One day of GW2

My days mostly consist out of leveling alts, doing events/living story on level 80 characters, completing maps and RP.
And sometimes (okay, hardly.) do wvwvw, dungeons or pvp. (I would love to do more dungeons, but I really dislike pugs as I often don’t know the ‘routine’ and a lot of these pugs just don’t explain even if you ask and call you names instead >.> )

Female human greatsword holding stance

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Curae.1837

Curae.1837

The way the character stands looks like the correct stance. However on a much closer inspection, it is rather a beginner trying to copy the stance.
-back isn’t straight, she leans forward a bit.
-elbow sticks out (which is like a big red target to hit for an experienced swordman)
-Front foot isn’t exactly straight (her knee looks a bit painful tbh)
-sword angle is wrong because she holds her arms wrong
-the edge of the blade points to the ground instead of at the opponent

Is it nitpicky? -Yes.
Is it a correct swordstance? -It’s an attempt.

Female human greatsword holding stance

I am. It’s blade is roughly . . . thirty-five or so inches long (I may be longer by an inch) and it’s not thick really – less than a quarter-inch for most of it. I haven’t weighed it yet but the length of the blade is what makes it hard for me to really hold out for very long.

I can’t speak for balance so much, but personally . . . I can’t really use it. My arms are not ‘built’ for that yet, and I’m decidedly untrained in how to really hold or work with it. Most of the problem is the weight is focused near the grip but the length means I still have to watch an extra eight inches or so of blade and that messes me up more.

The balance point sounds good actually, lenght of the blade doesn’t seem outrageous either. And well, wielding swords mostly takes on the underarms from moving the sword around using your wrist, which is not a movement often made (with something heavy in your hands), so it can take quite some getting used to.

Right now, it’s waiting for me to give it a cleaning and it’ll probably be used as a costume piece. I’ll carry my wooden sword if I really want to use something or get practice. I’ve thought about having a big hand-and-half sword but after trying to hold one and then seeing how I’d have to carry it? No thank you.

Uncertain what you mean by ‘how I’d have to carry it’. You mean in battle? Because there are a lot of guard-stances. And if not in battle you can wear it on your side for ‘quick-draw’ or on your back for ‘travel’.

Most of this is just me going “yes, I know what swords usually weigh and have looked into a little casually on how they’re handled”. Seeing someone hold a sword off to the side like that seems plausible if they’re having to be moving often or moving with speed – it keeps it out of the way

It is plausible although I personally dislike the animation, but hey, that’s why I have a keybind to stow my weapon. ^^

Okay I see people here saying greatswords are really heavy and big lumps of metal. If you’re talking about surfboards with a grip. Yes.
If not: greatswords weigh approx 2 to 2.5kg with about half the weight in the grip/crossguard/pommel. So no, they are not heavy. Carrieng an unwieldy, heavy weapon into battle is like buying a ticket to a certain death.

I don’t like the stance myself, but I can live with it.

To the people saying “oh, it’s too heavy for my character to just lift it up in the air because it’s so heavy. So she must wear it to the side.”
I am just going to point you to the picture below that cancels that whole argument out.
(on a sidenote, get your greasy fingers off that blade.)

EDIT:

Greatswords shouldn’t be weighing a few hundred pounds of course. Historically, they were considered heavy and impractical if they went over 8 pounds.

And historically, they weren’t necessarily used for the edge but for the point. Sort of like a spear with a potential cutting edge along the blade . . .

But that’s not what people expect so that’s not what we get. Also, I have a long rapier with a basket hilt I got when I thought it’d be a cool thing to add to my ren faire outfit. It’s pretty heavy to hold out at arm’s length let alone to swing it. I’m not sure on the weight, want to say about five points but not any more than ten.

Unless females have really brawny arms I don’t expect them to be swinging a big hunk of iron vaguely resembling a sword like Cloud Strife does.

If your sword’s balance point is incorrect it will be unwieldy and difficult to swing around, a sword should be an extension of your arm. Also I assume you are talking about a onehanded sword?
They are not much lighter than twohanded swords and require more strenght to wield as you carry the blade with one hand instead of spreading the weight over two hands.

I also noticed that the realistic weapons we have ingame, as in the normal iron sword/greatsword… They have these black stains on them as if someone has been smudging their greasy fingers all over the blade and never bothered to clean it with some oil.
Would love to have a clean blade that looks like my character has been taking proper care of it.

I wouldn’t mind it if it were added, as long as there are no big ingame benefits to being married.
Having benefits isn’t a problem imo, but let them be small things. An event you can trigger with your spouse once a day or something. Nothing major, but something fun and ‘special’ to do. Hell, let it be open world for all I care.

In a previous game I played there was a small daily quest as well for married couples. Main benefit though was marrieng your best friend to keep the creepy guys who started hitting on your avatar at bay. (Fortunately not run into anyone like that on gw2 )

I don’t mind the big fantasy-unusable weapons. Some do look cool and some of my characters do use them. But I also would love to have more realistic options.
I have a hard time finding realistic-ish weapons I like ingame, and am working kitten getting Infinite Light (as it’s the only sword-skin I really like).
That the weapons are too big, as in that onehanded swords have the size of longswords in real – I don’t mind. The weapons would be very small otherwise, and hardly visible for even yourself. For me being realistic and looking realistic can be seperated. Is Bonetti’s Rapier realistic? No. As others pointed out it’s too long. But does it look realistic? It does imo. It’s sleek and not over the top. It looks like an actual weapon.

I see some people saying that realistic weapons are boring, and I beg to differ. Maybe some of them are somewhat boring and ‘normal’. But there have been plenty of beautiful and unusual weapons that set themselves apart quite a bit.

Baskethilted Scottish broadsword
Federschwert, or fencing sword. Mostly used for training.
Cavalry officer’s sword
Sickle sword of Mesopotamia
German boar sword, for boar hunting
French smallsword
Scottish highlander sword
Infantry officer’s sabre inlaid with blue and gilt

And that’s without even starting about Chinese, Japanese and Indian swords.
There is a lot of diversity in realistic swords alone, and I don’t see why they can’t live alongside of the big fantasy-weapons we already have ingame.

Big Improvment

I hardly ever post about updates, I can’t recall I ever did about S1, and although I enjoyed it, it hardly felt like a real story and I wasn’t invested in it.
Start of S2 blew my mind.

First of all just the amount of things we got in terms of story, instances, explorable area, and the fact that it’s repeatable.
I love the dialogue around the village where two npc’s talk about ‘that crazy sylvari who barely left her home’, it got me thinking right away of scarlett, although I dislike the character in general, it’s nice to get to know a bit more about her.

The new area is awesome. I like the fact that it’s not a very big zone, so it’s easy to get around, you get to explore all the nooks and crannies without too much trouble. And the new achievements for exploring the place are great! (I for one love exploring and think achievements related to it are great. Still looking for the last couple of coins!)

The sandstorm adds a great dynamic to the place, as well as that the chests can only be found at that moment.

During the story instances I am mostly greatful for one thing: The bloody npc’s don’t die.
When Braham got to the point that he should be dead he just stopped fighting for a while, looked slightly confused, regenerated some health and fought on. I was really glad to see this, there is hardly anything more frustrating than having to continuously scrape your npc allies of the floor.

I do think the relationship between Kasmeer and Marjory is a bit too emphasized, but ah well.
And my weapon will not add stacks of condition damage/bloodlust/etc when killing enemies during the story instances. Which does make me a bit sad. (But I have submitted a bug report. Hope it can be fixed.)

Overall, I am really enjoying the content, it’s wonderful and can’t wait to see what will be next!

EDIT: And the music! Good grief I love the music from this update!

Armor how it covered through the ages

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Curae.1837

Curae.1837

(I am just going to talk about the medieval armor, because I know more about that than the other armor types. Also I am happy with the armor ingame, but I would like to see certain things more or less often.)

While certainly someone doesn’t need full plate armor to be effective, it does help save you from different attacks. Besides that, one would not just wear plate armor, but below that chainmail and layers of woolen cloth, which would also help fencing off any projectiles piercing through their armor.

The thing with skimpy armor is, that it is often covering for the male counterpart (examples below this paragraph). Or the holes and gaps are in places where they serve no purpose other than ‘looking cool.’
If there is a gap between the breast area and the stomach, understandable. It will give a greater mobility because now you can bend your midrif without trouble.
However there is no reason why I should go into battle with my stomach exposed or with bare legs while my male ally next to me wears the same armor, but is fully covered.
Most glaring examples:
Phalanx set Female Male
Arah Female Male

While they have shown to also make really cool armor that is even across both genders like:
Gladiator Female Male
Human tier 3 Female Male

I am not neccessarily dissapointed in the armor in the game – actually I like the variety and the fact there is both skimpy and not skimpy armor. (hell my norn uses cultural tier 2 heavy armor which hardly covers anything, but it looks cool.)
I just wish there were more options to wear covering armor as a female character without special boob-cutouts or random open parts exposing skin. Especially if the male counterpart is fully covered. (Which has been the case with nearly every set appearing in the gemstore lately.)

Also full plate armor is heavy in itself, but it is spread across the body which evens out the weight. So although it would slow you down a bit, it’s not enough to make a major difference – otherwise people really wouldn’t wear it.

Edit: fixed not working links.

are you unhappy with armor customization?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Curae.1837

Curae.1837

Looking at the variety of armor we can choose from, I am quite happy. If I want a character to show some skin, I can. If I want my (female) character to be fully clothed/armored, there are options for that too. If I want a healthy combination of both, that is also possible.
We can hide gloves, helmet, pauldrons and backpieces.

Is more customization good? Yes, of course yes. I per example would love to be able to choose if my gloves or boots will go over the pants/shirt or not. But overall; I am quite happy with the armor and customization options we have!

Very interesting subject!

I have some questions concerning concept-art.

1. As concept art mostly seems to be made on the computer, is it actively discouraged to use traditional media, or is it rather a choice that most concept artists make?

2. Are there specific artists who focus on environments, on characters, armor, etc? Or are most all-round and can practically do anything?

(and to add to question 8 from Viking Jorun)
3. What is a recommended size for a portfolio when applying for a job as concept artist, and should you rather show 1 thing(only environments, only characters, etc) or many different things?

4. Is it wise to show research and sketches next to finished works in a portfolio when applying for a job as concept artist?

I used to play another mmo, during the beta weekends I would drop whatever I was doing in that game and go play gw2.
I told my friends there that I would still play this game alongside of gw2.

Once gw2 was released I played only this for 2 weeks, then figured I should still play the other game too.

It started with taking a solid minute to figure out why my skills stopped working. – I was out of mana.

I couldn’t find my heal skill, got confused when I died right away instead of being able to rally and forgot I had such a thing as a flying mount to get out of sticky situations.

I couldn’t dodge or attack and move at the same time – resulting in getting into a fight with a healer in an instance because I kept running around the boss…

After logging in 2 more times while trying to enjoy the game I just gave up and dropped my account info to a friend asked her to divide the stuff I have between friends – I never logged in there again.

I have tried different mmo’s since, just for the hell of it or when I needed a break. But it never got me as much as this game.
Not having to target, being able to dodge and rally, not having to worry about carrieng over 9000 potions around. Being able to choose how my gear looks through transmutation, no endless grinding just to keep up with the rest…

There are many, many more reasons why I love this game – too many to list them all.
There are obviously parts that ‘could’ be better, but that’s something that’s true for everything. But I have faith in that the core of this game will always be good… No Pay to Win, no waiting forever for a healer, many different viable builds and many different things to do ingame

What’re THE 5 things you love most about GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Curae.1837

Curae.1837

1. I love that there is no such thing as ‘killstealing’ – no badmouthing players for helping them out or need to party up before killing the same things.
2. weaponspecific skills – this opens up so many options already it’s amazing. I love playing around with different weapons – it also allows for many different builds and looks.
3. dynamic events – it’s awesome to see npc’s actively running to you and asking for help as well as thanking you when you have done the event with sometimes stories unfolding.
4. do whatever the hell you want – I can do jumping puzzles, explore, craft, grind, personal story, dynamic events, living story, dungeons, fractals… it doesn’t matter – it can help me level.
5. no gear treadmill – I can go and focus on other things without getting behind on anything else than some living story updates, some skins and achievement points, and I love that…

There are a ton of other things I love about this game, many already said in this thread… overall – I’ve never loved an mmo as much as I love gw2 ^^

Personally I would love to see the following things:

-Wardrobe system for pve-skins. (it has probably been mentioned a lot)
There is a lot of amazing armor in this game, yet at endgame you will have to pick something, or spend tons of gold/time/inventory-space in order to be able to switch between those skins.

-Minipet slot, but also – move them closer to the owner. Whenever I have a mini out, I can not see it as it is so far behind.

-More weapon options for classes. I am not certain if this is counted as horizontal progresssion – but I often pick weapons on how they look visually, also for roleplaying options. I would love to be able to use a weapon like Infinite Light on my elementalist…

-More emotes – and please… let us use chairs. Emotes could be rewards for doing different events or personal story steps, sitting on chairs – it would just be awesome.

I’ll get Rox’s quiver and probably some flame and frost dyes.
Really glad they’re bringing stuff back! Back when the quiver was there I didn’t want one, but I prefer the look over the ascended ones… (and this is cheaper tooooooo \o/ )

Which mouse/keyboard are you using?

I have a keyboard from medion that came with my computer, I use a Sharkoon Drakonia mouse. http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/node/2194
It’s pretty cheap (got mine for approx 30 euro’s) you can easily adjust the weight of the mouse and the dpi, programming the buttons is easy and you can make different presets.

Granted this is the first mouse I have that’s different than ‘this came with the computer’ but it works like a charm for me.

I am glad to have these points when working on map completion; however when I first enter a map I lose all interest in the minimap since there’s so much more to see. So many things going on and so many places to discover.
The first times completing a map was rather a ‘oh, I have discovered everything except those 3 poi’s. Which I ran past without coming close enough.’

I gues putting everything on the map can be a curse for some people; but for me personally it doesn’t ruin exploring; and is a blessing when I get to map completion.

EDIT: If you open your worldmap you can click on the eye in the bottom-left corner. Just start unchecking the boxes, your minimap will just show gathering nodes, waypoints and (I think) events.

It would be nice to see some of the Clothes we see on NPC’s Porchacable as town Clothes

for example the asura have some awesome looking outfits

The hat is from cultural light armor, the pants look close too, although they are a bit different.

Difference between RNG and RNG

in Clockwork Chaos

Curae.1837

Depends really.

If they add 10 minipets to the birthday presents and they all have an equal chance of dropping, then selling them and trading them would work. There’s still going to be ones that are favoured over the others and worth more but they aren’t going to be ultra expensive.

I’d favor this system – equal chances for each pet seems fair to me. No crying about how rng favors other people or anything + you never know what you’re going to get as per usual when opening a gift.

Aside from that. I dislike the 99% crap or 1% good rng, however in the above kind of rng it doesn’t matter so much to me.

To those who don’t want ANY rng ingame… It would get boring pretty soon since bosses/mobs would always give the same loot…

Do you display your titles?

I don’t really work towards titles – also I hardly display them. Atm I just don’t really have any titles that would suit my characters. Besides that – displaying a title on my mesmer on which I enjoy to wvwvw and pvp occasionally… nah.

I suspect, after the appearance of an evil Sylvari running the atherblades(that probably isn’t associated with the Nightmare Court, as they historically have only attacked other sylavri) She’s going to declare war on the pale tree.

They actually also attack skritt. (Brisban wildlands)

Mini's closer to owner

Why buy a minipet? Because they look cool, they keep your character company and it’s fun to see some little creature running along with you.

However. Whenever I’m running somewhere my minipet completely dissapears behind me and off the screen, even with the UI off I can’t see it. That is; untill I stop and it catches up to me.

I really hope that the mini’s can be brought closer to their owners so we can at least see them when playing.
