There are soooooo many bigger issues than this. Arguing over this is akin to debating the proper arrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic.
The community has been giving you this feedback in thousands upon thousands of posts for years. Only now that things have reached a true crisis point on A-Net’s end is there any real action… or is it still just talk about possible future action? If WvW is not fixed next month so that it’s fun again, I’ll be leaving the game permanently. I’m tired of playing this useless waiting mini-game… or is it a jumping puzzle… or maybe a legendary collection of ignored forum posts?
The longer I go without logging in, the more I realize that HoT sucked the fun out of my play experience. What we got was a hollow shell of what we were led to expect. Don’t worry though, I’m sure we’ll all pre-purchase Ex-Pac 2. I hear it’s going to be LEGENDARY.
See that tiny speck in the distance? That’s the WvW overhaul!
Oh, wait, it’s just another mini-game they’ll call an “achievement”.
Either way, legendary or otherwise, this game has truly become Grind Wars 2. The last thing I care about is some shiny ‘legendary’ that requires days of mind-numbing grind. I came here for the WvW combat, and if that’s ever fixed I’ll start playing (and spending) again.
I used to play 4-6 hours in WvW almost every day because it was fun. I haven’t logged in for over a month because the Desert Boredom Lands are not fun, at all. It’s really that simple.
A-net only cares about keeping players hoping for the product they will never deliver so the gem-store sales will maybe pay the salaries of the skeleton crew they have left. Anyone who thinks that A-net now suddenly and truly cares about making WvW a great game mode needs to switch to a different beverage.
Whatever they do, I just hope WvW has more jumping puzzles, and especially minigames. And let’s not forget the new tokens, currencies and miscelleaneous item collections. Because we ALL know that WvW players are just really (secretly) into PvE… right Colin?
So, after years of ignoring the thousands of posts on these forums giving constructive feedback, the devs finally post elsewhere that they are just beginning to take it seriously. This is supposed to be cause for joy and fanboy cheering? After they ignored all of the pleading for changes to the Deserted Boredom Lands during beta? I’ll believe it when I see the wonderful changes. My bet is on more mini-games, jumping puzzles and PvE gimmicry, because that’s all I’ve actually seen A-Net produce lately. Sorry not to jump on the wishful thinking bandwagon…

Wake me up when WvW is about balanced large-scale PvP again. Until then, my wallet is closed and I’ll spend my time on games that provide something more engaging and challenging. I used to play at least 4 hours a day on average, probably more like 6 hours. I haven’t actually even bothered to log in for dailies in two weeks. I have 27 characters and tons of gem-purchased swag on them. I know lots of players who fit the same description. A-net basically shot their golden goose, and then ran over for good measure.
This game will never have good RvR again. WvW has been destroyed beyond any hope of recovery, certainly not on a vague promise of “soon”, turning into “late 2016” turning into… never. RvR lovers like me will need to look elsewhere and hope another studio can do it right.
Look, at the moment, EotM gives better fights and better rewards than WvW, especially the Deserted Boredomlands. Even EBG is less than fun/queued most of the time. Until WvW is fixed (more fun, better rewards) all the whining and cajoling in the world won’t change player behavior. WvW is dead; as we all can see, anything they do will be far to little, far too late. CU in CU or Crowfall…
Just think how this would all be different if they had prioritized WvW over raids. They’d have so many more players. The player base would have grown instead of tanking. Such a sadly squandered opportunity.
The silence is deafening. They have nothing to share with us. CU in CU, or Crowfall. Unless they have something really amazing up their…. sleeve. LOL, nahgunnahappen!
As soon as a decent RvR alternative (CU, Crowfall, whatever) comes out, I will stop logging in sporadically as I do now. A-Net has dropped a giant steaming kitten on their own end-game, and it stinks like rotting roadkill kittens. How sad and frustrating…
This is a LTD issue… LEARN TO DESIGN.
I’d pay 200 gems per month for a monthly pass to a WvW tournament that runs weekly on the Alpine border maps.
If you want to duel, go to the Deserted Boredomlands. No one else will be there, and there’s plenty of room.
Can’t people just have their little duels in a guild arena now? That would fix the problem with holding a ‘private event’ in a RvR map.
Ahahahahahaaaaa! Call me in early 2017, if anything actually changes.
WvW originally was about groups of players fighting each other over territory, using character skills and siege weapons All the other kittening kittened kitten kitten PvE and gimmics they’ve thoughtlessly spammed into it is the real problem. They’ve taken a massive dump in their own food bowl.
WvW never made it out of Beta. Welcome to the Eternal Betagrounds.
Well-said, Soon. I’m playing BnS now. It’s not as good as WvW used to be, but it’s miles better than Grind Bores 2 post-HoT.
So some of the beta-release type bugs are fixed now, in a game that’s been out of beta for 3 years.
Sssssslooooowwwwww Claaaaaaaaaaaaaap.
Yeah, that’ll happen. For sure.
Got two toons set up on BnS already, which would never have happened otherwise. Those dollars would have gone to gems if WvW weren’t so trashed. We’ll see how open world PvP there compares to WvW here…
Development timelines are mostly guesstimates since it is nearly impossible to properly estimate development effort. They probably shot for most of the WvW work to be in HoT but likely just had to pull the cord and do a partial delivery.
Collin clearly stated that they will be focusing on what’s been ‘most successful’. The WvW and guild changes have been a disaster, not a success. Therefore, they will be focusing on other ‘successes’ and leaving WvW to bleed out.
A ‘partial delivery’ results in a dead baby.
Look, everyone: follow the money. Collin clearly said they would be focusing on the things that have been ‘most successful’, and in our corporate culture, successful = profitable. Popularity brings profits. They have poured money/time into the design of DBL maps and guild upgrades. For WvW, these investments have brought a negative return on investment.
Therefore: WvW will get no further significant investment anytime soon. Collin said so himself: They are focusing on their successes, and WvW is a failure!. The dream is over. WvW will be left to bleed out. No number of impassioned forum posts will make an iota of difference.

Great post! In my opinion it’s too late to stop the snowballing effect the WvW ‘improvements’ have already had. Players looking for fights are finding them lacking, and so they leave. The more players leave, the more others are motivated to do so. We are already well past the point of no return in all but the top 1 or 2 tiers. Sorry to say it, but game over.
My feedback to A-Net: Your goal is to trick me into thinking that grind-gated and time-gated useless junk is actual content, and that cheap and cheesy PvE mechanics are more interesting that real RvR combat.
That’s your game A-Net, and YOU LOSE.
Scared, maybe. But more likely they have calculated that the manpower (money) needed to do so would not bring enough new income to justify doing it, especially after the epic failure of the DBL. Management has probably made a decision to let it bleed to death quietly (why else the silence?).
Every time someone logs into the Desert Border Lands, God kills a kitten. Save the kittens, kill the DBL.
Not if defenders get to keep and open the fat chest by defending the keep for X minutes.
Exactly. Game over, man. Very sad for all of us. Sit here and cry a bit if you need to. Turn off the lights when you leave.
Yup, but a fat chest in the keep and people will be rushing to storm it. Simple, really.
NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN. As noted, WvW is not a driver of the bottom line income for GW2. WvW will be left to die on the back burner. Read between the lines in Colin’s message: GAME. OVER.
This says everything there is to say about the state of WvW:
It may still be twitching, but it’ll never get up and run again.
Guys, the horse is already dead. It may still be twitching, but it will never get up and run again. Besides, after the epic failure of the Deserted border lands, no more money is going to be spent on this game mode. No business survives by ‘throwing good money after bad’. I’m not staying until flies feast on the carcass of this mangy beast. Feel free to stay here and beat it until the stink gets to you though.
Open-world PvP isn’t quite the same as WvW (which was epic at first!) but it’s much, much better than what WvW has become. I’m going over to a game that excels at open-world PvP.
The bottom line is that A-Net badly misread what its market wanted, delivering mostly the exact opposite. It’s not P2W, but it’s broken balance and PvE intrusion into WvW that killed it for me. I’m done, and very sad about it. I’ll linger on the forums occasionally to see whether anything changes (it won’t, because they won’t be throwing more money at this, ever) while I actively play a different game (on which I just spent what I normally would have put into gems).
It’s sad that WvW used to be SO much fun, and now I just can’t do it anymore. I want to believe it can/will be turned around, but I know better. I’ll check in from time to time in the hopes of some great ‘surprise fix’, but down deep I know it’s never coming. I’ve already spent the money I would normally drop on gems on premium access to another title.
Sigh Over 5,000 hours invested in this game, 23 characters, so many gemstore items bought all makes it hard for me to leave, but leaving I am. I’ll probably keep checking back in for a while, hoping for a surprise that will never come, but the fun has just been beaten out of this game by an escalating series of counterproductive design changes. Sad, sad, sad.
I WILL find a game that has excellent RvR gameplay… at some point. ESO was not it, but GW2 used to be. If GW2 can’t be my game, perhaps CU, Crowfall or another game will be. I hope the developers read and take all the feedback in these forums seriously, because the players posting all want to love this game, but the game has drifted away from the promises it made and left us feeling jilted.
Simple solution: Banners are only usable when you have the outmanned buff.
Not everyone who loves WvW is in a guild, nor should they be forced to join one. A-Net needs to quit trying to make WvW into just another PvE zone and bring back the RvR on the Alpine maps. Time to do so is short. The more people quit, the more will follow due to the fact that a depopulated WvW, even on the alpine maps, simply isn’t fun.
When you’re sailing on the Titanic, rearranging the deck chairs makes it look like you’re doing something….
Working as intended.
I love everything you suggest. The Ins interview is a must-watch, because he nails it, as do you OP!
Suppose that A-Net gave us a choice (they won’t), and we could have either EotM map or desert BL map for WvW. Which would you choose and why?
I’d take EotM over DBL simply because there is much better opportunity for fights on that map. Both maps have annoying PvE spam slapped into them, but at least EotM is better laid out for actual RvR combat.
What do you think?
I have 22 lv. 80 toons, and none of them is my ‘main’. They all have different builds and skills, and I play them all regularly. I guess you’d say their role is killing things (especially opposing players!).
