People who think ESO has a Cash shop clearly don’t know what an actual Cash Shop is.

GW2 has a Cash Shop.

ESO has Account Services (Character Transfers for example)

As for the Comparison between WvW and AvA in ESO..

There is no contest, ESO AvA is far far superior.

Not only does it run way way better….(Zero lag…and I mean that..Zero..I have never seen an MMO to date have the performance that ESO has in PvP)

It doesn’t have crappy gimmicks like GW2, There is no Down System, If you want to Res someone, You have to walk up to them, and cast a Res Spell, that takes like 10 seconds almost to cast…If someone interrupts you, You have to start over with the cast.

It also doesn’t have an AOE Cap, Countless times in beta I’ve seen 8 People absolutely Blow the Hell out of Large Groups of Players trying to Zerg something…

If you bunch up in ESO, you will die… Like you’re suppose to.

The Map is also vastly superior to GW2 as well…I mean its not even close… Not only its it bigger then all the Borderlands,EB,EOTM combined…It actually pushes you not to zerg objectives…

You get more for killing someone Solo, Then you do for taking an Undefended Keep..

There is no contest..It is the better PvP Game.

You mentioned stacking, yup, with a proper cc and aoe combat system, stacking will get you killed together. In this game, WvW again encourages you to stack as many people into the blob as possible. I never understood how stacking and following the train encourages tactical play. To me it simply encourages zerg blobs, which as we see today, is the case in WvW.

This one has always baffled me….“stack on me!!”

I still take heat for not stacking with 10+other people. I come from Daoc and that’s the last thing you would ever do….which also seem like common sense for any game.

1. Because as I have said the Ranger is just that fun to play. It is the most fun to play. It is why despite having fully geared lvl 80s of everything else but Necros I keep coming back to my Ranger if just to run world events for a little while.
2. The pet already doesn’t work as intended so the “spirit of the class” was never achieved.
3. I care. That’s how much I love the Ranger. I want this class to be better.

That pretty much nails it. The reason people want the choice to stow pets isn’t because they don’t like pets …it’s because pets don’t work right, and it’s a problem that Anet has acknowledged. So if Anet can’t solve the problem…and they say they can’t, then another solution has to happen.

IMO, the discussion on pets is becoming overcomplicated. Why not just redistribute the power, fix the F2 timing, and keep them as-is? The pet is not the problem if you swap it, its the pet hitting things that is a problem.

Also I am not super happy with the idea of stow buffs and even less happy with a perma stow. The pet is part of me as a Ranger, it is one of the core things of the class.

You may not be happy about permastowing. I would be absolutely. Furthermore, if you could stow your pet, you could still use it like you are used to. And people like me, who don’t want to rely on the pet can stow it. Simple as that.

As Orca pointed out, some people aren’t as fond of the pets. The idea of the buff would be to appease everyone. Also, what if stowing the pet and having an aspect gave the Ranger some kind of aura that communicated to others they are in that “aspect”? Would it still feel like the pet was a part of you if them being stowed affected your physical appearance?

If not, I don’t think the aspect idea would be a necessity for players. There are definitely things that need to be done to fix Ranger pets in general, and it’s something we are well aware of. If we fixed those things, but maybe also added in the aspect idea, I think we’d be in a spot where everyone would be pleased, no?

I just read a recent post there from a guy that hasn’t posted in the Rangers forum in past 6 months (I didn’t go back any further). All his posts are about PvE encounters and he’s also involved in every post about class balance. I’m not sure what class he plays but is an apparent expert on every class.

He’s not really making suggestions other than arguing about what other people have suggested …basically muddying the waters with spam.

Pretty much what I expected.

It’s a good thing I’m not drinking when I read through the CDI thread so far, because most of the ideas are so depressingly bad that I don’t know if I’d be able to maintain myself lol.

Seriously though, I’m irritated for putting my suggestions up so early. I mean, I had to do them at some point, but at this point, I seriously, seriously, seriously doubt that this CDI is going to produce anywhere near the result that the community hoped it would produce, due to a combination of the the thread being handled in a way where it’s just “throw out your ideas at us” and people who don’t understand balance or are trying to project how they want the class to play onto the class and make it something it isn’t flooding the CDI with suggestions.

The CDI should have been much more philosophically centered, so that it became an open dialogue between the community and devs about where they think that class is versus where we think it is, and what direction they want the class to go versus what direction we see the class going, and how we could meet in the middle somewhere philosophically while ironing out any physical balance issues that are brought up along the way.

Sadly, entering the CDI thread right now just looks like a spam email folder…

It is horrible over there. I am seeing suggestions from people that I have never seen post before or if they have posted, it’s about every other class except Ranger. Some of the suggestions are so horribly bad it’s laughable.

This is not dissimilar to asking your 4 year old what he would like for dinner. You have pretty much finished cooking a dinner of spaghetti and meatballs.

So you ask him to tell you everything he would like. You let him ramble on about all the different foods he would like for dinner. When he finally says Spaghetti and meatballs you clap your hands and say …"that’s a great idea. Go play for a bit and when you come back down for down I will have made exactly what you wanted …spaghetti and meatballs.

We are being punkd.

I’ll echo Khisanth. I got a HEX after the first beta weekend and it’s been wonderful. Though I move by holding down both mouse buttons rather than pushing the mouse with my thumb, as I want to keep all my movement on the mouse and skill use on the keyboard, so it might not suit your style.

It comes with a few thicknesses of thumb pad. I applied the thickest one, like a null button in the middle of the set. I actually only use buttons 4, 5, and 6, those being strafe left, move back, and strafe right. I don’t remember what I set the others to.

Thanks for the tip on the Hex.

I have dabbled with holding both mouse buttons for movement but I can’t click target on something and it locks out some of the other keys when I have both mouse pressed. Hard to get used to. That would be great though to have all movement on the mouse to free up other hand for actions.

Having a tough time finding the right combination.

I have a mouse that has some extra buttons on the side. It’s hard to explain but I can’t use those buttons on the side (thumb). All the pressure is on my index finger pressing the right mouse key so I can turn. Left mouse to camera turn or target something specific. If I lift my thumb the mouse is not controllable.

I have a steele keyboard. I use the left side of the keyboard for Forward and back movement. Strafe left and right. Keys beside those that I use for nearest target, weapon swap and 180 turn. Plus a key to speak on TS.

I can’t reach the 1-5 keys very easily so end up gasp clicking 50% of the time.

Just can’t find the right combo to be able to mouse turn (one hand), move forward/back/strafe (other hand). Can’t find a way to use actions without clicking.

This likely makes no sense
Just curious how other do it.

I know that im out of topic here and not using the format proposal and i apologize for it ,but before posting any ideas about the ranger and having into consideration that this will be read by some dev ,i will like to ask something :

Would you ever (or have you) considered the removal of the pet ,knowing how borked the ai is ,and as anet says ,it can not be reworked because its tied to mob ai?

Or would you consider split the class in to two, ranger/beastmaster ,and rework the pet ai from the ground.

Again sorry for the offtopic and thx for any possible answer.

Removing the pet was something that was discussed in initial design of the class, but it is such an integral part of the Ranger’s design and philosophy.

There might be some ways that we can redesign the pet and it’s AI, but those are big projects. For the time being, we are happy to take any suggestions regarding the pet.

I can imagine it would be a huge job. The problem is the pets don’t work because of the games NPC design. It’s why a solo player can pretty much run through any zone and not die as long as he keeps running. Mobs can’t hit them when they keep running.

Since the pet is the same as a mob, they don’t work that well in WvW. Small man action they have a hard time hitting their target and in large fights if you don’t keep your pet beside you on passive they will die. Having to keep your pet on passive doesn’t seem like that is very useful for the Ranger.

If you can’t fix that then Ranger pets need to have an option of being stowed for a particular engagement and give the Ranger a damage boost.

It could be argued that a realistic representation was made when the majority of players voted to have Ranger get the CDI because they felt it was broken enough to warrant it.

Of course, it also could be argued that the forums and the opinions therein represent such a fractionally small percentage of the playerbase that any suggestions forum users have should never be considered.

Fact is, the opines of your “2-4” are no more or less valid or representative than the opines of any other forum user.

On a related note, I look forward to reading your opinions in the CDI because all ideas for Rangers are GOOD ideas at this point!

Maybe, maybe not. I do know many of the ’suggestions’I have been reading are outrageous and don’t have a hope in hell of being implemented. Total fantasy. The problem is the good ideas are being hidden by all the nonsense spam. Some people picture themselves as game developers and they are doing Anet a favor by redesigning the class.

It’s a new game show ..Guess That Build !

I am still learning the class so the build wouldn’t help me. You play very well. The things I need to work on are the combos. Like someone earlier said you do have a fairly set combo that you start many fights with..then adjust how the fight develops.

I was just on my ele and can’t figure out what you are doing with LF and Burning Speed. I don’t see any combo there

I think it was a Prysin post that made a lot of sense. Before everyone here starts writing walls of text giving their opinion on what needs changing we should be asking Anet what their “current” vision of the class is. How they think the class should perform. Once we have that, then we can tell them where they fall short.

Just another example of flawed human nature. The path of least resistance to try and be a part of a winning team. As a server you never want to receive these types of transfers to your server. They are temporary mercenaries that will leave at the first sign they are not going to succeed. A server like Kain is a template to what is going to happen.

Shouts don’t just have instant cast time. They can be used while you are channeling other skills. I think you can even use them while stunned/knocked down. Guard is the only shout where you can’t do this.

As it currently stands, Guard is a shout in name only. For all intents and purposes, it’s a regular utility skill, not a shout. The only advantage gained by it being a shout is that you can reduce its cooldown with a trait to reduce shout cooldowns.

It has a 15 second cooldown (12 traited), and it is very easy to get enough boon duration to stack on perma swiftness and especially perma regen with it, as well as perma protection for your pet, and if you have the right runes even remove a condition every 13 seconds.

True, but you’re incorrectly attributing those benefits to the skill. They come from picking a grandmaster trait. The comparison isn’t Guard vs another skill; it’s traited Guard vs. another skill + a 10 point trait + a GM trait.

The pet getting permanent protection is a non-issue because it already gains permanent protection. 1 sec cast time + 12 sec cooldown = 13 sec cycle time. 30 points in NM to get the GM trait gives +30% boon duration, increasing the protection’s duration from 10 sec to 13 sec. So removing the cast time wouldn’t change this appreciably (it’ll eliminate a fraction of a second where the pet has no protection due to human reaction time).

Likewise the condition removal comes from a set of Soldier runes, not the skill. Yes the cooldown is lower, but if you look at the average cycle time for shout skills, warriors can remove conditions more often with that rune than rangers, albeit not with a single shout. Given the poor state of ranger active condition removal, I’d only consider this a viable argument if they put active condition removal on more ranger skills.

Sure, lets give “Fear me” a Cast time, but because of the increased risk, lets reduce the cooldown from 60 seconds to 30 seconds.

Lets remove the cast time from Guard, but because of the reduced risk, lets Double the cooldown from 15 to 30 seconds.

risk vs. reward, its a very simple concept, and almost everything in GW2’s combat system revolves around it.

I’m not sure what sort of comparison you’re trying to make. Fear Me is an instant get-out-of-death skill. Someone is about to down you, you use Fear Me, and you live.

Guard does nothing like that. It repositions your pet, gives it stealth and protection. I’m not exactly seeing the decreased risk you’re talking about if it were made instant cast.

The swiftness and regen come from a GM trait. Any imbalances for those two attributes should be addressed via modifying the trait, not increasing the cooldown on Guard.

There are two fundamental problems that you and many others always run into when talking about Guard…

1) that you always miss the 1 second where the Ranger has to cast “Guard”. That is a second where the Ranger is not dealing damage, and that is a second where the Ranger is open for attack. The Entire shout was designed with a low cooldown, on the condition that the 1 second of risk is built in.

Being able to just press guard every 12 seconds means your pet can potentially always has protection (not to mention 10 seconds of stealth stealth, and you could potentially have free perma regen and swiftness, and remove a condition), and there is never an opening for an enemy or enemy player to stop that from happening if the cast time is removed. Keep in mind that is every 12 seconds. Where in your head does that make sense? Think for two seconds how a change to guard will affect the entire game, not just Ranger pets.

(The mentioned “Fear Me” is a get-out-of-jail-free card, but its also on a 60 second cooldown (as is our get-out-of-jail-free card, Protect me). The risk there, is that you can only use it every 60 seconds(obviously less if traited), so, if you waste it, you waste it. Guard does not have that limitation. Keep that in mind too.)

2) whether you like it or not, and whether it works or not, pets were designed to be an integrated part of the class. So, unless you can name me another skill that grants 10 seconds of protection and 10 seconds of stealth, with a 15 second cooldown, your argument for buffing Guard is invalid.

“Keen Edge” trait activates even if you don’t have Sharpening Stone on your action bar. So, you should replace that with something else.

I’m not completely understanding your point. Sharpening Stone lets me start the fight with 5 bleeds. I am pretty sure Keen edge then kicks in when the health threshold is reached.

I made to get the most use out of my ascended rings and items so i just have to change armor lol. With the interrupts in both weapons i guess confusion can be a thing, not sure.

Interesting 3rd build you posted without techno. power/crit chance/crit damage and condition. I have no idea how or where to get celestial armor…the regular stuff if available. I know I can buy ascended trinkets but having a tough time pulling the trigger since I change builds so often

Some good stuff. Has made me think twice about the Torment proc on crit for my weapon compared to sigil of earth. Earth procs twice as often but the Torment is an extra cover for the bleed.

I noticed you are using spiders!

They are great for close quarters ranged combat because you can keep them between you and the enemy. Control skills will land on the spider instead of you.

If he walks through the spider to your side, you do the same.

I have never heard of that. Is that because they are a ranged pet? …and only applies to control skills and not damage?

You’re not breaking any rules here…
You’r build is just safer to use, but less effective against most of people.
Overconditioning blobs are not solo roam, but you support it well, meanwhile you may able to kill foes 1v1 if you move well.

Always appreciate any comments but not really sure what you mean there. If I run with the blob I usually use a different build/class. Ranger is usually outside any blob or tying to find people attempting to get to blob.

Their current vision for the Ranger class may or may not be relevant here. It is possible that they’re finally considering a different vision for the class if the community has a better idea. Thus they asked how we want to see them EVOLVE the class.

I’m not entirely sure what place the ranger class ought to have at the moment. Best single target ranged DPS class? Best single target or AOE cc class?

I just think it’s funny that the staff ele can bring DPS into the table whilst stacking in a dungeon, even though that that weapon seems to be designed for a ranged encounter.

Hunters’ longbow is designed not to work this way. I understand the reasoning behind this, kinda like Mesmers with their Greatsword, but unlike Mes, Hunter’s sword…

I hate to be negative, but I will tell you what I think when I play another class. When I see a Ranger in WvW what do I think? ………my first target. ie Victim. Of course there are exceptions but I think in general most people think that way.

I agree with the idea. I think the two best…and most realistc (since it wouldn’t take a ton of Anet resources to implement) are

1. Turn pets into buff bots
2. Give option to stow pets…and increase Ranger damage

What they have now doesn’t work…and will never work with the way NPC movement works in this game.

Looking at the new EoTM map it’s pretty clear Anet loves Skyhammer-like features. It’s not going away.

So glad those were fake. I guess I jumped the gun with my frustrations, but nerfing a skill that there are currently zero problems with sounded.. kind of a typical of what I expect from ranger patches these days.

theyre not fake, maybe outdated. anet makes a post about this every time, and it’s always a lie. people pull this from alpha builds, so likely theyve just been updated.

anyways, the pet responsiveness fix is needed but only a small step forward. cast time needs to be 0.5-0.75s at most because pet slowboating to its target is enough for a cast time in itself. some abilities are 2 freaking seconds. unbelievable. the only f2 that affects the outcome of fight is wolf fear, thats about it. anyway, this stuff is small beans. ranger needs big sweeping changes and someone to man up to it.

So the Dev said "I am here to say that they are not. It appears the poster has taken some of the notes that we have in this thread in an effort to make their own look more legitimate, and mashed them together with some imaginary notes. These are not real patch notes.
This is a reminder that when patch notes are posted by a source other than ArenaNet, they should not be trusted. Particularly in the context of a “leak.”

Seen as you didn’t take the time to read the post from the Dev’s they clearly explain how the person whom made the note’s got there information.

Looks sound, but I would be worried about the rather shallow health pool when fighting other condition tanks when you have no perma-regen. Our condition builds usually win be attrition more than dps but the confusion and torment might make up for that.

I put the wrong heal up

I always use TU but for this one I used Healing Spring for the extra condition removal…although I agree 66 heal a second is a tad weak.

That’s a good point about Shouts. Warrior Shouts have no cast time. I’m not sure how having a cast time on Ranger Shouts is done for balance?

I have been trying something new the past few days. Having some success, but it is too early to tell with the lousy WvW available lately (thanks Anet) This is for solo roaming in WvW

This is a condition build but I am trying to get a jump start on the conditions from ranged before having to fight in close. So obviously I am using a SB? Nope, LB. I would like to use SB but can’t stand the range or the position requirement to use the bleed. So rather than start the fight at 900 units with SB i start it at 1800 units with LB.

With Sharpening Stone, Bleed on crit, Chance for Torment on crit and 20% chance to land Confusion I start many fights with a good chunk of conditions. Hopefully pet lands some poison and/or an immobilize and the enemy has lost a bunch of hps before getting in close.

In close I can land my own poison, some fire and hop around buying time while conditions tick.

A few things concern me. I always like having more HPs. I have also considered adding some more healing but I am not sure at the expense of what. I know Axe 2 in close would help more with conditions but I like the way I can evade attacks with sword, plus, even though I am not great with it I can get ahead of the zerg with sword2 at times. Axe has zero mobilty.

I use GS at times to help get across the map and when entering a fight I try and swap in spike trap instead of signet of the Hunt. When getting my stacks it is crazy damage with spike trap,Axe 2 in close, Sharpening Stone and Torch 5. Easy to get 25 stacks in a minute.

I am open to any suggestions, comments or advice.

So glad those were fake. I guess I jumped the gun with my frustrations, but nerfing a skill that there are currently zero problems with sounded.. kind of a typical of what I expect from ranger patches these days.

theyre not fake, maybe outdated. anet makes a post about this every time, and it’s always a lie. people pull this from alpha builds, so likely theyve just been updated.

anyways, the pet responsiveness fix is needed but only a small step forward. cast time needs to be 0.5-0.75s at most because pet slowboating to its target is enough for a cast time in itself. some abilities are 2 freaking seconds. unbelievable. the only f2 that affects the outcome of fight is wolf fear, thats about it. anyway, this stuff is small beans. ranger needs big sweeping changes and someone to man up to it.

Whats so hard to understand about it..

Since WvW queues are no longer a deterrent the servers have started cannibalizing each other.

The good servers feed off the medicore ones leaving behind a bare skeleton of what was. There’s no incentive to stick to crappy servers outside of some form of loyalty. The points-per-tick system makes coverage the all-decisive measure of success.

WvW population is also down this week simply because farming Lion’s Arch is so kitten lucrative.

WvW population will also take another dip when Elder Scrolls Online launches in 6 weeks time. But that’s nothing you can stop.

So yeah, it’s going to be a rough WvW for the coming weeks and I don’t see much change ahead.

I question the ability of Anet developers to actually think ahead before making a change. More and more people transfering to the larger servers because of it. Anet were blind if they didn’t see this coming. Combine with new content and WvW is a joke.

It’s almost as if they have conceded the WvW concept to EOS and daoc unleased, because they sure do everything in their power to ignore it.

Well transfers earn them a lot of money. So I doubt it’s a problem for them. In fact I’d wager transfers are the only way they earn much money from WvWers.

And the feature update they announced is directed straight at TESO and designed to minimize the player fluctuation during that time. It’s pretty common practice among MMOs today.

Release a massive update around the same time your competitor launches to retain your players with interesting stuff until their curiosity dies down. ANet wasn’t born yesterday and have planned ahead accordingly.

You can beat your kitten the “feature update” will come pretty close to 4.04.2014, the date TESO launches.

We will agree to disagree on that statement. Yes, transfers make them money, but it is not self sustaining.

I think they earn the most money from WvW. Especially the people that only do WvW and are trying to be competitive. Personally I would never spend money for PvE…because if I was good at it, like many are, you just have to do the dungeons/crafting etc that people prefer to do.

I was just talking 1v1 fights when you bump into a thief. It seems I have better fights vs PvP thieves rather than getting ganked in WvW in similar fights.

Not commenting on group/team/zerg usefulness.

Walls of Text aren’t bad, as long they are clearly formatted, good readable through this and make use of spoilers to blend out text passages of maybe other topics to visually reduce the size of the posting, so that the reader can stay focused on what interests him/her and those things, that saren’t of your personal interest, stay just unopened under their spoiler.

However – I made a few minutes ago just a test for myself with a suggestion concerning the thief to see, if I can put really all of my thoughts together in 150 words and I surprisingly were able to put that off , when I could have gone far more into details xD

-They are not going to redesign a class
-They are not going to redesign the game

They are going to make tweaks. Small adjustments, then sit back and reevaluate. I have seen far too many posts that completely redesign a class or parts of the game. Not …going…to …happen.

Had some nice fights where I blew up a thief when I was hit by 2 people and I also got blowed up good by a power necro. Playing this isn’t second nature so it’s difficult to tell if any lack of success is me (likely), the build or weapon set.

I am thinking I need more HPs. Maybe at the expense of some of my toughness. I was also thinking of maybe taking away some of my offense and add more healing?

Anyone run anything similar? ….or have any suggestions?
