Nice videos. I wouldn’t have the skill to go to a crit/trap build from my healing build though. I would get 3 shot by Thiefs. Kudos to you for pulling it off.

Seeing as how this class has issues, and this thread is so full of unhelpful banter about broken bows and under-powered underpants. I thought we should have a thread where we just gave out tips on how we are overcoming our shortcomings, something for the new Rangers in town, it’s not all that bad.

If you can’t get a fractals group, but boy do you want that vial for your Quiver. Just set it to level one and jump on in. You can solo those initial elite harpies, you can solo those greedy grawl. The vial drops off of any mob loot dropping mob in the dungeon it’s all down to luck.

That’s actually all I can think of off the top of my head, what tips do you have for new Rangers?

No Laurel and no chest

Completed a daily a few days ago and got my Laurel. The next day I finished half of the daily. The next day it showed what I had remaining to finish it….which I did. I didn’t get a Laurel. The new daily popped up the next day and the same thing happened.

So my question is, if you don’t complete the daily in 1 day, you don’t get the Laurel ?

…if that is true, why doesn’t the daily reset ?

Xsorus is a good Ranger no doubt, and don’t think I’m trying to take anything away from his accomplishments.

He did highlight a potential benefit for the Ranger, above the ohter classes. Being able to dodge around, to not trigger Confusion ticks on yourself, and avoid retaliation, while your pet continues to do damage puts us above what other classes suffer against Pain Inverter, and Mesmers.

However, on my server people have begun killing our pets first, so I wonder what would have happened had that Ranger killed Xsorus’s pet first, what the outcome would have been.

The first time I had a Mesmer virtually instantly kill my pet, my mouth hit the floor. As a condition/BM spec, she cut my damage by more than half in a short period of time. Switching pets only bought me two seconds, before it was dead and I was staring at cooldowns.

Since then, it seems to be the normal occurence when roaming solo on my server.

Had the same thing happen yesterday more than once, and make “short period” “instant” very disheartening indeed, I’ve gone from loving pets in every game that has a ranger/hunter with pet to absolutely hating them in gw2 I want to delete them forever cause I feel so gimped by them I cannot express, they are slow at everything they do and die from sneezes.

I was just thinking that. Fought a Thief a couple of times. Close fights that I won. My Panther ripped him up pretty good. 3rd fight he took the Panther out almost instantly. He won that fight.

Opponent usually gets a confusion or some type of bleed.

Yes, you look and sound like a girl using it but it’s nice that it is up every 12 seconds. Even when travelling I pop it. 12 seconds of Swiftness never hurts.

wrong. go through all of my points about other profs, and i want you to concisely counter how ranger is as good or better than what i listed. for example: ranger damage from 1200, burst, survivability, team support, CC…how is it as good or better than the other profs/sepcs i listed?

i also listed for you the only ranger strengths (ive been playing ranger since BWE1 and will continue to do so). these strengths are overridden by other profs who can do the same, except better.

im probably the biggest ranger fanboy here, which is why im advocating for the profession. but being a blind fanboy is probably the worst thing for the game, and this silly prof.

I find it sorta funny to read posts like. “The Ranger class is fine L2P” but no reasons are given as to why it is fine. Where those saying the opposite usually give many reasons why they believe this.

I find it sorta funny how much people whine about a computer game. People come on these forums all pumped about their Rangers and gasp say they are having fun ..what a concept.
Then the whiners speak up and say wtf you talking about ? Rangers are gimped. You people that say you are having fun playing the class are doing a disservice to Rangers and preventing them from getting fixed.

If some of you are that miserable playing a Ranger, why keep playing it ? Change to another class, quit the game or just keep playing your Ranger. Suggestions are good but the whinning is tiresome. For all those classes, their DPS can be very good….after an amount of time occurs. That is fine in PvE. In PvP burst damage is > over time damage.

If you can eat or avoid burst damage, then DoT wins. If you can’t, burst wins. It’s an oversimplification, but DoT player needs to slow the fight down to win while a burst player needs to speed it up to win.

Browse the forums a bit. the #1 complaint in the game is Thief. Both stealth and dying to them after a 4 second chain.

I’m on here everyday, and I’m nothing if not completely familiar with people complaining about thieves. Just because the complaints exist does not mean that they are legitimate. Once you learn how to deal with thieves, they are little more than an annoyance…unless they are genuinely good players. But then again, good players playing rangers are also hard to beat. Good players are good. Surprise.

This thread isn’t about how to deal with certain classes…or how some players deal with burst damage better than other. The point is, the biggest complaint from every pvp game I have played like this is burst damage. The first year the Devs are always trying to find the right balance and are constantly tuning the burst down…and usually the Dots up.

….legitimate complaints ? Noone likes to die in less than 4 seconds. Even if they are bad players. Maybe Anet should come out with a statement …sorry dude, you are a bad player. Stop whinning and get better…. Safe to say you won’t get as many complaints from those ‘bad’ players when they lose to a Ranger after a 30+ second fight.

I am thinking of building a rifle/GS Warrior. Need to do some research first to decide what race.

I will take a closer look but at initial glance I’m not sure of your intentions with this build. Damage ….pet damage ….bunker survival….?

So I was bored since my computer is in the repair shop, again, and I was skimming through all the class forums and it seems that out all of them Ranger have the most threads about players complaining about their class. Sure there are 1 or 2 threads in each forum complaining about their class, but Rangers exceed that by having almost the entire front page of complaining threads.

There’s either on of two problems here:
1. The ranger community has a whole doesn’t know how to play and complain too much.

2. ANet poorly designed this class since every other class seems to be content with how their class is running.

Now what I think it is, a little bit of 1, mostly people complaining about pets being broken (except Fractals I agree they are broken there) and how they don’t compare to warriors or thieves in damage (no kitten Sherlock). However, I think it is more of 2 because there is a general consensus on this forum that isn’t seen on any other forum that the class needs some major work. Mind you that the same player population that is playing ranger could also be the same population playing the other professions as alts and there is no complaining there.

So I invite everyone who usually defends the class and argues that there is no problem at all L2P to browse through the other forums and see how a functioning class’ forum looks like, and then share your thoughts with me.

Note: I love playing this class, been playing it since BWE1 and I think I have a fairly good handle on it since I do tons of dungeons. However, I think it needs some minor tweaks that will improve the class tremendously that ANet seems scared to make.

Fooling around with a lowbie Thief and had a question to anyone that plays a Thief. Unless you have a ranged pet, would it be smart to put your pet on passive so the Thief can’t cloak and dagger ? Can we win a ranged fight straight up if the Thief can’t stealth every 3 seconds ?

Note: My ranged is Axe

Doing some research before rolling a Warrior and trying to do it right. First question is race. Do Warriors have good utility and elite skills ? …or is there room for racials.

Asura – Pain Inverter
Norn – Snow Leopard stealth

This guy will be 99% WvW. Roaming solo or partnered up. Taking camps, yaks and looking for a fight or two.

Depends on you gear, game mode, and playstyle? I play WvW so I use heal as one to offset damage spikes. I can also time heal as one to use it while I’m not poisoned whereas you may get poisoned while Troll Ungent is up.

Yep, forgot to mention what I do.

99.9% of the time in WvW. Mostly solo roamer taking out camps and picking off people trying to get somewhere. Thiefs are the bane of my existence so everything I do is trying to improve my chances to kill them.

Build is Heal/BM….but slowly fine tuning it to add more damage ie added Panther to replace one of my doggies. Added QZ. Combined I actually get some burt damage now and then.

Tried Axe/WH for the day. Damage is fine, and like you said, probably better than SB. The problem is in WvW I ended up getting NPC adds into my fights because of the AOE.

I do like that WH frees up a slot for me so I can add QZ instead of SotH

Actually with some practice you can abuse the NPC adds. A single NPC can increase your damage against your actual target because of the bounce your target gets hit twice.

Another tactic which works if you run a tanky build (I run full clerics) is to intentionally aggro everything you can against squishier targets like thieves. Neutral NPCs can and will aggro on to the other guy and the added pressure can really mess them up. If you can catch the mobs and the player in an AoE snare like Frost Trap they will often drop aggro on you and go after the guy they can hit easily.

It can also mess up their targeting and I’ve also gotten a lot of rallies off those random mobs I aggroed because my pet can usually finish them off easily (30 in BM), though the other guy can get a rally too if he’s smart. You do have to learn what you can handle obviously as well as how to control mobs a bit.

I do agree though that sometimes it’s a really big problem. I’ve learned how to make it work to my advantage or avoid the problems most of the time though.

Interesting. A couple of questions though since I am fairly new and still learning.

1. Rally of a mob ? So if you are downed, and kill an NPC with pet before the enemy stomps you, you will rally and revive ?

2. Richochet will hit my target, then the NPC, then the target again as compared to the target only one time if alone ?

3. Most things i have been trying to fine tune is to target Thiefs. I am not sure if adding nPCs help my cause, especially since many times Thiefs strategy is to add NPCs to the mix because they can stealth and lose aggro. I will test it more, but I can’t see an NPC being hit by my axe ever changing targets back to the enemy.

4. NPCs causing the enemy targeting problems may be true, but if it comes down to a targeting contest…I lose. I have a very hard time with it during the heat of a battle.

Trying to fine tune my traits. I used Healing Spring for the past month. Great heal, but I was troubled by having to stay in the same spot. Also, I took QZ off the actives because it ruins the heal. Recently switched back to TU. It is also a heal over time so I have to be very careful when, or even if I get to use QZ.

So I took a closer look at Heal as One. I can’t do actual testing until I get home. The tool tip on the build editor says TU heals for 856 each second for 10 seconds = 8560 heal. HaO heals for 6520 in a one shot deal.

Looking closer at it though TU is on a 25 second timer. HaO is on a 20 second timer.
So:
TU = 342 heal per second average
HaO = 326 heal per second average

TU wins by a little, but, it has a longer cast time, and, if you don’t want to waste any of the heal, you can’t use QZ.

Since I just recently started using QZ again, and really really like it, I was thinking of switching to HaO.

Thoughts ? Is my math correct or am I missing something ?

I can’t comment about PvP or PvE. In WvW they are fine. I am average at best, and I win at least 50% of my fights vs pure level 80s ( I am not including up arrows where I obviously win more). I expect good players win more than 50%, which seems pretty fair to me.

Rangers are good at roaming around picking off stragglers with the new speed signet …especially combined with GS. Can help the cause by soloing supply camps or helping defend towers/keeps.

Sure I think the trait tree was built by some guy making choices by throwing darts….along with some bugs that need cleaned up….but every class has bugs since it is a very new game.

Currently use GS + SB. 99% of online time is in WvW solo or with a partner. Currently either 0-0-30-10-30 or 0-0-20-20-30 depending on if I use TU or Spring.

So for numerous reasons, especially the movement help, GS is a keeper. I was thinking of sword but I need a constant DPS from range. Far too many fights end up with me chasing someone and without a ranged option they get away or it takes forever to finish them. SB works fine, but I was thinking of something a little more dynamic.

Axe/Axe – has range, although only 900. Playing around with it seems like it does more damage than SB.It only has one 3 second snare compared to SB 3 second snare and stun..which is very useful. I don’t totally understand the mechanics of Axe 5 and what it does exactly. I understand it blocks projectiles (arrows and bullets?), but what happens if someone gets into melee range. Can you end the 5 sec twirl ? Does it really add 10 seconds of 12% vulnerabilty like the cooltip says ?

Axe/Warhorn looks interesting especially since I have +30% boon duration.
Axe/Dagger has a longer duration snare

Any opinion helpful….but especially actual experience compared to theory.

blah blah blah. So much cheap talk. Step up to the plate and duel him…..applies to any of you who say you have no problems with Thiefs. Either the Ranger or the Thief will have to keep quiet after they lose.

I used this skill when first starting out. Never saw it work. Haven’t used it for a couple of months. For fun i respecced into it last week. Have yet to see it work. Anyone have any luck with it ?

I have neded up with GS/SB by the process of elimination. For my playstyle I need GS. I roam solo or duo in WvW. Hopefully cutting off people trying to get where the action is. I also take supply camps and points.

So I really like Swoop to help get around. I also like Swoop to chase runners…plus it’s a great combination with Lightning Reflex to get away from bad situations. Also, when actually fighting, I am a little slow with chaos of movement during a fight. I really really need Swoop as a range finder to actually hit an enemy that is hopping around. Another skill that is highly underated is #4 Counter Attack. Especially against Thiefs. That skill alone has won me fights I would normally lose.

I would like to go GS+S/W but the problem is I face a lot of runners. more than half my fights I need to chase someone to kill them. I need SB range to be able to hit them in the back to slow or stun them.

So as much as sword likely does more damage than GS, I don’t think it would work for me.

We have been using our newer commanders to get field experience most of the week, which have pulled us in a good chance to win this week.

I really hope the devs actively listen to these suggestions because they are great. I’d like to ask for smarter pets when dealing with stealthers. Seems my dumb pet spends my whole wvw fight with them running back and forth between me and my opponent. Only way around this is if I melee them but I’m more of a kite ranger so meh. If I could make my pets abilities somehow a part of my damage as a skill trait instead of having a pet out, that would make me happy too.

Unfortunately you need to waste one of your slots for Guard.

If you follow closely the advice on these boards you will realize Rangers use 9 skill slots.

Can’t use one brush to describe people who play Thiefs. Yes, the class will attract the “wtf I Pwn” playerbase. Those will go away when the class is adjusted. Some of the players that play Thiefs are pretty amazing. They take a strong class and turn it into a killing machine. They will stick around and still do great even after any adjustments.

The fotm crowd will be off to the next class they deem to be overpowered.

Not long ago it was stated they were taking a look at bunker ele.

Unfortunately along with that they are also taking a look at AoE’s and attempting to balance them… So ele will be hit hard but I have to ask What exactly is really wrong with ele? A friend of mine doing more tPvP than me (haven’t done TPvP since November) claims its how fast they can regen in water.

If this is the case rangers regen is almost on par if not better, countered really only by thief and maybe 100b (which isn’t hard to get out of)

So why is ele potentially getting the nerf bat and rangers not?

I run a trapping build and I beat thieves all the time. Only time i lose is if they use food buffs. I also see warriors soloing all the time. Trapping build requires you to move tho….if your sitting in a spring then yea the thief is going to kill you.

I am not a fan of traps. Number one problem is you can see them. Numerous times I have chased a trapper Ranger. As he runs he lays he traps. I see them and step around them. One time I was very motivated to kill a specific Ranger. He layed the trap and I said screw it and ran right over it. Damage is a mosquito bite.

Thiefs don’t fear traps with their stealth condition purges.

Let me guess, he used fire, spike, viper? Personally i run spike, ice, viper if i do a trap build, i use them more for the immob.snare and the healing butcher (the healing butcher is more for going toe to toe against other profs NOT thieves), pretty nice seeing as how chill + weakness + both on a thief = a very sad and miserable excuss of an opponent…

I’m not sure what the first Ranger used because I just stepped around them.

I read all these tips which always makes me ask …where do you use these tactics ? 3 traps sounds great in pvp. Using all 3 slots for traps in WvW seems tough to do.

There will be Thief adjustments. I know Anet is slow and steady with any changes but it will come.

Daoc in it’s first couple of months was just as bad. Assassisn could one shot someone in a group of 8, and not unstealth because it was a one shot. That was fixed just like this crap will eventually be fixed.

You were playing with your guild until they decided to chase rainbows and leave you behind. All the people that transfer will just end up chasing their tails. A strong WvW server today doesn’t guarantee it will be a strong wvW server tomorrow …and vice versa. Then what ? Another mass transfer to the next best and greatest server ?

Server transfers and merges are par for the course as MMOs age. Suggesting that there’s something wrong with guilds/players getting ahead of the curve and moving to the servers where they’ll face the strongest opposition, is absurd. This is behavior that ANet already enables (because they understand that it is necessary), and should be encouraging.

As MMOs age ? As in aged 5 months ?

From day one Anet has said transfers will cost. They had other things on their plate so the paid transfer setup was delayed. So yea, I guess you could say Anet is enabling transfers.

Your myopic view is missing the big picture. I can’t imagine any gaming company liking the idea of three servers with hour wait times and 15 servers with unplayable low populations. Pretty obvious that wouldn’t be healthy for their game.

Warriors…well, when was the last time you have seen a warrior solo in WvW?

I run a trapping build and I beat thieves all the time. Only time i lose is if they use food buffs. I also see warriors soloing all the time. Trapping build requires you to move tho….if your sitting in a spring then yea the thief is going to kill you.

What decent player doesn’t use food buffs or oils ?

And well from your responses I can only say this: You got what was coming for you, The higher servers have a lot of people and are full, if you want to join, well you’re gonna have a hard time.

Playing a couple T3 and one T4 match showed me all I needed. There are skilled PvPers outside the top tiers, but there are no competitive servers. And I want fights with some meat to them, there are a hundred fighting games and shooters that do twitch combat better, I expect more out of WvW than small scale skirmishing.

As for me “deserving it”, take a long drop with a short stop. Being able to play with my guild is not too much to ask in Guild Wars 2.

You were playing with your guild until they decided to chase rainbows and leave you behind. All the people that transfer will just end up chasing their tails. A strong WvW server today doesn’t guarantee it will be a strong wvW server tomorrow …and vice versa. Then what ? Another mass transfer to the next best and greatest server ?

so, in dabbling with other classes, it seems like many other classes have the ability to trait down the recharge times of both their healing / elite skills (maybe not all, but def some).

it also seems like these skills often scale, especially with power. (ie ele greatsword or the necro form do more damage if u have more power).

just feels sort of like ranger gets boned, since we cant trait down the recharges of either our heals or our elites, nor does entangle scale with condition damage, nor does the healing spirit scale with healing power. this seem fair? balanced? like fox news?

lol what? Unfair? We have THE BEST healing power scaling heals in the game, both heal as one and healing spring are 1:1 ratio in healing power, in addition to this our heals also have a REALLY low CD for their healing power —> actual healing ratio. Not to mention Healing Spring is argued by many to be THE BEST heal in the game because no only is a 1:1 scale heal, it also grants regen and removes condis from both you and allies, AND it’s a water field.

As for our elites we can trait down the CD of Entangle, RaO becomes massively OP when you have a large amount of boon duration seeing as how any applications applied to your pet and the initial buffs gained scale off of that, and if you have concentration training all the might applied from your pet attacking (IE get put onto the ranger) has a duration increase of 50%.

And then there’s the spirit… we can double his health, effectively making him immortal unless your enemy wants to waste their burst on it or they have their entire team wailing on it, it scales with healing power (mine heals for a good 440 or so health), can be traited to GUARANTEE it’ll use its active (rezes all downed allies and purges ALL conditions from every ally in range, no not just 5 on the purge), this can give you 3 mass rezzes and condi purges.

We do not have the short end of the stick, you’re just not looking at the full picture.

It’s official. Ranger is overpowered. Expect a nerf very shortly.

So that explains it. Saw my first one today. You’re right, they are very very fast.

As far as I can see, your copy paste build is completely different from the build you listed at the beginning of your post.

You will get kills. It will be a very slow kill most of the time. Once in a while you can’t get a kill. A few times I have chased a Warrior or Guardian who didn’t want to engage (places to go apparently). chased them across the entire map plunking them with SB and they were never close to dieing.

Well, I just had this happen to me last night. Fought a Ranger who had a Raven pet and used GS. He stealthed right when the fight started..then 2 more times during the fight…and yes, 100% it was a Ranger because i saw his signets when I clicked on him.

Either a hack or there is another way to get stealth that I don’t know about (since I am new it is very possible)

…oh, and for the troll named chops…I won the fight.

I deleted my Ranger. I’ve been Ranger/Thief for a few weeks. Swapping between the two. And I lost all patience with the Ranger and ArenaNets pathetic attempt at a “Ranged DPS” Class… I understand the issues to encounter when balancing, but it would be nice to atleast HEAR something is going to happen… So I’m going to go Thief and never look back.

I recognized the name. I remember a few of your posts getting after people who were having trouble with their Ranger. That Ranger was fine and learn to play the class.

A lot of people have issues with the Ranger and I really don’t see why. Sure the pets die easy, sure the Damage we deal is lower than most. But the reason we deal lower damage is because our pets can deal the same damage of us… So yes a Ranger alone is weak. But a Ranger + Pet attack is a lot more powerful than you’d think.

Personally I think Ranger is extremely powerful, and even if it wasn’t I’d still stick with it cause I enjoy it the most. I also love the Rangers downed ability more than any other professions. And people say we have the worst downed… Having your pet revive you seems pretty kitten useful to me. Thief and teleport a few inches or go invisible… In most instances that’s completely useless cause people and mobs still know exactly where you are.

I really don’t see why so many people complain about it, if the profession is so un blanaced and so broken to you, and you can’t stand it so much, why are you still playing as a Ranger? If you feel it’s broken then play as a thief or a warrior, something that isn’t “broken”. But to me Ranger feels balanced enough, sure it has some issues, I won’t deny that. The pet could be improved survivability, and maybe even allow players to chose their pets traits and attributes to be more related to it. But if Ranger isn’t for you then don’t play it. There are tons of people who love the Ranger despite what issues people say it has…

People use common sense please… Do you actually believe that progress WONT be grandfathered? Really?
Do you believe that Anet would ignore all the players that play wvw everyday now keeping the game alive?

People are using common sense when they say they don’t believe progress will be grandfathered. For a few reasons.

1. What would they base the grandfathering on ? WvW kills ….Dolyaks killed ….towers defended ?? I have a feeling it will be based on more than just your character history page.

2. There has been many posts/suggestions regarding rewards/advancement in WvW. Some people will say they don’t spend a lot of time in wvW because there isn’t any rewards. That if there were rewards they would have been in WvW all the time.

For me it would be great if it was grandfathered since I only WvW. It’s going to be a new system so It will start from ground zero.

I didn’t realize + healing in your build helped TU. I thought it only applied to Regens.

…and I don’t understand the theory that TU is better vs raw damage.

99.9% of the time i am in WvW. Solo or with a partner. Currently run SB/GS….and I think I have settled on that combo. Mobility is key for me and I really really like the GS Swoop. I have cooldown traited for sword so it really helps getting around. Also, GS combined with Lightning Reflexes has saved my life countless times. You put so much distance between you and a bad situation that most times you don’t even get chased.

I would prefer to use GS + S/T but far too often I end up chasing. I need the SB to keep the damage going (along with the snare and stun)
