See you in Tyria.

Ranger Grand Master trait (XI) states, “Active effects of signets also affect you.” Does this mean when a signet is activated the ranger gets the same benefit as the pet?
Example:
Signet or Stone – Passive: Improves toughness for you and your pet. Active: Your pet takes no damage from attacks. If I take the master trait’s language that means I receive no damage either for 6 secs.
Signet of the Hunt – Active: Your pet’s next attack deals more damage. Does this mean my next attack will also do X% more damage?
I’ve never taken a hard look at signets until the recent patch so the above questions have me wondering. I cannot find anything that would lead me to believe the contrary.
If the verbiage is correct:
Sig of Stone – 6 seconds of no damage (64 sec traited)
Sig of Wild – 8 seconds of 25% more damage with stability (48 sec traited)
Sig of Hunt – next attack +50% damage (24 sec traited).
This does not sound like the ele’s trait to retain the “passive effect” of signets. That language is very specific and clear. The description for ranger has me wondering if speccing into the grand master trait might be something worth investigating.
Has anyone tested this or know if it is just a bad description? I’ll attempt to test when I get home if someone hasn’t already.

It’s a nice dilemma to be in. I actually ran with an frost spirit and enjoyed taking on a champ giant. It actually lasted longer than expected and the plus vitality on the bear was pure win. I’m going to try some WvW weird stuff and see what happens.
Yep. The shouts are actually pretty nice right now. I haven’t tried the trait that lowers the cool down but anything that lets me katassasinate more often is WIN WIN in my book.
Fun video. Most folks do not understand how to disengage from a fight momentarily for better positioning.
Question:
Are your running Soldiers (P/T/V) accessories and weapons also?
Figures. The one night I take a break from WvW you all go off and have an epic, hour long, three way battle. Please tell me someone took some video footage.
I sure did, and I am glad I did.
Mad Props to Rekz and Pk, they were absolutely determined to take that keep despite being wiped a couple times. While they were running back, AR would take their turn. In the end, EBay was able to bait some of our guys to the North Inner gate and wiped half of em.
It was literally a non-stop, hour long fight right in front of the Lord Room. Although, I did manage to cut out some boring auto-attacking and some fast forwarding to get it down to 20 mins. Thanks to everyone involved in that fight, was epic fun.
big THANK YOU!
Great use of portal toward the end there. Man, good stuff. Good stuff.

@ Fuax -
TY. Fixed it.
choigreywolf, I agree. It is a fun class to play. It’s just plain fun.
Ranger regeneration ability is OP
I second Faux’s statement with hilarious proof, provided by a highly luminescent sylvari. Gotta lay off the Miracle-Gro man, it makes you jumpy.
sorry Faux, I just had to share it. Its too funny.

WvW
- When fighting I swap between hyena, drake hounds for knock downs or jaguar and some other feline for bleeds. Sometimes I will use two birds to try something different.
- If I’m playing LB/SB I’ll use devourers and I’ll pepper zergs/groups from range.
- When tower defending I’ll use moas/stalker mix for the boons. I put the pet on passive and then just pop F2 for might, fury, protection, etc.
PvE
- Drake hound because I love dogs. I’ll put a jaguar as back-up when I want to katassasinate something, or a polar bear if I want to pet tank.

oh, and John Peters said I could have a pony.
12 pages without getting locked. I’m proud of everyone.
Well this just can’t do…Why does BP feel it necessary to glitch?
Well I’d like to see some one photoshop Kalkz on a palanquin carried by four siege golems. And above his head it says, “Grand Master Gate Crasher!”
;)
This ranger is still here and I’m glad they are not the “popular” class. Maybe that satisfies the rebel in me, but too many player who do not know how to play a class will give that class a bad rep. Remember huntards from WoW? Thank goodness DKs came along.
In full disclosure I didn’t discover the ranger until this past December after trying out every class since I started playing in beta. I do have two alts, a low level mesmer and a mid level engineer, but my ranger is my main.
Faux, question about regen and confusion stacks.
Do you take confusion damage with each tick of regen? I can’t verify if regen activates confusion damage or not.
Is the regen high enough to offset the confusion damage? I’m wonder how a confusion bomb memsmer with their extended condition time and hard hitting, quick confusion stacking would fair against your build.
Ug, if my mesmer were 80 I’d duel you to find out since we’re currently both in T5.
This is the third time I’ve had this happen with a BP upleveled, and I’m not sure whether or not it’s the same guy. I’m just happy I had FRAPS handy this time
Faux, that was funny.
There is no regen like ranger regen.
Is this thread even reality? People are crying because they aren’t 2v1ing the first place server? What the kitten is this garbage. I’ve never seen so many people care about meaningless scores.
I assumed it was all people trying to troll each other, but now I’m not so sure. I just don’t know anymore.
Here’s a picture of a subwoofer. I’m done stirring the pot, this is just silly. Like the subwoofer.
ROTFLOL! I can’t see straight I’m laufing sdl;..ch.

Crud I couldn’t even type. Ah! that was hilarious. TY Tetra Bug, I needed that.
I didn’t want to play a human toon but one part of their story greatly intrigued me – humans are NOT the predominant race. Humans are the underdogs with their backs against the wall. How do they handle that? How do they reconcile that their old enemy, the charr, are now surpassing them? Will all the human backgrounds, elonian, ascalonian, ktrytan, etc. mix together as a strength or weakness?
I want to know.
Boom De Yada, Boom De Yada, Boom De Yada, Boom De Yada.
Tyria is just awesome.
sorry couldn’t resist…..
I like world versus world.
As a Norn, Asura are basically too small to in anyway see what they are wearing. They could be wearing full T3 Asura gear and have a legendary, or they could be wearing a paper bag and carrying a toothpick. Always makes me laugh. I wonder if they know?
Well, according to the female Norn guarding Jora’s statue, she can’t even tell the difference between male asura and female asura.
The Asurans have the same problem with Norns. So don’t worry. They are all knees to them and not very pretty ones.
HAHAHAHAHA! I love this.
I’m breaking up with you Gorefiend.9675, our relationship is over! I can’t take it anymore… it’s making me cry every time I look at you.

I’m so glad AR is pressing Ebay and BP, it starting to get through in our server and more people are becoming interested in WvW. It has one bad side effect though. Since I’ve started my WvWvW addiction I’ve never had to queue for Eternal Battlegrounds from Anvil Rock; however, since last reset Eternal BG has been full-up for AR! I’ve had to run around the BLs but it been a good learning experience how the BLs can affect the greater strategic picture. Oh, I can’t forget that I finally ran into the infamous CHAR during a battle or two…and yes we won.
As an EBay citizen I have not had to queue for EBG at all this week. Granted, I’ve only WvW’d like 4 nights this week, but every time I’ve gone to EBG and never had a queue. And yes, I work, so it has been during peak hours.
I always see dismissal of many EBay victories as “their numbers took us,” but I don’t think we REALLY have that many more people than it is always made out to be. Any zerg v zerg situations I’ve witnessed have had fairly evenly numbered zergs, rather than a gross lead by EBay. I would be interested in seeing actual numbers of players in attendance at various times during the week, because the anecdotal evidence of the zerg that is EBay always leaves me thinking people are exaggerating.
I can agree, numbers are a factor but they are one piece of the tactical pie. I’ve seen smaller EBay units out-maneuver AR and BP zergs many times by hitting their rearguard/flank and start breaking up the zerg. Credit where credit is due, some of EBays guilds are real good.
What has been exciting is seeing both AR commanders and guilds learning how to counter flanking, adopting new tactics and changing how we attack you all. The battles are fun, we have to think and we aren’t just steamroll’d. I’m also excited to see more people logging in from AR, it means our server is getting more involved.
It would be awesome if the sPvP players we have are logging in. They would bring some great talent.

@awge: Don’t you just love it when people give you their back. Free bleed stacks.
The post right after it is:
well first i suggest you to go spvp with your ranger and take a close look at the traits and skils , and maybe watch some youtube videos of them to understand the playstyle…
second..i also get the feeling that gs arngers do more dmg then “normal” rangers, but i still don´t have a problem fighting them , in my opionion ranger is the weakest class in wvw in small combat (5man group or lower) , i always targer ranger first in a group.. they srsly need a buff..
i dont know what you did wrong so taht you died to that ranger , maybe you have to less experience in d/d or did some vital mistakes..who knows..
i can just say , play lnger ele , d/d or s/d , normaly rangers sould not be a problem
True. I’m not contending the OP needs to brush up on his skills but it was interesting other folks agreed with him. Muppet’s post surprised me most.
I’m wanting to know if rangers who are experienced with SB/GS builds have been able to routinely defeat D/D eles.

I was bouncing around the class forums, I’m always trying to discover ways to counter or play other classes, and I came across a post in the elementalist section titled, “How can we defeat a SB/GS Ranger?” Say what????
It was an interesting read. I quote the OP:
I’m almost embarrassed to make this thread but I’m now at a complete loss on how to deal with this problem. I run a bunker build on my D/D Ele and though I’m still fairly new to being a level 80, I tend to hold my own most of the time. That is, unless I run into a SB/GS Ranger with half a brain.
Last night, one of these Rangers personally wiped out 3 of us as we were trying to run him down in such a way that we looked like complete fools. I’ve never been killed so fast! What made it worse was that he took us all out and then found the time to run back and drop the stomp. Pathetic isn’t it? Even though I love my Ele, this almost made me go back and start working on my Ranger again.
The other point of concern is that I’ve seen this class/build just tear through one of our roaming groups like we weren’t even a threat. In normal PvP, I never had much concern about Rangers but in WvW, I just about /crapmypants whenever I see one now.
Now I just started playing SB/GS and I am having fun with it but I have yet to 1v1 an elementalist. For you more seasoned SB/GS rangers out there have, you had a high success rate against D/D elementalist?

Check the link to your build, it brings up a connection error instead the web page. I’d like to take a look at you have constructed.
Expiatus could you perhaps link me to said video? Maybe I’ll learn something I like/do not know. ^^
Below is one of his videos he posted on the forums. It’s main point was showing off Pain Inverter, an asuran racial skill, in melee fights. I have an asuran ranger so I was interested in it’s effectivness. Fortunatley, it was eye opening how he used axe, sword, torch and dagger to chill, bleed, cripple, poison, and manuever around oponents. I then realized I was trying to see ranger melee through the eyes of a guardian or warrrior, so I adjusted and learned (still learning) to take advantage of a rangers style of melee.

Here is the link to his youtube channel, plenty to enjoy.

jpnova,
TY for a great post. Too much “bandwagoning” about rangers fail at X, Y and Z gets tiring. As a class we are not perfect, and no one is advocating that, but we are also not a leper colony. Rangers do bring a good amount to the proverbial table as you have described, just in a different way.
I also tried every class, the ranger was the last one. Zonian became my main and I just can’t get over how much I enjoy playing a ranger. I use to hate short bow, then learned to use it. I use to hate melee, then I watched Xsorus’s PI videos and learned to use a sword and axe. I’m still getting use to the GS (like only use #3 to escape when you DON’T have an enemy targeted).
Rangers just do things differently, more indirectly than other classes. Maybe that’s what throws people.
Again good read.
What brand of toaster are you playing on to get your graphics settings that low?
The important stuff…
i5-3470 @ 3.20GHz
8 GB of RAM
GE Force GTX 550Ti
I forget what motherboard I used.
Resolution 1600×900 at mostly max settings. There are few settings I tweek.
FPS can range from 35 during heavy WvWvW battles to 70 just sitting in LA or a city.I have to admit though, the screen caps never do the actual game image justice.
You didn’t even need to reply; there wasn’t any need for that post questioning your computer’s capabilities running GW2. Unless he/she posted because he/she was interested in buying you a new system, I just see it as offensive/trolling (even if you had a “toaster” for a computer, which you don’t, what right does he/she have to point that out or how is it relevant to the discussion?)
I just took it as a joking compliment, or a half hearted attempt at sarcasm, since it is a pretty good pic.

This thread made me LOL. Made my day being stuck at work and all. Thank you
You are very welcome. I’m glad I could give you a good laugh.
@ Trashbarg
Actually, I would play an elementalist if I could always use those sweet wepons you have. I like the idea of a “battle mage” type character.
I can agree with the love of [GF]. I’ve ran with them multiple times in the EB borderlands and in the EBG and they really know their stuff. I feel myself getting better whenever I run with them, and I don’t know if it’s the confidence boost they bring or their tactical know-how.
GF also just has a lot of individually skilled players that know how to play every situation without someone telling them exactly what to do! That really gives them a leg up against 90% of groups out there.
THIS^
An important part of WvW is situational awareness and correctly reacting to changes. Examples:
- Joe just went down so two friends break off to heal while one covers them.
- Fred group targets a enemy so the dps traited folks focus fire, the support traited cover them.
- All party members knowing not to over extend themselves.
- Party members know how to stack buffs, etc.
So many people do not know how to react in fluid combat situations. Not a diss, just an observation. It takes practice, gesh, it takes ground combat troops extensive unit traing to become as amazing as they are. But when you are part of a group that knows how to react, it is joy to play with them.
It is probably very similar to modern day armies’ logistics. There is a quartermaster or logistics personnel usually on most levels with varying degrees of responsibility. Using this as an example:
The charr would have a Quaestor at the tribune level responsible for high (strategic) level logistics. Their concerns are with large quantities of food, weapons, materials, where to aquire them and the most effective means to distribute them to the next unit level, the centurions. Tribune level logistics would also be responsible for all the policy and administration associated with strategic level logistics.
The Quaestors at the centurion level would focus on obtaining and distributing supplies to multiple warbands in the area of operation.
On the legionnaire level (the warband), I do not think they would have a quaestor since they are typically a direct combat unit. Quaestor are usually older, more expereinced charr who skills have lessoned on the field due to injury or age. Nevertheless, a warband would have a soldier responsible for supplies and they would interact with the centurion level quaestor.
I see that pic and think, “Long live the METAL!!”
I like how you lay down glue shot and then nails when being pursued. It’s a perfect example of Parthian Tactics. Engineers are annoying and unpredictable, and I love them for that.
The Pirate of Penzance parady is down-right amazing and hysterical! Great video.
How do Charr take baths?
Do unattractive mesmers have a skill called “Inebriated Vision”? Do they learn it from the local tavern goers, Han Ekin or Bud Miller?
What happens when Sylvari drink Miracle-Gro?
Do the Charr Legions have to do random drug tests on war bands for catnip abuse?
Is a narcissist’s favorite class the Mesmer?
If you kill a Sylvari is it classified as homicide or herbicide?
How bad is charr morning hair?
Did the great camel spirit bless Norn men & women with sufficient fatty deposits so they could endure harsh environments on little food and water?
If an undead eats a Sylvari, is it eating vegetarian?
How does a moose drop a magical rifle? What is it doing with a rifle anyway? Hunting Norn?
Do quaggan ever say, “No get quaggan angry.” “You no like quaggan when quaggan angry.”?
What is the ground speed velocity of an unladed Moa bird?
Dear brothers and sisters of the elemental persuasion,
I have to give a heartfelt thanks to you. I know you wear few articles of clothing, something about keeping in tune with nature, elements of harmony or some hippie stuff like that. Also sometimes you smell like burnt fur – sorry charr bros, it’s true and by Smolder’s left eye it stinks! And I’ll admitt, I’ve laughed seeing a flaming lettuce head running for the water. Why doesn’t he just “attune” himself to water and put it out? I don’t know.
But in spite of all that small stuff you all are so important to me. You know how to treat me right, with the combo fields and boons. But, there is one thing above all that just really tells me you love me…
FLAMING SWORD OF DEATH!!!!!
You all are AWESOME!!!! Right here, c’mon. Gimme a hug. I love you, I do. /sniff.
Sincerely,
Expiatus
@lokheit, just out of curiosity and not insulting or attacking, why are you here then? spying?
Don’t worry I’m not taking it as an attack
The reason is basically this:
What I said of my Largos Mesmer… I know it’s still a long time until expansions (and probably my Tengu Engineer comes in a sooner expansion, so even more time for Largos) but I like to theorycraft what will I do with him and solve some doubts I have with professions (for example I was thinking about starting a thread to ask mesmers’s opinion in your elite Mass Invisibility as from my standpoint as a main Thief I think it’s too dependant on a teamspeaker to be an elite slot but maybe I’m missing something).
Aditionally sometimes I just lurk around some other profession forums even if I’m not currently playing them just to check the state of the game and how each player base see their own profession and what I could expect when I play with those professions either as allies or as opponents.
I like to have all the facts and be 100% objective about the game before making claims and asking for buffs/nerfs so sometimes when I’m a bit bored I investigate a bit in every profession forum to see if I find something interesting.
I saw this thread about a bug that I’ve seen before with my shortbow and pistol as I said so I answered :P
Oh my goodness! Someone who objectively investigates, ponders results and respectfully answers/posts! To paraphrase an old quote, “What is a decent guy like you doing in the forums?” Get out while you still can!
Just kidding, but it is refreshing not seeing someone take immediate offense and lighting a flame thrower.
Thanks for the explaination. I have noticed a similar effect when the target moves back while I was attacking with GS #1 and I still hit them but they were out of range for the other skills.
As a “pug” commander…I am having fun in Eternal BG! I don’t get zerg crazy but if you step into the AR sector while on my watch…look out. I am the Char necro that over extends too much when there is a big zerg in our sector or anywhere else really. I think AR pug groups are scary business and if a commander understands the manpower/map coverage ratio then things get really interesting…
WAR (War Lords) would like to thank all guilds! We learn with each win and wipe. If you are in WvW…we like you. Even though Ebay brings that lag debuff and BP are backdoor beauties, I am glad to have made it this far with people I have been playing with for months. Both guildies and non-guild members alike. It has been fun to make this long and painful climb.
AR has fought against odds for months. This is nothing new to what we have already been doing. Usually an underdog at first, our resolve keeps things interesting. I know we don’t have the numbers to “challenge” Ebay. But like I said before…AR is a pve/tpvp server and now we have the numbers to prove it. The top player in pve is from AR and about 70% of the top 100 spvpers are from AR. According to Anet…and we keep climbing as a wvw server.
So your that char necro! Between you and Forty Oz you guys keep it entertaining. Any time I’m on I look for you guys and just dive into the fray.
You know, if we could organize those spvpers into 5 player teams and send them out to control choke points, harass, etc. they would be a force to be reckoned with and it would boost AR.
Anvil Rock since beta.
Why play WvWvW?
Beacause you can play as front line insane DPS or respec and play a support role ‘cause thats what you feel like. You never know what’s going to happen because you are playing against other people, and they can do some crazy stuff!
Just wanted to post some pics from last night. Props to Anvil Rockers and Commander Forty Oz again. They made sure it was a fun night. The first pic is when Ebay was trying to take Stonemist from BP who just took it from us. So we decided to pop some popcorn and watch for ahwhile. After awhile we attacked Ebay messing up their offensive.
The second pic was AR dropping catapults on the rock hill just east of Durios gulch and pushing back three waves of BP before they finally destroyed the catapaults. So we just went to umberglade woods, built a treb and sieged them from there.
Fun night!
Or … they may notice something that isn’t pairing right, working correct, etc. and fix it.
Or … they’ll notice completely wrong tooltips and fix them.
Or … they’ll notice the information we would like to have on tooltips and fix them.Good luck with that. In 7 months the list hasn’t gotten any shorter so i’m sure the next 7 months will be different :P
“Pessimists are usually right and optimists are usually wrong but all the great changes have been accomplished by optimists.”
? Thomas L. Friedman
Very interesting build here. It’s definitely unorthodox which might be why it works. So how do you deal with people that actually focus on you and have stability? Do you stick like glue to your bunker teammates (from 1200 range away? :P)
With a build like this it comes down to maintaining distance and awareness of your surroundings. When I play a WvWvW long range support build I make sure that I surf the opponents zerg and I’m always near an ally. In case I get caught I’ll use lightning reflexes and great sword 2 to clear some distance. Muddy terrain can also save your bacon in some situations.
Ok here is my idea for Spirits.
Spirits have 2 modes, Offensive and Defensive that you can switch back and forth between.
Defensive Causes the Ranger to admit an Aura around him
Offensive Causes his pet to gain an offensive ability.Stone Spirit – Defensive : Every 10 Seconds Gives everyone around him 3 Seconds of Protection in a 600 Radius
– Offensive: Every 10 second your pet will cause the ground to tremble in a 300 radius around him and immobilize targets for 2 secondsFrost Spirit – Defensive : Grants an Aura that causes attacks against the player to cause 2 seconds of Chilled, 300 Radius 5 second ICD.
– Offensive : Every 10 Seconds the pet will sent a splash of water out granting 4 seconds of Regen to all allies within 600 Radius.Sun Spirit – Defensive : Grants and Aura around the player that causes attacks against the player to cause 2 Seconds of Burning Damage – 6 second ICD 300 radius
– Offensive : Gives the players pet an ability that does a 300 Radius blind every 10 secondsStorm Spirit – Defensive: Gives the player an aura that causes attacks against the player to grant 5 Seconds of Vigor – 8 Second ICD – 600 Radius
– Offensive: Every 10 Seconds, the Pet Gains the ability to Daze for 2 seconds on his next attack.
Xsourus I like your proposal for the following reasons:
1. Many rangers express the desire to provide greater benefit to a group, whether in dungeons or PvE/WvWvW world settings. This suggestion gives them more utilities to provide boons or conditions.
2. By splitting the ability between the pet and the Ranger a player can use two different effects depending on what is needed. For example, send the pet in to daze a monster or opponent going for a stomp or keep protection up due to incoming pressure.
3. Defensive and offensive settings provide players a choice between play styles. They can turtle for sniper and defense, they can remain in the vicinity and melee, they can extend their reach/support via the pet.
4. It follows along ANets desire to keep the pet a part of the Ranger’s arsenal and gives it more utility.
Areas of concern:
1. Managing cooldowns and switching between defensive/offensive mode for three spirits.
2. Visually representing def/off states to the player.
3. Are the defesive auras combo field?
4. Can the pet use all offensive mode skills at once?
5. Adding a base set of skills usable by all pets plus their “F2” skill would be rather potent, even potentially over-powered.
Thoughts?
They didn’t kill the Ranger. Far from it.
QZ nerf ? I would suggest that the quickness nerf hit Warriors harder than us….since a higher percentage of Warriors had it on their bar than Rangers had it on their bar. Go read their forums. They whine almost as much as Rangers.
Thiefs also relied heavily on haste….again, more than Rangers did. Plus they got another second added to stealth reveal timer+ culling fix will also hurt them in WvW.
A haste nerf across the boards does not mean it effects Rangers more than any other class.
Add in the GS buff…and it rocks now. overall after this patch Rangers are ahead of where they were a couple of days ago.
So everyone in the pity party can relax. Although no matter what happens in any patch you’re going to find something to whine about. Hell you could win a million dollars in the lottery and still whine because of all the taxes you are charged. If you’re gonna quit, then quit. Send Anet a parting farewell and be on your way.
Oh so many “dittos” to this.
It’s hard to beleive the vitriol of “RANGER RAGE!!!!”
ANet adjusts incrementally, here a little, there a little. I’m having a blast with the updates, especially enjoying great sword. I have to agreee with Forzani, if your gonna quit, go…and don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.
Thank you for the tips.
