What is your trait setup? I would go with Gear that helps round out your Traits. For example, if you have plenty of Toughness but little Vitality you might want to go Dire. If the opposite is true then Rabid would be a better option.

Depends on how you have your character setup. You a condition or power build?

No setup yet, I just dont want to invest into one type of gear if a mix is the best option. Similar to the elementalist mixes.

Whatever works best for small scale roaming, 1v1 encounters in wvw. People say dire,

so entirely dire gear with rabid trinkets?

I just hit 80 on my necromancer and could really use advice as to what gear to pick up for wvw…. small scale and roaming – 1v1.

I want to play to the class strengths not be a snowflake.

I dont know if I should mix and match but really could use some guidance here if someone could post some builds with gear for this

I use this build for wvw and spvp. Just recently though ive been doing more spvp.

Confined spaces do hurt such as skyhammer… that being said the counter is there are also maps amplify the lb range

Fighting on point or being relatively useless really depends on your team. If you frame the picture in such a small window sure this would hold true. I use the spec to roam and assist, not to fight 1v1… similar to a thieves role. Which does bring me to the original post where there is classes that do this better… ie a thief.

LB seems to do me just fine in spvp so far

Nope, no one was asking me about my build.
Its far from optimal for spvp, and when compared to other classes in specifics sure some will fill the role better.

I bought the game to play whats fun for me in my spare time, not whats optimal or what is the meta. Not taking away from others that may do this, its just not my cup of tea. Ive been angry with the game, but with the addition of read the wind I can live with my ranger longbow now.

While I agree with the op, we cant place the entire blame on the company. The player base that plays these specs are like water and take the path of least resistance.

Block that path and the next path of least resistance will be taken.

That being said, its anets slow response or absence that has made me look elsewhere now for my online gaming.

Thief will close that gap and kill you.
Warrior will pop stability and close the gap and kill you.
Mesmer will stealth and pretty much kill you with a shatter.
Guardian teleport and kill you.
Engineer will block/close that gap and kill you.
Necromancer will shrug off that damage and kill you.
Ele will do its role and go straight to downed state for you.
Splash damage from some random fps game will kill you.

I run full dire condi.
With food/crystal + condi stacks from sigil of corruption I have 2220 condition damage (this is with undead runes and the trait strength of stone)

Scepter earth auto bleeds @ 25 stacks will tick for 3284 or something. Its nearly impossible to get 25 stacks as they will drop off around 7-9 stacks.

The burn always does about 900. No matter the weapon set.

Ive tried to make scepter/dagger & scepter focus work quite a kittenurning earth is too long of a cast to make it worthwhile.

Ive settled on using staff for its utility.
In wvw though as asuran staff condi, I run radiation field with elemental surge + arcane wave for aoe burn.

This leaves open one utility for either a stunbreaker or if you wanted signet of water for a chill. Which gives me 3 condis I can keep up with the poison not being optimal.

Still though, its no condi necro but fun to watch 280 poison ticks, 1100 bleed ticks, 900 burn ticks followed with lava font/meteor storm – tornado on a supply camp.

all that while having 18k health and nearly 3k armor

SPvP: Three Minutes Build

Not reinventing the wheel with this build, however ive come to enjoy this one the most now in spvp.

I have been toying with this build and its effectiveness for a week now. And with more than moderate success vs any class – which increases exponentially if you get the jump.

It applies so much pressure and actually takes advantage of the swords root attack which will follow PU mesmers & Teefs into stealth for at least 1 more hit.

-Open with call of the wild/Hunters Call.
-Use this at moderate range but enough room that you will close this gap to utilize
Signet of the Wild.
-Should this be a Thief you are attacking use the sic’em so they will eat most of the damage or blow their dodges (Can save the call of the wild for afterwards)

Once this initial burst is done, you still have the signet of stone + dodges of the dagger/sword and the heal still left w/vigor on it.

It has above average survivability combines with pressure that will definitely put whatever (single) target on the defensive.

The ONLY change I will make is at the beginning of each match depending how many necromancers/engies there are switching bark skin for empathic bond.

You can change the elite if you wish to ROA, in spvp I prefer the roots to force a stealth or other breaking skills. *Or use the lowered cooldown instead of the vigor on heal since this build has a lot of dodges as is with the immunity.

I use the double birds for the swiftness and the double attack which each have a chance to crit. Also their f2s both apply a decent bleed.

Gave spvp a good go, leveled a character 1-nearly 80 now in it… that being said once I hit that cap im done with it. (not exactly a threat but when the game isnt exactly bringing in the numbers 1 less playing spvp will add up overtime – no matter how anet tries to entice it in the future)

The 5v4’s im sure youve all had these and enough has been said about it.
I dont know why anyone should be ‘punished’ with dropping down in the leaderboards due to other players disconnects.

It really shows the overall spvp community being much like water, taking the path of least resistance – by using these passive specs. If you find this fun thats subjective sure.

For me, im just not into playing these or being fodder for them. So all in all, pretty shallow as far as a gamemode with horrible dominant specs…. coupled with slow changes to the meta… leaves only the players content with playing anything thats op.

I think it’s because Ele is a complicated class to play. Those who master it can pull off some pretty epic combos and deal a lot of damage. Unfortunately the majority (myself included) don’t have that level of skill and therefore the Ele seems UP which really isn’t the case.

You think its a skill issue?
Like there is only a select few gamers that have tapped the potential of this class…
There are tons of threads in these forums that will point out the flaws with the traits and with that suggestions.

SD build in sPvP means you are a bad thief on range. No defense and less damage as mesmer/thief or ele. Played last week against a SD Build Engi. In sPvP rifle builds are too weak at the moment.

Odd since Lady Steamhawke is ranked 12? and uses a SD nade build

  • Each stack of dishonor has it’s own duration of 72 hours.
  • You can play until your account has 3 stacks of dishonor.
  • You cannot play until your account has less than 3 stacks. (Think of bleed stacks)
  • Dishonor stacks expire while offline.
  • Being kicked by AFK detection automatically adds a dishonor stack.
  • Being absent from a match will add a stack of dishonor when the match has ended.

Simple version: You can leave a maximum of 3 games every 3 day period. Those could be spread out: If you leave once a day, you effectively lock yourself out every 24 hours. They could be stacked quickly: Leaving 3 times in one day means and cannot play almost the maximum of 72 hours.

So you only increase your odds of being banned the more you play spvp…

Just throwing this out there, if I were to play some unreal number of games in one day say 1000 and have 3 disconnects…

I could see it if I played 10 games and had 3 disconnects.

1106 suggestions pre-patch, 0 were ok.

Friendly neighborhood Grouch here (oxymoron?). Starting in early January I’ll be working more closely with the Skills and Balance team and with you all as well. While our Skills/Balance designers do read the forums quite often, they don’t have as much time to post and drive discussion – and that’s what I’ll be stepping in to help with.

There are a lot of valid concerns with the elementalist right now and we’re going to be working on addressing those points. Once everyone gets back from holiday vacation we’ll be posting up our proposed balance changes and we’ll go from there.

Both water fields are from healing turret. One on the f1 key and one on the turret.

On my bunker/bomb build engie which is no secret build. Here is the HPS
+32HPS With dolyak Runes
+188HPS Backpack Regen
+368HPS Bomb Heals (Which is nice when you combine with the bombs off the dodge)
+232HPS Elixer Gun Regen
=820 HPS

This still leaves me blast finishing my healing turret/f1 when needed
Blocks etc.

Of all the builds ive played on my engie, its by far the easiest.

yes there is a cast time to drop the mines and you have to hit the key a 2nd time to detonate them.

Also that engie has to be literally right ontop of you for those to all hit.

the hammer is the most telegraphed weapon.i have no problem dodging the attacks especially with ranged classes, and if I do get hit by the cc chain its easy to get out of or negate. ie: stun breakers,blinds,blink/shadowstep/infi strike, distortion….etc. hammer is indeed powerful if hit by the whole cc chain but your just bad if you do. this is indeed a l2p issue. hammer SHOULD NOT be nerfed…whats your opinion on warrior hammer?

What is the cast time on the hammer? How many spell effects are going off at the time… Are you in the middle of pressing another key.

In regards to WvW
I have no interest in playing a spirit ranger, so the buffs and changes here mean nothing to myself if not most rangers in WvW.
I love the overall class, but where is the responses to pet ai? Is there any?

Hunters Shot – Please make this hit in a cone or fire 3 arrows, as it fails more often than not for a ability that is suppose to help us kite.

Lightning Reflexes – Please combine this with a removal of 2 conditions

Pet AI and Abilities – Remove the f2 ability from the pet and allow rangers to use this on their own with or without the pet alive – as a bonus for selecting the pet.

Its a start.

Condition/regen is probably the strongest dueling build in the game.

BM/Regen With apothecary or Dire will not have enough regen nor condi removal to beat either a engi or necro in 1v1.

They also will not have the damage to take down a guardian within a reasonable timeframe.

Thieves are a hit and miss with this spec depending on their crits if they cnd/backstab and the overall skill level of them.

Thats half the classes isnt it? I dont see where this is one of the ‘strongest’.

I’d reiterate on this, I do happen to play a full zerker ranger in WvW, who is successful in both small and large scale fights. Granted, it’s very dicey taking them into small scale fights, so the positional awareness is key, as well as, knowing exactly when to use what little escape options you have.

I’ve played against nearly all servers and currently reside in Gold League. I rarely die to any thief (or mesmer) in any small scale or zerg fight.

You are right though pets are practically useless and we do die fairly quick, so the zerker build isn’t for those who don’t have good perception of what’s going on.

You must play vs some horrible thieves. Full zerker just about any thief that focuses you will finish you pretty quickly. I would LOVE to see a zerker ranger recover from a thief opening and win consistantly…

I love this class but dont see this happening.

1-Any group that runs through another group to just get the ranger is lacking in mental capacity.
2-Sword #2, Sword #3, even Sword #1 if you are awesome. GS #2, SB, #3, LB #3 and 4. Lighting Reflexes, Muddy Terrain, Hide in Plain Sight, Shared Anguish.
3-I play both. I kill with conditions and pet as a bunker and I stay alive for long periods of time as a zerk (see answer to number #2).
4-I know they don’t suck. Again, who sacrifices formation to kill one person/class?
5-Except for pet roots, knockdowns, cripples, chills, buffs to ranger and aoe effects.
6-I leveled my ranger to 80 in WvW on Anvil Rock

  1. i think most rangers play this stupid build because we are basically forced 30 points into wilderness survival for empathic bond. Otherwise in this current condi meta you would be eaten alive.

Not my cup of tea and would hope there would be more options then this. Feel Free to post any that dont involve 30 into wilderness survival.

Rangers are probably close to the strongest 1v1 class if not the strongest.

The only thing right now that gives me a run for my money is a Necro.

The Necro of course has trouble vs other classes..

I find this hard to believe. Im not by any means calling you a liar… just with the mass complaints in the forums etc and overall moral of the class would say otherwise.

Unless you know something about this class that others dont know. I dont think skillcap can be a reason since engineers dont have the same issues as rangers.

I would love to see some more fights vs theives and engineers in your videos

I think I just found a wicked Engineer build..5 seconds into the fight I see my health drop from 15k to 3k at the blink of an eye then bam, dead…kind of strange, engineers used to be easy =P I’m fairly tanky too

I play 6 different builds in WvW, and they are all very viable.

1. Regen condi bunker(S/T+SB) —> strongest one in 1vsX
2. Evasive power ranger (S/D+SB) --> very strong in 1vsX
2. Spike power ranger (LB+S/W) —> very very strong for hunting down any type of build in 1vs1 or small group
3. Shout supporter + heals condi/power(A/T+S/W) --> very good for group or zerg
4. Bunker power ranger (GS+LB) —> good in zergs
5. Spirit condi bunker ranger (S/T+SB) --> good in small groups
6 Trap condi ranger (S/D+A/T) —> very good in 1vsX

Imo we have many more options than most classes do, the only real problem is our pet and some bugs ( sword root for example )

The weapons that really need some love are GS and Axe, the damage is not that good, but they provide CC and escape.

Another big probem is that I need 90 bag slots for my equippements ( not joking ) !! I need a closet asap.

Dunno for Spvp, I don’t take it seriously, but I manage to have fun while I wait in queue

Dont mistake living longer as stronger… if youre doing less damage and just soaking more/taking more time to die. This has its place in spvp and while it does seem like you are doing more when fighting because it lasts longer. At no point in time was your opponent pressured and worried about dying.

I dont see how anyone would die to a bunker/condi ranger unless they let burning kill them.

Zerker Vs Bunker Damage

I enjoy a lot of the builds on the character but cant seem to find that happy medium for this class.

If I spec zerker, be it SD or Nade Hybrid whichever. My damage is noticeable for sure, however someone who is specced defensive/bunker like will do noticeable damage just the same to my character.

Im not understanding the trade off. Lower your defenses to the point where someone with little outgoing damage is increased = to yours.

Increase your defenses and throw pillows for damage, hope they get tired and fall asleep.

Im not a fan of HGH but not adverse to any builds otherwise. Any suggestions of a happy medium where, you can actually pressure a player into healing, yet not get mowed over without having something to break LOS?

So the fact pets can do damage while you are ressing someone makes the sub par mechanic of this class good? Lol.

Engineers, Necros, Mesmers, and others can do it as well…better most of the time. Other classes can do it, and dont even loose their F skills, or loose dps, or have weak power scaling due to their F abilities.

Engineers often run turret builds?
I dont see how any player got into this ranger class without some inclination that the dps would be tied into the pet. It is a pet class from creation, not through utilities.

My stats now are without food and in zerk

2443power / 3523 attack
1918 prec / 52% crit chance
1018 tough / 2160 armor
16404 vitality
100% crit damage bonus

Now keep in mind this is in the zerk gear – and I do have clerics/apothecary should that work better with a build that would work here.

Ill try the rampage/bread

I think the main issue is the poison doesnt seem to stick with the pets applications and the warriors removal.

Im just not seeing a trade off here, where they do the same damage if not more to me, if I spec into damage. Also if I spec to tank more damage I dont do enough to scratch them and yet they still happen to hit so hard its not much of a fight of attrition.

Again open to suggestions and going to try the above ones now.

If the warrior is not bunker build, a berserker ranger should have no problems killing him. Rangers can open with 5k LR shot, and immediatelly cast Rapid fire. Warrior will have to use Adrenal health before he makes it to melee. If he gets to melee with full health, ranger can use CD’s to have a good 12 seconds window of zero-ish damage taken, while hitting like a truck in the meantime.

I have yet to see a single 5k LR shot on a warrior. Even in full exotic beserker/ascended.
As I mentioned in the OP. I have dumped 2 full cooldowns of my longbow before any warrior can get to me – due to the stealth re-starting the fight for me.

They usually close the gap by then. Keep in mind most warriors will negate some damage at some point with the block on the shield should they weapon swap.

My longbow with zerk gear on will crit for roughly 1900 average on warriors (Some above 2k some below 1900)

I bring lightning reflexes, however it mainly being wvw I do, I normally have signet of the hunt on for the 25% speed increase.

Leaving me with one other slot.
Protect me is a stunbreaker and a damage mitigation, however it will most certainly get my pet killed most of the time.

Quickening Zephyr was great before the nerf but now its not worth the slot for one specific class. Also it can reduced healing by 50% when used. Seems really counter productive.

Im open to builds/suggestions as ill try just about anything because a good portion of what you see now in WvW is warriors.

I could turn to the rangers but they will just go on about their class and really dont think its the place right now to ask for help.

I currently play a ranger and just cant seem to find a way about dealing with warriors.
I have apothecary/beserker/cleric sets

If I do apothecary BM/Condi, it doesnt seem to do enough damage to break the healing signet/adrenal health enough to pressure a warrior.

Meanwhile even with lightning reflexes they will get a skullcrack/100b off before its off cooldown a 2nd time to break the stun.

If I spec into full on beserker, I have literally gone through my cooldowns on my longbow 2 times (because of the stealth – when it works) and should they close the cap which happens I cant sustain the damage through one engagement.

Cleric seems to have the same outcome as apothecary.

Is there any advice as to how and what will give a fighting chance here?

I also use pets that have poison for the reduced healing signet.
I dont know enough about the class to counter it.

Im still new overall at being level 80 with this class.
Still love to theorycraft and what better class to do that with then engies

Ok perplexity runes and where they stand as far as being nerfed can be saved for another thread.

That aside here is the idea. Which I dont have the micro management ability to pull off personally.

Vs some classes could you literally interupt / pushback with short intervals applying perplexity

Shield #4 aoe pushback 30 seconds – 24 with trait
Flamethrower #3 cone pushback 15 seconds – 12 with trait
Accelerated Turrets – Rifle Turret toolbelt aoe pushback 19 seconds
– Flame Turret toolbelt aoe pushback 24 seconds

Each has a chance to apply perplexity and peel enemy off teammates/yourself
Combine this with the blind from flamethrower or another turret/utility such as net turret for more control.

Engies, Really need some advice/help and tips from players with more experience with the class.

I finally hit level 80, and have Dire Gear with Rabid Accessories.
I really enjoy the pistol shield and combos off the healing turret & f1.
It would definitely have to be a pistol/shield build

Just really could use some tips on builds that would help with survival since there are so many defensive traits, im not really sure which or where to start.

I only wvw.

Ranger doesnt do what this class does…
No kidding. And guardians are slow at capping camps/killing yaks… scouting.
Necros have low mobility while we have great mobility and do they have a blast finisher?

2 sides to every coin really. Yes I understand these classes do some things better in areas of zerg lemming. There is nothing stopping us from playing those classes for that role.

If you want to homogenize the game more so every class is equal in all roles bleh, wait until you see the forums then.

Yes this class has some issues that will/can be worked on to improve it. The comparisons to other classes is getting old unless you show both sides.

Look, if ranger were THE BEST scout/soloer I’d be ok with us being THE WORST Zerg prof, but we aren’t, that role goes to the thief, they are THE BEST at mobility and have easy stealth making solo capping and scouting their role of choice. And know what? They’re still better than we are in a Zerg because of how easily they can Zerg surf with CnD and other stealths.

We are not asking to be THE SAME as every other prof we are asking to be BALANCED in large scale fights because we flat out aren’t.

There you have it, want to be the best solo’er role a thief? Rather than coming into the forums and moaning about it. Want to be the best condition aoe, role a necro.

You have all the answers youre looking for before anyone responds. Yet you punish yourself into playing the ranger still.

I play it because its fun for me, I could care less what it offers to some random player 50+ miles away from me in a random wvw encounter.

Its just the constant moaning and crying about it here in the forums, gets well old. Like flies trying to fly through a window just beating your heads thinking each time youre going to get through.

There will be changes to the classes, and rangers. How about something constructive in the forums rather than straight comparisons of apples and oranges?

Just joking, good rangers in WvW are underrated.

I like Ace… Higgens and crew. Maybe its the hours im online but the map chat recruitment for the wvw guilds with the ranger jokes pretty much is what brought me here to begin with.

Im on fort asp.

Again great realm for wvw, just looking for a place that could use a ranger. Ill respond and check out those here who responded though
