Everything you said is 100% exactly how most if not all of us seasoned mmo players feel. It’s those that have never played an mmo before gw2 or are just starting to play mmos that will disagree with you.
Good job and excellent commentary.

It’s beyond absurd to speak for anyone other than yourself on matters like this. Assigning your view to an entire community is nothing more than a blatantly-arrogant attempt at making your opinions seem more legitimate. For instance, I played WoW for four or five years before GW2, and, apart from the “first MMO” wonder and magic of WoW, I feel that GW2 is superior in just about every way. So stop trying to speak for me; it’s disgraceful.

Seasoned MMO player here.

Don’t feel that way.

Do you two even know how to read? I said “MOST” Do you know what that means? It means NOT EVERYONE. I’m sorry the public school system failed you. Move on.

I’ll posit the same question to you. I said that it’s ridiculous to speak for anyone other than yourself, and yourself alone, and your retort is “I only said most people, not all?” That’s not a valid defense to my complaint.

Really? These are the most pedantic comments I have ever seen. Can’t you address the issue instead of nitpicking like a grammarian with an unabridged dictionary?

No one believes that anyone here speaks for everyone else.

Or at the very least look up hyperbole first.

(Edit: initial comment about the worst comments I have ever seen were an intentional use of hyperbole, just in case you missed it.)

It’s ad hominem; when you can’t come up with a good enough argument, you simply fixate on one aspect of a post or the author’s history that doesn’t even relate and try to discredit them based on that.

Oh, your post used “your” instead of “you’re”; you’re obviously mentally handicapped and know nothing cy@.

Why moaning about conditions?

I never said that it didn’t. I pointed out in my last post that you can dodge Signet of Spite, however, the issue with that is that condition builds are very spammy in nature and have a lot of ways to apply more conditions to you.

What I agree on is that we have conditions which are:

  • Individually too weak.
  • Too many.

However do keep in mind that someone primarily utilizing direct damage is “spamming” direct attacks constantly, too. This is no different from say a Necro spamming his condition-applying auto-attack.

When a thief is killing you, is it his 1k auto-attacks that are the real issue, or the 8k backstab that you took?

I mean, I get where you’re coming from; I’ve been hit by 4-5k longbow autos from a zerker Ranger before. However, in order for them to reach that point, they had to go full-glass and will obviously melt if you ever connect with them.

For most condition builds, this is simply not the case.

How long does it take for your endurance bar to refill for a dodge?

Now, how long does it take for your condition removal via a weapon or utility skill to come off cooldown?

Only, that dodge works against the condition, too.

I never said that it didn’t. I pointed out in my last post that you can dodge Signet of Spite, however, the issue with that is that condition builds are very spammy in nature and have a lot of ways to apply more conditions to you.

Yes, I dodged Signet of Spite. Now what? I still have to deal with Necro spamming their bleed/poison attack chain on me. I still have to deal with the conditions they can apply through Deathshroud. I still have to deal with conditions they can apply through their other weapon skills.

At least when I dodge a backstab or a warrior burst skill, it actually means something. When you dodge a power build’s key ability, you outplayed them and they know it. When you dodge against a condition build, they just go along with it and apply more conditions.

Flytrap.8075

Now, guess what? Condition removal is finite. You can always dodge a backstab. You can always block a warrior’s burst skill. Simply put, there are a lot of things that you can do to outplay a power build. However, with conditions, if your condition removal is on cooldown and they’re reapplied to you during that duration, you’re generally kittened.

You can always dodge a Backstab? You always have enough Endurance, and you can watch its telegraph to dodge its animation? You always dodge the second Backstab that follows after the first misses?

You can always block a Warrior’s burst? Your blocks are always off of cooldown, so you can just always get the block off?

Oh, but with conditions, we’re analyzing when all of your condition removal is down. Never mind when you’re out of Endurance/Block/Evasion/Invuln, you can always counter Power damage, but Condi, when removal is down, you apparently can’t dodge/block/evade/blind/invuln their application.

Here, I’m going to give you an argument to use: with condition application, the pressure is spread out so evenly that the effectiveness of your dodge is minimized. With Power, damage is often front-loaded onto an ability or two that, if you dodge, can help swing a fight in your favor. If you dodge/block some condition application, you’re still probably taking some pressure. If you dodge power pressure, you’re probably taking minimal (depending).

Use that, please. Say that you can’t dodge the 5 stacks of interrupt confusion from Perplex runes because, by its definition, they have to interrupt one of your actions.

But don’t act like you can’t avoid condition application in every single way that you can avoid power application.

I already edited my post to more accurately give my argument, but you quoted my original post and jumped the gun.

How long does it take for your endurance bar to refill for a dodge?

Now, how long does it take for your condition removal via a weapon or utility skill to come off cooldown? Even then, how many conditions are removed? Were the conditions that were actually hampering you removed, or just the ones that were most recently applied?

Even if I dodge a Necro’s Signet of Spite, they still can just auto-attack me with their Scepter chain and start piling on bleed stacks and poison. If I dodge a Thief’s backstab, I can rest assured that I have a few seconds until their burst is available again and I still have another dodge open to me.

The fact of the matter is that every build has to invest in certain key aspects in order to survive against condition builds, whereas people who use condition builds simply have to learn to play and then they can handle any power builds.

Come at me.

I like how everyone who is defending conditions in this thread acts like anyone who is complaining is just some noob who wandered into WvW and doesn’t want to take condition removal.

Let me tell you a little secret: condition removal is mandatory; anyone who takes any aspect of WvW seriously, both zerging or roaming, realizes this. If a build can’t invest in condition removal through a heal skill or slotting certain utilities, you can bet your kitten that they’re going to take whatever traits they can find that give them access to condition removal.

Now, guess what? Condition removal is finite. You can always dodge a backstab and no class needs to invest in any traits, utilities, or weapon sets in order to have access to dodging. Furthermore, you’re allowed two dodges from the get-go and your endurance bar fills relatively quickly. However, with conditions, if your condition removal is on cooldown and they’re reapplied to you during that duration, you’re generally kittened.

It honestly baffles me that ANet would nerf critical damage when condition bunker builds have already been thriving in WvW and sPvP.

Some of you have to think long and hard about why they are still here.

Constructive criticism offers specific solutions, but some of you just like to indulge in negativity and you like it. Note I am saying some of you, not all.

Does this game really take up so much of your free-time even though you seem so displeased with everything? Why do you still play?

Why are you still here?

I tell you why! Because you like the complaining without offering construcive solutions, you like the people here that tell each other how everything was better in the past and how those times never come back and everything is kittenty and dumb and it sucks. You like that.

Find something positive, if it is not in this game, then just leave and come back later.

Oh, and some of you are just trolls, that’s for sure.

Sounds like you’re just upset that some people have found faults with a game that you personally enjoy.

The truth is Anet created a higher need for full zerk in pve with less tolerance for the person to slip in with a condi build of pvt. In wvw/pvp all they did was make condis stronger by nerfing direct damage.

So most builds will look like this for high game play in each mode

PvE = Full zerk no defense stats at all (higher skill cap, newer/less skilled players can’t pull it off.

PvP = Condi/Precision/Vit or tough builds will be very prevelant. Expect to see more condi warriors/necros/mesmers/thieves and less direct damage build (the entire guardian class).

WvW = Dire. Everywhere. All day. Buy the gear before the price goes through the roof.

And then all those Dire users get mowed down by a properly built and played power train in WvW.

If conditions are fine in WvW, they why do so many commanders and their hammer trains run Melandru runes with the ridiculously expensive Lemongrass Poultry food?

If conditions are fine in WvW, they why are they highly regarded as cheese builds amongst the roaming community?

If conditions are fine in WvW, they why do you think these threads exist in the first place?

Reading the standards set out in this article, GW2 has done everything that this article was bashing about “traditional” MMOs.

I have quoted a couple paragraphs, and then quote snippets from those paragraphs with examples from GW2 that are doing the same thing they were bashing.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/is-it-fun-colin-johanson-on-how-arenanet-measures-success/

“Now let me pose a second question: If the success of a subscription-based MMO is measured by the number of people paying a monthly fee, how does that impact game design decisions?”

“The answer can be found in the mechanics and choices made in subscription-based MMOs, which keep customers actively playing by chasing something in the game through processes that take as long as possible. In other words, they design content systems that take more time to keep people playing longer. If this is your business motivation and model so you keep getting paid, it makes sense and is an incredibly smart thing to do, and you need to support it.”

“When your game systems are derived and designed to fill this prime motivation of a subscription-based MMO, you potentially sacrifice quality to get as much content in as possible to fill that time. You get leveling systems that take insane amounts of grind to gain a level, loot drop systems that require doing a dungeon with a tiny chance the item you want can drop at the end, raid systems that need huge numbers of people online simultaneously to organize and play, thousands of wash/repeat item-collection or kill-mob quests or dailies with flavor text support, the best stat gear requiring crazy amounts of time to earn, etc.”

First: Gw2 has the same motivation to keep people playing as sub games do: income.

Keeping that in mind, while reading his second post, everything he says describes GW2.

“you potentially sacrifice quality to get as much content in as possible to fill that time”

Recycled art, combat, and zones, in Living Story.

They only incentive people have to do LS content is the cosmetic achievement or mini they reward you with for hours of grinding the same event, which is “Kill X, Collect Y, bring to Z”, just as much as any other MMO. In addition, they made it so the rewards of account achievement chests can be completed most easily by doing this LS grind. No one cares about the actual story or characters, as it all seems so superficial and forced.

“get leveling systems that take insane amounts of grind to gain a level”

Fractals, account achievement chests, WxP, ’nough said.

" loot drop systems that require doing a dungeon with a tiny chance the item you want can drop at the end"

Precursor drop rates? In addition, if you get your gear through dungeon tokens, the limitations on token rewards has turned it into a grind to get your gear as well.

“raid systems that need huge numbers of people online simultaneously to organize and play”

Megabosses, Scarlet world events, WvW (which is the only thing I do in GW2 now) etc

“thousands of wash/repeat item-collection or kill-mob quests or dailies with flavor text support”

All your LS content is wash/repeat. GW2 daily achievement laurels are your daily flavor text.

“the best stat gear requiring crazy amounts of time to earn, etc.”

Legendary items, ascended gear.

I’m glad you did this so i didn’t have to. You are SO right! Guild Wars 2 has turned into everything they promised it would not be. That, coupled with the fact that there is very little new content since launch, have really turned me off this game.

Sadly, it appears that we’re the beta for the China release.

Instead, you’ve never gotten another dime from me, beyond the initial purchases. Every time I have been tempted to buy gems, I think about how greedy it felt during the 2012 halloween event when the BL Chest drop rate for the halloween weapons was stupendously low. I remember all the content that was removed. I think about all the minor (unvoiced by me, but pointed out many times here by others) complaints I’ve had that were never fixed, and the fact that there is not going to be any expansion any time soon, when it should have been here or have been announced, at the least.

Posts like this are always so bizarre and disingenuous, specifically for the argument here (which always seems to come about in some way or another). You’re saying you’ve been tempted to buy gems, but refrained because of a previous complaint, which ArenaNet has massively improved at this point? Gem store weapons like the Halloween set have been made hugely more accessible, yet you still refuse to buy any because they used to be a problem? Why should ArenaNet ever address any of your concerns, if you’re just going to cling to past issues as an excuse to criticize them in the future, even after those issues have been fixed and improved?

For all your complaints, you sound like the type of person who will never be satisfied, no matter how close ArenaNet manages to bring the game to your ideal fantasy.

Most of his critiques are about the game itself, not the gem store that you used the fanboi generic response on after focusing in on it.

That sole example is enough demonstrate the disingenuous nature of this post. The poster prefaces by claiming to have ‘goodwill’ towards the game and wanting the opportunity to support the game, yet they then refuse to genuinely acknowledge any improvements that have been made to it. The poster clings to past ‘offenses’ while completely disregarding any attempt by ArenaNet to address and correct those issues, simply so he or she can continue to deride and insult the game and its developer for failing to live up to a personal fantasy. Someone who truly had ‘goodwill’ towards the game, someone who truly wanted to support the game and see it improve, would at least be somewhat forgiving, at least acknowledge the efforts to address some of their complaints. But no, what we see instead is petty, unhelpful venting.

You would think someone who claims to have so much experience with past MMOs and other games would possess the discipline to not let themselves get so hyped about their fantasy for a game. So hyped that its inevitable failure to live up to expectations crushes them to the point of such shallow, one-sided whining. You would think that someone with such experience would know to play a game for what it is in the present, not what they want it to be in the future. You would think that someone who had such a bad taste with the gem store methods two months after launch would know to quit back then, rather than stick around for an extra year and a half playing a game that so obviously failed to live up to expectations.

The problem is that ANet themselves perpetuate this hype; they tease updates and potential features that are either not the same as what they advertised, way further down the line than as initially planned, or simply not feasible and never actually come to fruition.

I would love to see ANet prove me wrong and release some actual content that introduces meaningful depth and variety to this game; it’s the main reason I’ve stuck around for so long. Judging from Blood’s post, he shares the same sentiment. This game could have been great… by all means, it should have been great. However, somewhere along the way, ANet deviated from their initial Manifesto and now here we are with Gold Wars 2 / Gem Wars 2 / Fashion Wars 2 when what I cared about, paid for, and wanted to experience was Guild Wars 2.

I’m glad that some people are still enjoying this game and that they’re perfectly content with how things are going. Nevertheless, I don’t see myself sticking around much longer unless things start changing soon because everything about this game has become so stale.

the idea was to create progression sense, but the reality is they created a huge hole in progression.

have you actually played a chr at 20 without traits? nothing to look foward to at all for like 20-25 levels (because 30 only gives you access to one weak trait. If they wanted to add progression they needed to look elsewhere. The traits were actually a good part of the progression.

Maybe now they’ll realize how shallow the leveling experience truly is.

There’s simply not enough weapon sets, utilities, elites, or even traits to keep things interesting for eighty whole levels.

yes, because its always a good thing to make people have to grind more for gold in a game where the developers mentioned as one of their primary goals being to eliminate grind associated with MMO’s.

Although, its still a bit odd to see so many people complain about ways to make gold in the game.

I never saw the big deal about champion runs/trains/farming. It doesn’t hurt the community and gives players the chance to make money without having to devote 1200+ hours to get anything worthwhile

It’s basically making WvW an “endgame only” thing…

You shouldn’t be actively WvWing for your server if you’re an Uplevel. That just hurts your team’s efforts to win. You should consider leveling up, and mastering the new trait lines so that you can play efficiently.

But leveling up is dry, boring, and tedious; it’s even worse now with the new trait changes.

A lot of the game is base off that your going to go in down state if it was removed then you would need to scale down every one dmg by a great deal in pvp / wvw setting. One shot kill builds would be way too powerfully. That and you remove a good point for the match sources that havick groups use to show they are being useful to the weeks match. (Also you remove all the cool finisher from the game so they will NEVER remove downed states get that clear in your mind now or your never going to have a good time.)

As for pvd unless you have 40+ ppl attking a door its not going to effect the out come of how fast a door will drop (in that if you have a good number of ppl with you then you can build more rams cat etc.. so for every person you have with you that can attk the door they can also build more making the door drop faster anyway.)

The most reasonable suggestion would be to keep the down state but to implement the Dodgeball Rules that were suggested a while back where one stomp is equal to one rally.

One chase would not be too bad it would changes the game a lot i am not sure if it would fix any of the major problems but it would be fun say if you could mod spvp to have this rule to see if it works out well. As things stand i think its 3 to 4 chases atm. If its just 3 (seeing how humans love 3) that maybe just a stander. I think 2 is a good number of times that you can go down the 3ed is a full down but i feel each time you get back up you should be weaker just a bit and not just less hp.

I honestly have no idea what you’re trying to say.

I think that Blood has just created the best post in forum history. Not only are his criticisms completely accurate and spot-on, but they are also constructive and incredibly articulate. I applaud your efforts and empathize entirely with your misgivings about this game.

This game has gotten so stale and the Living Story and misguided dev priorities are entirely at fault. Instead of getting meaningful content that adds depth and variety to the game, we get biweekly achievement point laundry lists that are tied to dry and temporary content. On top of this, the entire game revolves around the beloved Gem Store and the best way to get rewards and access to new content is not through actual gameplay but rather through swiping your credit card.

As a big fan of the original Guild Wars, I had high hopes for this game and avidly followed it throughout its development. However, when I see what this game could have been and should have been versus where it is now, I can’t help but feel empty, bored, and albeit a little sad.

I’m tired of ANet shelving player concerns (check out the WvW and sPvP forums if you need a refresher). I’m tired of the extreme focus on temporary content and Gem Store additions. And most of all, I’m tired of the perpetual carrot-on-a-stick blog and dev posts that constantly suggest that some major, cool updates are on their way that ultimately fall through.

I’d like to hope that ANet can get their act together, but like Blood, I’m more than a little jaded at this point.

The addition of new skills and traits on a regular basis will of course mean expanded variety of abilities, builds, and tactics in PvP as well. As these additional skills and traits are added, they’ll be automatically unlocked and available for competitive PvP just like all existing skills/traits work today.

That last paragraph encompasses a lot of the problem I have with ANET. There is NO transparency because they say they risk being wrong or unable to deliver, yet they still end up going back on their word.

So, where another company is an open book and some info turns out to be false (making it a small % of incorrect info), Anet provides little info and some still turns out being false, making it a significant percentage of the info we’re given.

I’m always baffled by these threads. I know some of you people understand how programming works. So many things are dependent on other things, and you might not even realize change A broke system B until later on – and then you spend hours trying to reproduce the bug so you can fix it. It’s like you’re playing Jenga but some of the blocks are invisible so you don’t realize stuff was balanced on the block you pulled out until it collapses.

Even a seemingly insignificant change can have unexpected consequences. One person makes a text field slightly bigger (pets can now have 15-letter names instead of 12!*) and suddenly your whole game crashes.

Obviously they want to make sure as much of it works as possible, knowing that when they release it into the wild two dozen people will still manage to break something in a way they never anticipated anyway.

*based on a true story.

Good thing you don’t work for Anet then with how easily you get frustrated and flustered professionally.

My problem is the bad PR. Don’t say the 15th if the patch won’t hit the 15th in one of the two major regions your costumers play and pay from.

Who would have thought that a North American company would base their calendar on North American time zones.

I get that it’s already April 16th in some parts of the world. Unfortunately for you, Washington state is not one of them.

So Colin just confirmed that the ‘quarterly or so’ comment did not come from them:

“Just want to quickly clarify, we gave no timelines on additional feature packs or timing of any other releases. All we’ve said is the feature pack concept has been good for us so far, and we plan to do another feature pack someday.”

Can we wait for what exactly the patch notes say atleast?

You’re not serious are you?

If they had said changes ready, they would have been touting them ages ago. This is just another case of ANet dangling a nonexistent carrot.

Yet another reminder that the so-called “amazing changes” for Ranger announced in February are still M.I.A.

I think a lot of people do not know/are forgetting that unlocking an amulet etc. is account wide not per character.

What’s your point?

A gold sink is a gold sink, especially in a game-mode where everyone is supposed to be on an even playing field.

Their official stance is that this is a form of horizontal progression and does not give players any meaningful advantage over other players.

I disagree, but what do I know.

So, they promised new skills and traits and they are coming out, we also had the first few skills back in November (to test the waters). Given the huge rework of the trait system I wouldn’t expect them to add more traits before the Feature Patch.

Champions got a new reward chest, Bonus gold from champions, new crafting materials from a variety of activities (the Ascended materials) and finally Account Magic Find and the ability to salvage Fine and Masterwork gear for Luck.

So the only thing they promised is the Precursor crafting, and in earlier blog posts the Precursor scavenger hunt.

Is there anything else?

As for the PVP link, I guess you are talking about the Paid tournaments?

The only new skills we have gotten were one healing skill per profession, whereas new utilities, elites, and weapon sets (aka the real stuff) are still M.I.A.

Legendaries and precursors, although I honestly could not care less about this feature.

Don’t even get me started on WvW; there is a laundry list of updates that have been asked for since this game was in beta that still have not been implemented.

As for sPvP, we’re still missing functioning Leaderboards and a more robust Spectator mode, and we’re just now receiving reward updates.

Keep in mind that tournaments have since been shelved and that the whole eSports idea is laughable.

I get that development takes time and that things don’t appear out of nowhere, but I’d prefer no blog updates rather than a carrot on a stick that is over a year away.

Any new "looks" coming at all?

I’d like to see some full new sets acquireable in actual game, not gemstore.

I mean, over almost 2 years We’ve not gotten a single full set of new armor that wasn’t a gemstore thing.
I get it that ANet needs that money but come on, most of the players just get this armor by gold anyway and not releasing any new armor skin is a shame.

I agree.

I personally like to earn rewards through actual gameplay rather than swiping my credit card to obtain them, but that might just be me.

Can you link some of those blog posts that promised something that they didn’t actually do?

The Precursor scavenger hunt is the only one that comes to mind at the moment, and that’s hardly “content”, so anything else?

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/structured-pvp-iceberg/

Check those out.

The Looking Ahead one is from almost a year ago, while the sPvP Iceberg article is from October 2012. I’d also suggest taking a look at the WvW subforum.

Oh, you mean those: “We will release new content every two weeks” (which they did until they informed us otherwise)?

We must have different definitions of content; I personally don’t think that a laundry list of dry and tedious achievements tied to PvE zerg fests counts.

That being said, the Zephyr Sanctum update was awesome and I would love to see the Living Story go more in that direction rather than the Scarlet hoopla.

The one thing we can take out of this is that there will be at least two more feature patches this year if they keep along with the quarterly feature updates.

That would put the next updates at August and December.

I find that extremely unlikely.

OP didn’t link the article:

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/feature/8410/Guild-Wars-2-The-Improvements-Weve-Been-Waiting-For.html

“Every quarter or so, ANet will release a new feature pack bringing in tons of new quality of life improvements”

Honestly, I wouldn’t read too much into it.

There have been numerous blog posts over the years that contained the same promises to deliver content that have ultimately fallen through.

If they can manage to stay on schedule, that’s fantastic news; however, I wouldn’t hype it up because you’re only going to end up disappointed.

Why?

Take a look at ANet’s track record and get back to me.

I don’t feel like getting infracted for speaking the truth.

The Devs also stated in the Wardrobe thread(s) that new Outfits/skins will be released in the future.
