First of all I find it very annoying people saying: ‘your not using it right’ as hard as this class may be it’s not math at college or high philosophy. Most of us here are lvl 80 engineerds and I trust if you played with your engineer alot, you can play it right.
I think your use of the term “convoluted” is a bit misleading here, and I think I understand the point you are trying to make. I have to disagree with it though. So what if I have to hit 2 key strokes? or hit a key twice for a secondary function on a skill? Engineers use those skills all day for their general and original purpose of said skill. The only difference in using that skill in a fields, is to do the exact same thing we do all day to execute the skill, only we direct it through a field. That doesn’t actually make it more tedious. At least not in my opinion. I think it is your perception that makes it appear tedious.
I must disagree. I think the engineer is a hard to play class, my friens (warrior, guardian, thief) found it hard to chose how to play. A warrior is picking what weapon does most damage, but as an engineer we do not have that insight. We can’t do simple maths on how much we can spike. We have ro make a carefull balance between critical hitsn just regular dps, conditions and a whole lot of other stuff.
I must say i agree, we really need to take detours for combo fields, and other stuff but those detourd can work in our advantage! There are similair traits who give swiftness andother boons for switching kist.
Perhaps my statment “engineers aren’t finished” was a little harsh, but I still think this class can do so much more when everything is fixed. We have such potentien!
I do not really get the energized armor trait? Why not go for the extra burning damage in combination with more precision and icendiary powder trait?
Except above point I think it’s a very good and decent build. Not being experimental has its benifits.
Highest dps against an absolutely stationary target? maybe. Not really though, cause…you know…backstab thieves and all.
Exactly. Theoratically it might be the highest dps, but sadly enemies are moving…
The discription says: No.
But because it’s a chance there is no CD needed, I guess.
I dunno really. Was reading forums about all classes and EVERY single class has people who say that their class is so unfinished and underpowered, while others are OP. I don’t even know whom to believe now.
Personally, I feel engi is ok with his really cool versatility. Just needs the bugs fixed.This.
Every sub-forum has threads claiming they are under powered. When I see it on warrior forums thought, it makes me laugh.
I do not see those threads on the thieves, mesmer and elementalist ( the other proffesions I play, I can’t state for the other proffesions) forums as much as I see them here.
Almost every day a new thread appears about something is broken or needs a fix, todays one: stupid turret AI.
Engineers dps, -if we do not use grenades-, suck imho.
True as that may be, we are kinda underpowered I think. There is just so much potential left in the engineer class, but Anet does not make much bug fixes…
Let’s face it.
Engineers are just not finished.
There are so much things that need adjustmend, that need bug fixes, our dps sucks (don’t come with “If you buy 6 specific uterly expensive sigils, these and those traits, and use this and that pebble you can do dps!”. I do not want to be specific dps, just with some simple changes a thief can do 10 times more dps then an engineer can.),
Aerodynamic grenades, just 3 weapon sets, why do we have 4 stun breakers?, broken trait system, bugged weapon skills, and more!
I dare to say engineers are the least played class, and many people refer to it as “the broken class”
I know all of the above points are stil argued about, but only the argue is a sign Arenanet has some work to do.
What is your point of view?
Sorry if I made mistakes on my english.
There seems to be a lot of redundancy in the engineer.

I completely agree with you. The engineer is a class which needs alot ( and I mean ALOT) of polishment. Many skills seem usesless, I can’t get why we would need 4stun breakers. Why would we need another distance-keeper such as rocketboots if we have overcharged shot as option?
Aswell as an melee kit option, why not just an melee weapon? It’s not we have alot of weapons. Randomness of elixers, turrets of wool, odd elites, broken trait system, and aerodynamic grenades which can make a bigget distance then a bullet from your rifle.
It’s alot allright…
I’d really like to see just a diffirence between those two. Like a shortbow and a longbow, there can be a rifle and a shotgun!
It would make great sense if every race has its own type of turret skins.
Norn would use more wood and stone, while charr relies on iron.
Engineers: What do you want to see that we don't have?
in Engineer

- Some more weapons (preferably hammer)
- turrets which will not break in one hit
- better elite skills! (a dps one, engineers dps is kinda sucky)
-less elixer randomnes
-A long range weapon (we got really aerodynamic grenades, so we throw those further then we can shoot bullets..)
Can condition damage really make up for lack of direct damage?

Your thought process here can be your down fall as a thief. I use P/S myself, and I love thieves who think as you do. Now if it does 4k on medium armor, what do you think it does to light armor when I reflect it back to you at my higher crit rate?
What does an engineers condition damage have to do with a thief’s direct damage? Your comparing the glassiest of glass cannons with one of the most diversity capabale class in the game.
Well, true as that may be, I still think it is unfair.
Yes engineers are diverse, They can support, dps and cc.
But engineers dps just SUCKS.
People always say the economy is the same as in real world.
But the truth is, it is a digital world. Arenanet does not have production costs of gems. They can sell as many as they want, there isn’t some big stash of gems and after a year they are all sold. Demand can always be fulfiled becuase it is digital.
They are regulating prices.
Grenades?
Just saying..
I played engineer about 200 hours now, and I really still don’t know?
They are a jack-of-all class, but what are they aswell?
Not a clue!
I’m not sure you guys understand how running an MMO works. Unfortunately you can’t fix everything all at once, it takes time. The kit issues, garbage traits, garbage skills, and bugs are annoying, but you need to remember that for every profession they have these outstanding issues yet to fix. It’s not going to be done in a day, a week, or even a month.
I’m sure you think it’s just a simple numbers change, but quite frankly it isn’t. Every single change on those patch notes consumes much more time then you realize. Meetings, testing, problem solving, analysis, collaboration, coding, more testing, theory, and even more testing. I’m sure they are aware of many of the bugs you are are all worried about, but bugs in particular are the hardest of things to squash. You have to fix it without breaking anything else, and that requires an incredible amount of testing that I don’t think a non-programmer would understand.
Short and sweet, it’s evident they are working on it. The Engineer isn’t the only profession with problems. Things will get fixed, but every patch won’t fix “everything”. Just have some patience, which needs to be on the order of many multiples of months. Actually, I think the best advice would be to not even wait for patches. Play what is here, if you don’t like it move on.
I completely understand it takes time, that a patch does not fixes everything.
If you buy something tou want it to be good, you want it to be finished, I paid 60 euros.
Those 60 euros give me right to complain, it does not give arena net the right to ask us to be patient. We are the customers not they.
I actually do not think it’s funny we got so little bug fixes. Wepaid for this game, they ask me to be patient but WE are the customers not they.
We demand them to fix things, but they don’t. They do not have any right to ask us to be patient.
Work harder!
Well bakimono says, that it takes time. Actually don’t forget we are customers. We paid for this game, so I want it to be good, but my proffesion gets everytime very few bug fixes! We just can’t say: “we have to patient, it takes time” no, Anet should work harder, they already are excpecting i am patient!
And i can tell you I’m not!
Yea, there is another thread on this forum, where we discuss if engineers are agro grabers, even if we dont want to…
No not just a female bug, my shield is floating too…
Too bad I can’t open your link… It says: bad link.
Fix Flamethrower's Flame Blast! Unreliable 90% of the time!

I agree. But isn’t slot 2 napalm ball?
I sure think napalm ball is a useless skills, it provides less damage then the regular attack, and it misses ALL the time!
Priory engineer results already coming in!
The other class mainly give the same things as we did: some say they catch agro alot, others say they don’t.
Conclusion: we are still down to nothing -.-"
Dear fellow engineers,
I just posted the followint text on every class sub forum:
“Dear elementalists,
I am an engineer, and after some big discussions on our engineer forum, we still got our question unanswered:
Are engineers agro-grabbers?
Now too answer this question, we need you fellow adventurers to help us! :p
So now is our question to you as elementalists: do you catch much agro?
I hope you guys can help me, but I believe you can since you rain fire down on me in PvP alot!
Thanks in advance!”
So my hope is now other classes wil help us, so we really can see id we are agro-grabbers!
Check it out!
Well on the hand of bad looking armor sets: yes medium armour really sucks, only the masker/head thing is kinda diffirent.
But what is the purpose of revealing armor? You play games for it’s gameplay. Also the suggestion of being tired of exploring and chill out in the game? Taking an in-game brake?!
I think your a bit too much into this game…
Well actually I must agree. While many reviews said (IGN) that gw2 was great due to its natural way of grouping people, that is actually not true!
Sure those people are standing together but they are just soloing together. When I wanted to do a personal story mission together (just because it is more fun the. Doing it alone) I got laughed at!
It would be great If Anet makes not only dungeons, but also story issions or parts of the map in need for grouping.
I agree had some food for my complete party (4 mails) and was surpressed!
I’d really like to see more skills.
I’m playing as an engineer, we got 24 utility skills, 3 elites and 12 weapon skills. That is 39 skills in total. I actually find that ridicoulesly low! GW1 had due too its combined class system over 2000/3000 skills! That of course is kinda overexagerrated to do, but at least Anet could let us know if future expansions come with more skills.
Now let me get straight: I know GW2 is a diffirent game and I really like it, but I just think more skills would contribute a whole lot too the game.
I also now every class is different, warrior has many weapons and therefor more skills, engineer has weaponkits and so on. But still with all those factors I think there is a little amount of skills in this game.
I actually want more skills! Off-topic, yea but it needs to be said. 24 skills and 3 elites? C’mon! I want a wide variety of explosives guns and other crazy stuff to choose from. I really do not get why Anet didn’t put in more skills.
I actually really miss switching weapons/ lack of weapons.
There are 3 weapon sets, and 1 underwater weapon. It doesn’ give you that much choice, although you find engineers playing with every weapon set.
I love the engineer :p. They are really diverse and score on every role, they are a great support class but he can change into dps really fast. Many dungeon runs use an engineer in their party. The toolbelt gives you loads of extra options (+4 extra skills is really nice), and the most important thing:
FLAMETHROWER!
Well we need to do research. We could seek out what ‘attracts’ mobs.
But in the other hand, many other classes have the some though of being an agro-graber.
But I guess they are wrong then :p
Crossbows would work. But there are also suggestions on hammer, which I like more for engineer then bow.
But, yea: we need more weaponchoice!
On another note: does it ever actually transform you into the whirlwind? Because that’s never happened for me, ever. My engineer basically carries around the warrior elite in a bottle.
It happens very rare about 1/10 is whirlwind.
And that seems like a nice trick! Definitly gonna try it once, but won’t use in battle. Too much thinking involved while killing my ene, ies.
I agree! Bash that steel with my HAMMER! mUHuahahauha
Rocket turret is by far the strongest turret. But I’d go net turret together with thumper aand rocket. It gives you more control on the battlefield. If someone gets bonked away by the thump overcharge th netturret fires it’s snares while the rocket turret spams rockets and you keep firing!
I’d like to know on what npcs base their agro. Distance/damage/burstdamage/armour, whatever it is it helps alot in controlling a fight.
But the devsv might never releave that informtation
.
I am not sure but I guess it’s bugged then.
Well, one of the problems of the engineer is, you can’t switch weapons. Leaving alone if that is unfair, its a complete diffirent discussion, playing with rifle is best for killing thieves. But what if i want to play dual pistol or pistol shield? You won’t have such an effective snare like net shot neither you have a dk (distance-keeper) like overcharged shot.
You’ll always have an advantage playing with a rifle.
Norn engineer it is. Wheredo you think all those mountains an craters come from?
I really love my engineer, it’s such a diverse class and so I always team up with my guildmates (who welcome an engineer in their party) for some dungeon runs.
And I wondered if engineers are so called agro-grabers. Bosses always target me first, in the 9 times we did TA I got transformed in a cat 8(!) times by this 3th champion in storymode.
Is this because I’m just an aggresive player who jumps up a boss his back as first, or are engineers agro-grabers? I always thought warriors and melee classes where the biggest agro-grabers.
You might give a long bow / trap ranger a try.
Or a flamethrower build on your engi. It’s less key intensive, does ok damage, is not long range, but still not full on melee, and has a lot of area control with the right utility / weapon choices.
I agree. Flamthrower still gives mass AoE damage, (not long range though) and with firearms trait 30 you’ll enter ‘juggernaut mode’ which gives you +200 thougness!
Gives some nice survivabillity.
I actually never use grenade kit, only its toolbelt skill barrage. In PvP i can do lots of damage without weaponkits. Just use Elixer B, flamethrower gives you this really nice toolbelt skill (3 times burning).
I loved to save my builds in gw1.
Why isn’t such thing in GW2?
It was always really nice I could load on my builds in 1 second.
GW2 should get such a system too.
What do you guys think of such system?
Sorry for my english btw, it’s not my native language.
I went Order of Whispers, because the idea of being a sniper, and escaping by blowing up my way back was just the collest idea
.
I actually usenweaponkits as the grenade kit, flamethrower and elixer gun too spam even more condtions. But your build looks good.
I acutally was asking myself the same question. I always get killed by thieves. They always go invisible, spam a enormous amount of damag and go underground again!
I always try to hit them with my flamethrower, but it’s not really a ‘thiev killer’
