FIRST OF ALL, Nearly every class can use sword and all those sword skills (guard, warrior, ranger, thief, mesmer, and possibly revenant) are just standard melee skills (cuts, slashes, blinks, dodge, etc) which are things dagger kinda already does. -.-

Actually dagger doesn’t really do any of these things. LW is the closest to a cut or slash and can only be used in 1/4 attune, all other autos aren’t even close. It has no blinks and the only evade is BS, very rarely used for just an evade. It has no blocks, blinds, daze, stun(I guess you could count shock aura? but its not on command so can’t interrupt channeling) So no, sword is not just dagger. Dagger is also not true melee and has no auto attack chains.

Summoning storms around you like Locus swarm and instant aoes at an enemies location like Hunter’s call without having to ground target would make me more excited

OH GOD NO!! HAVE YOU NOT PLAYED WITH SCEPTERS?? PLEASE NO ABILITIES WITHOUT GROUND TARGETING.

I Would go further into explain why WH sucks but you can open any thread and read about it. I have yet to see a argument showing that WH is a better choice than Sword other than “I think it’s cool” and “the new spec will make ele better”, um yeah sure but whats that have to do with WH?

Do you not play ranger or know how it works even slightly? Its an ability without ground targeting or a target wise guy. You just press the button and it works if you are close enough to the enemy. You can even move away and the birds will still attack it.

edit:

You are not a thief. Sword do not daze or stun because other classes don’t have the mechanics for stealth attacks and dual attacks. Don’t ask for things that don’t come from swords directly.

Main hand swords do not block. You are thinking of offhand swords. If you want to be given an offhand sword instead of a main hand you can just ask.

You are an elementalist. In all weapon sets the aoe capability of the auto attack is modified by the attunement. You are not going to get a sword with 4 cleaving autoattacks. That is like asking for chain lightning to be a single attack that behaves like fireball because you want it to be so.

Discussion on potential WH role

Right now ele lacks utilities that provide team support. I don’t expect warhorn to be a dps weapon since the other 3 classes that use them are support, giving boons cleansing conditions dazing. I expect probably 2 new blast finishers. I’d love to have a field on every attunement. Ice field, fire field, static field. Hopefully its 900 range and not 600 otherwise it would be a struggle to find its use in wvw. For the utilties I predict group support. The heal with probably suck knowing anet.

Um?

Scepter already has good pairings with both /D and /F for either:

-Take /D for high mobility and extra damage in a tanky-ish fresh air spec.
- Take /F for great active defenses and range in a max-burst build

The problem is not the lack of a suitable off-hand. The problem is terrible auto-attacks and a few dead skills that weight the weapon down.

Wouldn’t you like mobile damage that doesn’t root you like churning earth?

S/D seems like an oddity. (am I suppose to be close to them or far). And S/F makes you lose damage to defense.

Tempest Warhorn Skill Predictions [merged]

Daniel Handler.4816

So unimaginative.
Warhorn is guaranteed to have either a cascading aoe or a mobile aoe. Neither dagger nor focus can provide that.

The damaging aoes from warhorn are always superior (Birds, locusts) the specialization will being something even grander.

“Cascading aoe” um we have this, lots of it frost bow 4, staff fire 5, glyph of storms, GS 5, hammer 4….

“mobile aoe” the mobile aoe in this game (very little amout of) is very lacking in damage and utility compared to positioned aoe (for good reason it allows escape). The only effective mobile aoe is called cleave, and it happens to be a part of melee weapons, one is quite often called a sword.

The specialization has nothing to do with the discussion between sword and war-horn as the spec would apply to them and all other weapons. What it brings would have been equivalent, independent of the weapon, so using that argument to support WH is silly.

Now using the spec argument to argue if it will be able to compete with our current 1:arcane/water 2:cantrips and 3:elite skills is speculation, but likely going to be answered as 1:no, probly the 3rd spot, 2:highly unlikely, they havent been able to since beta 3:could they honestly do worse.

Dude, no idea what you are talking about.

No cascading aoes exist in the game at this point (beyond revenant), phoenix comes close. And the only mobile aoe that exists in the game (beyond revenant) is the necromancer shroud 4 skill.

This is a mobile aoe https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Field_of_the_Mists
And this is a cascading aoe https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Coalescence_of_Ruin

But instead you want a garbage sword that can hit 3 targets that are in front of you. Yeah……

Tempest Warhorn Skill Predictions [merged]

Daniel Handler.4816

For example:
Fire Warhorn Skill 4: Create a field of fire around the user that deals damage and periodically inflicts burning. Drains mana each second (upkeep).

^ This would be the most basic example I can think of. So while in air attunement casting lightning whip, you would be dealing additional damage from your fire form.

Water Warhorn Skill 4: Create a field of water around you that heals you and nearby allies and periodically chills foes. Drains mana each second (upkeep)

Air Warhorn Skill 4: Create a static field around you that stuns foes and periodically inflicts vulnerability. Drains mana each second (upkeep)

Earth Warhorn Skill 4: Create swirling sands around you that grants you and allies additional armor/toughness and periodically applies blind to nearby foes. Drains mana each second (upkeep)
-
Fire 5: Create a storm of fire at target location that deals heavy damage and burns foes.
(Consumes a large amount of mana)

Water 5: Create an ice storm at target location, chilling and bleeding foes.
Water 5 alternative: Create a storm of water that heals allies and chills foes.
(Consumes a large amount of mana)

Air 5: Create a storm of lightning that stuns foes and inflicts vulnerability
(Consumes a large amount of mana)

Earth 5: Create a sand storm that blinds foes
Earth 5 alternative: Create quicksand at target location, pulling foes and slowing them.
(Consumes a large amount of mana)

So basically #4 A-net will create auras that do exactly what the aura does, except every second, instead of when where attacked and:
5 is glyph of storms taking 4 skills instead of 1 utility…

who would give up focus/dagger for that?

Warhorn can’t bring us anything we dont already have.

Things we don’t have (or have reasonable access to):
Evading attacks
blocks/counter attacks
stealth
weapon teleports
effective daze
auto attack chains
burst that doesn’t require rotating through multiple atunements (thats not kittening burst)

Things swords provide:
Teleports
blocks
evades
burst
auto attack chains

Things warhorn would provide:
Boons
cone aoe/ area target aoe
team support

Things we have and have had forever:
Boons
cone aoe/ area target aoe
team support

Do you see why no one wants this?

So unimaginative.

I’m confused why this thread exists. You seem to just want the trait removed. Please create another thread for that topic. The trait can’t exist with a cd on it. It is far too unpredictable. Either suggest another trait in its place or stop making indirect threads. And the fact that you choose to harp on this trait rather then CS or PU is quite suspicious.

leave the kitten ed manta’s alone! to be honest, I could live with CS being deleted entirely, I tend to rely more on CI and PB for lockdown, with harmonious mantras to increase my counterplay. Make CS have another effect, hell make it simply double the duration of stuns and dazes, or maybe increase it’s effect to include moa and leave it as a simple +50% increase to control effects. But do not start talking about nerfing mantra’s which are used well outside of CS builds without seriously thinking about the ramifications.

This is also acceptable. Mental Anguish and Confounding Suggestions need to switch though.

Easiest solution to PU

in Mesmer

Daniel Handler.4816

This is a horrid idea, for the simple reason that hidden caps on how things work are always bad practice. By hiding basic and important mechanics, it makes the game legitimately difficult for both new and old players to understand (like actually difficult, not the ‘difficulty’ that was touted as the cause for the old new player experience).

If there’s an issue with stealth stacking, then fix it directly by changing how long skills last or how you can boost them. Don’t slap a bandaid on by saying ‘oh, well, you can use all these skills…but surprise!!! they don’t work now. Why? Oh, you know…reasons. How were you supposed to know? Oh, you know…we figured you wouldn’t notice/care.’

The proper way to fix PU would be to nerf it to 50% duration, then buff veil to base of 4s, and MI to a base of 7s.

Edit: And besides, this wouldn’t fix anything anyway, you’d just have to time your stacking a bit more carefully, but you could still sustain it as long as you can now by being careful about not hitting the cap.

What on earth are you talking about? This is how normal stealth works now. It is capped at 18-20 seconds. It is Hide in Shadows (mesmer stealth) that is messed up.
As for your edit I will review my math.

No, I think that’s a bad idea.

What would be the point of PU’s double duration if you can’t make use of doubling your duration? More preferably, just adjust the duration PU increases rather than create some hidden cap. 25~75% increase instead should be good.

I am confused about your second sentence? How wouldn’t you be able to make use of the doubling?

Well they like symmetry. They wanted 3 class of each armor. They wanted one class for each armor without weapon swap (ele, engineer, revenant), now they can very well have one class per armor type with decent access to stealth (mesmer, thief, revenant).

The existence of ranger and engie kinda throws off your symmetry thing, but nice try. Also trapper runes + dragon hunter = stealthing heavy.

Necro literally cannot defeat a mesmer in single combat. The best you can hope for is the mesmer makes a bunch of mistakes and decides to retreat, but you won’t kill him.

Even if Anet took my suggestion and we could see invisible enemies, we’d still lose to mesmers but it would be a step in the right direction for the necro vs mes matchup.

There is no us verses them. You think to much in 1v1 . I support the ESP in shroud , I would add it to deathly perception. That way you can be cced and you dont get to use DS as a stunbreaker and xray vision.

I think I would be fair in saying that mesmer is more heavily based to dueling than any other class (we even have a trait line for that), heck our specialization is around gaining aoes. By contrast a necro is one of the most aoe heavy classes in the game, you guys can excel in areas mesmers can only dream of.

Please don’t suggest balances around 1v1s. I would prefer to not tie my damage to things that explode at the slightest damage. I would enjoy aoe wrecking people without relying on bounces or dodge rolls. Just remember this as the thread goes on. 1v1 duels in pvp are not the only thing that exists.

Mesmer won some duels surprising lol. Glad you made one and won some duels. Duels are not cause for nerfing. Also Mesmer has improved but if you would have taken a ele/guard the results would have been even better for helping your party. Mesmer has burst but far from those other classes healing condition removal stability sharing on top of damage.

Won some duels? We’re winning every even fight we get into. If it for some reason doesn’t go our way we just stealth, regroup, and (our 5 mesmers can get 50 seconds of stealth just from using the elite and not counting utilities or torch) There’s no point in running a guardian because every mesmer in the party can invis for a very long time (especially when running torch) and recover from anything. I don’t need protection because I’ve got blurred frenzy, distortion, blink, torch invis, decoy, mass invis. I don’t need heals because when traited the mantra heals/clears are OP and broken in my opinion.

It’s kittened. I don’t bother playing any other class because if I want to not die ever, then I just run mesmer.

Um. You realise you need to take camps right? Just fighting is not really the point. You are a fly on the wall to the score. The easiest way to real with PU it just to ignore it. Also I doubt you won all fights.

It doesn’t say they aren’t, but there is a higher burden of proof to labeling something a magic user when technically magic infuses everything in the dimension. One normally applies the descriptor to guardians/mesmers/necros/elementalists where the use of magic can be sorted by school, and it is not an indirect use of magic like appealing to nature spirits.

Proposal to mesmer mechanic change

The entire premise is flawed. Invisibility is a Mesmer thing.
Stealth<- the stealth produced by thieves and comboing with smoke fields, semi magical
Hide in shadows<- the stealth mesmer’s produce by bending light and sound, fully magical (why do you think veil is a light field?)
Camoflauge<- the stealth rangers produce by using nature magic, semi magical
engie stealth< elixirs which mimic stealth, not magical

The lore is very clear on this.

It is quite literally l2p. I know I sound somewhat bias in that assessment, but think about it. The class is based around confusion, (literal and the condition). We have more interrupt traits than any other class, we still remain in gw2 a class devoted to locking down opponents. Take all the “brokenness” of stealth and add a class that doesn’t attack you directly most of the time. Add in the general hate of AI.

We are the class that punishes people who lack restraint or experience, which is every new player ever.

snip
Somebody already gave the example of using short CD mesmer bursts to bait long CD mitigations in other classes, interspersed with long stealths that prevent counter bursts. That’s not an l2p issue, that’s an imbalanced counterplay problem. Sure, fighting stealthy thieves sucks, but they’re mostly on a tether that allows more counter play.

You were going so well on the logic train until you went straight into a wall.

Short CD Mesmer bursts> bait long CD mitigation> interspersed with long stealths

ooooooooooooh snap. Where the hell did those long stealths come from? From long CD mitigation. You described how all combat works in the game, and you accuse it of being broken because it doesn’t go in your favour.

Solution, burst the Mesmer with short CD skills to bait a long CD mitigation (stealth). Then intersperse with your own mitigations to prevent counter responses. Hopefully no one from our community comes to your forums to call you OP.

Which parts of the lore annoy or depress you?

I’ll look it but, but I recall that Drakes are actually not related to dragons such as Glint or the elder dragons. Remember, GW doesn’t follow typical fantasy creatures exactly. Incubuses are bat like beings. Bats are more like big lizards. What says Drakes are explicitly tied to dragons?

The wiki says drakes are tied to dragons…

That’s not what I asked either. “Magic being around” is not a direct act of the gods during that period. Sure, it was released by them perhaps, but it’s not like to cast lightning I HAVE to pray to Dwayna. Balthazar doesn’t personally spawn every fireball thrown. The way I took your statement was as if GW2 literally kicked the gods to the curb and in GW1 they were actively involved in the world. Which they really weren’t. FoW and UW is about the most, and that’s simply spawning a portal.

FoW and UW were supposed to be Balthazars and Grenths personal realm in the Mists. And it’s not a direct link like an AD&D cleric praying to his deity, but it is similar. The gods gave magic to Tyria(most of it anyway), and then curtailed its use because of Doric’s plee and split magic into 4 schools to limit its destructive power. Basically, every time you cast a spell in GW1 it was because the gods let you.

You are arguing semantics. When I say “Human gods” I OBVIOUSLY refer to the SIX GODS, who directly tie to HUMANITY. Not that they ARE HUMAN. But they are the GODS OF THE HUMANS.

They were the gods of everyone on Tyria, whether they believed in them or not. Why? Because they gave magic to the world that everyone used equally, Charr, human, and Aloe alike. Oh and there were no other gods in Tyria…until GW2. I’m sure humanity never mentions it because of that whole “human bias” cop-out.

Gave magic is not a good way of saying that they realised some from the bloodstone.

My biggest annoyance with the lore is the Living Story, and much of what it brings. Not only is lore malleable to make room for a terrible quality story, but the LS tries to make game mechanics into lore, eg: Waypoints.

Waypoints actually existing in lore now is probably my biggest beef with the lore at this time. Instant transportation like that invalidate a great deal of what is done in a fantasy setting, including in GW2 along side Waypoints. What is the purpose of merchant ships, merchant caravans, and the like if we can simply toss the goods to be transported though a Waypoint? Additionally for the transportation of people, soldiers and the like, the existence of Waypoints invalidates a lot of the logistical aspects there, including bringing reinforcements to front lines of conflicts.

While discussing this issue with guildies, the common fan canon that was used was that the operation of Waypoints is prohibitively expensive, thus they do exist but yet their existence does not invalidate much of the game’s lore. And now in the new LA we have random NPC’s using Waypoints all the time /shrug more stuff to ignore and pretend Anet never included I guess

This is actually rather similar to how the Personal Story kind of wrote the story into a corner. Anet wanted us to be an individual in some very powerful role of the largest military force in the land… however that was at complete odds with any other story they wanted to go with, so in the LS we found that we were inexplicably out of a job as second in command of the largest military force of the land… not only that our position of trust and people’s respect for the main character suddenly vanished without explanation, since even though we knew of Scarlets planned LA attacks and all that. No one would listen to us and we needed to group up with some misfits where it is still not explained WHY we are even hanging around them.

For these reasons, from a lore/RP perspective I generally ignore much of both the Personal and Living Stories, because the [very poor quality] story is the worst enemy of the [wonderful] lore much of the time in this game.

So this is a popular one where people think role play is invalidated by the use of teleports. You see it in many games, once you can fast travel somewhere it removes some of the immersion. However this does not mean there is not room in the lore for this fast travel.

For example in The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. You can conduct the wind to lift your boat to certain locations, and you no longer have to sail. You miss some of the beauty of the game, but there is nothing amazingly unusual going on.

In Gw1 http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Map-Travel_Inventor we have this terrible part of lore.

Personally I think waypoints are very positive for lore. You need to remember some things:

  • waypoints travel between waypoints, there will always be voyages, and transporting thing, we have seen no indication large objects can be waypointed
  • not everything is near a waypoint. If my party is traveling to a destination between me and a waypoint, why would I use one?
  • contested, RPers, make the waypoint contested. It really isn’t that hard. Or make it so a person can’t use a waypoint because they havent discovered it, or they are sick, or they dont have money.

I guess I can finally post my bunker build.

Completely capable of bunkering 1v3 on a point.

Depending on the situation
temporal enchanter>illusionary inspiration
bountiful disillusionment>chaotic interruption
null field>mantra of concentration>signet of inspiration

I haven’t tried a bunker build but there appear to be some holes in your build from what I can tell just from general pvping experience.

I don’t think Mantras are good for holding a point because they are hard to recharge without some cover for it. A class with good cc (lockdown mesmer/theif) will be able to lock you out pretty easily every time you attempt a charge. Having 3 mantras means alot of charging and I don’t see it working for hold pointing. One person can completely shut you down, let alone 3.

quite simple. bountiful disillusionment provides stability. Vs class with lots of interrupts you switch the null field for mantra of concentration.

Also @fay, distortion, aegis, blurr, blind, are all active defenses.

You have no stunbreak in that base build. You could certainly take the mantra, but in the build you’ve posted, You would get 100-0 by the first shatter burst mesmer that showed up. Approach in stealth, MoD stun into full burst and you die instantly.

Edit: Even with the mantra, it can be tough to stunbreak in time. I’ve certainly been instagibbed by people a good number of times already, though I’ve been trying to keep a sharp eye on every mesmer in a match now.

distortion. bountiful disillusionment. need I say more?

BD doesn’t break stuns. It can keep you from getting stunned, but as long as the mesmer doesn’t MoD into your 1 stack of stability, they’ll stun you all the same.

Distortion can stop that burst, for sure. Unfortunately, a power mesmer has the option to restealth and burst roughly (realistically) once every 7-10 seconds or so, and distortion is only available once every 50. On top of that, the whole burst executes in <1 second, if they’re good. It’s possible to distortion to avoid that, but it’s not easy.

Also “good” is relative. A 1 second burst from a good mes is one approach, but there’s also less predictable assaults that can be made, all with a slew of CC coming your way. Realistically that 1s burst combo with the chance of a CS stun proc is the least of your worries from a “good” mesmer. And that’s before we even get into D/P thieves.

Again this is why mantra of concentration is a variation. But it is by no means a necessity. One can dodge while dazzed, as well as stunbreak with swap and move away with phase retreat. I have yet to be 100-0 by any class anyway. So if they don’t do enough damage to finish, responding is much easier.

Mantras now begin cooling down the second they are charged.

The base continuous charge is

The overly pale skins of humans in Kryta.
Sorry, but it does bother me.
Krytans in GW1 were darker skinned, with tattoos aplenty, and sometimes even tight-braided hair.
Elonians reflect various sahelian African cultures. (and superbly, oh MAN superbly)
Canthans reflect both heavily bodypainted central Asians and a more Eastern vibe.

Given the admixture, and the chronology of the various waves of migration, it just always bothers me how pale-skinned modern Krytans are. If I have my timeline right, it’s Kryta + Ascalon, to which Cantha’s refugees get added, and then waves of Elonian migrants arrive as Joko conquers each state, ending perhaps fifty years ago.

This doesn’t bother you at all? That a game is playing heavily into a cultural vibe that they get wrong. Because from what I understand Gw2 was getting enough negative feedback from their Asian fanbase that they removed the Canthan district entirely. Why can’t black people be ninjas? Is it really that hard to invent a ninja-esque culture and have them not be Asian?

Beyond that, anyone overly pale may just be in a royal line or some other closed off breeding line.

There actually may be another issue although I’d have to check the patch notes to see if it is in. The WvW rank that offers vitality. I don’t know about others but I’d use this to buff up vitality in my dps/zerk set.

I thought I heard that those are going away. If so this may hurt or bother some players.

Mimic and Mantras (sequential skills etc...)

in Mesmer

Posted by: Daniel Handler.4816

Daniel Handler.4816

Mimic is scripted to only affect mantra actives. If you cast a mantra active it will recharge in 1 second (generally I wouldn’t advise this since most mantra actives recharge in 1-2s). If you use a mantra preparation skill while Mimic is active nothing happens since the preparation skill goes away to be replaced with the active.

Portal is a special case for Mimic. Only Portal Exeunt will consume the Mimic charge and it will cause the portal entrance skill to recharge in 1 second. You can cast mimic, then portal entrance without consuming the mimic charge.

If you use mimic before using the last charge will the cooldown for the mantra be affected? Also can you gives us a heads up on the functionality for mimic and mantras when f5 is concerned? Which takes priority, mimic or f5?

What happens when I use mimic and charge a mantra. How does that compare to when I use mimic and use a mantra charge. Similarly, if I use mimic and cast portal entre, then I cast portal exeunt, is the recharge on entre 72 or 1? And for the reverse if I cast portal entre, then cast mimic, then cast portal exeunt, what is the effect?

Design a build for the new traits.

  1. it cannot use any trait that has stealth in the wording.
  2. all weapons are available, but weapon skills cannot be used to gain stealth
  3. you cannot use utilities that can give stealth (hide in shadows, smoke bomb, shadows refuge, shadow trap)

good luck
