I completely agree with you. I also dislike gambling, and coming from a game that we started calling ‘pack world international’ I refuse to gamble for things.

I also am fine if they leave gambling packs in the game. It’s not ‘game-breaking’ as it doesn’t hold anything giving unfair advantages.

So far I’ve only spend real money on another character slot. I have been thinking of buying the medium armor skin and also thought about buying a Halloween set of town clothing. There are however various things that keep me from buying armor skins and town clothes, which brings me to another point.

Town clothing is only worn out of combat. As costume brawl is added I can understand, but it’s not a daily activity. So I never see it. So I don’t buy it.
Not to mention, when I am not wearing those town clothes, where do I leave them? Right, in my bank. Along with thousands of other things I keep in my bank :/
Armor skins, as I said, I’m actually still tempted to buy the medium armor skin. However, it’s 1 time use. And that bothers me. They are quite pricey. And I can only use them once.
If the armor skins could be used again, at the cost of transmutation stones each time you use it. I’d already have bought it. However, once again. Please, make a tab then for town clothing and skins as collectibles :/

I gues those things are my main reasons that I’m not spending any money. I am fine with supporting a game I love and enjoy. And I truly do enjoy and love playing gw2. It would just get better if such small things would be implemented.

I haven’t gotten far at all yet, I like to try such puzzles on my own, so I’ll wait this one out a bit ^^
It’s great that the puzzle isn’t here for a limited time, and please. Do add more permanent puzzles! I absolutely love such a challenge, dragging me away a bit from killing things.
Personally I don’t thing such puzzles should be too easy. After all, where is the challenge if it’s easy? I don’t feel accomplished if I can do a jumping puzzle in 1 go :|
Falling, starting over, quitting, starting again and eventually making it is part of the fun for me ^^’

My mesmer Sameri. Just hit 80 today and was lucky to find the temple I wanted gear from uncontested! Got the top I wanted to have right away.
Next up going to run some dungeons and slowely work on some pants from Arah… x’D For now, a true sylvari skirt :P

I agree with this. ATM I don’t really have more sets of gear, but I do have different weapon sets.
It would also be nice if this (or something alike, doesn’t have to be key-bound) could be made for dyes. ^^

I run a build without power ^^’ I usually run sword-sword/staff. But sometimes switch to focus offhand.
My utility skills consist mostly out of glamour skills. Feedback, null field and the last one varies on the situation.
I don’t have acces to a precise build ATM, as I’m on iPod. But a I said, I run without power. The rest of my setup is 20/20/15/15. From up till down in the trait lines ^^
From the top of my head I can say I got the sword precision increased, clone on dodge, shorter cool down on glamour skills. Toughness with staff and damage reduce for each clone.

Although I might lack in damage due to not having anything trained in power I notice things still die relatively fast(imo)
I’m not 2shotting things like on my thief, but then again, that’s not what I play a Mesmer for
This is my pve-only build btw ^^’ I switch to staff/Gs for pvp.

Crafting is more good for experience than the gear imo I’d say just play however you like. Whenever you get somewhere near a crafting station, see what you can produce with the mats you gathered. At least that’s how I did it.

Honest – I haven’t read all the replies.
However, I can tell about my own experience.
First time in a dungeon, AC, game was out a couple of weeks. It was a zergfest. If you die, return to a waypoint and run back as fast as possible to keep that mob or boss from resetting. After we got to Eir, 2 people quit and we dropped the squad. We all had died multiply times, had huge repair costs, and no. It wasn’t fun.

A few days ago I attempted the same dungeon again. Only 1 person kept dying, who now figured out it’s because he was running a glass cannon. 3 mesmers, an elementalist and a thief.
We all had a blast. The only time people who died returned to a waypoint, was at the last boss, because well, whatever. The waypoint was 3 seconds away. Rest of the time if someone died, or got downed, you just waited around for a ress.
Granted, this was story-mode. But I highly doubt we wouldn’t be able to the explorable mode with the same people.
Sure, the first couple of mobs were kind of hectic, along with bigger groups of mobs, but we made it through, we never had a full party-wipe and always at least 2 people on their feet, running around, keeping mobs busy while ressing whoever you’re near to.
Another thing that really helps, if figuring out combo’s. From what can you get an aura, from what can you make a bigger aoe by shooting things around.

Honestly, I can’t wait till I find the time to run another dungeon. These dungeons actually require me to look what I’m doing, and to look at what my party members are doing. Unlike other games I played where I stood around clicking potions and surfing the web in the meantime.

One of the reasons I’m guessing people ‘rather’ have per example a guardian, is buffs/squad related skills. Mesmer has some really wonderful skills for party, don’t get me wrong But a lot of people don’t see much benefit in them I’m guessing.

My first dungeon run however consisted out of 3 mesmers, a thief and an elementalist, and we did quite well. Most of the time 2 or 3 mesmers were up, keeping everything busy with clones, almost permanently using feedback on the archers.

I also noticed that my mesmer is quite tough. I put 20 in chaos for the toughness bonus from staff, and notice I can handle myself quite well against multiply mobs, but also against veterans it’s usually a piece of cake.

I gues all we can do to make this attitude dissapear is by showing them what we got

Well, it depends on what kind of name you want. You say you want a real first name, but what is real for you? Do names from different countries or languages count? Or historical/uncommon names?

I personally have a favour for historical names and give them a slight twist. You could always google something along the lines of ‘baby names’ which brings up a whole lot of pages, where you can select gender, where the name is from, etc.

My memory being as tight as a steel sieve as apposed to a steel trap, led me to download and print out the ‘codec’ or ‘cipher’ (takes your pick) from the wiki!

I Decoded the full poster including the small print quite easily once I got a clear enough view of it. The words are pretty easy to guess accurately once you get the ‘biggest part’ as pointed out.

It will take longer to read the new language without my handy code card but I have already started to do so!

English isn’t my native language and even though I speak it fluently, there are still some words I don’t know yet, which sometimes makes it harder to decipher some words.

After a while the letters start being more familiar and it gets a lot easier. I recognise 11 letters right away by now and come quite an end with that. Once you got the biggest part of a word it’s not all that hard to gues the rest anymore

Oh wow… if only I knew about that guide xD Ah well, I had loads of fun running around and figuring out the different letters though ^^
And I see now the first word is ‘avast’ and not ‘alast’ as I first thought. They appear to be using different fonts too sometimes which makes some letters look slightly different.

on a serious note. I’m not flipping anything. I’ve learned from other games I’m terrible in playing markets. I either stock up on items that never sell again. Stock up on items of which the price lowers to never get back up again. And well. That sort of thing x’D

I gave up on it, for now. P: If it comes back next year, I’ll make another attempt. I hardly have patience however, so once I notice I’m starting to get frustrated I stop and go do something else. I might make it one day, I might never. Either way, I’m having fun when trying it.
No use in getting frustrated over a game that I play to have fun ^^

I did enjoy the order things as well as the racial stories.
The thing that bothers me the most is the untied ends that you get in the first 20 levels or so, that you never hear about again…
What happened to Maveryk? The Sylvari from the other strange pale tree? Where is this other pale tree? To just set an example...

I think it’d be great if in future expansions they could bring us back to our roots, make the story at least back to something racial. I’m personally dreading the moment my alt gets into the pact, because the story will generally speaking be the same, even though I have the ability to make different choices…

I am too having the same problem. I am unable to enter together with my party.
Sometimes it asks me if I want to join my party (when I am on Lion’s arch, away from the portal.) upon answering “yes” to that, nothing further happens.
When standing next to the portal, I can enter solo while being in a party.
Someone else in my party entered solo too, despite us being squadded :/ I hope this can be fixed soon.

I am far from being good/informed when it comes to economics. But I kind of like the idea of an expire date.
In a different game I played you had the option to set the date to either 8 hours, 12 hours or 24 hours. (which is kind of short imo. Especially with a gamewide trading post here.)
But maybe give the option of one week or one month. Something along those lines.
I (and probably many others) tend to forget I even put things in the trading post, only to realize weeks later that my item is now way overpriced…

I agree, I’m not buying town clothes for a couple of reasons.
I would have to drag them from one character to another all the time if I want to wear them. I can’t see them unless I toggle them on and when I’m in a town (in which I hardly spend any time) and there is no specific ‘wardrobe’ for it.

The current armor skins don’t really tickle my fancy, however even if they did I’d be hesistant to buy them. If I buy such an item I’d like to use it account wide, over all my characters. What if I stop playing that particulair character? Or I find another armor skin I like better for that char? Wasted money then…
If it were something that I could just grab when I feel like it though (with or without the use of transmutation stones) I’d be a lot more likely to buy one or more.

I agree so much :C Hope they can give at least an estimate of when we can expect to see it. “Soon” in the previous MMO I played could range from 1 week to never…

Being driven by a completionist desire to maximize efficiency just complicates your life and makes your game into another job. If you just approach it more simply and do what’s fun, you can avoid making it into another life stress and use it as the source of relaxation and entertainment it was always designed to be. Thank goodness that I don’t have to subscribe to this so I can step back whenver I feel that I’m sabotaging my own break time and rejoin in the right state of mind.

If the prospect of the mystery of the holiday doesn’t excite you, if you are anxious about missing out on candy corn high/lows, and if you find yourself screaming at the screen whenever you get killed in costume brawl by some guy spouting tasteless jokes, then maybe you do need to take a step back and think about what you really want from this game. It doesn’t make you a lesser person to do so, and as you can see from all the other threads here, it happens to a substantial number of people. Being able to come back and actually enjoy playing helps you and everyone you encounter, and if you cannot do that, then at least you have improved your life by ceasing a vicious degenerative cycle.

This. I wish more people would do this.

Besides that, the few hours a day that I’m able to login(loads of schoolwork ) I’m having a blast.
It has honestly been a while since I enjoyed myself so much playing a game. ^^

I love those kid npc’s, they’re honestly adorable. The charr kid and the quaggans are by far my favourites

If you hold alt down, it will show all npc names that are currently in sight. The ghost is pretty invisible, took me a while too. Not to mention there always seem to be at least 4 players stacked on top of it.

By that logic you dont “Need” to do anything in this game, but considering that all the nice stuff is hang infront of you with sparkly dollar signs says otherwise. This is a money grab holiday, there is no denying that.

Now don’t pretend holidays outside games aren’t money-grabbing fests for companies. Heck I’d be surprised if I don’t see christmas stuff in stores before november even starts! All holidays cost money, and Arenanet has put a lot of time/effort and money into making this game. Even though I might not fully agree on some points of making money ‘back’ (the gambling with the chests) it doesn’t really influence gameplay. Besides something shiney the people who spend money don’t gain anything “better” than the players who don’t spend money.

I’m slightly sad about the weapon skins being so rare, but then again. That’s what they’re ‘rare’ for. I’m having plenty of fun participating in food fights, costume brawls, trick or treating and breaking my head over what the locations could be of those ghosts. All in all, I’m having fun, without spending real life money.

The chests have ALWAYS been a gamble. Just that there’s shiny stuff inside now…
I can see where people are coming from, and I also would rather have seen the skins up for sale instead of gamble. I personally refuse to pay to gamble anymore for gears and such. Sure, if I had keys I’d open some chests to try my luck, if I get a skin, awesome. If not, I got other goodies.

I played another mmo where well… everything was a gamble, people were opening chance packs all day hoping to get something rare. (and the chances were about 98,8% chance at crap, 0,001% chance at X, 0,002% chance at Y, etc. And those are actual numbers from their database…)
I’m actually guessing compared to that, the droprate is quite decent ^^"

I’d love to have one of the skins but I can live with not getting one. There’s plenty of content added to enjoy besides those skins.

I ought to say, I enjoyed the story, however I agree with that it’s kind of predictable.
The main problem for me, is that it seems to become ‘unpersonal’ once you join the pact, and I honestly dread the moment that my second character will hit that level :/ The quests you get joining the orders are great fun imo.

The only other problem I have is, what happened to the people you met earlier? The mysterious Sylvari I met, who left after a couple of quest?
The tavern-owner and his daughter? (The friends you get by picking commoner/noble/streetrat for human story.)
Why doesn’t my character ever bother to ask about them? Why don’t I hear anything about them? Whenever I go to my personal instance I’m just told that it would be nice if I’d return sometime for a drink. Ermh, hello? I’m here now!

I think overal the story could use a bit more depth, as well as letting characters that you met previously come back. It seems like after you join the pact your entire history has been erased :|

(btw, I’m 19, almost 20. And you’re never too old for gaming. Too mature maybe, but those 2 are unrelated. )

I agree… After having a tough battle and finally winning… I at least want to be able to cheer a moment, grab my loot and then go on.
It doesn’t really make sense either that sometimes the person you’re talking with in the cutscene is actually dead since 10 seconds of the start of the battle and you never got to ressing him… npc’s just magically get up…. “What have you been doing!? Sleeping?”

@Galandil.9641: What I tried to say is, that the chance is ‘reset’ each hit.
Hit one you have a 25% chance
Hit two you have a 25% chance
Hit three you have a 25% chance, etc.
You might proc it 4 times in a row, you might proc it only once in 10 hits (though it’s unlikely)
That way you have two times, 25% chance to proc it, which still doesn’t make 50% chance, but indeed, the numer you provided.
It’s been a while since I made such calculations, so I didn’t take my chances not wanting to provide false information.

Steal hits twice (poison for first, mug for second.) 50% chance to apply the rune, if it does apply the run, the -33% reduction to damage is taken into account first before damage is applied.

Unless this is calculated in a strange way (which I doubt) your math isn’t right there.

Attacking twice(poison and mug) does not make the chance 50%, it makes the chance 2 times 25%.
The overal chance would increase a bit, but it wouldn’t double. Chances don’t stack. There is a one out of six chance that you will roll six with a dice. But that doesn’t mean you will always get at least one six if you roll it six times.
