Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
So, my computer was knocked over last night while I was playing. And I can’t figure out what is wrong. Nothing crashed, and the game and my music kept chugging along. However, my framerate was cut in half and gets down to 11 FPS when i’m turning my camera around in the mists.
I’ve looked at all the hardware and nothing looks to be broken, I’ve checked to see if everything is registering in system properties, and I’ve made sure the graphics card is still secured. Is there anything I can do to find the problem?
Disclaimer: I’m not super knowledgeable on computers, but I did build this over a year ago.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Effective? Kinda. Dominant? No.
Any decently skilled person playing a good build can kill you, no matter how skilled you are. This build is best played with a group of people and not trying to solo much. Not saying you can’t solo things, but it’s fairly difficult.
Personally I prefer a 30/25/15/0/0 build with spotter and signets traited.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I agree with the OP, and so should you.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Don’t think so. Stupid, isn’t it?
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I spent a good long while trying to think of what Rangers are better at.
Dodging.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Would be the first ranger nerf I wouldn’t really care about. I find spirit builds boring and the unresponsive spirits are annoying. I already have an unresponsive pet, I don’t need 3 or 4 more.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Yaaaaay another spirit ranger, way to create build diversity ANET.
On another note: rabid and carrier both work, but if you’ve put 10 in marksmanship and have the bleed on crit trait, you’ll want the one with precision.
For sigils, have a corruption somewhere in there, otherwise I like hydromancy.
Runes: afflicted, undead, nightmare… Basically anything with condi damage/duration.
Lots of things work with it, just try it out and see which one you like the best.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Hi there!
Could we get Signet of Stone to give us Invulnerability instead of just “take no damage?”
It would be a fairly minor change and would give glass cannon builds some much needed survival from people applying conditions. Also, it would give us something to stomp with.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Sounds more like a bug fix.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Here’s a great Ranger burst;
Pop Might (with Cat Pet Skill or Rampage as One Elite Skill)
Pop Zephyr
Pop Skill 2 on Long BowThat’s all fine and dandy but sitting beside a kitty while it does it’s 3 second animation to get it’s mouth open and roar isn’t exactly practical on many situations.
Haha, that’s actually really depressingWonder who was the mastermind behind the pet design?
An idiot. My pet STILL bugs and doesn’t activate its skill all the time when I press the button.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
You can also get stability via signet of the wild if you spec for it.
Yeah, but generally if you spec for it, it’s a bad choice over the toughness sig.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Anybody else wish that condition damage gets nerfed like our direct damage, and pet stats get buffed? I’m tired of all of our good builds having condi damage.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Berserker builds do not have the access to the survivability necessary for high sustained damage. Especially when compared to the 0/30/30/10/0 Theif, where you can spec for huge crits from stealth, long stealth duration, great AoE damage on weapon swap, good condition removal, and probably more. NONSENSE I TELL YOU.
While this is true berserker is not about sustained damage, its about burst spikes. Its just that rangers have to work much harder for it (its basically “dat maul build”). And berserker thieves don’t have sustained damage either. Its short bursts, but they do have better tools to save their kitten , I agree with that.
Right, but devs such as Robert Hondura claim that rangers are supposed to be sustained damage.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
idk why we shouldnt be able to have a burst. “Because you are ranged” is a bs excuse when scepter ele’s have it and it really only buys us an extra 2 seconds to do mediocre damage.
As Robert Hrouda said ranger is about sustained damage and staying alive. That is how the ranger was designed. And then there are burst classes like mesmers, warriors, thieves, eles, condi engies, condi necros… I’m pretty sure there are burst guards as well, I just didn’t come across that many.
Which would be fine and dandy IF we had those tools to stay alive. We have a few right now, but not enough.
The ranger does have tools to stay alive, they just force the ranger into specific builds. Just like most damage dealing warrior builds take greatsword and most thief builds use stealth. Our main source of defense comes from evades, dodges, regen. And if you use all of them in one build, you’re near invincible.
Agreed! But only if you spec a certain way. (Bunkery and condi damage)

Its a panic button, only really meant to be used once when the kitten hits the fan. And survivability will always be reduced by going into the power and precision lines.
Well sure, but longbow power/crit ranger needs more survivability. Maybe I’m wrong, but I see them as a sustained damage set up. Not able to pull off the burst of other classes, but able to do pretty high damage constantly.
That being said, I don’t know if buffing lightning reflexes across the board would be great, because I can see bunker builds abusing it.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
For all of you suggesting quickness stakes. Know that there is a bug where even if you finish the animation, if quickness has already run out, you will not get the stomp unless you remain in the crouched position until they are registered dead.
Doesn’t that only happen when the quickness doesn’t cover the whole stomp?
Yes, so like the 30 BM trait will work only if you’ve activated it and immediately start the stomp.

A better way of saying it: animation will finish before stake registers.
Also, you can’t start stomping and then activate quickness….. I don’t know why.
Otherwise, learn all of the downed skills of other classes and learn what it looks like when the begin casting them, and dodge them. (Easiest is warrior)
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
You know…. I wrote 2 paragraphs talking about how berserker builds aren’t terrible. But then I got to the point where I was defending it in 1v1 scenarios and lost heart. Because it really does lack either survivability or burst. One or the other should be buffed.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Standard spirit builds start with 0/0/30/30/0 and then you can put 10 in any of the others based on your gear.
High precision/condi gear? 0/10/30/30/0 with bleed on crit
High power/condi gear? 10/0/30/30/0 that grants sharpening stones at foe %50 health.
Personally, I like to run shaman gear (spvp) with 0/0/30/30/10 with shorter CD on my wolf howls. (If I’m running a spirit build, which has been a week or two since I have.)
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I don’t like your piercing arrows or longer range traits. VERY unnecessary in spvp, take spotter in place of longer range. And unless you reaaaaaly like it, replace piercing with something else. Also, you HAVE to have condition removal in spvp, without 30 in WS that gives you healing spring or sig of renewal.
Scholar runes are ok, but I found with ranger, you’re rarely at over %90 health, so runes of the ranger is nice. But really scholar runes are probably fine.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I’m not a fan of spirits in WvW. I’d trade it out for lightning reflexes for more survivability or quickening zephyr for faster burst.
And trade for primal reflexes for more dodges, cause those bleeds aren’t doing much. Also, I noticed your condition removal is healing spring which is ok, but sig of renewal might be a good choice, it’s also a stun breaker. Also, it can allow you to use a different heal if you so desired.
I also prefer the toughness sig instead of the regen sig on power builds, because you need a lot of healing power for it to be useful.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
If you’re pvping, I’d say 800 is minimum, (and high toughness). Otherwise you’d probably be better off getting more toughness/offense.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
We’ve asked for this before, to no avail. I’d be fine with having a trait that did this.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Now if only our attacks also did damage! Haha…. but seriously.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
It could be, that they intended it to be a single target ranged damage dealer. But since there are soooooooooooooo many gap closers available to every class, it doesn’t work very well.
Also, there isn’t enough ranged burst to down a bunker, or kill another glass cannon before they down you.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I enjoy my berserker ranger in s/tpvp, much more fun than spirits or traps. Probably not as effective, but I guess that’s the price I’ll pay.
In large WvW, rangers are still meh.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
The most popular build (right now) is probably the spirit build. But I prefer my super glassy berserker ranger. It’s nice for team fights, but pretty meh in 1v1s.
Traps are probably still just as effective, but with how popular necros have become, people often run several forms of condition removal.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
It’s all relative. But for an all around “master class” it’s the Mesmer. They also have the group utility to really shine in WvW guild play. (Veil and Null Field) Also, you can pretty much go all glass and survive almost everything. But what really sticks out, is that you can keep your 1v1 build and still be super useful in group play. Something Rangers can’t do.
And rangers really lack the utility to be good in large guild play. They have a good water field that can be blasted for extra heals. And you can spec into shouts for perma regen and swiftness. But it’s not as good as previously mentioned Mesmer utilities.
That being said, I don’t like playing my mesmer very much. Usually play guardian/thief/ranger.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
My big problem is the limited pet range. If my pet is going to die by a light breeze at least let me send it out front so it might waste some special abilities of people.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Really, I think if you just put all the ranger traits and weapons in a bucket, and mix them all up, it would all work about as well as the builds we have now.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
From what I remember, Yishis doesn’t use pistol offhand, but instead uses double dagger. So he doesn’t use the black powder heart seeker for stealth.
Instead he uses Cloak and Dagger. By waiting for stealth to almost be out. (Once it starts blinking rapidly) He starts to cast CnD and when he appears from stealth he’s almost instantly back in stealth while blinding foes from his trait. In order to sustain stealth, he uses his heal and shadow refuge.
This method eats up a lot less initiative giving more damage output in the end. Yet is mor difficult to land than the dagger pistol method.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I do fine in spvp with my SB/Greatsword beast master build. BM builds got hit a little too hard, but they’re still viable. Only thing you can’t take down is a Mesmer, but that’s not really a surprise, now is it.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Would it be overpowered though? Like somebody already said, you can get out of basi venom with a stun break.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Lol, “fixed”…. because we have pets
I do just fine 1v1, it’s the group utility I have trouble with. Also AoE
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Sure, but it’s a pretty long cool down for something that requires your pet to be alive AND fairly close to you.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Depends on how you want to use it.
IMO:
Pve: boring (but I find pve boring in general)
WvW: boring, but you can now give perma swiftness and regen to the Zerg/group
sPvp: Fun IF you like bunkery builds. Also, take the naysayers with a grain of salt. Many will claim that the shortbow is useless or BM builds are dead. But I’d urge you to see for yourself. (That last bit applies for all three sections.)
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
It should all be balanced now, right? I mean, they did release the biggest balance patch yet….right? Right? RIGHT?
????????
Well i am very happy with this patch, but it seems like am I am also the only one xD
Oh, that wasn’t supposed to be a negative comment. I too am relatively happy with it. However, I do think that mesmers and engis are still pretty powerful compared to other classes.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
All I really want on my ranger is stability or 4 seconds of stealth (that I choose when to activate, none of that traited stun break crap tyvm)
Why can’t we get easy access to a stomp mechanic like every other class out there. (Besides maybe necro?)
Otherwise I think they ok.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian

????????????????????????
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Probably because of the speed that we would apply conditions if it was a hit them from anywhere skill. However, I don’t feel like it would be that much more than P/D thieves.
BUT, it would be a constant application of bleeds, compared to the kinda bursty application of of thief bleeds via the stealth attack.
All in all, I do feel like the Ranger SB is lacking in bleeds.
PROPOSITION:
Make the Ranger SB #1 skill a progression with 2 attacks and the only thing different about the second attack, is that it applies bleeds from any position, while taking bleeds off the first attack.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
What do you think you are? A ranger?
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I’ve never found an effective use for the 1200 bomb range. Most of the time I’m using the shortbow for blast finishers to stack might/swiftness/healing.. Or using the auto attack and maybe a poison field in Zerg fights when my health is low.
I almost never use it while roaming.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Hmm, I would try to lessen the amount of health you have and increase the toughness. With the high amount of healing in the build, it will be pretty easy to refill your health, and be less susceptible to direct damage burst.
But that might just be a personal preference? If you’re facing only one opponent, then you can dodge most/all of their burst. But it’s difficult to do so when facing 2 opponents, ESPCIALLY if they are communicating via VoIP.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I’m happy with my new build so far, I haven’t tried it in tpvp yet (which IMO is a great way to test the effectiveness and group utility of your class.) But so far, it has done well in hot joins.
I STILL wish pet ability activation was automatic and I didn’t have to pray for it to go off. That fix would open up more reliable utility when using Guard.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Something that gives stability. Perhaps a griffon, OR a mini dragon!!!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Well… I can stack up a minute and half (the time cap) of AoE regen now. So that’s gotta be something, right?
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
What Stormleaf said.
However, I do feel like the stealth that guard gives is completely pointless. It’s not like it gives pets a special from stealth attack. And who cares about hiding a pet? They can’t do enough damage to worry about anymore anyways.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
A shout support build looks interesting, will probably try it out, at least in spvp.
