I was angry and bitter about the initial offer, but the new deal is exactly what I needed to see. I just bought the ultimate edition. Call me a sucker, and maybe I am, but the business model unveiled today is a winner in my book.
A-net had me at ‘character slot’.
I get it. I really do. I felt like that this morning. But, the announcement on trait/skill unlocks coupled with the free slot concession killed my urge to protest. Sorry to abandon your cause, but I just bought the Ultimate Edition. I hope you don’t feel too betrayed!

I am ecstatic. Seriously. This is a best-case-scenario. Just bought the Ultimate Edition… not because it’s a great value (though I do think so), but because I want to show my appreciation for A-Net’s willingness to do the RIGHT THING!
That’s me right now. I was angry and bitter for days, and now I’m completely satisfied with my (just-completed) Ultimate Edition purchase. I wanted to post this, because I have made about 100 negative posts in the last week, and A-Net’s decisions on traits for lv. 80’s and a free character slot merit a celebration!
Please change this topic title to “Re-Earning the Goodwill of the Nicest”. This has certainly done it for me!
I’m as intensely happy now as I was angry before. I hope A-Net sees a HUGE surge in sales. They made a mistake, they listened, and they did the right thing. That’s the hallmark of a company I WANT to support.
You’re giving Veteran players a free character slot? Nice!
Except for the people who bought the deluxe edition for the character slot. Now they’ll pointlessly complain. And thus the cycle begins anew, with people trying to milk undeserved concessions out of the company.
I bought the deluxe for the character slot.
It’s not pointlessly complaining, A-net showed us 3 versions of the game, I weighed each version and decided I would be willing to buy the more expensive version because it had a few silly bonuses and a CHARACTER slot. I needed the character slot, I figured I might as well get the other stuff while it was available.
Now I don’t need the character slot, I needed 1 for not, I would not have purchased a seconded extra one. My suggestion is just turn the slot into it’s current gem value on the pre orders.
Talk to customer service. I’m sure they’d be willing to downgrade your package and refund the difference… but here’s betting you won’t.
I am ecstatic, and I was one of the biggest ‘whiners’. When this news hit, I immediately purchased the Ultimate Edition. It was never about the money for me. I feel like A-net and I can be friends again.
I can’t get my wallet out fast enough now. Instant ultimate edition sale! This, coupled with the traits announcement has me over the moon. I was one of the angriest, most disappointed protesters, and now I couldn’t be happier.
A n00b-juicer finisher! OMG, I can just picture it….
Wake me up when I can roll a Revenant for $50 or less without deleting an existing character. Until then, I have other things to do and to spend my money on.

They made the right call after all. If you have excess skill challenges done, then you just get more spirit shards. You see, it does make sense to give feedback. I don’t think this has a real downside, despite the incessant posts of a few trolls to the contrary.
Per Colin, all level 80 characters will start with all base skills and traits unlocked after tomorrow’s patch. AMAZING news for the WvW players. Finally, a real bright spot.
I need some Lululemons for my Norn Warrior, cuz THAT would be special.
A quick update on this one -> After feedback from presenting the original hero point count – we decided getting to level 80 will give you enough hero points to unlock all the core skills and traits entirely. Doing hero challenges (aka skill challenges) will simply allow you to earn all the skills/traits earlier before level 80. With the release of HoT, there will be options to spend the excess hero points earned from doing hero challenges in the world.
There are a number of other changes on 6/23 to make the experience from 1-80 more exciting, better-paced, rewarding, and fun as well after having the time to evaluate and player feedback from the updates last year.

YES! Actual good news. Thank you!
Divinity’s Reach would make a really interesting WvW map.
Ahahahahahahahahahaha! Twitch stream… they are currently doing the 77th round of Rock-Paper-Scissors over who has to do that stream today.
Honestly I’m worried at this point that HoT will be GW2’s “Trials of Atlantis” (the infamous DAoC expansion), because it shares the two key traits with TOA. First off, the devs are very very secretive about what’s actually in it, and second off, it’s changing the entire endgame design from “do what you want” to “huge PvE mastery grind”. Hopefully not, but knowing so little, the similarities loom large.
But wasn’t GW2 originally marketed as a massive PvE grindfest? Oh, wait… I seem to remember some ‘manifesto’ about that…

Unwillingness to pay $60 to roll a Revenant without deleting a current character is neither whining nor raging. It’s normal intelligence. That said, I am just stupid enough to pay $50 for the privilege.
Well you can! Just upgrade your current account for 50 then buy a NEW account for 50. Much more value than some gems. And if you’re patient you can make more money from t6 mats from log in bonuses than the 4k they’d give you. Lol
Brilliant! I may just do this. $50 for a farm that quickly pays for itself…

$60 to make a Revenant without deleting a character? No thanks. Not with the very small amount of new content we’ve seen. Sorry, $60 is overpriced.
Would you have paid $90 for the original GW2 at release?
Under the assumption that you’re using the “but only 5 char slots at launch!” argument:
Five character slots is more than enough to try out your favourite professions, which, in the majority of the cases, is merely 1-3 per player.
Zero character slots makes it impossible to try out the revenant, especially if it has potential to end up being one of your favourites.
I have 15 characters, 2 of each profession + an extra warrior. I’m just not willing to pay $60 for character #16. I am, however, just stupid enough to pay $50 for it.
Maguuma Trailblazer might as well be changed to Giddy Fanboy.
Wake me up when I can roll a Revenant for $50 or less without deleting character. Sure, even that’s a bit overpriced, but I’d pay it.

Actually, no… but I would gladly pay $90 right now for HoT with 5 fresh slots to mess around with, even though HoT is much smaller than the base game.
It would cost me $60 to make a Revenant without deleting a character. Given the small amount of content currently known, that’s a terrible deal. I’ll wait for a deal I can live with.

I am convinced that such a deal will be offered quite soon after launch, if not before. 2017 it is then! The best part is, I get to keep my $50 until then.
I don’t care how they choose to do it, but A-net needs to make a Revenant character available to me for $50 or less. I will wait to buy until I get a deal that allows it.
Ok, see you in Maguuma in 2017 then!
Oh, so the release date is in 2017?! Good to know.
Back in February, when HoT was being announced, I saved up 150 gold and bought a character slot. That slot has been empty since February.
I don’t understand why people are crying about character slots at all.
I’m not crying. I have 15 characters, most with skins, extra bag slots, makeovers, etc. that I have purchased. Time is money my friend. If I grind gold for a slot, that time is the same as $10 to me. So, I’m willing to pay $50 for my Revenant + HoT content, period, not a penny (nor a grinding minute) more. It’s not entitlement, it’s economics.
This thread is not about ‘what new players get’ or ‘false advertising’. There are other threads for that.
The point I want to make is: given the content we’ve been shown, HoT is not worth $60. That’s the real price for most continuing players who want to make a Revenant without deleting an existing character. I don’t mind that a new player can make 5 Revenants for $50, but I do mind that I can’t make a single one for that price.

Guys, the googly eyes is a helmet skin. It’s 800 gems on the BLTC. Nice try though!
Wake me up when I can roll a Revenant for $50 or less without deleting any of my current characters. Until then, all this sound and fury signifies nothing.

I have 15 characters. I’m unwilling to delete any of them. If I buy HoT I will want to roll a Revenant. That means I need a character slot. So, the minimum cost to me for this expansion is $60. I have not seen nearly enough included to equate to $60 value, so I’ll just wait for HoT to go on sale or for a better deal on the packages.
No worries, the market will sort this out. If I end up moving back to ESO or on to a different game, so be it.
Dibs on a P/P female Skritt thief named Skritty-Skritty Bang-Bang.
Yeah, I’m sure that A-net hates the fact that I take up space on their servers with my 15 (yes, 15) characters and the skins I’ve bought for them. I should be excited to pay yet anther $50 + $10 for a slot so I can make character number 16 a Revenant. Somehow I’m just not feeling it. Sorry to be so ungrateful for this ‘opportunity’.
It’s really simple for me. HoT might be worth $50 if included a character slot, if the best-case scenario about what might be included pans out. I know for sure I’m not going to spend $50 for what’s been shown + $10 more for a slot so I can roll a Revenant. SIMPLY. NOT. HAPPENING. No entitlement here, just an unwillingness to be fleeced.
However, if I were a new customer, heck YES I’d take the deal A-net is offering them! But, I’m not a new customer…
I’d take the $50 price with a free slot or the equivalent in gems. If they added a slot to each package I’d buy the Ultimate Edition because I’d want to reward them for doing the right thing.

I’m guessing they are hoping to get enough pre-order money to finish the content that they have already described. I’d bet there isn’t much content that hasn’t been shown that is ready for even an alpha test. But, hey, if you enjoy helping a developer find their bugs, by all means pre-order and help them out by playing the betas. That way, when the rest of us buy HoT on sale after the poor post-release reviews there will be fewer annoying bugs for us to deal with.
Two customers walk into a restaurant. The hostess asks each “Have you dined with us before?” When one customer says “No” the hostess informs her that she qualifies for a 2-for-1 meal special. The other customer reads the menu and notices that the restaurant seems pricier than before for the meal size, so he asks if he can get the same deal. The hostess replies “Well, this is not your first time here, so we figure you must be willing to pay full price! You’re already a customer, and we’re focused on getting new business.”
Do you stay and eat?

Do you have a working link, I’d like to read the article.
Though, I’m not sure that virtualpolicy.net is a source for binding precedent (as opposed to a .gov source or case law). But I’m a nerd and I like to learn.
Sorry. Try this: http://www.virtualpolicy.net/tag/virtualitems
I’ll be waiting on the sidelines. It’s a shame, because I wanted to be hyped about this. I’m sure I would have jumped on it right away if the packages had been $10 less each (probably would have been foolishly excited enough to buy the Ultimate Edition because I like the shiny gem store skins on the many characters I already have). Yeah, it’s really about $10.
It’s like pre-purchasing a time-share for a vacation with only a vague description of the location and no clear idea when you will be going or what there is to do when you get there. But, hey, go ahead! I’ll be waiting until I see $50 dollars of value. As it is, I’d put it at $25-30 based on what’s been shown. I’d probably pay $40 because I like my characters. I’d pay $50 if they threw in a slot or the gems to buy one.
It’s not about the money, really. It’s about the players and the company feeling mutually valued. Right now, I’m feeling disrespected.
Don’t worry, they are taking their time to buff all elite specs across the board. Let me see you enjoy PvP/WvW without HoT.
It’s like every other game: there will be a certain amount of power creep that pushes players to upgrade. Either right away or over time, elite specializations will become the go-to builds due to their increasing advantage over “base set” builds.
Knock it off with the legal aspect. Any lawsuit has a kitten’s chance in Orr of success, and you (hopefully) know that.
Virtual goods are adjudicated under a different set of rules than are physical goods, and you (presumably) know that too.

I’m just wishing they’d offer a $300 Super Mega Ultimate Edition with 10,000 gems so I wouldn’t have to keep getting my credit card out every time they release a new minipet. Keeping up with all the gem store releases is actually really hard.
This is basically a $40 expansion, priced at $50. Not worth it. Throw in 800 gems or a free slot, and I’ll call it even.
A-net doesn’t owe me this. It’s just my personal precondition for buying the expansion.

… and it’s obvious that A-net has to do something to sweeten the deal or many of those 2 million customers will stay on the sidelines. I know I am not forking over $50 + $10 for a slot on the basis of what we’ve seen.
It would not take much to get me to buy. 800 gems or a free slot would probably do it for me.
Knock it off with the legal aspect. Any lawsuit has a kitten’s chance in Orr of success, and you (hopefully) know that. The real issue is the value offered for the money paid. Since the value isn’t (quite) there as far as we’ve been shown, simply vote with your (closed) wallet until A-net offers something at least slightly more attractive for the price.
