Agree you will do some damage. I will disagree enemies won’t chase you because you are 1500 units away. The truth is you will be an absolute magnet for Thieves and the resulting quick death.
Not sure why you have a bear pet.
Is this some type of role playing?
As a PU Mesmer who gets 3-shotted by a Longbow Ranger at 1500 range, I have to say yes.
It won’t take long to get that bad boy Mesmer to level 2. Then it will only take 4 shots to kill you. It keeps getting better and better though every time you level.
L2P according to the thief:
You should guessing where the enemy is, unleash your six sense. Because a enemy thief is like an NPC, you can “learn” their moves, because enemy thief does always the same moves, because he is mental deficiency. Feel it bro, feel they move, close your eyes and feel the KI around and HIT HARD.
Is because that nobody play a D/P thief, because is easy to fight against. Too much pro guessers.
L2G, learn to guess.
That is some good advice. I’m going to go watch Blood Sport with Van Damme. He was able to defend himself with his eyes closed. Maybe if I watch it a few more times I could gain the power needed !
Very entertaining. The music was great !
The build is interesting. You made a comment later in the film about the build making you overconfident. More accurate would be your skill level is making you over confident. You play very well.
I only play WvW roam so I don’t think this could be translated to that genre
What would you think would be the best pet to use as a solo roamer in WvW that has a full stack of Masters Bond.
Obviously it would have to have a combination hps/toughness and yet be able to do decent damage.
Drakehound?
Tell you want Urdriel, pick up my Beast Cannon build, its a PvE burst build, see how much damage you can do within 8 seconds at full speed sword + pet AA, and compare to a warrior with it’s best DPS setup. I think you may be in for a shock.
Can you link it, please? Don’t think it was posted in this thread.
Geared for the highest offense. Normally you run with a more defensive setup using cavaliers pieces
Masters Bond and Zephyr Speed don’t seem compatible.
Excellent.
Dunno how you survived that first fight with the Thief. Barkskin?
Nice movement
THERE IS COUNTER TO STEALTH. Stealth doesn’t give you protection nor invulnerability, you still take full dmg in stealth, you still sit in CCs, YOU DO NOT DO DMG WHILE IN STEALTH (unlike mesmers), there are 1000000 ways of preventing thief going into stealth, there are 10000 ways from preventing thief dmg out of stealth.
QQ like this is reason why you guys keep dying to thieves. Bad players QQ -> class keeps getting nerfed every patch -> most thieves either quit or reroll -> only very few dedicated still play class and get good at it -> those few dedicated are still capable of kiling noobs -> bad players QQ -> class gets nerfed again…
No matter how much Anet will nerf the class, really good players will still kill bad players and place their amazing quaggan finisher simply because instead of L2P against already overnerfed underrepresented class ppl rather spend their time crying on forums.
It’s a good story, it’s funny, you’re a funny guy
wow a 1500 arrow is easy to evade? really? i thought in real life they follow the foe to death!
what i meant is that what happens in the real world should not be a reason to keep a class unbalanced in a game about fantasy and magic.
Well that’s why I like the way Ranger pets are slow to respond. It’s more realistic. In the real world my canine, Jack Russell never responds quickly when I call him inside. My cat totally ignores me.
It’s always said that this update is for t1 servers and man how it shows this to be true.
Which is one of the reasons why it was a mistake. This is the death knell for the lower population servers. The only chance they had to survive was the appeal of people transferring there because they grew tired of queues in tier 1.
Been there done that. The only other game that was similar to GW2 was daoc…in terms of 3 way WvW. They also made the mistake of spreading out their WvW action with additional zones.
Eotm will also prove to be a mistake. You fix something by making it better, not adding another zone to water down the WvW population.
I always knew that Ranger traits were a little disorganized but it just now really hit home. I have been sharing my time between Ranger, Elementalist and warrior …along with sub 80 alts. I do a lot of theory crafting when bored at work.
What I realized when picking traits for my other classes was how difficult it was. There are so many good things that I want to take but can only take 3 choices from a particular tree. Was just looking at the Ranger choices and noticed for some trees I am taking traits that I don’t really want or need…because there is nothing better.
Seriously, try some theory crafting with other classes. It is night and day tougher because of the options and how well each tree syncs with what you are trying to do.
you are aware that the triple wurm event is what is called an open world RAID right ?
as such it is designed with meta builds in mind and made as hard as possible to beat using mentioned meta builds, now imagine trying to beat that kind of content with your idea of fun build? from that perspective I say if you wanna run your cookie have fun build don’t go trying to join a RAID !You’re aware that there is nothing they could’ve done to make me leave right? I left because I’m tired of hearing meta talk. Speed runs are one thing, this is open world, and 90% of the time even with full meta, you fail.
Don’t try to join a raid? 100 uplevels could hop in a zone.
People that spam the word “meta” are also a member of a flock of sheep.
I could add some points to that list but… well…
Thieves are annoying to most players. Most players get upset when killed by a thief.
I’m already waiting for the next nerf because some WvWers cried about “permastealth 10k backstab no counterplay etc etc” while some spvpers cried about “permaevade too much mobility too much damage etc etc” and some others cried “thief has no cooldown” (my favourite part)I often read “people wont stop until a thief is a free kill/lootbag.”
Unfortunately, there is some truth behind it. You can’t even argue with 9 out of 10 complaining people, because all they want is the thief being nerfed, because there is something they don’t like.
There are almost no people asking for advice on how to improve their gameplay. Better ask for a nerf, that doesn’t hurt your ego.
Let’s hope the devs do their job well, although I fear that they will be too impressed by the amount of thief QQ the last days, but well…
We’ll see it in 2 months.
……Most players get upset when killed by a thief….
Most players get upset when fighting a Thief, win or lose. It’s annoying to the nth degree having to deal with stealth throughout the fight and having to re-target over and over while making sure you don’t target a mob instead.
One thing you can’t deny, right or wrong, thieves are absolutely hated in WvW. When one pops, people will go out of there way to try and kill him unlike any other class. With that much vitriol towards one class it should surprise me that Anet doesn’t try to fix it. Although it does seem to me some of the decisions Anet does make are pure troll in nature so who knows.
quote=3606024;Azukas.1426:]
We had someone like you on our server.. spouting about how easy Thieves are to fight and that only noobs lose to them.
We then had a Thief causing problems in one of our camps so we sent Mr ‘Thief killer’ to deal with the Thief… The Thief killed him and so the big mouthed moron logged off in embarrassment – not seen him log on in WvW since.
lol I have seen that same scenario a few times.
In regards to burst. Yes, I think you can get burst damage with Ranger …but at an extreme cost. I have been watching a bunch of videos of different classes recently. What I have noticed, and especially with Thieves, is their target selection. You can watch them click on target after target in a zerg situation looking for the perfect victim. You can almost see their eyes light up when they find a Ranger ….and especially a Ranger with the Opening Strike icon.
It’s game over for that Ranger if he is “bursty”. Not only is he glass, but he is standing back from the crowd using his range IE a perfect victim.
If you go burst as a Ranger you have to be alert like a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Playing a pvt/knight build in wvw and watching the thieves die because they though I was an easy meal and smacked into a 2900 armor wall and “Sick em!” gets pretty funny.
Not to sidetrack this excellent thread too much. What you described isn’t a burst/glass build. In a zerg scenario yes, a Thief that meets up with something he can’t kill quickly will just stealth away.

SnD just isnt as effective in WvW VS a skilled DnD ele. Anet as improved the SnD since Day1 but a simple skill like dragon tooth needs a buff especially if F3 on DnD is now being made an evade skill. F3 can hit hard while being an immediate attack and a combo with e4 and soon to be A3 on DnD. But play what you like.
Oh I don’t care of WvW, i’m only playing PvP, It’s my fault i didn’t say that before. (may be they should add 3 versions for one skill, 1 for PvE , 1 for WvW and one for PvP, but I guess it’s hard for them) And i don’t play S/D or D/D I don’t like it very much now i’m playing S/F on a bursty fresh air build, some players don’t know how to handle focus yet.
And I guess in WvW eles are playing bunker D/D builds with toughness, or glassy staff eles no?
That is different. Bored at work so will see if I can theory craft a build with busrt air S/F
Some good stuff. One thing I have done is switch to Runes Perplexity. It procs more often and does more damage than the Tormenting. It also allowed me to improve my HPs/Toughness since I don’t need the crit chance.
I tried the Fires Embrace but don’t like it. Like you said, it doesn’t seem worth it.
Now the tough decision is Dagger or Focus. I like that Dagger has an extra heal and RTL. I like that Focus has another 3 condition purge plus an invuln + 2 interrupts. I can’t decide which to use.
I also tried the conjure Earth Shield. It was ok, but I like the 1200 range burn every 16 seconds too much.
From what I’ve seen, the main problem everybody has with pets is that melee cannot hit worth a kitten . I’ve seen pets actually do reliable damage while Moa Morphed, and it’s because the Moa attacks have a 250 range, compared to the pitiful 130 melee normally has. This is the key to fixing the pet, increase that melee range of the pet to 250. They’ll hit more reliably, and they will be easier to balance for in terms of damage because you’ll see more consistent hits. If this means changing the range of all the similar creatures in the wild (brown bears, jungle stalkers, jaguars, etc) to the same thing, so be it, it’s about time PvE got a little more challenging.
This still doesn’t solve the issue of the pets dieing in two seconds in WvW zergs and keep battles (defense and offense where your pet can’t run up or down the walls, or the birds can’t fly up or down the walls) In these three instances the ranger’s are handicapped by 30% because our pets are useless.
Agree, but pretty much every class is useless on keep defense. You stand on wall without stability and you are gonna get pulled off.
Why would anyone hate Rangers? Especially in WvW. I understand they aren’t wanted in groups but why would a “free kill” be hated?
hehe, That build is pretty awful in terms of surviving, Like I pretty much have to one shot someone otherwise I die soon afterwards cause I don’t have squat for escapes.
But its bloody hilarious every time i do it.
But i probably die more then I kill to be honest.
Right now i’m working on a VenomAura video, despite my best judgement, as I would rather not have a bunch of thieves start running that build
My alt in Daoc was a Shadowblade. I was one of the first to use 2h Sword on my server. It was very funny to climb into an enemy keep and look down at the outside entrance where people gathered before heading out. I could jump down in stealth and 1 shot a caster. Now you are revealed and it was a scramble to climb back up the wall before people reacted..or if they did, not do enough damage until you were over the wall where you could run and lose agro from guards before restealthing.
It was a 50/50 proposition live/die.
A start would be to remove the positional requirement on short bow 1 bleed.
That also is a very good idea. It seems poor that a SB doesn’t really mesh with a condi build. A class like an Elementalist has a bleed on #1 Scepter and #1 Dagger. Scepter has same range kitten so I don’t see any difference (other than Scepter gives 3 bleeds per round)

Completely agree. Increased range might do the trick
You are a bad man Xsorus !
I have been getting into my Ele more lately after playing mostly Ranger and Warrior. I only do WvW. Either solo roam picking off camps/Yaks, helping retake stuff or running with zerg.
I have been having a ton of fun with my condition S/D build. In 1v1 I lose more than I win, likely because of my less than average ability playing the class. So I am looking for some advice to tweak this build.
I load up with 25 perception on my weapon to get more crit chance.
1. Should I stay with Fire 3 or switch to Fire 5? …or drop the 10 points in fire altogether?
I am not sure if the math supports the burn on crit or the longer burn.
2. Should I drop some condition damage and add some power with Knight Amulets over Rapid?
3. Toughness is over 2400 with Earth 2 and in earth. Approx 2200 with Earth 2 and not in earth. Is that too much? I do like the survivability when making FGS runs.
4. Drop dagger for Focus?
Any and all advice or suggestions welcome
Thanks
It’s one think to make a mistake trying out an idea that no one has tried before. The first true WvW game, Daoc, made the same mistake that Anet is doing now. Spreading the WvW out by adding more places for people to go.
The new genre of games are supposed to learn from past mistakes from other games. Apparently Anet hasn’t learned that lesson.
Add to the error is now people on “super servers” never have motivation to leave …and people on lower population servers are actually rewarded by leaving.
It’s fairly obvious by game design there are two different design camps in Anet that compete with each other. How else to explain regular WvW maps with this abomination? I understand some people will prefer this style map but the point is ..
You simply can’t be all things to all people
Another mistake that Anet is making that others have made in the past.
Hummm…I play a ranger and admit that 1v1 vs a thief I lose. But, I know this. It’s WvW and I don’t run up and try to kill em 1v1….I love to stay back and just focus on thieves all day. In a crowd I find em and make sure they never leave. No prob…they sometimes even try to run through the crowd to get at me…much to their stupid demise.
As for changing them so the little fellows are less powerful; that may happen at some point and then all the tykes will get on their trikes and find another niche to exploit.
lol. True on many points. I think more and more people are using that play style. When 2 blobs collide don’t engage enemy blob. Hang back, wait for a roach..I mean thief, to pop and try and gank someone. Now it’s your turn = dead thief
What a horrible place. Not sure who thought up the idea of creating another zone to pull people out of regular WvW. I know the theory is that it is just there as a holding tank but it still pulls a % of people out of regular WvW.
Add to the fact that I have zero interest in how the zone is laid out. Combine that with the PvE and no thanks.
What a waste of manpower creating this clusterkitten ..that time could have been used in a much more productive way.
Is S/F better than S/D for solo roaming/zerg surfing in WvW?
I have been using a S/D condi build and it is very fun …although 1v1 I lose more than I win. I am not a great player though so didn’t blame the build or weapon set.
Working on a few different builds for Staff support in WvW. Both in ZvZ, GvG and havoc.
Came up with this. Would welcome any advice.
Thank you
Just my humble opinion. I prefer to only have 1 burst skill I always use …combine that with some kind of stun or immobilize. A/A + Rifle break both those rules.
I’ve never seen a ranger in spvp or wvw running frost spirit (storm is way better for the rediculous burst damage, especially considering spirit is a condi build), and I don’t think anyone complains about rangers being OP in PvE. What are you saying with this thread?
If that’s changed then the alternative is 10% extra damage on ONE attack every 10 seconds… yeah, nah.
What burst damage? I have tested it a few times recently and it seems a little underwhelming (wvw) …and the proc is a joke.
I have to admit I am missing the spirit bandwagon. The only one i have ever found useful was Stone Spirit
Wait, I’m confused – you want to duo with mesmer or necro?
confused also
I have plenty of other videos with 1v2 fights with ranger. Here’s one of me escaping a large group of people. Rangers, in the hands of skilled players, do just fine.
Awesome man. That is only the second person I have seen able to do that with sword. I have tried numerous times to pull it off but it never ends up any faster than straight ahead running for me.
I can’t seem to not lose time when I try and turn around for the 1st backward jump …and don’t know where to begin to practice it properly. Would be a big boost to my potential builds because currently I need GS always for my mobility.
Isn’t it spectacular what happens when a bandwagon collapses?
Sad but true
5+ ppl trying to catch a single thief for over 5 min or more? Welcome to GW2, a MMORPG game with a facebook’s games dev team.

You boys need to stop worrying. With the addition of new rune sets, 2 sigil slots and how ferocity will work, you will barely notice that 10%.
Also note, it’s not just us, thieves and other classes that rely on full glass will be hit harder, and, that means they won’t be as much of a threat to you.
So chill, still going to be able to steamroll other players.
Just because this happens to be a discussion on the warrior forum doesn’t mean we interpret this as a warrior nerf; in fact, it’s probably been more efficient to run a condition roaming build for a while now — this is likely a buff for the better warriors out there.
Doesn’t mean it’s not a totally unwarranted band aid that demonstrates that ArenaNet doesn’t understand the state of the game.
People are literally crying that it’s a direct nerf, and they act like it’s just to us, when it’s across the board. And you understand the state of the game so much that you give in and play condi?
Condi builds are a joke, and I can post at least 10 clips of me destroying condi players with pure power non zerker based just from today’s roaming experience which is also based around no zerker stance, and no Melandru, but Hoelbrak and bulls charge.
Crit dmg will be hit now, more changes will be made, and trust me, condi has had it’s day in the Sun, but it’s for bad players, lazy players, and it will get the change it needs in the future.
So please, give in, play condi, and I’ll be along shortly to collect your bags.
I resemble that remark
Everything else is true though. These potential changes aren’t in a vacuum. They apply to everyone. The sky is falling mentality is laughable….although it is a little amusing.
I run a Axe/Warhorn Sword/Torch condi crit hybrid with celestial gear to great effect.
It has loads of conditions, almost 100% fury and swiftness up time in combat if your swapping correctly (as soon as you’re off cooldown). With the 60-70% crit chance and 90% crit damage you’ll be seeing mostly 800-900 damage auto attack. Each crit grants your pet might and plants a bleed.
Try Torch 5(fire field), swap, Wh-5 (blast), wh-4 (17 hits), axe 2 (5 hits), Sic Em, Axe 3(chill). For nice pet burst damage. Also try with RaO.
I bet that build does very nice damage. Lack of speed as a WvW roamer always concerns me though.
You know, I used to run it with SoH instead of Sic ‘Em, but I found that it doesn’t actually make a difference. The thing about running in WvW is that you’re often in combat, so the sword 2, evades and regen are what really keep you alive. Because of all of the swiftness and gap closers out there, SoH’s 25% doesn’t always save you. You can get away from any one person without it, and any group that can catch you would have caught you anyway. Give it a try.
That said, if you want to maximize mobility you can always run sword and great sword.
I agree if the horde wants to catch you, they will. I think it comes down to a couple of things.
1. If you notice the zerg and use GS to swoop away, most times they will abandon the chase. They know they can eventually catch you but it will take some time. usually not worth it for them. Just like the two guy out in the forest and a bear gets after them. You don’t have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the guy your with.
2. Rangers get a little slack at times. If it was a thief, the zerg will chase until they catch him or the thief uses his invisibility and gets away.
The information is interesting. Hate that I can’t find it anywhere so I can read it.
Hi,
Funny you want to post a Hammer build, as I am using Hammer+Sword/Shield in WvW now. Lot of fun.
I’ve never played it, but the more I think about it, the more attractive I find this weapons combination. I wonder if we’d go the same way about it, though:
That does look pretty good. I like the way the way the 2 weapon sets complement each other. anyone else use this?
Even though you say the title is a joke, I support it. Just get rid of them already. No one likes them, not even themselves really, they’re full of self loathing.
Here’s a suggestion. In the upcoming expansion just get rid of them. And add a new profession to replace them. After the expansion, when a thief logs in they are instantly transmorgafied to the new profession. Problem solved.
lol brilliant
The walls are not fine. Nobody said anything about not being able to attack the enemy. Its been mentioned since launch. It is easier for the attackers to hit up to the top of the wall than it is for the defenders in a defensive position to hit aiming down from their defensive position.
Assbackwards. But who knows, it might be worse the other way. Could make it too hard to take a structure. But its still frustrating.
But its not going to change so just learn to live with it. Hate the game not the gamer.
Add to the fact that you will get pulled off the wall down into the zerg and roflstomped. Maybe the defenders should be able to do that also. Pull someone up to their zerg.
Because of everything listed it seems counter productive when defending to wait until the attackers break IN before fighting back.
Racking up a bunch of 1v1 wins is never boring
XP + Loot = a win. Anything else is psychobabble.
Attackers already have the advantage, which goes against all logic and common sense. No need to make it even worse.
If a thief runs away from a duel, you won.
A worn out cliche that is laughably used by Thieves to prove they are balanced.
So would I.
I have played many of these type of games. They all try and improve things as they go forward. When something is really broken, they usually try and put the repair on the front burner. I have never seen a developer ignore something so outlandish, broken and flawed as this.
Sorry, but have you seen condi/bunker meta insanity going on in wvw and pvp? AND THIEF, OUT OF ALL THE THINGS, IS THE PROBLEM? …………
Correct. It’s all about priorities. There will always be something to adjust or tweak. the big ones come first.
