I’m guessing most of the players that are upset about this didn’t play GW1. Anet is a great gaming company, except for one glaring fault. They spend 90% of their time worrying about the loot we get and the quality. They won’t change, it will get worse, they are never happy, and we will never convince them otherwise. If it really upsets ya, then this game is not for you. I don’t like it, but learned to just let it roll off. Oh I’ll complain now and then, but I know it is falling on deaf ears.

Skritts are thrilled. We won’t get their sparklies anymore.. Colin’s post about MF being counter productive made me spit my coffee laughing. Anet gave us the ability, they gave us the add-ons, the food, the jewelry, then they nerfed the loot drops and are bothered because we used the items and foods to boost our results?

solo attitude is killing this game

Interesting comment, I’ve heard the reverse a lot too. “Not enough solo content when you hit 80.. etc..” This dialogue has popped up in every mmo I’ve played actually. There is the school of thought, “If you want to play alone play a game like Skyrim..”. Actually what a lot of people want to say but ego stops them, is.. “I don’t know my class, I don’t feel like learning, just kill all the stuff we encounter, and let me grab my shinies so my guild thinks I’m uber”. Ok this is a bit exaggerated, but not entirely.

See when I started playing, you didn’t really have “Healers etc..” this type of mechanic came later. Sooo a player had to learn how to fight, heal, etc.. on their own. Another issue is to do a dungeon etc, and do it properly, you should be on vent, or something similar. Granted this game is not so complex, that exact skill chains need to be performed at the exact right time, coordinating or as I say choreographing the run is important. In other MMO’s I have played, if I played a healer, it was always a female character. Why? If the group wipes, and your healer is male, they give you non stop grief. If you’re healer is female, they say “no problem, you did your best” etc.. Much less flack is given. LOL Players looking for someone to blame is a big turn off to many and it keeps them from grouping. I like the open world way of passive grouping in GW2. Just show up, fight, grab your loot and split. Or run with the pack. You don’t need to be grouped etc.. I like this feature a lot.

This thought occurs to me often. I would have to answer, I do. I play MMO’s like I’m playing a PC game. I prefer to solo. To me, it’s more challenging. It’s me against the game. I have nothing against grouping but I tend to lead by default, and that gets old. I tend to create a strong character, and know I can handle most of what we face, solo and that can lead to others feeling like dead weight. Sooooo I solo, less hassles. Not to mention I’m not looking for a date, nor do I want to hear everyone else’s problems. If I wanted reality I’d log off. LOL (I guess I don’t play well with others huh … ROFLMAO!)

I’m being honest. What do you think? Do YOU play MMO’s with a Single player game attitude?

Personal Story vs Living World

The living story is Anet’s attempt at easy to create content. It is meant for their ease in that they don’t need to create any storyline, or valid content. They just create an area, add arcade style gaming and push it out. They do not need to hire writers, voice talent, etc.. my final barometer on the LS came yesterday. A friend that has been pro game and always looks for the bright side, said she was losing interest and was playing less and less. She had no interest in jump puzzles and was looking for something different to play. The guild she was in imploded, and she was really disappointed in the game. I was shocked, she is always the one to shake me out of my moods when the game got on my nerves, now she is losing faith. I thoroughly believe Ncsoft cut the budget for GW2 to a bare minimum and Anet is scrambling to stay afloat.

Low level loot falling from high level mobs

In GW1 even your henchmen and heroes got part of the loot that dropped lol While the direct intent of loot scaling in gw1 was not to cause the trash loot from lower levels to be the result in drops, it surely was the cause. I reworded my title and OP to avoid confusion.

Evon Skyfyre.9673

If you played GW1, you are very familiar with this issue. For those that didn’t, this is something that happened after Anet implemented “Loot scaling”, supposedly to stop farming. Basically it meant if you faced the toughest, bad kitten in the game, max level, etc.. You had a very good chance of getting the lowest level of loot from the drops. You could complete a dungeon and get what was referred to as Trash loot, from a chest. Also you could receive desired loot (skin etc..) with horrible stats (picture an exotic skin with a level of 50 from a level 80 dungeon).

After some time and observation, it seems GW2 has this system in place as well. I fight level 80 bosses and get level 3 and 4 weapons.

Has anyone else seen this? I don’t run a lot of dungeons has anyone seen this in dungeons? Please don’t call it a bug, if it was a bug in GW1 they NEVER fixed it, and it’s still there.

I’d also like a break from forced jump puzzles(i won’t debate the symantics behind this but when meta’s either have me pick between jump puzzles or pvp i’m more inclined to do jump puzzles) because the jump puzzles are more stressful to me mostly because i don’t like doing platforming with a laptop keyboard setup.

I’m not a big fan of Arcade style games either. Hopefully the larger audience is, or it’s a huge waste of development time.

I think I finally put my finger on what is bothering me about GW2. It’s not like GW1. I guess I was hoping for more of the same with a better engine and combat. As is, GW2 feels like a completely new group of developers, writers etc.. were brought in, and they never played GW1.

As is, GW2 is (IMHO) as different from GW1 as it could be. They have no basis for comparison other them some canon. Friends talked about playing GW1 to get the achievements and to learn the story etc. I told them If you play GW1, you will not be happy with GW2. Now put the ropes down. My reasoning is easy. They are avid readers, and love an immersive storyline. GW1 had this, GW2 doesn’t and judging from interviews etc.. it won’t have one anytime soon.

In GW1 each expansion brought a new continent, new missions, new storyline, and 2 new professions (I have no idea if we could even hope for new professions, but ya never know) I’ve read there are no expansions planned, I’ve read not for a few years, etc.. How would you feel if they didn’t put out any expansions, ever?

I forced myself to visit the four winds, it was interesting for about half an hour then the newness wore off and it was a cross between boring and grind. The only part I liked was people triggering a champ, or the Aetherblade raids. But they were less enjoyable when players left and a few tried to fend them off. Sorry I would give this update a “D” must do better. I think the real reason for the LS is due to falling sales, low in game purchases, and players leaving, Anet has no budget for expansions. My worry is Ncsoft will grow tired of waiting and pull the plug.

I hope this really happens, but I won’t hold my breath. Nothing personal Regina, but I can’t count how many times a CSR has told us something to keep us quiet and then did the exact opposite. It’s not their fault, the devs and higher hang them out to dry.

Jemmi, true. Many will say how wonderful the game is publically, and privately despair and eventually stop playing without ever voicing their concerns. This is rampant in older players. They want to believe they picked a good game because to accept otherwise would mean they are not able to choose wisely and that is simply not acceptable. (yeah I’m old lol).

One thing that seems to go unmentioned is the vast number of players that have left already do not play any game for an extended period of time. Traditionally mmos had a monthly fee. So a percentage of players raced to the end as fast as possible to use up the free period that usually offered. Once it ended they leave. My circle of friends calls them locust. They arrive, play, feed, leave. And every MMO I’ve played will go to their grave trying to get them to stay. Why? They are the leaders of a group that will not fail. They knew every step, every turn, right down to the second when a certain skill or skills should be used. They could defeat any boss, any dungeon with basically a handful of friends and as many pug players as required. Once they had done this a few dozen times, they leave. They are the 1%r’s. They are gone from GW2, and for the most part they will not be back.

This leaves the casual players to make up the core of the day to day players. The players that can play a few hours a week, or less. They are more inclined to pay for items because they simply don’t have the time to achieve their goals without paying.

But again, all the mmos I’ve played have ignored them and gone after the hard core players. WOW is dying, stop copying them. Their time is done, even they know it. Why on earth would any rational being copy a premise that does not work anymore?

I don’t know if they will take what we’re saying here into consideration, they say they will. But they are creating the new LS content and getting it “Ironed out” then they promise to see how the community feels. Talk about putting the cart before the horse. They are breaking all the established principles in Online sales. I deal with this daily, you must, must, must, know what your target audience wants. Build a base, maintain that base as they will carry you through the lean times. Then build and draw in new customers. Anet has ignored all of the established premises. All I can say is I hope when they realize what has happened, and see GW2 has become the new joke of the mmo world they finally listen. (hey it took many years for SOE to live down the SWG/NGE stigma, SWTOR falling flat on it’s face helped too.). I’ve gotten to the place where I don’t believe anything game developers say anymore. It’s like rule #1 (Whovians will smile at this) the Doctor lies. So it seems do gaming companies. Anet might actually be able to compete with EA for the most hated company.

Please let me be wrong.

Wow, so I’m not so alone in my view. Granted this is a small cross section of the players, it still show how some players feel. I have tried and tried to get interested in the LS, but I just can’t. It really is too much to get it done so fast. I spent time in Southsun, and NO ONE ELSE WAS THERE! I asked in open chat, nothing.. I asked in lions arch, players said “dude that place is over and done, no one goes there..”. All these LS areas will suffer the same fate as well it seems.

The part that bothers me the most is Anet knows better. They know what works. Bioware had never made and mmo, they had an excuse for failing. Anet has no excuse, they just threw out all the things they learned and (sorry to say this guys) really blew it. They are confusing heavy traffic with success. When ESO and others launch, this game will suffer a huge hit, playerwise.

500 AP for GW1 Hall of Monuments Intended?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

Something to understand about the Hall of Monuments. When GW1 launched the “Eye of the North” expansion, a lot of emphasis was put on it being a bridge between GW1 and GW2. We were told we would be able to share our achievements with GW2 players, take them there, show the armor we achieved, the titles we earned, the companions that we travelled with, the Legendary items, armor, rare and exotic pets, as well as mini pets.

They didn’t deliver on any of these promises. We cannot take anyone there and the Eye is in ruins. No armor is there, no statues, nothing but a few ghosts. So when you say what we do and do not deserve, think about this. We bought the expansion, worked our collective butts off achieving the desired goals and all we got was a few pathetic weapon and armor skins, a few sad mini pets, and titles.

We did not receive what was promised. And some here think that 500 points is too much? Not in my book. If most of the complainers here were treated like this, you’d be hiring lawyers. We get 500 points and ridiculed.

Jemmi, thanks for your frankness. Elbegast, I’m in the same boat.

I really am struggling for reasons to login. I loved the game at first, now.. it feels like a grinding mmo. Which is the one thing they swore up and down they would not be. That coupled with my friends leaving, I’m just really at a loss for reasons. I started leveling a 3rd character that had fallen by the wayside. The story line is ok, but constantly needing to ask for help because the class is greatly underpowered is just pushing me away more. I hope for the sake of the Anet employees and their families this push for live content is a good investment and they see strong returns. Otherwise it’s a huge waste of time.

I’m guessing the frequency of the LS updates is what keeps people here. (Or else why are devs making their own lives so difficult?). So the question is if they changed and were brought out every 3 months, would you quit? Would you stop spending real money in game? Would you be so un happy? If you read the interviews about the LS the devs make it sound like without them the game would die. Is this true?

And another thought occurs, does their current schedule cause you to spend more real money in game, and play more?

Just curious.. I truly think every 2 weeks is nuts and quality will suffer. Your thoughts?

Why can we still not search by armor type?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

Search functions are the hardest on any web service, which essentially an mmo is. Many websites learned the hard way, the quickest way to be hit with a denial of service attack is by having a publically accessible search function. While GW2 is not at risk of this, (given you must login etc) adding more and more refinements to the search can result in increased lag. Many well intentioned players will use it properly, others will sit there hitting search over and over waiting for a specific item. This type of a more refined search would add to the load as well. The best way would be to add a sub category to the armor tables and let medium, heavy etc sit in it’s own sub slot and not require a refined search. BUT this would add to the load caused by placing items on the BLTC. They could add the type of armor to the name of each piece. But that is cumbersome too. No easy fix here I’m afraid.

Level cap: if increased, what are the impacts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Evon Skyfyre.9673

So I just finished obtaining my first full set of exotics on my necro and was going to start farming for another set with different stats for alternate builds but got to thinking if it was really worth it. If the level cap gets increased I would rather have several level 80 chars instead of 1 80 with every exotic set I can since that armor will be void after reaching a new cap. My main question is do you see a level cap increase in the future and how far off would you estimate it to be?

Some other questions would be:
A- How will they raise the level cap without kitten ing off all the players that worked forever for legendaries?
B- Same thing with ascended items…

One result will be if I’m still playing, I’ll quit. Experienced mmo players know this is the kiss of death. Nothing works right after, skills are either broken or useless, mobs are over powered. Every single quest or mission needs to be re worked and they simply won’t do it right.

Any plans to bring players back to Orr?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

With so many plans to rework existing areas so soon, I’m guessing the budget was axed for new development. Hope things pickup soon.

Dante, you read my mind. The current loot system is comparable to a frat boy on all fours getting spanked with a spiked paddle asking for more. It’s the war games syndrome. “Strange game. The only winning move is not to play.” More use from blue and green items.. O.o what the …

Anet, the loot system at launch was fine, who or whatever made you change it should lose all decision making power. If ESO launced today, we’d lose about 80% of the accomplished players which will cause raiding guilds to implode and make even more ghost towns pop up. You are using the same logic you did in gw1 after factions and look at all the ghost town camps you made. I keep trying to stay positive about gw2, then I read about the future plans and I just want to scream.

Bring back the 6, write more storyline quests and rollback the original loot system, or get ready to be another casualty on the mmo highway to boredom.

Want to know why players go through some areas quickly? They are experienced and can think on their feet. One or two runs and they have a pretty good idea how to beat the bosses etc, because they have played so many mmo’s and console, and single player games you will be hard pressed to create anything they haven’t seen before. It’s the nature of the beast. You can double and triple the difficulty, give the bosses immunity to conditions, crowd control, and so on, and all you’ll do is remove any chance for the other players to EVER see all your hard work. Why does every mmo miss this simple premise?

Guys the loot is imaginary, it doesn’t exist. Stop worrying about it, and to hell with the economy. Honestly if you can solve the economic problems of the world, great. Imaginary economies? No one cares. People are walking away from a game with no monthly fee, box sales are down, and you think making things harder will fix it?

TILT!

Gw1 people hung out, talked, teamed up and had fun. Then you started worrying about loot etc, in all my years of playing it, I never saw and IDS drop, or most of the other “rare loot”. I just shrugged it off, most didn’t. Instead they farmed and farmed, you added anti farm code. The battle raged on and on, and in the end you wasted so much time and money, imagine what you could have accomplished if you just stopped being silly and listened to all the players, they would have said they were bored out of their minds. Finally gw1 became an avatar driven chat. Which was so sad because you created a wonderful world and then took a really bad turn and never got back on the right track. And kitten it you’re doing it again. Einstein described insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Sound familiar?

For those wondering what “scaling” means, it means the larger the group the harder everything gets. Think Grenths temple on crack. Better start saving your gold, you’ll need it for all the repair bills.

Anet, make the game WE want to play, not the game YOU want to play. It’s just that easy.

GW2 unlikely to get expansions [Interview]

Another interview on this subject.

“In terms of box sales and microtransactions are still very strong, and of course we are preparing an expansion pack but in terms of when we will actually launch it, it’s something we are still monitoring… We are looking to the performance of the game and then we will decide what will be the best time to do the launch.”

Unfortunately developer ArenaNet doesn’t appear to have got the memo, with director Colin Johanson saying as recently as March that none were currently planned.

“Expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future, but we don’t have a timetable on it. We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as possibly can for the players that we’ve got.”

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-05-13-ncsoft-profits-up-yoy-but-down-on-last-quarter

I wonder how far in advance the “Living Story” content was created. We think it’s all brand new and constantly being created. It could have been created a year before launch and thus there would be no need for expansions. We’ll never know for sure I guess.

If you can bring back one thing from GW1

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

GW1 was a much more polished game. GW2 feels like it was pushed out early. I played GW1 from the beginning, and it was a world, and had a strong community. GW2 feels like a theme park. While it indeed has many new ways of doing things, it really seems like they forgot what worked.

Okay let me explain. In GW1 if you wanted to change your look, there was an NPC with a screen showing how you could look, if you liked it you could click and save or make notes and buy the tokens and go back to the design NPC. That is well thought out and polished. The current system is like a large troll sitting on a rock asking, “Hmmm you want to look different.. WHACK, Ha ha now you look different”. You have to buy a kit and hopefully the changes will look acceptable. Sure you could argue you could create a new character, try out looks make notes and then go buy the kit. Either would work (provided you have an open slot). But one is clearly more polished.

Another example, was wearing clothing, combined with armor, for a unique look and wear it everywhere in or out of battle. Here, you can’t get your town clothes dirty, so get your armor back on mister. This is just dumb. Why go to the extent of having the ability to wear normal clothing if you can only do it in town.

Another example is legendary weapon skins and armor skins. There is no sense of accomplishment when all you need is a credit card. Sure some work long in game to build up the gold. Most don’t. Remember BS is the most popular profession in game. Most just whip out the cc and viola they have a legendary skin. Which is what Anet/NcSoft hopes we all will do. Not bloody likely. Unless the flashy look of a new Inuyasha sword would blind the foe and make them easy to kill, or laugh so hard at how much we spent, that at least would be a reason. Again, Polish. There is none.

One last example. When you got to the end of the storyline mission and faced Abaddon in GW1, if you stopped at the end of the trail where you first get a glimpse of him and dance, he joined in, your group wipes and you saw “You just got served” flash across the screen. Polish… I really miss it.

What would I bring here from GW1….

Oh side note, all those waiting on a new expansion (Like factions etc in GW1) NcSoft has said they are waiting for the right time, and would rather focus on the living story. So translated, don’t hold your breath.

Make outfits wearable in combat like GW1 did. I miss going to war in my tuxedo!

Anet nerfed drops, this type of farming will get worse and worse. Anyone remember the anti-farm code in gw1? http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Anti-farm_code Lol it will happen here too. Personally, if people want to spend their life chasing imaginary items, go for it. Seems pretty sad to me..

Here is my Thief: Armor is all transmuted. Chest, leggings, and gloves are Vigorous leather, Boots are Surplus Lion Guard (karma at Stonehaven outpost in Wayfar), and the mask is a Vital Seekers. I transmuted 2 Krytan Pistols to use exotic stats, and 2 stock Usoku’s needles.

I have a theory, the reason this seems to happen when new content comes out could be server related because of the huge demand on the server (s) to download the new update/content. It’s possible they are using the same severs to facilitate the updates as they do for the game. Or it’s causing a bottleneck on their end. Either way it could be related. This would explain why it comes and goes.

Anet was like this in GW1. They ruined the loot so bad there was no reason to pick it up. Sorry to say, they are doing the same here. Most of the players I have talked to this week say they are just waiting for a new game and they’re gone. The high traffic here is not the result of a superior game, it’s the result of no monthly fee.

With every new update comes many players. Many, many players. I have no problems with playing in between the game updates, (new content etc), but.. when they occur, the screen goes to a weird color and sometimes is able to reset it’s self, but 9 times out of 10 it locks up and requires a hard start/ipl/off on. In the past I have reported this and I have done as requested. The suggested fixes do not help, but miraculously all my problems end when the server loads reduce. This has been the case over and over. I read many give the tired answer, “Your system is crap etc..” this is baloney. It runs fine, shows no problems with all tests suggested by Anet etc. I’ve talked with many in the industry (I’m an IT tech for a large company) and they agree it could be as simple as opening up more servers. Ordinarily I would wonder how a screen crash can be linked to server load but all evidence seems to point to them being related. Has anyone else noticed this happening when the server loads are high and very high?

But wait, there’s more.. I’ve read lately that Anet/NcSofts sales have dropped by 35% or more since the previous year. And I further read that the American player base counts for only 1% of their revenue, that Korea is their main market with a 64% share. By now you are saying “yeah so?”. Well if we only represent 1% of their market and they don’t open more servers, is the current state of the game as good as it will get (stability wise)?
I really hope not I used to recommend GW2 to everyone I could, I truly loved GW1. But now I just say I’m taking a break from gaming.. which is a lie but I won’t suggest it and have them be disappointed.

sigh

Added: Are the other servers physical servers or are they layers on the same server? I wonder because it’s been said gw2 uses a modified version of the gw1 engine, and gw1 had districts instead of more servers. If so, this could explain a connection between the issues many have and “server loads”.
