it should cleanse 3 conditions, evade backwards and grant 6 seconds of vigor. with a 36 second CD. If it did that, it would be perfect.
3 random condis or 3 specific condis? I know I’d rather be able to use it to drop immob cripple chill EVERY time rather than a grab bag of 3, would also make it a lot more amazing for my great escape ability lol.

Hardly the most viable spec, it’s just the easiest to play spec we have and it still nets a lot of reward. Trapper is still an amazing build for point defense, especially if you’re a good trapper ranger, but imo where ranger really shines is roaming, which tons of builds do well with.

All of the weapon ranges I posted are from the current tooltips and weapons wiki.
What I’m trying to get at is that some of the weapons and their individual skills are not realistic.
They may have been more realistic at the start but through “balancing” some of them don’t really make sense. The fact that you can throw a dagger farther than you can shoot an arrow is a good example but there are lots of them. The reason I am concerned is that there appears to be a reduction in damage for some ranged weapons. Which? How much damage reduction? Has the reduction changed along with the changes in range some weapons have gone through?
I was simply trying to generate discussion to see if anyone else was concerned.
No lies were spread.
We are a master of ranged weaponry, so of course we could throw a knife a long distance when we “master” in it. Also keep in mind just because you’re throwing a dagger that far doesn’t mean it’s as effective, SB auto attack still does more damage than that dagger afterall…

Lol as hilarious as the other posts are they don’t help OP at all….
Anet IS going to make a new batch of legendaries, they were actually going to be out this year but stuff came up so they said they should be out sometime without the first half of 2014, keep in mind that was an estimate by them and it’s totally subject to change.
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
Uh…. What are you talking about? SB is 900 bro, none of those you said go that far stop spreading lies.
A Mesmer goes further than that with their lazor beamz on GS, ele goes further with their staff (they’re walking artillery afterall), guardian goes further than that with their nearly worthless tennis ball launcher, and engis can throw grenades further because of science and that kitten.
Not many things out range the SB, and NOTHING outranges the traited LB, only thing that comes close is engi, but that’s a tie in range.

@Gorwald, you do realize trapper builds are one of our best builds atm right? It’s an insanely strong home point defender, and can bring quite a bit to a team fight in terms of AoE pressure and area denial as well.
As someone else said all you need to make ranger strong in wading through zergs is to pair them with a guardian and/or warrior who can give them some stability or be a signet ranger and also use enlargement.
My Necro Wells build > largely any traper build of rangers.
Did traps give protection to people inside? Wells do
Did traps heal the ranger on each tick? Wells do
Did traps can crit? Wells do
Did traps can remove conditions of friends teammates? Wells do
Did traps can remove buffs of ennemies? Wells do
Did traps can blind? Wells do
Did traps can be effective while spreading points in trees? No traps need 30 points in preci/%crit damage to be effective (lol), wells are effective and you can spread points in differents lines to have passive bonus to themSorry to dissapoint you…but wells > traps
And saying that to be effective you have to pair with a warrior or a guardian…lol
Warrior btw give stability with elite banner, i really doubt any warrior whould break an instant rez just to give stability to a ranger….or it’s a really dumb warrior
And to have stability as a ranger you choice Rampage as one or a signet who need 30 point in a trait line to affect you…lol
So what you’re saying, is because you can provide better support with wells and they have better effects (they kittening better when they’ve got double the CD) that well necro is better at home point defense than a trap ranger? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
You know how you counter a well necro? You get out of their wells, wait 12s then you go back and kick their teeth in because they can’t do jack kittening kitten now because all their kitten is on CD, for a trap ranger if you try that he’s gonna just throw his traps back onto you and knock you down in them so you get nice and dotted up.
PS: incase you didn’t realize trap builds are hybrid damage, that’s why they’re so effective at killing people.
Trap builds are hybrid damage? You mean you are running traps with Carrion gear? When I used to run around in Carrion (mind you I didn’t play ranger as good as I do now) it felt rather squishy. Even if you have 23k hp, low toughness is just meh… Can you link a build of hybrid damage trapper? I reeeeeaaaaally hope it has pvt/rabid/zerker/knight gear… cause that is what I have.
It’s just a trapper build using rabid or rampager gear…. depends on how much damage/survivability i want.

So what’s the general consensus here? Rangers aren’t useless just not useful?
I’ve got 3 maxed out rangers and I can tell you this: when you have a choice of your dream team, either for high level fractals, dungeons, wvw roaming, spvp, ranger will always be behind the other classes. Not because it is “bad”, but because there are other classes that are “more useful” in a team.
Best regards
this is not true, for a normal pve max dmg group you need a ranger, in tpvp ranger are very strong too and dont say that ranger are bad or weak in roaming ><
I support this, however it all depends on the ranger. I always find myself being the last man standing, not entirely depending on my build. The way I use the ranger mechanics allow me to be a kittenet to my group, which is what every ranger should bring to their party. I have also tagged with rangers who simply didn’t do enough to be up to par with the rest of the group, so you need to know who your ranger is, especially if you plan on having a ‘dream team’ type of party.
It’s very rare for me to NOT be the last man standing on my ranger and my ele in PvE, so many fights I’ve had to finish by myself because everyone else died xD. Even when I run zerker on ranger (granted it’s rare) it takes a while for me to finally go down, they’re just really really good at survival.
Funny thing you mention eles, I find that ele + ranger makes an amazing combo for PvE combat, Fractals and dungeons too. As a matter of fact, a ranger that plays right kind of plays a bit like an ele, minding your weapon skill rotations, keeping the damage always flowing, applying regen in a very consistent basis for your allies; you can see that in condition damage rangers especially. I wonder if ranger + ele can play out well in WvW, I’ll have to give it a try.
I gotta say, ele + ranger is ridiculously strong together, the ele provides a ton of fields, ranger applies a ton of finishers, and if you give a ranger a conjure weapon your enemies gonna have a bad time.

Huh just tested it when Rennoko, on necro, with 4 different fear sources, only ever hit 5 seconds.
There’s no cap to fear, there’s a cap on how many times you can STACK fear, the ranger fear is ridiculously long by default, there’s no stacking really going on.

How many Splitblades have cancelled when enemies walk right through me, going on full cooldown without actually throwing any axes? Probably more than I’d be comfortable with.
Can someone confirm this?
It doesn’t go on full CD, it does what any and all ranged attacks do when the target moves behind/to the side of you it’ll go on the “interrupted CD” which is about the same time as splitblades actual CD i believe.

The fact that you need to be paired up is quite sad its not a strong point like you seem to be making out of it.
You do realize I’m only talking about wading into the heart of the Zerg right? And I also said if you were utilizing the proper build you’d be able to do it yourself, reading comprehension is hard.

Not all bugs, but some annoyances:
- Other : Explosion combos not showing
- Other : Ability to move with second hand axe #5
- Other : Pet stats to scale with ranger’s armor/trinketsCan someone confirm on warhorn not triggering its blast finisher and/or not showing the message?
I agree that axe #5 could use some changes to allow movement. It’s what keeps me from using offhand axe.
Yes it’s odd that pets don’t scale with armor tiers or have their own stat item. I also don’t understand why they don’t have their own traits menu.
Warhorn 5 is not bugged, I was using it a few hours ago to splash in my healing spring and to make everyone frosty.

Durz is actually right, you can predict what your pet does. For example wolves almost always execute their leap on F1 while drakes use tail swipe. The main problem is of you want to save those abilities. That’s where having access to more pets may be better.
A possible solution is to raise the stats of all pets and make it so you only have one pet.
Then the pet commands can be changed to:
F1 toggle for Auto-attack and return.
F2 as is.
F3 for skill 3
F4 for skill 4
To be honest if they did this I’d be ecstatic, I’d much rather have one pet than 2, and then you’d also get micro, and your pet would be stronger to boot.

the pet AI is really smart
dude…. cmon
Lol I mean when they’ll use the skills the AI was out in charge of controlling, when it comes to you making your pet do stuff , like “yo drake use your F2 on that guy!” They’re pretty freaking kittened, and then the whole F4 delay…. But other than that I don’t have many issues with them.

Idk what you’re talking about with pew pew builds not working well, my current tPvP build is a roaming pew pew build that utilizes CC and evasiveness as its defenses instead of tankyness…
Well, in my oppinion, a longbow ranger works well if you have a team that can keep an eye on you so you dont go splat. At least thats how it goes with me. Iv’e tried several Lbow builds and each and every time i ran into a problem that if a opponent is actively trying to kill me i cant deal enough damage to take them down. And i can deal enough damage with condi sbow for the life of me (condi/tanky build).
Now im not THAT new to pvp in gw2 but when i actively cant kill anyone unless they dont try to kill me it tells me that i doing something wrong.I try to make my own builds cause i think that copy/paste of someone elses trait build means diddly squat.
You gotta use your stealth, knockback, and cripples/immobilizes well to stay up, when I run really glassy I tend to stick to my ranged option about 95% of the time and only go into Melee when I absolutely have to (normally for the evades) or if I know I can get the kill.
Then again my glassy build is 30 marks, 20 WS, 20 BM, I’ve got a TON of vigor, and then I also run a fernhound and vampire runes with bloodlust sigils so I’ve got a pretty good amount of healing going from outside sources.
I’ve had several thieves get really mad because they could kill me lol, always makes me smile when silly little glass cannon thieves can’t kill the glassy LB ranger xD.
PS: meditation guardians sorta hard counter me because every 3 seconds they can teleport onto my face, but other than that I’ve yet to have a problem,

A couple i discovered recently after shelving the necro and started working on my ranger
Axe kills count as sword kills
Regeneration doesnt work on pet (no idea if the rest work too,i could swear i never noticed any difference with boons or not)Well my pets have definitely been healed by regen on a regular basis seeing as how i’ve ran perm regen builds before… so this either has to be an extremely recent thing or is wrong.
Was in hylek over eb,pet got hit a few times and said to drop regen for it.
Only the signet regen worked, the pet still had the buff but no ticks of the regen.
And this was a day or two ago.
I’ll check it out tomorrow, I don’t run the signet or the trait so any healing my pet gets should be from my heal skill and the regen I give him.
You sure he wasn’t full health or dead? Your pet won’t “heal” of either of those are true (sig will heal a dead pet granted)
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
No, we don’t need it and it would make it very clunky in terms of being able to command the pet.
And we are not handicapped, the pet AI is really smart on when to use their skills, if you stop for a moment and learn when the pets use their skills and fight around that, as well as watching your pet to see what they’re doing, you’ll be a lot better off and realize that it’s in no way, shape or form “random”.
And i don’t know why you’re dragging Engineer and elementalist in here, they have very simple prof mechanics, the engineers profession mechanic is about as simple as it gets, all it is is 4 extra utility skills. Elementalist just gives them 2 additional weapon swaps, not very complex.
The reason that elementalists sit in one attunement in PvE is because many people play elmenetalist so they can be “The mage” and they want to be an <insert element here> mage and as such they think that they can play effectively by not using any other attunement.
It’d be like if you rolled ranger and think “I don’t wanna use a pet!” so you keep it on passive the whole time and never actually do anything involving the pet and never send it in, you’re gimping yourself because you’re not playing the prof because you have some stupid notion in your head that the square peg will fit through the circle hole.

If we’re talking other issues now, is there any reason why my pet shouldn’t gain bloodlust stacks when I do? The Ranger and pet are meant to work as one unit in Anet’s own words along with they way they balance, and yet runes and sigils don’t affect them. It’s also a reason signets should affect both by default, but that’s been brought up so many times since release I’m not holding my breath.
Why would sigils work with a rangers pet? They don’t scale on our stats at all so it makes no sense for them to be doing so with bloodlust or any of those effects…
They’re a physical entity that can gain boons, I don’t understand why they shouldn’t gain bloodlust? I understand sigils and runes as they aren’t using armor or weapons. But bloodlust most certainly should be given to the pet.
Hell, I’d argue things like WXP bonuses like guard killer and such should as well. Minions I understand… they’re temporary and don’t handicap the class by their mere existence. But Ranger pets are unique. If we’re to be handicapped, the pet should benefit from world bonuses just like us.
But bloodlust isn’t a boon, me putting bloodlust sigils on my weapon is just that, an effect on the WEAPON, my allies don’t gain bloodlust when I do unless they’re using a bloodlust Sigil in their current weaponset when something dies, why should our pets magically gain a Sigil effect just because it’s a stat boost?
Next you’re going to be asking for sig of intellect, doom, battle, etc to work on the pet too, it just flat out doesn’t make sense for it.
When they said bloodlust I thought they meant the blood lust buff for WvW, not the sigil. My bad for the confusion (btw, I don’t know if they pet already gets bloodlust, but if it doesn’t it should just like a normal boon. I haven’t played in awhile).
I’d ASSUME you get Bloodlust (WvW buff) on your pet, I assumed he meant the Sigil lol, if we don’t get the WvW bloodlust on our pet it’s just stupid and we should lol.

Wall of Thorns: Summon an unpassable wall at your feet. Anyone that passes through it (stability) is immobilized for 1 second. Projectiles cannot pass through it.The wall can be destroyed and has 50,000 health. Duration: 10 seconds. 1min cooldown.
I’d say also make it apply 5stscks of bleeding to anyone who touches the wall, would make for some nice synergy with fear and point blank shot to just smash people into our wall of thorns lol

hey thats a nice idea ranger has 1 actual real stealth for its whole build that shout could make it interesting for pvp situation. better yet you could keep attacking while stealthed for a few second this would give ranger the edge in pvp it never actualy benefited from.
It would also solidify them as THE ranged prof because that would make them insanely powerful at range because it’d be very very very hard to counterattack them.

From what I understand of how it works, it is akin to tying the pet to the spot that you select, but the pet has a 1200 foot “leash” from that spot that it will attack people in, so if you were close it could have gone past you to attack but still been tied to the spot.
Also the skill will cancel and they will return if you get too far from them, the wiki states that to be about 3000 feet, so that may also have happened. That would make perfect sense. I was within 1200 foot of where I put the pet to guard. Ty for explaining
Just adding into what he was saying about tethering your pet there… Your pet used to use that as their “leash” range, I haven’t tested it recently but you used to be able to get your pet pretty kittening far from you (3000 from you to center of guard + 1200 from your pets target to center of guard)

I’ve heard that the ranger is a very bad class to play….I just want to see if its true! I want to use my ranger in WvW solo/small group roaming.
It’s not -bad- when using good builds, it just has some very stupid design choices (like all our utilities being worse than other prof utilities without 30pt investment), and the builds that do work very well tend to be super passive and boring instead of being fun to play.

At “Other issues” I added the fact that dead pets go on an excessively long 60 second cooldown. Who agrees or disagrees that it should be on the list? Also, what “other issues” are there which aren’t exactly bugs, but bother you anyway?

Smoke Bomb
Trap
Place a smoke bomb that’ll detonate when an enemy triggers it causing 10s of 5 stacks of confusion and 10s of 5 stacks of torment, it also leaves a haze of smoke that blinds for 1s every 1s and is a smoke field.

Pet grant regen, might fury, condition removal they also kd and cripple and at the very least another target. There are problem with pets but they are not useless. That is the player not properly utilizing them.
Even if played perfectly, pets will still die to any AoE or cleave heavy fight, unless that pet is extremely tanky, in which case the pet probably isn’t too useful to begin with.
I run 30 points into BM from time to time and it completely disgusts me when my pet cats, whom keep in mind have constant 500 hps from traits and regen, die from merely ONE person with strong aoe or cleave. It’s just a poor, disgraceful, balancing mess.
You’re using cats, cats are for all intents and purposes a pocket thief, IE very squishy, very high damage, they need to be getting in and out of dangerous areas or they’re going to implode under any sort of pressure, if you were using a slighly bulkier pet that still had some damage that wouldn’t be the case.
PS: I’m assuming you’re talking about small scale like 5v5 and smaller stuff, not zerg warfare, in a zerg anything that’s not a bear is going to die in half a second, a bear will probably last about 2 seconds if you’re lucky.
Cats are indeed squishy, but that is why I go 30 into beastmastery and pick up Natural Regeneration and then Signet of the Wild and then ensure my pet has perma regen. I want to make them as tanky as possible. But then, when a single guardian or necro or engi comes by and absolutely facerapes my pets while I’m constantly swapping and micromanaging them, I just get incredibly frustrated. How come with all my effort and skill, I can’t even ensure my god kitten class mechanic has 100% uptime? Every other class gets it. A guardian can never lose access to his virtues, but he can single handedly take away my class mechanic.
Sure, I could use tankier a pet. But that won’t eliminate the fact that all my effort put into making a dps usable becomes simply wasted effort.
Cats literally need all the help they can get, one thing i’d recommend if you’re running 2 cats is to also take carnivorous appetite, that has always helped mine stay up extremely well while running the same (or similar) traits as you are.
Another suggestion is to run a cat and a slightly tankier pet that you know can eat up the damage IE: a bear, or drake, or pig, or canine.

PS: I’m assuming you’re talking about small scale like 5v5 and smaller stuff, not zerg warfare, in a zerg anything that’s not a bear is going to die in half a second, a bear will probably last about 2 seconds if you’re lucky.

Eh… I’d have to say no, pets are very useful (although buggy) once their AI gets fixed up so they aren’t kittened (in the literal sense of the word) for 5s when summoned they’ll probably be great overall even if their F2s aren’t responsive…
That being said i do think we should have an option for petless rangers… i’d still like to see only having one pet that is summoned through F4 and stays out until stowed or killed and then F1-F3 being something non pet related while the pet is stowed, but i don’t see that coming out anytime soon…

In this case, I had only used guard and had my back turned when my pet came running past me in pursuit of an opponent. That was what had me so confused. But as I said, it might just have been a bug since I unequipped the skill after and never used it again. Have to admit though, I wasn’t timing the skill as I was busy fighting something else.
Well the skill lasts for like 2 minutes, so unless you were fighting for a long time it probably wasn’t that.
That’s strange though, i used guard a lot when Natures Voice or w/e it’s called first came out (regen and swiftness on shout) and i always liked how my pet would always stay in that one area and maul anyone who came into the radius since i normally keep my pet on passive lol.
PS: Pets on Guard like to lead with their CC on thieves coming out of stealth, just something i’ve noticed.

One thing I noticed when using ’’guard’’ was that the pet did not stay where I set it to. A passing opponent got it far off the point, I’d indicated. May just have misunderstood the skill, but I kind of thought it was supposed to stay on the area it was set to guard, not pursue something into the distance.
I did not test it extensively though, as the skill didn’t perform well enough to keep. So this may be intended or may be a rare bug.
Did you override the Guard “command” with another? IE did you use F1-F4 or another shout? If so that cleared the Guard “command” and set it back onto normal AI, if you had only used Guard (and the time on the skill didn’t run out) then your pet should’ve ran back to where you put him after the enemy ran out of the radius.

Im saying its not a real powerbuild, its a BM build
Just because you use BM stuff doesn’t suddenly make it a non power build…

Does anyone know if superior runes of the mesmer’s sixth bonus correctly affects Hilt Bash and Concussion Shot? Trying to work out a build using the six rune bonus plus Moment of Clarity to see how long a daze I can get. Couple this with ice sigil(s) on a bow and some frosty pets and it sounds like a good bit of CC.
Moment of clarity affects stuns, rune of the mesmer affects dazes.
Moment of Clarity boosts Stuns, Dazes, and Fear that you cause by 100%, granted fear isn’t listed there… But it may just be the whole “rangers don’t have any direct access to it” sorta thing since it has always given us the buff since it’s an interrupt…
@OP: if you run Mesmer runes also pick up some sigs of paralyzation for total lock down.

you sure it wasn’t corrupt boon? it’s usually corrupt boon
you cant corrupt stability on lyssa
I dont understand why all people reply to : fear is removed. When i say with stability up, i mean it this way!
You can totally corrupt the stability on Lyssa runes, just like you can steal the stability from Lyssa runes.

Anything other then trapper or spirit ranger your wasting your time and need to gtfo. Longbow and greatsword rangers are horrible and make rangers look bad. Ranger doesn’t belong in melee range with all the better CC so many other classes have like warrior, necro, and thieves. Longbow is so easy to dodge its not even funny, you get 1 knockback if your lucky and thats pretty much all longbow is good for. Signet Rangers are by far the most lazy of the ranger builds and should be ashamed of running full signets. Also signet rangers have no aoe or support whatsoever. If anyone disagrees with any of this i would love to be proved wrong ^.^
Bad signet rangers are lazy and passive, a good signet player (regardless of class) id say is more complicated than most builds because you have to know when you want to give up your passive, how many of them you want to give up at a time, and when you’re better off roughing it out and waiting.
And longbow rangers aren’t bad, they’re just harder to play than SB, because they’re harder to play you’ll see more bad people with it than another.
EX: there’s significantly more bad eles out there than bad warriors because warrior is significantly easier to play at the high skill end than an ele is.

You picked trap potency trait by mistake in the spvp build..
Y man i feel you..Thieves are totally destroying us….If you dont play settlers you are totally wrecked..
Some devs play thief, while noone play Ranger in spvp……So they dont know what is likeYou can do EXTREMELY well against thieves as a ranger with both the bows, keep them away from you, you probably can’t win in a direct Melee vs Melee fight but you will ALWAYS outclass them at ranged vs ranged.
Thats what im trying to do but they got like a million gap closers..Ive seen thiefs waste 2-3 heartseekers just to reach me…the problem is that if you make a mistake and one of them hits you, its like 5k dmg…….And i dont want to talk about the S/D ones….Its just that thieves have forgiving zerker builds while Rangers have a really tough one.And im not really sure that a perfectly played Power Ranger>medium played Spirit Ranger..I tend to believe that medium Spirit Ranger>perfectly Power Ranger
Vs thieves id say you’re right (unless I get the opening shot from 1.5k away), but that’s because thieves just do well against any zerker that’s not in plate mail.
And I’d agree that thieves zerker build is a lot more forgiving due to almost all their burst skills giving them evade as they spam it (which is annoying as hell), rangers gotta kite well to win with zerker.
PS: keeping them perma crippled (or chilled) really hinders most Melee profs gap closers and makes them a lot less threatening, so if you’re zerker make sure you’re using those!

Actually its pretty much spirits or gtfo..
You can have fun with Traps-BM even Power Ranger but every top team that has a Ranger is a spirit one..
Just because it hasn’t become meta yet doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the potential, sPvP (especially solo qs) seems pretty ripe with screams of complaint about CC locking rangers, not to mention might stacking has recently become a very strong option for ranger ( I’ll be posting a build when I get home from work).
Trapper builds have remained totally unchanged and have just say in the same spot they always have, great at defending a point, great at 1v1s and 2v2s, not too much else though (granted you don’t need to be that good at anything else when you’re great at killing people in 1v1 point defense)
