Improvements to Core, Druid, Pets?

in Ranger

Durzlla.6295

Why does everyone keep saying Druid is clunky?

But as for core ranger it’s actually not in too bad of a spot, it can still fill any role, the only one it does better than others though is condi.

I’m hoping our power builds will get some love, and some of our useless/boring traits will get changed, and maybe, just maybe, our spirits will get an update to be less boring.

Chances for a true shapeshifter? (Soulbeast)

As much as I would LOVE a true shapeshifter, it’ll probably never happen because it goes against the lore of GW2.

In Lore only Norn are supposed to shapeshift, but that might get retconned due to heart events etc

I could see them adding Rifle to ranger and making the especs theme about wielding nature magic and a little technology together, make it’s more something around the line of Charr Rangers that needed to come back to defend their towns from X threats turned to tech to give them the extra oomph they needed without giving up their deeply grown roots in nature.

I’m ok with auras having a larger radius of share than stances tbh because auras require you to be smacked in the face or shot to do anything, where our stance effects do not.

That being said if I try the stances and they feel awful with that small range of sharing I will demand 600 like others.

kittenty band aid fix to the kittenty gimmick they are forcing with this kittenty spec.

Third Column of Major Traits-

1. Infinite Horizon
When you gain Mirage Cloak, the trait is also applied to all of your illusions.

Wait so to use the kittenty gimmick that they are trying to sell this kitten spec with you need to chose a specific GM trait that competes with the only dps focused trait in the line?

It looks like the Infinite Horizon just adds the evadeframes from hitting dodge to your clones, not that they don’t ambush, but I’m not sure…

Man, you are just asking for more power creep by drawing in those comparisons. It’s a mix of offense and defense, while Signet of Agility is completely defensive.

Except for the 180 precision as a passive effect though? Though you are right, it removing 15 conditions is also defensive.

How is it power creep to ask that a stance for an eSpec when combined with a GM trait is at least as good as a vanilla signet?

Well, elite specs aren’t meant to be upgrades, so that “for an elite spec” thing is irrelevant, but signet of agility has the same radius as griffin stance, and only in the rarest of circumstances are people going to actually benefit from the full 100 endurance gain. Not to mention it doesn’t incentivize them to dodge to gain might, and it doesn’t make them gain might on EVADES, that means if you were to pop your dog of agility and then pistol whip in a fire field you’re gaining 100 endurance, cleansing 3 condo and losing 180 precision, where if it were griffin stance you’d be gaining might on all the evade procs, regening at 100%, but will still be on fire.

Well, I still want a ‘hunter’ rifle-based spec at some point, but this spec looks fun to play, main-hand dagger always looks cool, and it actually synergises with pets, unlike our current cosmic healer spec… Looking forward to it.

Deadeye.

I’ll give it a go for sure, just as I tried rifle warrior and engie, but they never quite feel right. I miss the pet and the rest of our toys.

But neither rifle nor pistol fit the ranger theme in GW2. It’s all about nature and those two are the complete opposite. I don’t see this happen in the near future.

That’s so narrow-minded. Rifles have for a long time been the companion of the outdoorsman and explorer. American longhunters used hunting rifles, and they were very much nature guys. If the problem is that rifles are manufactured, then we shouldn’t be able to use swords or any other forged blades either. A GW2 Ranger with a rifle can be whatever you allow it to be, you just need to be a bit creative. The whole idea that rangers can only ever be themed around spirits and entangling roots just anchors the whole concept into a druid template, but we already have a druid spec.

Souldbeast is a cool concept though, and dagger makes sense as substituting a claw or fang, very bestial.

No, the thematic of ranger in GW2 (as stated by the devs around launch) was that as tech was showing up and thieves and warriors sorta embraced it and utilized it, rangers avoided it and instead turned to using more magic to augment them.

That being said, I highly doubt a rifle for ranger is out of the question via elite specs, is be amazed if we don’t get a rifle, or pistol, elite spec relatively soon that uses a lot of nature magic as well to show the distinction between ranger using a gun and everyone else.

Btw, for your outdoorsman argument, that doesn’t work as well when our world doesn’t have the option of them going and getting magic from nature itself so they don’t have to use technology, but still a good point.

New pets?

I don’t quite see the cheetah, could you point it out for me? :p Also I am really excited for the gazelle and the others seem to be good too!

It doesn’t look like a cheetah with its icon (which is why I am unsure if it is a cheetah) but that’s what the tool tip looked like to me. It’s located right next to the sand lion in the pet menu (it’s the purplish looking thing). If you watch the mouse overs, there is a fraction of a second where she hovers over the sand lion and cheetah tool tips as she’s moving the cursor down to the iboga and jacaranda. I don’t believe she realised they were new pets. It took me about 10 minutes of trying to freeze the video on the exact moment where the tool tip was visible (Youtube wasn’t helpful even at .25 speed).

There is footage of what I think is the cheetah in the announcement post-show. A ranger player attacks the golems with one for a few brief moments while the stream was showing off the weaver skills (https://youtu.be/FOr-LO38Mts?t=1h40m11s). That link should start you off just before the pet makes an appearance. It’s possible that might be the sand lion though.

Condi from Ranger doesn’t suffer the same problem as power attacks do of lower coefficents because of the Pet. That is why our Condi build is so much better.

So a small stat buff, the condis dagger seems to be able to stack and new pet skills should result in Condi being pretty good and making up for no pet. If power gets the same stat buff, say 150 power and 150 ferocity, then it definetly won’t make up for the lack of Pet, hopefully some of the pet merges add some pretty hard hitting power skills and maybe a power pet merge will give % increases instead.

I think it’s time they just give a raw buff to power weapons for ranger (sword at the very least). Power in general has fallen out of the meta but the strength of condi (which doesn’t suffer from the archaic scaling system of power with weapon skills) shows that a ranger with competitive DPS isn’t a problem for the meta. It also seems possible the soulbeast might actually buff the condi ranger build if the dagger skills are superior to axe and the trait line beats out the skirmishing or beast mastery ones.

Play any content with a glass power build on a ranger and compare it to a glass viper build to see how poorly balanced the state of power rangers is. I agree though, a raw stat buff from beast mode won’t change this. I’m actually concerned that because, if I understand it correctly, ranger weapon skills get less effective power from their stats compared to a class like the warrior, that throwing raw power at the ranger from absorbing a cat or a bird, it will actually be less effective than the pet itself was. I might not be understanding the state of stats and their interactions with skills, but I recall a discussion a while back saying that +1 power resulted in more damage on a warrior weapon skill than it did on a ranger one and it was theorized this was because ranger skills had lower stat scaling to account for the pet.

One thing to keep in mind though is that Soulbeast isn’t meant to be an upgrade but a variation, so there SHOULD be downsides to absorbing the pet, however it does seem like we’re going to gain a ton of utility from it, and in scenarios the pet is 100% worthless (I.E. sniping with a LB in wvW) even +1 power is more useful than the pet standing there idoly dying to AoE.

And last I checked our power ratios weren’t too far behind other professions, and seeing as how every weapon we have other than LB and GS are hybrid weapons I think ranger is going to abuse the new hybrid damage stat more than any other class will because we’re going to gain so much from it.

Also, I think our main power weapons are handicapped in ratio due to having a range of 1800 on one, and having a ridiculous amount of defense on the melee ones.

No, man. Take a look again at the stances. Leader of the Pack seems in-line. 100% duration and extended shared range is asking for more power creep – don’t.

Vulture Stance has a ½s interval, so affected allies can activate the effects of gaining might or poisoning foes up to 6 times combined. 100% duration is what is NOT needed with the current condition and boom spam, because that will only add towards it – that’s not good balance in the slightest.

All these stances provide something useful, especially Griffon Stance, which is a unique 100% endurance regeneration that will stack with profession endurance regeneration and vigor. Dodges are always useful.

Good god, it’s 100%? I can hear it already, “put the soulbeast in the mirage raid group so we can melt things.”

That scary thing Zalani posted were actually mesmers in GW1. It will be interesting to see what kind of skills they give it. Hopefully not just typical chomps, but something mesmery would be awesome…. interrupts, some sort of hex, boon removal, etc.

The stormseeds were air elementalists with incredible spike damage.

Both of those sound like potentially sidestepping the typical pet AI problems. Can’t casually walk away from a lightning strike like you can a porcine charging the wrong direction.

What I am worried about is that it seems like we are losing our importance as a support build for things like raids and fractals. The Ele and the guardian both look to be getting the ability to do damage as well as support.

Ele and guard have always been able to damage while support, Druids will never truly lose their role as support because they bring unique buffs to the raid (grace of the land, spotter, frost spirit, sun spirit, glyph of empowerment) so they’ll always be an option for increasing your groups damage more, as well has having great healing.

Granted if you go Soulbeast over Druid I doubt you’re going to be supporting in the first place.

Frost spirit offers might,it isn’t unique. Sun spirit offers burning to everyone, it also isn’t all that unique. The unique one are GOTL and Glyph of Empowerment. However if those are worse then say then new guardian specialty what is the point of the druid anymore?

Frost spirit isn’t brought for the might, it’s brought for its damage buff, and sun spirit gives your group burning stacks, which nice for a lot of condo builds.

All professions have mechanics.
Necromancer has shroud, Elementalist has attunements…etc
Ranger has pets. Like it or not that’s their mechanic.

Elite specilizations are supposed to improve on these mechanics, from what I understand.
Necromancer got an advanced shroud, Elementalists were now able to overload their attunements.
Rangers got Druid. A specialization that did nothing with our mechanic. It didn’t empower pets, it didn’t help pets, it didn’t interact with our pets what-so-ever.
While I love support, it was a huge disappointment how your pet played literally no role in your new found power.

And now? We get Soulbeast! Oh what a cool sounding name, it surely has some major influence on our pets?
Nope.
A specialization that LITERALLY takes our only mechanic away?
Not only that, but it renders many of our skills such as “Guard” and countless talents utterly useless…

While we still don’t know much about the capabilities of this new specializations its clear its a disappointment already.

Your idea of elite specializations is flawed, it’s not supposed to IMPROVE our mechanic, it is supposed to alter and change our mechanic, equipping an elite spec is SUPPOSED to be the equivalent of changing your class slightly, they’re supposed to be horizontal change I.E. not better or worse overall, just different.

Druid certainly achieved this, it wasn’t better, because taking Druid at all is a huge damage nerf, but you gained a ton of support.

This new spec though I’m unsure, it’s going to definitely have a lot of utility by absorbing your pet, but you also lose out on having the other body, which contrary to popular belief is a huge advantage in a lot of situations.

Idk why everyone’s acting like the elite spec fusing with pets will make them not fix pets when it’ll literally only be ONE SPEC that avoids using the pet, it’s not like ranger and Druid are going to be able to shelf their pet and pretend it’s not there just because soul beast can (and even then we don’t know how long or frequently)

Experience. You know, like how they fixed vanilla pets by not fixing them and adding new, more powerful ones instead. Even though pets hit more reliably now, HoT pets are still tops in most scenarios, pigs are still not worth using because of their clunky special, and they will likely continue the trend of bandaid-ing the problems by throwing in more new pets instead of fixes.

Also, did they finally fix drakes and the fact that they only auto-attack which they broke back in the beginning of the year? This last question is a legitimate one as I stepped away from the game these past months after attempting to slog through the horrifically bad Living Story.

I mean they have been fixing the old pets… so slowly… oh so very kittening slowly… so given their current speed I think in another xpac they’ll finally have most of the pets (except pigs because for some reason Anet hates them) working.

And as for the drake… I don’t know, it seems like the kitten things break every other patch, I’ve come to the conclusion that the code for the Drake pets are just intertwined with every other aspect of the game.

You do realize that the only enemies that have ever been immune to burning is the vanilla destroyers right? And even then none of the destroyer bosses are immune to burning so idk why that’s the part you’re freaking out about.

Its not only burning…its whole concept of Firebrand pretty much sucks. Someone said long casting times also, that nice negative thing for wvw and pvp too…..

I really hope it’s a toggle type deal that can last as long as you want, not like a 10 second thing with a cooldown or whatnot.

I mean I think it should have a Cd, but more like how our avatar state or pet swap works to restrict you from constant swapping.

That being said, idk if anything Anet does will dethrone Druid for me, but I am excited for the soul beast, really curious for how it’s playstyle will be, and how the fusion dance with my pets will work, because if I can get my hands and my healing power on that Harmonic Cry from moas…. oh ho boy

This is the build you’ll want to run most of the time btw, if healing not very necessary for your group (super experienced, almost no errors etc) then you may want to start transitioning into a more damage focused Druid build if you want to clear as fast as possible.

If you’re with pugs or inexperienced players the linked build will be better, and also wouldn’t be bad in a good group either.

Your healing in full zerker/assassins will suck, I’d recommend doing Magi armor for raids, since you don’t want to have any toughness in raids so the tank with barely more toughness than a zerker can hold aggro.

However if you’re ONLY doing fractals and other non raid related PvE content I’m pretty sure clerics would be better since power is better than just precision.

If you want the most “optimal” damage healer set up you’re going to want to sell some body parts and any kids you’ve got and pick up zealots for the minor damage increase it’ll bring you while you’re out of the avatar state.

Staff 2 is really strong in pvp ^^

Can you explain how? Hitting multiple targets in the first midfight with staff one seems way more efficient. You may start off with 2, but it’s still a very very forgettable skill. Reflects suck too.

Yeah, staff 2 is cool in name only, I wish the whisp did more, or like, did anything noticeable really…

Such as inflict burning?

I was gonna say amplify our auto attack when hitting a whisp target, but burning would be alright too.

I would prefer if the wisp either:
A) Healed and transferred conditions from touched allies to circled target.
or
B) Healed and transferred boons from circled target to touched allies.

I would literally kill someone for rangers to be able to interact with boons in any way, even a Destruction of the Empowered would be nice.

lolled at aleksander suburb’s post. I also had the feeling warrior was OP and got attention and finetuned a lot more than a ranger. I got that less since HoT.

agree to most of what’s already said, in PvE:

- make power druid/ranger more on par with condi druid/ranger
- make glyph of unity more viable
- dagger off hand more viable in pve, seems hard to come on par with torch in pve
- improvements to some pets would be nice, the tanky pets are hardly ever chosen in pve. I can’t see a solution here though.

A way to make the Tanky pets better would be to give them either some CC or Support imo, cause wyverns are tanky yet the Lightning one is taken, A LOT because it has the ability to absolutely demolish a breakbar

While they love throwing in buffs for core skills, I still don’t know what the hell Staff 2 is supposed to be. Also elite glyph sucks since beta…

what would be cool is if the elite glyphs made all damage/healing done to you procs the effect for the others attached (how it is now) AND if one of the people linked takes damage/healing it procs the effect too.

IE if I link 5 mobs any time one of the 5 mobs, or I, take damage from a source other than the glyph than it procs the damage tick from the glyph

Hence, “Quickening Screech” before it was altered to swiftness. Would be nice if they reverted it back to the original concept.

I, too, remember being able to tame a Golden Moa, back before launch – it’s F2 granted vigor. Would have been a neat Moa to have.

It was not only the best looking Moa imo, but it also gave vigor and swiftness in a fairly large radius, and it was originally one of the starting choices for humans (replaced the cat). Was very upset when they removed it.

Next weapon should be a Hammer and Stances….. its “Tradition”.

I will also accept physical skills in place of stances for the bunny thumper
