You could even throw out in the PvE world random Champions that enter the world from one side, simply walk across and out the other if they’re not defeated. It would be up to the players to recognize, band together and defeat this champion to get an unlock that way. Don’t announce it, just have it happen.
So an open question: If you don’t announce it, how do players who want to progress their character down these new paths of exciting character progression know what to do it, or how to progress? We’ve seen if the path of progression isn’t relatively clear, most our every-day casual players won’t bother doing it, which isn’t a system that buys us much game play over-all.
And if the champion isn’t available, how do we message to players that the system of progression to advance their character isn’t available at this time? I think you can get away with no real messaging around something like a rare skin, but if it’s a system that expands your characters profession diversity it needs much clearer communication.
These are the kind of questions I ask the designers coming up with the systems we’ll use in the future, so it’s a fun opportunity for you guys as well
I honestly believe that the answer to this and another question that consisted of Dynamic Events with special rewards (Skritt King in Brisban) is a fairly simple one.
In Game Mail.
Brisban is a lvl 15 – 25? map. When you reach lvl 15 or if you are already past it, you get a in game mail from your respective race correspondent (Logan – Humans, Rytlock – Charr and so on).
Something to the effect that they hear your earning your way through Tyria but they’ve been made aware of some special events across the world that may reward you with surprising and powerful rewards.
This would honestly draw the masses to these areas fairly easily.
http://i.massively.joystiq.com/2013/07/03/guild-wars-2-might-never-have-an-expansion/
Read this. Basically says the LS is the expansion and as long as it is successful you won’t see a boxed and sold one.
I use mystic salvaging kits and end up wit 1-1 most of the time, sometimes slightly more. I can salvage 12 rare armors and know I’ll get 12 ectos, most of the time more though.
Scarlet made a new alliance with the christmas trees and mistle toe.
They most likely won’t be back. Players were upset that these were not in the game. They’ve now started incorporating them into the game as you can see with the new Scarlet conversations in Kessex Hills.
Wasn’t one of the end beta events branded attacking outside DR? (or was it a different capital?) Where players became branded themselves if they died, or something along those lines. I’ll have to look for it.
nvm, it was Plains of Ashford – “The Beta Weekend finale took place on June 10, 11:20pm PST, where the branded minions of Kralkatorrik invaded the Plains of Ashford. If a player was killed by one of the branded, they would turn into one themselves. Subsequently, characters would receive a set of five skills to use and had their affinity changed to hostile, allowing them to attack unaffected characters.”
that beta event sounds awesome. Why has this type of stuff not come into the game yet.
Here are 3 ideas that I’ve really liked. Two of which were brought up in the original CDI before verticle progression took over. My 3 things are the following.
Profession Specific Skill Challenges
Example: A Thief challenge to climb a trap riddled tower, without being able to actually walk. A puzzle built specifically for shadowsteps.
Reward: Unique attack/skill upgrade. Via particle effects or casting animation or something to that affect.
Synergy
Inter-profession Synergy is something that could be really exciting. It could also be really complex. It could work something like this:
This would be a Party mechanic that you would set up when you form your Party.
Each Profession has 1 Synergistic Effect with each of the other 7 Professions.
Each Party Member can only have 1 active Synergy Effect at a time.
To set up the Effect, you target the Party Member and “Offer Synergy”.
The Party Member accepts or declines the Synergy.
Synergies can be changed at any time outside of combat.
When the Synergy is active, both players benefit from the relationship. An example would be “Bond of Blood” between Warrior and Necromancer. While the Synergy is active, the Warrior’s attacks generate Life Force for the Necromancer. While in Death Shroud, a portion of the damage the Warrior takes comes off of the Necromancer’s Life Force Pool instead. This encourages players to work together in new ways.
Environmental Synergy is another Party Mechanic that could work in a number of ways, but basically it changes the ways professions operate under different circumstances. For example, a Guardian could have “Valiant Avenger” that grants the Guardian +Power or +Might for every Party Member that is either downed or dead. Necromancers could have “Parasitic Bond” that grants +Condition Damage for every Party Member that is below the Health Threshold. Rangers could have “Alpha Dog” that provides +Critical Damage for every active pet/minion in the party.
Guild Housing/Features
This ones gone over pretty extensively in the thread. More things for guilds in game can only be good
Sadly this beauty doesn’t have a name.
But my ears, she has made me laugh many times.
Lol. Your Old Man Asura looks like a creeper in these screengrabs haha.
For me it would be Rox, Braham and Job/Hobo/Ho-Ho-O-Tron.
I despise every Quaggan NPC.
If it’s in the History area of the Achievements tab, which I believe it is in, then you can’t finish it as that part of the LS is over.
There’s another thread with a Dev comment on this. They are reworking the leader boards since the first implementation of it had all the top players who made it to the same level ranked by who reached it first. They are trying to determine a way to rank them better then that. Once they do, they need to test and then they can bring it into the game. I wouldn’t expect to see it until February or so.
Lots of good recommendations and ideas in this thread.
OP, I see where you’re coming from in trying to figure out why some of your friends didn’t stick around. I too had about 6 or 7 friends who got this game on release day with me. None of them play any longer. To me, it’s not a lack of anything in the game, it’s just that GW2 just wasn’t for them or that they would rather go play their FPS.
I leveled up my alts by playing AC. I jumped into that dungeon as soon as I hit 30 and got to 40 or higher doing it. Below that level, really the open world is the best spot. With World Bosses in 4 of the 5 starting maps and more large scale events in the 15-20 zones as well there is plenty to be had and give a great experience with out going into a dungeon. Also the rewards for the World Bosses are not shabby to say the least.
There is another thread on the forums here about this. A dev chimed in to say that the selection process is secret and it’s not just random players of the game as they do not have all of our mailing addresses.
Whew, what a thread. I’m just reading through all of this now and let me say, it’s a journey.
I love this type of involvement by the community as well as the developers. I would also like to comment that I loved how Colin said he was a fan of FFT as in my personal opinion, think it may be the best RPG/Strategy game ever.
So there has been a few things that have caught my eye in this thread that I’d like to comment on and throw my support behind.
A ways back, E.V. mentioned an idea for Horizontal progression in the form of a profession based challenge that would reward with particle effects or just a small tweak to a profession based skill. I think this idea is pretty amazing. You would be able to show your fellow players that not only are you skilled with your profession, but you also have this nice reward for doing so. If this could happen, my support would be behind it.
Also pages back, there was mention of Player and Environmental synergy. Basically these are party features that let you play off your fellow party members. I love this idea. Not only was the skills mentioned in that post very neat ideas, but this would create some amazing opportunities for teamwork. This could potentially give the developers new avenues to challenge the players and their party make-ups.
This thread is great and it’s a very good read.
I would agree that it would not need to be an aspect that carries on infinitely. I believe the cap for the Gold donation is 3 gold, which is fine in my opinion.
If it kept going like the Recycle AP, then yes that would not be good. You would then have a problem with people just buying AP for the chests. That would be a huge problem.
I would expect it to go away when the next release comes, January 21st.
That Island thing is strange.
I thought the Mists was another world kinda.. Like a spot in between worlds. I mean.. it’s not like there is a large area of the map that is called the Mists where all these PvP islands are, right?
I can’t wait for the Consortium to come in and push Evon out. Dirty Charr needs to go.
The Consortium has done much more for Tyria. Did Evon create a nice vacation spot for Norn and Charr to gather after the Molten Alliance attacked? Nope.
Down with Evon and Up with the Consortium!
Sigh..
It’s an AP because of the holiday event. I mean seriously people.. There are hundreds and thousands of people in real life right now trying to gather donations to help needy people. So ANET throws in an aspect like that for this Holiday Event in the game and awards an AP for donating.
This isn’t breaking the game…this isn’t hurting anything… you don’t wind up with 500AP and your next AP Chest…
It’s not a bad idea. It fits into the spirit of the season.
To the OP, this isn’t the first time that donations have been used to help the citizens of Tyria. After the Karka attack last year they took donations to help rebuild the Lighthouse. You also received tokens back for this and could use them at a vendor that gave you weapon skins.
I love the fact that there are NPCs affected by all the turmoil in the world of Tyria and that they are asking the Heroes (Players) to help out.
Can I get a personalized one from Kasmeer please? Thanks!
I too like Scarlet and have continued to say so since her introduction.
I enjoy her back story and everything that has happened in the LS. It’s been fun and entertaining and that’s basically all I’m looking for in my video games.
I stopped being serious about gaming when I stopped playing COD and MLG Events.
Pete is correct!
I tend to just type in Superior Rune or Superior Sigil into the search field and scroll through them to look for the ones I need or to see what is popular at the moment.
Or you can use a Transmutation Stone and change it to another skin you like.
Is the Infinirarium the one where you choose what toy and then run around doing things for the toys?
Just curious..
I am wondering what you build is between stats and armor and trinkets and stuff
Same here.
If that didn’t matter, Maguuma would be wiping all servers due to our skill level.
You lost all credibility with that statement lol
Ah yes entitlement, the fallback position to demonise those who don’t want to grind.
But here’s the catch. You don’t have to grind.
Ah yes, another fallback position, used when there’s no real arguments addressing the problem. Yes, i don’t have to. It doesn’t change the fact that it is alt unfriendly. Extremely alt unfriendly, in fact.
The fact that you bring up non-existent problems pretty much highlight my side of the argument. This game allows you to gear and play all the alts you have.
People want BiS gear, but don’t like the requirements. That’s fine. You can have the tier right below it. Exotics aren’t much different stat wise, and are much cheaper. Very alt friendly.
Yes, yes, i understand your argument well. GW2 is very alt-friendly. Unless i actually want to have alts, and play the game. But hey, i don’t need to, so it’s okay.
Here’s your confusion. You’re mixing “NEED” and “WANT”. You can play GW2 with all Exotics just fine. You don’t “need” to have all Ascended gear, you “want” it. Thus your argument becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s not alt friendly, because you can’t have what you want.
This is the same argument for all the complainers. People have this feeling that because they paid for this game, they should be entitled to getting the game to cater to their particular style of play. It’s ok to want things your way. Heck, I wish I could have Eternity, but you don’t see me complaining that it’s too hard to get.
No no no no no. Everything in this game is a “want”. We don’t “need” to play at all. We “want” to play it. All you are doing is saying that my wants are inferior to yours. No hard feeling though, I feel the same way about you.
If you want to maximize your toons then you need ascended gear.
The problem is that ascended gear serves absolutely no purpose in this game. It’s actually quite ridiculous. It’s a carrot that ANet dangles in from of the players (oooh… shiney stats!) Because some people can’t live without vertical progression.
So after the VP crowd whined, cried, and complained like entitiled brats until ANet caved on their core principles, you come here and say that we shouldn’t make our voices heard? That those of us who want to play the game ANet described before launch are acting “entitled.”
You like the word entitled but here’s another one you should look up. Hubris.
You must’ve missed the comments/posts from Anet that Ascended gear was supposed to be in the game at launch but wasn’t ready. So they slowly brought it out as they finished the details…
If Ascended gear was here on launch, would the same complaints be made?
Again, it is the only complaint I see from people that are saying the game is alt unfriendly. Remember, that is the original discussion.
I don’t think this is true. I think I remember reading an article where they talked about needing to add this to satisfy people who wanted to progress.
Besides, ascended gear killed the GW2 manifesto. I really doubt they would have created a manifesto that would have been outdated before the game launched.
Yeah sorry. I was confused on this. It was from an interview Colin did back in March. Here is the quote.
Though Johanson accepts the huge outcry and accusations of betrayal from the playerbase were unavoidable, he admits the situation could have been handled better. In actual fact, Ascended Gear isn’t the most powerful gear in the game; it’s just as good as Legendary gear, but takes a fraction of the time to earn. “I think that ascended gear was something we should have had at launch,” Johanson says. “We didn’t have something above that exotic level that you put in a lot of time and earn it, but you don’t have to put in your whole life to earn it like a legendary weapon.
A question to all the people who are saying they don’t know what’s going on in the game.
Do you talk to NPC’s or listen to their idle chatter?
i do not i have to play with the sound off on my computer because i get that super loud pop/crash sound bug and it hurts my ears if i am plying with headphones
Ehh.. that sucks. You should still talk to some every now and then. Especially around the LS updates and where those LS updates are implemented. At the least, you can read the dialogue boxes. Unfortunately you won’t be able to hear the idle chatter that sometimes drops hints. I think that it does show up in the chat box though.
Ah yes entitlement, the fallback position to demonise those who don’t want to grind.

As a person who plays 5 characters and all are max level, I think this game is very alt friendly. Even though Ascended gear takes time to make, I find no issue in that. I plan on playing this game for years. I don’t have an issue if I take the next 12 months building my Ascended gear for these characters. What else am I going to do?
And therefore, no one else should? Right? Right??
That’s my opinion. Never did I say that no else should.
So basically.. the only complaint I’ve seen to say it’s alt unfriendly is because of the Ascended gear?
meh. As a person who plays 5 characters and all are max level, I think this game is very alt friendly. Even though Ascended gear takes time to make, I find no issue in that. Yes, I want to see a Second Season. I love the LS and the story so far. It’s kept me very interested in this game for nearly a year now. I still recall fixing sign posts nearly around this time last year.
First, Congratulations and Good luck with the baby
Second, I’d pick Necro. Idk why, perhaps it’s because it’s one of the classes I don’t have and it looks fun to play.
Thirdly and lastly, you don’t need to be lvl 80 to experience the “end game” You can enjoy all of Wintersday at any level. It’s what makes GW2 so wonderful
oOoo The Consortium getting into the mix now too huh?
This has been a great update thus far.
I agree. Well done.
I also liked how it incorporated all of the previous stuff Scarlet has been involved in. The next question is.. What is Scarlet up to with all these pieces she’s gathered up and what is she planning on building.
I’ll agree. I love this release. A lot of new stuff to do and enjoy. On top of all the Wintersday stutt, you also have the end of the Nightmare Tower events going on as well. Two areas with lots of stuff going on. Very nice indeed.
Where does this start? I already saw this event and I saw “donation drive” mentioned in patch notes but I don’t see some icon in LA on the map and I’m too lazy to look for myself without icon. But I might want to help to donate stuff to start the event.
The Donation event starts by the crafting area. Next to the Huntsman and Leatherworker area.
You should find a higher bridge.
I understand the LS fully and have gotten all my info aside from the short stories here on the site from the game.
It’s all been there and pretty straightforward as well.
They said no Expansion will come to GW2..
I’m confused by this. Are they getting rid of the Pristine Relics? Do you not need these any longer for the Ascended pieces?
Some people have a bunch of these pristine relics and they do not need anymore rings like myself. So ArenaNet is giving the option to these players to convert it to something else
Oh ok. That makes sense.
Thanks for clearing it up for me
I’m confused by this. Are they getting rid of the Pristine Relics? Do you not need these any longer for the Ascended pieces?
ruh roh.. I parked one of my characters at the top of the Tower…
Well technically.. this was consistent. When they did the LS update for Twilight Assault, that only lasted for 2 weeks instead of the normal 4 week.
Looks like when they touch the dungeons, those will only last 2 weeks.
Whew. Just when I thought I didn’t have enough back skins, here come more! Yippee!!!!!!!
I’m running out of characters to place these skins on
I don’t think the Fractured Achievements go away today…..
I believe they said they wanted Ascended Armor/Weapons to be long term accomplishments. Not crafted in 1 day. That’s why they have time-gated aspects to the crafting as well as raised the Craft Lvl from 400 to 500. This way people have to….. wait for it…. work a little bit to get these new top end pieces of equipment.
If not.. Everyone would be decked in Ascended gear by next week and would be clamoring for the next big thing for them to do.
I don’t know about you, but I planned on playing GW2 for years. I always hoped it would last just as long as other MMO’s like WOW and EQ. Making things take a little time to get isn’t a bad thing for me.
.. You don’t need to participate in the PvP aspect of WvW if you want the map completion there. Just check your WvW tab to see what spots your sever owns and go grab the POI’s you can. It may take a little time, but shouldn’t be too bad.
You don’t need the temple open to get the Obsidian shards. You can also get them via Laurel vendor and the jewelry boxes sold in Orr. The amount you get is quiet less though.
IDK.. I have an abundance of Karma myself. Whenever I hit 1 million i head to orr and drop like 250k on jewelry boxes.
Outside my window.. it’s sunny and 76 Degrees Fahrenheit. Living in paradise can suck sometimes
