ofc there are people that are going to say: his opponents aren’t organised bla bla well i don’t see the need to be organised for 5 man to kill 1 guy – it’s not a huge PvE raid boss or something.

Edit: My view point is from both playing a zerker at times and facing a zerker Ranger when on my Warrior. The range and damage of the LB can be overwhelming if you aren’t ready for it.

100% true. The WvW chat channel is always filled with people complaining about Thieves. No other class produces the amount of frustration and anger to the player base. Most bit the bullet thinking that Anet would make some much needed adjustments. They haven’t, so I agree it has forced people out of WvW …or into zerg blobs only.
The majority of those chat comments (as well as half the comments on these forums) are about how annoying thieves are because they can’t be seen and they can be so evasive, not because they got killed by one. Burst thieves are indeed powerful 1v1, but thieves in general pretty much suck in a group battle as countless posts here have also pointed out. *Situational disparity exists in almost every game … it’s what makes you actually have to think. Try it.
Annoying does not equal overpowered or broken. Read the frigging GW2 thief class description and educate yourself*
You can try and justify it and make excuses. It’s really very simple. People play to have fun. If they have fun, they continue to play. If they don’t have fun, they leave….and what many don’t want to accept. We don’t all lose every fight to thieves. There are 3 common outcomes. 1. Thief wins. 2. Opponent is winning but thief stealths and runs away. 3. Thief makes a mistake and opponent actually wins.
All 3 scenarios are not fun for the non thief. Even after beating a thief I am ready to log off in frustration. It’s not fun.
Maybe you educate yourself and see what every game in existence does when their customer base isn’t having fun. They try and fix it.

The current sword system is too limiting. They could tie them into the WvW maps so the last activity reported by a guard in each area would show up.
A map message sent out from guards and scouts being attacked with a rough estimate of the enemy numbers would be very interesting. These would be passive, easily turned off for those that don’t care, would direct players into more fights and would help eliminate the need for the very unrewarding job of PC scouting.
Agree. If that is what it takes to succeed I wonder how much fun those people are having sitting in a tower. How many days of that before they decide to play a different game? Does Anet think that is ‘rewarding’ game play?

DAoC had a really great mechanic where the guild that claimed a keep or tower would get messages in guild chat when a guard near their tower was killed. The message looked like “a guard from your tower was killed with 25 enemies in the area” and showed up in guild chat even if you were in a PVE zone.
That is a good system. It definitely feels like something like that is missing out in WvW

I think highly skilled thieves are almost impossible to counter. One took 5 of us out in approximately a minute in SM today. We all knew the thief was there but had no answer – one or two hits & you were down then the thief vanished before anyone could try & counter. Should their stealth skills be nerfed? I don’t know. Are they any worse than the op hammer wielding opponents or any other perceived op classes?
Yes, they are a lot worse than other any perceived OP classes. At least I can see the other classes.

I have played many games with stealth in them. At launch, if they found out that stealth was too strong they patched it to make it balanced.
By far GW2’s version is the most asinine part of their game. How someone could think their stealth system up, implement it and not see a problem is amazing. Even worse is they actually got paid for their idea.
It’s a deal breaker for a game that has a lot of potential.

Why is it so difficult to make out a help request? Request won’t when I don’t have the serial code they ask for. Where is it located? I have my 2 discs…the box…the outer casing and the installation manual. I don’t see any serial code anywhere.

Sword imo isn’t as bursty but will catch and out damage GS rather quickly. Auto chain won’t kill you unless you let it. Try dueling someone with s/d. It is difficult to keep up with the movement. Use the chain to disengage 800 units away and use your bow if you don’t use GS.
LR+ sword 2 chain = great separation for kiting

I really like shield but have a tough time giving up offhand sword in a condi build. Although I realize condi is only part of the package in this build.
Not a pve guy or crafter so don’t even know where to get exo celes gear except maybe Laurels? Which I am too cheap and undecided what to buy.

Edit: WvW zerg surfing. Playing around at work with some theory craft. Not sure if I can get enough swiftness with the blasts and windborne or if I will need Sig of Air.
GW2 version it sure is. How anyone from Anet can collect a pay check after coming up with their brilliant idea of how stealth should work is beyond me. They should donate it back to the company in shame.

This is my armor, full ascended beserker everything…
I’m not trying to one-up you or be too critical, but if you are having trouble killing with 3700 damage and 54% crit before foods and Rampage As One, then I think you are doing something wrong.
I don’t have ascended everything so my stats are closely behind yours, but I decimate the average WvW player that isn’t ready, isn’t paying attention, or is retreating / straggling behind. I think that’s a great strength of powerful Rangers – the ability to mop up multiple enemies without breaking stride.
That is exactly how you play a ‘power Ranger’. For a change up I will play that type of build a couple of weeks at a time. I can’t stop giggling when I chase a focused 40+ man blob and pick off the last guy. The 150% damage modifier on a 80%+ crit damage shot does very good damage. You can kill someone before the blob even realizes it.
It also works great vs perma stealth thieves that try and troll.
1v1 you better be a highly skilled player because all things being equal you will likely lose. That’s why it’s great you can switch things up every couple of weeks.

I am all for the nirvana of perfect class balance. Some people have great ideas. Some just like to whine with no realistic suggestions. I am not suggesting everyone that complains about class balance is bad at the game. It does apply to quite a few though.
What I am saying is for these types of games, every class seems to take a turn at being on top. I don’t think it is an accident. As most say, PvE Rangers are one of the better classes out there. PvP – All we do is get complaints from the rest of the game about being overpowered. WvW? Personally I think we are middle of the pack. Better than some, worse than others. GvG in WvW? Probably not the best. But that goes to the heart of what I am saying. There will only ever be the top 4 or so classes that will be included. Those classes are fluid depending on class balancing and/or the community discovering new strategies. Dungeons? I don’t do dungeons but what I read is Rangers likely not the best. See note above re GvG WvW.
Overall if you l ook at the above Rangers are not bad overall. Every class could use some tweaking.

This thread delves into specific problems in specific contexts and gamemodes – there’s no assumption that rangers exist in a vacuum here. Of course there will always be people kittening about balance issues, but that fact doesn’t a priori invalidate all complaints. There are innumerable threads across the forums where people bizarrely argue that because everyone is kittening, everything is balanced. Those sorts of arguments, like yours, are actually the ones that presume a vacuum since they fail to consider the specifics. Instead of coming out with moronic, over-generalized posts, then, perhaps you might actually take a look at the specific arguments detailing why various players and classes find certain mechanics and abilities problematic, and maybe then you can enlighten us as to how we’re all so woefully misguided.

A very oh so common I am bored thread. Very well written though without the usual bitterness. It’s simply burnout. When something is new and shiny you overlook the flaws. As time goes on the flaws start to bother you more (sounds like a relationship)

You think it is a full zerker Warrior? His survival looked too good for full zerker. Combine that with his traits and 25k HPs and I’m not so sure it is full zerker.

Just tried this. I change builds with my 3 classes quite frequently. Used this type of build last night and have to say it was one of my better nights. This is how I slapped it together last night. Likely still needs some fine tuning …or any suggestions from the pro’s!
Old post is old …but even after the patches the original question still holds true. Most of my builds are built for roaming and 1v1 fights. Against every class I do ok. Win some..lose some. At times I get pummeled because the other player is very good.
The two classes I hate fighting are Thieves and stealth Mesmers. Even when I do win against a Thief I am annoyed. They aren’t an enjoyable fight. Which is why every few weeks I play a troll the Thieves build with my Ranger or Warrior. If there is a group or zerg skirmish I sit back and wait for a Thief to pop on someone. A few arrows from Ranger ..or rifle shots from Warrior. Then time it for Rapid fire or Volley just before thief tries to stealth = dead thief.

You are not playing the right warrior build it seems, maybe not your playstyle.
Not the build, but more likely a lack of skill. I was basically responding to this …Go try playing a warrior, then come back and play your ranger; you too will feel the issues with the ranger magnify about 10x more.
Warriors are obviously in a good place now. 6 months ago when I was on my Ranger and fought a Warrior I felt bad because they didn’t have much of a chance. Now the roles are reversed

For WvW, Ranger is a lot of fun. I switch between 4 different builds depending on how I feel at the time. Each plays differently.
You can beat any class or lose to any class. I would enjoy myself even more though if there wasn’t the Thief class. Bane of my existence. Can be having a real fun session before running into a Thief or two. Win or lose vs Thieves it doesn’t matter. Fighting Thieves annoys the hell out of me. Too many of those fights and I will log off. Or, I end up using one of my 4 builds…the troll thieves build. High burst Rapid fire build = they die when they think they can get away with stealth.

I have only ever used the Stone Spirit. So I don’t really understand how they are so effective. For instance Storm Spirit. It gives a chance to proc swiftness during a fight? What am I missing understanding why that is important. I see it has a /use every 20 seconds, but the damage shown on the tool tip(354) doesn’t look all that earth shattering.

Where or how do you get this stuff? I don’t know much about it. Mainly I was interested in buying exotic celestial trinkets. The build calculator mentions them but I don’t know where to find them.
Also, I noticed on the laurel vendor that some of the trinkets cost laurels and some cost laurels and plasma? Do the laurel/plasma have better stats than just laurel?

Technically the OP is correct, each of the weapons/professions combinations do have attacks/moves that have a longer range then the short bow. But it is usually just one of the attacks on the weapon, the Mesmer Great sword being the the only one on the list that has multiple attack with range greater then 900.
That being said though I think that speaks more to the design of the short bow then to the ranger. Thief with a short bow has the same 900 unit range.
The ranger has the longest range when traited, 1500 units, though thanks to arrow arching, under ideal circumstances the long bow arrow can hit almost 1800 units.
Now I will admit that I find it funny that a traited ranger can throw axes and daggers further then they can shoot arrows with the short bow, begging the question of why I am not just throwing the arrows since that seems more effective, but I digress.

Hi guys, I’ve heard that ranger is bad from everything from dungeons to pvp to zerging. Whatever the case may be, this build kicks certifiable kitten for roaming. I thought I’d publish it and see what everyone thinks, here it is:
Hello, I play s/d zerk ele for small group / solo roaming in wvw.
It is really glassy, but I can pretty much demolish anything that I get the jump on. My main burst comes from arcane blast, earthquake, lightning flash, fire attune, phoenix, ring of fire. On most non-bunker players, this will down or close to down them. For more bunker types and those that stunbreak/invuln your burst, you can continue to put pressure on with other skills, or retreat with RTL. With zerk ele, you are really glassy, so a lot of your survivability comes from blocking and blinding the enemy’s burst and killing them first. It takes some getting used to, but after you learn your limitations it’s quite enjoyable.
Edit: Nice, that is glassy for sure. 123% crit damage? Never seen a build with it that high. How well does Lava Tomb work for you to get you up again after being downed?

If you really want to burst someone I’ll give you some general guidelines
- Spend no more than 5 points in arcana tree.
- Change your heal, and signet of earth… (it will only work on beginner level players to help you land your dragon tooth) to lightning flash
- Increase your power, critical damage and hp
- Decrease your armor a bit
Unless you really like to burst or are willing to spend a great amount of time playing as a burst ele in wvw I wouldn’t recommend you go with this playstyle. As a burst ele is not a matter of downing players in 1-2 seconds (again only bad players will get downed within this time frame on 1v1). It will mostly require you to analyse your opponent build and predicting some of his most beneficial skills/rotations to avoid them. In short it is all about countering and outplaying your opponent and knowing when to use certain skills. It will lead to frustration if you don’t pay attention to anything else aside of your own skills rotation.

As mentioned earlier I main a Ranger but like taking some runs with my Ele and Warrior ….and it’s usually a bit of a gong show because the hours played on those 2 classes combined in WvW doesn’t even come close to Ranger.

Granted my video is 4 months old, but even after all the patches this build has been working pretty solidly for me. If anything it’s become even stronger with the more recent GS buffs. The only change I can tell you I made recently is that I use both River Drake and Marsh Drake for my pets now since their F2 skills are not only one of the more reliable ones in terms of connecting the attack, that amount of might stacks you can get from RaO is intense. Bored at work so I decided to put together a build for WvW. Solo roamer +zerg surfing with the occasional supply camp. Was using a S/D condition build yesterday but didn’t feel right
I would like to be able to burst someone down quickly and if I get zerged have the ability to get away and reset.
Completely open to any ideas or suggestion.
My main is a Ranger who’s main play style is what I would like to do with my Ele. Hit hard and fast. If they don’t die quickly I am out. I don’t stay for long drawn out fights unless specced for it.

I always thought that when you increase Ranger attributes it helps the Ranger do more damage but doesn’t do anything for the pet. That the pet improved via Beastmastery.
Playing around on gw2skill editor I noticed that cats bleeds do more damage when you increase the condition stats/duration on the Ranger. Is that a bug?

Tried out your idea tonight with a few small tweaks. I preload 25 stacks of precision and then swap weapons. Crit chance is 60% with SB and 65% with A/T
I use axe instead of sword to get more conditions…especially Weakness.
I dropped any healing to load up on Precision/Condition/Toughness. I’m sure I will adjust more.
I use Keens edge instead of Malicious Training. Not sure if Keens Edge and Sharpened Edges are on same timer? Shared Anguish instead of Vigorous Renewal and Natures Protection instead of Natures Bounty.
Still considering adding 10 more to skirmishing and using traps.
Had some great fights tonight. When things go right and the conditions are stacked up peeps die fast.

That’s true. Although I have only witnessed one person be able to pull it off successfully over and over in one of his videos.
Plus, if I was going to use this build that is one of the changes I would make. Add axe and remove sword. Weakness is just too good to give up in a condition build.

I really like your build idea. I would do a few minor tweaks but I think it will work well. The only problem I see…and it’s a big one is how you will get away from zergs.

Whats going to happen is after it becomes apparent in the first few hours just how hopelessly outmatched you are, you will come on to the forums and state that:
1) SOR only blobs
2) Maguuma is far more skilled on an individual level
3) SOR only wins because of coverage
4) SOR players always run away if not in a zerg
