No.
A single game mechanic makes the metagame boring and forces players into bunker setups with every team playing nearly identical builds and tactics. Introducing a variety of maps with a variety of maps would force players to become innovative and would diversify the meta immensely. Tl;dr bring on CTf, moba, and base defense, the game needs more variety!
Hell look at how interesting some of the non-conquest maps from the GW2 beta were? Where did those maps and those complicated mechanics go, and why were we saddled with 5 maps of boring conquest?
link
Sorry that was my bad, I meant alpha not beta. there were reports from GW1 PvPers who were asked to join the closed alpha that there were a variety of game types for sPvP during the closed alpha and I think a few of them even showed up at demos during conventions (but never in beta)
Q: What’re you planning on doing about the HGH Engi. you can’t look at this screen and deny that this stuff is OP. No class should be able to permanently maintain 20 stacks of might on itself.
i also want to add something else:
custom arenase won’t solve GW2 issues: game modes are not interesting enough.
You have your standard conquest map with secondary objectives ( be them the treb, NPCs killing or the orb), nothing really new.
Map/ objectives depth is very tiny, strategies are very simple due to the great semplification of the format and can be easily summarized into :
1. Bunker a point ( wait for back up)
2. Chaotic mid fight
3. Outnumbering
4. Fast roaming ( back up)Class diversity is focused around these very simple tasks, and really the deepest tactic you’ll ever find is a trap ranger putting traps on the treb/close or a mesmer porting back with its portal.
Basically, the game is too simple, altough with a steep learning curve due to its combat system.
This is what should be addressed, along with professions balance ( in some case a total rework is needed) in order to do accomplish it.
Agreed though custom arenas will provide a temporary bandaid if the ability to turn off specific points is extended to the ability to turn off ALL points. This would allow you to make very simplistic deathmatches and CTF. This won’t be a great solution since cap points are the primary mechanics and trying to force maps built for conquest into other game formats won’t be perfect.
tl;dr we need new, larger maps that mix many mechanics including but not limited to CTF, conquest, death match, and king of the hill.
Part of the mechanic (20% reduction in healing) was incorporated into poison in GW2 (33% reduction in healing). Other than that, a percentage reduction in maximum health isn’t as important a mechanic in GW2 because of the pacing of combat. GW2 is a much faster and more fluid in GW2 than GW1: group fights are usually decided in a few seconds and rarely last longer than a minute unless several bunkers are involved. DW was usually a pressure skill, it acted as a pressure on support and heal classes and was most effective at reducing heal output over a period of several minutes. Since fights are decided so much more quickly in GW2 the pressure mechanic of DW wouldn’t be as important and additional spike mechanics would be unnecessary.
hmmm i’ll be happy with more game modes for sPvP.
but if free for all death match or team death match is introduced, the respawn wait timer better be fast.and yes free for all death match seems exciting.
the newly respawned player could be in stealth for a few seconds or invulnerable etc.
Death match a la GW1 Random Arenas shouldn’t be your first guess at other game formats though! hop on the GW1 wiki and take a look at how complex and interesting the old GvG and HA game formats were. Hell look at how interesting some of the non-conquest maps from the GW2 beta were? Where did those maps and those complicated mechanics go, and why were we saddled with 5 maps of boring conquest?
At launch spectator will only be in real-time (or perhaps on a slight delay?) without a replay option. It won’t be like GW1 obs mode.
GW2 currently possesses one single game mechanic: cap point conquest. This promotes incredibly static builds and playstyles as a single player/team build excels at this mechanic. Tiny cap points cause boring bunker builds to dominate and prevent many viable builds that are more interesting and fun to play/watch from seeing the light of day.
GW1 PvP had massive build and playstyle diversity because of a vast variety of mechanics. GvG combined deathmatch with large maps, capture the flag, and base defense. The combination of mechanics forced players to play for more than one goal (unlike cap points) and allowed for massive build diversity as different players placed different value on different mechanics and goals. Hall of Heroes (the end goal of Heroes Ascent) had three possible maps chosen at random (king of the hill, conquest, and capture the flag) so team builds had to be prepared for any of those game formats and build accordingly. Some players might choose to build more heavily for a conquest style map while others might go for a king-of-the-hill focused team setup while still others would build to be able to handle any game format instead of trying to excel at a particular format.
I’m not as familiar with LoL and SC2 but afaik there is a similar diversity of mechanics: LoL has several different lanes with different goals and challenges, mechanics like jungling, and different champions who excel at particular formats and counter different mechanics.
As long as GW2 has only a single mechanic (conquest) that is dominated by a single strategy (bunkering) GW2 sPvP will be boring and will not grow into an esport. One single team setup (3-4 bunkers with 1-2 roamers) will continue to dominate and teams will continue to use identical teamsetups with identical tactics because that team build and those team tactics are ideally suited for the ONLY game mechanic in play. The game needs a diversity of mechanics and different build options for handling each of those mechanics or players will continue to abandon it in favor of more complicated games. Discuss.

Agreed. It’d also be nice to do something about ragers in tPvP. Having someone ragequit or simply not join my match shouldn’t wreck my leaderboard rank. 4v5 is a guaranteed loss.
Can’t have a competitive E-sport when the only game format is conquest. That’s why there’s no interest =\
That’s the entire point of a block list: to solve problems by separating you from people you can’t interact with.
Your notion of what a block list should do is unrealistic / wrong.
Enlighten me then. What’s the point of a block list if not to allow you to block players you don’t want to play with.
No?
Blocking only stops people you have chosen to dislike from communicating with you.
What would happen when you decide to block everyone except for the top 100 players?Your suggestion is flawed.
Block list has a cap. If someone is on my blocklist it’s because they’re either completely incompetent, incredibly obscene, or both. If they’re on that blocklist I shouldn’t have to play with them. That’s the entire point of a block list: to solve problems by separating you from people you can’t interact with.
Kind of absurd, the queuing system should be smart enough not to place you on the same team as someone on your block list. Hope for a dev response and quick fix, thanks.
Things that would break up the zerg.
1.) Remove AoE Cap.
2.) Limit rewards from events/kills. In PvE, shared rewards for events/kills are viable because of scaling. There is no scaling in WvW, and thus there shouldn’t be shared rewards. 100 people zerging through a supply camp shouldn’t be rewarded as much as one person solo’ing a supply camp. 10 players beating on one player shouldn’t be rewarded as much as 1v1 kills. Make it such that rewards are “shared” amongst a decent amount of players, but not excessively.
For example, a “normal event,” should reward up to 5 players, a “group event,” should reward up to 10 players, and a “zerg event,” should reward up to 25 players.
Basically “The numbers it should take to complete the event +5”
OR…
3.) Add scaling to WvW. The larger a zerg is, the stronger the keep/lord/whatever becomes. This means adding “time values,” to each WvW objective (A supply camp should take 2 minutes to cap, a tower 10 mins, a keep 30 mins etc.) and then scaling appropriately.
As #3 is not very viable, I would think the best changes are #1 and #2.
This plus collision detection (unlikely that it’ll ever make it ingame unfortunately) would fix most of the zerg vs zerg problems and make WvW LOADS more fun.
Brilliant! Thanks Devon.
As WvWer on Sancutm of Rall who live in downtown Boston outside of Kenmore Square, this is really outstanding. Thanks so much to everyone!

What gives Anet? Does this have to do with the maintenance at the end of last week? Or preparations for the free trial weekend? Either way it SUCKS and some kind of official word on why it’s happening and what’s being done would be GREAT
You can also purchase the earrings for ~40 laurels iirc
Symbol of the KITTENS? Dam you have some imagination, I can’t see even cats, let alone kittens…
I’m guessing that the acronym of the National Socialist German Workers Party triggers the forum’s profanity filter and that the original poster is suggesting that the Windmill symbol looks like a swastika
One suggestions would be to start sending out mail messages to players you believe to be inactive and ask them to respond with a few days or they will be removed from the guild, that’s what we do with our members. But I agree, I’d love to be able to see when my members last logged in!
Opening day at Fenway, let’s bring this post up so that I can get to the game!

Well choice of server doesn’t really matter for dungeons and you can guest for guild missions so I hope you’ll consider applying to Legion of Doom on Sanctum of Rall! Infodump:
Legion Of Doom [LOD] is an active, high-end PVE guild recruiting on Sanctum of Rall. We are a 7 year old community that played Guild Wars 1 together and has stayed together into Guild Wars 2. About 2 years ago in Guild Wars we were known as Club of a Thousand Pandas [LOD?]. We were proud to be a DOASC guild and hold several records in Guild Wars 1 not only for DOA but most elite areas as both Legion of Doom and Club of A Thousand Pandas.
We are a high-end “speed clear” guild looking to re-establish ourselves as the elite players of GW2. Being the best-of-the-best is a passion for us, and our focus is on obtaining the highest level of performance. Don’t be put off by that though, as much as we’re interested in being rockstars in runs goofing around and having fun are just as important. Casual trolling and messing around on TS are practically constant with us.
We do daily FOTM 20, 30, and 40 runs and there are usually dungeon groups being formed for popular runs like CoE and Arah. We always have people that are looking for faster and more efficient ways to do Dungeons. We run Guild Bounties twice a week and plan to start including Guild Rushes into our weekly schedule this week!
What we require is that you have at least 1 level 80 character geared in full exotics that can be used for Dungeons (builds + gearing standards will be explained if you are accepted). Additional character diversity is desirable and we really like to see professions that are particularly useful for group play (Elementalists, Guardians, Warriors, and Mesmers are top notch ^__^). We expect members to represent LOD and to participate in Guild activites. We have a Teamspeak server that we expect all members to use for guild runs.
If you are interested in joining LOD please PM an Officer and fill out the application on our forums (http://lodgw.com/). After reviewing your application our officers will bring you on a trial dungeon run before making a final decision. Hope to see you ingame!

Legion of Doom [LOD] is a 7-year old high-end PvE guild with strong roots in endgame on Sanctum of Rall. Back in GW1 we were very well known as a Domain of Anguish Speed Clear guild and hold ties for the all-time records for completion times for Domain of Anguish and Urgoz. In GW2 we’re based on the Sanctum of Rall server where our main goals are dungeon runs, level 30+ fractals, world events, and (starting this week) guild bounty missions! Right now we’re fairly small with ~35 active members but we’re looking to expand to our GW1 size of 100 active members! Guild buffs are up constantly, we have our own TS3 server and are a pretty fun bunch!
While many of our players are east coast, we have a bunch of west-coasters, euros, and even a few oceanic players as well, and there are definitely a ton of people up well into the night. If you’re interested stop by our forums (here) and fill out an application. Cheers!
