The last two statements from Chris Cleary in the “please a clear statement re AFK farming…” thread are clear on the subject. If you read nothing else, please read them:

I’ll pitch in on this thread, as there seems to be some confusion about this situation.

The auto-cast feature was never intended to be used as an AFK farming mechanism, and usage of the auto-cast feature while AFK is fine as long as it is not used to facilitate unattended gameplay.

Mastery auto-loot also stopping players from being flagged afk seems like a bug instead of a feature, and I’ll be sure to bring it up today while we have a chat about this internally.

1) Using skill (1 or more) while AFK
2) AFKing in a place where it is beneficial for your character to be at
3) Unresponsive to interaction with GMs

If all 3 of these apply to what you are doing, you may get actioned for it.

I would rather us fix the underlying issue with this rather than band-aid the issue by enforcing rules and punishments that don’t solve the issue at all.

The core issue here is we don’t want to have players feeling that their main source of income is generated while they are not at the computer. We have already started to see the impact of this in-game and within the community. Not only does this behavior impact players in the world when they run across a pack of unattended farmers, but also the players who are performing the unattended farming. Eventually these players spend less and less time actually playing the game, and more time unattended farming.

We see the same trends in players that use bots, macros and cheats. It eventually leads to players falling out of the game (from both encountering the impact in the world, or by participating themselves).

While there is an economic impact of having a large number of players farming like this, I’m more more concerned about behavior trends shifting than anything else.

The 3 rules above aren’t just for your protection, they are for everyone’s protection. GMs have been trained to identify and handle these situations, it’s one of the first things they learn. GMs are overly generous on the amount of time that players are given to respond.

As for how we intend on fixing that, some of us had a meeting today to talk about that. While there are some systems working against each other here, we all agreed that we didn’t want to make any changes that anyone would actually run into unless they were no longer at their keyboard for an extended period.

Rest assured, we aren’t going to take away auto-loot in the world, or remove your ability to auto-cast. Everything we implement will only impact players who aren’t actually performing actions. I’m sure when we do implement something, it’ll be in the patch notes to read about. Until then, follow the 3 rules above. After that, they won’t be relevant anymore.

(Automation is still against the rules, unless you are using it to play music in-game)

Gold find?

While it is a source of income, the gold it brings in and contributes to inflation is offset by other things. For example, one person leaving the game and the gold now sitting in that account wipes out a lot of gold from gold find from many accounts (and we all know of lots of accounts that have stopped playing).

All gold coming in everywhere gets offset by other things like gold sinks… so I think I’m missing your point again, I’m sorry.

I also feel like I’m having 2 different conversations about GF and they’re getting intermingled. The first is GF’s affect on the economy and inflation… while it’s not a driving force of inflation (I agree with you), I think that it’s too easily dismissed/ignored as a source of gold generation and an influence… I think more comes in via this method than is perceived… but this would require more testing, and the best I could do is n=1 which isn’t very helpful.

The second is GF as a worthwhile infusion to slot. I don’t think I have much more to say on my views of this without becoming redundant, but who knows what future posts will inspire!

~EW

edit: does anyone else have the tinfoil hat on that I do that the inflation might be intentional to pad the possible upcoming LW3 and 2nd expansion gold sinks?

It adds up over time, though. I kill mobs everywhere I go, no matter what I’m doing… but I’m not necessarily doing dailies every day, or meta events. And when I’m doing them I’m still killing some mobs while getting to them.

If getting gold is your goal, then pretty much anything is better than killing mobs. Dungeon paths take 15 minutes and give 1 gold. If you do kill mobs, then killing them +0.5% faster with damage infusion is better than gold find infusion because the money is not in the gold they drop.

Gold find is Anet’s noob trap.

Killing mobs for gold is not my goal. It’s a side effect of what happens while I do other things in the game… nearly everything I do in the game. So, it’s not unimportant even if it’s not a primary focus or source of income.

What's with these gem rates?...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

I’m happy with it. It’s the first time I’ve ever felt it was worth buying gold with my gems.

It’ll swing back eventually, and those who enjoy the exchange to buy gems will be happy… then at some point it’ll swing back the other way for those willing/wanting to buy gold.

I doubt ANet will intervene in the way the OP (and others) might wish, just ’cause a good gems-to-gold rate (and consequently a historically bad gold-to-gems rate) means people will be more willing to open up their wallets to buy gems with RL cash. Businesses like income.

I agree that it generates income, but the post I was responding to was saying that’s it is something that ANet has currently put in the game (as in a new feature) and saying that this is cause of current inflation. I was arguing that the amount from the drops is insufficient to cause inflation, especially as compared to the new 2 gold dailies, and a feature that’s been in game from a long time isn’t what I’d be looking at as a driver for current inflation.

My apologies for any misunderstandings I had.

Yah it does add up over time, but the amount you get per kill is small and then it’s a percent of that. The guy above killed 200 inquest to get maybe 17 silver and I suspect he has high gold find to get that much, most people have only a few % gold find.

I feel it’s too easy to dismiss some of the smaller means by which we generate income. I remember recently watching a youtube vid of someone opening a mass of black-lion chests… He, of course, checked the prices of the stuff he got to the AH, and I distinctly remember him dismissively saying, “oh, that’s only a gold, oh well.” In my mind I was screaming, “that’s WORTH a gold!”

I also don’t know the means by which the guy above tracked his income/kills…. and, did he take into account the diminishing returns that occurs when an area is farmed? This is the big factor that makes me skeptical of his test. Had he roamed the entire map instead, I’d be more inclined to accept his results – even hyenas and drakes drop silver.

I’ve got nothing less anecdotal, but my experiences are the opposite; I think if I’m focused on killing mobs I get more than 17s/200 kills… but that’s just speculation. Perhaps in the near future I ought to do my own little experiment to verify/disprove my current view and rationale for the 20% gold find infusion.

So many things on the “to do” list, lol.

edit:

MF boost, if killing a lot of loot-bearing foes (Orrian temples, HoT non-meta, karka farm, …). I’d rather receive one more exotic per month than the half the equivalent in extra gold; it’s just more fun to see ‘better’ drops.

The thing is you never know what items or how many items you got from that drop are due to your MF infusion… where as every time coin is dropped by a mob, you can calculate how much more you got due to your GF infusion, than you would have. I don’t have RNG trust issues like some people have (and posted about), but given the choice I prefer to see definitive evidence that my infusion choice had an effect on the outcome of my gameplay.

Currently presented? Its been there since those achievement rewards were put in the game way back then. However it only affects mob drops, those few copper to a silver or two that you get sometimes when you kill something. Compared to the 2 gold a day for the daily, it’s not much.

Since they are in the achievement containers, I consider them a reward to vets for playing and staying. Not a bad thing imo.

It adds up over time, though. I kill mobs everywhere I go, no matter what I’m doing… but I’m not necessarily doing dailies every day, or meta events. And when I’m doing them I’m still killing some mobs while getting to them.

This is why I slot the 20% gold find utility infusion over the others… ‘cause no matter what I’m doing I’m always killing mobs, most of which have the potential of dropping cash, and it’s frequent enough that I think it’s worth it.

Buff/QoL changes for Rifle maby?...

in Warrior

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

I get that having rifle pierce would be awesome, but I also agree that as it stands now w/ only two skills piercing (volley and kill-shot) is fine.

My reasoning for keeping it the same is due to what it currently provides that hasn’t been discussed directly yet… when traited the Rifle gives a lot of adrenaline at range. The AA alone gives 3 per shot (trait + vuln), and when berserking I fill my adrenaline bar much faster than my traited gunflame can recharge. It’s certainly WAY faster than the bow.

Since the rifle is about “burst and volley,” if I miss my gunflame burst, I’ve got it ready to go again within the ~3 sec recharge. If I don’t want to use a second (or third, or fourth) gunflame, I can use two AAs then swap to my off-hand, and unload another burst… again, in under 3 sec.

So, the option being asked for is to revert Cracked Shot back to piercing instead of extra adrenaline (‘cause both is obviously OP)….
…my preference is to keep the adrenaline. I get piercing w/ Volley (and if I’m not berzerking Kill Shot), and a quickly filled adrenaline bar in and out of berserk. Yeah, I’m honestly really good with that.

(this is from a PvEer’s standpoint, of course)

Gamers are gunna game the game. As a player, it’s your call as to what limits you’re willing to put on yourself as to how far you’re willing to go; as to what is an acceptable amount.

I think it’s in general a bad idea to implement and police restrictions unless the health of the game and economy is at stake. I’m confident ANet will make changes when this is the case. I don’t feel this is one of those situations.

“Play how you want,” extends to playing within the spirit of the game as you see it. ANet provides overarching guidelines and intentions that we all must play within, sure, but that just help us to have some commonality within how we perceive that spirit (and a framework to keep the game healthy).

Dailies no longer geared towards casuals?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

  1. Should dailies be geared towards loyal players who are able to devote no more than 90 minutes per day? These are folks who play every day, but are limited by RL considerations so don’t have the same in-game resources as others.

Dailies are geared to coax all players to log into the game, regardless of time constraints and their wide varying interests. I don’t see why that’d change, and I don’t see how it’d be good to reduce the appeal to a smaller portion of the entire player base. Its intention is to keep players from walking away from the game for long swathes of time, or even for good… even a player logging in for only 2-30 minutes a day is a victory for ANet.

Dailies, I think, serve their function mostly pretty well.

I do fewer dailies than I did before, but when I do all 3 in a day I get 2 gold. So, it balances out enough for me.

~EW

But why do you do fewer? Less time? Less interest? Without that detail there’s no telling if you’re having issues with the dailies or not, to answer the OP’s question.

Less interest… I’ve never been a huge fan of the “do events in X map” unless I could incorporate world boss events and pre’s into it. I just don’t enjoy a crowded map full of people doing non-meta (or non-boss) dailies. And JPs I could take or leave… I find them stressful as often as I find them interesting. Both of those are almost always on the PvE dailies together. I miss the World Bosses…

Regardless, I can take or leave dailies… I felt that way before the changes, and I feel that way now. I don’t feel the 2g makes a difference in my intentions to do them, it’s just a nice bonus to get when I do complete 3.

~EW

P.S. Even though I’ve dabbled in WvW, and will probably do so again in the future… I’m largely a carebear. So take my words with that grain of salt in mind.

Ascended Jewelry crafting please

EphemeralWallaby.7643

If there were stats I could get crafting them that I couldn’t get from the laurel vendor….

…then me.

~EW

To add on to the issue he’s bringing up, I think it’s more that the current ascended trinkets are either extremely difficult to get (4-stat combos) or are extremely easy to get (everything else). Every piece of ascended jewelry besides some specific stat combinations is already available for a cheap price. Even the accessories and amulet that cost laurels+ectos+badges are extremely cheap compared to what they would be from ascended jewelry crafting due to the price of amalgamated gemstones. Sure people would craft the otherwise unobtainable combinations, but 90% of the items would rarely if ever be crafted. So it wouldn’t really make sense unless there was a complete overhaul to the ascended jewelry system, likely including a severe reduction in fotm ascended jewelry drops so that crafting base game stat combos is actually relevant.

So why make a whole ascended jewelry system just for the HoT (and a couple other) stat combos? Is there something wrong with just adding them to LW achievements? For a lot of players that would be more accessible than making them cost 50g+ apiece anyway.

I’m not saying there should never be level 500 jeweler, but with the current system it wouldn’t really make sense, and ending the current system would likely be extremely unpopular.

I never made any claims to the feasibility of implementation, popularity of it, or the affect of it on the economy as a whole. I just answered his question: That I’d make at least one.

Make a bunch of jewelry, then use salvage kits. The higher the salvage kit, the more jewels you get back that you can then turn into more jewelry (made cheaper now) to once again salvage. I usually start with making 20-30 earrings, and because of the return on jewels by the time I run out of my initial jewel investment I’ve gone through 600+ ore and gained a ton of essences of luck.

…snip… unless you are making a legendary that specifically requires jeweler, they have made jeweler worthless as a profession.

For me that’s not entirely true. I find a lot of use in it for making exotic accessories because the minor stat difference between them and ascended aren’t ever going to be worth the 50 ectos and 40 laurels. True, you can buy most of the exotics for relatively cheap; but if I’ve got the mats at hand then free is an even better price.

Also, I find jeweler useful for farming Essence of Luck. I haven’t yet maxed out my MF, so when my bank gets too full of silver or mithril it gets converted into Essence of Luck and usually a ding from Agent of Entropy.

Material Acquisition Balance

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

The elevated prices for lower level mats therefore must indicate a supply shortage, otherwise why would people be willing to pay those kinds of prices for something they could go get themselves?

Oh, that’s an easy question. Because this is a game of entertainment, and people will in general gravitate towards doing the things that are the most interesting and entertaining to them. Farming low lvl mobs/areas is generally less interesting, and thus less sustainable, than adventuring in lvl 80 areas. Added to that the amount of money that can be made in other more interesting (to them) areas, and it means that many people are willing just to pay those prices than go out and farm for low-tier mats.

Material gathering is a cost/benefit analysis each person must make. And everyone has a profit level that they’re willing to sacrifice some entertainment to achieve. The economy balances itself out…. but that balance doesn’t mean everyone is going to want/like the prices required of them.

Farming comes in different forms, not just the axe-to-tree form. You pick the method that’s most sustainable to you, sell ‘em, and from the profits you buy what you want. That’s how it’s generally done in most MMOs.

I still take the fact that logs can for the most part sell for as much as cloth/leather, and logs are a different form of farming (and imo a more accessible one), that cloth/leather is just fine.

~EW

Material Acquisition Balance

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

Okay, let’s list the current methods for getting Cloth and Leather:

1) Random drop – available at all levels based on region, drop random
2) Salvage items – available at all levels based on region, drop random
3) Salvage equipment – Returns dependent on character level, drop random
4) Map rewards – Available in limited quantity based on map and rotation at all levels
5) Marketplace – Available at all levels at significant cost (ex – Just scraps 2 silver+ ea)
6) Refine at Mystic Forge – Only allows promotion of lower level to higher level mats, wasteful

The first two methods depend on luck, the third also depends on not outleveling the equipment drops for the material you need, which is ironic because by doing the crafting you outlevel the material you need. The fourth method is reliable if you can find a map on the right rotation spot, but is limited in how much you can use it. The fifth is freakishly expensive for most applications. The last only allows promotion (which is almost never needed) and is horribly inefficient, being available only when you have a full 250 of the lower mat and yielding a very small amount of the new mat. None of these are particularly reliable or viable for any intentional resource gathering in quantity.

Materials of the same tier close in price on the TP at the time I’m typing this. Close is relative, you might disagree how much is considered close, so ymmv.

T1: Jute, Copper, Rawhide, Green Wood.
T2: Wool, Iron, Thin Leather, Soft Wood.
T3: Cotton, Seasoned Wood. Course Leather is roughly 1s more than these.
T4: Linen, Rugged Leather. Hard Wood is roughly 1s40c less than these.
T5: Thick Leather, Elder Wood Log. Silk is way less than both of these.

If you feel that farming cloth/leather is too inconvenient, time-consuming, or subject to RNG, then go farm trees… sell logs on the TP, and buy the cloth/leather you need.

Given that the TP prices reflect availability as much as demand, that list that tells me that there’s not as much of an availability/farming problem as you think… t4 being the closest to an exception.

Farming cloth scraps

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

For the chests you open them on a character of the appropriate level for the tier of cloth you want. T1 = lvl 1-20. T2 =lvl 16-35. T3 = lvl 31-50. T4 = lvl 44-63. T5 = lvl 58-80. Make sure to take note of the level overlaps and plan appropriately. The area you open them in doesn’t matter, only the level of your character… that’s what determines the level of the loot you get that can be salvaged.

Farming humanoid mobs will yield you the salvage-specific rags you can salvage for cloth. Rags will always be the tier related to the level of the mob. However, armor etc that you loot will be a mix of your character’s level or that of the mob/area.

Don’t forget that the quality of the salvage kit you use will determine the odds of you getting a higher tier mat than you normally would.

Map bonuses are not a terribly reliable way to gather those items as they are few and far between. They seemed geared more towards passive generation than actual farming.

But it is a means that helps increase leather/cloth accumulation, and has been increased/adjusted in various patches… along side of map-completion rewards. I recall ANet saying they’re watching the cloth/leather production rate and making adjustments as appropriate… though I don’t know where that post disappeared into the depths of forums.

Material Acquisition Balance

When you kill mobs in lower lvl areas, they drop lewt at your level AND at the level of the area. Salvagable hides, rags and whatnot are always of the level of the mob… I feel your claim that it’s not a viable means is untrue.

Map bonuses are a means for getting cloth/leather. And, by doing the events that get you those map bonuses, you get karma which allows you to buy gear you can put in the Mystic Toilet and salvage the results.

I’ve found that I get a lot of things that can salvage into cloth/leather when I’m killing the things that drop it; even the lower lvl stuff when being higher lvl. It’s anecdotal, I know, but it does feel like ANet increased the drop rate. I think I get a roughly equal amount of leathers and cloths to the ore/plants/wood I farm when I take the time to kill the mobs along the way. But, again, I realize that’s anecdotal.

I’m fine with not all resources needing to be gathered the same way. It mixes things up.

Warrior race?

in Warrior

EphemeralWallaby.7643

Human has access to Reaper of Grenth. I know racial skills aren’t great, but I got a lot of use out of it as a wvw zerg busting skill back when warriors had few decent elites. With today’s meta condi builds, this skill may provide some extra condi pressure and it does effect up to 10 targets with 2 condis that warriors have little access to: poison and chill.

Check it out.

The Asura’s Radiation Field seems like it’d give you a similar function…. with a lower CD, and it’s a Utility instead of Elite. Main drawback would be it’s a static field instead of moving with you.

How do I extract a Black Refractor

I’ve got a black refractor in my back piece, I tried using the upgrade extractor from the gem store for 250 gems and it won’t let me extract it; am I just SOL?

Did you put in a support ticket? You might be able to get a refund on your gems if you do it quick enough.

The question really should be: how much of a hit and what percentage of players should be hit by negatives of systems designed to catch and punish rule breakers?

The general answer to that is easy: By however much that allows ANet to retain the most income.

If they do nothing, they lose income. If they’re too heavy handed they lose income. They gotta find the optimum spot somewhere between the two… and it will be likely where they can retain the most income.

The ideal situation is what Chris stated: "Everything we implement will only impact players who aren’t actually performing actions.” Time will tell if it happens. I’m hoping it does.

Few questions from new guy

EphemeralWallaby.7643

Hello everyone, gotta few questions about few things hope ill get my answers since im gonna start playing the game soon

Welcome!

- when i logged in i got an item that allows me to level a character to 80, of course i will not be using this item yet, need to learn how to play 1st and see t he game content.
Question is on what class would it be usefull to use later on i guess something thats hard to level up but a usefull class and does the item stay with me till i dont use it, it probably will but just to be sure.

The lvl 80 boost can be used as a trial on multiple characters simultaneously. When you decide to make it permanent on one character, all your other characters that are trying it out will revert to their original level. So, you can try all the classes to get an idea of what they’re like at lvl 80. ANet published a video about how the lvl 80 boost works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IbMbGG1lOU

edit: and yes, the boost item will stay with you until you make it permanent on one character. No worries.

Im starting as a necromancer since i wanted to try something new in mmo, usually i played warriors and tanks, is it a good idea for a first character.

Necromancers are a good profession to learn the game. They have a larger than usual health pool and a wide variety of viable builds in all the game modes. Also their profession mechanic ( f1 ability ) is very accessible to learn.

Last i wanna are there things that im limited with that i wanna keep my eye out for like a certain specialization or something, i didnt read everything about the game.

By level 80 you’ll have every skill and non-elite trait line unlocked. You can switch them around at your convenience out of combat. The only thing that you’d want to consider while you level is the stats you want on your armor, weapons, and trinkets that support your build and strategy. Most gear is relatively cheap throughout the game, even the good lvl 80 Exotic gear.

I recommend as early as you can to buy gathering tools from a merchant (mining pick, axe, and harvesting sickle), and gather resources as you adventure and level. It can be a really good source of initial income selling it on the Trading Post if you don’t want to start crafting.

I also recommend staying out of the profession sub-forums here until you’re comfortable and familiar with the given class.

You must be one of the few who would pick up a MMO game for story. Have you tried some single player games?

If this your honest opinion and not you trolling, then I pity you.

MMOs have to have a broad appeal in order to maintain a large player base. This means people playing the game for reasons different than yours. Also, you forgot the RPG part of MMORPG. RPG is as synonymous with narrative as it is with stat progression.

~EW

P.S. I love the narrative in this game and am eager for more, too.

Question about how healing works

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: EphemeralWallaby.7643

EphemeralWallaby.7643

If you give 5 sec of regen, and the other person then gives 2 seconds of regen, your regen will tick of its 5 seconds at your hp. And when it would expire, the other person’s kicks in for their 2 seconds worth based on their hp. The regen stacks in duration, meaning each new application queues behind the last one applied.

For your last question: From the wiki it states, “When applicable, the stats of the character that activated the finisher are used to calculate the combo effects.” http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combo

I hope that helps,
