I don’t know why exactly rangers are such a bad class, but Anet needs to fix them. I’m a pretty poor fighter (I panic) but every ranger I meet is a free kill for me.

Do they need condi purges or something? They just run around doing ineffectual damage until they die, surely something needs fixing there.

I am pretty sure even rangers look at other rangers as free kills. I don’t know what it is about rangers than makes 95% of people play them so horifically, but it is really quite obvious.

100% true. If given a choice when picking a target I go for Rangers every time…no matter what class I am playing.

There are different factors that come into play that determine your success …or lack of success. I think the analogy of a pocket QB vs a scrambling QB fits nicely.

You have your quick twitch players who are excellent at reading the enemies combos and avoiding the damage. They are great at skill combinations to do maximum damage in 1v1 (scrambling QB)

Then you have the guys are are good at positioning. Using terrain to your advantage. Recognizing when it’s time to move and reposition.

Two completely different styles. I think that’s what causes some of the disagreements here when people try and explain why a style works for them.

Longbow power build is viable atm. 6/0/2/6/0 with SotF and read the wind, lb as main and gs offhand is pretty decent. You will be squishy as hell but it’s not your job to fight on point, your job is to snipe those pesky power necros/staff eles, or put presure on the enemy bunker.
Spirit ranger is pretty cheese in my opinion, but that’s just me, i played it but got bored of it pretty quicky, it’s almost a no brainer

^^ this is probably your only option. The build is great at what it does. I played this for a while and is a viable point pressure build. It has its advantages and does have it downfalls. As stated, you generally cant fight on point with this build being so squishy so generally capping is out of the question so generally you are designated to a roaming/support offensive build, meaning your teammates who are on point are relying on you to do sufficient damage or theyre screwed. You can apply significant pressure on point from a safe distance by sniping with autoattack/quickness, or AOE with barrage. You have excelent mobility with GS meaning that you can be back at home point in a short amount of time to assist home bunker if he needs help.

Your main problem however is other roaming classes (mainly theives and mesmers). Other burst/DPS classes fill a variety of roles better than what the ranger can do. This is why ranger bunkers are so common as that is what they excel at.

Theives specced for burst (which they usually are) also have dificulty fighting on point, being super squishy and all and mostly being restricted to melee range to be effective, meaning AoE and cleave is dangerous for a theif, which is usually in abundance on a point teamfight. so their job is to intercept and burst down lone players roaming around the map, or to assault your home bunker and try and spike him down/decap. The problem is… you are one of those lone players on the map that a theif will assault. His advantage is he has equal or superior mobility, stealth, and higher burst. So a theif will easily get the jump on you and your screwed, because once he knows your game plan, he will be on your kitten the entire game.

Mesmers also have great burst, stealth, mobility, AND a bunch of decoys, so on top of being an excelent roamer that can burst you down quicker than you can burst them, they have defences that can confuse the crap out of people which allow them to somewhat fight on point, making them more useful in team fights or confuse the crap out of you when they find you, making killing them that much harder.

Other DPS builds (usually warrior/guardian/necro) generally have some form of reasonable defence built in allowing them to fight on point with no loss of DPS, meaning if you are attacking a point out of range not taking damage, your teammates who are on point are absorbing more damage without you there. So you really have to do significant damage from a distance to make the tradeoff worth it, or as i said earlier, your teammates are screwed.

Unfortunately, the damage you do from range is considerably less than a burst class that either has the potential to fight on point (thus being more useful in a teamfight) or will out roam you with superior mobility/stealth. The build kind of semi fills the roles of both point offence and roaming, but will never be better than classes specced into doing one of those two tasks.

While this build is viable to some degree, it is outperformed by other classes. If you wanted to play a LB sniper build this would definately be the way to go, but be aware, other classes do your job and fill your roles better. The only advantage to this build over other burst/dps classes is the range, but is kind of a double edged sword.

Snipers in other games, the real world, and any story you ever read aren’t exactly known for being able to survive a one on one encounter at close range. So why should GW2 be any different if a Ranger decides to build for damage at long ranges?

I never understood this attitude of getting joy out of ruining other peoples’ plan with no gain to you.

EotM is not WvW proper. Why is it on the WvW tab? Because it’s related to it more than to PvP or PvE. Just like Obsidian Sanctum is, and that is not WvW proper, either. Think a bit before posting, will you?

People karma train in EotM because it is rewarding and anything else is pointless. This was intended as such because it removes players from other, more important, areas where they were damaging the game (Queensdale champ trains being bad for new players and WvW farmers and uplevels being extremly bad for WvW).

If you and your guild participate/lead defense activities in EotM, then I am sorry, but everyone who is whispering you telling you all sorts of nasty stuff is right. Not to mention that beating up cripples (aka uplevels, like most ktrainers are) is not only not worth bragging about, but quite shameful. It also teaches you nothing. You think it will be the same when doing WvW proper against serious opponents? Man, I would want to see the look on your face when you and your heroic guild go there with this attitude.)

On a side note, if you do not care for PvE and want to level faster, either do PvP for some loot and the Tomes of Knowledge (one level each) from the tracks, or (oh, the irony!) do EotM karmatrain for quick levels and WXP. But could you do the latter? I mean, doesn’t it fall short of your “code”?…

Just because you’re playing the game wrong, it doesn’t mean we all should.

I’ll laugh so much when Anet decide to do something about EOTM Ktrains. In the meantime my guild leader says he’s going to start messing with the Ktrain on a daily basis and record it for our amusement… should be fun!

Yeah, my group has been trolling the EotM karma trains ever since it was implemented. After we have wiped the other two enemy colours a few times, they generally rage quit then my team colour dominates the entire map at which point we change into a different overflow and repeat the process. Funniest thing is, we are only a small group of 5 players. And yeah, we do get the occasional PM from a crying karma trainer (sometimes even from our own team) because we messed up their train. LOL.

Good for you. More people need to do that. I would gladly join any group that has plans to pummel any and all ktrains

  • Remove 30 from Skirmishing and put it in Nature magic. This way, you can gain the benefits of fury from Survival of the fittest for big bow dps increase. Plus, you get some good survivability skills. You’re a sniper, not a beastmaster.
  • Owl isn’t really good for wvw, your owl will blow up. Use Krytan Hound/Wolf combo for AoE immobilize/fear. Otherwise, use some other utility pets.
  • Put sigil of fire instead of accuracy. It will bring a consistent small burst/huge sustain dps increase.

I think we are on the same page.

The idea is situational bursts mostly on LB-2 with fury/quickness from pets. I’ve taken some condi damage negation out because you pretty much need to LReflex or Sword Leap out of there if anyone’s paying you enough attention to apply conditions.

From there you can either continue to kite them with muddy terrain and entangle and DPS or you can reposition and continue situational bursts.

There’s also a tiny bit more general survivability with the trait changes to improve toughness and get protection on rolls.

Pretty much the same deal as the original poster. You have traited 2 skills from Skirmishing that are completely not useful …( Yes, the line sucks so you don’t have much choice).

Rather than pigeon hole yourself into that line just because of the crit chance/crit damage Just put enough points to get Quick Draw if you really want it. I could argue that even Quick Draw isn’t really needed for a sniper.

..and I guess it comes down to peoples definition of what a sniper is.

You are pretty much full glass. Should deliver great damage with your LB…..but a strong breeze will kill you.

I know the Skirmishing line is helping your crit chance/crit damage but man there sure isn’t many, if any, good choices. If you are sniping a zerg from far away your pet won’t really be involved….so those traits don’t help much. Although there really isn’t any other decent choices.

I would probably think hard about removing 10 points from Skirmishing and grabbing another more useful trait from another line.

Dueling? Maybe if you are a really excellent player you would have some success. I sure couldn’t pull it off with no toughness/HPs or healing.

Elementalists have some of the most painful levelling in the game.
This is for a few reasons:
1) Power is loaded into higher-tier traits, rather than utilities. For warriors, you can solo half the game with just endure pain and healsig, but ele’s have nothing on that level.
2) Eles have the lowest health/armor in the game, so it’s just more difficult to survive in general.
3) They are also the most mechanically difficult class, just to achieve a power level comparable to any other class. Thieves would probably take second, but it’s pretty darn easy to repeatedly stealth on the ai, who refuse to do anything about you while you’re invisible.
As a part of this, abilities aren’t particularly viable on their own and need to be used in conjunction with others.

No, if anything they could scrap Rapid Fire and implement an “Ice Shot” ability that does damage, chills, and vulns and is used to keep them at bay, instead of rapid fire which just confused players into thinking it’s a damage increase.

Yep, when you think you are hitting for 4-10k per rapid fire shot it appears that way.

Not per shot, that’s total, but it flashes up (adding the damage) everytime an arrow hits during rapid fire making it look like it’s dealing a big chunk in damage, yet if you were at far range then you’re just lowering your damage by using it AND if it’s a 1v1 they’ve probably closed the gap by the time it ends.

Thus why I said …when you think you are hitting for 4-10k per shot …as many new players do

Basically, this chart is very useful for anyone who was thinking of making a power build. What he’s ultimately saying is that the Soldier’s amulet is the strongest when factoring both offence (power based builds) and defence

It doesn’t factor in any of the other stats. Condition damage or healing power, for example, doesn’t play in to his formula…

So it’s not exactly a big revelation. If i’m reading this correctly, the underlying message here is that stacking power is more useful than trying to add in critical chance/damage.

I am still trying to decipher this but I don’t see what you are seeing. Zerkers looks like the baseline for damage (100%)

The meta is not an answer, it is what the masses claim to be the truth regardless of the facts at hand.

Do we live in a dictatorship? Last time i checked, we had a democracy. Democracy means, simply put, power to the masses. So if the masses decide that the ranger is too weak, they may be not that far off track as you may think.

The “masses” also thought the world was flat. I eschew anything to do with the masses. Innovation and thinking outside the box are the way to go.

I have been on nearly every server in EU and seen how it developed, this is my opinion but ANET just dont get it players are so serious in WvW and competitive that is great but the game is not build around.

The server doesn’t mean anything is all about coverage people play wvw to fight not siege and cap and farm champions, it based around GvGs.

And as for map chat all i see on all servers is “Join Teamspeak” and dont get me started on the personality of people on team speak.

its the community im talking about its like a bunch of zombies running after a commander no one talking on map chat the guilds are the community and there dieing off

I’m seeing this on my own server in both pve and wvw, the community is drawing into guilds which isn’t the most positive thing I’ve seen happen to the game.

In wvw, Map and team chat don’t get much talk despite there being people on map. And our guilds are preferring to run tagless operations in enemy borderlands so they don’t attract zerg hangers.

I suggest if you aren’t already getting on server teamspeak if you have it, so you aren’t left completely out of the loop.

I was trying out the glyph for weakness after reading about it yesterday here on the forums. It’s ok, but I also like armor of earth so will switch back.

Tornado was an accident in the build. I use FGS 80% of time and elemental 20%

I can swap a couple of jewelry to add some hps.

Preamble: My main is a Ranger. I dabble with Ele. Most of the time I am S/D. a few days ago I was on my Ranger, who at the time was power/regen spec. I saw a supply camp had swords so went to take a look. Me and two others showed up. Guards were did and a solo Ele was there. So we went after him. Being a Ranger I was targeted by Ele first. He was like a pitbull on a bone…D/D Ele. No way I could shake him. Always in my face. It was like watching a scene from Cops where they try and subdue a guy on pcp.

The only reason I lived was because I was very tanky. Eventually the 3 of us killed him. He never ran away. Impressed the hell out of me. Si decided to make the switch to D/D and try it out. Amazing fun. I kinda suck but still had some 1v1 kills…even beat a thief.

So this is a slapped together build. Would really appreciate some advice on how to tweak it better.

Edit: ..and my combos suck. I can’t get the lf+burning to land. I assume that is the start of everything and you adjust after that. I have been doing rtl into burning but obviously doesn’t work as well

Yes, I agree RtW shouldn’t cost anything. It should be a stock skill.

Is it worth it to spend points on? Pretty much anyone that has used it in WvW says it is.

im planning on using lb and sb with power precision and ferocity stats but i heard that sb hits like a rubber chicken since its a condi weapon

Some Rangers here use double bows. SB damage is fine using a power build. It has 1 bleed and 1 poison on 9-12 second reuse timer. It bleeds from behind target. I don’t consider it a condi only weapon.

Well, each character can hold up to 8 bag slots x 20 items per bag = 160 item slots.

There are 17 different prefixes in the game, 16 of which has all equipment except the back piece only has 6 different combination (exotic).

Each character has 6 armor slots, average 4 weapons, 5 trinket slot and 1 back piece slots. Totaling about 15 slots x 16 prefixes = 240 items. Plus the 6 possible back pieces = 246 different items. Minus the currently equipped set 246 – 16 = 230.

He said he has 4 characters and 12 bank tabs. Each bank tab is 30 slots. If he dedicate 3 tabs (90 slots) per character. Each character can have up to 160 slots from bags . That’s 160+90 = 250 slots per character. And there is STILL 20 slots to spare if he is truly “max out” as he claimed.

Even if my estimate is a little off, if he is truly maxed out he still has about 80 extra slots.

The OP either has
1. Has extraneous stuffs that are not soul bound that we don’t know about and he’s not saying it.
2. Has repeated sets (like 3 berserker sets? with different runes)
3. Organization problem

since crafting is still one of the easiest ways to level, and your throwing out crafting materials, you don’t seem to be hurting for money so you can afford to buy more bank tabs and I’m sure your inventory is maxxed with all 20 slots on all toons also right?

haha, not bad, but tbh, its kind of unrealistic to have full ascended and infusions on every slot… lol, unless ur rich, go for it, but here’s a build that might be better for u

a LOT of condi duration, slightly lower stats, a ton of condi clear, more bleeds from the extra sharpening stone, and more healing (I don’t like healing spring cuz it forces u to stay near it for condi to be removed, the regen isn’t that big of a deal, and 4-5k initial healing isn’t great with the health pool u have, so if u have the condi clear, troll unguent is a lot better imo)

you can swap out some things like the sigils of malice for sigils of agony, or the signet of renewal for signet of the hunt if u feel u have enough condi clear, but w/e works for u lol

Seems like a waste of the healing points you have in your build when other than your healing slot you have no other healing going on…like sig of wild, shout heals or equipment heals

I don’t think that has to be true. The so called condition weapon has a 2.5 sec poison every 9 seconds and a bleed every 12 seconds. Unless you are lucky enough to be behind someone.

Sharpening Stone, Keen Edge, Torment+bleeds on crit (25% crit chance is fine) and you are doing ok. Not to mention the added 600-900 range depending on how you spec. Don’t matter how much a condition weapon it is if your target is out of range.

Ironically enough just had a condition fight vs another Ranger a couple of days ago. He had SB and I had LB. I rarely got hit.

I never mentioned the shortbow, but he was using the shortbow alongside a fear build, so the enemy will be showing his back a fair bit during the fight. The bleed also hits from the side, too.

Hitting the enemy and doing damage is another thing, though. When using dire stats, the longbow does very little damage compared to using the weapons I suggested. The longbows damage scales with power, if you don’t have power as a stat on any of your equipment, there’s little reason to use it.
You can’t rely on critical hits to do your damage via sigils since his build has a 20% crit chance, his build also isn’t using sharpening stone, but if he was then that would be 5 stacks of bleeding every 45 seconds, same for keen edge. Completely outclassed by the weapons I suggested which offer a mix of permanent poison upkeep, chilled, weakness, cripple, bleeding and burning.

WvW doesn’t happen in a vacuum. In a perfect world I completely agree with you on your weapon choices. Sometimes it’s kinda cool to be able to start fights from a long ways off. Tenderize the steak so to speak. Another perk is you likely aren’t getting hit while doing that damage.

Last dumb question. Ascended gear is only for like characters? I mean cloth ascended can only work with other cloth characters?

Moot point though since Ascended gear is out of reach for me.

So im running the fear build now its just to good we are talking an 8s fear from player hiting you lol and a 3sec fear from the wolf.

Ive been playing this in pvp and people just cant kill me its so good at avoiding damage team with the silly amount of condition damage you do its a beast.

ok, I see a small glimmer of hope here. All my stuff is exotic and has been worn. So that stuff I can’t do anything about…but, if I slowly start replacing jewelry with Ascended, that stuff can be shared among all my characters? ..If I am reading this right?

Unless Anet changes things, Ascended armor and weapons are not in my future

I do the same, but fights tend to be very mobile. Especially with my guild since we run counter hammer train. Relying on my target to stay out in the open and for me to remain safely off to the side is never a possibility. Piercing Arrows is needed to account for the highly mobile method in which zergs collide on my server. Especially when doing GvZ.

Makes sense. I am by myself, so I am not part of the ebb and flow of zerg fights.

See, I consider piercing arrows to be mandatory and don’t like RtW. In Wvw, you need your arrow to hit the target you’ve selected. The only way to do that with so many people involved is with Piercing Arrows.

If all you do is roam and duel it’s less important because there’s less stuff in the way. But when you’re playing longbow as a back line class who’s only mission in life is to attack the opposing teams back line glass cannons, you need every arrow to hit.

RtW isn’t needed because 9 times out of 10, the opponent won’t see where the arrows are coming from anyway. Only time I’d consider using RtW is in sPvP where I’m trying to 1500+ range an opponent running toward me or something silly like that.

But by that same token, I’m not a fan of EE either kitten damage and the extra range is meh in the grand scheme of things so I’m either running RtW or SotBM.

I mostly roam but do fall into ZvZ at times depending on the map. In your scenario about sniping GC classes in the back lines …I do that also, but off to the side so i have a direct line to them. Allows me to get a little closer. I wouldn’t know any other way to attack them.

I would bet a lot that my Ranger has pretty much used every piece at least once in the last month. If I could delete a few pieces and get back what I spent to acquire the piece then I would. I don’t think that I would though.

I would love to hear what you actually storing in that bank of yours. Is it all exotic armors and weapons?

You can also get invisible bag and put it on bottom of your inventory so you can carry that extra set on you and don’t have to worry about selling or salvaging it, because it will stay in that slot.

95%+ of my bank is all exotic armor/weapons/jewelry

Yea, I just deleted 3 stacks of 250 each of some kind of crystal that I get in Wvw. Can’t sell it or store it.

Just get rid of the excess. I doubt you need all that stuff. I have 13 level 80 characters, and I can’t even fill up 3 bank tabs with all the gear I need.

Ascended trinkets are easy to get so just break down you exotics. If you really, really need every single exotic armour then you are going to have problems with any option mentioned above.

I am not really sure what you mean

He means salvage/sell exotics and clear your banks for ascended gear only

I have played the game since a little after it was released. I have 2 ascended items…rings that I just had drop recently in WvW. I could buy a couple more jewelry items with Laurels…..armor and weapons? I can’t sell the exotics since they are used. Salvage gets me a piece of wood or something which does me no good.

Even WvW you get dailies. So rings/earrings/amulets can be gotten ascended variety. You also get a discount for ascended jewellery in WvW. Since you do not craft you will get very little to none ascended weapons or armour so if you need to keep them they are soulbound and can only be stored in your personal bank and used by 1 character. Those pieces of wood are worth a lot of money.

Yep, I complete my daily about 25 times during a month. I also finish the monthly. So I have about 200 laurels. I could buy a couple of rings or necks and have a slight improvement of stats…if I bought zerker stats though and wanted to go condi ..or healing…or bunker etc etc then those pieces would need to be stored.

The best answer I see is to use alts as storage. Which is what I will do. That answer was helpful.

good, as long as you realize that an alt cannot take soulbound equip from another character even from the bank.

grrr, so that means if one of my players has equipped an exotic sword and put it in the bank……that an alt can’t store it.? If that is correct then that would have been pretty easy for someone to say responding to my original post.
