I do not think you can use instant portals anymore due to the need of getting the 3 or 4 checkpoints underway, they are now mandatory. So any portals you see do NOT port ppl up to the top instantly, as you will not get the chest , the completion or the mastery, at least this is what I heard. they arre usedtoport fllen ppl from the last checkpoints at best…

And as a mesmer I use portals anyways so I do have an added securityfeature while jumping, likewise I’d use the Wurm as necro to get back to a place if I’d thinkI’d falldown…. Actually I have 2 mesmers which arre mostly if not solely used to scale JP’s asI find it was more relaxed compared to rerunning long JP’s. I’ve seen ppl use portals and mimic almost since headstart, which is IMHO a perfect use of the mesmers abilities. else there’s also the teleport gun…. which can be used as well….

Hmmmm we (Mesmers) could chain to the checkpoints. That could be a lot of fun

I guess my main “issue” is not wanting to ask for help every time I do one. I miss going on my own in GW1 (okay it was with companions but they were light years better then most pugs. lol) Another MMO I play has finally conceded to the players wish to group when they want to, not because they logged in. Fingers crossed that Anet gets the memo someday. Still love the game, but LS/PS/BS is getting old.

Hi all,

I’m trying to get back to my LS missions and even with walkthroughs they are bringing me to the point of raging. But, I figure there are aspects I’m missing. I have looked at Walk throughs, and they seem simple enough. But it all falls apart there. I know some will say they were all so easy they solo’d them all. I applaud you and I’m not one of you.. LOL

My questions are..

1) Can I group with guildies to get them does easier? If so how does that work when I assume a persona (Caithe etc)?

2) Are all the LS missions arcade style, in that you must do things a set way, or fail?

3) Is the New Expansion the same and/or worse? (I understand some may love them this way, again I’m an old school MMORPG player, and I’m used to not needing help for everything. Some missions requiring groups is fine, but not all LOL)

Help..

Note to Anet. Would it kill you to have repair anvils in the instances? Honestly.

Okay, Obviously Leader is top, then Officer, Member, and so on. But, I’m confused about custom ranks/titles and their place in the pecking order?

If I make a custom title/rank, can a member that is able to recruit, edit that ranks’ permissions? Is a custom rank low man on the totem pole or does it depend on their permissions? i.e Member > Guild Mission Leader or would it be Guild Mission Leader > Member ?

Help..

Players interested in joining must have a Mesmer character, and be actively playing/levelling it. We ask that you rep when porting at events or jump puzzles, and above all else, be nice to each other and other players. We have 89+ members now. We just reached level 9, and moving up. The members are a fun bunch, they even started building a jump puzzle in the GH, and customizing the Pirate ship that is included with Gilded Hollow LOL. If this sounds like a guild you want to be a part of, contact me in game either by pm or email. We could be your, PORT in the storm

New Guild: Tyrian Mystical Tours [PORT]

Evon Skyfyre.9673

Hi all,

Just wanted to say hi and mention our new Mesmer Guild on HoD. We’re 32 strong and growing daily. A friendlier bunch I haven’t met. We hang out at jump puzzles, and are working on fluffing out our new Guild hall. In the future we’d like to host Jump Puzzle runs for those that are in need or just want some help and fun. But more on that later.

A special note. I have been asked sooooooo many times, why we (Mesmers) port and isn’t it cheating, etc.. I wanted to share my views on this. Many in game are under a time crunch, they can’t spend as much time as they like, others have trouble with jump puzzles and still others have real world physical limitations (handicaps). We help those in need of it. WE DO NOT CHARGE!. If players insist on tipping, it’s up to each guild member to decide. We do suggest if players feel we helped and want to say thank you, pay it forward. Help someone else. We’re not experts, we do better at some puzzles than others. But we do encourage fun and being silly. It’s contagious, even Mesmers not in our guild join in the silliness.

We hope you will to. Just look for [PORT] and we’ll have a smile waiting for you

If this is not the proper place for this, I apologize, and feel free to move or remove it.

Why not reuse old content during droughts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

Well the raid is the first thing I can think of that could be reused and is a significant piece of content. Be it open world, solo or small group content reconfiguring.
Reopening the Labyrinthine Cliffs is another.

Their ship was destroyed in Season 2 decimating the Zephyrites. I don’t think we will be going back. I did enjoy the festival, it was fun, but just saying it isn’t likely.

If they make it a historical instance, like LOTRO does that is all solved. Players just coming to the game are so left out of what has happened. The game now seems to focus on players that have been here and not on gathering new ones. I have the little thingy that shows a glimpse of the festival, when I put it down some ask where it is at. I explain and they usually reply, “Too bad looks cool..”

Festivals coming around would significantly help things..

Having a selection of these, such as QG which can be switched on would have made a lot of sense for keeping players occupied..

Unfortunately many of them were set up in LA, and anet decided to change LA dramatically..

I REALLY want the festival of the 4 winds back. I know I know the storyline blah blah blah.. WANT!!!!! Lotro solved this by having previous content in an instanced format, and explained before you entered it was the past, etc..

Such a simple solution.. Plus it’s just sitting there..

Some may think this silly, some may roll their eyes, and some, may smile and agree.

Gamers enter a world, to escape the everyday. To spend time, to make new friends, or to visit with old ones. They are excited, and expectant, they wonder and they guess. What will happen, will there be Dragons? Monsters? Damsels? Wizards, Witches, treasures untold, hardships unnumbered? Will they succeed, will they fail? Will there be adventure? Will Kings beg their aid, will they visit other realms, meet new creatures, like themselves walking that path in a magical world, together.

Gaming developers, are given the arduous task of creating and maintaining that world. They are, in effect the caretakers of our dreams. While we fight on and curse our misfortune, they watch from above, attempting, to maintain a balance. They know if they flood a plain they may drain an ocean. If they level a mountain what horrors will spring forth. Their monsters however, are very real. They have strange names and wear many faces. Balance, Bandwidth, Errors and more. Risk vs reward, they are forced to endure. They cannot do simply as they please, for they also must strive to fulfill and appease. Us.. Their ever hungry, and demanding citizens of the world they created. They glimpse a realm of deities, they see the glimmer of what it must be like, to sit atop Olympus, and know.. they will never please and appease all. They will never fulfill every wish. And what of their own? What about their own hopes and dreams? What about the world they long to explore? Do they rail against the endless span of time and demand their own vision? Or do they buckle and try to fulfill ours?

Surely any such deity would have bad days. Surely they must have doubts. What of budgets and spreadsheets, storyline and more? Do they simply pluck an idea from a magic tree and cast it’s wisdom onto their subjects below? Or is it ripped from within? Torn screaming and wailing, formless and unyielding, beaten and forged, polished and straightened, only to mask blemishes, and flaws, that do not reveal themselves until they break and cause our world to fall, and crumble. All the while these subjects whom only know they want and desire, cry out for mercy, or demand calm be restored, Such creators seek to fill all of our needs, nothing more. An Ominous task to be sure. And sadly all to often, a thankless one.

Do we gather laurel leaves and scatter them in their name? No, we reward their efforts with scorn and mockery, impatience and distrust. We request, no demand, they give us all that we ask, nothing more, nothing less, as I said, an Ominous task.

Many realms have I walked through, some continue and some do not. I’ve encountered many souls in my journeys, some that have and some that have not. I wish I could say my path is filled with glory, and righteous deeds, sadly all to often it was paved in my own desire and greed. I tried in my way, to help the path be less harsh, to warm the frozen walkways, to drain every foul marsh. But all I did with any frequency, is rail at the heavens and ask why me. Why were my abilities taken from me? My once strong weapon, now tarnished and dull, no longer does it drive forth the monsters, no longer will it cull, any that dare stand and oppose me, fools they would have been, but we’re no longer gods, we now are but men.

As the path I take widens there are choices I must make, I ponder and wonder which road will I take? One thing is certain, I know not what will come, I know not what wonders, or deeds there are to be done. What unending hardships and glorious battles are there to be suffered and won? Will I be alone or with new companions, who’ll walk along with me, to lighten my journey, it will then be us, no longer just me.

Each of your memories I’ll gratefully hold in my heart, all our triumphs and failures right from the start. I won’t languish, I will instead, smile and take up my pack, a long journey waits ahead. By now some are asking will we meet again? You just never know.. Until then my friends.

With the new LS system will you binge play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

I’m choosing to binge, because after almost two years of the base game I’ve essentially tired myself of the main content and with the LS format I’d essentially consume the few hours of new content and then wait again for two weeks which isn’t really ideal for me. So, instead, I’m planning on hoarding chapters of the season 2 until there’s plenty of new stuff to do and then hopefully get back into the game where it will feel fresh to me. Since there are no plans for any expansion packs I’m hoping that doing this will give the expansion pack feel once there are a decent number of chapters saved up to play at a later date. In the mean time I’m doing other things and indulging in another MMO while season 2 trickles out.

I hear ya, and so am I (another mmo).

With the new LS system will you binge play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

My reason for choosing binge is when I get to a saturation point, and find more wrong then right with a game, or I dislike the skill changes etc.. I split. When/If I come back later, I’ve forgotten how everything worked and I do not notice the changes.

To that premise I have now added the binge choice as well. I think it will work. A good friend is my barometer. If she has already left or is tired of my complaining I know, it’s time to go and play something else. So logging in, long enough to update and then leaving should be painless enough. Provided the content can be completed solo when I come back.

We now live in a society where we can watch a single episode of our favorite show each week or wait a while and watch several. It’s called Binge watching. So will you play each new LS chapter as it’s released, or login and build up several and binge play?

What if there was no loot at all?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

I guess my premise is really, there would be no more argument about rare drops. There would be no drops, rare or otherwise. Save tokens that were bound. Binding them, either soulbound or acct, removes gold selling as well. It removes inflationary selling, playing the market as it were, …and I just answered my own question because the proposed system would only work if they kept a constant flow of compelling content, which is not going to happen. Never mind, question asked and answered lol The current system is in place to try and keep us distracted so we forget how mind numbingly bored we really are.

Side note: Remember playing pc games, and we got a new edition/version/chapter, played it thru and moved to the next game, to keep busy while a new game or chapter is created? Seems we still do that, but we go from mmo to mmo, and bounce back and forth. LOL

Evon Skyfyre.9673

What if there were only tokens dropping and we could turn them in when we had the desired amount, and obtain our shiny piece of imaginary ….? I’ve wondered about this for a very long time. I think I’d be fine with it. (I also thought I’d like no Trinity and was wrong. Me personally, I like being a tank. But that is another discussion).

So, I ask, would you play a game with no loot drops other than tokens and a merchant setup to turn them in at, for weapons, armor, etc? Would you play? Has an MMO tried this (100% not just some areas or rep items) and been successful or not?

Computers cannot randomize, they use a peusdo randomizing routine. Currently the “best” uses atmospheric noise to determine a seed number. But it still is not true randomizing. Why? Random is a concept, once you write code to emmulate it, the event is no longer random. QED.

Awfully non sequitur and pedantic of you. I could give a dissertation on psuedo-random number generation (I have, actually), a discuss the merits of KISS versus the Marsenne Twister, or the use of true stochastic sources in quantum computers, but none of that is relevant to this thread.

The algorithm is a non-issue, unless they’re using a short-period, repeating algebraic or multiplicative algorithm with a non-stochastic seed (say, the character name). If they are being so simplistic, that lends credence to folk who think their character name reflects “luck.” I assume ANet is using a reasonable yet simple (for speed) randomizer.

I could post papers and statistical studies, but that would further drag this discussion off topic.

On topic: The randomizer used is important, but I believe the problem lies in their APPLICATION of that randomizer. The problem is in usage, not algorithm.

I can sum up my thoughts on this in two ways, a dissertation is either ver batum regurgitation or the restating and often mis quoting of reputed facts. At best speculation at worse, hyperbole. (Unless you yourself do ALL the work, develop ALL theories and document all results, you are at the mercy of someone elses work, or lack there of.)

To that end, here is a picture of a rabbit with a pancake on his head. Which is indeed factual, and makes more sense than this entire argument. RNG’s will be used until the lawmakers say otherwise. Case closed.. This kangaroo court is adjourned.

Evon Skyfyre.9673

I have been a developer on AAA titles and specifically, MMOs. This article is less about criticizing ANet and more about them making the game more fun.

RNG is bad for MMOs. Here’s why:

1) RNG as implemented fosters player rancor.
I post that I haven’t found an item after opening 100 chest, someone else post they found it in the 2nd chest and they don’t see a problem.

2) RNG as implemented isn’t fair.
Nope, life ain’t fair. GW2 is not life, it is a game. It is entertainment. Frustration is not fun.

3) RNG as implemented isn’t fun.
Putting a desirable item behind RNG is a recipe for making people frustrated. Something that always drops is meaningless; something that never drops causes frustration. A balance must be struck.

4) RNG as implemented is illogical.
People who want the item do not get it. People who don’t want the item do. Since items cannot be sold in the trading post, this again creates frustration.

GW2 would be a better game and more fun if:

1) Allow rare drops to be sold. Remove account binding.

2) Improve the chance of a rare item drop the more a person tries to get it. I suspect ANet will say they can’t do this due to “technical limitations”.

3) Sell rare drops in the trading post for gems. People with money can buy the drop; people who have oodles of time/will can hunt for it. Please don’t hypocritically say rare things should be special, and then let people buy/sell “legendaries”.
RNG is fun and entertaining.

Excessive RNG is bad and frustrates players. Frustrated players don’t recommend the game and don’t spend money in the store.

Computers cannot randomize, they use a peusdo randomizing routine. Currently the “best” uses atmospheric noise to determine a seed number. But it still is not true randomizing. Why? Random is a concept, once you write code to emmulate it, the event is no longer random. QED.

That said RNG’s are very faulty and prone to work improperly. Some uses are easily manipulated and easily over worked. They will be the main cause imho for the demise of online games that exist based on microtranactions. In short, once the laws catch up with online games I feel fairly safe in saying the use of RNG’s as a money maker will be stopped, or at the very least governed by existing gambling laws.

It really seems like they don’t care at all, what we want. They smile, they make jokes in videos, and they do as they please. It’s up to us as players, to decide. Do we take it and go on not enjoying the game, or do we go? I’m putting GW2 on a shelf, my circle of friends have gone back to another MMO we played previously. I hope things get better here.

GW1 = more build diversity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Evon Skyfyre.9673

Evon Skyfyre.9673

Many here are swearing the game is diverse and has so much depth. Besides GW1, what other mmo’s have they played? Seriously played. Have they ever done a dungeon crawl that took hours to complete, or had lockouts so you could take several days to complete it? Those are hard core games, where skills require thought, and combinations, etc are important. Where certain builds are crucial. In comparison, GW2 is an extremely casual game, and that is fine. I just find it interesting how players new to mmo’s think this game is more than it is.

Raids in most games are artificially hard based on the fact that you don’t have the gear requirement to complete them right away. It’s just a numbers game.

I played Rift. I had three stupid buttons I hit, because all my useful skills were macroed onto three keys. The content that came out was jumping through hoops complex. The only thing complex about it was getting people to be in the same page. The actual content wasn’t that hard.

The fact is, if you had less than a certain amount of focus as a spell caster, you couldn’t do damage to the creatures at all. You needed the gear to up your focus. There was zero skill in it. It was about perservering until enough gear dropped with enough focus so you could damage stuff.

That’s not depth, and that’s not fun for me. This game has more depth than that. Not depth in being a trained monkey repeating the same thing over and over till you could do it in your sleep.

Raids and dungeons in other games are one of the reasons I was looking forward to Guild Wars 2. They give the illusion of complexity when in reality, it’s just a giant con.

Rift? Lol

I’ve also played Lotro, DDO, WoW, Eve, Perfect World, TSW and a few others. I picked the first example I can think of. Nice try.

Sorry, you’re just the first person I’ve seen admit they played it.

Rift? Lol

Many people are focusing on " The meta" or " Optimal builds". The issue for me is… what if I want build divercity that doesn’t follow the garden path of those that Theorycrafted before me?

Some say " Gw2, has x number of “optimal” builds and Guild Wars has y number of “optimal” builds, and since they are close…they are each as diverse."

Some say " Guild Wars made it so it was too easy to make sub-par builds"

They do have points. The issue for me is, I don’t hunt down "optimal " builds. I Like to Theorycraft. I enjoy playing builds that are fun. Or Builds that focus on a particular style of gameplay.

Guild Wars allowed me to do that, since Guild Wars gave me tools that if i searched I would find weird and unique synergies between 2 or 3 skills.

Can you do that in Gw2? I am sure you can. Can you do it as well as in Guild Wars? Many may debate that they can. But If you have an 8 color box of crayons….. and a 64 color box of crayons… one gives yoiu more divercity than the other….even if 16 of the 64 are colors YOU might not touch with a 10 foot pole…it’s always best to be given the option to select your palette for yourself.

Guild Wars had more colors.

Yep Guild Wars did have more skills. And for a guy who likes and centers around Build Wars, it was definitely a superior game.

I think you’ll find that it was less popular than it would have been because of that focus. Too hard for too many people.

I’m like you. I loved the building aspect of that game. But that was the ENTIRE game. It was linear. It was pathed. You couldn’t step over a log you had to turn around and go back. The entire game was the builds.

Because that was the focus of the game, that was what you got.

This game doesn’t have as much build diversity as that game. And if that’s mostly what you care about, you won’t like this game as much.

Guild Wars 2 has a different focus…intentionally.

The problem is… Guild Wars is still around, and there are plenty of people that play it, I among them. Gw2 seems to be petering out.

Now you can say that Gw2 has a different focus …intentionally, and that is clear.

That is not the issue, the issue is… that many players feel the game took a wrong turn.
Many will say " this is not the game for you." And maybe they may be right. But Anet has shown that they are not above changing direction. The way they now have players opening up traits by completing content shows they are taking a page from Guild Wars playbook.

It may be the execution may be off, but if i remember something about Anet it is, they do not have a problem saying to themselves." Maybe we can do this in a new way, a better way."

So is the game as it is, the game I might wish it to be? No. But does that means I have given up that Anet may bring some of what made Guild wars great to this game?

I’m still here.

Lastly. I disagree that Guild Wars would have been a better game by making the game simpler. I feel that it appealed to players that liked playing Build wars, and have no problem playing Build wars year after year after year. Log into Build Wars sometime, you’ll see plenty of people still playing with their builds, their heroes builds, and their mercenary’s builds.

You can argue that it would appeal to more casual gamers. But is that always a good thing? It makes the game simpler. But is that always the right way to go?

" If it is more casual friendly it will be more popular" is not always true. Sometimes challenge keeps and retains players. Make it too casual friendly, and it becomes shallow. And you retain less players than if you catered to a Little more Hardcore.

This is Not Black and white. There are not " Super – casuals" and “super-hardcore.” turning to one doesn’t always mean abandoning the other. All of us fall somewhere in the middle.

So to answer your question….No. I do Not think that simplifying Guild wars so it would have been more casual friendly would have made it better, or even more popular.

Well said, and let me add, guild wars must still be a viable revenue stream or it would have ended. My one fear is rather than admit they were wrong and guild wars 2 should be more like guild wars 1, they will close guild wars 1, in hopes of forcing players to play gw2.

I remember in gw1 as a necro, using barbed signet to start the mob bleeding, casting enfeebling blood to reduce their outgoing damage by 60% if bleeding and spread poison I think, and finishing with rotting flesh to spread disease. By then they had about -4 degen, and their health was falling fast. Or they one shotted our group. There are no combos in gw2 like this, and there won’t be either. That type of combo required thought to realise and create, and timing and a good group of players to execute. All while avoiding attacks that would interupt and delay casting. My mesmer could make a mob stutter with interupts and degens as cc. My ele would hit glyph of sacrifice to reduce casting time on next spell, meteor shower to knock down and interupt a mob and firestorm to dps. Hence being called a nuker. If you missed a skill or were interupted your group wiped.

It was too work intensive for the Devs to maintain skill balance. Yep that was the reason given. I was like “Seriously?” If my development team admitted that and wanted to dumb the game down there would have been alot of job openings. They may as well have told me, “We can’t do the job sorry..”

I’m waiting for them to announce console versions of Gw2. I’m used to MMO’s that require a lot more thought and planning.

What an absolutely massive over-simplification of their design decisions….thanks for sharing your insight into building an MMO…what’s the name of yours again?

Wow, swtor, etc they all face the same challenges. Even the original founder of Anet ( Jeff Strain) was from Wow. In any job, either you’re up to the task or not. If not, admit it and ask for help. It’s the first sign of wisdom. I haven’t written gaming code, but I’ve tested them and watched them evolve as a beta tester longer than I care to admit. So that gives me a bit of room to critque a game.

Added:

In closing, players voicing their concerns and complaints can only help. Like Chef Ramsay says “I don’t give a …. about compliments and people blowing smoke up my …, I only want to hear the complaints”

The main problem I have with either game (GW1, GW2) is they are or became nothing more than an avatar driven chat program. Each day I see the same names in the same cities. They stand around talking until dinner, then come back after, and talk until thier shows come on. While this in itself is not a problem and will happen anytime people are found in groups, when new players ask for help.. crickets. So Anet dumbs down the game. In GW1 we didn’t need help, we could get henchman and/or heroes (npc that travelled with you, fought for you, healed you etc..). Now to befair GW1 was NOT an MMORPG. It was/is 100% instanced. There is no openworld. When my group left a camp or city, if you weren’t grouped with me, you didn’t exist, you couldn’t come to my aid unless I started over, and returned to camp.

That said is probably why Anet is learning as they go. They haven’t any real experience with open world (unless they hire some new teams with experience). So many game mechanics in GW2 seem like GW1 in that they require a small group, etc.. but they are facing a raid like setting. I think they are realizing many of the features they offer, that seem innovative, aren’t used by established games because they are too problematic. So again Anet dumbs down the game. Case in point, the new LS launched and an hour or so later, people are done. And back playing something else. No profit, no renewed enthusiasm, just a momentary cure for boredom. How can they continue like this?

I still remember theory crafting an ideal Jade Knight (or whatever were they called) Hard Mode solo (with one hero) farming build.
I came up with extremely gimmicky and Mo/Me build with Famine R/Mo Bonder Hero.
Was fun to play even though it was far from the most efficient build.
It was like playing a MTG/YGO. Theory crafting, analyzing, etc.

In GW2?

I miss running folks around, my assassin was a lot of fun.

Wonder when they will lock this? LOL

You forgot to also say NO EFFORT as well when you can just set to auto-fire.

Indeed, very very true.
