How do you compensate for the low amount of precision/crit rating? Presuming a 30/30/0/10/0 build you will have high crit damage and health but about ~26% to 30% crit rate. It’s entirely possible you don’t need it since you hit hard, just curious.

Well I can offer one tactic. Most zergs are tunnel visioned. They see the front and push there. Once they have clashed I flank them. Yes this is after they have clashed but I can get in deep enough to drop traps or torch 5 or grasping vines or fear wolf, etc. I get out and then engage on another part.

Again, I play in lower tiers and that could be something that only works there but it works.

This is a WvW sniping build. I love sitting on the walls or at the flanks and try to near one-shot other players. Yes, I know about bow and I use it also, but it does not live up to the satisfaction of see an enemies health bar plummet with a Kill Shot. Okay moving on….

Arms – III, VII, XI
Precise Strike and Deep Cuts help maintain a bleed on a target so as to benefit from Attack of Opportunity (10% damage to a bleeding target). Critical Burst increases burst crit chance by 10%. Crack Shot makes all shots pierce and lowers the skill cooldowns by 20%. Furious helps refund spent adrenaline for use in the next Kill Shot.

I left 10 points out on purpose because a player can put them wherever they want to fit their play style.
Strength – II, III, IV are all solid picks if you want more power.
Defense – II Dogged March is always good for mobility and a little bit of regen.
Tactics – VI Empowered would be great if it was not bugged right now. Instead of the extra 2% damage per boon on the warrior, we only get one. Pity since Signet of Rage (SoR) would increases damage by 6% and/or superior Runes of Lyssa would boost damage by 18% since the rune bonus provides nine boons on elite skill use. Discipline – IV, X or VIII, XI, XII
Inspiring Shouts enables all shouts to grant 8 strike of adrenaline. Popping “On My Mark” and “For Great Justice” coupled with a triple return on critical hits thanks to Furious and adrenaline fills rather quickly. Also, Kill Shot’s damage amount associated with adrenaline is calculated at the end of it’s cast; as a result, popping shouts while casting to fill all 3 bars is an excellent tactic in providing as many Kill Shots as possible. Essentially a player does not have to wait for the bar to fill, shouts help fill it.
Destruction of the Empowered can be selected if sniping a boon heavy target. This trait is entirely up taste and requires awareness of what boons are active on the target. Adding 21% more damage to a guardian when they pop “Save Yourselves” is sweet but realize retaliation will reflect back some of the damage.
Mobile Strikes allows for getting out of bad situations with sword #2. Add that with horn #4 and a tactical retreat is always available. Word to the wise though, disable auto-targeting. Versatile Rage/Power and Fast hands are great minor traits that allow swapping to the sword gaining might, leaping to a downed foe, hitting Final Thrust or just stomping them, then retreating back to a better to position to snipe.
Burst mastery – 10% more damage and cheaper burst skills=yes please.
Heighted Focus depends on how much crit you have versus how much you want. Not everyone runs zerk gear so you can easily swap around the traits and get a feel for what you like.

Skills – Mending for heals and some condition removal. For Great Justice, might and fury is always good. On My Mark provides a 10% damage increase on the target. SoR fits just perfect versus Juggernaut or Uber Banner . Third skill is up to choice. Fear Me offers a nice gap creator or stomp preventer for an ally. Signet of Might (SoM) is good against shield professions like guardians, engineers, or mesmers. Pop it before KS and KS becomes unblockable. Signet of Fury (SoF) is an on demand adrenaline provider. If using SoM and SoF players may want to select Signet Mastery in Discipline for the cooldown.

Armor & Trinkets – I run berserk for power/precision/critical damage increases with exquisite ruby jewels in the trinkets. This makes the build less hardy due to the lower toughness, so being aware of the situation is highly important. Know where you are and where the enemy is. However, sword and horn are both knight (power/toughness/vitality) since these are used to either attack a down player or retreat when needed.

Runes – Right now I’m still experimenting. I’ve experimented with Lyssa (but again Empowered is broken so it’s a lower % damage increase), Infiltrator for the +%damage when foe is under 50% health. Hoelbrak or Soldier runes for more condition removal options. Strength runes for the 5% damage increase under might affects (it was ok but not my favorite). Divinity runes are strong contenders as they provide a 12% increase in crit damage and +60 in all stats. Scholar are just nasty, they pack a nice punch.
Sigils – On the rifle Sigil of Fire, Superior Sigil of Force/Accuracy are all contenders. On the sword and warhorn, Sigils of Bloodlust on both so I can fast stack.
Food – Sweet and spicy butternut squash soup or plate of truffle steak. I’m still experimenting though.
Superior Sharpening Stone or Master Maintenance Oil to fill in any gaps in power or precision.

I’ve pretty much leveled my ranger in WvW, (PvE was just too easy on a ranger I guess). I’ve run with zergs, soloed, small teamed, escorted dolyaks, and defended keeps/towers. I would say rangers contribute alot, but how much will depend on the player more than profession X vs Y.

My favorite thing to do is flank. I love breaking out from the zerg and hitting the sides of an enemy with two hyenas and me. I love dropping mud on them, trapping or throwing conditions all around. Flanking pulls players from the main effort and I have plenty of evades, regen, and two pets to lay down problems, back-out if needed and jump back in to harass. I also play on a lower level tier so maybe I don’t encounter the highly organized spartan zergs of Tiers 1 through 4 you are use to.

But like I said, how good a player will be or how much they will contribute is dependent on them.

I just read “What Scarlet Saw”. It is an amazing story and helps enrich the character and our understanding of her. However, instead of just leaving it as a story why not animate it. Make it an in game short movie that explains her. It could have been watched when we talked to Vorpp. He could have narrated it as a flashback/backstory. Or it could have been a quest to the grove, then Rata Sum and we could have seen mini-movies establishing the back story. This concept was used when Rox and Braham were introduced and work great in my view. I don’t know how many people read the back stories, but everyone who is participating in the living story will watch an animation and it would help frame and develop the characters so much.

P.S. I know it is a good amount of work to create cinematics/animatics but it would be so worth it.

If you want a server where your impact will be felt immediately, go to AR. Yes we have lost some large guilds which resulted in our freefall, but we are rebuilding. An organized group of players will bring a greatly needed amount of power to the server. If you have specific questions please contact Dovgan or Cornchips.

I enjoy gunslinging also. After watching Taquito’s videos I had no excuse not to make one. I made him a few days ago, he’s almost level 20 and just shooting up a storm.

I guess the thing that attracts me too it so much is the mobile, kitting play-style. I love mobility, dodging, escapes, all the evasive stuff. It’s why I tend to play ranger or warhorn something warrior and why my guardian or mesmer never make it past level 17.

Well I best create a gunslinger and just play P/P on the way up to get good at it. What would a charr dual pistol look like?

Ah Taquito, Taquito, Taquito. You are the only thief that makes me want to play a thief. I love the gunslinger style – Vash the Stampede, Bastion gunslinger, westerns. The temptation to play one is pretty great. I guess I should just do it.

Seriously, these guys can keep distance, they’ve stealth, deal tons of damage, have area denial and can soak an ungodly amount of damage.

There’s no hard counter to them and even the spirits take forever to kill.

Please reduce nerf either their damage, the spirit health, their cc or stealth.

You also left out that we can: bench press two bears at once, walk on water, shark pets dedicate a week to us, Lyssa calls us for dates, we swim after eating, Ascalon ghosts sit around fires and tell stories about us, we teach Krytan drake hounds to bark in Canthan, we talk about fight club, we grant genies 3 wishes and only a ranger has swum across the Crystal Desert.

I got some flak for criticizing Anvil Rock in an earlier post. I just participated in killing an AR zerg of 20+ with I think four people open field (albiet with some npc help). We weren’t in a group or anything, just a few other people who happened to be in the same area. I have literally never seen worse play in the entire time I have been playing this game.

The last time I saw something like this, I was a fairly fresh lvl 50 paladin still running in the zerg. The premier gank group of the time, CKD, bombed said zerg, killing more than 100 of the people around me. When they finally died, I was stunned. While I waited for mana regen to rez, I asked my group (who had all died asides from me), how the hell could so many people die to so few? No one said a word. That was a bit over 10 years ago.

That was what watching these people die felt like.

The most unbelievable part of this post……was that you found an AR zerg of 20+. Probably the WAR uplevel karma train.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Twenty AR in a zerg sounds high but maybe it was reset night or something. We usually only have 8 or so when we take keeps but I’m in the Eastern Time Zone.

It is about 30 minutes long but he does a good bit of research about the Thaumanova Reactor, the new fractal to be, and comes across some very interesting information and coincidences. What does this have to POSSIBLY do with the Queens’ Jubilee? The battle of Divinity’s Reach spoken about at the end of the Infinity Ball personal story for the Asura. Just watch it okay. Wooden Potatoes is good stuff.

I have a suggestion. Log on to your ranger and play some PvE, WvW, PvP, whatever you like and decide for yourself. You will get responses on rangers being the worst to the best and everything in between. It is good to seek the counsel of others but in the end, only you can really decide for yourself.

Have you tried out the new runes for torment and confusion on a condiwarrior yet? I would think the torment would a better compliment to S/S.

Now that is an excellent video! Oh GW2 need more good vids, machinima, etc. like this. Well done with the transitions and capturing powerful, or comical (the asuran falling off) posses and moves to express the characters. Camera angles, pauses, FX and sweep where well done also. I can’t imagine how many times you had to do the sweeps to get them just right (maybe few but still good). Really good pace throughout the video. Very, very well done.

It’s perception. That’s what matters. And videos like this ultimately change perceptions, whether valid or not, a true DPS test or not, or however you want to interpret it. What’s going to stick in people’s minds is “DnT is running ranger so ranger is cool with me”. And that’s what matters the most to people like me who have been denied dungeon experiences for the love of playing ranger in gw2.

Just channel the many last stands of history like the Alamo, Thermopylae, Hastings, Samar, Panjang or Camaron and you will have an epic battle to remember.

Feedback from a WvW perspective
This will pump out a lot of damage but you will need to play smartly. You have little room for error with so little toughness and health. Not saying that is bad, it comes with Zerk territory. Just know where your enemy is, watch out for reflects, use GS to defend yourself but only enough to get out of trouble. I’d keep a warhorn handy also so you can #5 just before entering battle to buff up, then swap to GS.

PvE perspective – Know your fights, save your dodges. Again you have little room for error with so little toughness and health. Wisely place the spirit and use LB at max range as much as possible.

Among other benefits the stealth on hunters also let’s you cast the beginning of barrage without detection.

Now if I can just fire a barrage at a zerg without taking 4 to 10k damage from retaliation…

Barrage the rear area and you can miss most of it since it tends to stack in the front. In addition, players tend to fall back when they start getting hit so they end up walking into more of it. Just one of things I do.

Great updates. I near thought it was a joke when I read stealth. Had to read it a couple of times and the Remorseless Strikes just makes it sweeter.
And Blast finisher!!! Now rangers can hide in keeps with a thief or engi and combo filed stealth. Then after the keep resets, pull out the bears and start tanking the npcs for a quick recap. Ahhhh yeah.

I know the pain that Anvil Rock is feeling right now, it the same that IoJ felt after Halloween event exposed most of the PuGs as PvE’ers then WvW’ers. Anvil Rocks moral must be at an all time low and it sucks to be at that state. I personally don’t want to attack Anvil Rock and will avoid any crushing blows if I can. Though if our zergs happen to meet on the battle field, expect a fight to the death. Right now Gate of Madness is force to be reckoned with and have made it clear to push on IoJ. I am not upset that Gate of Madness has pushed us hard and been all over our borderland and EB corner.

IoJ is all for working with other servers to improve there WvW moral since it benefits all servers in a WvW match up. I will try and bring up some kind of non-aggression pact or maybe an alliance with Anvil Rock with the other IoJ commanders/guild leaders in our Team Speak. I also would like to point out that I am NOT the voice for all of Isle of Janthar and what ever I say here is of my personal thoughts and observations of our commander base.

Do not give up Anvil Rock and know that even if your outnumbered you can still fight and grow as a community. Don’t give up Anvil Rock you can count on one IoJ commander to root for you and wish you the best of luck. As for Gate of Madness, you guys are tough and rather large in force, much respect to you guys (unless your buying intel off the IoJ spy, then shame on you) and keep it classy.

We won’t give up, that’s kinda what make AR….AR. Fight ‘til your dead, WP back. Hey! No repairs so dive back in and take out as many as you can, numbers be kitten’d.

As new guilds come in to WvW we need to make sure we establish TS rules and how we communicate similar to how EBay is set up. Yes, I know I complimented Ebay…begrudgingly but they have a good system. We need to adapt it to our needs and it is easier to establish in the beginning as folks are entering in. But until then, enjoy having groups of 5 and amazingly skilled roamers kick your tail

Questions:
How often does protection stay up? Or in other words, have you experienced a gap in the protection buff due to spirit time out/death etc?

Also, how effective are have Solar Flare and Quicksand? Do they hit your opponent(s) or do you have to lead them into it like a trap?

The only character I’ve ever leveled to 80 is a ranger. Funny enough it was the last profession I tried (well except necros, just can’t …). I didn’t want to make one because they were so common and I actually didn’t enjoy the GW1 ranger. Nevertheless, when I finally made one I just couldn’t stop. One thing that still has me hooked is just when I think I have figured it out I see a player find a new way to play it. Another is I can swap my pet out to adjust for group, new build or what ever I want. Need fury buff, come here red moa. Need knock downs, come here hyena. I wanna parade around with Flamingo Rex (my pink moa) because its amazingly cool, then so be it. For me, its a very flexible platform.
Lastly, its fun! Yeah, that’s right, I’m on a forum saying I play a profession because its fun – dps be kitten’d. So what ever you pick, play the one you enjoy.

We have lost more than just 1 guild, We are loosing Zero Today, from what I have heard about 30 minutes ago. what’s the attraction to play on a constant loosing server? Guilds who want to play actively would rather play offensively moreso than on constant defense. So it’s been tough for us here at AR. I will ride this old bull till it can’t ride no more

We’re losing ZERO now!? Ah man! I understand the desire to have coordinated battles but maybe I’m just too stubborn to leave AR. Dang, we really have a lot of rebuilding to do.

It would be great if it reset on a weapon swap and/or had an internal cool-down (probably a little to OP).
Another option could be a %chance on crit of resetting. Example: 25 percent chance on crit to reset opening strikes.
