Living World is supposed to act as a buffer between expansions. At least, that was the original intent.

No, the original intent was that the living world would completely replace expansions. Only later after player feedback did Anet decide to also create expansions.

Regardless, Anet has said that we’ll hear about the plans for the future in a blog post in early 2016.

Nope. The Chantry of Secrets globe shows major threats, while the other map shows ley line hubs.

What would you change in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Diovid.9506

The most important thing to change for me is a change towards more lore. Ways to do that are adding lore tidbits on loading screens (similar to the Elder Scrolls games for example, something like this was part of GW2 but scrapped before release) and a collection of information on cultures/history/enemies (similar to Mass Effect’s Codex, GW2 had lore books before its release, that was at least something).

Feature-wise I do not really desire that much. Things like build saving, solo queue, a seperate tab for raid party making and things like that would be nice but no where near as nice as more lore exposition in my opinion. Well, to some extent something like ME’s codex could be seen as content if the codex has to be filled by actually finding books/locations/monuments and by killing enemies.

Oh something else I wouldn’t mind but isn’t high up on my list of wishes: make activities (things like Sanctum Sprint) always available instead of having only one available each day. Also make it so that you can enter activities with a party so you can compete against friends.

Something that is somewhat high on my list: Make sure all professions have 1 healing skill and 1 elite skill of every utility skill type they have access to.

Oh and most importantly: Ignore most posts on the forum/reddit (including mine). Not only do they represent a vocal minority, they also contradict each other. Even if they were not contradicting, if those ideas were implemented the same people who said they wanted them will probably say they don’t them i.e. people are bad at knowing what they want.

Many enemies were removed in gw2 and its fun speculate what happened to them
gargoyles, behemoths, giants, hydras and others.

It might be fun but it is a bit useless, since most (if not all) will not have been removed for lore-reasons but for other reasons (gameplay, resources, aesthetics).

Gargoyles seem to be the exception. We have lore confirmation that gargoyles actually disappeared.

I’m not sure what you mean when you say ‘giant’ though. We have giants in GW2. They are nothing like GW1 giants, that’s true. But then, GW1’s giants are suspiciously similar to GW2’s ogres.

Actually, in one of the story instances (What the Eye Behonds) Trahearne says the following:

These airships are the Pact’s crowning achievement: a combination of asura, charr, and human technology.

The Pact developed these airships so that we might fight Zhaitan from every possible angle: land, sea, and now air.

Thanks for clearing that up. Still not clear on what the humans could have contributed with the technology they usually display, seeing as that is far inferior to either Charr or Asura. The Idea with the ballons maybe, seeing as they are the onlyones to use those (Queen’s Jubilee / Attack on Lion’s Arch)?

Ballons might be one thing, clockwork/springwork might be another (as seen in the watchwork creations).

Well, from what I gathered, the first batch of airships was actually built by the pact over at Fort Trinity (which I always thought of as the HQ). I vaguely remember touring the Fort for the first time, being led to the Airship docked there and told it was the latest stuff in charr-technology. And later, in the Arah story instance, when you get rescued by Logan on the new flagship which seemed to be created by combining the technoloies of all the races (except maybe Norns/Humans. These don’t seem to contribute much on that front).

Thanksgiving in Tyria

Diovid.9506

Thanksgiving isn’t about taking people’s land :/ I mean, you’re right to say that it DID in fact happen, and it was awful, but if you think Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrating our brutal treatment of Native Americans, you’re kind of missing the point entirely.

I’m pretty sure that was sarcasm, making some light fun of America’s history.

(Also I wouldn’t say that humans were “swiftly” removed from the Charr lands they took. They were kicking it Ascalon for quite a long time)

The difference being that the humans were not the people originally living there, nor were they nearly as defenseless as the indians were.

But I think the key reason Thanksgiving time isn’t celebrated in GW2 (and was such a minor thing in GW1) is that Thanksgiving in the late November time frame is a fairly North America specific holiday.

That, and the fact that there is not a lot time between Halloween and Wintersday already.

Possibility of seeing Cantha in the future?

in Lore

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

I think the chances are extremely low for both Cantha and Elona (excluding the Crystal Desert), though the chances of Elona are probably somewhat higher than those of Cantha.

You say the Tengu and their closed city may be connected to Cantha but I’d argue that that is in fact not the case. See, not only did Cantha become xenophobic towards all non-humans (thus they now hate Tengu more than they already did back then) so Cantha was cleansed of non-humans, but the Tengu actually wanted to leave Cantha because they saw Zhaitan’s tidal wave as a sign to go to Tyria and unite the different Tengu groups there.

This xenophobic/dictatorial nature of Cantha also makes it so that they would probably not want us there (including Krytan humans who have pretty strong ties to many non-human races). Besides, there are still Risen and (probably) the Deep Sea Dragon standing between us and Cantha. And we have better things to do than to sail all the way south to Cantha.

I’m sorry, I wouldn’t mind seeing Cantha either.

Edit: Also seeing the rate at which content is added, how long do you think it would take Anet to add an entire continent?

Yea, the clip is all that can be added. They were pretty much all temporary open world events. It would take a lot of work to instance all of that. Very little of it was actually instanced. The parts that were have been added as fractals and/or Aetherblade path in TA.

There were at least two instances that haven’t been added as fractals or as a dungeon path; the one where you help Rox (and meet Frostbite) and the one where you help Braham. Oh and there was that fight with Canach at Southsun. I’m probably forgetting some things.

Edit: The fight against the krait boss at the top of the Tower of Nightmares was instanced as well.

I’m unconvinced we will ever visit another continent – I’m not sure the game is well set up for such a split of population.

How would that split up the population more than HoT did? I mean, I too think the chances of us ever visiting areas outside of the current world map are very slim but not for that reason.

I wonder if we do go to Kralk, would we enlist Charr from the North to aid the southern Legions as well, thus opening up another possible area?

Those Charr are already enlisted. They are called blood legion charr and they are all over the iron legion’s lands. That said, it does make some amount of sense if the story about Kralkatorrik is tied, to some extent, to that of the Charr (and possibly to Ebonhawke).

LW S1 consisted mostly of temporary open-world events, it functioned entirely different than S2. It can’t just be added to the gem store. If Anet could do that, they would’ve by now. The official word is that they are looking at ways of re-adding LS1’s content but no active development on that front is going on. If Anet finds a way of adding LS1 again, it will probably take months of development time so it won’t be back any time soon (if it will be back at all).

My guess is that the best they will be able to do is put in an NPC that you can interact with and he tells you the history and shows video clips for you to see.

Given ANet’s recent track records, I’m afraid not… I have spent my hard earned $50 and I don’t want to spend any more for this game.

There were/are 3 free ways of playing season 2:

1) Log in within 2 weeks after a chapter came out (1 second is enough).
2) Get gold, convert it into gems, buy the chapter.
3) Find someone else who has a it unlocked, play it with them (in this case you won’t get achievements and rewards, but you still get to experience the story and gameplay).

At the moment we know nothing about season 3, but given Anet’s track records.. it will be free.

Do charr have the highest population?

in Lore

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

Its entirely possible (though not necessarily probable) that Joko turned almost all the Elonians into undead or something

I’d agree that it is possible but not probable, as the Movement of the World states:

Vabbi bowed to his strength simply to survive, and Kourna and Istan both became vassal states.

So Kourna and Istan would probably still consist mostly of (living) humans. This is further shown when it says:

Palawa created a living army to match his undead one

If you’re counting the lands of the other legions, why are you not counting the lands of other humans? Because there are two whole nations of humans still out there: Cantha and Elona. Although, unlike the three legions, the three human nations do not have an alliance with eachother (and are unlikely to form one).

If anyone even remotely matters it’s Mhenlo, since he had the role of mentor for the Cantha adventure, for non-canthan PCs.

Truth be told, I’m surprised that it was Ventari, not Mhenlo, who became the Revenant’s “healer legendary”.

My guess is they didn’t want all Revenant heroes to be human and/or related mostly to human history. Ventari is both non-human and very imporant to Sylvari (even if he still has some connection to human history). I can see future legends being related to the other playable races. Although, to be fair, the other races have far fewer relevant characters to choose from than the humans (thanks to how most history we know of is so human-centric). Asgeir or Jora for the norn could work. As would Pyre or Burnfaaz for the Charr. Oola and Snaff could work for Asura I guess. The problem is of course that gameplay considerations limit this already small list even further. Anyways, sorry for the off-topic ramble.

Soul Dragon?

in Lore

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

So the question is, do dragons even have souls? If they have souls, do they go to the mists after the dragon died?

I thought Elder Dragons couldn’t die? Considering they’re a part of Tyria’s magic renewal cycle. Sure it seems we killed Zhaitan but all the devs have said so far is that he is not coming back. I think that’s their way of saying we won’t be actively fighting through Zhaitan’s domain again, but not going against how Elder Dragons cannot die. Correct me if I’m wrong but this has been the idea I always had and research I did about the Elder Dragons.

Nothing has indicated that the Elder Dragons can not die. Well, except for the fact that it was at one point mentioned by Anet that the Order of Whispers (if I remember correctly) believed that the Elder Dragons could not be killed, only put back to sleep. However, this plays no role in the game itself (is it even mentioned anywhere in-game?) and no lore that we know of backs up that belief. In fact, as Konig points out, devs have stated that Zhaitan is gone for realsies.

Edit: What is mentioned in-game however is how the dragons play an important role as regulators of magic. That might be what you are remembering. However, it is also mentioned that without such regulation magic would run wild and cause serious problems (implying that the absence of such regulation is a possibility).

Do dragons have souls? Apparently yes, because of Glint. Somehow Rytlock was able to commune with Glint in the Mists. Or maybe Glint is a special case, or maybe that’s not how Rytlock got Glint’s power?

Revenants do not channel souls, they channel echos of people/creatures who have made a big impact on the world and thus on the mists.

Then where is the hero of GW1?

Or Abaddon or Togo or Doric or Odran or Turai or Varesh or Khilbron or Saul or Vizu or Bonfaaz or Asgeir or Pyre or many other important historical figures.

Anet limited Revenents mechanically in which legends they can channel but that doesn’t change the lore.

Yes. That’s why we are trying to create an Elder Dragon of our own which might prevent such problems.

Krytan, Elona, Canthan, Ascalonian question

in Lore

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

First of, I suggest you read the Movement of the World and maybe have a look at this: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Timeline

Another general tip I would give is listening to music and watching screenshots/videos from GW1 to get a sense of the different cultures and regions.

Will my choice have any influence on the story btw?

I think the only impact it has is on how your sister looks.

I am probably not gonna pick Elona, because I am not gonna choose the Order of Whispers on this one (already have that order on another character) and they have an unknown way of travelling and communication with Elona. Or I might do.

Elona and the Order of Whispers are not as tightly linked as you suggest. There are a lot of Elonians in Kryta that have nothing to do with the order, see the Ossan Quarter in Divinity’s Reach. Elonians are a mix of Arabian and Egyptian cultures. Three different groups of Elonians exist: Istani, Kournans and Vabbians. A fourth group, one without it’s own region, is the Sunspears.

Canthan are a bit of an Asian looking human nation right?
My human does not look as such (could of course still be Canthan and have lost its Asian looks through generations though).

Yes, Cantha is inspired by a mix of different Asian cultures (specifically China and Japan). Like Elona, it has different groups of people living in different regions. The three main groups are the Canthans living in Kaineng City, the Kurzicks and the Luxons. A fourth group lives on Shing Jea Island which houses an important training monastery.

I am considering to answer Krytan (Shining blade Krytan if that is eventually possible or if it remains unknown what type of Krytan you are).

The Shining Blade are like the secret service of Kryta. Nothing prevents your character from being in the Shining Blade but you can not officially enter it in-game.

I read that King Alberdern was not the next in line for the thrown, yet he is descended from king Doric.
Who was the next in line for the thrown?

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Duke_Barradin
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tyrian_royalty_family_tree

Anyway, could you please describe a bit of what the Krytan, Elona, Canthan and Acalonian are about (cultures, identities, environment, looks), so that I can choose the one that fits my identity the best?

Kryta, at least modern Kryta, could be compared to rennaisance northwestern Europe. GW1’s Kryta was more mediterranean. Ascalon was similar to medieval northwestern Europe.

As for looks:
GW1 Kryta —> Mediterranean.
GW2 Kryta and GW1 Ascalon --> Northwest European.
Cantha —> Southeast Asian.
Elona --> Arabian and African.

About what happens if the magic runs wild well obvious answer we are gonna use it or better said drain it ourselves by making magic a common place and be used by every being on Tyria.

Like they did on Orr? That ended up so well…

I think the better comparison is the period after the gods released the magic from the bloodstones. After which the increase in power drove people to war. See:

The solution we are presented with in-game it seems is to make the egg a benevolent Elder Dragon, who can absorb excess magic to make sure magic levels never rise too high. Too what extent that plan will work or not remains to be seen of course.

What is the current status of Orr and Risen?

in Lore

Well, we can’t go to Elona or Cantha because there are two more dragon which are blocking our way. Kralkatorrik and Deep Sea Dragon :P

Not just that but within Elona and Cantha there are also forces that prevent us from entering, namely a lich dictator and his army in the former continent and xenophobes in the latter continent. At least, that is the latest information we have on those continents.

So do we have a chance?

in Lore

Diovid.9506

Could this be the edge that would give us a chance to beat the dragon races?

I think the answer is a definite yes. We killed 2 Elder Dragons, where the ancient races killed 0. The better question is: Do we actually want to kill all Elder Dragons and what happens when we do? The understanding we currently have is that without the Elder Dragons magic runs wild which could, at least in the long run, actually be a bigger problem than the Elder Dragons themselves. And if this is what happens without the Elder Dragons, how do we prevent that or limit the effects of that, while also preventing the Elder Dragons from whiping out all (non-corrupted) life.

I wonder of Palawa Joko can usurp Zhaitan’s position? I mean the Risen seem leader less and we’re talking about an undead lich here, so if he could control the Awakened why not the Risen?

I doubt it. Risen are dragon minions which look like undead but aren’t actually undead, at least not in the same way as the Awakened are.

Silverwood, The Exalted, & The Sealed Cavern

Assuming that the structures in the The Sealed Cavern in Silverwastes were, ofc, built and maintained by the Exalted at one point or another

Maintained? Maybe, hard to say. Build? Probably not. I’d say it’s Forgotten build.

Is it safe to assume that, when the Exalted did so, it was when the area was still lush with jungle and tropical life? Would, when the Exalted when to sleep, it still been considered Silverwood?

Also hard to say. The general consensus seems to be that the Exalted were created about 200 years ago (unlike what the blog post says). We know that the area dried out somewhere in the past 250 years.

Under the assumption that Silverwastes is present day Silverwood anyways.

Sort of: http://guide.thatshaman.com/

And speaking of that, does anyone have a rough estimate as to when the Exalted DID go to sleep? I’ve heard some pretty conflicting things as, while they woke when Glint’s legacy returned, they did mourn Glint’s death, but they also went to sleep before her death? I’m a little lost on that front.

There are conflicting sources on that, indeed. However, like I said, the general consensus seems to be about 200 years ago. They might’ve started mourning the moment they woke up and learned of her fate.

And as for the Cavern specifically, is anything else known about it? The entrance to Bloodstone Fen seems to line up directly atop it, comparing the maps, but not having played GW1 before, I’m not sure if that has any significance. Was/is it THE entrance to Bloodstone Fen, or just a coincidence, or?

If you look at That Shaman’s map, it doesn’t really line up with anything.

Edit:
I seem to be equating the moment the Exalted were created and the moment they went to sleep. My bad. I’m not sure if there is a big difference but there might be.

Lets talk half breeds...

My only real question:

Why would you even want this?

These aren’t just genetic offshoots of the same species. A sylvari, charr, and human are more different from each other than a housefly, bonobo chimpanzee, and tyrannosaurus rex.

These aren’t halfbreeds you’re talking about. These would be abominations born from morally questionable acts akin to beastiality

In game my human character is great friends with a number of norn, charr, and asura. In real life I am great friends with a number of dogs, cats, and horses.

I have not once found the act of having those kind of relations with my animal friends even remotely appealing because it’s really gross

Similarly, I’d imagine even the basic concept is extremely distasteful at a core instinctual level to the sentient races of tyria.

Except we know there is interspecies romance and even interspecies sex in Tyria, whatever your thoughts on it are. It might not be common, be it is there.

Furthermore the comparison with dogs, cats and horses is just so far off that it is weird to bring up. If dogs, cats and horses were humanoid, had a civilization, were intelligent and could talk then the comparison would be apt, perhaps, but they are not intelligent, they are not humanoid in shape, they don’t have a civilization and they can’t talk. They might be genetically very different, but at least sylvari, norn and humans are in behavior, mental capabilities and general physical shape very similar.

With all due respect danielrazor but that sounds like a horrible ending. First of because it is too final. Second of, because that is just.. silly.

What I would want and what fits quite neatly in the story, is that we kill all Elder Dragons but now magic levels rise to an unsustainable level (because the Elder Dragons now longer absorb it and the magic they already absorbed flows back into the world), making the world and all of it’s inhabitants so magical that there is a real risk of everything turning to chaos and war (like what happened when the gods opened up the magic from the bloodstones). The story of GW2 ends at that point. However, with that, there is room for novels or games (online or otherwise) that take place afterwards.

So due to work i only had the first 4 episodes of LS2 unlocked.. well i recently helped out a guild mate with some of the episodes that i had no access to beforehand.

Now throughout the entire story so far, all dragons are referred to as “it”

Except for Glint, who is apparently the only dragon that has a gender. “Her”

Why does this specific dragon not follow the rules?

Part of the reason is that Glint is a character we actually get to interact with and in that interaction she has a female voice and a bit of a motherly/grandmothery demeanor. Part of the reason is also that Glint is not an Elder Dragon, unlike the other dragons that are being discussed. Only Elder Dragons are so far above/beyond normal mortal beings that simplistic descriptions such as gender cease to be useful in their description. I mean, sure, most players will describe Zhaitan and Mordremoth as ‘male’ but that doesn’t mean that descriptor is very meaningul in relation to them.

TITLE EDIT: Do Sylvari have genitalia?

No they don’t. It’s explicitly said by an inquest during Living Story 2 chapter 7 in that don’t get detected once then get detected in every room on the next round part. I even gave Trahearne an inappropriate nick name because of it.

They don’t have the internal organs, they do have the external organs.

Who would be the new playable race?

I’m pretty sure the Tengu are the strongest contender for a new race at this point – if there ever will be a new race released. Now they’ve got the professions covered with 3 × 3 different armor classes, so a new race in the next full expansion wouldn’t be that far-fetched actually.

I just hope we don’t have to wait another 3 years for that to happen…

My guess is that now that Anet has idea of what they want to do with the game and has various expandable systems in place (such as masteries, raids, guild halls, elite specs) we will see expansions coming out somewhat more often, as in every 2 years or so. That said, in the past year in an interview about HoT Anet has said about races that the amount of gameplay they add is limited and that ‘currently they won’t spent resources on them’ or something. And while I agree that they will probably not add any more professions, they will still add more elite specs.

We’ll see. I’m still hoping for Tengu and I agree that they are by far the most likely contender.

No there are no genetalia. The story has explained this. They do not reproduce in any way. They sprouted from the pale tree.

The lore says they have external genitals.

Dream and Nightmare

No one knows how long the sylvari live. The oldest of their race are the firstborn, all of whom awakened twenty-five years ago. Sylvari show little signs of growing old, and none have yet died of advanced age. Physically, sylvari are male or female, and the relevant external biology is accurate on both, but they cannot sexually reproduce as the other races do; they have no internal organs capable of creating children. Whether they have their own methods of reproduction outside of the Pale Tree has yet to be seen.

No genetalia. It says Physically. not biologically. Ever seen a Ken doll? Can’t expect an understanding when you’re educated through magazines. Dolls have relevant external biology…but no genetalia. duh.

Anet has literally stated that sylvari can and do have sex (and enjoy it).

Lets talk half breeds...

It’s been confirmed that interspecies romance doesn’t even exist, let alone such interactions between different races.

To me, having no romances between species at all would just be too completely unrealistic. The idea that multiple sentient and intellectually equal races are mingling socially and forming close friendship and companion bonds, but somehow not one single person ever has the desire to take that bond from platonic to romantic… people just don’t work that way. Regardless of how strong the cultural taboos are, there are always going to be a few outliers who will have those feelings and act on them.

Not being able to reproduce makes sense because the Tyrian races are so physically and genetically different, but having no romances at all crosses too far over my suspension of disbelief for me to accept, because even in a fantasy realm people should ultimately act like people.

As has been stated above, castlemanic is wrong in his statement. The opposite of what he said is true.

I wouldn’t underestimate the spike damage you can do with with Rise + Death Nova. If you use Rise in a group of enemies and summon 6 minions, those 6 minions will all die at exactly the same moment 25 seconds later. Which means 6 death nova’s at exactly the same time.

Unholy Sanctuary is unnecesarily defensive I think. Besides, it always seem to trigger death shroud at a moment that is not in my best interest.

Did we find out who gave the egg to the Master of Peace?

- I saw the Master of Peace take an egg.
- Fear not. He did not steal it. He was given custody of it.
- By whom?
- You know. You witnessed it, didn’t you?
- Not clearly.
- Then you’re not meant to know just yet. All things in their time.

No we did not find out. My guess is Gleam, Glint’s older child. But it could be anyone, really. Mister E? Ogden himself? Livia?

A new race is coming, ANET has hinted at it before during pre release HoT hype

That is not true. They said something along the lines of: “At this moment the benefits of adding a race do not outweigh the costs of adding a race”. It is a big leap from that statement to a hint at a new race.

it being Tengu or not is another story entirely but would make sense, Tengu home town/home instance is created and exists, it was scrapped in favor of Sylvari, but assets of it still exist somewhere so they can easily add it as a playable race, just takes time and if ANET finds it worthy to do so/demand high enough.

This is also not true. Sylvari were planned to be playable since EotN. There were originally going to be 6 races though; the ones we have now plus the Tengu.

The Nightmare Court and Mordremoth

in Lore

Diovid.9506

And lastly, the Nightmare Court seems to have it’s own agenda, that honestly, really only cares about them liberating Sylvari from the Pale Tree, could this help Mordremoth’s plans? Absolutely. I would even say there’s probably a lot of overlap. Neither Mordrem-Sylvari or Nightmare Court accept the Pale Tree as their master, that’s definitely a common enemy.

This is not entirely true. First of all, the goal is not liberating Sylvari from the Pale Tree, but liberating Sylvari from all oppressors (which means the firstborn, the tablet, but also, as Faolain points out, Mordemoth). Secondly, they do not want to get rid of the pale tree, they need the pale tree. They just want to change the pale tree.

Ehh, I don’t know, there’s different factions, some of the Nightmare Court, one of the bosses in TA, I forget his name, literally talks about burning down the Pale Tree, but you are right that many want to convert it to their side. We know there are different factions in the Nightmare Court, and even radical factions such as the Toxic Alliance faction. There’s much talk about embracing their ‘true nature’ and that true nature would be being a minion of Mordremoth. I feel like it just depends on who you’re talking about.

Except what they mean by being true to their nature is being free from the tablet. They have (or at least had) no clue they were meant to be minions of Mordremoth, the only Sylvari that knew before the events of HoT were Caithe, Scarlet and Wynne (and maybe Aerin). If the courtiers knew their true nature was being a minion of Mord, most would not say they want to embrace their true nature.

There is some Druid stuff in one of the Auric Basin event chains, with a charr scholar who is really eager to learn the secrets of the druids. I’d have to play the chain again to see if we actually learn anything, though.

That’s about the group called ‘the druids’, not about present-day people picking up nature-y magic-y abilities.
