While your criticisms are perfectly valid, I just can’t swallow the pill that the Spirit needs to have it’s regenerative properties toned down to the level of regen’s base 150hps. I think the cooldown for the Nature’s Renewal skill needs to be larger (possibly 1 minute) just to make the active more valuable, while still making Nature’s Vengeance see some play. But c’mon, Rangers lack group utility in general and they don’t have many options outside of Spirits.
Plus, not to mention: when you summon a spirit and hit it’s active skill upon summon, it sometimes doesn’t trigger at all and goes on full cooldown as if the skill actually processed…
You want Rangers to have fewer evades?
Then give them some active condi-cleansing.
I know I hear alot of Rangers on these boards claim that there isn’t profession prejudice, but it’s clearly not true at all. Most pugs simply wont tolerate Rangers, because decent ones are few and far in-between.
And when a decently experienced Ranger joins a group it’s almost as if just the Ranger must prove his or her worth to the fullest extend humanly possible, and no one else; like kitten man, as if that Guardian or Warrior couldn’t be more of a screw up than me… way to completely judge someone based on their kittening exterior. Sometimes I wonder if the human race really is intellectually progressing.
I feel your pain. My solution was to stay with a loving guild for my entire time in the game since 3-day headstart. Most pugs suck anyways. I’d rather communicate and lead runs with my guild through SE2, Arah 1 and 4, CoF2, etc. than deal with self-righteous kittens.
We have far too many utilities that only cater to the pet. It’s really hard finding group utility outside of Spirits.
Roll a Guardian. Best group utility plus excellent sustain, AND they are great at dealing damage to boot. All around great class, with viability in every gamemode.
I just want to save you your sanity though: don’t play ranger. I have 4600+hours on ranger, been playing since the early betas, and I’m just warning you – you’ll be disappointed in rolling a profession that only has use in 1v1 scenarios, or some PvE areas.
All the instances are drastically more difficult if you bring people along, some scale to catastrophic levels (i.e. Champion Spider Queen with 3 people versus Veteran Toxic Spider). Just bring a little more sustain, destroy toxic flowers when they pop, and you’ll be fine.
Eh. I laughed at some parts, but c’mon. Thieves aren’t metagame anywhere except for WvW roaming, and that’s just a joke.
This is likely the 10000th thread on this matter. Devs already stated it was intended that the auto-sequence super-ceded your dodge function.
Don’t compare it with the Guardian, Warrior, Thief or Mesmer swords. The ranger sword is unique in it’s own right: 400 range leaps built in the auto attack with a cripple allows for great anti-kiting.
I won’t lie… it’s killed me too many times to count. But oh well. Official response is official.
In SBI’s defense though, CD had a terrific start to the season. CD was dominating much in the same way SBI is raining on our parade. The way I see it is: you win some, you lose some.
I’m 10/15 only because I’m not too heavy on WvW, but I figure 3 weeks is plenty of time to make up for lost ground even after being farmed by the giants like FA and SBI.
I ASK, WHY I AM MATCHED WITH PPL WHO ARE RANK 1 OR 7 OR FULL TEAM OF UNDER R20 THAN DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT TOURNAMENT PLAY WHILE MYSELF BEING R50+ WITH 3.5K TOURNAMENTS AND 2.2K HOURS OF PVP PLAYED?
The dwindling population of sPvP players maybe? Not a whole lot of people do tourneys, since it only really caters to people who have done that, and only that, since day one.
All those bugs have been present since headstart a year ago.
Like the canine bug you posted in the other thread, Spirits have the same issue too; sometimes, when they are spawned, and a skill is activated, they raise their arm to cast and suddenly stop… putting the skill on full cooldown without actually triggering the skill. I reported it on bug forums, got a dev response saying “It’s in the list,” and lo and behold it’s not addressed in any of the 5 patches post.
TLDR: Expect more nerfs to Rangers and the devs being blissfully ignorant of the professions’ glaring issues of bugs that have existed since day 1.
Now if only we could kill Kormir. That would be fan service for sure.
I really like this change, it was really hard for me to read the numbers of the enemy team especially in solo queue where communication was lacking a bit. Make’s it alot easier for backpoint defenders.
As for the mesmer clones… isn’t that kind of the point though? I mean, they are meant to confuse you of the location of the real mesmer. I’m okay with mesmer peripherals being shown on the map, but like others in this thread it would, certainly, be rather alarming if Necromancer minions and Ranger spirits counted as red dots on the mini-map…
Remove the death penalty of pet swapping. There is no reason why any class should have it’s entire profession mechanic disabled for a whole minute, ESPECIALLY considering how kittening lackluster is it. 20 seconds is discipline enough.
It’s funny actually. One of my guildies needs his armor full Celestial, requested by his high-end WvW guild. He’s a Staff Ele.
I really don’t know why people seriously bother with celestial. If you wanted stat variance use a combination of different nomenclatures. No need to make this game any more of a job than it already is.
Just run a power spec and hit the door from start to finish. I did 30/30 on a 0/20/0/30/20 Ranger; if my crappy ranger could do it, anyone can.
Preperations were actually designed to be for the Ranger class initially, but was converted to Venoms and given to Thieves instead. To this day, I am still wondering why.
Even though we wouldn’t do it now another shot at Greatsword to discuss
A) 1 chain NDA by giving Vigor.
B) Add evade to swoop…Discuss?
My god. Vigor on GS? Way better than the RNG evade. It’s hard to time the auto sequence evade on a crucial skill at times, it would be simply amazing to choose when to dodge.
Everything is passive atm , so it’s pretty bad.
Renewal is okay I guess if you’re feeling manly, but the heavy cooldown and requirement for the pet to be nearby can be hard to manage. For example if a 30/30 necro just happens to ruin your day when your pet is too far, Renewal can’t really save you.
I kinda’ wish Anet gave us more options to cleanse that DIDN’T require 30 in WS. Like, oh I dunno, 2 condi-cleanse on pet swap. Wtb some active play pls.
Ranger
Utility Skill: “Search and Rescue!”
Recharge in PvP is 180s (normally 85s).
I think it’s Anet’s strange way of saying “Use Vigorous Training.”
But really, I just don’t get it. Rangers being capable of dodging frequently is kind of a profession mechanic for us. This is like the whole Zephyr’s Speed change all over again. While I feel uncomfortable with it, I guess it’ll incentivise players to invest some points in Beastmastery for AoE vigor.
While your concerns are noteworthy, I seriously doubt Anet takes any of this seriously. I think they take a far more slower approach to changes rather than radically altering entire traitlines in a single sitting.
I will admit though, Opening Strikes just seems so lackluster. Everything about it, really. It seems really awkward that Opening Strikes is almost designed, forwardly, to be so dependent on the passive 15 and 25 traits in Marksmanship to have potency… I don’t think any other profession has anything quite like it. Plus, we’re not a burst class.
The summoned Hyena via the F2 ability is treated as a summon, much like Thieves’ Guild or really any utility/elite that spawns an NPC. It is not treated as a pet, so Empathic Bond will only removed 3 condi.
Hi Mr. Cartwright,
I am a avid Ranger from GW1 and GW2. Played in GvG midline Cripshot and Magebane, and in tPvP with BM Condi. Been playing religiously since beta weekend event 2.
I would like to address the concerns:
1. We were designed as a class to use our pet in any situation, as regarded in your design documents. If you refer to other MMO models, some adopt a intricate system of having a dedicated pet heal, more pet commands, immunity to AoE. Increasing the vitality of anything doesn’t offer sustain in the slightest – In PvE especially where monsters frequently uphold the classic dodge-or-die, it’s almost imperative that our pet either dodge when we dodge or gain Aegis of some kind whenever we make an effort to take evasive action; why is increasing the health threshold for pets an apparent fix for the glaring issue regarding pet sustain?
2. Why are our utilities so weak? Nothing, truly, stands out as identifiable in PvE. One reason why rangers have a difficult time finding viability is the fact that our utilities almost demand a heavy 30 point investment in order to bring out the most viability. For example, if I were to take Signet of Stone, I would need to spec into Marksmanship in order to facilitate it’s damage immunity clause. If I wanted my Spirit of Nature to res reliably, I would precast it and then walk to my ally to hit “0” again to res, but that requires me to invest 30 into Nature Magic for Spirits Unbound. Why is it, exactly, that I must cut corners in order to find lackluster viability? So many professions take their utilities’ potency for granted, but the Ranger, surely, cannot.
3. Somewhat linking to #1, Power-based Rangers clearly do not enjoy the full fledged damage capacities that other professions enjoy. It is a gigantic difference in DPS from a Sword Ranger to that of a Axe Warrior. Why, exactly, are our damage coefficients so much lower than all the other professions in this game? I’ve been listening to the forum posts of this section for quite some time, and read up on people’s intuitions of how it’s our apparent opportunity cost of having a pet that dulls our damage front. It still perplexes me, however. A Warrior can have Burst ,a large health pool, and more recently incredible sustain, and yet they have hardly opportunity cost equivalent to that of a Ranger. A Guardian has access to virtues, stability/regen/protection sharing, and some of the most brilliant group utility in the game, and yet they have viable power options on the table. I would like to understand why Rangers do not enjoy the damage that many other professions assume as a priori.
It’s incredibly situational to see Storm Spirit’s burst hitting for that much.
This wasn’t a skill balance patch, they just dusted some bugs.
Yeah, I’m gonna’ reserve judgment until I see it in action. Sounds like that 7 minute threshold could be exploited in hotjoins, but hopefully it will incentive people to work as a team.
Uh oh, someone’s upset.
You’d have to be a bit more convincing to tell me that Warriors need to remain untouched for any future state of the game updates. I’m all for more viability in terms with giving Warriors more means with coping with conditions, but a 400HPS signet and hardly any penalty for missing bursts? Give me a break.
As if the profession ever deserved the compensation considering it’s meta status for the last 3 months.
Saying that condition builds only need condition damage is same as saying “direct damage builds only need power for max damage”
What.
Why are you saying this in structured forums.
Also, I’m really not at all sure why you guys are talking about PvE stat nomenclatures.
Healing Signet needs to be toned down at least. It’s absurd how well warriors can sustain without heavy healing power investment. No class should be capable of 50% crit chance on stunned with a Soldiers ammy with 400+hps with high damage skills, and condi-cleanse on burst to boot. It’s just simply broken, it’s truly beyond words to even consider contrary.
I’ll give ya’ an example.
Say a Guardian placed a Symbol of Swiftness on the ground.
The Symbol, a light field, can provide a standard 3 seconds of Area Retaliation if an individual used a blast finisher on the field. Now, the duration of that retaliation is based on the boon duration of the blast finisher user, not the field provider. So, if a thief happened to use a Cluster Bomb on the Symbol, and had 30% more boon duration via traits, the retaliation would last 4 seconds instead of 3 for all those near the field.
Sorry to hear you lost an item that expensive. I guess my only recommendation to you would be to earn an Invisible Bag for all your gear/utilities that you don’t want to accidentally sell to a merch.
^ Don’t use dual bow. Ever.
Sword/Torch pushes kills + excellent evades and disengage.
Use predatory birds (Eagle, Hawk, Raven, Owl) for dps.
Shared Anguish is a must since you’ll lack stun breaks. Offhand training to make your torch the best thing on cap point. Energy/Geomancy depending on whether or not you want the extra evade (which I think is completely necessary in this heavy stun meta) or push quicker kills. Oh, and don’t use Bark.
…aaand I was wrong.
Yeah I would strongly recommend that you do not pug, it’s really like flipping a coin: sometimes you’ll meet great, friendly and supportive people… but other times you’ll sometimes wonder why you have GW2 installed to endure even meeting some of the worst people you’ll have ever met.
If you’d like, you are more than welcome to join my guild. We do dungeons every day, have a bunch of people who’ve been playing since betas in our guild helping others get Dungeon Master. If you’re interested feel free to send me a PM, we’d love to have you.
They were available last year via chests rng, but this year unfortunately they are not available. Sorry to tell ya.
Yeah… don’t be silly in saying we have no place in sPvP. Because it’s simply not true: rangers are still strong on 1v1s.
The PvE and WvW front, on the other hand…
…that all of our Spirits are 20s cooldown instead of 25s?
jumps with joy
What’s even more amusing is that the tooltip of the trait identifies Vigor, when a pet never ever, ever needs Vigor. Shame the pet can’t get stability via Fortifying, but I’ll have to admit in saying that this is one of our better traits regardless of these things.
Jellyfish also have this issue.
Yeah, posted in the Bug section a while ago. Hopefully it’ll be fixed soon.
The Ranger Master trait, Vigorous Training, simply does not work.
I tried swapping my Ravens in combat, and it does not provide the AoE Vigor.
Underwater, same issue.
Don’t worry, there will be a new costume.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/bam/Bloody-Prince-s-armor/first#post3000972
When, I’m not sure.
Oh nice, I look forward to it! Yeah I was a little surprised to see no costumes too like most people on this thread, but there’s plenty to do while we wait. Happy Halloween!
I still think Sic’ Em needs it’s functionality changed entirely. Instead of requiring a target, why doesn’t it just give a base damage/movement buff to our pet for any action it does? Why does the buff go away when I use F2? Why can’t the destealth occur in a AoE form 600 radius around the pet? Shouts are so lackluster right now, no self-respecting Ranger could possibly use it without some backlash involved.
IDGaF how many hours you have. When say we got the best condition removal, it’s a lie
And if you think our Evades are good then you need to play a class with REAL invulnerability (or atleast distortion)
But Rangers do have Empathic Bond, which is a pretty powerful albeit low skill ceiling condi-clense. If you read what I said, I said we have the best “passive” condi-clense, and that surely is no lie at all. I agree we need more active condi-clensing that directly removes conditions on demand (Signet of Renewal counts I guess, but 48s traited is still bad), but you should have made that more clear instead of personally offending me. It’s hard to not be offended by your comments when you so arbitrarily post, making me assume what you’re thinking while questioning my experience as a backbone to your argument. Can we just talk about Rangers instead of hitting me with ad hominem?
Also, I’m still going to reiterate and defend my original stance: our weapon evades define our class when built properly. No serious player ignores this. Playing ranger is absolutely easy against a thief, end of. You’re immobilized? Chew your Stalker, Serpents, Quick Shot. The only time you’d ever have to use your weapon-based evades is when you are rooted, because you know you can safely anticipate an enemy burst while they think you’re vulnerable.
Rangers can build tanky with Forge runes and Settlers ammy, earning high regen + toughness, while birds burst for them. You’re right, the weapon-evades alone don’t do everything. But stacked with our other defensive mechanics it’s a downright joke to even consider a Thief being stronger than us.
If you’re having trouble against thieves then that’s your prerogative. No other decent Ranger would ever have a problem with a thief.
E/ Also, are you discreetly implying that because Mesmers have distortion they are somehow stronger than us in tpvp? Just because a profession has a class mechanic that gives them invulnerability doesn’t make them better than us. Try playing a Mesmer in this current meta, people laugh at that kitten.

You have a wildly inflated sense some self worth if you can assume that anyone here would know how many hours you’ve logged (as though that means anything) or that you have a champ hunter title.
Yeah I was on the fence about replying to him to be honest, but I guess I was offended that people would spout nonsense that others don’t know the profession from absolutely no idea of who that person may be.
And you’re right in saying those things don’t mean anything. But I will not be quiet while people talk trash about me when I know they are wrong. I guess I am a narcissist, oh well. Life ain’t perfect. I have no clue what I was thinking after seeing some other players in this game.
(edited by DiamondMeteor.8345)
this is a total lie and shows you don’t play this class … …even the part about evades (which have animations twice as long as their actual Evasion tick)
A wild PvE scrub appears!
Yeah I just got this game yesterday. I guess my 4381 hours on the ranger class and my Champion Hunter title means really nothing about my knowledge of the class.
It must be hard getting carried, thinking thieves are the bane of our existence. Thieves need buffs if anything.
(edited by DiamondMeteor.8345)
We have weapon-based evades and some of the best passive condi-clenses in the game.
Plus, not the mention, a pistol thief is the least of a ranger’s worries.
No reason to fret about this.
