CDI seems to be an attempt towards those ideals, but 1 person can’t make the difference, especially since that one person is not experienced in all areas in the game as a player.

Call me skeptical, but I don’t think the CDI’s have borne much fruit yet.

Yeah, this game is totally free.

It’s not like I had to pay $60.00 or anything like that in the first place to play it and I’m sure the Gem Store is solely there for charitable purposes.

Not to mention that those proceeds have been put into the China release. Thanks ANet!

Gw2 most grindy game ever..?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Flytrap.8075

Flytrap.8075

To answer the original question.
GW2 is in an odd place on the game grind scale.
To put it simple.

If, as a player you have a goal ( ex: I want that expensive skin, or full ascended or a legendary or even more legendaries ) then the game becomes one of the most grindy games on the western market.

If you don’t have a goal, then it becomes one of the most shallow games you ever played. Because there is nothing else. Especially for a level 80.

Basically.

Guild Wars 2 is essentially an endless gold sink; you farm whatever content until you have enough money to buy what you want from the vendor or the TP and you call it a day. In my opinion, there’s no sense of reward through actual gameplay.

Gw2 most grindy game ever..?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Flytrap.8075

I’d take WoW’s grind over this any day.

Seriously? If that is truly the case, then GW2 is most certainly not for you.

You might be right; I bought this game because I liked the GW2 Manifesto, but apparently they’ve taken a departure from said viewpoints.

No offense meant, but if you believe ANY mmo game company’s “manifesto”, then you’re being incredibly naive.

jmo

Stop saying “no offense meant” when that’s exactly what you’re trying to accomplish.

Regardless, the whole premise of GW2 was that it would be a different kind of MMO with a cosmetic end-game where you could enjoy the content that you actually want to play without fear of a gear treadmill. Not to mention that ANet “doesn’t make grindy games”.

Obviously, the game hasn’t stood up to its core principles since release. ANet has a tendency to tease players with a carrot-on-a-stick and I’ve learned to take anything that Colin says with a grain of salt.

Sorry, but I actually do mean “no offense meant”.

You, on the other hand, are arguing about a PvE point that you have absolutely no real experience with.

So who is being the hypocrite?

Mods, am sorry for this post, and feel free to infract me, but people arguing for the sake of arguing, with no real experience in a thread that is making a point about pugs in PvE……are just trying to stir the pot. Nothing else.

Again, my apologies if I am offending anyone and/or hijacking the thread. I am done with this completely pointless argument with someone who doesn’t even play PvE.

The grind in this game is across all game-modes. They’ve finally introduced gold sinks into sPvP, and it’s ridiculous how much gold it takes to fully gear out one character for WvW or dungeon runs… And that’s for one build.

My brother just got his first level 80 on Easter weekend and I was blown away with how long it took and how expensive it was to gear his character out; the megaserver changes made getting Temple gear super obnoxious and the rune and sigil updates resulted in a price hike in anything remotely desirable.

The fact that I spend almost all of my time in this game in WvW and sPvP is completely irrelevant, but feel free to continue the witch hunt.

At least in that game, there is an actual sense of progression and reward; when you finally get a drop from a boss that your guild has been struggling with, you feel like you earned it. In GW2, I just farm content until I finally have enough gold to buy whatever I want and grab it from the TP. The thrill, the rush…

So you’re saying that someone should call the police if they get kicked from a Fractal Group?

Good advice.

Nice strawman.

Sometimes it takes a strawman to counter a strawman.

At least my point still stands: getting kicked from your group for not running zerker is a real thing. A metaphorical gun to your head, if you will

You might see it that way, but I don’t.

When the guild I belong to does dungeon runs every Saturday, they don’t care what builds/experience and/or skill level shows up.

I don’t think I would want to run with dungeon pugs that kick a person for lack of a certain build, so no, it’s not even a metaphorical gun to my head.

The “gun to your head” part was referring to Dalanor’s post.

Anyway, not everyone has a guild that they can run Fractals and Dungeons with; sometimes you just have to pug.

P.S. – With all due respect, I don’t think you know what a strawman is.

What’s with you and gun references?

Regardless, people have been complaining about the stale meta throughout all game-modes for a long time now and ANet hasn’t really done much to address it; the ferocity nerf was a laughable change that did nothing to fix the prevalence of zerker in PvE and made condition builds that were already thriving in WvW and sPvP even stronger.

Players shouldn’t have to work around the system to play a game that they enjoy.

I don’t know about pve build diversity but if you play tPvP(solo/teamQ) you will see that ~90% of players use the single meta build of their class. There’s no creativity about builds because there isn’t enough traits, and many of existing ones are unbalanced. One build or trait combination becomes op and every player starts to use it. They just copy and paste it without developing new playstyles/techniques. For an example, all warriors were using the same hambow+regen build for months.

There’s only so much you can do with such a limited skill and weapon pool.

In my opinion, ANet gave us way too many ways to mess around with our stat values and not enough ways to customize our action bar.

Well kitten me, I may not be the brightest bulb of the bunch but even I can see that you can’t consider LS as content…

In all fairness, by this very logic, a game you missed out on and cannot obtain again isn’t a game. A book that has fallen out of print before you could obtain a copy is not a book. A TV show that no channel can be bothered to rerun is not a TV show (this would absolutely kill soap operas).

It’s like saying the Eiffel Tower doesn’t exist if you haven’t seen it with your own eyes as opposed to though other media.

Hyperbole at its finest.

Not really. You could get hit by a bus or struck by the severed engine of an aircraft or something before you get to see it.

Comparing ANet’s Living Story to the actual living story of real life is simply ridiculous and illogical. “Oh, I never met Abraham Lincoln before he died so therefore he’s not a real person!”.

Nevertheless, temporary content is not real content; it’s a cheap, shallow alternative, and it happens to only be active for two weeks. Yes, I can play it while it’s active… And then it’s gone. Video game content is by its very definition stuff that you can experience in said game.

If my favorite series stops airing, I can always watch it online. If a book I want to read isn’t in print anymore, there are always libraries. However, even if I wanted to relive my Scarlet experience for old times sake (and I don’t), there’s absolutely no way for me to go about doing so.

We need permanent updates with actual substance that can add some depth and variety to this game that has grown stagnant and dull.

This way, it doesn’t matter what gears the Mesmers run in WvW their Mass Invis and Time Warp remain to be excellent utilities.

So you’re arguing that Warriors, Guardians, and Mesmers are super popular in high-end PvE because they have enough latent utility that they can abuse the stagnant DPS meta?

It always amuses me how people can take a statement of intention as a promise.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/

July 2013:
“We’re a little over halfway through the year, and we felt it was time to give you an update on where we stand, where we’re going, and discuss in more detail some of the systems you’ll see in the second half of 2013.

We’ll begin regularly adding new skills and traits to the game for each profession to expand your characters and builds! You will be able to earn these new traits and skills by unlocking them. To go along with this, we’ll expand the content and options to earn skill points to help encourage players to experience different challenges and content throughout the world. These skills and traits will be designed to be balanced with the existing skills/traits we currently have in the game, and will simply compliment and expand the range of abilities and tactics available to each profession. Both WvW and PvE players can acquire skills and traits, and additional means of earning skill points will be addressed for both core content areas.

The addition of new skills and traits on a regular basis will of course mean expanded variety of abilities, builds, and tactics in PvP as well. As these additional skills and traits are added, they’ll be automatically unlocked and available for competitive PvP just like all existing skills/traits work today."

Pretty bold statements (wow, I’m so punny).

No, I hardly buy anything in this game with real money.

My argument is that the pay shop devalues everything in this game and just highlights what a huge grind it is. Take a new level 80, for instance. You need a set of exotic armor and accessories, runes and upgrades for each, fill out any weapons that you might need, add in some sigils, and don’t forget food and your other buff.

And that’s all just for one specific build. Guild Wars 2 may not have a gear treadmill in the traditional sense, but it’s definitely there.

Future Looks Bright :)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Flytrap.8075

Flytrap.8075

OK, but bear in mind that “negative and positive” are subjective. That means what I consider a negative others may see as neutral or positive. In the interest of brevity I’ll only address a few issues, which will hopefully illustrate my point.

Exploration Playstyle: The game launched with many zones, and in those zones were both “official” objectives (the ones that counted for world completion) and “easter eggs,” in the form of nooks and crannies that had interesting stuff. It’s been 20 months since launch, which generally means that “explorer” players have explored those zones many times. What’s been added for explorers? One permanent zone, with no “official” objectives and few if any “easter eggs.” One small, temporary zone, which had ~45 sun crystals to reach and which is not currently available. The negative for explorers is that the launch content is stale and little to nothing has been added. If you’re not an explorer, it’s at worst a neutral.

Endgame Pursuits: The game launched with the promise of cosmetic endgame. Many looks existed, however, few of these skins were tied to endgame pursuits. Outside of the dungeon looks, the level 80 crafted, the T3 cultural and the one karma set, most everything else was a pre-80 look. The only looks that have been added are: some weapons available as drops, the back-piece of the week, and store armor/weapons. This is not enough to fuel an ongoing cosmetic endgame. There is little to no prestige attached to any look, outside of (maybe) Arah armor back before path-selling. Even legendary weapons don’t convey the prestige they could because they can be bought. Cosmetics were being asked to fuel endgame and to serve as a source of revenue. Essentially, the cosmetic endgame has been replaced with a stat chase. Throwing some numbers on gear is a lot less expensive than making new looks – especially if you don’t bother planning it out carefully — which is evident with Ascended gear. Also, while the new wardrobe helps to some degree, in that it encourages collecting looks across your account, it still does not make collecting looks on one character any more desirable. These things are negatives for some people, not for others.

Dungeons: Since launch, Fractals has been added; they’ve revised three AC paths, nerfed AC story and substituted TA-Aether for a launch path. While fractals is not “nothing,” it’s not a lot, either. Dungeons are also cost-intensive and have a limited pay-off. Absent rewards, their longevity is poor. It’s a lot more cost-effective to produce content that will be used by players en masse, especially if you are placing it in maps that already exist, or if the detail in any new maps is less than was found in the launch zones. Again, positive for some, negative for others.

Now, if you look at these issues and analyze them, you begin to see a pattern. I don’t blame any company for wanting to get the most return for their investment. However, what this has meant for GW2 over the last 20 months is that things I consider negatives are being emphasized and things I would consider positives are being ignored. Thus, while the future may or may not be bright for GW2 as a business tool, the future for me as a consumer of the service looks dim.

At least someone gets it.

But Guild Wars 2 is all about Exploration. And Exploration levels your character. I don’t know what you are after, but the zones of GW2 are beautiful, and exploring them is fun.

Exploring gets old fast when you’ve already explored said zones.

The problem with leveling a new character when you already have three or more 80’s is that you’ve already done everything there is to do and ANet hasn’t really released any new content to alleviate the process.

Flytrap.8075

I’ve gotta say… GW2 has the most casual (and FAST) leveling of any MMO I’ve played in the last decade. If you find this “painful” you may want to find another genre entirely.

Respectfully disagree.

Leveling in Guild Wars 2 is extremely dull; once you’ve gotten your weapon skills and all of the utilities that you want, there’s not much to look forward to. I guess the trait changes were aimed to help alleviate the level 30-80 burnout feeling, but in my opinion, it’s just not enough.

Leveling your first character was a new and interesting experience. Leveling the second was manageable because you simply went where you hadn’t gone before. Leveling the third? Fourth? Fifth? It’s just a chore at this point.

We need some added depth and variety to keep things interesting. New weapon combinations, utilities, and elites for each profession would go a long way.

Also if you really want challenges, you can create them. Solo or duo dungeons without skipping or stacking in walls. Heck play it even naked.

But .. nearly nobody does that because .. and there it is again .. it doesn’t give better rewards. The whole challenge is just wasted time because people don’t enjoy the challenge itself but only the greater reward-

I stick to sPvP and WvW for a reason: the PvE in this game is mind-numbingly dull.

Replacement for celestial/divinity/dyes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Flytrap.8075

Flytrap.8075

I don’t notice that to be the case at all. Exotics are still way cheaper than they were even 6 months after launch. It used to cost a whole lot more to gear a character. With shared Ascended items, it’s even less money actually.

I respectfully disagree.

It’s now harder than ever to get Temple Armor and the rune/sigil changes resulted in a price hike for anything that is even slightly desirable. I helped my brother gear out his first 80 last weekend and it was an absolute pain coupled with sticker shock.

After this last “feature patch” I believe offering people that had divinity runes and celestial gear the opportunity to replace those items would have been the right thing to do, considering that:
1- Celestial and Divinity runes do not fufill the same function as they did when we paid for them
2- Some of us spent real money on gems in order to accelerate the speed of acquisition of that gear
3- Some of us spent months crafting celestial ascended gear (I didn’t fortunately) or acquiring laurels for celestial trinkets (that I did)
4- We spent in average 60g on divinity runes, celestial ascended mats cost well over 200g
5- To those of us who had the gear match the build for precise stats our characters are totally broken (~40% critical damage reduction on a character using full celestial gear and divinity runes)

All in all I had to spend about 80g to re-gear my character to be playable again and I’m still not done yet.

Xillix, I empathize with your current situation completely.

I honestly have no desire to play my Elementalist at the moment because re-gearing her out is just going to be a massive undertaking. When you throw the nerf to Meteor Shower through its AoE indicator into the equation, I just don’t even want to touch my Staff Ele because we’ve been once again pigeon-holed into Support builds.

On the bright side of things, at least Ele’s got some nice changes in sPvP.

Why is zerging so encouraged in this game?

A challenge is mostly fine once, but if you’ve beaten it, and it comes down to farming its mostly just annoying.

There needs to be a middle-ground.

I agree that events like Triple Trouble are over the top, but I personally prefer a challenge to the mindless 1111111 spam that we currently have.

It amazes me how expensive it is to gear up a new 80 or just change your build around.

This game has become one massive gold sink.

cause scarlet 1.0 wasnt content right?

I’m glad we’re finally on the same page.

To elaborate, the first Living Story season had some good aspects to it; for instance, I thought the Zephyr Sanctum update and the Queen’s Jubilee boss fights were really cool additions and I hoped that the subsequent patches would be similar in nature.

However, what we ended up with afterwards was a flood of PvE zerg content that I can’t return to even if I wanted to. What ANet sells as “content” is nothing more than a temporary world event tied to Gemstore Updates and a laundry list of tedious, dry achievements.

The Living Story was a good idea that had potential, but the execution was way off.

My guess is never. I mean, people have been asking for rewards that are specific to WvW and sPvP since this game was released and they’re still not completely here.

You’ll get a post about how the Balthazar back piece is unique to sPvP and then they’ll vanish into the darkness as if one item will appease your concerns.
