Thanks for removing more builds from the meta like ranger and staff ele. For staff ele it was the only way to apply counterpressure and survive, the bird could survive due to ele heal and protection and hit the target when i cc people. If you think chubz ele build without vigor/evasive arcana procs works you just go the na noob syndrom, sry.
You seem to have no clue about meta builds. Most team q builds work around might stacking/air fire procs, why don´t you start nerfing this first or atleast wait until after the next big tournament so we don´t have to learn a whole new class and adjust the lineup and strategy?
Pirate was the only way for less op builds to get near to those classes who can stack might / proc air sigil.

Hopefully all the rewards are worthwhile. We wouldn’t want to see a repeat performance where a guild pulls out of the competition because they didn’t deem the 2nd place prize worthwhile. Most of us just want to see some good fights.

You have three types of people:
A) Those who will try various builds and ways of using them, compare them with other builds they’ve tried or know others have made, and play what they feel works best.
B) Those who seem to think builds just ‘exist’, and look for the ones that others have made, try them out, and pick what they like best.
C) Those that MUST know what the most popular build is because that is obviously the best, and what they will use.
The people C end up using one of the builds that people A made, and that was the most popular among peoples A and B. This becomes the meta. So ultimately, what you’re suggesting is indeed what happens. ‘Meta’ is just a word which means ‘most used’ and it is most used because it is believed to be the most effective at a particular purpose.
At least, this is how it is in PvP, and probably general PvE. The confusion comes from elitist PVEers, who test builds and team compositions designed for quick dungeon completions. Each of those elitist guilds finds what they believe to be the best, and tries to both prove it with recordings and force it upon the rest of the community by declaring it “the meta”.

Good post. To me, Meta = Sheeple. It always gives me a good laugh when on a Monday people demand that others use a specific build because they know it is the best and swear by it. Then someone creates a build that proves better. Now the people that were demanding a specific build on Monday have changed their tune and now demand the newer build. Innovators > Sheeple

No kidding. I still can’t believe that map was considered an improvement…..and if new maps are added, then older maps should be removed. Spreading a declining WvW population onto more maps is a recipe for disaster.

I have been getting a back to sanity reality check the past few weeks with a couple of other games. Can’t move as fast while in stealth and not being able to stealth in the middle of combat are just a couple of familiar stealth features I am used to. What a concept. That is how it has been with every other game I have played before GW2 and after.

- Often the thief is AoE’d down in split seconds resulting in a rally for the target for stomp.

- Almost non-existent, tripwire if multiple opponents step on it at once or infiltrators strike for a 1s immobilize.
Do they have high range on ranged attacks?

Can they stealth zergs?

- Yes, but due to self-preserving stealth and mobility and lack of hard-counters and sloppy play from the opponents. People often rush when they outnumber someone resulting in the most dangerous attacks from multiple opponents mitigated in a single dodge. If someone properly times and chains CC with good synergy that thief is dead.

So after reading this post it is pretty obvious that Rangers beat up on Thieves pretty easily apparently. Yet when you go to Thieves forums and ask who their #1 target usually is they will say Rangers. In fact some even say they won’t attack Rangers because it is so easy that they feel bad afterwards. good stuff lol

I wonder how long this will take to resolve. On Piken Square hardly any of us are logging on for the current matchup, mainly because the one thing we worked for – we didn’t get, so nobody sees the point of it at the moment.
I am stuck in my radiant outfit with a big red sword and its painful having to run around without the mistforge weapon I adjusted my wardrobe for.
There is no sense of closure to the season and it is making play an unpleasant experience.

seriously, 11 pages of QQ. And people wonder why Anet staff hardly bother coming to the forums anymore
idk, if I was Anet I’d totally read it just for the QQ. some of this kitten is hilarious! I get where ppl are coming from, I haven’t received my end-tourney rewards either… but the prizes aren’t really even all that great if you think about it. Places 1-5 are all going to have mistforged weapons, so it’s not like you’re getting anything unique. Not to mention nothing actually enhances your game either. It’s all just fluff. I’d rather get something useful like unique armor/weapon crafting options. Instead we’re given the choice of a weapon skin, minis, etc. I guess infusions or ascended accessories are nice… but it seems like a waste of tickets compared to the alternatives of receiving them.

Agree. I mean a glowy weapon is important….who doesn’t like a glowy? Get the bug corrected and then release the fancy new skins…because if you release it early, and there are bugs, the complaining will be much much worse.

For me it was being forced to play one way …by both the community and the way rewards are distributed. Many many players like the Scouting…defending…upgrading part of the game. That play style loses money at the end of the night…gets very little eperience….and gets mocked by the community. You can even get hate tells from both your server and the enemy server ….“WTH you doing by defending!?!?. You are slowing down the karma train” Those type of players don’t last long in this game.

The builds posted by Gawker and Sigmoid interest me the most. I was curious though – from the bit I’ve read it seemed as though zerker gear was a no-no for any player versus player combat for the ranger. What makes it work for you guys?
Also, Sig, I see you are using the Longbow without the “signature” LB traits from Marksmanship (increased range/damage, increased projectile speed). Do you find it still works just as well? Do you focus less on LB and more on S/D instead?

Solo roam is not specific enough. Zerg surfing or looking for 1v1 or 1v2 fights are two completely different play styles. A good build for zerg surfing will most likely suck in a 1v1….and vice versa

Roaming and zerg fights are two completely different things. It would be like asking for advice on what car to buy. You like to cruise on the highway going 80 mph with the top down listening to tunes but you also need a car to handle transporting your wife and 4 kids.
Pets don’t work well in zergs. They insta die. So having 30 points in BM seems like a waste to me. Your weapons also only have 900 range. So you need to be close. Conditions will eat you up especially since you have zero for clears.
Roaming and 1v? I think that build looks pretty good…except for no movement speed.

I can tell you from experience …both using something like this and facing something like this. First thing out of my mouth when I got melted by a Ranger like this was WTF just happened.
It is likely right what someone said earlier…1v1 is iffy. I agree if they know what is coming, you could have a problem. If they don’t though …well, it is shock and awe all over them.

The problem is the insufficient report system. I don’t even think that those “reports” are ever reviewed, even if multiple reports of the same kind are filed in in short time.

A video proves nothing. Some players are so good they could make a video not wearing any armor and still produce clips of them winning fights. Would that make a believer out of you and inspire you to “try their build”?
It’s all relative to that particular player. I know for myself going from full Dire to almost full Rampager improved my winning % in WvW …and especially against Thieves. So for me, Hybrid works well. For someone else ? …..who knows

Just watched the video. Very very nice ! Good for a laugh Question. Most of your damage is cleave? I know it is far easier to use Sword to it’s full ability when you don’t have anyone targeted ….but you didn’t have anyone target most of the fights ? …other than when you call out a target.

Was poking around in EB last night with my thief buddy, we killed a small enemy group few times. Every single time they tried to pin me down and ignored my friend, so I kited and he killed them. Soon after the guardian (I’m only assuming it’s him, could be the warrior too but the guardian died more) started to whisper me and accuse me of speedhacking. At first he either blocked me or he dc’d as I couldn’t reply to him at all (He however reported me for abusive language, which makes me wonder how can I do that if I wasn’t able to even reply to him in the first place?), but then after he said he had me reported 5 times he either unblocked me or was sticking around for long enough for me to be able to reply few lines. So! As I am not a speedhacker and I have nothing to hide.. Here it is. Me running in circles without speedhacks. I’m using all my cooldowns defensively since these guys were trying to focus me down while my sidekick blinds and backstabs them. I have high endurance regen due one trait plus I get vigor from my stunbreaker, both weapon and survival skill cooldowns are relatively short due the CD traits I had picked. No black magic there.
So the point of this post is merely to reach the dude who accused me and prove him wrong. I found this quite amusing but at the same time a bit upsetting that someone who claims to know the class ends up throwing accusations like that. I also posted this over at http://www.gw2wvw.net since the match up topics are there. So if you know the dude, could you forward the link to him? The moving golem runs in a pretty easy to follow path, it’s not constantly dodging, strafing, and repositioning itself the way a player does.
Thats like saying, I could trait for CCs and traps so my pet can hit the target (hence swiftness from birds is not needed). Its better to find out potential DPS imo. Stationary and moving golems are perfect for this. Also, if its PvE, your targets not going to be moving a lot.
I almost never PvE. My main concern is how effective a pet is against other roamers in WvW where they are constantly shedding conditions like cripple, chill, stun, and are dodging, evading, stealthing, and teleporting around.
I like the felines for flipping a camp, they do great damage against the stationary npc’s and they let me stack might. But for roamers I go with wolf and raven. Wolf for control, raven for dps.
I don’t think a Ranger can flip a camp any faster than when he is a condi/trap build with Drakes.
That’s possible. How fast do you flip them? I know my condition engi and necro can flip a camp faster than my power ranger but I needed a break from the passive play. My power ranger can still flip a camp in under a minute and he can move around the map faster.

There are numerous nice choices for sigils that proc on crits.
I am trying to find the right combination of EQ by including Rampager for some pieces…an extra layer of damage. The better player you are the more pieces you can add.
50% of 0 is still 0. Since you have no power then that doesn’t do anything for you. Sigil of earth is nullified by sigil of geomancy. Sigil of torment is ok, but then you give up either corruption or doom for it.

100% of your damage is conditions? Using your link sword 1 does 212 damage. When it crits it does a little over 300 damage. my Sword 1 can hit for 800+
As mentioned also I try and sprinkle in a little power with Rampagers to make it even more noticeable.
You lose some survivabilty, but the damage is off the charts with Rampagers/Celestial combo sprinkled in.
I was very similar to your build a few weeks ago. As luck would have it I came across an Ele with Diamond Skin who laughed as I watched the ‘Immune’ spam as he danced and laughed at me. A little later that day it was an Engineer who caused the same message because he was immune to conditions at 25% health. Figured a slight adjustment was in order.
On a side note. No other class or build has given me as much success vs thieves. They absolutely melt. That alone makes it worthwhile to me to have some power and more crit chance sprinkled in

And Rangers barely hit more than 3.5k (full berzerk), could go up to 5k if they buff well but you know how long can they keep that up… 5 seconds and everything falls apart.
Game needs multiple roles for every class and playstyle, including Rangers.
I didn’t realize Engineers had 1800 range.
Assuming they did, stand an Engineer 1800 units from a Ranger. Let the Ranger fire at Engineer while Engineer fires grenades. Guess who gets hit and who doesn’t?

I am the first to admit Rangers have issues. I try and play around those issues and play to their strengths. a 5 man snipe crew zerg surfing and focus firing would insta kill people from a long way away. There would be complaints.
If I am in the mood for something more front line I would likely play a different class rather than complain that a Ranger isn’t the best class for that role.

Seriously, you can’t name a class that wouldn’t be dead serious in a squad, with the exception of Rangers, which is possible, but requires the skill and preparations, not like at all the others…

Maul is the only ‘reliable’ form of burst available to this class, but without a Fast Hands style trait, it’s mostly ineffective.
Our other high damage attacks would be Path of Scars and Counterattack, but both are much more unreliable and ineffective imo.
Now that all said… a Greatsword with an intelligence sigil which you can then use to crit on Swoop+Hilt+Maul does do a reasonable amount of damage. But the problem with greatsword has always been, if you don’t kill the opponent, you’re stuck with a mediocre weapon for the remaining 6 seconds while you wait for Maul to come off cooldown or swap weapons.
Completely nailed it. What a culture shock to go from my Warrior to my Ranger. The ability to switch weapons quicker is a massive advantage.

I am really surprised I haven’t seen or heard of a Ranger gank squad yet. You’re right, it might cause an uproar to nerf Rangers.
A 5 man squad zerg surfing would 2 shot any cloth class from 1800 units away. ( 5 Rangers x 2 shots of 2k a piece =20k) (actual damage would be higher)
A Thief would want no part of trying to gank one of those Rangers.

I hate the new system. I am not a pve guy so don’t have a lot of the areas/zones discovered yet. I level all my characters in WvW.
So I have bought one of the traits for my Ele…2 for my Ranger..none for Warrior or Thief. I have a 52 Necro and a 21 Engineer that I won’t finish leveling. I am a semi altaholic but no more.

Longbow is very good against squishies. Against a bunker there isnt much you can do. The key is to peel them from range with 2-3k auto attack shots. You also have solid life expectancy if you go survival skills.
That being said, inside combat is far superior in this game then ranged combat. If someone gets on you, and most meta builds can, you will lose out to pressure pretty easily once your utilities and pet abilities are on CD.

1. Positioning. Initial position and constant reset of position.
2. Target selection
3. Awareness of your surroundings. It is always changing
4. Pressure pressure and more pressure. Put them on defensive
5. Know when to hold..and when to fold
In regards to pressure. Mesmers drive me crazy. I don’t like fighting them. Usually I try and out play them or finesse them. Rarely works. Today got on my Ranger for first time in a few weeks. Semi-glass LB. Bumped into a Mesmer right away. Went pure pitbull mode on him from 1800 units. Before he had time to think he was at 30% health. He bailed ….and died. People tend to panic when the HPs are dropping fast and especially when you are out of their range.

Put a few hours into the Ranger today after not having played him for a few weeks …been playing Warrior. Crazy culture shock. Played a semi-glass LB. You need to be on your toes at all times. It feels like the Ranger goes from full HPs to almost none in a flash. I guess having lower hps…toughness, and not having 1600 hp regen every 3 seconds is quite noticeable

I main a ranger, warrior, and ele (although I play every class). I still think warriors are OP lol, honestly, they are too easy to play and have a much larger reward. But, if ur rlly having trouble, the easiest way to 1v1 them is to take it slow. Look at their animations and attacks and dodge the ones you need to. Its the easiest way to beat them imo.
That’s, again, for if u rlly have a hard time fighting warriors.

I win maybe 90-95%+ against warriors, in spvp, I pretty much only lose to Vassangel, and even then, its always a close match. He ends with around 10-20% health nearly every time. The only other specs I would have trouble with are cheese shouts/like 5 stance, double endure pain, condi resistant, dogged march, -100% condi duration, full dire warriors. again, lol.
Same goes for if im a warrior. Against other rangers, I win probably around 95% of the time. Lol, the other 5% are the good regen rangers that are pretty hard to kill. Those usually end in a stalemate for me.
Well that is more logical. It doesn’t matter which class, you out skill your opponent. So because you beat Warriors easily doesn’t mean Rangers are strong or Warriors are weak….it just means you play better than your opponent.

There is no legitimate reason why dueling isn’t available. Especially since PvP is different than WvW (pve). Harmless fun that was a blast in both WoW and daoc.

I know u said decent condis, so he might have been running a celestial setup if he also was able to tank and still have decent direct dmg
tho, if u saw a permanent regen boon on him, he was more than likely apothecary regen ranger build
Sometimes I feel like I am playing a different game …or maybe an alternative galaxy. If I only played a Ranger then I really couldn’t comment one way or the other. Same as if I only played a Warrior.
Since 40% of my WvW time is on Warrior and 45% is on my Ranger I can comment.
When on my Ranger I beat Warriors maybe 25% of the time. When I am on my Warrior I beat Rangers about 90% of the time.
How some Rangers consider Warriors as an easy fight confuses me……since that isn’t the case for me when I play both classes.

It’s neither solo roaming nor small scale roaming. You kill ennemies beside another random mates, you’re never focused. Actually, it’s not even fights. I don’t get the point.

Well to be honest, with how glassy he is, that’s they play style he is built for. ….I know I know, there are hundreds of you out there that are also as glassy and win most of their 1v1s ……for the rest of us smucks, that build just won’t hold up in a true 1v1, especially if the opponent is built for 1v1

But the “Be on VOIP or GTFO of WvW” attitude we see from some commanders is ridiculous…
It is not ridiculous. Most players not on TS are usually rallybots that are best left at home. That doesn’t apply to ALL players but it is a general sentiment that has been reinforced by experience. Knowing where a commander is turning, going, dodging, etc is not only useful but for out numbered zerg busting situations a decided advantage. A zerg without voice comms is at a tremendous disadvantage to one that has it and uses it.
I would point out that a player doesn’t have to engage in the voice chat, but listening is usually a very easy thing to do. I often mute everyone but the commander and simply listen mainly because I find chatter distracting.

Question. Most of your damage is cleave? I know it is far easier to use Sword to it’s full ability when you don’t have anyone targeted ….but you didn’t have anyone target most of the fights ? …other than when you call out a target.
