You know, something new gets added to the mix and heaven forbid we adapt tactics and look for any number of counters. LB #2 is not an insta-win button, just a better skill now.
I like how Irxallis explains it in the following video -

well of course cond removal would suck you can always clean it with Healing spring x.x but yea its not very viable against condition build save for the fact that what cannot see you cannot hit you so you can prety much out time the conditions out and prevent overstacking
Would Sigils of Generosity or Purity on the LB give you enough condi clear cover? Granted you need enough crit to proc it, but after watching the Koroshi vs Floppy duel it appeard to me to work quite well.

You know, I joined a group in WvW the other day and the first question was, “Is ranger your main?” I explained that I had leveled my ranger in WvW since the game came out. Their response, “Good, glad you not a flavor of the month ”
We proceeded to wreck havoc on the other worlds. <insert menacing grin>

Wow! Now that’s some skill man…that’s some skill.

Here is the string of the conversation:
Blude: Chris when is the team getting around to looking at this or at the very least acknowlegding this? https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Ranger-Frost-Spirit-bugged-w-maths/first#post4408115
.
Malkavian: I honestly doubt they would give a a timeframe on when your concern will be addressed. Although I have noticed bug fixes happening daily since the feature patch was installed so I think they would get to it eventually. But don’t take my word for it.
.
Blude: Not really asking for a time frame. Just asking for some “communication with you” in the bug forum. As I said a simple ‘yes we know’ and it’s on our to do list would be be fine. But totally ignoring it —not so fine.
.
Chris Whiteside: Hi Blude, We are not ignoring it all. We are aware and will update Monday. Thanks for raising it to my attention. Chris

Long Bow too stronk 2000 Range +
Too much dps ANET pls nerf
Hey OP, you forgot that we can: bench press two bears at once, walk on water, shark pets dedicate a week to us, Lyssa calls us for dates, we swim after eating, Ascalon ghosts sit around fires and tell stories about us, we teach Krytan drake hounds to bark in Canthan, we talk about fight club, we grant genies 3 wishes and only a ranger has swum across the Crystal Desert.

Wait, wait! I get it now. The OP wants us to tell him how to counter the changes. See they make a post saying RANGER OP! or rapid-fire is over-powered, then we rebut by explaining how to counter it. Everybody who reads it takes notes then logs on to exact vengeance.
oh…sneaky OP, really sneaky.
See you in Tyria.
Nice vid but based on those fight and a few of my own I would not qualify it as overpowered. You still had to use terrain, retreat to heal, create distance and you had to wait to use rapid fire at the appropriate time. In addition, your opponents dodge a few shots in there so they were figuring out they could mitigate the damage. Rapid Fire didn’t give you a “win button” just because it shot faster, it just gave you a better skill to use.

i hate it to see that SUDDENLY all noobs dig out their dusty rangers, they quitted months ago because they were soooo underpowered and useless. and now? rangers…rangers everywhere…in pvp of course.
The happy lil hunters who run around, dont even want to 1v1, just shoot from far away or from above in others 1v1 and feel like a boss.
I hate all “rangers” who think they are a ranger just because they have one they dig out when the ranger seems to get the new op class. A short look back at old BM times – times when every 2nd player was a ranger.
Enjoy it all wanna-be-rangers. Enjoy it until the other classes know how the average comeback hunter plays and reflect ur RF and u have no plan wherefrom the dmg comes.
But at all its nice to see a freekill when i see another power ranger who thinks he is a pro and i nuke them with a power build i play for weeks or months.greetz

The first most common reactions to change are shock, denial, anger with some resistance mixed in. It will take them some time to get use to adjusting their tactics and countering.

It’s no overpowered and most people are feeling the hurt now because there is a spike in “fair weather” rangers. Give it a few weeks for the shiny to wear off and those who have loved ranger will still be there loving it and those complaining about LB will have figured out the appropriate skill counters.
All that being said, it feels good to snipe someone from range.
See you in Tyria.
My first level 80 was a ranger and I have not regretted it. I still have fun on my asura, with a slingshot skin on the short bow no less. Just remember, anybody can play a ranger but only the dedicated can play a ranger well.
See you in Tyria.
and how does that work for you against a good thief or warrior?
Watch this guy, he does pretty well for himself.

LB ranger is seriously underplayed skillfully in WvW.
Get a group of three well skilled LB rangers together and see the amount of ranged pain they can cause.
See you in Tyria.
Funny thing is I disliked the GW1 ranger so I had no desire to play one in GW2. After trying all the other classes and just couldn’t settle. I eventually tried a sylvari ranger…and that lasted a whole seven levels.
So, around December 2012, on a whim, I made an Asura ranger with a big pink moa named Flamingo Rex. What was suppose to be a half-hearted joke turned into amazing fun. I then found out about Krytan Drake Hounds and ran my little level 6 Asura from Rata Sum, to LA, to Divinities Reach, then all the way to Beetleton to tame one. For some reason, me running around with my pet brought out the explorer instinct in me. Since then Zonian has been my main.
In addition, my daughter wanted to make a character, so she made a human ranger. Funny thing, I find myself playing it often, enjoying the leveling experience again. They are not without their faults (cough…pet AI) but I still enjoy them greatly. Rangers are just a fun class.
See you in Tyria.
I’m seeing Rangers running with 3+ pets, going invis like thieves and with ridiculous dps. Just give them Ele powers next, right?
Way too much buff recently to Rangers.
See you in Tyria.
The reason that some people see Longbow as powerful is because longbow is countered very different from other professions.
On any other class, the answer to taking massive burst is run away from them vs. a ranger the answer to taking massive burst is to charge them.
Shhh! Current ignorance levels of tactics are working toward the ranger’s advantage.

Do not use LB#4 on cooldown!
Only use when:
Creating distance from an enemy.
Knocking-off rezes or stomps.
Disrupting formations. (Wolf fear is better for this but, hey.)
Having multiple rangers in WvW knocking enemies around like pinball is amusing just once. Control, and they will love you.

The meta is not an answer, it is what the masses claim to be the truth regardless of the facts at hand.
Do we live in a dictatorship? Last time i checked, we had a democracy. Democracy means, simply put, power to the masses. So if the masses decide that the ranger is too weak, they may be not that far off track as you may think.
If you’re in the USA you live in a Constitutional Republic, not a pure democracy.
Big difference.
See you in Tyria.
twhite, What form of PvE are you talking about: open world, dungeons, speed runs, world events/bosses?
Open world PvE you can kill anything with LB and a cat/bird before it get near you, so in that sense we rock it hard. In dungeons melee tends to be best but if your with a group of friends that do not care what you run then do whatever and we all are good at whatever. If you are with a PUG or speed group you need to be melee and bring frost spirit and spotter. Both of which offer huge damage increases to the group.
Ranger DPS is good but you have to pay attention because we have sword AA, which keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time, and we have a pet so you are playing two toons for the most part.
See you in Tyria.
In your set up your attack is 2,643 but very little crit chance or increase above base crit damage. However, if you go full zerk gear you will have 2,578 attack but a 37% chance to crit, doing over 200% more damage on crit. (bloodlust stacks not included)
In other words, if you going for BIG damage you should not use soldiers, which is more survival oriented, but you should use berzerkers, which better supports crit & crit damage increase.

Offhand –
Offhand axe’s is more power based. Path of Scars hits like a truck(x2 possibly), pulls and is a projectile finisher. It can actually hit three times. This is not my video, but I find it completely hilarious.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-cVWh3bKt4
SMACK! That Path of Scars laid the karka out flat! Great vid. Thanks.
See you in Tyria.
These are general statements, not absolute truths. You can use a weapon any way you want, now whether you are using it effectively is a different discussion.
Main Hand –
Great Sword is used primarily in power builds. It has an evade on auto attack, a burst attack with mauls. GS 3 is a gap closer or escape and leap finisher. 4 is a block or a cripple and 5 stuns/dazes.
Sword has a very fast attack, a cripple built into the auto-attack, provides might to your pet, poisons and has a leap finisher. The sword can be used in power and condi specs. Rangers are divided on the auto attack sequence since it makes dodging more difficult. Turning off auto-attack can over come the issue along with increased familiarity with the mechanics.
Long Bow is the long range weapon with damage based in distance. It tends to be a power based weapon. It can provide stealth, knockback, aoe cripple, vulnerability and two projectile finishers.
Short Bow is more a skirmishing weapon with a fast rate of fire but shorter range. It can be used for power or condi specs. It can apply poison, cripple, bleeds and stun/daze. It has three projectile finishers.
Axe is a ranged weapon some where between power and condi. It hits three targets (if present), provides a bleed and chill.
Offhand –
Offhand axe’s is more power based. Path of Scars hits like a truck(x2 possibly), pulls and is a projectile finisher. The second skill provides, retaliation, vulnerability, reflect and whirl combo.
Dagger provides a poisoning evade, and a ranged bleed and cripple.
Torch provides ranged burning and a fire field.
Warhorn makes opponents hate Hitchkitten’s movie The Birds and provides fury, might, swiftness and is a blast finisher.

In what environment are you looking at PvP, WvW oe PvE?
I ask because there are different builds for each of these areas of play and they will affect you differently. For example, a dungeon max DPS build is different than a PvP zerk build.
See you in Tyria.
A couple of combos I use:
WvW/PvP Zerked out (60260)- Air & Nulification, Air & Torment. For Nasty Burst – Air & Fire, Air & Intelligence (for intel you need RtW).
I’ve seen a few posts state Ice is great for kiting, but I have not used it yet.
An additional question: Anyone experienced with the up time on Strength? If coupled with +might duration runes I imagine we could keep a few stacks constantly rolling.
See you in Tyria.
Nice build. It’s nice to see Skirmishing being taken for things other than bow skill reduction and traps. I’ll queue up later and try this out.
Any feeling on how well Strider’s Defense is working out? I love locking down with Moment of Clarity so I’m trying to weigh one trait versus another.
See you in Tyria.
Apologize for the tangent but you know what would be interesting, if Poison Master changed all the ranger’s poison applications (Sw#3, Sb#2, dagger, trap, etc) to torment application.
Talk about having to choose between healing reduction/damage and movement control/damage. Granted a pet could cover the poison so the torment application could not be too high. But really, the toxic alliance sylvari rangers had it, why not us eh?
See you in Tyria.
This will be very nasty with any condi bunker build since the damage should scale of player stats.
I’m curious. Anyone know the range of the sixth effect? For instance, if you miss some one with Entangle due to range or the 5 cap, will they still get hit with Bleeding, Torment, and Poison?
Is the sixth effect capped at 5 also? Probably…hmmm
Can the the sixth skill be evaded? I imagine it can but not 100% sure.
See you in Tyria.
Looonnngggggg video.
Well, I’m curious to see your build if you’re amenable to sharing it.
See you in Tyria.
Loaf of Saffron Bread aka Anti-Hammer Train Bread
Incoming damage reduced by 20% while stunned, knocked down, or knocked back.
-20% condition duration
+10 Experience from kills.

It still surprises me how many people get caught up on the word “rifle”. We clearly wield a shotgun, even the skill icons show it.
May I be so bold as to say, “Not shotgun but hand cannon.” Every shot animation looks like the engineer is just trying to hold on to the darn and not let it fly out of their hands.
I love it.

Why? Because we are Anvil Rock. Welcome to WvW!

I’ve been on AR since beta and have lived through the eternal AR/BP EBay campaign, the mass guild exodus, the plummet, the rebuild and now the rise back up. It has been awesome to see the sheer tenacity this server has in it WvW players. We have always given one heck of a fight and the small teams (5 to 10) are just amazing.
Transfer, you won’t regret it.
You sir win the internet today
Thank you kindly. And a shout out to you and TBT. You guys always take in the other guild roamers and lead us to insane zerg busting, large scale fights and some of the craziest SM caps ever. Greatly appreciate that.

FEAR THE BEAR!!!
Notice the only thing to defeat the bear are not the warriors, but another bear.
See you in Tyria.
Bill Freist, ANet game-play programmer, dropped by an optimization thread to discuss causes and fixes to skill lag. He specifically brought up Ranger Pet commands.
“Though, not all “Skill Lag” scenarios are a product of the bullet points stated above. There are other causes of input delay, and a good example of this would be Ranger Pets. I’m sure plenty of you agree that their responsiveness has been arguably, well, next to none. I recently spent time working on improving the interaction Rangers have with their Pet using the Command Bar. I’d love to hear your feedback on this once it ships. Issues like this are something I definitely plan to continue improving upon.”
No specific date given but good news is they are working it and will be looking for feedback. Should be interesting.

BEAR ATTACK! FEAR IT!
See you in Tyria.
I am really enjoying this thread especially this part, “All of the sudden big fat norn guy turn into HUGE NORN BEAR at this point I am in terror…”
You folks have helped make my day a good one.
P.S. Just wait until the ranger starts shooting bears at you. Bearbow on steriods!

Prysin – Thank you for the feedback.
I am still experimenting with the build so I will take your suggestions and work with them.
I did initially looked at the lemon grass + Melandru runes and you are correct they are powerful together. I went with Forge runes for the increased protection duration and burning (it compliments the spirits well). I have discovered a weakness: the only time the protection buff drops is when the spirit dies. Twenty seconds is a long time.
Again, appreciate the feedback.

Good point AWGE. We’ll see what happens and I will keep that in mind.

I have no idea why I’m in build theory mode, but my mind has been in “curious” mode; nevertheless, here is something else I’m enjoying so I wanted to share it.
Sol posted a few PvP builds (found here – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/SPvP-Rise-Rangers-Video) and I tried them out and found them to be really enjoyable to play and offered great team support. I got to thinking that the same benefits could translate well for 5 to 10 man WvW groups. So I went about converting the spirit build to WvW use. Here is what I have so far – http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQNAV8YjEVl1dV+Vg2BglCBDs9ITNx0po0TP4XrH-jUyA4MBZaBMFKQpwioxWgLiGruBTjuoaFLgHpIa1A-w
NOTE: This is new and I’m still testing it in WvW but so far the results are promising.
Traits – 20/0/30/20/0 I used the same traits for the same reasons Sol points out in his post. Piercing Arrows overcomes body blocks, damages and spreads conditions to all who get pierced. Wilderness Survival line is, well, where all the big survival traits are. Nature magic allows higher proc rate for burning & protection and having two roaming shields doesn’t hurt.
Weapons – Carrion. Right now I’m us SB and SW/dagger but I’m going to try LB instead of SB and see what happens. SB’s quick fire rate helps keep up protection and burn procs. LB has the range and I’m interested to see how barrage is affect by Sun Spirit. Either way I’m just curious. I also want to weigh warhorn vs dagger and see what works best.
Aarmor – Carrion. Why? Power, vitality and conditions. Power and conditions allow to me inflict good physical and condition damage. The extra vitality is to create a bigger health pool to offset the Ranger’s limited condi cleansing and those moments where I get bombed. I’ll address toughness in the runes section. For trinkets I also use Carrion but with Dire mixed in. In the link I’ve used exotic trinkets but they can be traded out for ascended piece as they are acquired. However, please realize there MAY NOT be ascended carrion trinkets. I couldn’t find any on the vendor but I could have just missed them in the long list. If anyone can confirm or deny this please let us know. From what I did see, you’ll have to use a Dire+Rabid, pure Rabid or Apothecary +Rabid stats. Essentially, dire gives more vitality, apothecary gives more healing, pure Rabid more precision. Mix and match to your flavor.
Runes – If you can get Runes of the Forge use them. Faux Sheaux has addressed the synergies between spirit builds and these runes in previous threads so I’ll just summarize – The bonus synergizes well with the additional toughness and increases in both burn and protection. The real shining part is the 6th bonus. At 50% health you gain protection for 10 sec and burn all nearby foes. They are purchasable from the dungeon “Caudecus’s Manor”. If you can’t get these, runes of the earth are an acceptable replacement for the protection duration increase and toughness, but that’s about it. Maybe 4 earth and two grove runes for 35% protection increase might work to but I haven’t tried it.
Skills –Stone Spirit provides you with protection. Add to it Companion’s Defense, Vigorous Renewal and the runes protection duration increase and you have near constant protection. Sun spirit to spread burning around for all to enjoy. Sig of Renewal for condi cleanse. For the elite, I bring Spirit of Nature or Entangle depending on the situation. Oh, and when I run around I have SoH then swap before fight or I just ride all the speed boost fields.
Sigils-put what you want. If there are better suggestions I am open to them.
Food, etc. – I haven’t decided if it better to run condi increase food, condi decrease food so I can replace SoR …I really need to play the build more and see.
I have not tried this in any sort of solo fashion. It might work but I created it with the intent of having others around me. Again, thanks to Sol for providing the PvP version of this build which provided the inspiration.
Any comments, critiques, suggestions are always welcome.
Zonian

OP, I can say this much regarding this thread – thank you for generating much needed discussion about Ranger builds. It is a good thing for the Ranger community to propose different traits, armor load-outs, etc. Yes, there is much work that needs to be done on the profession, but getting us thinking is always good.

Solrik – Does this meet your intentions?
