Escape from and Battle for Lions Arch Events

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

I think one glaring result of the Escape from and Battle for Lions Arch, is that massive world events require too much attention from Anet, and require too many competent players. OR it’s all wasted. Right now on HoD, the Knight events come and go with little or no interest. Why? People are working and involved in their daily routine. The Knights are not doable there until 9:00 PM EST or so. Otherwise the server is a ghost town. As word of the meager rewards filter down, people aren’t even logging in. Yes I know I can play leap frog, and hopefully find a higher population server, but it’s not like I can jump from server to server checking. Who has that kind of time to waste?

The LS was an interesting experiment, but it failed. It happens. The Knight battles and beyond, need to be instanced. Anet knew this going in. It’s a tried and true MMO premise. The time updating and patching etc, could have been used to design a more detailed ship. Make it a scale able instance that offers greater rewards for larger groups with greater difficulty. If Anet had followed this, it would be a screaming success. As is, it was/is a costly failure.

Ok lesson learned. How Anet proceeds from here will dictate if players stay or go. I’ve talked to people that were daily players that have gone back to other MMO’s. Some even went as far as deleting the game from their computers. And some, went back to a Pay to Play MMO! They wouldn’t stay and play for free, they left and are actually paying to play another MMO. That in and of itself, speaks volumes. If ever there was a time to say “Okay, we tried the LS, we gave it our all, and the players aren’t happy with it. Let’s dust ourselves off and move forward. We (Anet) need a real deal, tried and true paid expansion, like we did for GW1”. I won’t hold my breath though, it seems Anet is very prideful and will go down in flames before admitting they made a mistake. I hope I’m wrong.

All they need to do, is have everyone get it. Then they can fix it at their leisure. 5 pts towards ach. total shouldn’t be that big of a deal. The trouble is tracking it down. If anyone has completed it, logic dictates it worked at some point. Thus the maddening task of finding what is the problem. The code governing that particular achievement may be WAI, but another action borks it.

Thank you for the 3/11 patch

Evon Skyfyre.9673

I have been laying into Anet for this latest LS, so I thought I would drop a line and say thank you for improving it with the latest patch. With the knights massively more doable, people show up and you beat it. I just beat them twice, along with prime and scarlet, having never managed any of them (I know, I could have done scarlet with the back piece, but I didn’t want to if it didn’t come to that).

I still find the fights gloriously uninteresting and would much prefer smaller instanced fights to these, but I recognize you were going for epic and you wanted to make the fights not merely aft on auto. That’s a tough balance. You flubbed it at first, because it was awful, but now it’s about as good as it could be, consistent with the above. So, thank you. I have a much better taste in my mouth regarding this event.

(Escape was far better, tho. Just sayin.)

Agreed, you beat me to it. I would also like to thank Anet for the recent adjustment to the Knights. People grouped after it hit and were pleased and so excited to face Scarlet. Well done. Now, that said… let’s talk rewards.. XD

I Gave Up On This Game Am I Wrong?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Evon Skyfyre.9673

Guild Wars 2 is a generic mmo. Guild Wars 1 was a complete, well thought out world of imagination and loads of fun. Anyone reading this should know. If you loved GW1 you will not be happy with GW2. they share a name only. Jeff Strains vision is no where to be found in GW2. Anet has said they feel pretty much every aspect of GW1 was wrong and purposely made GW2 the exact opposite. Recently the co-founder of Anet left to join Dead Labs founded by Jeff Strain (founder of Anet, and driving force behind GW1.). MMO’s are all making the same mistake it seems they make their game a WOW clone and it fails. Hopefully the future is brighter. SWTOR is a 300 mil failure financially. Blizzard put their new mmo back into alpha testing and moved some of it’s development teams to work on other projects. All the mmo game co’s need to do is listen to the players. But they absolutely refuse to do so. I think I can safely say in 5 years or less, MMO’s will no longer exist as they do today. Even a former developer from WOW said they killed the genre. There are no inventive or creative games anymore. They all seem the same. I read an article the other day that said as of it’s posting GW2 had sold 3.6 million copies, but only had approx. 460k of regular players. That is a pretty big gap. I’d call it a failure except they do not live on subs. I suppose it’s possible the 460k of players bring in enough money via in game purchases. But I doubt it. Chat in game seems to lean towards little or no real money being spent. Most say they would never pay real money for anything offered.

Sad.. I was so excited when they announced GW2. Now.. I play because it’s free and just to pass the time.

My Nvidia settings for GW2

Evon Skyfyre.9673

I have an older system and the standard reply of “You need a better system” doesn’t work for me in this economy. Sooo I have been playing with my settings and I actually have things working well and can even join in zergs in LA etc and not freeze up or crash that often (I usually have CTD’s when the server is loaded, and I’ve come to the conclusion that is anets issue not mine). I run Windows 7. Here are my settings.

I run the game as an administrator.
I use compatibility mode set to xp sp3.

In my Nvidia control panel I use these settings:

Ambient Occlusion: Performance
Anisotropic Filtering: UGS (application controlled)
Antialiasing – FXAA (grayed out)
Antialiasing – Gamma correction: UGS (on)
Antialiasing – Mode UGS (application controlled)
Antialiasing – Setting (grayed out)
Antialiasing – Transparency UGS (off)
CUDA – GPUs: ALL *click the drop down menu and choose the 2nd setting Click the radio button marked "Use these GPUs. " followed by the lower setting (mine shows Geforce GT 630).
Maximum pre-rendered frames: 1
Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration: Single display performance
Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance
Texture filtering – Negative LOD Bias UGS (allow)
Texture filtering – Quality: High Performance
Texture filtering – Trilinear optimization: On
Threaded optimization: On
Triple Buffering: On
Vertical sync: On

Suggestions appreciated. As I said it’s an older system. 3GHZ/4 gig of ram dual core. If anyone tries these settings, go slow, and keep an eye on things. I offer no warranty or guarantee. These are simply the settings I’m using. Maybe it helps someone.

Hands down my favorite companion, her humor and quirky way of seeing things, I enjoy her a lot. That said..

I knew it was coming, oh I’d forgotten it for a time. Then Claw Island. It was like a Charr blind sided me. My Sylvari Engineer was having so much fun with her. He always was so solemn before they met. She brought out the best in him, then… gone.. Curse you Anet. The writer in me filled in many gaps. They grew closer, and travelled across Tyria and beyond. When she admitted she was quite fond of him and how she was glad they met. Gone.. Curse you Anet. The best mention of her was after the retaking of Claw Island.. "Sieran was… unique, she will be missed.. " Curse you Anet.
But wait we get to keep Trehearne? That makes it better right? … right? Curse you Anet.

We definitely don’t want to go to the level of fragmenting the game to the extent that we have PvP, WvW, and PvE versions of all the skills as that creates a disconnect with the characters we want you to use in all those places. That said, we are certainly discussing the idea of adding skills that would have a WvW focus. But they are just on the discussion level.

So the way this was handled in GW1 was bad?

Yes. Not only was it incredibly complex to maintain it became completely unwieldy to players as well. GW2 has made a great number of changes to systems specifically to avoid the complications we created in GW1. Not creating multiple versions of skills for 3 areas of the game would be one of those changes.

I appreciate your candor, trouble is it’s also one more reason for many of us to go elsewhere. Sorry, but to be equally as blunt, I’m not concerned with the degree of difficulty it adds to the job of balance. The developers are paid to deal with that. If I tell my boss something makes my job too hard, he’ll nod and hire someone else. That’s the gig we signed on for as developers. I guess your boss is more easy going than mine, or most in the industry. If your superior comes in tomorrow and says “Do it..” you’re in the same boat as me. Do it or look for work. No easy solution. The result for now is pvp kills pve yet again.

It would be interesting to see the WvW players that have NOT played GW1, try the pvp system there. I bet a high percentage would prefer it. I’ve played a fair few mmo’s and the one positive thing all the hard core pvpr’s have said that tried GW1 pvp, is/was they liked the system and preferred it.

So, 8 of my 9 characters just had their first birthday. Why? Because I was so excited for Guild Wars 2 and to play every profession after the beta.

Why were they all made on release night? Because 1) I wanted to grab their names that I came up with and 2) because I knew Anet from Guild Wars 1 rewarded characters with a birthday present for their characters every year.

For those of you who never played GW1, the birthday present could be opened to reveal one of several minipets of different rarity. The minipets were tradeable, so if you didn’t get the one you like, you could sell it, or simply keep it and buy one from another player who doesn’t want theirs or maybe got a duplicate from a second character. It was never a HUGE deal, but it was nice to earn a unique reward for being a loyal player each year.

So now why am I disappointed? Yes, I did get my birthday present….The same one 8 (soon to be 9) times!

I am disappointed because this minipet is…

A) Mini Queen Jennah, which until this part in the living story (that I didn’t even bother to do because GW2 has been boring me lately, but that’s a whole different story) was never really involved to much with the game. Why couldn’t I see maybe a mini Zhitan, or something cool that actually had to do with the something more epic in Guild Wars 2.

B) Everyone gets this minipet! Mini Queen Jennah is not unique, not tradeable, and not interesting. What in the heck am I supposed to do with 9 account-bound Mini Queen Jennahs? I don’t even like using minipets in this game because every time I click “Deposit all collectables” my minipets disappear as well! Why can’t I at least right click on my minipet to select it to not auto-deposit with my crafting materials?

C) Not only does everyone get this minipet, everyone gets this minipet several times, depending on how many characters you’ve created and when. Why would I want the same minipet 9 times? Can’t I at least have a chance for something different? With Anet’s RNG-obsessed nature, it figures they leave it out when it could be used for something interesting.

I’ve been very disappointed with Guild Wars 2 lately, and this was just another slap in the face to myself, who I’d consider a hardcore, loyal Guild Wars fan.

By all I have read, everything done in GW1 was bad. Even the devs here have said as much when asked why we can’t have something like it was in GW1. You’ll get 1 of 2 responses here from players, they boil down to the same thing, play or go away. I agree duplicate b-day gifts is kinda odd. It shows no imagination or planning. GW1 is completely different from GW2 and it always will be. They share a name, that is all. GW1 was/is a complete world, GW2 is a theme park. Get used to it, it’s WAI.

When the invasions first started I kept hearing players complaining about all the ugly shoulders in their bank that they’ll never use. I happen to like them and want them, but they never drop from those boxes for me. I thought they had a high drop rate. Admittedly, I gambled and instead of taking the gear pieces to build my own, I went for the RNG boxes. That’s on me. But how many invasions should I expect to have gone thru before I got them?

If I could trade them you’d have the 3 I have so far. I do not like the look of them personally.

There should be a way built into the achievement panel. In my world of programming, the current method would have never seen the light of day. the brass would never approve it. Anet is competent and knows what to do, the problem is the 2 week schedule they have locked themselves into. If it was monthly they would have more time for testing and polishing.

Anyone that says “Oh I’d quit if it was monthly..” is just not being honest. 90% of the people that play MMOs play more than one. The industry knows this, and doesn’t care. You can’t have all the players attention all the time.

Or better still setup a perma death server.

He’s soloable without taking even 1 damage, just grab a ranged weapon and a skill that grants stability for 5 seconds with a cooldown of ~45seconds or lower.

So much for scaling difficulty lol, they ran into that in SWTOR in one of their dungeons the final boss could be 3 manned . (It was meant to be a raid lol)

The thought occurs, could budget be the reason for no expansion? The real world economy is still not doing good, even Blizzard is going back to the drawing board for their mmo Titan. ESO will have a sub and mt’s. Guess they aren’t sure what is going to work.

If they do an expansion they must write it, hire voice talent, etc.. if the people I have talked to are like most, hardly any of them have spent any real money in game. They play for free and that is why they are here. I have a feeling that is how most players view the game. The players that gush over the game and say how wonderful it is might not feel the same is Anet dropped MT’s and added a monthly subscription (don’t start foaming at the mouth they won’t add one).

Upon further reflection they, (Anet) seem to be the most excited about the way the game is headed. Seems in game and here, most are worried and losing interest. I have said it before, Anet, make the game we want to play, not the game you want to play. Unless pesky things like profit and ROI are not important.

Try not to confuse players attending an event with it being popular. Many are just bored and will either go see it, or log off. That said all our back and forth here amounts to words on a page. What will be telling is the revenues generated. After the jubilee and the Benny Hill zergs, most players are going to have a lot of gold to turn into gems. Which does not make any money for Anet/Ncsoft. Not good. An expansion brings a new influx of cash. Conservatively if the current box owners bought an expansion, for say 29.95, You’re looking at about 84 mil in revenues. The living story costs them money and unless the bltc sales jump because of it, they aren’t going to see anywhere near that after a year of updates.

I really don’t see what the fuss is about.

The only difference between an expansion and the living story is how the content gets pushed out

Expansion – content comes out all at once
Living Story – content is gradually pushed out

People naturally hate change and still think of the old MMO mentality. Expansions are just as dated as paying for subscriptions.

Easy one.

Expansion = quality content coming out, when ready
Living Story = mediocre or worse content coming out due to schedule

Expansion = getting whole guilds back to the game for months
Living Story = getting less and less people back for days if you are lucky

Expansion = good advertising in the whole MMO community
Living Story = only some in Anets team and some hardcore fans really care

Expansion = Something you talk about still for years (Nightfall? EotN?) with story and immersion
Living Story = Very few updates are remebered like a halloween or winters day equivalent, but no immersion or story

Expansion = Full blown story lines in game giving rich playing experience
Living Story = some blogs on the web site for those who visit

I could go on, but I think the point is clear. LS, even when it is getting better can never hope to accomplish what good sound expansions can and will offer.

Spot on, well said and explained!

At best Celtic, the LS qualifies as a dlc.

As a consumer, I just like having a choice in when (and therefore, how much) to pay for an expansion. I waited years and years to get Factions b/c it was in my opinion a poor expansion compared to Nightfall which to the opposite extreme I had purchased instantly when I found out what it included (customizable Heroes).

And before anyone says “Well this is free”, uhh uh, there’s no such thing as Free.
And If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. All the “Free content” they’ve been handing us lately has only made the Content I actually paid good money for worse, and worse …. and worse still.

There’s an old expression about something that’s free. “It’s not worth paying for”.

I think one thing that would help is to stop calling it a “living story”, because it’s neither. It’s what other games call a “live event”. One can argue it lasts longer than a live event but mores the pity. If it lasted a day or so, happened randomly and had greater reward potential, or titles, etc, it would be far and away a more anticipated and exciting occurance.

The biggest problem gaming companies face is we the gaming public are well versed, with many years of experience and know exactly what we want. The problem is gaming companies seem to ignore all that and tell us what we want and they are wrong 99% of the time. At least GW2 can’t be called a wow clone like most are.

I agree with others here that have said they will believer it when they see it, and in our case, download it. I will go further out on a limb and say they may consider an expansion when and if, China and Korea are a huge success. I think every resource is focused on that.

Can we take this statement to mean that no “expansion” content has been worked on? Since I assume you’d have to know the method before you developed it all

We’ve said this before, so it shouldn’t be a spoiler, but it’s clear that the message hasn’t totally gotten out there yet:

For the past year, we’ve had some larger projects going on in the background we haven’t discussed yet. Our major focus however has been on making the core Gw2 live game as solid as possible, details of what’s coming still to address that core game experience can be found here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/
For the projects cooking in the background, we’ll go into more detail on those in the future.

I hope you put out a press release to this effect otherwise this is what others that have left see..

“So right now we’re not really looking at expansions as an option,” lead content designer Mike Zadorojny told me on his visit to London last week.

“It’s something that’s on the table but it’s not something we’re focused on, because what we want to do is – our idea here is that with Living World, we can do what expansions would have done but do it on a more regular basis.”

I pressed him to tell me whether there would be a Guild Wars 2 expansion this year and he shook his head to indicate no. What about next year, I asked?

“If we do this right,” he answered, “we will probably never do an expansion and everything will be going into this Living World strategy.”

seeing articles like this, then hearing a different story here is making us a little dubious to say the least.

As for players in game behaving badly as a result of the LS events, we are in a faceless world, under a false persona. We escape reality to live our dreams in game. This doesn’t lend itself to what would be accepted behavior outside the game. I don’t condone the behavior of some, I’m just not surprised by it. I’ve seen hate speech, racial remarks, sexist remarks, verbal abuse etc.. I report it, but I also do not expect much to come from it. Most games look on this type of problem as WAI. They want every dollar they can get. Who spends it seems to be of little or no concern.
