The timing and pacing of this rollout is a transparently obvious attempt to divert attention from the impending release of another major combat MMO. That other game won’t be for everyone. GW2 is doing this too late to keep me here, when a LOT of this could have been released long ago. They simply held these features back so they could use them to try and keep the citizens of Tyria from emigrating to Tamriel. Too bad I already bought my ticket.
I have 11 lv. 80 toons and almost 1300 achievement points. I have bought hundreds of dollars worth of bank slots, backpack slots, character slots, armor skins, weapon skins and dies. I have almost 20,000 WvW player kills. I have been here since prerelease. I am beyond tired of being strung along. I want a good combat-focused MMO that doesn’t use ‘achievement points’ to keep me playing instead of solid WvW endgame mechanics. Fortunately, there is another MMO launching in just over a week, and I found during the beta testing for that game that it has what I’m looking for. Of course, some will disagree, but I’ll see some of you in Tamriel!
‘Soon’ just wasn’t soon enough for me.
Whoohoo, April Fool’s. Won’t that be fun. -_-
I think WXP merge is still in talks to make it free or not. I mean if you have to pay 800 gems to merge the points between toons into one, imagine the amount of profit that would make….
it’s easier to imagine the number of players who would quit the game.
This fix is overdue as it is.
If they don’t implement this promptly I will simply spend ALL of my gaming time on ESO WvW instead of splitting it to continue on GW2. WvW is the endgame for me. I have 11 lv. 80 toons fully geared with more than 450 WvW ranks between them.
I’ve been led to believe that the Alt-penalty was going to be removed from WvW ‘soon’. Soon needs to be now.
WvW is the endgame for me. I’m sitting here with 11 lv. 80 toons fully geared with an average WvW rank of 50, since I play them all in WvW. If this promised change is not delivered before season 2 I will be extremely disappointed.
A-net needs to follow through. A-net also needs to realize that PvE is too repetitive, easy and flat-out boring for many long-term players… And yes, the LS does help a bit, but not much.
It’s OK, April will be here soon.
This reminds me of the days of dial-up internet. I can log in after a looooooong load time, but then I can’t do anything except move.
I like them better now than before… by a LOT.
I am almost done leveling my 10th level 80 toon. Map completion on that many characters is a complete joke. There is no way I’m spending my time teaching skills to cows on some random ranch just to ‘get a heart’ 10 times over. This is a combat MMO, not a little kid’s iPad app.
PLEASE make map completion 1-and-done!!!
Charr woman ANGRY! Charr woman SMASH.
Here’s a typical example of a D/D skill rotation involving Arcane Wave in WvW:
1) Use Ring of Fire in a large melee of mixed enemies and friendlies.
2) Burning Speed to shoot out of the mob, causing damage on the way.
3) Dodge-roll while turning 180 to lay down a Flame Burst, burning foes on the edge of the mob.
4) At the end of the twisting dodge-roll, switch attunement to Lighting (granting yourself swiftness) while simultaneously click-targeting an enemy on the opposite side of the mob (back-line).
5) Immediately cast Ride the Lightning to shoot back through your fire fields.
6) Trigger both Arcane Wave and Shocking Aura precisely in the middle of the Ring of Fire, granting might and an electrical aura to yourself and your allies while damaging multiple enemies and stunning any enemy that hits you or your allies.
7) You are now in the enemy back-line, where you can either continue causing mayhem with your up-mighted skills, or use your swiftness to escape.
There are literally dozens of combos that require this precise use of Arcane Wave while changing direction at high speed and also click-targeting enemies. I defy you to both click-target an enemy for an attack while simultaneously placing Arcane Wave where you need it with your mouse-pointer when Riding the Lightning. You CAN’T.
If you’re not a D/D elementalist, you may have no idea what I’m talking about. We have terrible HP and Armor, so speed is our major defense, and blast-finisher/field combos are our only major offense (and also a defense, but that’s another combo). This is a nerf to D/D elementalists of epic proportions.
(edited by Daddar.5971)
It would be great if A-net would add an option to the ground-targeting menu:
Instant, centered on caster... Problem solved!
I can say after 8 hours on my ele since the change that I can not get off all my field combos anymore, as I am constantly changing direction and dodge-rolling while casting and I need evasive arcana to trigger precisely and instantly without aiming… as it used to!
I use arcane wave constantly for field combos running d/d. This change is incredibly annoying, since I always want it centered on my character. I agree with the solutions proposed above!
A-net has said they want to encourage players to spread out in smaller groups rather than bunch up in massive zergs. Here’s the fix:
Change supplies so that they can be picked up by any player regardless of the color of the supply depot.
This would allow small raiding groups to run into an undefended camp and steal supplies, which are critical in WvW. Any team that clumped in a single giant zerg on the map would be robbed blind my the roaming raiders, who would not be bogged down by the requirement to actually take the camp. I’m sure this would be simple to change and highly effective.
I destroyed several toxic offshoots and didn’t get credit for the daily. This issue occurred the LAST time this was a daily AP item and it still isn’t fixed.
If fractal level is now account-bound so that players can do fractals on their alts, why not do the same for WvW? I have 8 level 80’s and play all of them in WvW. If I stuck to one toon, I’d be over world rank 300.
Why should each of my characters have a separate WvW ranking? All that does is penalize me for creating, leveling, gearing and buying skins for multiple toons… It makes no sense at all. Please consider changing WvW ranking to ‘account-bound’.
Maybe I should explain further. I’m not a ‘great player’, but I do have 100% map completion, all slayer achievements, 400/500 in all crafting disciplines, etc. I do all the living story meta’s, though they get old quickly. I have over 10,000 AP and 20K kills in WvW. All 8 of my Lv 80 toons have 100% ascended trinkets and exotic gear.
I like variety and challenging combat. What I mean by challenging combat is: any fight where my character might actually die despite my best effort. I can usually solo most champs or a WvW camp w/ Mercs on any one of my toons, but I sometimes fail. That’s what I like.
No offense intended to those who like minigames, jumping puzzles, random easy mobs or Lion’s Arch fashion shows. Whatever floats your boat. A-Net has said that it wants to let us play what we like. I’ve already ‘been there, done that’ (the title says it all) and I don’t want to do it again. For me, doing map completion 8 times is like watching reruns of the same mediocre TV show 8 times when I could be doing something much better.
We’ve all seen threads about the fact that GW2 is alt-unfriendly (massively so). I have a suggestion to mitigate this. How about a new item, let’s call it the ‘Vision Crystal’, that does the following:
1. The Vision Crystal can only be purchased (from the gem store for say 1600 gems) by a character that is Lv. 80 with full map completion.
2. The Vision crystal is account-bound, and can only be used by Lv. 80 characters.
3. Double-clicking on the Vision Crystal will permanently reveal/open all waypoints on all maps for that character (but not POI’s, Skill Points or Vistas).
4. A character using the Vision Crystal will no longer be able to get the completion rewards for any map zone, so use of the Vision Crystal should be weighed carefully.
No one, and I mean no one wants to go through the incredibly tedious and boring process of map completion multiple times just to allow them to do events on their alts instead of using their ‘main’ all the time. I have 8 Lv. 80 toons, and I’m for kitten sure not doing all that make-work stuff 8 times. Seriously A-net, how ’bout it?

There are several ways to address the power imbalance between high and lower population servers:
1. Siege. Whenever a server is 100 PPT behind the leader, their siege costs 80% of the normal supply to build. When a server is 200PPT behind the leader, siege costs 50% of normal.
2. NPC’s. Whenever a server is 100PPT behind the leader, all players on the server with commander tags up get an ‘NPC squire’ following them until it is killed or the server is less than 100PPT behind. Siegerazer/Siegecrusher will start with only 5 players present. When a server is 200PPT behind the leader, every player with a commander tag gets a 3-mercenary guard detail as long as the tag is up and the server is 200 points behind. The 3-guard detail becomes a 1-guard detail when the gap falls to less than 200PPT.
3. Bloodlust. Whenever a server is 100PPT ahead of the 2nd place server, it will need to hold 4 runs to get bloodlust. Whenever a server is 200PPT ahead of the 2nd place server, it will need to hold all 5 ruins to get bloodlust. A server that is 100PPT behind the leader will only need to hold 2 ruins to get bloodlust, while a server that is 200 PPT behind the leader will only need to hold 1 ruin.
4. Resurrection. A server that is 100PPT behind the leader will be able to resurrect players 10% faster. A server that is 200PPT behind the leader will be able to resurrect players 25% faster.
5. Defenses. NPCs defending structures, camps and sentry points for a server that is behind the leader by 200PPT get upgraded by one stage (Normal to Veteran, Veteran to Champion, Champion to Legendary). This frees the available defending players for counterattack. Upgraded NPC’s do not give upgraded loot when killed. These upgrades disappear as soon as the gap is less than 200PPT.
There are probably better ideas for how to buff the underdogs, but buffing them would go a long way toward alleviating the demoralization that causes the players on a server that is getting steamrolled to just quit. When players on the losing teams leave WvW for greener pastures it just makes WvW less interesting and fun for everyone.

Scarlet is about to implement a One World Government. We’ll all be forced to listen to her babble and giggle 24/7 for all eternity.
I’m so sad. I was having so much fun running in a circle pressing 1 repeatedly, with occasional F’s thrown in to pick up my loot. Now I actually have to play a variety of content to get my payoff. C’mon A-net, just eliminate all the other zones and put 10 champions in a loop in LA and let us run around zerging them. Whaaaaaa! Pleeeeeease!
Encouraging players is fine and dandy, the problem is that low population servers do not have the players needed, no matter how many carrots you throw at them.
This would be true, except that players from high population servers might well migrate (for free) to a lower population server in order to play WvW for free rather than 20 silver/hour, plus a wait to get in. This would help correct the population problem…
What we have in WvW is a simple product of the law of supply and demand. WvW spots are in short supply, and the new AP rewards have raised the demand. I propose that A-net do what airlines and hotels do: implement a system that adjusts costs to reflect the demand at a given time. A new system might look something like this:
1. At the close of the WvW season, there will be an interim period during which transfers to a lower-population server are free, and all other transfers are half price. This will encourage transfers to lower population servers, alleviating the population imbalance to some degree. At the end of the interim period, the new season will begin, and server transfers will return to the normal price.
2. All queues will be staged from the Edge of the Mists. The Edge of the Mists will have overflows, so there should be no issue entering that map. Players will not be able to queue for a full WvW map from any PvE or PvP zone.
3. A player wishing to enter a map with a queue will need to pay a fee to do so. This fee will scale with the number of players already queued for the map. Maps without a queue will be free to enter, while fees to queue up will vary from 1-10 silver according to the length of the queue. These fees are similar to the WP fees incurred during normal PvE play, and are therefore not an excessive burden. Players on servers with extremely long queues will potentially pay 10 silver per half-hour in WvW, while players on servers with no queue will pay nothing. Please see item 1 above for the solution to any complaints about this.
4. Queue wait times will no longer be random, but will now be on a first in, first out basis. If a player wishes to play with a party, then all players to be included should queue at the same time to ensure that all get in within a short time span. After 10 minutes of inactivity, any player in a map with a queue will automatically be transferred to the Edge of the Mists. WvW maps are intended for active play.
5. Every half hour, the queue length for a player’s current map will be displayed. A dialog will appear, giving players on queued maps the option to pay the queue fee to remain on the map, or exit to the Edge of the Mists. An option in the settings menu will enable players to automatically pay the queue fee to avoid having the dialog appear. Players wishing to move from one queued map to another must do so by moving to the Edge of the Mists, and entering the queue for the new map, if any.
6. Gold rewards, especially for successful defensive actions such as keep or tower defense or dolyak escort will be increased slightly to compensate for the new fees. Players who a deploy a superior siege weapon from their inventory and spend any supply to build it will be exempt from fees for the next half hour period. Again, this will compensate players for the costs incurred on behalf of their server.
A system like this will accomplish several important goals. First, it will provide incentive to players to choose a server that has fewer active WvW players and smaller queues, reducing WvW population imbalances and thus making more servers competitive with each other. Second, it will provide an additional gold sink to counter the gold inflation the game is experiencing. Third, it will reduce frustration and increase player enjoyment because there will be more servers that are evenly matched and thus equally able to compete with each other for season rewards. Fourth, the system will incentivize active play, so that players will no longer enter WvW, taking up a valuable queue spot, only to go AFK for an extended period.
(edited by Daddar.5971)
I’d like to see the HP/attack power/etc. of champions scale up dramatically with the number of players present (above, say 10 players). This would make the whole encounter more fun. It would slow down the money train, but so what? We already have too much inflation in the game as it is.
I take mediocrity seriously!
Maybe Anet is living by your moto too.
Ever heard of tongue in cheek?
I have played since the beginning. Hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours later I am frustrated and sad that it has come to this. If Tuesday’s patch doesn’t make a big difference, then I am taking a break. I doubt I’ll come back at all, since I tend to be an all-or-nothing kind of player. This game had so much going for it…
It is weekend. If you are on a server with very high WvW population this queue will be normal for several more weekends. maybe yuo should switch to a server with lower population in WvW.
Maybe A-Net should provide the server capacity necessary to actually run the game, regardless of server. It’s certainly not the player’s fault that the game doesn’t work as advertised… especially since the Arena-net’s business plan seems to rely on making the game unplayable on some servers and then charging the player extra to move to a server where it is marginally less unplayable. I sat in queue for hours yesterday, and when I finally got in the borderlands were quite empty, with only a fraction of the players they used to hold. Is A-net trying to run the game with less hardware capacity because some of their servers are down/broken? A-net sets the cap on server population, and A-net has a responsibility to deliver the game to all servers.
I only have so many hours of free time, since I work 50 hours a week. Spending those hours in an endless queue is not acceptable. All I can say is the situation had better improve dramatically before ESO is released…
I have 8 level 80 toons, one for each profession. If WXP were account bound I’d finally feel like I got the benefit I should from 1000’s of hours of play. I’ll gladly pay gems to make this happen.
I am on a T1 server, and I can complete every single non-WvW daily achievement while I am waiting in queue for WvW and still not get in. When/if I eventually get into a WvW map the skill lag makes it unplayable and/or I get disconnected. And, no, this is not a problem with my hardware…
Same problem here. I can’t even use my skills in PvE, and when I can it takes up to 30s to proc. Now the entire game is almost unplayable, instead of ‘just’ WvW.
Let’s cut through the kitten on this. A-net has received hundreds of dollars of my money. The game was great at first, but they have oversold their capacity. I feel like I paid for a first class airline ticket, got bumped and had to sleep in the airport, only to get up the next morning to be put on a broken down bus with standing room only.
A-net knew this was a problem, so what did they do? They put the game on sale for 40% off and put out a whole table full of carrots (a WvW ‘tournament’ full of AP achievements) to lure even more people in. Is this a sign of desperation, or what?
(edited by Daddar.5971)
All they need to do is give every player on a WvW map a 2-5% bonus to all stats that disappears whenever they are within 1200 range of more than 20 people (or maybe a smaller number) from the same server. The exact bonus percentage needed to encourage zerg breakup should be determined by beta testing.
Couldn’t agree more. Make WvW playable again. Do it now. Also, get rid of the 3-hour+ queue fiasco while you’re at it. The bottom line is A-net should not be marketing a product when it clearly lacks the server capacity to support and deliver it as promised.
I also had the bug while in WvW on SoR. Now I’m stuck in endless queue to get back into WvW. :/
The lag got noticeably worse when Healthcare.gov launched. Is A-net renting out half their WvW server space for Obamacare? That would explain everything!
On a serious note, this WvW ‘season’ is all about who can find the profession and build that gets max damage on skill-1 autoattack, because that’s the only skill that works at all (sporadically at that). My toons all have builds that rely on well-timed skill combos which are now useless.
So, I guess it’s time to switch to a no-skill-tanky build with the highest damage ranged autoattack, stand near the back of the zerg and press 1 until someone dies. Now that’s what I call fun… NOT.
A-net has clearly oversold their capacity. It’s like packing 150 people on an airplane that seats 100. No one gets what they paid for and everyone is annoyed. Why is it that people want to blame others who paid $22 to transfer to a tier 1 server? A-net offered the transfer, took the money and did not provide the advertised service. What could be clearer?
Look, A-net sells the game describing how wonderful WvW is. What you’re saying is that it’s up to me to transfer servers. I’m saying it’s up to A-net to make their game not only playable, but as good as they advertised. If my clothes washer wasn’t working, would you suggest I started washing them by hand? If my car barely ran, would you suggest I switched to a bicycle? Of course not! I/we expect a company to deliver the product they advertise.
A-net needs to either upgrade its server capacity or make more, smaller server sizes. Something, anything to make the game work as it should.
This is a serious problem:
1. The A-Net servers are completely incapable of handling the load in even a medium-sized WvW battle.
2. Massive skill lag ensues, so that even the auto-attack fires only sporadically.
3. A-net promotes WvW to the masses with a tournament season.
4. Queue times are over 2 hours during peak weekend times.
5. The experience is so frustrating that I want to quit.
All of my toons have builds/skill sets that work on combos where timing is important. The A-net server lag completely destroys build synergy, rewarding the unskilled players who select their build and profession because it gives them the maximum DPS with the lame skill 1 autoattack!!!
So this tourney is about who can get through the queue and into a big zerg so they can repeatedly press the 1 key until somebody dies. Sorry, A-net, that’s not what you promised, and not what I paid for. FIX IT.
I have a lv. 80 toon for each profession. I play all of them a lot, and all are in full exotic a/ mostly ascended trinkets. I have no problems remembering how to play each well. The problem I do have is the ridiculously boring map completion on each and the fact that each levels separately in WvW.
This game is not only Alt-unfriendly, it is Alt-penalizing.
Here’s why I say this. I have 8 Lv. 80 toons, one for each profession, and all with full exotic gear, and most with ascended trinkets. To get to that point I have had to repeat lots of (to me) boring/grinding content that should have been account bound. I do not want to spend 15 minutes teaching skills to cows on some random ranch just to get a ‘heart’ when I am really after challenging combat. Why can’t WvW skill level be account-bound so that I can play all 8 of my toons with the benefits I’ve earned? Why can’t map completion be one-and-done so that it isn’t boring as kitten to open all the areas for all my toons? Oh, and add to that the fact that the much-touted ‘build diversity’ boils down to full zerker in PvE and PVT in WvW.
I suppose you can say ‘if you’re not having fun then just quit’, but that misses the point. If the game were living up to its stated goals I would be having fun…
Same here, on Sanctum of Rall. I finally got into a zone where the event was working…. and NO.
If repetitive speed dungeon runs is your idea of a good time, then by all means stay full zerker. However, full zerkers gear in WvW makes a player rally fodder for the smart people who are running PVT and can survive forever. Full zerkers die in WvW like flies. I’ll be collecting dozens of bags while the zerkers respawn and (try to) run back.
I experienced this bug as well. When I went to open the 2nd tower, the chest was already open and I did not get credit. I tried it 3 times, with both escort and champion defeat missions. This is in fact a bug!
At least we get some actual new combat content, rather than another annoying (to me) minigame. The farming is worth the effort this time.
I think it would be interesting to see whether players’ votes in-game correlate with their party preference in US elections. Using D for Democrat and R for Republican reply with one of the following:
D/Ellen
R/Ellen
D/Evon
R/Evon
No need to explain unless you want to. Please do not bash others for their responses.
Simple: Ellen will make it less expensive to waypoint around, improving my ability to earn the gold I need. Evon on the other hand will merely make it more tempting to throw away real money on boxes of worthless junk that do nothing to improve gameplay.
Any character that does anything to advance the role of RNG needs to die. A-Net: please make Evon a world boss so we can all kill him once a day for loot. Thanks.
Perhaps for instance the Molten Facility could be entered through instanced events in WvW and PvE so we could still access it occasionally. Wouldn’t it be cool if periodically/randomly a Molten Alliance tunnel opened inside Stonemist Castle, unleashing a horde of enemies? Maybe every WvW reset has the Molten Alliance in control of Stonemist. Or maybe it spawns in a PvE area with a new Molten PvE world boss, giving access to Molten Facility upon defeating it. There are so many good possibilities for challenging, fun, permanent LS-based content…
