Only Mesmers and Necromancers have worse range dps.
Unless you count epidemic and confusion stacking, then they do WAY more damage than barrage.
For single target, the ranger is excellent. Max range is extremely important for zerg fights. A half dead player soon becomes a full health player.
In addition to Off-Hand Training recharge and range, the damage bonuses are flat. So while a warrior does 5% more damage while wielding an offhand axe, that affects his main hand as well. When a ranger does 10% more damage when his endurance is full, that applies to the warhorn.
Edit: Since the topic is now confusing, the OP was asking about improving offhand weapons.
1) Ranger
2) Elementalist
3) Warrior (nerf)
I often do not understand what is going on so give me heavy armor and max health.
This is a hot topic in WvW.
Personally (and I know a lot of rangers prefer this) I use a wolf and drakehound. I can also recommend a wolf and jungle spider.
I play as a roamer and zerg surfer. Keep your pets on you and pick off things like thieves, eles, necros, wounded warriors and etc. CC pets pick off the edges of the zerg.
You’ll get some answers from people who like to ride in the middle of zergs like pigs and bears and drakes. Those are probably people throwing traps or going full-on greatsword damage tank.
In PvP rangers are regarded as the best or at least tied for best defense classes available. Rangers are VERY strong.
WvW you need to be a skilled player to succeed as a ranger. Do what you will with that. Maybe it’s unfair, maybe not.
And maybe I’m vain, but my PvE ranger seems a hell of a lot more useful to the party than most of the population. Daily CoF runs are interesting to see what kind of garbage people are playing with. I’m generally “tanking” in full zerker gear, with spotter and FS and etc, doing most of the damage.
Warriors have bigger burst with a rifle, but I’ve found rangers to be more practical because of the huge range. What is the real range of a longbow? I’ve heard 2100.
Wonder if there is any chance this will open up the Dominion of Winds.
Howler drives me insane that I have to swing my sword every time I use it or else listen to that 1.5 second sound loop forever. I still like the horn, I just wish they either varied the howling noise or made it stop right after you use it.
Most of the damage I take is from players seeing a glass LB ranger and going for an ‘easy’ kill. If I see another longbow ranger I usually target them even before the eles just because so many people run builds like the one you posted.
For your build it would be unavoidable death when someone targets you. Again zero escape plans, you have no mobility skill, no stun breaker, no condition removal, no vigor, no protection, no CC, no blocks, no invulnerability, no anything. For naphack’s modification, you can at least survive long enough for them to lose interest, if not properly defend yourself and kill them.
And what makes your build even weirder is that your damage is barely higher than mine or naphack’s builds, yet yours is helpless and ours can win 1v1s.
It’s not my theory really, it’s community common knowledge and what’s on the wiki. I just have never had an opportunity to test it or know how it got to be common knowledge, so I can’t say with certainty it’s true.
If you’re all stacked, the pet will be furthest from the center of the AoE and not ever get hit. With a player dead the pet will get hit every time.
I’m like 72% sure hostile AoE prioritizes whatever is closest to the center of the AoE circle.
Based on how the crit damage and rune changes go, I was thinking about Divinity runes. It’s way too early to tell right now though since they said 100% of runes are getting changed. I recommend getting some cheap runes for the time being. You’d hate to drop a fortune on Scholar runes and have them be worthless in a few months.
The original line as mentioned in the twitch the other day was “I feel four feet tall!” Which for you euros is the size of an 9 year old human or so. Shame that didn’t stay in.
It doesn’t even give you any info or take time to commune anymore, it’s just boom, skillpoint added to your character. You’d think they could at least add a sentence about the ancient shark or something.
What do you use Bolt with? Make Howler or Incinerator?
Elementalist, Necromancer, Thief and Ranger have a 25% speed increase signet. Of those signets, one has a useful active (Thief).
If traited, Signet of the Hunt gives not just the pet but the ranger a 25% damage boost. Which is… potent, shall we say.
It’s also called a ‘rallybot’ (you have zero defense.)
If you enjoy this playstyle, maybe try a staff ele.
If you are dying all the time with a selfish 1500 range build like this you are doing something VERY wrong, then again many players running this are new-ish to the game, so fumbling around in fractals is normal.
My point is he doesn’t have a back up plan at all. I use LB for roaming, and will often go all “special forces” on a zerg fight. I can confidently get towards the squishy underside of a zerg or not die if the zerg heads right towards me because I’ve got things like a 1H sword, lighting reflexes, muddy terrain, vigor, protection, better pets, etc. The posted build can only survive if no one targets you.
30/25/0/15/0
It’s the PvE build, and I just swap traits for WvW. And then watch wars rage when I beat them with a PvE build. :-P
congrats on your zerker ranger with more than 19k hp in full zerker gear, /clap.
I run around with a little over 20k. I am in full ascended berserker, have the guard buffs though. Not that any of this is relevant, I just wanted my congrats!
What kind of cosmetic skins, like other pets or like an armor, like the armored bears in that movie, The Golden Compass
Do yourself a favor and read the books. That was the worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life.
This is a stereotypical ‘bearbow’, which is held in very low regard by the entire GW2 community. It’s also called a ‘rallybot’ (you have zero defense.)
If you enjoy this playstyle, maybe try a staff ele.
I’m all for color vs color rather than world vs world, but if this trend continues they need to make maps that are little less funhouse and tone down the NPCs a bit. Playing in the EotM makes me severely miss basic keep sieges and open fields.
Spirit, trap, and shout builds (or any combo of those) are all completely viable and mainstream. There are plenty of acceptable hybrid builds mostly revolving around the 1h sword. Then there are fringe builds like beast master or something that people can make work. One of the top teams was running a power ranger (can’t think of who immediately). Variety is excellent right now for rangers in PvP. More so than any other class, I have no idea what to expect when I see a ranger come at me.
People drastically underestimate how much damage pets do if you ignore them, and since all you see on the forums is pet trash talk, that plays right in to some berserker mesmer getting destroyed by a cat.
I also enjoy watching people with burnt CDs attempt to run from dogs.
there are probably less than 200 true achievement hunters left in the game, both EU and NA included. Thats very few considering GW2 is said to have 400k+ active players
worst of all Anet never answered to any of the threads concerning too many time consuming daily APs ever, they prefer to delete or lock them. Which I guess means the craps is here to stay
What you’re telling me is about 1% of 1% of 1% of the GW population is concerned about too many achievement points, and ANet isn’t removing a perfectly acceptable AP system because of that. Sounds good to me. In related news, I heard prohibition was repealed.
5 or 10 people attacking for real will do a heck of a lot more damage than those things. When you use the item you get big ol’ numbers like 500, then you swing your sword and autoattack cleave for 2 or 3k. The benefit is you can do both at once if you take the time to get the item and get in position, but… fun distraction only.
I dunno about “strong”. I see much bigger numbers from my ranger’s barrage, which is like a third as strong as an ele meteor shower.
I think WvW is the place to park her. I bought berserker CoF armor since I had 9,000 tokens doing nothing. I have 10,000 WvW badges so I think I’ll try a tanky roamer? And maybe try out the berserker gear on a staff zerg ele on the off chance I’ll like it. Thanks.
Hybrid isn’t limbo when you’re talking about a PvP class that has clear hybrid tendencies.
Why compare the cleave of melee weapons to cleave of a ranged weapon? Obviously the melee is going to do more damage. All three weapons hit up to 3 targets.
Also, as has been noted, the MH axe is for PvP/roaming. You can’t really complain about an ele staff being bad in hot join when it’s clearly not meant to do that.
If we could use it while moving I’d be extremely thrilled with it the way it is. It’s nice to have one AoE, I’d hate to lose even that.
I almost have my last profession (ele) up to level 80. My main is a ranger that is pretty decked out, equipment wise. She uses a 1 handed sword because I like really active, high-risk/high-reward play. I currently play ONLY that ranger in every area; WvW, fractals, dungeons, PvP, world bosses, etc.
But I like the active playstyle the ele offers, something I think many of the other professions are lacking. I’ve been using scepter/dagger to level her, and it feels very similar to ranger sword/dagger or warhorn. I also like D/D.
My question is, where can I put this ele in the play rotation? I know eles are sort of frowned upon in tPvP. Is S/D something that is commonly used in dungeon speed runs? I hear eles are a big part of WvW, but using the staff is like the worst thing that’s ever happened to me; it’s just so boring. Is D/D still a solo roaming thing? I rarely run in to eles when I’m roaming on my ranger.
Just sort of confused where eles are wanted or good at the moment. And is berserker used in all formats?
That’s been a problem with all ranged weapons since launch.
That looks pretty similar to my preferred ranger set up. It’s not as effective as something like spirits, but it’s the most fun possible in PvP in my opinion. #swordlove
Warhorn has been a blast finisher for ages. Like… a year or something.
Listening to the few trolls that will insist that this map is great, will keep the pvp in this game in an everlasting downed state.
I didn’t realize my opinion was wrong and I was trolling you until you pointed that out. Thank you kind sir! You have a cheerful and pleasant way of helping us all. God bless you.
I generally am around 100% crit chance or even higher, so I use berserkers. Don’t forget to take in to account all the fury rangers get when you’re looking at this.
I’m happy whenever any new map is added because there are so few. +1 for Skyhammer.
And it’s definitely not my least favorite map. I wouldn’t be devastated if they made the cannon dodgeable though.
The shout build is one of about 3 builds people typically run in WvW. It’s generally a roaming build. Keep in mind the regen and swiftness is only applied to 5 targets.
Black Bear
Black bear occasionally has its moments. Fractal bosses come to mind based on party composition. It’s not something you brag about, but it is the best bear pet.
For PvP or WvW, using anything other than a wolf is borderline unacceptable. It has 2 interrupts and a cripple. That’s why he listed it as god tier. It is REALLY good.
Drakehound is probably the closest second, but immobilize can be cleansed and it is hard to hit fleeing targets. (Fear can be cleansed but it’s too late by then.)
Dogs also are sturdy and have good autoattacks.
Highest one wins. Really simple.
Edit: Your.

WvW is fun because you want your server to be well represented (whether that’s through winning or just putting up good PvP fights.) EotM doesn’t have that so it needs to be a “funhouse”.
People ALWAYS complain about new content they can’t go on autopilot for. Give it some time and you’ll stop killing yourself.
I fell off the map and swam to one of the borderlands. :-O
Ugh god, this thread gets made once a day.
The pet is never going away. Ranger is the GW2 pet class, they should have named it beastmaster. Deal with it or play warrior.
For a commander I would definitely take a GS. Axe is ranged which is not where you want the commander to be attacking from. Plus you’re going to want to be 100% tank, and GS will help with that.
The only other melee weapon we have is definitely not appropriate for a commander. The 1h sword bounces you all over the place, and there is no way a zerg could stay on you.
Whoops, though you said WHERE. I just took it a few minutes ago.
