Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
As someone who has a thief alt, but mainly plays Guardian in WvW. I have little to no problem with thieves current abilities.
Yes, they can do the things you mentioned, but if you took that away they would be of little use in WvW. They’re “ok” in Zerg play. But I’d rather have some well necros or mesmers, or eles.
If you want to talk about broken WvW classes, take a gander at those Rangers. And by broken, I mean next to useless.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Well, do I have news for you! If a ranger has activated their signet to get stability they can’t stomp, or Rez, or do anything but attack! Maybe somebody agrees with you somewhere!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I lik this build, and find it much more fun than condi builds.
I prefer putting 10 more in Survival from Marksmanship. I feel like the toughness is better than the crit damage. But I’m sure they play similarly.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I think it triggers it, but I don’t know. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Nah, but I do play a ranger.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Why not, rewards are comparatively terrible in WvW anyways, why not increase them for those who can’t tag much at the moment. However, I’d rather have more exciting updates to WvW than this, and tagging minimum damage is already pretty low. So maybe put this on a low priority.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
WXP is still a fairly new addition if I’m not mistaken. Most likely it’s on their to-do list.
I’m 98% sure they’ve said that this is how they like it and they aren’t changing it. kitten the players.
Or maybe I’m just confusing that with other reasonable player ideas.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
i dont understand why the attack…I said that this is an ideal situation,im just showing the possibilities…All the QQers waved a war against me…
Also every skill in this game, every single kitten one can be dodged, dont act like only Rangers Rapid Fire cant be dodged,or Drakes aoe…Start not using autopilot on pets and you will be able to land the aoe more often
I’m not waging a war or trying to insult you. But you didn’t post a video against an actual player, so I ran through a likely scenario. As for dodging, my point was that it drastically reduces rapid fires damage. As for your auto pilot pet comment…. just… no. We have no control over when they do their special attacks unless you have thm on passive. The FIRST attack of a pet will be the special crap, like lung on dogs or tail whip on drakes. This means your pet will just be sitting ther and you’re missing out on possible damage. Also, tail whip takes so long to activate and it’s a stationary move, that most players will be no where near the drake by the time it finishes.
Sorry you took offense to the comment. It was not meant to be inflammatory. But it’s post that say everything is fine with the ranger, that rustles my jimmies.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Well, there’s a reason spirits are the meta build for rangers. They are probably the most effeicent way to stack conditions (in a condi meta.) But I too hate using them. It’s annoying when they die/expire. And the lack of stun breaks is annoying.
So I have used a 30/20/20/0/0 to moderate success, with berserker gear and traited signets. It lacks survivability and it’s near impossible to win a 1v1, but you bring nice damage to team fights with longbow barrage and Greatsword cleave. Bring healing spring and maybe sig of renewal for team utility.
30/10/30/0/0 is something I’ve tried recently. Soldiers gear, with spotter, 5% precision sigil, and runes of the ranger can get you up to 38% ish crit chance, 3k attack, and 3k armor. You’ll also have 22k health to work with. It’s not very bursty, but it has decent damage and good survivability. Also, with emphatic bond and healing spring, condi removal is pretty good. You can take sig of renewal if you need more. Longbow and off hand axe makes area denial pretty good, and the barrage crits hit pretty hard. Longbow/Greatsword might give more survivability though.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Yyyyyeah, drake will never hit a player with that skill, unless they are rooted (something this build can’t do.
So it’s more like 10k in 6 seconds, BUT an actual player wouldn’t sit there and take it. They would dodge, so that takes away about three hits. So now you’re down to 7k damage, but they can dodge again, so lets take it down to 4k damage. But wait there’s more! Most classes have a way to block damage you picked heavy golem so I’ll pick guardians and warriors. Assuming they have dodged once their skills will block the entirety of the rest of Rapid Fire, bringing your damage output down to a whopping 0k DMG.
BUT WAIT!!! You say, those dodges and blocks will not be up in the 8 seconds for my rapid fire to be off cool down. But by the time those 8 seconds are up they have closed the gap, and since you have to survivability they have stunned you (since your stability signet has been used (maybe you get RaO off, but it’s probably on CD) and killed you, or made you use sig of stone.
So now you might have survived with half your HP, so you do your rotation again, but your signets are off CD so you’ll be doing at least 25% less damage, and they’ve recovered at least 1 dodge roll, possibly 2. You use #4 to push me back (check for stability) and do about 4k with rapid fire. They’re now at 75% health and you’re at 50% without any damaging skills to work with. I could go on, but I hope you get the point.
Oh, and condi builds just have to look at you real hard, and then bye bye.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Warrior is in more demand for group play. And as you know there’s the whole problem with ranger pets just being in existence so that gets super annoying when you play it.
Never played engi much.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I like the LOS idea, but it would be easier to just tone down the damage. To anybody throwing out the “realistic” argument, (an argument i hate for videogames where people try to escape real life for a bit) should arrow carts be allowed to fire into a lords room? No, there is a ceiling there. Last night we were holding EK from a much larger force, and while some of them tried to push into the lords room, most stayed back and built arrowcarts.
My POINT: They could have wiped us by pushing into us, but it has become such the norm to build carts, that that’s what they did.
It doesn’t make sense that they can fire into a completely covered dome, and through that narrow choke. Only thing that should make it through are ballistas.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
No. FIFTEEN CHARACTERS!!!!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I like a 30/20/20/0/0 or 30/25/15/0/0 zerker GS/LB with signets of hunt, stone, and either of the other two.
A 30/x/30/x/x build sounds like a good idea also, IF you can get enough precision. Which I can’t really do in spvp. Not sure how much you can get, but the crit damage can’t be that high.
You mean something like this? (this is my 30/10/30 setup, though I also play with 20/20/30)
Yeah, that looks good to me!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Well, the only thing that could hit at 2500 is barrage. Everything else travels too slowly.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Wow…. That took long enough…
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
If you dot like the idea of a pet mechanic, playing ranger won’t change your mind. It’s slow, unresponsive and does kitten damage because it can’t hit jack diddly.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
No not really. In order to be doing enough damage with power/crit you’ll usually have to go deep into the power tree anyways. (Definitely for spvp) So location doesn’t matter much. But I guess it would free up a slot for mid tier power traits.
In the end, doesn’t matter either way (to me.)
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian

I see order in the pictures you posted. But I know that in game, my drake hound is not next to my other wolves… And I feel like some other pets are out of order. Maybe it’s a recently used kind of thing.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Just wanted to hop in and say it is intentional. It is considered a transformation, and in transformations, you can not interact with anything. I don’t agree with it, but it isn’t a bug.
Yeah, it seems silly. If an ele’s mist form isn’t counted as a transformation, why should our sudden growth spurt be as such. Can warriors not stomp in Rampage, or whatever it’s called?
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Woah, 10 months ago?!?!?!?! That’s insane. Hopefully this just fell through the cracks or something. But that is ridiculous!
I think I’ll just keep bumping this thread until it gets fixed. Don’t know how effective that is… but it’s pretty much the only power we’ve got.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Question: When you trait Signet of the Wild to give both you and your pet stability and increased damage, you can not stomp somebody. Is this intentional, or a bug?
Note: If intentional…. that’s terrible.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I don’t know if these are known (by the Devs) or not… but!
There are 2 bugs with the display time on Search and Rescue and the actual time.
1. Before you select it, it says the CD is 85 seconds. A reasonable time. Then once you equip it, it goes up to 180 seconds. Which, quite frankly is terrible, given that players can interrupt your pet reviving somebody, or flat out kill the thing before it revives a player. I don’t see this happening on similar skills (like engi’s elixir.)
2. It is not affected by the trait that reduces shout CD times. It stays at 180 seconds, even traited.
Now, I know that shouts aren’t popular, and they definitely aren’t the meta at the moment. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get fixed.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
If you’re getting up to 20 bleeds by yourself. I don’t know what’s going wrong. How much are they ticking for? Also, with necros being so popular, everybody has as much condi removal as they can muster.
Maybe try shamans gear (spvp) for a tankier setup. Just for a bit. I find it helps me learn a class if I play with tanky stats first, then move to more glassy stats.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Nothing. Unless you want dyes. Then do that. Odd how they didn’t see this problem coming…..
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I hear ya brother!!!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
You’ve heard correctly.
Small scale, any of our condition regen builds work. So: traps, spirits, or beastmaster.
Large scale, your best bet is likely to go traps. Or survival skills with muddy terrain and binding roots. Then probably main hand axe, or great sword for the AoE and cleave.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
The only problem I see with your statement. Is that it implies that rangers were ever effective in WvW.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Stack them. 300k here, still waiting for the miracle.
This. Salvage extras from tournies for dye materials. Otherwise glory is useless.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I would like them to balance our current weapon choices (buff direct damage,) before they throw in another option.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Take away the range damage restrictions on auto attack. Or make the auto attack faster. Basically…. fix the auto attack.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I don’t think the map is as bad as people make it out to be. But mainly I don’t like when people quit, so yeah it bothers me.
(I understand its a fairly effective way to protest, but it puts the people that don’t quit out in the cold.)
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Are you pvping or pveing with this. If its pvp, you’re going to want more condi removal, which means taking the signet of renewal. sigh which means your pet will take massive amounts of damage if you get condi bursted. But if you switch to the other pet it should be ok. I’d switch out sig of the wild for it, so you keep your movement and pet damage utilities.
Also, for spvp you’ll want wolves, drakes are “fine” for WvW.
From the looks of it you’ll want berserker or knights gear (something with a lot of precision.) this will mold nicely with your marksmanship traits. And since you don’t have the 50% endurance regen of most rangers, you’ll want to kill people quickly.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
We believe in WvW both as a game type and as a source of revenue. Perceived lack of resources devoted to WvW should be balanced against reasonable expectations of what can be achieved by any resources. It takes a lot less time to build new ability lines than it does to, say, build a new home map. We are working on some things that won’t see the light of day for a long time and we are also working on things that you will see very soon. Believe me, WvW is important to us as a company and we will continue to improve on it.
Well it’s good to know that the new map will be better than zephryite sanctum, southsun cove and the crown pavilion combined. Since, ya know…. It’s taking so much longer than the three of those. Therefore the quality should be superb!
I for one am excited that they are taking such good care of us WvWers!
Can we assume new WvW weapons and armor like southsun weapons and pineapple helmets? Score!!!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I’m unhappy with that answer.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
As someone who loves to spvp with my ranger, I find it waaaaay too frustrating to WvW with my ranger.
Unless you’re running bears or you’re 30 into BM, your pet will still insta die to 15+ man Zerg. Queue zergs just have to look at the pet to kill it.
Otherwise I don’t think rangers are that bad, but pets are a big source of damage, so it sucks that it dies fast and gets CC’d up the wazoo.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Linguistically Inept & Fomby, the Ranger already has a lot of cripples and slow’s so I would be hesitant to add more, especially as the GS already has a stun.
I couldn’t undersand why they removed the bleeds though, especially as it would work well with Shapening Stone whereas the vulnerability can’t work with Remorseless properly.Prysin not everything I suggested involved changing things back and those where I did I stated the reason why, it is generally because the changes Anet made moved the Ranger away from how he was designed to played both in terms of it’s own traits and skills and the way it works with other classes.
It’s true, the ranger has a buttload of CC, mostly soft. But as a class that has your pet doing 40%-70% of your damage, and with bad pathing and not being able to move while attacking. I feel like we need all the cc’s possible.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I strongly feel barrage should have instant-kill instead of cripple. This would really put rangers in a new position. Currently barrrage is a bit underwhelming, and the damage it deals is not insane to begin with (and I’m a full zerker ranger saying this). Changing the cripple to instant-kill would really give rangers a huge buff in WvW viability, as well as making barrage and the longbow a weapon a lot more rangers would really want to use. Thoughts?
I second this, I feel like this is a step in the right direction.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I kinda hope that you have to have played a decent amount of tournies to get a legendary. Because hot join grinding isn’t very legendary.
Make it so it requires x amount of paid/unpaid tourney tokens. Or something like that.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
+1 solely because I don’t think they are capable of fixing the issues. I’d love to have a pet that works, but I don’t and it’s a big deal.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I think swoop should have a CC of some sort. A knockdown would be great and make the most sense, but immobilize, chill, or cripple would be fine.
I like your signet idea.
I don’t care much about the blast finisher on maul, it’s a nice thought though. And I don’t understand the thought process on giving vulnerability on the hardest hitting attack, doesn’t it deal damage and then apply the condition?
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I use the GS in my power crit build. It’s the only way I can seem to put burst on a target. Well…. “Burst.” Also the evade and block it gives is nice for my squishy self.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
After reattaching the heatsink it is working a lot better. FPS doesn’t drop lower than 50, but I haven’t done a WvW guild run so there’s that…
However, the temperature is still higher than what I want. It’s been a while since I built this, should you reapply the coolant gel every so often? Do you think that it would make much of a difference?
Core speed didn’t really get up to 3300MHz, it stayed around 2600. Is that just because the game didn’t need all the power, or was the CPU throttling down because of the temp still?
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
So I downloaded Core Temp to see if my CPU was overheating, and just a few seconds in gw2 had it up to 98C with a 100% load. Which I’m pretty sure is way too high?
I researched and found that 80C is pretty much the max for the 2500k (I have a plain 2500, but that just means it can’t be overclocked, right)
This seems to point towards my CPU not getting enough cooling, right? But when I looked inside the case while it’s running, the heatsink is still spinning. Does it matter that much whether or not it’s secured well? (I’m going to reattach it anyways.)
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
(edited by Fomby.4295)
Either immobilize for half of the duration of barrage, or chill for the same duration as cripple. Or a shorter cool down. It’s just too easy to evade barrage.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Hello again! Thanks for the replies. I downloaded CPU-Z and hope ya’ll can help with the information collected.
What I did find odd, was that my processor (i5 2500 3.30GHz) fluctuates a lot when I ran GW2. (Or at least I thought it was a lot.)
Upon opening gw2 it ran at ~3300 MHz, I let it sit in the character screen and it dropped to ~2200MHz. After entering the game I was in the Mists where it ran fairly smoothly but dropped down the ~1800MHz. Then I went into WvW. Visual lag was terrible apparent when activating pretty skills (symbols for guardians.) and the speed would drop to ~800MHz. I was also running around loading the environment if that matters.
Bus Speed is 99.7X MHz. Which I think is good?
Also, Ricky brought up the power issue, so I don’t know if it’s helpful, but the Core Voltage is at .912 V.
Would EVGA work with Radeon cards? I have a Radeon HD 6850.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Just dodge the pet…
Either
A. They’ve gone into beastmasterery and the pet is all of their damage.
B. The pet hits like a wet noodle.
C. Walk more than 2000 range away and the pet will stop attacking because of the stupid leash range.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Well, spirit rangers are fotm, so you can’t say you aren’t fotm if you’re playing it, but I agree that they arent OP.
Another thing I agree with, is that they are one of the very few viable ranger builds out there.
