Unlike human ears, they’re fully mobile like cat or dog ears :p (One of their idle animations they sniff the air too between that and their big eyes lead to me to suspect their senses are wayyyy more acute than bookah’s)

Yep. Remember the asura in EotN who was developing some sort of air freshening device? He said asuras have really sensitive noses.

He was also the first character to have a figurine made of him, and the first (I believe) Destiny’s Edge cast member to be available as a mini.

It seems as though they wanted him to be the mascot for the game.

How can you have a Snaff plush without the associated Zhitan chomping down on his body? ;P

Hey All,

Just rolled an Asura and his ears stick up when he fires his pistol. See pic. Once he puts the pistol down/goes out of combat they go down.

Is this normal?

Uhuh, yeah. Standing completely up like that is indicative of alertness/attention.

Their ears are pretty expressive, particularly during emotes. The longer/bigger they are, the more noticeable it is, which may be why you haven’t noticed it before. During /cry, for instance, they droop completely and curl inward.

Why do female Charrs have to wear a dress?

in Wintersday

Posted by: Dinny.5310

Dinny.5310

@Dinny: You know why there aren’t feminine armour sets? Because, like I said, Charrs wear the same outfits, whether male or female. This was a BIG draw for me for the race, and no doubt other people too. Charrs don’t give a damn about their appearance, they’re awesome warriors who respect only those people who deserve respect. Men and women are on equal footing in EVERY SINGLE ASPECT. This is a really big deal for me.

But ultimately it doesn’t make any sense to me that, despite them using the same armour as male charrs for EVERY SINGLE OTHER piece of armour or town outfit, they suddenly have this weird dress that goes totally against their lore AND doesn’t look right on them at all.

p.s., I have all the right to complain, so don’t tell me not to complain, thanks!

Thanks for defeating your own argument whilst enforcing my own. I’m not sure how many times I have to repeat this, but I’m in favor of diversity. The fact that all charr sets are masculine/unisex is relatively in line with the lore and I don’t have a problem with it, but I can’t see the introduction of some choice for players as an undesirable thing.

Also, I have no idea where you get the idea that wearing a dress casually is lore-breaking. Certainly, it errs on the unusual, but seriously. They’re town clothes, worn in a casual context, they’re not going out to battle in it. Stop assuming that every single member of a particular race is exactly the same. Are you going to try to tell me, for example, that all members of a certain race or ethnic group are homogeneously X or Y? Yeah, no. Not all charr are butchy warriors (and I bet there are some charr ladies who like wearing a dress every now and then). Would most be? Probably. But not every single one.

P.S. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Also, adding a smiley face to a passive aggressive post doesn’t make you charming, FYI.

in Wintersday

Dinny.5310

“They would NEVER wear something like that.”

Ugh, homogenizing/assuming that every single member of a particular race thinks and feels exactly the same.

Anyway, don’t you think that options are a good and desirable thing? This is virtually the first feminine piece of clothing available for charr women. I cannot begin to say how long I’ve been waiting for something like this, and I know I’m not alone.

TL;DR: Personal preference at the end of the day, but seriously… the more variety, the better, and I’m glad that it’s moving in that direction. Literally every armor set available (every single one!) is masculine or unisex in appearance, please don’t complain when something feminine crops up.

Fingers on 1 – 4 and 6 – 9. You have to play with the camera a bit. It shouldn’t be 100% overhead, even though the game suggests that orientation. You play the note as it touches/crosses the white circle. Doing it before that point is considered missing the note and you’ll lose health.

It’s not supposed to be that easy. I’ve been playing piano for years and it took me maybe about 4 – 5 rounds to get an acceptable score. Anyway, if you really, really suck at it, like Dra Keln said, you need 12… you can skip it.

I have only two responses.

One, you can feasibly and easily craft ALL of the five toys. Not “just 2”. You will be able to craft 2 by the time Tixx makes it to LA. After that, as far as I know, you get rewarded every single day with the materials needed to make a toy. And you have all the way until Jan 3rd to do it.

Two, if you think bell choir sounds tuneless and you can’t recognize the songs, you are either completely tone deaf or you’re not good at bell choir. My favorite part is playing Tixx’s theme (the music that played in the Wintersday trailer) on the melody: you can definitely recognize that tune and being able to nail it is pretty rewarding.

Liking Gw2 less with every update. Content is starting to feel less and less like an MMORPG, and more of a “console” type game. Just not the type of game I enjoy.

It’s odd, but I am actually starting to miss old-school trinity / gear based content. Who would have thought…

Then it’s not for you. This is the way most players want it to be, that’s why there was mass hysterics when the ascended gear was released and people heralded it the endtimes because releasing something late that was planned from the inception of the game apparently means Anet is breaking their anti-vertical-progression manifesto.

Yeah. Long story short is, this is how it’s supposed to be, and that’s great because there’s finally an MMO that suits my taste since Ultima Online. There are already a whole plethora of MMOs that cater to your thing, go to them along with everyone else who is unsatisfied and everyone will be happy.

Good taste is subjective, and if you don’t like kittenty outfits, then don’t wear them.

How do you people even manage to go out at night, do you confront every girl in a short skirt or visible bra straps in the club?

Cause they aren’t out in a kittening battlefield, in stabbing distance of someone else who is looking to stab.

It has nothing to do with prudence, and everything to do with being reasonable and practical. As I said before, while it’s a fantasy game, you can only suspend your disbelief so far. No matter how you slice it, a girl character charging into close-range combat with a metal bikini is just ridiculous.

See, this is the weird argument.

Those swords? They’re made out of fire and annihilate everything they touch. METAL ARMOR DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM THAT.

The elementalist over there? Summons liquid hot magma and sprays you in the face with it.

Someone wearing “skimpy” armor is FAR MORE LIKELY TO LIVE than someone wearing 400 pounds of tank plate, flinging around a thirty pound sword and lugging a fifty pound shield to go along with it.

You get one of two choices:

Either the mass of the armor and weapons matter, in which case you will die of exhaustion from wearing your heavy armor longer than an hour at a time…

Or it doesn’t matter, in which case skimpy armor makes MORE sense because it takes less material to make the armor.

There’s no scenario where bulky full plate armor wins out.

Holy carp, and you say my argument is weird. That is some seriously tenuous logic right there. Guy, as much as I support your right to enjoy women running into battle with their kitten flopping about, you’ve completely boggled me.

Someone wearing “skimpy” armor is FAR MORE LIKELY TO LIVE than someone wearing 400 pounds of tank plate, flinging around a thirty pound sword and lugging a fifty pound shield to go along with it.

Except you’re ignoring the fact that, realistically speaking, anyone dealing with fire magic (or anything similar), regardless of armor, are pretty much equally screwed. And that fireproofing materials is actually possible to some degree, and that in that scenario, being more covered would be beneficial.

Either the mass of the armor and weapons matter, in which case you will die of exhaustion from wearing your heavy armor longer than an hour at a time…

Maybe so, but I do think norn and charr in particular can get away with it. Mind, heavy armor doesn’t have to be bulky. The GW2 universe is fairly technologically advanced (i.e. asuran magitech, charr engineering). Don’t see any reason why producing lightweight armor sets isn’t feasible.

Or it doesn’t matter, in which case skimpy armor makes MORE sense because it takes less material to make the armor.

So should I walk around in the nude all day and not buy clothes because it’s more economical to be skimpy? Please, now you’re just grasping at straws.

At the end of the day, I don’t mind a few skimpier options as long as they’re not basically metal bikinis. Pit fighter set is a pretty good example of how to do it. I would prefer to see as little of it as possible. Honestly, the most sensible argument for this is the fact that as things currently stand, it’s hard to show off charr markings/sylvari glows/norn tattoos.

Actually, this is where town outfits would be most applicable…. I you have a female toon that wants to run around in a porn-girl scout outfit or whatever, get gems to buy it from the store. Similarly, guy toons that want that leopard printed banana hammocks with some sandals and sunglasses to soak up the rays on the LA beachs… whatever, grab em at the store. I can understand as the female toons start out poor and not well armored, that the attire may not be “fully covered” and if people wanna transmute those styles, fine…. but there should be cool looking feminine armors that “fit the features” without necessarily making her look like a bimbo at higher levels. Maybe there are some? Frankly, I find the non-scholar female professions have some of the best looking armors while also having their fair share of the more revealing armors.

Agreed with pretty much everything.

Yeah. I know a few bad apples can spoil the barrel, but try not to let it get to you. Wherever you go — forums, other mmos, real life — you’ll meet people who are entitled, impatient and rude.

Since we’re swapping stories, a few days ago I was doing a CoE run. We did the second path, we had a guardian with us who reluctantly went along, he had wanted to do first path. He frequently died and obstinately refused to respawn. When he died at the very, very last boss (literally one battle away from completion of the dungeon) he was all “We can’t do this, we need more warriors/guardians and you all need to get better gear” (to a team kitted out with full exotics, including a ranger with a legendary) and left.

Why you would leave at the very last part after that kind of time investment is stupidity of the highest caliber. We replaced him with a much more competent guardian and completed it with relative ease.

Dinny.5310

Disagree. Honestly, the way GW2 has it set up so far is totally on the ball.

I’ll call it the grill-to-skin ratio.

Light armor classes have the most revealing armor. They’re supposed to be at the back, not up in anyone’s grill, and they can definitely get away with showing skin.

Medium armor classes, I’ll allow it too. Arguably, thieves operate in grill territory, but… Whatever. I don’t like it that much, but I can live with it.

But, heavy armor? Definitely not. I’ve been really pleased with the fact that GW2 has no metal bikinis, and judging by the armors of GW1, we aren’t going to get any. But seriously, anyone suggesting that warrior or guardian women should be getting up in enemy grills with an exposed midriff/cleavage window/etc is insane. I don’t care if it’s a “fantasy universe”, you can only suspend your disbelief so far, and armor is meant to be protective. Those skin zones just scream “stab me!”. May as well be going into combat naked.

Asura Rituals

Dinny.5310

Arkengel RaF knows what’s up.

For example: marriage. Do they marry? Progeny recognize their parents and forebears, obviously, but I don’t recall if there’s references to husbands or wives. Do they form official unions, or are they just casual associates for as long as they deem it profitable and logical to remain so?

Tonn/Ceera are a married asuran couple you meet if you picked the “let an innocent die” option at the conclusion of the pale tree/vision quest. And there are lots of assorted NPCs who refer to their spouses.

They definitely have marriage. If you’ve played GW1, in Eye of the North, Vekk comments (during a Norn wedding) that asuras have much better weddings. He reveals that the major part of the ceremony is, apparently, calculating just how much love is in the air.

And yes, asura genuinely fall in love. If you choose the college of dynamics as your background, the first leg of the personal story revolves around a couple, the male of whom is extremely loving/adoring/doting. If you pick the order of whispers route in Orr (capture the navy), you actually do get to watch two asura as they fall in love.

I think Asura treat their children like Charr do. They’re raised in an organization while the parents are free to research and watch from afar with pride or disappointment in their achievements.

The game itself + That Old College Try (pretty much the canon cornerstone of asura lore) establish that this isn’t the case. As soon as they’re able to, progeny assist their parents with their projects/lab work. After a certain point (or during the stage of working alongside their parents: this part I’m unclear on), they’re sent to their equivalent of elementary school. If you talk to the NPCs in Splorge Metamystics in Metrica Province, you’ll learn that your asura character went to school there.

After that, when an asura is approximately in their early/mid teens (TOCT uses the term “adolescent”), they apply for a college. They study under a master (as an intern) until they graduate.

Other Asuras' Popular Opinion on the Inquest

in Asura

Dinny.5310

In short: the Inquest is merely tolerated. They have their own wing in Rata Sum and there is also a member/representative of the Inquest sitting on the council. Talking to him reveals that the Inquest, on the whole, does what it can to stay on friendly (or at least neutral) terms with other asura. Basically, it seems they bargained with the council to be left alone.

I’m wading from fact into theory territory here, but… Considering Councillor Flax’s position in the asura personal story arc, I’m willing to wager he’s very much an Inquest supporter. Like the Inquest, he is convinced of the superiority of asura over other races and has done some morally questionable things in the name of giving the asura an advantage (i.e. suppressing Gorr’s theory, citing that the council wanted it a secret until they found a way to exploit it for Rata Sum’s benefit). With him as the most powerful figure in asuran society… It’s pretty easy to see why the Inquest is tolerated.

Traits destroy creative play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dinny.5310

Dinny.5310

For example: Illusionary Membrane = Gain protection for 2 seconds when you gain regeneration.

There is your creative playstyle. You just chose to play that style. Traits and utilities allow you to choose this, which is what you did with your example. If you were to say, go for full damage instead of protection/regen, then trait for full power/shatter, etc.

The only thing I agree with you in your post is that traits cost money to change, they should remove this so it’s easier to experiment with new builds. And no sPvP is not an option, I want to test this new build out on various enemies and dungeon bosses to see if it’s viable, then go to town and alter it for free.

I’m sure you’re aware already, but if you wanted to test the viability of trait builds, you can freely re-trait yourself however you like in Heart of the Mists, pick a free weapon from the vendor, and go down to the testing dummies. The testing dummies are really thorough since they have variants for heavy, medium and light armor. And if you want more of a challenge, go to the sparring area and see how you fare against the class dummies (which have surprisingly good AI, actually).

Traits destroy creative play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dinny.5310

Dinny.5310

Well… You can combine traits in many different ways. You can optimize for certain weapons, utility skill categories, your class mechanic and/or play strategies (i.e. skills tied to things like endurance/dodging).

While many people do sort of “pigeonhole” themselves for whatever reason, you really don’t have to. In fact, most people think a well-rounded and balanced build is desirable. And every class has multiple viable builds, too.

At the very least, you have to agree that it’s certainly a lot more flexible and fun to play with than the old strength/dexterity/agility/intelligence stat point thing most MMOs are based around.

Why would there be another way to reach the goal without the trait? Doesn’t that make the entire trait completely pointless?

Where’s the logic!?

Er… Maybe not the trait effects itself, but the stats, surely. For example, let’s say you wanted a more rounded build. You put into your traitlines related to vitality and toughness and your mechanic (just for example). You have nothing in your attack power. You feel a bit underpowered as a result. You can make up for it by upgrading your armor with ruby orbs/berserker stuff and get a full set of exotic ruby jewellery, also slotted with more rubies.

I’d think it is indeed a common underlieing principle that unites the three main colleges. Asura specialize in magi-tech. Meta often signifies an “aboutness”. So metamystics could be the principles of how magic works.

Haha, pretty much /thread right there. That makes a lot of sense, especially if you consider what asuran children would be taught first, and what Gorr’s area of specialization seems to be.

It doesn’t have any effect on the story and probably never will. It’s just there for flavor, and I think it changes your home instance by putting an NPC there depending on what you choose. That’s it.

Every race has an equivalent of this.

I really, really, really like the design of pretty much every character posted here. It also really pleases me to see people attempting to make interesting male asura, and female asura that don’t just use the first face type.

Posting Annac (Annachponae). He is the prettiest asura boy ever. He still needs his inquest cowl thing before he’s finished, though.

Mmmm… No to the precursors/exotics. Way too many people complained about that sort of thing with the karka chests.

The safest option would probably be something like a bag, some purely cosmetic things (town clothes/armor skins), a small sum of gold and 1-3 black lion keys. It would be rad if the clothes/skins were race specific, for variety’s sake, but now I’m going into pipedream territory.

…beacuse it continues GW1’s tried and tested tradition of offering only non tradeable, cosmetic rewards from world events. Oh, wait…

Don’t agree on the non-tradeable part necessarily, but 100% yes on the topic of cosmetic rewards.

That’s what I want way more of and I’m surprised we’re not seeing it. Armor/weapon skins, town clothes, those sort of things.

I feel your pain about warriors and guardians. My fiance did a dungeon run with a max level warrior about a week ago and said that the guy didn’t use ANY of his attacks or utility skills. He used 100 blades every now and then between this auto, and that’s it. He also had the warrior mentality of running into everything and aggroing a whole bunch of things.

But as a guardian that painstakingly built herself to be as useful/supportive to a party situation as possible, it pains me more when people play guardians in that way. A friend of mine from university insists on attempting to make a DPS guardian, ignoring everything defense/support related. Sigh.

Pretty much everything except the people who camp the “Guild Wars 2 Discussion” subsection of the forums to do nothing but moan and whine endlessly despite claiming to be finished with the game.

And possibly the writing at some points in the game…

I honestly can’t believe people have their panties in such a twist over the mistakes coming out of a new game that frankly took a massive risk by departing from any MMO formula we’ve known and completely ignore everything that makes this game a breath of fresh air in the world of MMOs.

- The scenery, architecture and overall atmosphere of the game. It’s frigging /gorgeous/. While the actual graphics themselves are no Aion, they’re still very pretty to look at, and every region has it’s own flavor. Take a moment to actually look around and briefly think about how much time went in to just designing each individual structure. Perhaps this will illustrate it for you.

- A really elegant combat system that’s easy enough for a complete newbie to pick up whilst being just complicated enough to play around with for variety. The traits/weapon/utilities system is actually really interesting and smooth. I know some classes have skills that don’t work as they should yet, but I don’t see any reason why those snags won’t be ironed out in time.

- How the game actively encourages teamwork at every juncture. No kill-stealing to worry about. Harvesting nodes work per player, not like in Perfect World, where I had to race people to harvesting nodes.

- WvWvW in general. Again, some snags, but I don’t see why they won’t be ironed out over time. It reminds me of how TF2 players play in 2Fort over and over again without ever really tiring of the game. When everything is polished up and more skills/etc are added, it will become even more dynamic.

- The fact that there actually isn’t vertical progression. Everyone whining that there is hasn’t played nearly enough Guild Wars 1. When my fiance was looking at the armor options MONTHS ago, he, in all seriousness, said, “Wow, they don’t have prestige/ascended armor yet. I guess they’ll add that in later.” And then he was taken aback when his prediction came to pass and everyone acted like it was a bolt out of the blue. Hell, even ANet themselves said that they should have added it in before launch.

TL;DR: Ascended items aren’t a new tier that was haphazardly added later in. The game launched with them planned, but not implemented. That isn’t vertical progression. Yet, anyway.

- One of the more interesting guild structures I’ve seen. The “influence” system is quite unique.

- Excellent and rich lore… But needs better writers to properly do it justice, both in-game and in the novel series.

- There are actually a few moments where the voice acting is brilliant, but it’s sort of overshadowed by the fact that there’s an equal amount of mediocre or outright bad VA work (i.e. Trahearne, Ceera).

EDIT: Oh, and those breathtakingly beautiful frescos on every loading screen.

You didn’t provide much detail… Did you actually go to the hold, get the charges from Maeva (I think?) and plant all of them throughout the hold?

If you did all that and nothing’s happening, you might need to start over. This particular quest is a bit temperamental. The first time I attempted it, Maeva absolutely refused to move after I placed the charges, and going all the way to the top of the ship to end the quest didn’t work.

"Metamystics" - What is it?

in Asura

Dinny.5310

A speculation/lore-related question, but since it relates to asura, I’ll post it in this subforum.

I notice that the school that your player character went to as a progeny (equivalent of asuran elementary school, it seems) is Splorge Metamystics. Similarly, Gorr’s lab is called Advanced Metamystics.

So, what exactly do you think metamystics is? Is it its own branch of study? Is it some sort of ‘over-arching’ discipline that runs as a common/uniting thread between the three main colleges? I’m interested to hear what people speculate.

you’re telling me to select a better model in the character menu. But My point is that even the fattest neck currently is not fat enough for my taste.

It would not hurt you if they added more options for character customization., But instead it would only help me and players like me who seek fatter necks on asura.

I know the post may seem humorous I am 100% serious

Ah, I see. Well, perhaps something can be done about that in time.

Um, the heavier body types have thicker necks. If you wanted a thicker neck, choose those body types in the character create. When I first created my female asura, I thought her neck was way too tiny (I’d given her the skinniest frame available). I felt better after I fattened her up a bit.

That said, the neck size on the larger body types should probably be the standard thickness, I agree with that, but it doesn’t really bother me. If you don’t want to fatten up your asura, look into armor pieces that cover the neck. Even though my asura thief has a slight build, this never bothered me on him because his armors conceal his neck.

Excellent overview, DreamOfACure. People overlook how expressive most asura are, too, so I was pleased to see you note that.

I personally chose asura because I always dig the “sci fi” type races/classes the most.
