

You can. Stay on the lower one – dodge against the higher one. You won’t get hit by the lasers. What’s so difficult to understand?
Also: If the laser is right under you, dodge in the direction it came from, avoiding it completely and giving you enough time until the next one arrives.
If the laser hasn’t gotten to your crate, dodge in the direction it is going and run to the next crate.
It’s that easy. I did it many times, plenty of other people did it many times.
If you actually practiced instead of crying on the forums how “impossible” it is,
you would have beaten the dungeon long ago.

You can’t get hit by the cannons from Horrik. The others don’t count against you.

Learn to read. I wasn’t hit by any kind of cannon aoe or damaged by the fields
the shot leave behind. My point was that the system somehow didn’t recognize
the achievement as validated.

this fight is IMPOSSIBLE without at least 1 guard who brings in the proper team buffs. if you get into a team without a guard, just leave you won’t make it.

Wrong. Every class has access to stability. I’ve beaten it with a team of all light armor classes.

ya a 90s recharge time stability is enough!

My thief is level 30. The signature can’t go beyond a certain number of characters. Which means I need to change it sometime soon to what IS level 80. Also, you’re using P/D? If I recall, isn’t Pistol a horrible mainhand weapon?

And if i recall correctly, p/d is pretty viable, maybe not in tpvp but in spvp it absolutely wrecks everything i have encountered so far (except the occasional cond remove spam).
I completed the aetherblade dungeon many times with my thief and never had any problems, which just proves that it can be done, even with suboptimal
builds/group comp.
Also lvl30 isn’t enough to make statements about “stealth to undo targetting” as if it
was easy like that.

edit: also completed Frizz’ lab and the dungeon in general many times with my warrior
(no passive runspeed, no extra endurance regen, no swiftness from signet of rage).
Just normal 100% runspeed and 2 dodges – still never had a problem with a good group.

Hopefully the next Living Story will be a little less impossible for the casual player to finish. By all means have a really difficult instance for extra points but please don’t exclude a not inconsiderable segment of the players from finishing.

Casual doesn’t mean “bad players”, it just says, that they don’t spend a large amount of time in this game. You can be casual and still beat this dungeon easily.
You can’t however be a bad player and beat this dungeon easily.
And that’s fine!
