That’s a lovely graphic.
As to alternating account upgrades, I suppose that would work. For me I just want to keep improving one account. I don’t have to manage two accounts, I get all the goodies, and as a RPer all my alts are available for adventures anywhere in the world.
Yeah, same here, but I can’t make myself just discard that “free core game” thing. chuckles
I can. I’m in the school of thought that the expansion costs what it costs but new purchasers needn’t also buy an older game version to be able to play. I’ve gotten far more than my original $150 of value from the past three years (I bought the CE), and been happy with how much I’ve spent in the gem store on top of that (other than the town clothes issue, which did stop me buying gems on spec and only buying them when a specific item arrived that I wanted enough). I don’t mind the price of HoT at all, though those who do think it’s too high based on current information have legitimate arguments. They’re free to wait to buy it until they know more, and possibly never buy it if even after launch with full disclosure of what’s there (and later down the road when we get more content patched in) they still think it’s more than they want to pull from their wallet. So long as they don’t then complain they don’t get the cool stuff that early adopters did.
Besides, what would I do with a second core game? I had two or three opportunities to buy one for ten bucks this past summer and each time elected not to, though I told my friends the chance was there in hopes they’d buy an account. I’m just happy they’re making it easier for new players to join. Maybe some of the new ones will become good friends of mine in years to come.
I think ANet has bobbled the ball a bit PR wise but the model they’ve settled on is fundamentally fair. They certainly aren’t shady or dodgy or any other -y’s people have ranted about. Want to see an actual example of ripping customers off? Look at Trion.
No one knows yet. Three skins or seven sets, it’s all speculation. We do know that each Elite spec is getting a weapon skin and an armor skin and that there will be a Mistward armor set (the Revenant armor); beyond that is a vast unknown.
One could hope that if a whole armor set was made to honor the new profession that each other profession would get a set (not locked to the profession, but initially gained by it). We’ll find out.
That’s a lovely graphic.

To me the best spot for this is the southeast corner of Mount Maelstrom. There are tons of crabs scuttling around and almost no aggro mobs unless you tag a hermit crab or a tuna while killing a critter crab. Occasionally a shark wanders in. It’s also a really pretty underwater spot and it’s right next to a waypoint.
Another trick is to hit CTRL-T when you have a target you want to keep. If you mouse-move you are inevitably going to deselect your target. If you’ve CTRL-T’d it, not only do you get a big red target symbol over its head, but a quick tap of T reacquires it as a target. Anyone in a party can set a target at any time and everyone else can just tap T to get it. (Or can CTRL-T something else to move the target symbol, so you can get some tug of wars going on that).
1 — You don’t have to fully complete any map though it is handy to get all the waypoints and to do all the hero challenges. The waypoints give you mobility later on, the challenges help you unlock traits and skills faster, and those are all character bound. Any one character that fully completes all the maps gets 2 Gifts of Exploration, and all current legendary weapons use one of those Gifts.
2 — As Oxidia says, you will want groups for dungeons. There are people that can solo them, but they have spent time learning the game and min-maxing. You can either form a group to go to the dungeon, or bring up your social panel and click the LFG tab, then go to the tab for the dungeon you want to run. You can start the first dungeon around level 35 but make sure your party doesn’t demand all 80’s. It’s likely best to set up your own LFG. Either make or a join a party once you are in the map that contains the dungeon, as you will get teleported into the dungeon from anywhere in the map and it’s courteous not to make folks wait for you to go through two loading screens.
Dungeons are also character bound to an extent. That is, they have a Story Mode and an Exploration Mode. The latter is a bit harder than Story, relatively speaking, though even Story can be difficult for someone completely new to the game. Once a character has done Story, they can open an Explorable run. If they haven’t, they need a party member to open it. Whichever character opens the run will be featured in the cut scenes. If you’re going to watch the cut scenes, you should make that clear in your LFG post or you might get rage quitters or people running ahead and clearing stuff before you have a chance to see it yourself.
If you get more points than you need, they’ll be in the bank for whenever the second Elite Spec wave appears. So as long as you don’t hate the very idea of collecting PvE challenges, you may as well grab as many as you can make yourself grind out. At least until they tell us the actual cost, anyway.
That makes me so paranoid since the Leave button is in such a horrid place near buttons I need to hit to get from one guild to another. I think they’ll fix it in the guild interface revamp for HoT, as it was a noticed issue in the CDI.
Meanwhile I’ve gotten a trusted friend to join my guild so that if I do accidentally leave she can invite me back in. Not that I have anything crucial in there, just various runes and sigils and a sprinkling of doubloons. I’d have more but my main guild’s leader cleaned the bank when I was traveling for a weekend without telling me so all my pack rat things such as candy corn, snowflakes and ugly wool etc went poof
Right after I opened my personal 100 slot tab too!
A few days ago I gave him 7g. He is still 7g away from Bolt. Even sent him a whisper of congrats, now he can make his bolt. Did not even get a thank you. I have also sent mats to a person I did not know for their Ascended Pistols with a payback promise. Like Wimpy Burger from Popeye: I’ll gladly repay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. Well we all know how that went. I now have sucker on my chest and a kick me sign on my back. Was just trying to ne nice!! They just mess it up for those who honestly need a little help.
Actually you may have done a service. There is now the ability for those in Map with him to say “Becca gave you 7 gold a few days ago when you said you just needed 7 gold for Bolt. What did you spend her gold on?” And then other people in chat will know he’s scamming.
Not only that, but perhaps ANet can track that transaction, see it in conjunction with his previous “only 7 gold” comments, and determine that he is lying to get money. If they consider it actionable, he can be actioned on
And if he gets banned and decides to spend 50 bucks getting a new account so he can do the same thing, his AP will be so low that anyone checking will see he hasn’t had time to get that close to buying Bolt.
I dunno, I think there is zone specific music. You get music in Timberline that you’ll never hear in Caledon. Each city has its own tunes as well.
Most of Soule’s OST sounds so alike, though, that it’s easy to mix up pieces. I can’t hear most of it and peg it to where it goes in the game unless I’m in that tune’s zone, at which point I recognize that it’s the right tune for where I am. If I had a more discerning musical ear maybe I could.
Congrats on doing it yourself! That usually feels much more satisfying in the long run.
It’s possible to not craft at all in this game. But yes, unless you follow a specific guide and make/discover only what it tells you to, it will take a while to level up crafting skill.
At least they added the system where you can click in a recipe on the mats to go in nested panels to where you make those. Cooking was a real nightmare before that because you had to scroll all over to make each piece to make higher pieces to make the final piece. I had to write down what I was doing, or mutter out loud to myself to keep track of just why I had made that bowl of Baker’s Wet Ingredients …
Aiie, I don’t believe I read that wrong. I even honeymooned in Vienna, I certainly know the difference between the countries!
I know I’ve seen people commenting on the stores in Germany that carry HoT. There should be plenty in Austria as well. If not and your friend is near the border, likely he could jaunt over to make the purchase.
At the end of the PoI Rubi said we’d get a chance to test the Tempest soon. Her intonation suggested this was more than the soon™ we jest about, enough so that I won’t be surprised if this coming weekend is a beta including the elites revealed thus far.
No guarantee, of course, but I’m cautiously optimistic. I was surprised Twitch chat didn’t jump on the comment, though I think it was still caught up in some other flood of chatter at the time.
Rubi once commented that the PoI’s get uploaded as quickly as possible, but they are long videos and the guy responsible has to take a sizable chunk of time to get it done. It’s not just a matter of creating a link. She was amazed he gets it uploaded as quickly as he usually does.
Good thinking, Dastion. (2) sounds intriguing.
I think there’s something to support the idea that ’vari’s won’t be force changed as well: They’ve said there will be multiple paths in each LS instance, some unlocking as you gain Masteries, and you’ll be able to replay the instance with different choices. So it’s entirely possible the ’vari player will choose whether to take a corruption line or not.
Assuming no hotfixes, the easiest way is to tag the wurms in the first part then let them kill you. You stay dead while your groupmates go finish the boss. So you do need at least one party member with you and it’s likely best if you’re not the instance starter.
There is a list of official retailers who are legitimately selling the game (again, could use someone else providing the link). I believe Vayne is Australian? He’s a helpful sort, and should know what stores have the game Down Under. Hopefully he’ll see this thread
Fishing threads have popped up many times. What I’ve seldom seen is a suggestion as to how to avoid the need to keep your cursor over the bobber and your finger on the button ready to click at the random moment the bobber dips. I know that is designed to prevent bots from fishing. But it turns the activity into incredible tedium because I can’t type in chat — might miss the bobber — can’t spin my camera around — might miss the bobber — can’t look away from the screen — might miss the bobber. All I can do is stare at the screen for 20-30 seconds waiting to click.
Any ideas on how to make fishing dynamic?
I’ve been playing for 3 months or so. After working some to buy exotic gear, I looked on the infamous “ascended” tier and was not amused. I quickly lost all my interest tbh.
Thought this game wouldn’t have this bs, seems I was mistaken. It’s a shame since it had so much potential.
Take a closer look. You do not need the Ascended gear. It’s a stat increase, yes, but not one vital to game play unless you specifically want to run high end Fractals, the only place where you need the infusion slots. Also they’ve promised there will never be a tier beyond it. Even Legendaries have the same stats, just with the addition of being able to swap them at will out of combat.
You’re not alone in your disdain for the very idea of Ascended. The raging threads were epic when it debuted. But it’s turned out to just be a thing in game that people can go for if they want. I have made almost no Ascended (and what I’ve made has been for the skins), I’m not even min-maxed in my builds, and I do fine in all the PvE content.
As I understand it from WvW posters, the stat increase won’t win a fight for you there unless you and your opponent(s) are exactly equally matched in skill. Which doesn’t happen.
If you would like help in any of your PS steps, let me know. While I haven’t seen every level 10-20 racial permutation (not enough Norns, Charr, or Asura in my stable), I have seen everything after that so I can give advice, aid in DPS, rez you, etc. I’m on NA and available in the afternoons the next couple of days, then further available starting next Wednesday. I’m definitely on at reset each day (except this Sunday, I have tabletop) so you can ping me in game then.
I won’t be available Monday because I’m nuking the hard drive and ditching the computer at Best Buy recycling
I agree that it’s odd we’ve had nothing in the Gem Store. Otoh I’ve been relieved as the Gem drought has exactly coincided with my month away from home and I really would rather not put my PayPal password in anywhere but my home computer.
I fly home on Tuesday. So unless they have a flash one day sale on Tuesday I’ll be able to freely purchase new shinies once I am home! I suppose I can check and during my hour in Chicago I can beg guildies to buy me a must-have one-day thing, to be repaid asap
You can also buy the loot bags from the Silverwastes Camp Resolve merchant (second tab, bottom item). They cost 10 crests and a few copper each and I think I average 1 in 4 of them providing a T6 mat. I have not scientifically tracked this so I might be estimating on the high side.
So far as far as I know there are no CD’s. Prepurchasers get a jewel case with a code inside. I would recommend against bothering with CD’s even if they do come out, as the game patches frequently enough that they’ll be obsolete by the time you buy them, let alone just a few weeks after that. You won’t be able to get along without doing digital downloading, so why not start with that? Also if you buy directly from ANet you have a better chance of Support being able to help you with issues or refunds at need.
HoT is an upgrade to the current game. It happens to include the base game so new purchasers don’t have to buy two versions. There is only one price for HoT (plus more for versions with digital goodies). So you get the HoT key and apply it to your base game account on the registration page and then you have a HoT account that includes everything you’ve done in the base game. (I know this to be true, I prepurchased and put the key on my account I’ve been using since launch).
If you bought the base game after the HoT announcement, you are eligible for a refund within certain parameters so that you end up only paying the HoT price. I think the deadline for that is July 31. Check the HoT forums and FAQ pages for details. Or perhaps someone who knows where the links are can provide them; I’ve had no interest in refunds so I’ve paid little attention.
About the “defend events:” My impression is that you don’t have to defend the guild hall to keep it. It’s a lore comment, not a game play mechanic, that the halls are offered to those willing to keep fighting for them. They did after all say that after you unlock the hall it’s yours forever, or until you capture a new hall.
Maybe there are defend events you can trigger on purpose for fun? Though that begs the question of what happens if the event fails.
It could just be wishful thinking on my part. I was one of the stronger proponents of and lobbyers in the Guild Halls CDI for not having ownership decay, and I’ve been seizing on bits and pieces of blogs and commentaries to support my hope that they listened.
I honestly think they should do one elite spec a week but combine that with one of the new maps so we can get through the info quicker.
I agree they should double up on the weekly info (though not necessarily tell us about the maps until we can go explore them). I do think players have the brain power to review more than one focused piece of information at a time. Maybe the devs don’t have the resources to monitor feedback on too many things at once?
I love how WASH THE PAIN AWAY became an instant thing. I think ANet missed a bet though. The Air shout should include LIGHTNING BOLT, LIGHTNING BOLT, LIGHTNING BOLT! … and possibly have a tossed bean bag.
^_^
I think maybe the OP didn’t realize there was a Dawn in the mix, based on his/her post about not expecting the buy order to fill. Though then I wonder how s/he noticed a Dawn had been salvaged.
I prefer not knowing all that, Tyloric. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones to stumble on Shadow Behemoth without warning early on but so many posters wrote about how awesome an experience it was. I’m eager to explore and see things without spoilers.
However, one of these upcoming weeks they will give us a blog on “challenging group content” and that likely will reveal at least some of what you’re asking for.
They do seem to have broken the developing pattern in which they followed the profession blurbs laid out in https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/ going row by row. They skipped Ranger to go on to Elementalist.
So now it’s all up in the air what order the rest will be in. But I really hope that it will be one a week, with perhaps a one week detour into challenging group content because if so they will juuuust have time to get it all in before the 3rd anniversary. Though they wouldn’t be able to beta it all at that rate, so yeah. I no longer feel Aug 28 is viable.
Vayne is correct. A large clump of people makes an almost irresistible target for people with a supply of Harpy hearts.
I think plenty of people will be out there offering to help with guild hall getting. I know I will. Unless the fight is hours long, I can well imagine a rotation with people taking turns helping the fights for small and solo guilds.
There may be some mercenaries involved, but I won’t charge a copper for my help (though I will likely secure my own hall(s) first).
The Points of Interest is up later tonight, 20:00 BST.
That’s in 3 hours and 15 minutes from now for those needing to figure out their time zone conversions. Though if you’ve watched PoI in the last few weeks, rest assured it will be at the exact same time on your clock today as it was then (unless your own time zone has had a clock change).
I hadn’t noticed the lack of a video and I am sad now that I have had it brought to my attention. Maybe they didn’t like the dubbed versions some fans did? Or maybe the cinematics team is working on something bigger and just didn’t have time to spare.
You continue to rock. One thing, you are NA, I believe? You should make that clear in the details part.
They already did. We had a revenant beta weekend. Before you say that doesn’t count because it was just a profession and not a new map, keep in mind that it was the first one where every prepurchaser got automatic access per the advertised “access to all beta weekend events.”
But that’s how the physics of back wings in real life work.
My version or Ronpierce’s version?
I don’t mind if the wings are a bit stiffer. But when a bird runs with wings out, the wings don’t jerk in unison right-left-right-left. (Heck, even a running human pumps the arms alternately, not in full unison with a torso swing). That’s what made them look super fake to me. It irritates me on the Sylvari cultural armor with the back petals, too.
I’m happier with them flowing instead of jerking rigidly back and forth when running. I think of them as costume pieces, not functional wings, just something Tyrians have made to adorn themselves.
The previous stiff jerkiness was distressing to my eyes in the same way as ceiling fans, whirling orbs around characters, flickering wasp wings, swishing charr and drake tails, or any other back and forth strobing motion is. As in I get motion sickness. So I’m all for the physics that got introduced.
They are against forum rules. There at least used to be a sticky “These forums are not a grey market,” though that was in the now defunct Black Lion subsection.
ANet does not in any way support direct player to player trading, especially to avoid the Black Lion gold sink.
Nothing at all. LA, traits change, those were mere faradiddles.
requirements for hot (story / character etc.)
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I do not believe you will need to have done any past content. The HoT storyline will likely assume that you have and NPC’s will react to your character as if that character had been through the story, but you won’t be barred from playing just because you didn’t do the earlier stuff. You just won’t understand some of the plot points (unless you have read up on the story thus far).
The only real requirement to play HoT is to buy it and apply the code to your account. Oh, and to have a computer that can handle the game.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/No-Subscription-is-not-a-FAVOR/first#post5311809
I don’t know if you’ll get merged, but you’ll certainly find an ongoing discussion on your topic there.
I know it’s been a bee in your bonnet for quite a while, Orpheal, and I appreciate that it matters so much to you. I believe in the power of names and do my best to call others what they want to be called and even to pronounce it correctly if it doesn’t completely baffle my American English tongue.
But I don’t think the problem lies in the names ANet chooses (leaving “Dragonhunter” aside) so much as in what the translation team does when it goes for literal translations instead of the closest connotative equivalent. ANet is primarily steeped in American English, they are based in the US, and they just aren’t going to intuitively write in other languages.
I can write in German. Well, at one time I could. I studied it for five years and got to the point of pronouncing it without an American accent. For a term project I helped write a murder mystery script for a video we did in class. But at my best I couldn’t write a good poem in German to save my life, whereas I think I can craft a pretty darn good Shakespearean sonnet in English without a hint of doggerel.
You’re asking people to think of fine nuance in foreign languages when choosing how to write in their native tongue. That’s simply not feasible. Yell at the translators, not the original writers, hmm?
I’d love to be able to pass on duplicate items as well. I’m not sure it would work with this game’s loot model, though, where everyone rolls on their own table and the drops are all calibrated with that in mind.
There might also be some major flameouts too, though ANet can’t be held responsible for players being jerks. Still, imagine how nasty it could get with people demanding they get the passed-on loot.
I believe each episode is 200 gems, with some discount if you buy them all. See this wiki page for exactly which episode you need for the pants:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Carapace_Legging_Box
How long it takes depends on whether you wipe or not. No Refuge is widely regarded as the absolute hardest segment of Living Story. It helps to have a group, even if you aren’t going for the achieves. I’d say the whole thing takes well under an hour if there are no wipes. You have one large battle fight, maybe ten minutes? And a boss fight, another ten? And all the unskippable dialogues surrounding the fights. But if you are chewing glass and dying repeatedly, as I did my first time in there, it can take much longer.
Keep in mind that whoever starts the instance will be playing as Caithe, with her skill bar, not as their own alt. Group mates keep their own skills. If you aren’t the one who starts the instance, make sure you have that episode active in your story.
… did you just say a sub game fixes bugs, exploits, and glitches right away? And has more frequent content releases?
/steps out of the way of the stampede of refuters.
Elite Specializations & Hero Point Feedback [Merged]
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I believe Anet has stated in multiple times in POIs, that you need about 65 hero point.
Those statements were from before the changed plan. They meant that to do a full core unlock you’d need level 80 + 65 challenges. Then they changed it to level 80 for a full core, and an unknown number for the Elite. So the 65 number is obsolete (though it could of course be the amount needed, if they want to be nice to people that went and got the challenges in anticipation of the new system based on earlier statements).
You’re reading a whole lot into one sentence. It could just mean in the LS and subsequent PS, it could mean your ’vari gets turned but then finds redemption in some manner. I have great faith that ANet will never force PvP in PvE zones as that gets rid of the “be glad to see another player” goal.

We don’t know yet. If you have the energy to hunt down hero challenges now, well, it won’t be wasted effort. Eventually you’ll have a use for the points. Heck, I got all 14 of my 80’s to at least 100 points credited in the world completion panel before they changed it to give a full unlock at 80, and I’m very glad to have those points in the bank now.
Oh, now, the Mad King is a superb idea. Think of all the pumpkin related effects and the horrible jokes constantly in your ear.
