Musings of a new Warrior

We want the Warrior to be capable of good melee damage in a sturdy body. They can still do some decent damage at range, but they aren’t as good at it as the Ranger (with their pet). They have a hard time taking enemy boons down, and instead, have to just go through them with raw force. They may have a hard time with enemy conditions, and may need to ask for ally help in order to keep themselves free of hampering conditions.

Warriors, as stated by developers are meant for group work. If you are trying to play warrior solo it will not work as well. Yes the LoD hammer build requires other classes to support or “babysit” them, but that is team dynamics. WvW is not about the individual but about groups. Whether you are working with a zerg or with a party, the group aspect is the key. I know that is not viable for everyone and disliked by some, if you are one of these people look at playing a more solo class.

Actually I personally play axe/mace or axe shield and do fine. Hammer build is just one example where warrior shines.

If you are trying to WvW solo you should probably play a thief or maybe a shatter mesmer. Classes excel differently in different areas of WvW. It’s one of those things and find the niche where you can play the class you want to play or find a class to fill the niche you want. Don’t complain when your soup spoon isn’t a better shovel when you try to dig a hole with it.

In SPvP I wouldn’t play a warrior, in WvW its still one of my favorite classes to play. If you are finding you are having a hard time revise how you play.

Yeah ditch on my mark. I would say go with endure pain as it doubles as a stun breaker just in case, nothing is worse in PvE than complete stun lock while surrounded, as well as it being a good oh **** moment button (fear me is more a PvP skill in my mind and doesn’t do as well in PvE). Also maybe picking up signet of stamina instead of might, more dodging while running glass cannon is helpful at higher levels not to mention the condition removal.

On a side not your next skill points will do you really well in crit damage, as this will up your dps quite a bit I think. When I was a GS glass cannon I ran 20/30/0/0/20 and hit pretty dang hard.

how are engineers in wvw? I want to roll one.

in Engineer

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

I would say the engineer is like icing in WvW. Alone you have to be good or being ate by fat people out of the jar (people with less than par skill level) to really stand out. You go with cake (zerg) with a flamethrower build, grenades, tank cat builds. Cinnamon buns (siege) goes well too with our skill set. You can go with doughnuts (havoc squads) and do fine as long as you are the right kind. You really add to a group and help make it better if you are playing right, but you need to work on making your niche and do it well. Also sometimes you are like icing on a bagel and don’t really belong to well, usually in PvE, but I find this pretty rare and enjoy playing and being with engis most of the time.

I would also say that some work on the class by the devs would be welcomed as turrets and meh and I would love if we could have 1 kit as a weapon slot to free up my utility bar more.

Fastest way to level a warrior?

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

If you have some gold, do crafting to get you a few levels. There are guides out there to quickly and cheaply get you 400 crafting. I maxed both artificer and cooking for maybe around 5g. Of course its bets to do this for 60+ as completing the 2 will make you level 80.

Up until level 40-60 the signet build is pretty solid but it falls apart after that. Honestly I did most of my leveling as a full glass cannon warrior with a great sword (power/precision/crit damage traits), I would recommend doing that if you can, otherwise try power/precision/vit or toughness with a great sword. Either way for getting things done fast great sword is easily the best open world PvE weapon.

Oh, you're an Ele? go away.

Dyroth.5063

My ele isn’t high enough to run dungeons yet but I do on my warrior and engineer. What I notice is it’s the pug groups. A lot of players are just bad and how they think is worse. I have seen parties that kicked if they thought you were using power/toughness/vit gear. All in all I have seen good class use from almost every class, and I have seen bad class use from every class. I say almost because I haven’t run into too many dungeon running rangers, and those that I have run into either did nothing special or were terrible. At the same time, if I was one of those horrible players making a party while assuming that everyone else is just as bad as I am, I would want most being warrior and guardian because these two classes are the hardest to screw up.

Tier Predictions in a Month

in WvW

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

I think we are headed for a decently long period of the Big 4. SoR, SoS, JQ, and BG will be fighting for T1 wins constantly. Currently I see 1st place a battle between JQ and SoS, unless BG has some magic up their sleeves. T2 is going to be one of the worst tiers to be in I’m afraid as the current loser from T1 beats up on the other two servers, coverage alone will be a nightmare for T2 red and blue slots. I see TC holding onto T2 for awhile, they fight pretty well and don’t have a completely desolate server unless this current match up kills that. My knowledge is pretty limited outside of that.

The one server I really do want to watch is Kaineng. For lower tiers they are a power house and a half and I think man to man they will give one of the best fights out there. Issue is as they climb population will be an issue, even if most are WvW players the first real wall they hit can stop a climb if people get discouraged or put off by not a blowout. I will say I expect T3 or T4 out of them right now as from what I read the WM coverage will be a huge asset up until T2, since off hour coverage is smaller.

By the way great thread. A very good pre/post football game show feel with very little trolling. Though now that I say that I’m afraid it will be gone.

Actually will help lower pop servers I think. You will no longer have to consider if your server is viable for PvE as any server can guest on another.

As for lists, I more see a list being made of top PvE servers. I would love if two or three servers were named unofficial PvE servers of the game.

Don't nerf AoE

Dyroth.5063

Issue with buffing damage in anything but PvE, you make classes with less survivablity less plausible. Also don’t forget that many of the player claims of classes being OP deal with single target classes. Imagine thieves and warriors doing more damage than they do now. Buffing is not always the option.

I agree that scaling an AoE damage vs the number affected is probably the best way to go about this. In return AoEs should be allowed to hit slightly more targets.

Now my question for you is, wouldn’t your dps be possibly higher if you went to a 20/30/20 split in the same trees? My logic is the higher crit chance would capitalize more on the crit damage, especially if you go and get divinity runes.

I think that the game is disheartening

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dyroth.5063

Never felt any of the costs were over the top ridiculous. My general game play usually leaves me ahead as far as coin goes at the end of the day. Of course I npc all but crafting mats and salvageables, if I want to be cheap I use way points smartly, and I don’t die to terrible often and when I do I try to wait until the first broke piece before repairs. You aren’t going to be rich without some extreme efforts and what is the game play most described is not an extreme effort. You will also never be broke if smart. I do not think removing way point costs is going to help anything as we are talking about very nominal fees, but it is a good game wide gold sink as it does cull down inflation to some extent, over all I think they are more beneficial then not.

So Here's The Plan ;)

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

If I had to do an extreme tanky ranged build maybe this: http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-so-70;9;9;7J-JT-21;217-39Bu

Nothing I would want to use. No synergy I feel between using both ranged weapons if that is indeed your plan. Now if you want to use bow and hammer, you can get some trait synergy going and be a very support based character.

I do agree with the others though, its best to learn a play style you like and then branch out from there. You will at the very least see the ups and downs of each weapon combination in different scenarios.

Burst Trait % needs changed.

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

Kind of balanced as is actually. Sure 3% at max sucks but the real boost is the crit damage of the trait line. That already gives a huge boost to a warrior with decent crit chance as burst skills do crit. Play around with eviscerate and watch when you crit, more damage isn’t really an issue. Compared to other classes the small damage boost we get is really great when most get cool down reductions in the same slot. Before you complain about how some classes have it easier with crit damage and precision in the same trait line or whatever, remember how little warriors give up when they go full class cannon build as we have high toughness and vitality already.

As for why we don’t need a cool down reduction on our skills is the cool down is more based off from adrenaline gain and there are other traits that reduce the cool downs of burst skills and a lot of skills that grant adrenaline. Not to mention how over powered it would be for some burst skills to be spammed near infinitely.

Let's fix the rifle

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

Another obvious issue is the lack of damage from rifle attacks. The rifle just doesn’t hit hard enough to justify taking it over a melee weapon.

Hmm, can melee weapons effectively kill things at 1200 range now?

Melee weapons can effectively kill things. Period. rifle is inefficient in that regard right now.

Anyway, another possible fix would be turning the auto-attack into a chained attack like melee weapons, with the third having a short cast time but hitting like a truck.

Don’t get me wrong. Rifle is the only reason I play warrior, which is why I’d like to see it become more effective in tPvP. Right now, the only viable warrior in tPvP is the GS variety.

Look up the kill shot videos where a guy hits a target for 30k, yeah really weak there. Granted ideal conditions do make a huge difference, still the riffle is a very deadly weapon on its own. Also I can already tell that your experience is limited by you listing GS as the best weapon for PvP. Most people who know the class know that GS while high in mobility is a very one trick pony and not great for PvP just because how predictable it is and how it most be set up to be of any real use.

Greatsword Wars 2?

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

Warriors really need to realize offhand Axe is really bad. Axe/Mace for more DPS, Axe/Shield for DPS with a touch of tanking, or Mace/Shield for tanking.

That being said, those 3 combinations are better than GS

I agree, dual axes can be pretty bad. Whirling axes is really a bad skill to use against anything that is not scared to take a few hits or smart enough to move out of the way. Used to love seeing blender warriors when I played great sword just because I was tanky enough to stand there take the hits and kill them with hundred blades. Now I run axe and shield with warhorn/longbow/rifle second set, and I am way better off in WvW than I was with a great sword. So much easier to set up kills with the shield.

How Do You Kill As A 0/0/30/30/10?

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

You chose a super tank build maxing both vit and toughness, using very defensive and control orientated weapons, you lose the ability to be a killer. Your build should be all about flinging opponents around and keeping them stunned, while your dps friends do all the damage. If you want to be a killer change your build to something that is more offensive.

I believe so. I have used the fine transmutation stones to transfer looks, stats, and runes, all singularly and see no reason why it would matter if you transfer the skin you want through multiple pieces.

Warrior Wars 2.

Warrior is going to continue to be buffed guy. They really aren’t that good outside of PvE but it seems like a lot of people don’t understand that because they don’t play it and complain. Likely the same people who complain warriors roll their faces on the keys they’re so easy probably play ranger and practically afk at 1200 range because their best dps is an autoattack

This is pretty accurate I feel.

Almost always the big complaint about warriors is the hundred blades trick. Really hundred blades works best on two groups, newbs/noobs and those not paying attention. Otherwise its a simple combo to get out of, stun break then dodge. Before people start complaining “I shouldn’t have to have a stun break on to pvp”, the answer is yes you do unless you want combos such as this to be effective and warriors aren’t the only class that stun breaks help against.

For PvE, yes warriors are pretty good, and they do shine a lot while in a party that supports it but so does any damage dealing build. That is kind of the point of being a support role, help give those that are dealing damage function better. The only big difference is warriors have more room for error due to the high toughness and hp. Yes warriors are an easy class to start with, no deep mechanics are used, but this also means they are kind of bland at higher skill levels.

Finally I’m sick of this x class is op bs that keeps appearing over and over. So far my list includes mesmers, thieves, warriors, and guardians regularly, and occasionally elementalists, and rangers. Sounds like most the game is kind of balanced and that its mostly petty people who get beat by one class constantly or haven’t learned theirs enough yet. Yes some tweaks need to be made for balance, but give it all up already.

Excellent article on Horizontal progression

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

I would like to make just one comment here. Yes ascended gear is vertical progression, and yes it is very grind-y at the moment. This does not make it a gear treadmill. A gear treadmill is usually the forced progression of gear in order to proceed to the next one. Once you start seeing people look for party members with x amount of hp or y amount of toughness in order to be considered for a party, then we have a gear treadmill. Stat requirements essentially, are the true tell tale of a gear treadmill, and right now its not in the game. Note this does not include being level 80 and geared as such (vs being 80 and using level 10 gear).

Help me understand the longbow

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

Depends on here you use it. In PvE and dungeons, bow falls horridly short and the rifle is by far the superior weapon to use. in PvP it all depends on your style. In WvW I love it. Arcing shot is great while attacking towers and the like as it does heavy damage to anyone and anything in the AoE range. The burst skill does wonders for keeping people out of an area and making them less likely to advance. The multi-shot burn is good for shooting into crowds and I do actually bull charge some people and kill them with it as well. Immobilize is a great way to set up a combo for some real damage from better weapons, and do to the fact you are already closer range than the rifle, its an easier switch.

As for the slow movement speed of the shots, I like it. It almost forces people to dodge everything. I’m sure you know that people have limited endurance so after dodging the bow twice I’m essentially free to destroy them with the great sword.

How do I help my team in dungeons?

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

Passives and what not have to come from your own taste and play style to best decide what will help you the most.

For utility skills, you are going to have to drop most the signets, they just don’t do enough. When doing most dungeons I focus a lot on condition removal, so mending and shake it off are on my bar. I personally put for great justice on too, but this could easily be replaced for a different shout or banner. My elite skill varies depending on where I am, sometimes I have signet of rage for nothing more than the quickness buff, other times I use war banner for its damage potential and the rezing downed allies.

For behavior in dungeons, make sure you are using your shouts/banners frequently to keep the party buffed up when fighting. If using shake it off keep an eye on allies to see if any are about to die from conditions, otherwise I find generally if I have a condition on me, one other person does too. Finally work with the party for damage. Call out targets or jump on called out targets so your damage is being use productively.

Warrior Trait Attribute Bonus

in Warrior

Posted by: Dyroth.5063

Dyroth.5063

So I’m either missing your point or you are flat out wrong. Crit damage and burst damage are two separate things. By putting 20 points in discipline I get 20% extra crit damage and 2% extra burst damage. They are separate stacks. Burst skills will do more damage as you increase power and crit damage in general, now on top of that you are giving them added damage from the trait line.

Essentially if at 20 points in the trait and you have a burst skill (skill activated via f1) that does 100 damage, you will now do 102 damage base for that skill. Now if you crit that is extra damage added on top of that. This means you get more damage from the discipline trait, over just stacking it on the side.

A few questions about 100% map completion

If you are looking at just the immobilize of the sword, you are missing the whole nature of the single sword. Your build would be better with just utility skills and a bow. Personally focusing on being ranged as a warrior to me is a waste.
