I don’t mind the shift away from them, interesting as “Dragons as forces of nature” could have been. They were just used as generic bosses anyhow.
What annoys me is just how utterly random the newly introduced boss is. And how he shows up and all. It’s all so… yeah. Might as well be anyone else.
The whole LS3 was building up Lazrus as the antagonist, and everyone expected a plot twist at the end. But using one of the Human Gods introduces 2 new sub plots that couldn’t happen without direct references to them…. 1. It reinforces their vulnerability as Mist Walkers against the Dragons, and Balth’s motivations are one of shrouded desperation. 2. Theres now a 3rd contender in the scenario, and this is ramping up to change the war into a battle of Juggernauts. The heroes now have to juggle 3 problems…. the overt threat of Dragon minions, the fractured political state of Tyria, and now a second super natural force, with a total disregard for collateral damage.
If they had repeated the scenario of Nightfall, using the players as Agents to the God’s war, we would have the exact same plot line as LS3, but with way more contrivances to explain why anyone in Tyria would actually go along with the God’s plans. The raids and dungeons also house a lot of extended plot; and one constant reoccurring theme is mortals achieving godhood through massive infusions of magical energy.
But there is one major focal point of mythos that has to be addressed, yet has been largely hand waved up until this point….. the Mists itself. Despite never being mentioned directly in story, the Mist wars and multiverse theory is now an integral element to the Dragon wars ever since it was introduced via Omadd’s machine. The dragons powers are bound to the physical realm of Tyria; yet we know for a fact that Mist walkers easily traverse between these realms. Thats a massive plot hole if you ignore the Mist Wars, because it would otherwise be the most direct solution to the Elder dragons…. a place to evacuate to, and theoretically infinite resources to wage war against them. The only things preventing this is our inability to navigate its metaphysical design with any sort of reliability, and the constant threat of invading forces from the borderlands.
So no… Balth as an antagonist is not “random”. The inclusion of the Mist walkers were inevitable the moment the metaphysical nature of Tyria was brought into the main story. The fact that they’re addressing it now is mostly to prevent the story from getting too chaotic before they can tie some of these threads together. Its also why they knocked out 2 Elder dragons to buy the story time, ended Caudicus, and put Logan in charge of the Pact….. there are too many loose ends in the story right now to generate the plot focus they need for a better story experience.
This might not seem obvious to most…. but look back at High Fantasy movies mimicking the structure of Lord of the Rings. Or even compare Peter Jackson’s Hobbit to the older Animated versions. Lord of the Rings is 3 interwoven story threads (and I don’t mean story arcs), comprised of multiple plot threads, each on a different scale. The Hobbit is one story thread made from 3 repeating plot threads. The thing to take away from this is Tolkenesqe stories can easily balloon out of control if you don’t know how to keep the plot threads personal, but well connected. That was a big problem with GW2’s personal story…. events escalated rapidly, but the various plot threads were not tied together well. Its also what happened to the Hobbit movie, as elements were introduced and discarded abruptly; resulting in things being utterly confusing at best, and completely unresolved at worst. Heart of Thorns tried to reset the board by nullifying the Pact….. but Mordremoth wasn’t a compelling villain for a more narrowed story focus, as him putting too much focus on the heroes would be utterly overbearing. Its basically the Mount Doom ark of LotR once you realize HOT Map Metas and the HOT personal story are actually divergent. Its also why the story thread told from the perspective of the map meta is much stronger, because salvaging a shattered army and bringing it to bear against the heart of the enemy for a rematch, is exactly the type of underdog story most people find compelling.
With the way they’re trying to steer events, the expansion is clearly trying to shoot for a more focused approach to story telling, and sort out the problems of who is in main roles and who are in supporting roles. The pact is clearly going to be shifted into a Supporting role, and the heroes are clearly going to spending the majority of the expansion truth seeking. Its hard to say who well be the main antagonist (with so many on the table at the moment), but I wouldn’t be surprised if the first or third act involves Kraktorik fighting something other then the Heroes/Pact forces.
You make many interesting points, one that should be underlined is the meta events. It really hits home when you have time enough to go from one event to the next or at least multiple events. You start to see the threads weave together.

Villains like Scarlet and Caudecus are much more interesting than the Elder Dragons. Because the dragons are giant forces of nature, they lack personality.
Agreed, I really hope for another if not Scarlet herself! A stroke of the pen brings all to life again!
They are dealing with a living, breathing world.
They dialed that waaaay back during season 1 and probably completely scrapped with season 2. We are theme park now.
They at least tried, most games reinvent eachother, new mmos are still rehashing medieval themes.. zzzzzzz Boring. We have portals, Golems, the age of science, not just alchemy, there is even talk of expanding gliding with more abilities to attack from the air. I love going to BS Fenn for just that reason. All we can do is wait. I for one am sick of starting over. Why do you think people still play WOW? Because starting over is annoying. The new update isn’t even out and people are complaining.
Paitience…
One of the most maddening tasks is trying to please everyone. It can’t be done. But we try. Anet is trying to. All the moving parts in this game, all the different facets wanting their attention. They are dealing with a living, breathing world. Most mmo’s are sandboxes, or theme parks. Anet broke that mold. They dumped the trinity, they added underwater battles, jumping puzzles, gliding. We have more means of transportation then any game I have played. We can even send gifts to eachother through the BLTC. Remember the attack on LA? I have played mmo’s since 2003 and I have never seen a braver step then destroying a city, and rebuilding it. That battle felt so real, the feels after seeing smoldering ruins.
My point is this, we may not be happy with every single step, or change, or update. But we can have a little faith and let things unfold. We have a new update coming, a season finale. Then an expansion. Fighting Dragons is fun, but we have the possibility of being caught in a battle of the gods. “My light was dim, they’ll notice me now!” Or words to that effect. I don’t know about you, but being thrown into a war of that magnitude… BRING IT ON!! We faced one god in gw1, now imagine all 6. That would be amazing and give them stories to unfold, imagine the divide in the citizens religous beliefs. Look at Balth revealing himself, Kas fell to her knees, Jory drew her sword. Even they chose opposite sides of that fight. That is how I hope the expansion goes. We’ll see.

I notice many players in game have not grasped the concept of “Run and Gun”. They stand in one place and wipe far too often. You cannot stand still. If you keep moving, your chances of success increase, and you DON’T DIE!!! Then entire point of the OP’s post is mute. “Stick and move Stallion, stick and move” Apollo Creed.
“Next time you ask someone to save the world, make sure they liked it the way it was!”
Or simply change the color of their text to match the tag?
Why does auto loot – world ability, fail to work once you are dead? You end up seeing 5-10 bags around your corpse and you cant collect them unless you are raised by someone else or immediately respawn and then the bags will again automatically go into your inventory but the ones on the ground that appear when you are dead before you can respawn stay.
Plz fix it so it goes into your inventory no matter what.
I’m more concerned with the quality of the loot. That said, sounds like a solo penalty, taking on mobs solo resulting in quicker loot aquisition. The game prefers us in groups to carry the weaker players. Or it’s to combat bots.
(edited by Evon Skyfyre.9673)
Actually the chance of it being attacked again makes sense. It’s a port, a hub of commerce.
That said, it needs ships coming and going.
It is possible the new LA is sparce and open for a reason. When the game launched the traffic in LA was high and lag was frequent. It could be they anticipated it would get worse so the new version was implemented to reduce future issues?
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
And put ’em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half to seem ’em
No no no
Don’t it always seem to go,
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Hey farmer farmer
Put away the DDT
I don’t care about spots on my apples
Leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Hey, now they paved paradise
To put up a parking lot
Why not?

As I was next to the toilet in LA, I look around and realize I really missed the old LA.. even the broken one! This new version is so freaking flat and theme park! It doesn’t feel like a city!! Please destroy this gw2 sea world city and give me my OG LA back! Or at least bring the old version back in some festivals events or something! Please?!
I think an event of that scope again would be amazing. Anywhere. Ummm they could nuke and sink Southsun, wouldn’t break my heart. The Old LA had more character. But, progress..
First not asking for all Guild armor to be an outfit, just the 3 types on the npc that we buy as skins (Guild Archmage etc.,). It would really be great to rep our guild during outings. But with so many wondeful armor sets that we work hard to obtain, reskinning them is simply not an option. Making a guild outfit, would really help. We could switch to it for guild missions etc, then go back to our regular looks.
Please consider this.
Well, we beat it tonight with 5 secs left. But to be fair, lag has been killing us. I hope the issues end soon. Thanks for links to guides, I will read them. I fell into a group tonight where the commander explained every step before we went in. Made it a lot easier for our team.
Recent run had north not make the 2 min window and word was they did it on purpose (stopped burn). Luckily we beat it within overall time limits.
Okay, there must be some point to this event beyond loot. Because with the exception of quantity, it’s pretty much the same (win or lose). Okay. Nothing new, moving on. Are there any guides to this? I looked and didn’t see any but that does not mean they don’t exist. lol
South seems to be the lynch pin. If it is not done right you will fail over and over. I really explore my own dark side when floppers are out. I think of hideous ways to kill them. Truly dark imagery. Scary actually lol I HATE THEM.
sigh ok back to my rant, err point, umm both. Guides. Any good ones?
Party of five
Plenty of friends

AETHERBLADES!!! They try to take over Labyrinthe, DW goes there to see what or who is behind it. I even know a way to bring back.. SCARLET. When her ship went down in LA harbor, admidst the old ruins of gw1 LA there is a tunnel leading up to a cave… (grab your swim fins it really is there guys) She dragged herself out of the water, her henchman secreted her away. NO, renegades from the Nightmare court secreted her away, and she has begun looking for a new ally. 4 more Elder Dragons right? Heck, bring back Shiro. He died and came back over and over in GW1. LOL
(edited by Evon Skyfyre.9673)
I’d personally would prefer if Dry Top changed and turned into the new area for the bazar, but that’s just me i guess.
Same with Southsun, would love it if changes would occur there because living story returns to the area and shows how it was affected.
Instancing would be great for this, then again, that maybe would need some sort of party leader to work in groups…
No, I get it. We all have favorite places. Me, I prefer the look of LA at launch, but time moved on. And the battle was epic. Man, they need to do that again. Have an attack on that scale somewhere. Jormag could go after Hoelbrak.
They could even add in leyline gliding. Dwayna knows it is a very under used skill for such a high tier skill. And updrafts, a cliff based seaside area would surely have updrafts. There are sooooo many possibilities with the current games abilities.
Oh man, talk about homesick, I can see that place, every nook, every perch. Gliding from the top areas to the bottom.. WANT!!!
Anet, more unique and fun things to do with existing content, is a CFO’s dream. Less investment, it’s already there (Please say you didn’t remove it permanently, as in code etc is gone. Even if it never returns don’t take away the dream) it could remain open. (Heck Southsun does and it is a ghost town. (Seriously, if you need map space to bring back Labyrinthe nuke Southsun, sink it, res the Vizier he loves sinking places).
Ok ranting but if nothing else, you really created a wondeful place. All that work. Just gone. Make it the headquaters of Dragon Watch. Come on, something.. -.-
(edited by Evon Skyfyre.9673)
Thought occurs, change crystal search for gliding achs?
Interesting, you’re suggesting a mastery line to learn the crystal skills? I suppose there could be “residue” spots where crystals once lay that those in the know can trigger to jump and soar and dash.
Or Oakheart. Have a quest to bring a seed from Draconis Mon to spawn a plant in Labyrinthe. You complete the quest, unlock the use of a Oakheart Node there and you have a new way to use older content. Because of the seaside climate the vines are not as stable and do not last as long or shoot as high as they do on DM. Plenty of ways to remove the easy button aspect of Oakheart.
Or (ideas keep coming lol) Make a questline to help them return to Labyrinthe. You round up those wishing to go back, and guide and guard them on their return trip.
(edited by Evon Skyfyre.9673)
Regarding the map assets themselves, ANet actually has a lore reason to not change that much of it, really. Based on the listings of years of events in the Story Journal, it’s now been three years since the Dry Top incident so the Zephyrites have had ample time to return to the Labyrinthine Cliffs (which acted as a trading area long before the Zephyrites showed up there) to rebuild their ships. Besides, not all of the Zephyrite fleet crashed back then; only the Zephyr Sanctum and the two or so ships it hit while going down so most of the fleet is still intact.
The only changes ANet would really need to make lorewise: add a few NPCs repairing stuff here and there as well as remove the NPCs Aerin and whatever other named NPC casualties were seen or referenced in Dry Top, have new Master of Peace and Master of Sun NPCs to replace their predecessors, and possibly take out some dialogue and add new, relevant dialogue referencing the passage of time and them moving on from the tragedy they experienced.
Hopefully the Labyrinthine Cliffs will return someday in some form. It’s a fun, beautiful map to explore, and it would be a shame if newer players never get to experience it and all the rich lore it offered.
+1000000000 I would live there. Like I did before lol. Oh and maybe this time Marjory will wear a swimsuit as well.. lol
Thought occurs, change crystal search for gliding achs?
Sure, use logic.. >.< LOL
That said, many areas of little or no importance exist. And places we loved, are gone. Another MMO I played solved this dilemma. They took such areas and made them accessible by talking to an npc. They were like time capsules.
The biggest problem with some areas being gone is telling people about them and they want to go and experience them, and can’t. IT’s very off putting to new players to hear about Scarlets raid on LA, the battles. But they only exist in memory. and yes that is how real life is, tales of days gone by. But this is a game, we come here to give reality the brush off. If reality is needed here, bring in rent, utilities etc.. I guess TO ME, the LS idea doesn’t work. I want to be able to go back thru those times on each new character. So much about this game is amazing, LS.. not so much sorry guys.. just not a fan of the format sigh
(edited by Evon Skyfyre.9673)
This is not a complaint, just a question so I can better understand.
How is it decided what can and cannot be left in game. Orr will be a ravaged dried out fishbowl, probably until the game ends (Even though we defeated Zaitan, cleansed Orr etc). But Labyrinthe is gone because the LS moved past that chapter. I do wonder what is involved in some areas making the cut, and staying accessible, and other fading into legend. And yes Orr is a fixed land area that must remain. But why couldn’t some still be living at Labyrinthe? (Okay the Mesmer in me misses the festival but hang on a bit) Why is Southsun still there? It’s kinda useless, but it must serve some cosmic plan. I just want to understand.
Please temper your replies, I’m not asking for things to be back as much as why and what.
Side Note to Devs: Draconis Mons reminds me a lot of how I felt helping others in the festival of the 4 winds, and for that many many thanks. Labyrinthe is, was, Mesmer Heaven. I still look at my keepsake in cities and explain what it was like to new players.
The community aspect of the game, helping random players, it really feels like being in another world. The only limits are our imagination. I really don’t like logging off, but well need to eat, sleep lol
Oh the best cure for a bad day, watch Asurans running around, fighting, exploring. I seem to attract them, I put my comm tag up when farming ore etc (to mark rich locations, etc.. when I mention it in mapchat), and I soon have a follower or two. Usually one is an Asuran. In Orr one found me and guarded me by circling me. Picture this, a Norn being guarded by an Asuran that is almost up to my knee. Love this game
One suggestion, grass seed, Orr, nuff said.

This is why we have gliders.
Exactly, why walk, or ride, when you can glide…
Ping as high as 800..
Faceless trolls inflict insults, hate speech, racist remarks, sexist and misogynistic remarks on others, all under the cloak of anonymity. It’s a form of bullying, and modern society is cracking down on it. I wonder if players know that a log of all conversations public and private is kept. This came to light in GW1, and I have no doubt it does in GW2. So troll away you never know someday, you will try to login only to find your account has been banned and your characters have been deleted. But hey, it’s just a game, doesn’t matter right?
GW1 had Normal and Hard Modes. But they didn’t have an open world. Maybe, a way exists to set modes to storyline missions in instances?
All things said and done, this is a business. Anet must think that providing consistently more challenging content will make them more money, will make the game provide more money long term, or that those who enjoy that type of content spend more money. But, is it sustainable?
I don’t believe that is the case but they clearly do. If you played thru the first year of the living story, you saw them provide significant new content every two weeks. It was the most fun by far but they stopped and said it was just not sustainable. So they were spending more money generating content than they were taking in. They had all the original sales money to work with but they must have seen it wouldn’t last. Four years later and a change in leadership, and it looks like they will have to learn that lesson again. I believe those players looking for only the most challenging content will spend a bunch to prepare for it, but if it’s not sustained, they will move on to the next game real fast. Time will tell.
+10000000000000 Totally agree. There was a speech by Jeff Strain on gw1’s site (that has since been removed), that spoke of how to build a successful mmo. For better or worse, GW2 seems to be going out of it’s way to go against everything that made Gw1 great and brought us here expecting more. Yes there are many new aspects of the game here that I love, but the core ideals have been abandoned. One of the best points he made was to not try to be or beat WOW. Be the best game you can be. GW2 seems to worry more about the imaginary economy then the game itself. It’s become trade-wars, not guild wars now.
(edited by Evon Skyfyre.9673)
In every MMO I have played, I hear “It’s an mmo you should have to group to do everything”. Is this valid in GW2? As new areas are added, there is of course things you can do solo but for many without uber builds and the best of the best, they cannot. Do they deserve to complete the same story content as others, or should they accept their fate, GG or quit if they prefer no to, or cannot find groups? Some will suffer due to language barriers others don’t run the flavor of the month builds so they aren’t asked or accepted in raids, or they don’t know every facet of every meta and should not even login? Myself, on my Mesmer, I cursed this game and the developers and gave up on the story content once I hit the Silverwastes. Now that my Mes is a chrono, running Berserker, ascended trinkets, etc.. she can go back to running the story content, but I have MMO exp since 2003, so I know how to stay alive, and have the gear to let me (please don’t start giving me build complaints mine works for me, lets stay on topic. I can do the content, this is about those that cannot being left behind and revenues in game being effected by it – if they cannot progress they quit and do not buy future expansions so revs fall).
Sooo is FS the new meta? Will all future expansions have more group content then solo? Will story content always be fair for some and not for others? In GW1 you could offset such issues by using companions. But players whined and complained they couldn’t find groups and shouldn’t need companions. (ummm wat?).
Thoughts? Ideas? Too bad so sad go away?
If this has happened and been reported, file a ticket and escalate it to legal and advise that you feel you are being cyber stalked.
“Cyberstalking is the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk or harass an individual, group, or organization. It may include false accusations, defamation, slander and libel. … Cyberstalking is a criminal offense under various state anti-stalking, slander and harassment laws.”

Change your settings to only accept messages from those on your friends list.
You could simply repeat the gathering, and talking to Kodama etc.. but no ach points. Or if that wasn’t doable, they could make the back piece like the other ach rewards and let us retreive it from our ach panel like some of the other items there.
Finished mine tonight, and it’s great (Odd visual but meh..). My question is why only one per account? I have 5 characters. In a game searching for more for us to do, this seems to be a no-brainer. The increase in stats isn’t game breaking, and many would welcome redoing the achievements to fight boredom.
Any word why they chose to make it one per account only? Is it because of the additional ach points? Given the ach rewards overall, I hope not because ach milestone rewards are weak to say the least.

As mentioned above, Magic Find works primarily when killing enemies in Core Tyria maps.
If you want to see it in action, buff it all the way and run events that spawn tons of mobs in Cursed Shore.
So it only effects farming and trains? If so then why is worldboss loot so horrible? They chose to give us trash over and over?
Thanks for all the input. Lots to digest.
I remember when MF was added “smoke and mirrors” came to mind lol Like the Exotic bags for green loot..
Example the Vine event in AB, I open all Ex. Chests and just click salvage all and walk away. I never even hear of anyone getting anything decent.
The age old Gamers Lament is “This loot s…”. Okay, to some extent this will never change. But, with the advent in game of Magic Find, I thought this would change to a degree. I have wondered how much magic find is needed, but started salvaging etc, bringing mine up, albeit slowly, it is increasing. I then heard of players with 300% MF still getting bottom of the barrel loot. I understand you won’t get a precursor drop every kill, but at some point will I see more Exotics? As is I have seen maybe 5 in 6 months. Is that normal? I am currently 122%. Interesting how it says “Increases your chance to find RARE items” lol
Possibly rubber banding and returning you to safest save point which was before completing the hearts?
Sorry guys couldn’t resist..

You’d need it unlocked when you first arrive in the hall.
I haven’t even figured out how to get to and unlock the waypoint in the Gilded Hollow near the center (I think it’s the wp for the PvP arena).
go to npc below it and walk through shimmering wall.
Thanks. I’ve looked around and spoken to npcs. I don’t recall seeing a shimmering wall though. Maybe I need graphics set higher? I’ll check it out.
Do you have the Arena unlocked, or do you just have the npc there at a tent?
Found it. Thank you for your help.
Glad to help!

Place oakheart essence and you explore everything. I use 2 in my Guilded Hollow hall and 1 in my Lost Precipice and can reach all the nooks and crannies.
Indeed, we have 9 Oak Heart nodes so far lol, they are a lot of fun! But not all our members can use them yet. And we have some that do not own HoT yet so no gliding, but we have it all setup to help them.
I run into players in guilds that do NOT know about the upper areas of their Guilded Hollow guild halls all the time (up where?). It might be a nice idea to add a wp at the top of the gh (base of the tree at the highest point would be my idea). It would encourage members to explore up there. There is soooo much up there (Middle layers etc), I really am amazed at the detail the devs put into designing it. It really is worth the exploration. You will need to build a little to get them access to certain areas, but that is part of the fun as well.
They would still need to get there to unlock it, so it’s not like an easy button.

Upgrades are as easy or difficult as your members let it be. As is donating. My original assertion is many in game cannot donate 100’s of gold because they haven’t played since launch, and spend a lot of time on the BLTC playing the stock market. Some have lives and spend less than a few hours a week in game. But I guess they have no right to expect anything, I mean go hard core or go home right? The MMO creedo. If a small group of friends wanted to form a guild and see it grow, as mentioned it can take many months. That’s fine. My suggestion would help them, but according to the replies here that is bad? Go figure.
