Well… kinda. The power/prec/tough/vit works. But the healing power and condi damage does not.
Also, I’ve had it where once I switch pets, they lose the buff and it doesn’t get re applied.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Does the new buff affect our pets? Something tells me it doesn’t, but I did not look the last time I was on.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I feel like a thief can do most of what a ranger can do in a gvg. And do it better. If they need to put out AoE damage, shortbow auto can crit really high on three targets and still retain good toughness for survivability. And if they need to focus a particularly nasty back liner down, switch to dagger and its a quick focused DPS burst until they’re dead.
Also, pets would be nice if the useful ones didn’t die before they got their skills off.
Basically, I think rangers can be effective in gvg, but I think other classes do it better.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
AS a roamer, i gotta say this kitten sucks. Currently fighting Kain and they have all 3 bloodlust buffs. sure roaming is fun, and i can usually pull off some pretty spectacular outnumbered maneuvers, but what am i supposed to do against a group of players with +150 to all stats? Run. That’s all i can manage now. it’s pretty lame.
Spot on.
I like that they added new terrain. The buffs are stupid. If this was his idea, I would like ANET to fire Devon Carver. You could have implemented ANYTHING other than stat boosting, but you apparently don’t have the imagination for it.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
You make it sound like they care if people stop playing WvW. Preeeeetty sure they don’t.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Just don’t expect to bring anything to group play that others can’t do better.
As long as you can come to terms with this reality, enjoy.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Account bound. Why is it a bad idea?
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Not the I don’t like your ideas, but here’s what I would like to see.
Staff 1:
AoE come attack, much like guardian staff 1. However, it will do less damage, but it will apply 1sec of cripple to 5 players.
Staff: 2
Some sort of mobility skill, either a leap or teleport. 900 range.
Staff 3:
Create a water field that heals allies not with regen tho, just a flat heal. Perhaps use the same animation as the theif healing tree that they steal from rangers.
Staff 4:
Create Muddy Terrain at your feet, will also clear 1 condition every second for you and allies. (Maybe take out immobilize from the muddy terrain.)
Staff 5:
Create a ground casted ring of thorns, same concept as guardian ring of warding. Foes can’t pass unless they have stability.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Any idea on what’s going on here? Also, I like the green particle effect idea. Even though I enjoy the enlargement, if it means I can’t stake/Rez/interact with things using F, I’d rather not have it.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Did they say how long it revealed was going to last? If it is just the normal 3s or whatever, then the skill will still be crap.
If its more like the WvW stealth trap (maybe not as extreme) then it might be useful. I think trap lasts 30s, but it is an AoE while I doubt sic em will be.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Longbow #1 skill needs to either:
A. Take away or decrease the severity of Damage drop off in association with range.
B. Have the longbow attack be faster. At the current rate of fire, you MIGHT get 1 full powered shot at 1000+ range. But if your opponent has any gap closing skills off cool down, you probably won’t even get that. So to punish them having their gap closer on cool down, allow us to land 2 or 3 hits at long range.
C. Increase longbow damage overall.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Gotcha covered. 30/10/30/0/0 with traited signets. I prefer using Greatsword and Longbow. But I do not see any reason you couldn’t use shortbow/sword.
Using berserker gear and sig of stone you can still have around 2400 armor. While still hitting pretty hard.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
As someone who enjoyed being a healer/tank. Yeah I do kinda miss it. And I don’t understand the hate OP is getting.
But this game does have its own form of holy trinity. It’s just more subtle than others. But I do feel like all the classes are very similar in what they can do, if not their gameplay. It’s just that some classes can do some stuff a lot better than others.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Anybody else notice: That the jaguar stealth ability is a puff of leaves and then stealth (very nature esque) and the longbow 3 is a whif of smoke (ala thief.)
Always wondered why we didn’t get the jaguar animation.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
They are not high enough currently, agreed and we will be making changes to the rank-up chests to make them significantly more rewarding.
That’s good, because I should feel happy when I rank up, and right now it’s just a “meh, look at this pop up on my screen that I need to get rid of.” And since it takes a bit to level up (relatively since school has turned me into a casual, but hey that’s what WvW is meant for, right) I feel like the rewards should be substantial. Throw some dragon it’s ore in there, or exotics, or a gold or two.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Sounds nice. Should give mesmers even more viability in WvW. With AoE stability and condi cleanse.
Like that ranger pets should be getting a buff in WvW/pve. Hopefully it’s enough to be felt.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I think it’s pretty obvious that ANET thinks ranger pets are fine as they are in WvW zergs.
I don’t agree, but that’s irrelevant since they don’t like player ideas either. It’s annoying that other class mechanics aid them in Zerg v Zerg play. Such as guardians being able to stroll through a Zerg relatively unharmed with aegis and heals, traited to regen and protection. Or Mesmer f4 giving invulnerability. Or necro life pool. Or engi massive diversity of toolbelt selection. Or warrior burst skill (which is usually hammer AoE).
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Nothing that can hit anything.
On a more serious note, get canine animals in order to hit moving targets. (Players)
But you can get: canine, fish, moas, pigs, birds, jellyfish, bears, spiders, devourers, and drakes.
There’s bound to be a list on the wiki.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Any devs read these subforums? I’m missing Robert Hourda right about now.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Zerker Ranger if you hate condition damage or for easy tags on pve bosses. Otherwise condi is better in every way.
Personally I hate conditions and use a zerker ranger, but I KNOW I’m sacrificing damage and survivability in favor of a more fun play type.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Zerker longbow ranger all day erreday. Or some of the day, whatever days you long on.
My only regret, is that I can’t go 5 signet.
Disclaimer: I have many other regrets, crappy pet pathing, health, and general mechanics being near the top of the list.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Well, it stops uplevels from soloing it. Well, until they reach level 50 or something.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Why don’t the bows and axe have cool animations? I could go for a nice animation on close range shot, like a giant elephant that knocks people back. Or something for barrage.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I think you get the general idea, so I’ll elaborate on people WvW comments on depending on the build.
Zerg: Traps. And this is fairly meh because they apparently have a 3 person hit cap instead of the normal 5. Also, it’s largely condition damage which in my experience is pretty meh in WvW since conditions get cleared soooo quickly even in unorganized play.
Roaming: I guess any build could work here, but it’s a pain to switch over from traps. And traps is probably the easiest to solo camps with.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I appreciate the numbers, and I will agree that the Mesmer heal is probably the worst of the three, however I don’t really play Mesmer so I don’t know.
However, you made the point that the thief heal is only so good because they have a lower base health, true. But on a sword/dagger build where most people use Withdraw, their health is sitting around 17.5-18k, due to traits. If you compare that to a glass cannon ranger (similar damage) Rangers are sitting at around 18k health. (These are spvp numbers you can probably get higher elsewhere)
There’s probably not that much a difference and if ANET ever looked at it they’d probably throw out some excuse like “It also heals your pet, so there’s that.”
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I feel like it should be on a 15s recharge, just like the Thief and Mesmer heal. Also, have it remove a conditions. OP you say? No.
Thief heal: Evade and remove crippled/chilled/immobilize
Mesmer heal: 2 second reflect.
Those seem way more powerful.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Don’t mind me, just trying to get an answer.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
To OP: you do know that Signet of Undeath (necro’s signet that revives downed players) doenst work in either PvP and WvW right? And that’s simply because auto rezzing is way to powerful.
You can complain that your skill kittens, but if they actually improve it you can bet its gonna be disabled for PvP and WvW. I would prefer if our skill was way worst but actually could be used in every game mode…
Sorry, it was the first two that came to my mind. But if you want, I can point out that Mesmer illusion of life and Guardian signet of mercy alsoboth work better than search and rescue. And while engis elixer isn’t an instant Rez, it actually works and affects multiple people.
Disclaimer: I wish they would fix other things first, because shouts are kinda terrible anyways. But might as well point this out so they can work on SOMETHIG.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Long cool down in pvp (180 even when traited.) And its not even an instant revive like warriors banner or necros signet.
VERY interruptable. And while you can interrupt warriors/necros theirs doesn’t go on the huge cool down because its already been activated. Also if your pet does while rezzing it’s a waste.
Also, only affects 1 player, terrible.
Idea: if you’re going to KEEP this ridiculous cool down.
A. Make the Rez instant
B. make it Rez 3-5 players
C. Make it kill the pet if the Rez was successful on a player.
If you are going to reduce the cool down.
A. Make the pet growl, snarl, roar, or squeal when it’s reached the downed players. Setting up a Rez field kinda like the engis elixir, that can’t be interrupted.
B. have it Rez a max of 3 players
C. People get a Rez debuff like illusion of life.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Sounds about right, but instead of replacing F1, give us an F5 skill that does what you suggest we replace F1 with.
Also, I think guard shouldn’t have a cast time, and have a farther range. But that seems unlikely because it sounds like a buff, and those don’t happen here.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
So, the search function wasn’t working, if this has been presented and shot down, oh well.
Would it be feasible, to take away the ability to swap pets in combat, and make them unable to die? Yet still susceptible to CC.
You’re losing a lot if utility to gain this ability. For instance if you’re running wolf/drake and choose the drake, you’re losing a knockdown, a cripple, an immobilize (or chill/fear/regen.) I feel like it would be a fairly balanced trade off.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
For WvW condi prec tough build, you’ll probably want traps, so 30 into marksmanship is pretty much required for shorter trap CD, and the ability to chuck them at 900 range.
Personally I don’t play traps because I don’t like condi builds. If the group you are facing is good, they can clear those conditions in a second or two. Also, they apparently only hit three people, which would probably bother me.
I’m a fan of the 30/10/30/0/0 build with traited signets (mainly for the stability, but the increased damage and take no damage is also nice) with a mix of knights(or berserkers) and soldier gear. In theory, this build should be a pretty hard hitter, and depending on your weapon choices, it has the ability to give group utility.
Axe offhand: projectile reflect
Warhorn: blast finisher
But longbow/Greatsword are the weapons I use because I like the feel of them. Sword/axe is probably pretty useful though.
Also, don forget to run spiders/drakes/bears. Anything else will melt to a half decent guild group, especially with the necro stacking going on currently. You can probably run moas or something else that gives boons if you opt for a backline build, but the build I use is pretty much frontline/midline.
Oh, and if you’re running with a organized group, you’ll want to try and run with healing spring for a blastable water field.

At least as an ele, you’ll be in high demand for WvW. Staff ele’s are great.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I usually feel like Spotter is better than Piercing Arrows, am I wrong? Usually I’m running a fairly tanky build with around 35% crit chance. Spotter gives like a 8% boost not just to me, but my team as well.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Soooo, this wasn’t fixed. Time to keep bumping it till the next patch! Or until a Dev tells me it’s working as intended! ….which would be very lame!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Once you call your pet back to you, or set it on passive, it should become invulnerable.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Well, hopefully if your aredefending a tower/keep for hours, you have killed a ton of players, giving you a lot of bags. Now, will that be enough to cover the difference? I dunno. Also, if you are one of the people that either doesn’t tag a lot, or is doing something unrewarding (monetarily) like running supply…. yyyyyeah…
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
No. Also, to the people putting in “yes” and then adding stuff like I wish etc. or They could do better… You aren’t satisfied.
I am overly satisfied with PvE tho, and I don’t even do fractals or dungeons so they aren’t doing everything wrong!
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
There are quite a few t3 humans running about. Don’t know much about the norn though.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
I only have a problem with the 60s recharge on death. It makes pets useless in WvW and PvE where AoE will destroy it in half a second.
Spvp is mostly ok unless you’re going up against AoE heavy classes.
I don’t know what a good recharge would be.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
How do you know they didn’t have increased magic, gold, and experience? And they definitely didn’t have to pay for repairs.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Healing Spring gives great team utility, longest water field in game and blastable for more healing. Oh, and condi removal.
A needs of the many outweigh the needs on a few or one kinda thing.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
While I was going to bump this after the patch, (in case they didnt fix it) I kinda forgot about it for a bit. So instead of risking forgetting about it after the patch, bump.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
inb4 the “Ranger pets are fine, l2p crowd”
I don’t think those people exist in PvE and WvW.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Might as well tack this on to the hopes and dreams of having a useful WvW build. Aka. Never going to happen.
But nice post though.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
It’s odd, because even if you use swoop to close the gap on runners, hilt bash has difficulty hitting:
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Welp, there goes the only Dev that posts on the Ranger forum.
Kal Snow – Norn Guardian
Anybody else still ticked that pets don’t have stats like healing power, or condition damage? I might even use my sylvan hound if it had healing power. I mean, it has a section for it on the pet selection screen, it’s just all set to 0.
