Your favorite thing you miss from GW?

Looking back, I think I miss Signet of Capture the most. I enjoyed hunting down specific skills in specific locations.

Skill points in GW2 are fun at first, but after a while they just start to feel like another thing I tick off the list for a map completion

Class ranking by fun!

From my limited experience solely in PvE with the classes I’ve played past level 30.

Mesmer (Shatter – level 71)
Thief (DD/SB – level 61)
Engineer (Rifle – Level 42)
Ranger ( LB/SB – level 35)
Elementalist ( S/D – level 72)

Those new Skills and Traits.....

Game needs more skill customization.
80 levels of the same 5-10 weapon skills, 4 of which are actually useful gets old fast.

Esquilax.3491

I find the crafting in this game to be highly convoluted and un-intuitive.

Let me attempt to explain… Say I need to level my tailoring through the “Linen phase”. I need to craft bolts of linen and leather squares in advance of crafting the equipment pieces. I have no idea how many equipment pieces I need to craft to reach the “Wool phase”. Refining bolts and squares only gives experience and crafting points for the first few levels of that profession, so I need to craft how many I will need in advance in order to maximize my efficiency. The problem is, I don’t know how many I need to craft.

I always end up in one of two situations:

1) I crafted too many bolts and squares, now they go to waste because they sell for much less than the pre-crafted materials price.

2) I crafted too few bolts and squares. In this situation I need to go back and craft more without gaining any experience, which basically means I could have leveled further than I am now and I will need to craft additional equipment (more wasted materials) to reach the next crafting phase.

I understand there are certain websites available to help maximise your efficiency, but for me alt-tabbing between the game and a website every minute or so really gets on my nerves.

What am I doing wrong? I would be very grateful for any advice.

Am I the only one really disappointed with the voice acting?

I loved most of the voice acting. In particular Zojja and Tybalt. Their voices fit the characters they represented like a glove.

What are the lines you hear the most?

The first time I played this game (shortly after a release) I spent a lot of time in the Asura city leveling my Tailoring, and one line that I heard sooo many times and really got stuck in my head was “You know what they say… A rotating cog gathers no sporophite”. I love that line, infact I just love Asura lines in general.

“Never capitulate!”. I didn’t even know what that word meant until I heard it from a politician on television a few months later. I was like “ohhh right that’s what my Asura Elementalist was saying. Never admit defeat”

Game's gettin boring quite exponentially

Yeah. Today I found myself bored to the point of anger with my Elementalist. I literally opened my slot skills tree, moused over each and said out loud “boring, usekitten ring boring, useless” etc. Then I proceeded to mouse over my weapons skills and said “boring” 5 times for each Attunement then logged out.

This game seriously needs more PvE skill customization.

Don’t even get me started on traits, I mean wow! 5% extra damage when the enemy is burning, that’s downright amazingly fun for a major trait! chance to cause a condition on a critical hit?! You’re kidding me! I think I’m going to die from fun overload!. There’s a handful which are actually interesting to use and change your play style minorly (and saying handful is being generous) but that’s hardly enough.

Then there’s gear. I tried a condition damage build for my Elementalist. I really wanted to make it work with all the bleeds and burning I have. The damage just sucked. Switching my gear to condition damage decreased my kill time while leveling by at least 50%. Not only that, the one time where condition damage might shine – events, your burning and bleeding stacks (the things you built your character around) get put into a giant melting stack of debuffs from the player zerg and you are just gimping yourself and everyone else. It feels like any gear without power, crit and / or crit damage is just a waste.

For a game with so much PvE content there’s such little actual character customization and virtually zero experimentation. I can’t see myself playing much longer. Maybe level a few more characters halfway…

Do you use the backpack "compact" feature?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Esquilax.3491

Esquilax.3491

I think I used this when I first started playing, but after a while I developed a routine of sorting items that are better off vendored (instead of sold on Trading Post) in the lower left corner of my bag. I also store items that I would possibly bank or use as an alternate weapon etc in the lower right corner of my bag. Finally, I have all my salvage kits, spare gathering gear and other consumable in the top left of my bag.

I honestly wouldn’t even dream of pressing the compact button now, because it would screw up my system.

So I’m curious about other players. How do you deal with inventory management?

For the majority of us, I suspect they reasoned that the cash compensation would be insignificant. However I can confirm for newer players it is quite a decent boost.

I don’t know. I have a fair amount of gold, but if I knew that the 150ish tokens that I turned in could be worth 1g 50s I wouldn’t have voted. I definitely won’t do it again.

Really?

I’ve seen items on the TP worth nearly 2000 Gold. If someone has anywhere near that much then 2G shouldn’t even be worth a keystroke….

I think I like the emphasis on “Rely on yourself” in GW2, it’s just the dodge mechanic is the same across all classes, and can get quite boring.

What about some alternate uses Endurance? How about instead of just dodge, we can choose a:

Sprint: Drain endurance to move a short distance at great speed, does not evade or reduce damage taken.
Deflect. Same as dodge but easier to use. Reduce damage taken by 75%
Block: Same as Deflect but usable with shield and reduce by an extra 5% (80%DR)
Counterattack: Reduce damage taken by only 50% but retaliate with an attack.

I don’t know… I just feel like a few more options would make the system more interesting/engaging.

You could always block if you’re not fully confident in your timing, but a person who dodges at the right moment yields a higher reward. Having sprint would just be a neat alternative if you need to chase someone down or flee. Counterattack for the lulz.

Applying skins to items question

Esquilax.3491

If I apply a consumable “skin changing item” to a piece of equipment, and that consumable “skin changing item” is consumed.

Can I use the item I applied it to, to apply the same skin -from the skin changing item- to another item?

That was hard to type coherently. I hope I made it understandable.

Why is the Elementalist so melee focused?

in Elementalist

Esquilax.3491

I am still an infant player at this game, I have barely a few gold to my name and have yet to complete the story. I’ve gotten my Elementalist to 55 and I have just come to a realization. It’s a melee class. The staff which is the only true ranged weapon has poor damage against any moving targets, so it’s impractical. The scepter practically feels like melee because playing optimally requires the use of blast finishers. Then of course there’s the dagger.

I understand that they’ve moved towards offering melee/ranged/support to all classes in this game so group setups can be more dynamic, but I just feel Ele is slanted too heavily towards melee and it’s confronting considering the traditional role of a caster.

Recently I rolled a mesmer which seems more like a proper caster to me. They have a melee weapon (sword) but I feel like I have an actual choice on weather or not I should use it. The rest of their arsenal has good ranged damage. Every weapon (even the sword) has a clone or phantasm, which is a ranged attack. Then there’s the shatter’s which are a huge bomb of damage/utility that can be used at distance in any weapon set if needed.

This is class polarity is the reverse of what I would have expected. I Initially expected the Mesmer to be a damage over time class like they were in GW1 with all the health degeneration abilities but very little direct damage.

The Elementalist in GW1 did have quite a few melee skills, but I still found skill setups that I could play that didn’t involve using them. In GW2 the Elementalist seems to even have more damage over time than the Mesmer with all our burns and bleeds.

I’m not sure what the purpose of this post was, I guess it’s more or less a complaint. I just feel a little disappointed.

Just a thank you.

Last night I had some of the best fun I’ve had playing video games. The strange thing about it is I wasn’t doing any of the regular video game activities like beating other players or grinding gear. I was jumping around the aptly named Labyrinth Cliffs, looking for a whole bunch of worthless crystals.

I still can’t understand why it was so fun. Perhaps the sense of a treasure hunt, exploration, platforming, problem solving, discovery. It was just great.

Thank you to the truly brilliant developers who crafted such a uniquely interesting and unusual challenge.

Weapon swapping for all professions?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Esquilax.3491

Esquilax.3491

You have to keep in mind Elementalists effectively get 20 skills when they equip a weapon. Albeit it’s limited by an attunement cooldown, but that’s in place to encourage strategy.

Similar story for Engineers. Kits are basically a weapon swap (but far more interesting imo) and are not restricted by any cooldowns.

Any other class with weapon swap has access to only 10 skills on the fly, but the upside being that you can create your own strategic combination of weapon skills.

I think if you understand this, you can see Anet’s logic in how they disabled weapon swapping for those classes, because weapon swapping is intrinsically built into the class.

Lack of z axis and frustrating invisible boundaries on areas that were clearly walkable, as well as the heavy instancing of any zone in the game were my major gripes with GW1.

I must say, they addressed these issues I had in more ways than I could have dreamed. Not only did they add a Z axis… they actually encourage us to climb and explore the world!

Jumping puzzles are one of the most unique and enjoyable experiences I’ve had in any mmo… scrap that, any game I’ve played.

I admit, I do miss the lack of dual class character builds, that was one feature of GW1 that I enjoyed immensely, but I’ve honestly gotten my moneys worth of enjoyment in exploration alone. I feel like an adventurer, and I’m sure the game has much more to offer me, after I slowly fight my way to level 80.

10/10 for exploration Anet, bravo.

I think they should reduce the Turret “auto taunt”. Mobs seem to swarm the turret as soon as you lay it, getting destroyed nearly instantly. It works well with the Thumper Turret though, which turns it into a neat emergency tank. But for other turrets, I think maybe reduce the aggro a bit. Just my 2c.

The Ranger and the Longbow

in Ranger

Posted by: Esquilax.3491

Esquilax.3491

In my opinion, the regular attack damage on the bow is lowish / situational because the barrage ability puts out a huge amount of damage, even on a single target. I find it an ideal weapon to have on switch for dynamic events, because of this and the easy to use utility skills.

But yeah, from my experience in raw 1v1 damage the shortbow outclasses it by far.

Level 20 too late to start crafting?

Well I wasn’t able to craft past level 50 in tailoring (due to lack of jute) until the trading post came up. So finally it did, and at character level 48 I managed to go up to level 52(!) from simply catching up on my crafting and using all the mats I had collected. So it’s definitely never too late.
