^ THIS. So much this. I’m simply amazed at how utterly hypocritical this unlock structure is given the original manifesto.
I have 17 lv. 80 toons, on which I have spent many gems for skins. I want to play all of them. I’m willing to do all of the HoT content once… or twice, maybe. But not 17 times. I play mostly WvW, and it will take me forever to get all the elites there, while a PvE player has an absolutely huge head start.

To all of those that seem to be floored by this announcement…you just proved that the human race does not pay attention very well. I’ve known for a long time it would take HP to unlock the Elite Spec and you wouldn’t be able to get all of it right off the bat. What I refuse to do though is tell you where the information is at, find it for yourself…the only thing we didn’t know what the total number of HP needed, but I knew my ~200 existing on several character wasn’t going to be enough to unlock the entire Elite Spec!
We, the ignorant and illiterate masses, beseech thee, o Great Zaklex, to bestow upon us yet more morsels of thine overflowing wisdom. We thank thee in advance for thine patience with such simpletons as we.
I have 2 slots from Ultimate edition. I was gonna roll a Charr male revenant and a Norn female… but now that I see the unlock requirements for the elites I may just skip rolling a new toon at all. I have 17 other level 80’s to grind for elites. Grind, grind….zzzzz…grind x17.

Does A-Net realize that the karma train in EotM is gonna be a HUGE thing? That’s the most efficient way for a WvW player to earn the hero points. I HATE EotM, but it’s better than PvE… so I’m gonna spend several MONTHS running in a karma train (to get the elite on all 19 toons) rather than fighting in WvW as I’d rather be doing.

Very true, actually. Either they knew this number (400) all along and chose to withhold it in order to wring the maximum number of pre-orders out of the current player base…. or they just pulled this number out of some orifice yesterday. Either way, it’s bad.

I have been here since before core game launch. I have 17 lv 80 toons. I spend almost all my time in WvW. I know I can earn the elites there, but doing the math leads me to the conclusion that I simply need to find another game. We have been asking forever for hard numbers on hero points needed for unlock. I bought the ultimate edition despite the lack of info because I trusted A-Net to be reasonable. I was wrong.
I’m all for BC awareness, but pink is the HoT color right now, so let’s not limit its use. Some like it HoT, and really HoT toons wear pink.
I’d like my jeweler to be able to craft ascended trinkets. I’d like my chef to be able to craft rarer (or specific, account-bound) dyes, higher-level potions and longer-duration foods. I hope they make time to do this when the HoT dust settles.
Warning to Devs:
Do not implement this in WvW. I spend 90% of my time in WvW, and this would be a terrible change. Yes, certain trait lines are not viable in WvW, but not every trait line is, regardless of if it’s a pet class or not. Some traits are designed for WvW, some aren’t. But here’s the big concern: statistical damage reduction.
What do I mean by this? If you have 5 players standing in an AoE circle, then all the players will take 100% of the damage. Now, lets say those 5 players are pet classes and each has 4 pets out, standing in an AoE cirlcle. Those players now have 80% damage reduction due to the statistical chance of them getting hit. This would make it the most powerful class of classes in the game.
Untill this issue is addressed, pets shouldn’t be buffed for WvW.
Thanks for implementing this for PvE
Easy fix: Pets in AoE circles always get hit (at reduced damage) and pets do not count toward the 5 target maximum affected by the AoE.

I have 17 lv. 80 toons, soon to be 19. I have 1 character with map completion/all hero points. Most of my time is spent in WvW. What ever happened to ‘play the way you want’? I’ll gladly complete every last bit of HoT PvE ONCE. After that, I’ll be sorely annoyed if I have to grind PvE ‘n00b hero timewasters challenges’ on all my alts.
That’s right, dress your characters in HoT pink on October 23rd… because we can!
Pink: The official color of HoT.
I may have missed it, but has there been any word on whether HoT will include lv. 500 cooking and jewelcrafting? I really hope so, since I have a lot of hoarded ingredients for both.
I have over 210 tomes and I already have 17 lv. 80 characters. I’ll be clicking both my Revenants straight to 80, tyvm.
Mordremize that frufru and let us kill him. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. For loot and giggles.
…and this gating applies per account or per character? If it is per character, I’m quitting, because I’m NOT doing it 19 times over.
Hey, even facebook is getting a dislike button. GW2 forum definitely needs a dislike button.
RNG = Really Not Good. Nobody likes it. It’s actually DEmotivating in the extreme. If we must have RNG, then let increased magic find raise the chances for very rare token drops, with 20 tokens tradeable for the precursor of the player’s choice.
I’m definitely up for farming Mordrem Trahearne for daily champ bags. I need more silk, and you know he’s full of that.
Why is it that so many think that ‘challenging’ means only ‘dodge the insta-kill and pump out max DPS’? What if bosses got Aegis, protection or retaliation stacks when they were hit with direct damage? Condi would be a real thing then. But then maybe bosses could transfer condis to the group or convert them to boons. I’d like to see more creativity and variety in boss mechanics. This DPS or get out environment means that most builds are useless, and that’s boring.

Players were able to get the weekly key on Sunday… up until they re-enabled the raid. After that players who did lv 10 PS did not get a key.
There are so many other ways that A-net could balance raid difficulty. Bosses with reflect, slowly stacking regen or retaliation, slowly increasing toughness or vitality, escalating dps bursts, toggling between invulnerability to direct damage and conditions , corrupting or stealing boons, autocrits every time a character heals, preventing weapon swaps, confusing players who do direct damage or mirroring conditions. The list goes on and on.
OK, that is frustrating. I would really like some clear communication regarding mission and black lion key reset schedules. As it is, I missed missions and then wasted an experience scroll because the normal key drop for the personal story was disabled when raids were turned back on Sunday evening. others got to do missions and got their weekly key, while some like me did not… all due to poor, misleading and contradictory communication from ArenaNet. Not professional at all.
Unfortunately I need to sleep, and then get up and go to work for a living.
Straight answer? Not by a long shot.
Great. missed out because I trusted what I was told.
No, you didn’t miss out anything. That was an oversight. Anyone and any guild who did and going to do guild mission between Saturday reset to Monday can be considered abusing an exploit.
Riiiight. Just like all the people who got discount bag slots on all their alts when it was supposed to be 1 per player, not 1 per character (sure wish I’d known about that little ‘oversight’). No one is going to get sanctioned. No one ever does.
Well I have just tested it, and I can tell you that the personal story key is NOT reset. I just wasted an experience scroll. So, I missed my guild’s missions, and wasted an irreplaceable item because missions did reset, but weekly personal story key did not. ;-;
Now I’m angry. I needed the commendations to prepare characters for HoT. A-Net announced there would be no reset, yet there was. My guild did end up running missions, and I missed out, since it was clearly stated that we would not be able to run missions. Thanks a bunch! No raid today, either, since that’s bugged. These two things along with the Mordrem Invasion fiasco have made this a very disappointing month. :/
This is just a prelude to the coming Quaggan Genocide.
I’ll have the chopped Trahearne salad with the spicy Rytlock dressing.
Call it satire, sarcasm., or snark. I plead guilty. My point is: there will be more than 1 way to clear a raid, and only a sociopath sees other players as ‘tools to optimize raid clearing time’. It’s a game. Games are for fun. I’ll have no problem clearing raids with people who have social skills and are not hyper-arrogant control freaks, even if it takes slightly longer.
So you really believe that only the one perfectly optimal party composition with the right professions running the exact ‘meta’ builds will succeed? I sure won’t be able to figure it out, so please make an elite raid guide soon, preferably before the expansion releases, since you seem to know what it will take already. Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise with the lesser players like me.
Will all of the Meta-Messiahs please hurry up and publish the exact builds you are requiring for each profession you’ll allow in your raid party? I’ll need detailed gear lists (weapon, armor, runes, sigils, trinkets) as well as skills to equip and a rotation for pressing my buttons. I’ll put my character together exactly as you require and practice until I am good enough at doing exactly what I’m told to please you. Then I will get the coveted chance to complete a raid in record-setting time. It won’t be ‘playing’ at all; it will be a job. But really, why play when you can work?
OMG, I can’t just skip most of the content and then stack in a corner spamming1 until my loot sacks get dispensed?! Oh, the horror. That’s it, I’m quitting the game.
^THIS times 1 million.
I’d like the option to just shank my pet and be done with it.
My dream is for the Maguuma Wastes to suddenly become a PvP area where all of the Sylvari Salad People are teamed up with the non-player monsters against all of the Human, Charr, Norn and Asura players. The game would be a lot more entertaining, that’s for sure! I have toons of all races, so I’d play both sides of the battle.
I’m a teacher, and nothing is more annoying than the kid who keeps running to the nearest adult and trying to get another kid punished. Just hit the block button and stop the drama. Please.
^This. So much this.
Whatever. I’d rather run the dungeon 2 minutes slower than spend 5 minutes on gear/build/food/skill/trait/whatever checks/arguments and also have to deal with some self-righteous group leader who dictates everything that everyone does inside the dungeon. If that’s your thing, have ‘fun’ without me.
This whole whinge-fest just shows that some people fear any change that disrupts their comfortable little meta. If you’ve been sitting back spamming 1 for 3 years on the zerker build you copied from the internet, this must be very hard for you. But, I promise, with just a little thinking and practice you might just learn to play a new build. Who knows?… you might even end up enjoying it.
I do agree that rangers have gotten stuck with a narrow pigeon-hole role since all of their non-elite specs are suboptimal at best… but will everyone please stop dropping loads in their drawers for a minute? I’m absolutely sure that there will be multiple party types that can clear raids with comparable efficiency. Try a little boon-spreading, for example. It might just ruin your day if you are addicted to the full-zerker-is-always-best meta we’ve had for 3 years straight. A-net isn’t ‘forcing the holy trinity down our throats’, but they are saying L2P something besides straight zerker for once! If you absolutely insist on finding the exact party makeup that will allow you to clear a raid in world-record time, all I can say is have fun with that… because most people are not full-on speed freaks and we frankly don’t care if it takes an extra 30 seconds out of our day to clear a raid. That 30 seconds more than makes up for having to deal with a self-righteous raid leader who dictates every skill, piece of gear and action to every player in the group.
I’m sure there will be an ‘optimal’ raid party makeup for each raid wing. That doesn’t mean that it will be mandatory. I know one of my own characters can spread big stacks of regen to the party without sacrificing much to do it. I am quite sure that the ‘holy trinity’ is not being ‘forced down our throats’. Get creative, tweak your build instead of venting about the fact that full-zerker may not be meta all the time and everywhere as it has been for 3 straight years.
They could give a Lv 500 chef a small chance to get back an ingredient used in a recipe (similar to how building siege in WvW sometimes gives back some of the supply used). They could also make it so that chefs could double or triple a recipe to double or triple the duration of the food buff.

I think it would be reasonable for A-Net to just tell us what will be needed to unlock elites, unless they are still working that out. It’s not like that is some kind of ‘spoiler’ that will impact anyone’s fun. On the contrary, it would be a lot more fun to be ready on launch day. I have 17 lv. 80 toons, and some have barely any map completion due to spending all their time in WvW. PvE players would be the ones whining if the unlocks were dependent on WvW content. I want to play elite specs in WvW, but I don’t really think I should need to grind PvE content to do it, any more than I think that a PvE player should be forced into WvW.
Absolutely! + 1 million.
Just add an additional ( invisible?) 1% to the account MF buff for every ‘subpar’ drop, and remove the extra MF whenever an ‘over-par’ drop occurs. Basically, just fudge the MF upward until a player is compensated for getting garbage instead of goodies.
OMG, I pooped in my pants for nothing! Now let’s see, where did I put that list of other things I was planning to whine about?…
Hey now, there’s a small chance that A-net might just slap the Dro0d together and accidentally make it OP! …And then neglect to make any changes to it for 3 years.
